Happy New Year! If you’re a fan of New Year’s resolutions, or just fancy incorporating some healthy changes into your daily life, then turn to our guide on ringing in the changes for January 2015 and beyond. There’s some great ideas for becoming a healthier, happier you! Change can be challenging - sticking with it even more so, it’s easy to slip back into habits that don’t serve you or aren’t taking you towards your goals – it takes continuous dedication and self-motivation to break a lifetime of patterns and become a better version of yourself. Your desire to change must be greater than your desire to stay the same… It’s also oh so easy to make excuses and lay the blame on circumstances or other people. True strength and courage comes from being able to look within and take responsibility for one’s actions… We’ve a wide variety of interviews with successful women who can inspire you to achieve your goals. Check out the Palestinian Diva Drivers – defying convention, they’re the region’s first all-women street racing team. They recently starred in the documentary Speed Sisters, which premiered at the 2014 Ajyal Film Festival in Doha. In Celebrity Scoop we chat with Katie White from the award-winning duo The Ting Tings, on music, life and recipes for success. We also catch up with the brainchild behind the culturally expressive fashion brand Bil Arabi. Nadine Kanso speaks about her exotic twist on the Arabian art of calligraphy. For your monthly fashion fix turn to our style pages where we highlight noteworthy Cruise and Resort collections for 2015. Then the Planet Wayfarer fashion shoot embraces a cool palette of sporty, futuristic looks from the Spring-Summer 2015 collections, contrasting with the rich, warm colours of the barren desert. Wishing you a love-filled 2015! Kirsty Edwards-Harris Editor-in-Chief

Mother

Earth

Nature, particularly animals, insects and flowers, has challenged goldsmiths and jewellers for millennia; each generation aims to capture the transient beauty of the natural world in its own language and style‌ When De Grisogono interprets nature, it is always highly stylised, unsentimental, inspired by form, shape and silhouette, by character, and as in Gocce, fluid, tactile and sