WEEKEND MAX MARA

Editor’s Letter The sun is shining brighter, and summer shows signs that it is closer than we would like it to be. We love our Middle Eastern lifestyle and loads of sunny days, but the scorching heat in the months ahead is not so pleasant, and many people tend to go away on holidays during this period. We know that with Covid-19 still very present in our lives, travelling might be postponed (again!) or at least very well planned. To help you with this task, our issue this month is dedicated to this subject. Our fashion pages bring different packing styles inspired by your destination (pg10), while our cover story showcases the most exclusive stays around the globe. You can pick one as your next landing spot or embark on a visual trip to these beautiful retreats with us (pg 66). We also care about your beauty routine on the go, and we bring some tips on how to take care of your complexion while exploring the world (pg58). Are you a jewellery enthusiast? If so, delve into our astonishing spread to find the latest jewels and watches available in the market (pg24). In the beauty section, you find a new range of fashionable makeup (pg52), a review done by our team on a natural skin and haircare brand (pg56), and one of our contributors had her locks transformed at this kingdom of beauty (pg62). We were lucky enough to feast at two dining locations before Covid-19 restrictions were placed; you can book your table to embrace this experience as soon as they re-open (pg72). To complete our journey, we drove the new BMW520i Sedan, and we can tell that your motoring itch will tickle (pg78). We saved a seat for you – join us!

T

rends are transient; they come and go. However, style stays even when the seasons change. And some brands understand that certain designs are created to be timeless. The iconic brand Montblanc has conceived the Montblanc Sartorial Collection, an assemblage of pieces that are everlasting and embrace this concept. The collection is a hybrid between timeless classic design and bold contemporary style—an ever-evolving series with leather pieces that strike a balance between heritage and modernity. The pieces in the Montblanc Sartorial range accompany business nomads, city travellers and innovative entrepreneurs from their busy days to sophisticated nights and from business encounters to relaxing escapes. They are crafted in black, deep blue and bold graphite with the M-shaped design (abstractly appearing in a front pocket) as a constant throughout the collection. Montblanc Sartorial features large, medium and small document cases and backpacks; vertical and horizontal totes; messenger bag, envelope or mini envelope; portfolio, notepad holder, notebook holder, clutch and small pouch; wallets, pen sleeve, business card holders, passport holder and key fobs. PRECIOUS DETAILS

A piece of jewellery lets you leave a sparkle wherever you go. It speaks the universal language of beauty and history. We selected some striking gems and watches to praise and proclaim our love for beautiful blings.

“I have enough jewellery” – said no one ever! dornments have been part of the life of humankind since prehistoric times and were used as a protection from the dangers of life or as a mark of status. Back then, jewellery pieces were made out of shells, stones and bones. Today, the world of precious gems and metals has grown exponentially, and its meaning goes beyond representing a culture; it adds that fantastic shimmer to our everyday lives. Jewellery is all about design, colour and shine. Nowadays, technology and highly skilled craftsmanship are used to take it even further into intricate pieces. Often purchased to be gifted on significant occasions or to elevate the status of a clothing piece, jewels play a crucial role in our lives. New creations and vintage items are some of the most desirable goods by women and men in every corner of the planet. And what is the other article that goes hand in hand with jewellery? Watches! Together they reach inestimable value, and every piece of jewellery or timepiece tells a history. The forthcoming Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition (DJWE) puts together the most prestigious names in the market under the same roof to celebrate these sophisticated accessories. A revelry of eye-catching pieces and luxurious gems. The event has been part of the Qatari calendar for the past 17 years and is an encounter of jewellery aficionados, global brands, and aspiring designers. In 2020 the DJWE had 129 exhibitors from 14 countries and received visitors from 175 countries.

RAVISHING DIAMONDS Luxury and sparkle are words associated with Tiffany & Co. and, because of its brilliant nature, the brand’s designs are easily spotted at red carpet events. The desirable blue-box brand Tiffany & Co. was founded in New York City in 1837 by Charles Lewis Tiffany. Since then, it has become a global luxury jeweller that exudes elegance, innovative design, fine craftsmanship and creative excellence. The small business grew, and Tiffany now has more than 300 retail stores worldwide and more than 13,000 employees. Nearly 5,000 skilled artisans cut Tiffany’s diamonds and craft its jewellery in the company’s own workshops, highly prizing superlative quality. Tiffany & Co. is also committed to conducting its business responsibly, sustaining the natural environment, prioritising diversity and inclusion and impacting the communities where it operates in a positive way. Tiffany & Co needs no introduction; however, its history and commitment explain the appetite of celebrities and Hollywood actors for association with the brand. And the jewellery pieces are regularly spotted on red carpets worldwide or in virtual awards appearances. One of the latest celebrities to wear Tiffany & Co.’s diamonds was Anya Taylor-Joy, The Queen’s Gambit star. Anya appeared in a radiant Tiffany & Co. necklace, featuring more than 70 mixed-cut Tiffany diamonds, totalling over 26 carats. The look was complemented by Tiffany diamond earrings and a selection of rings, including a seven-carat, emerald-cut diamond. Her dazzling appearance happened at the Screen Actors Guild Awards 2021. LESS IS MORE A fragment of light encapsulated on the wrist is the core concept in this new masterpiece watch from Hublot. Embracing the concept that a sleek design and minimal add-ons can deliver the ideal watch, the Big Bang Integral Tourbillon Full Saphire from Hublot is born. The wristwatch has a new integral bracelet and case custom-made from sapphire and the design shows off the technical proficiency and expertise that Hublot has acquired in working with this gemstone. The Big Bang Integral Tourbillon Full Sapphire is the fruit of a long tradition, rooted in 2016 with the Big Bang Unico Sapphire, the first sapphire watch created by Hublot. The brand proves its ability to match very tough materials, pushing its boundaries even further with this piece with an integrated case and bracelet made with sapphire. “Producing both from this material and integrating them is the pinnacle of the in-depth work undertaken by all of Hublot’s teams. We are proud to be the ones writing the first lines in this new chapter in the history of materials,” highlights Ricardo Guadalupe, Hublot CEO. The case of this new Big Bang Integral Tourbillon has been reconstructed in its entirety to house the Automatic Tourbillon movement. With its case and bracelet made entirely from sapphire, all secrets are revealed, and every aspect is visible. The reduction of inserts and attachments to their simplest expression allows light through every component. “For such an exceptional creation, we opted for the new Automatic Tourbillon calibre with its sapphire bridges; the transparency creates a stunning spectacle,” says Ricardo. @hublot

TIMELESS ELEGANCE Timepieces are the ultimate detail to compose classy style. Patek Philippe introduces three new models to help you achieve a refined look. Watches are timekeepers but also an indispensable accessory for every sophisticated woman out there. Thinking about modern active women, Patek Philippe unveils three new Twenty~4 models designed to best suit their needs. Three new expressions of the Patek Philippe style, bringing beauty to every aspect of daily life. To keep up with new trends and desires, the manufacturer is continuing to renew its Twenty~4 collection. The manchette, or cuff-style, models with quartz movements now include a new version in rose gold with a chocolate-brown sunburst dial. While the Twenty~4 Automatic, in a round case, is offering two new models, one in steel adorned with an olive-green sunburst dial and the other with a rose-gold sunburst. When Patek Philippe launched its first exclusively feminine collection in 1999, it had the busy lives of refined and independent women in mind. And so was born a watch with an assertive personality, an accessory for every occasion. It complements your office wear, laid-back home style and even an elegant evening outfit. The Twenty~4 quartz manchette model, featuring a cambered rectangular case and a dial adorned with applied Roman numerals, appeared in a wealth of different versions. In 2018, attuned to the needs of 21st-century women and their increasing interest in mechanical movements, Patek Philippe launched the Twenty~4 Automatic. While this model stands out by its round case and its dial’s Arabic numerals, it retains the same exclusive bracelet and the same spirit of a modern classic. In 2020, the manufacturer gave a new face to its manchette model by endowing it too with applied Arabic numerals. The creative impulse continues today with these three new Twenty~4 models so that women now have the choice of 12 different wristwatches to complement their looks. @patekphilippe

LIVELY LUXURY Messika Paris by Kate Moss brings buoyant designs created with luxurious gems. A collection that epitomises the relationship between fashion and fine jewellery. What happens when a fashion icon with instantly recognisable style partners with a contemporary jewellery brand? Messika Paris by Kate Moss. A desirable and stylish collection with all the sophistication and detail behind high-end jewels. The British supermodel and the diamond jewellery designer Valérie Messika have collaborated to create a unique electric and defiant line. The creations pay homage to a woman who has transcended generations and styles, and one word defines it – freedom! The two minds have worked with spontaneity and sincerity, and more than 100 pieces of jewellery were imagined. Valérie’s own rules guide her designs, but most of all, her instincts. She creates jewellery that is light, assured and expressive. “I want to give a touch of sparkle and self-confidence to the woman that is wearing my pieces,” she says. Kate has long stamped her libertarian imprint on the world, and her way of interpreting fashion has always inspired the maison’s designer. Together the duo create a perfect balance between trends and luxury. The co-designed jewellery embodies both Messika’s values and Kate’s style. The movement of the stones, the fluidity of the lines, the jeweller’s suppleness, and the boldness of the wearer. Together, they have found a common language within the mixture of gold types, various diamond cuts and even the way the precious materials are used. The collection is lively, eclectic and brightly coloured. Elements such as shades, oversized designs, and Art Deco can be spotted in the creations. @messikajewelry

POETIC JEWELS Striking and sculptural motifs define this collection, with elements that are recognised across all cultures and civilisations. Welcome to Graff’s Tribal collection. Since the beginning of time, humankind has looked to the stars and celestial bodies to guide everyday life. These ancestral instincts are Graff ’s inspiration for its Tribal collection, which captures the wonders of the world through solid and stylised motifs that carry eternal meaning. The new collection was launched on March 20 to align with the Spring Equinox, which ushers in new life and light. The assemblage represents the endless beauty of nature, a contemporary reimagination of universally understood symbols. The artistic process of interpreting these ageless forms illustrates Graff ’s passion for exceptional diamonds and gems. The Tribal Symbols The Graff Gateway These designs are a vision of timelessness, linking the past and the future, Earth and stars. Sculptural abstract ovals are defined by expressive curves resonating with symbolism. New Dawn This design represents an explosive sunburst symbolising life, energy and power. This pattern harnesses the beauty of a sunrise, breaking over the horizon, each jewel blazes with the powerful fire of the finest diamonds. Night Moon A composition representing a half-moon formed of round and pavé diamond clusters, the design is a symbol of clarity and reflection. It is a modern reimagination of an iconic motif that shines bright in the Tribal collection and enchants with its talisman-like beauty. @graff

THE PERFECT RATIO The quintessential watch, Happy Sport by Chopard is a daring and free-spirited creation that has been re-invented in an ideal size. A new desirable watch from Chopard is shining its light in the luxury market. The brand’s iconic Happy Sport is being introduced in an optimally comfortable 33mm-diameter case inspired by the ‘golden ratio’ principles of aesthetic harmony. And the star of its campaign is another icon, Julia Roberts. The Hollywood actress is associated with her unforgettable smile, which seems to make everything possible, transmitting pure joy. For Caroline Scheufele, the creator of the Happy Sport in 1993 and Chopard’s Co-President and Artistic Director, Julia Roberts is the ultimate Happy Sport woman, embodying the maison’s innate joie de vivre. Chopard and Julia Roberts were destined to cross paths. They both have a striking magnetism, express freedom and exude inextinguishable happiness. Happy Sport - 33mm Feminine and playful, technical and precious, timeless and modern: through the diversity of its qualities, the icon of the Maison Chopard is a quintessential watchmaking success story. Pursuing its commitment to a constant quest for harmony, Chopard endows its successful creation with unique stature through a daintier size. Designed to be worn by women in all their day-to-day activities, the Happy Sport is a watch that must, above all, feel as pleasant to wear as a second skin, in every situation. By using the golden ratio, directly related to the diameter of the Chopard 09.01-C movement with automatic winding powering its ladies’ watch collections, the case of the Happy Sport has been redesigned with a 33mm diameter that is particularly well suited to the female wrist. Since antiquity, this mathematical balance has been found in science, art and architecture, reproducing the harmony prevalent in nature.

34

www.ohlalamag.net

Julia Roberts and Chopard The actress stars the campaign and a short film created by a team of talented contemporary artists to showcase Caroline Scheufele’s visions. Here’s what Julia Roberts has to say about this partnership: How does your Happy Sport watch make you feel? There is something about having a watch and, every time you look at it, seeing all these sparkling diamonds whirling around, it’s pretty awesome and truly good stuff. How important to you is responsible luxury? I would say that the idea of responsible luxury is something that not enough brands pay attention to. The thing with a maison like Chopard is that it has really pioneered the concept of having a conscience, leading the charge and setting an example for other brands to follow. What is so special about Chopard? Chopard just represents this timeless idea of elegance and sparkle and being ladylike. You kind of think: “When I grow up, I want to be having a great time and wearing watches and earrings by Chopard…” and now look at me, I’m all grown up! NATURE NOVELTIES The Maison Boucheron brings new versions of two iconic designs, the Plume De Paon and Fuzzy, the Leopard Cat. Eye-catching jewellery pieces that will add singularity and confidence to your looks. The elements found in nature are an inspiration to the jewellery world. More than 140 years ago, Frédéric Boucheron, the founder of Maison Boucheron, and his foreman were playing with a peacock feather and had the idea to create a necklace to resemble it. They wanted to develop a piece that would be free, aerial and supple, mimicking the delicate shape of the feather. The motif is chiselled in supple strands and comes to life through the woman’s movements when wearing it. The feather continues to inspire the brand. This time, it trembles in white gold and diamonds while daring new aesthetics are included for a contemporary approach. Inspired by another animal, Fuzzy is a collection that portrays a dreamy feline. This season, the new items come in a pendant and an ear stud shape, showcasing rose-gold fur and emerald green eyes. Whether you choose a peacock feather or a leopardcat design, they’ll add a signature to your style. They represent delight and strength, softness and power to reveal your sense of uniqueness. @boucheron

DESIGNER Spotlight

C

artier was founded on audacity, a courageous creativity that has pushed the boundaries of beauty, form and function in jewellery, watchmaking and perfumery since 1847. Its timeless pieces, from the Pilot Watch to the Love Bracelet, have become icons of exceptional craftsmanship and instantly recognisable design. Such heritage sets a high benchmark for a young collection. But Clash de Cartier defies all expectations of what Cartier jewellery should look like, while remaining absolutely true to the spirit and values of the maison. Here, femininity and sophistication meet a hunger for adventure and freedom from convention in a range of rings, earrings, bracelets and necklaces cast in warm rose and cool white gold. Each piece is almost architectural in its enjoyment of form, playing with silhouette and volume, their proportions in perfect balance. The combinations of polished studs, clous carrés and beads are irresistibly tactile, begging to be touched. Though their configurations here are thoroughly modern, the forms honour Cartier’s historic embrace of geometry in their pioneering Art Deco creations of the 1930s. From the outside, this collection’s strength lies in the simplicity of its artistry: strong shapes, clean lines, perfect finish. But beneath the polished surface lies a complex feat of engineering. Cartier’s jewellers have developed an ingenious system of articulation, in which each element is precisely calibrated and magnetised so the studs are secure yet supple, moving against each other fluidly, with softly scalloped inner edges for total comfort. Against the skin, light flickers over the rippling shapes to create the illusion of softness in sculpted metal, while projecting strength in both style and substance. Worn here by British-Brazilian beauty Kaya Scodelario, as comfortable in fierce leather as in fine silk, the Clash de Cartier collection is the embodiment of elegance with edge, simultaneously refined and rebellious.

Clash de Cartier Supple

The collection has now expanded, leaning into both sides of Clash de Cartier’s deliciously contradictory character. In the Supple range, the same fierce forms meet more delicate dimensions, gracefully woven together for ultimate fluidity of movement.

Clash de Cartier XL

These pieces intensify the clash of attitudes, as the maison’s mastery of proportion pushes into punk. Turn up the volume on Cartier’s signature style for a new generation with double the force.

to promote well-being, alleviating stress, calming, and boosting selfconfidence. Magnolia recomposed with hedione (an aroma compound that smells similar to jasmine) heightens the olfactory narrative acting as a quasi-pheromone, activating the brain’s pleasure receptors. Blackcurrant is added to revitalise and liberate the fragrance’s energy, while white musk enhances the scent for an intense final touch. The result is an addictive perfume that speaks to the brain’s deepest part, creating an olfactory circuit that crosses the emotional terrain for a positive outcome. The main notes are bergamot, mandarin, white magnolia, cassis, white sandalwood, all-natural white musk and all-natural rose musk.

T

This Ramadan, Izil, a skin and haircare brand from the Middle East, created an advent calendar featuring a range of products, and the OHLALA team had the pleasure of testing them out!

he Middle Eastern skin and haircare brand Izil offers various products made with natural ingredients found in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region. Using 100-per-cent natural ingredients is their motto. Skincare and haircare are a beauty priority in most girls’ lives and, during the Holy Month, extra care should be devoted to the biggest organ in our bodies –– our skin. Thinking about women’s and men’s needs, Izil created a 30-day Ramadan advent calendar with some of their products in mini sizes to be tested out. We separated them amongst our team according to each one’s skin and hair type; here’s what each one had to say. Omnia Elamir Graphic Designer One of the products that I tried was the handmade soap from Morocco, and it was foamy, which left my hands soft but not oily to the touch and gave the skin a tighter feel. The Rosy Glow Toner removed the dirt from my skin without drying it out. It had a lovely scent of rose water, and I felt that it hydrated my skin pretty well. The White Clay Powder was wonderful to 56

exfoliate without being harsh. Having oily skin, this product improved my complexion, my foundation glided on flawlessly, and my makeup looked better. In the hair care area, I tried the Argan Nourishing Shampoo. It cleaned the hair without stripping it of moisture, left a pleasant natural smell and my scalp felt fresh and my hair less frizzy, which made styling easier. The Argan Nourishing Conditioner had a creamy consistency and helped detangle my curls, keeping a soft touch throughout the day. I only wished that there was a bit more of these products for a better experience. Sara Waddah Digital Editor The Argan Nourishing Conditioner was perfect for helping nourish and bring my curls back to life after wash day. I applied it to the mid-lengths of my hair and then rinsed it out; the conditioner was able to moisturise my locks and give them a shiny appearance. After being out in the sun all day, Izil’s Rose Micellar Cleansing Water was able to cool my face down with its anti-inflammatory properties. As well as making me feel refreshed after exposing my face to the sun’s rays, the product also removed any residue of dirt that was building up.

BEAUTY Spotlight With a strong woody fragrance, the Royal Oud Argan Oil was the best pick for moisturising my body after taking a long bath. Rich in all the essential nutrients that helped nurse my skin back to smoothness, the product was effective and smelled great. One of my favourites was the 100-per-cent Pure Black Seed Oil. By using a tiny amount with a regular moisturiser, the oil helped tackle parts of my skin that were uncomfortable due to laser procedures. As well as getting rid of the redness, it calmed and soothed the area almost instantly. Liz O’Reilly Editorial Director The Orange Blossom Ultra-Hydrating Dry Oil gets a definite thumbs up. I have two inherited frizzy patches of hair, so I used this instead of my regular Argan oil. It was equally effective with the bonus of smelling great. In fact, I was so impressed with the scent that I also slathered it onto the dehydrated skin on my arms – I stayed soft and fragrant all day long. I also loved the Moroccan Soap – Eucalyptus. I’m not a fan of hammams as I’m not keen on being scrubbed to within an inch of my life. However, this gave that black-soap experience in my own shower and left my skin feeling fabulous. I also tried a skin scrub, which was quite gentle but effective, and the Re-Mineralising Body Mask – a bit of a strange sensation, but it smelled good and left the skin on my elbows feeling rejuvenated. The Regenerating Serum was quickly absorbed and would probably be fine for someone with ‘normal’ skin. However, my complexion is super-dry and quite delicate, and this just didn’t feel rich enough for an, admittedly, pretty tough job. Lastly, the Pure Orange Blossom Water Toner. I wanted to like this; I really did, because it smells good. But, unfortunately, I found it very drying – not surprising really, as my regular routine does not include toner for exactly this reason. Fernanda Langhammer Editor I am a big fan of skincare, and I follow my beauty routine religiously, so I was over the moon to try Izil’s products. I started by adding the Ghassoul Clay Powder, replacing my once-a-week mask moment. You are supposed to mix a bit of the powder with water and apply it to your clean skin. The drying feeling was a bit strange, but the result was excellent. The texture afterwards was soft and pleasant. I do not scrub my face too often, maybe once every 15 days, and I used the Illuminating Almond Scrub this time around. The texture of the scrub is fantastic; it has little pieces of almond and smells great. Result wise, it did its job without leaving my skin dry, which is very important to me. I also tried two 100-per-cent oils, Argan (that I used in my hair and cuticles and loved it!) and Prickly Pear Seed (that I applied under my eyes to hydrate and help with dark circles, the skin in the area does appear moistened, I will keep using it). The Pure Damask Rose Water Toner had a great smell, but I felt that it left my complexion a bit dry, and I saw myself applying a more significant amount of moisturiser. And last but not least, I loved the Antibacterial Hand Sanitiser, which is very practical these days and comes in a perfect size to fit even the littlest pocket.

On the Go

As they say, travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer. However, your skin might pay a high price. Check out our tips to maintain a flawless complexion while exploring the world.

C

reating a beauty routine and sticking to it is an important step to improve the health of your skin. The process of product application follows this basic sequence: cleanser, toner, serum, moisturiser and sunscreen, if in the morning. There are other specific products that are applied in between, such as scrubs, eye-cream and oils, but this is a basic and daily routine. If you dedicate time to follow these simple steps am and pm, you will get great results in the long run. However, how do you keep up with this kind of routine while travelling? Small packaging is the first solution. Most brands offer their products in smaller containers, but you can also buy or save small sealed pots. Do take your own beauty bag with essentials and avoid applying hotel amenities, they might not be right for your skin and also may not be of the best quality.

58

While on the go there are other aspects to consider: In the Aeroplane If you are flying to a close destination, the air in the plane might not affect you too much, but if you are travelling, for example, to Brazil or Australia from the Middle East you will need some extra care. The plane cabin has very low humidity, which can dehydrate your skin. Not only will dry skin become drier, but oily skin can become even oilier. When skin loses its water, it tends to produce more oil to compensate for the loss. The way to help your complexion is to apply a mist from time to time and moisturise. A lip balm is also an essential item – trust us! At the Destination With overnight flights, train journeys, and road trips, you will not have the time to wash your face properly. And if you don’t clean your skin correctly the dead cells accumulate on its surface leading to uneven skin tone and breakouts. The best way to fight the damage is to try your best to go back to your skincare routine. Also, check the weather of the place you are travelling to. If it is cold, the air will be lacking humidity, and your skin will dry out quickly. If it is a warm place, it will be humid, and your skin will release sebum and be prone to clogged pores. Another fact that we rarely take in consideration is that you

will also be exposed to different environmental conditions (including different pollution levels), and will probably eat different types of food, maybe a bit more of junk meals and snacks? So be attentive to skin changes and adapt your skincare accordingly.

Here are some quick tips:

-TAKE FACIAL WIPES WITH YOU FOR A QUICK CLEANSING SITUATION. -SPRAY A FACIAL MIST EVERY TIME YOUR SKIN FEELS DRY. -WEAR SUNSCREEN, EVEN IN THE PLANE. YOU WILL BE CLOSER TO THE SUN’S RAYS AND THE WINDOWS DON’T ENTIRELY FILTER THEM. - AVOID WEARING FOUNDATION AND HEAVY MAKEUP, OPT FOR MASCARA AND LIP GLOSS ONLY. -AVOID TOUCHING YOUR FACE TO MINIMISE BREAKOUTS. -DON’T COMPROMISE YOUR BEAUTY SLEEP, EVEN THOUGH YOU WANT TO DO IT ALL, LEAVE SPACE FOR SOME REST TIME. OTHERWISE, YOU WILL NEED A HOLIDAY FROM YOUR HOLIDAYS!

S

leep deprivation is one of the biggest causes of dark circles under the eyes; however, sun exposure, heredity and allergies can also cause this problem to happen. Another matter is the natural ageing process. When you age, you tend to lose fat and collagen, and your skin often thins, which can make the reddish-blue blood vessels under your eyes more prominent. During Ramadan, your sleeping routine is affected, and dark circles result from not having proper rest. A bad night’s sleep can make your skin look dull and pale, allowing the tissues and blood vessels beneath to show through, imagine 30 days of not sleeping the number of hours you actually need? We come to the rescue with a homemade recipe to banish your dark circles. The main ingredients are cucumbers and mint. While cucumbers are rich in vitamin K, known for reducing discolouration and strengthening blood capillaries, mint soothes the area with its antioxidant properties. The combination of these two ingredients is your weapon to fight this issue.

OHLALA’s Cucumber and Mint Eye-Cream What you’ll need:

1 cucumber 1/2 cup of mint leaves 1 tbsp of aloe vera 3 tbsp of filtered water 3 drops of almond oil

How to make and apply it:

1. Blend the cucumber and mint thoroughly. 2. Add the other ingredients and stir well. 3. Form a paste and apply it under your eyes. 4. Leave it for 10 minutes. 5. Wash it off with lukewarm water and continue with your facial care routine.

Queen of Hearts

Living in Doha means living amongst sun, sand, and salty air when it comes to maintaining one’s beauty regimen. OHLALA’s Anzish Mirza finds the solution at the city’s kingdom of beauty — enter Aldo Coppola Doha. 62

A

s the sun brings its warmth to the summer months, we all come out to get some vitamin D as we play in the sea and sand. But let’s face it, strong UV radiation and the salty air of Doha is no friend to skin or hair, so I am pleased to find a luxurious remedy as I venture out to Aldo Coppola Doha at Al Hazm Mall. Nestled in the corner of this extravagant and leisurely structure on the first floor, this international beauty brand destination has the solutions to all your hair, skin, and nail problems. I am greeted by a clean-cut and glistening white interior, bolstered with red statement pieces. The luxury atelier features a very modern take on comfort, boldness, uniqueness, and innovation. Apart from the common areas, there are VIP suits for those clients preferring privacy. These are furnished with cocooning beds, invented by Aldo Coppola in 2010, for clients wishing to enjoy a full body massage whilst receiving a hair treatment to complete the beauty journey. Before beginning my hair treatment, we start with a quick diagnosis of the scalp and hair before a personalised option is recommended by the stylist,

who suggests a hydrating treatment to bring life into my strands that have just withered away.

Hello Hydration

There’s nothing more comforting than having someone wash your hair as they massage in shampoo and conditioner to rinse away dirt, product buildup, and stress. The chair at the washing station reclines to an almost horizontal position as it massages me from neck to toe, allowing me to lie flat and relaxed as my tresses comfortably cascade into the basin. As the technician cleans and caresses my locks, I stare up to the ceiling entranced by the beautiful mosaic patterns and enjoy the sounds of a retro playlist. After cleansing, my hair is lathered in a rich cream to infuse hydrating elements. My stylist tells me that it’s always preferred to treat damp hair, this way all the moisture from the water is locked in. Time flies by as I acknowledge the placement of the hot towel to steam the hair and absorb the hydration elements from my treatment. Each step of this process has my parched tresses, though quite damp, instantly feeling healthier and softer as they fall off my shoulders.

Snip Snap

One of the best things you can do for dry and damaged hair is to cut it all off. And if you’ve had long hair for most of your adult life, then you know how daunting such a step can be. But it needed to be done, in my unfortunate case, and there’s no one I’d rather trust with such a transformation. In a short conversation with the stylist, I request layers throughout, while cutting off quite a few inches of my locks. Her scissors work quickly, sectioning hair and layering, making it look as easy as breathing. Then, with some blasts from the hairdryer and quick strokes of a round brush, I’m ready to hit the streets. My hair feels bouncier, and each layer is perfectly defined giving me the volume I needed.

Painting Art

To complete this pampering session, I go towards a nail care station in a separate section at the back of the salon. This room is bright and airy with nail tables on one side and statement red manicure and pedicure stations on the other — with social distancing stickers on every other station. The nail technicians carefully sculpt, clean, and paint to achieve picture-perfect nails, which have certainly upped my hand movements during conversations. However, one thing that I would like to highlight is the use of clean and sanitised equipment, something I look for in every salon, keeping me safe and stylish. Each tool comes out of a sealed pack — something of the utmost importance in these times. This luxury salon stands for true innovation in the world of hair and beauty, giving me the perfect experience and even better results. Aldo Coppola Doha is known for consistent service, professional staff, and pleasant atmosphere. It’s the perfect escape for a little rejuvenation or complete makeover.

was first looking forward to visiting Sora more than a year ago, but something got in the way. Something called a pandemic! This restaurant opened in December 2019 and within a few months had to close its doors as the country was told to stay home. Well, they say the best things in life are worth waiting for and this surely ranks as one of the best finds I’ve come across in Qatar’s competitive culinary scene. Situated on the 21st floor, with a picture postcard view of West Bay, as seen across the water from Msheireb, the Park Hyatt’s premier restaurant sits on a prime piece of real estate. Subject to restrictions, diners can choose from tables on the terrace or indoors by floor-to-ceiling windows through which the views can be enjoyed anywhere. We were there for lunch and what a treat it was. Executive Chef Steffen Schnetzke and Chef de Cuisine Joon Su Park talked us through how the team tinkered with ideas, adjusting the menu slightly, even after launching, to get things right. This is modern Japanese food with twists and some imagination. The menu stands out for being distinctive and original. We started with a sophisticated sushi selection, including the Imperial tuna maki rolls with caviar, then tried the Akira maki which is shrimp tempura, avocado, mayo and truffle. The half dozen maki rolls are served on a grill brought to the table with smoke billowing from beneath. Instagrammers will love this but, like most dishes here, it’s not just aesthetically impressive but delicately balanced in flavour too. There was one appetiser the restaurant recommended that I would never have ordered otherwise. I wasn’t sure it would be exciting, but they were right and I was wrong. The Mochi Chicken is such a clever dish. Served in a white terracotta bowl, the pieces of chicken are doused in a squid coating to give an almost calamari-like taste with a delicate dollop of fresh tomato sauce on top. I’m a bit of a salad snob and mostly gloss over them in restaurants. But, you must try the lobster salad here. It is so generous and wholesome. The lobster was served as big, hot spheres, so we’d bite into them and get an explosion of taste. Main courses are cooked in the charcoal robata. The beef tenderloin was sensational. Prepared to chef ’s recommendation (rare, of course!), it was smoked and had just the tiniest amount of jus beneath, not even needing the accompanying sauce as the cooking was so good. The black cod made me smile too because it was beautifully cooked, served with several pieces of asparagus and I did not feel shortchanged by the portions. Desserts were video-worthy for social stories! The raspberry pavlova was smashed on the plate before us for some great theatre, but it wasn’t all for show as it tasted sublime and fresh. My favourites were the chocolate tacos with fruity insides that made for the most refreshing bite to end the night. No, not traditionally Japanese from beginning to end but more Japanese-inspired and then taken on a creative riff that made for a thoroughly pleasurable dining experience showing off the chef ’s incredible ingenuity and imagination. South of The Border, Down Mexico Way

In one of his last restaurant outings before the recent restrictions, Craig Ferriman had the pleasure of an evening at Maya, located at Kempinski Residences & Suites Doha, being cooked for by Chef Sergio Galaz.

M

aya is possibly the best Mexican restaurant that you’ll find in a five-star hotel. That’s because it isn’t TexMex, rather it’s the truly authentic and traditional food of Mexico cooked with five-star flare but honest to its culinary roots. We started with Chef Sergio’s homemade guacamole; it was almost worth leaving my house for that alone! The difference between real guacamole made right and with fresh ingredients as opposed to out of a jar, couldn’t be more stark. The tortillas with guac were a great way to start and whet the appetite. The Scallop Ceviche we were brought was fresh, tangy and exploding with different flavours. The next appetiser we tried was grilled Al Ajillo Shrimps. The pan was full of them so, like all things here, there was plenty to share. Ajillo combines guajillo chilli peppers and ajo (garlic). If you are predisposed against garlic, then this one is not for you. Fortunately for me, I love garlic! Lightly toasted sliced bread was placed on the side to effectively let you make your own prawn toast and, with a light sprinkling of lime on top, I could eat this as a snack for breakfast lunch and dinner.

74

www.ohlalamag.net

Chef Sergio told us he’s proud that his food is correctly balanced and so the true foodie should have no need for sauces to fulfil the dish. I would agree with him and in many cases on his menu there are no sauces at all because what he brings you is the finished article. Of course, no Mexican restaurant could function without limes, so I was glad to see those accompanying most things. Tacos are king at Maya, especially when it’s Taco Tuesdays and you can eat tacos for 15 riyals each all night! I tried three of the best: the brisket beef on a corn taco, the shrimp tempura taco and lastly another beef, this time Wagyu. I took a bite of all three and the explosion in my mouth was indescribable. We also sampled three main courses. The beef fajitas were done perfectly and both spicy and succulent. Quality prime tenderloin served on a grill on a bed of peppers with freshly produced tortilla wraps kept moist in a side pot. A whole salmon on a bed of sweetcorn had a light sauce drizzled on top and was a solid and filling dish. The pescado offering was sea bass which was a handsome serving for those with large appetites. It came piping hot on a pan to retain flavour. The two desserts we ate were both winners. The top pick for presentation points was the in-house version of Tres Leches which featured coffee and chocolate sponge cake and was immaculately served up in a deep dark bowl. And my ultimate favourites were the churros, which were the best I’ve eaten in this town. Staff service is particularly high here and noteworthy for the depth of knowledge of the menu and ingredients, mixed with a relaxed vibe. The restaurant itself is dark and seductive with lots of hidden or semi-private spaces to gather with friends. The key to enjoying Maya is sharing!

T

he BMW 5-Series boasts a rich tradition dating back to 1972. Now in its seventh generation, this executive model is enjoying global popularity with discerning customers. We at OHLALA have always admired and respected the BMW brand and have had the privilege of test driving a multitude of models over the years, all of which have been impressive to say the least. This month, thanks to the outstanding team at Alfardan Automobiles, we received the opportunity to thoroughly inspect the new BMW 520i Sedan as well as see what it’s capable of on the roads. The sporty nature of the 520i Sedan is obvious as soon as you lay your eyes on it. With its large, clean surfaces, beautiful lines and athletic proportions, this vehicle is definitely something you would like to see in your garage every morning. The lengthy bonnet is complemented by the bold BMW kidney grille featuring a new octagonal form, whilst adaptive LED headlights with automatic range control are fitted as standard, all of which deliver a solid visual impact. The set-back passenger compartment, short overhangs and long wheelbase display the now familiar dimensions of the BMW 5 Series, that we have come to know and love. The aerodynamic design of the 520i is obvious

from the flanks and 18-inch wheels with red or blue painted callipers are fitted as standard. At the rear, new L-shaped taillights with black edging add yet another touch of class to an already beautiful exterior. Trapezoid tailpipe finishers are now fitted as standard on all BMW 5 Series models and are integrated into the rear apron inlay on both the right and left sides. Slipping inside the vehicle, we were greeted by a stunningly beautiful interior with loads of room available. All materials, trims and finishes used are of the highest quality, as one would expect from BMW, and this, combined with precise workmanship, delivers a modern, premium ambience to the new 5 Series’ cabin. The interior blends contemporary elegance with a driver-focused cockpit design, ensuring an ideal environment for a journey of any length. The electrically adjustable front seats are supportive and exceptionally comfy whilst the automatic climate control with extended features further adds to the comfort on offer. Increasing the functionality of the vehicle are the large storage compartments, door pockets as well as dual drink holders in both the front and rear. We also found the leg, head and shoulder room to be very generous, with three adults fitting easily in the back. The luggage compartment has a load capacity of 530 litres, an area hugely increased with the rear seats folded flat.

“With its large, clean surfaces, beautiful lines and athletic proportions, this vehicle is definitely something you would like to see in your garage every morning.”

DIVA Drives The iDrive control and operation system of the BMW 520i comprises a freestanding Control Display that now includes, as standard, a 10.25-inch screen featuring outstanding graphic quality. This Control Display can be upgraded to a 12.3-inch unit if requested. We found this system to be very user-friendly and easily navigated our way through all the functions. Newly designed controls on the centre console have surfacing in highgloss black and, along with the standard leather steering wheel with freshly arranged multifunction buttons, add to the refinement of this luxury sedan. Once out on the roads, the fun really began. The 520i is powered by a fourcylinder, in-line petrol engine that includes mild hybrid technology and an eight-speed Steptronic transmission. It has a capacity of 1998cc and an output of 184hp at 5000 to 6500rpm. It produces 290Nm of torque at 1350 to 4250rpm and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in a respectable 7.9 seconds. It boasts a top speed of 235km/h and, believe us when we tell you, this car feels fast! With excellent handling, suspension, and cornering abilities, supported by a superb braking system, we always felt in complete control of the driving experience. With a vast array of driver assistance and safety features, you can relax in the knowledge that the master craftsmen at BMW have done everything possible to ensure the safety of all occupants.

MISS Ohlala

FEED YOUR WANDERLUST

EVEN THOUGH WE CANNOT TRAVEL AS MUCH AS WE WOULD LIKE TO, WE KEEP FINDING WAYS TO GET OUT OF THE ROUTINE. BE IT BY DAYDREAMING OR EXPLORING OUR OWN GROUNDS. “Travelling - it leaves you speechless and then turns you into a storyteller.” Ibn Battuta Ibn Battuta was a Muslim Moroccan scholar, jurist and explorer who widely travelled the Old World. His journeying mainly occurred in the lands of Dar Al-Islam, and he was the explorer that travelled more than any other in pre-modern history. He wrote one of the world’s most famous travel logs, the Rihlah. His work describes people, places and cultures he encountered in the 120,000km spanned across and beyond the Islamic world. Travelling is now one of the most praised leisure activities of the modern world, it is easy to visit every corner of the globe, you are just one flight or a couple of flights away from everywhere. Much, much easier than during Ibn Battuta’s times. However, Covid-19 changed this reality. We can’t just go to places as we could before or at least not with the same ease. There are restrictions and the fear of being infected. So, we dream of travelling, making plans, and going on a voyage through the pages of a magazine or TV show. We explore our own countries, visiting places we would never go to, and experience spectacular staycations; yes, there are various hotels and resorts in our city that are worth a visit. We keep being astonished by new things, and we tell stories differently; we are human beings, we adapt. So, what are the stories you are going to tell next?
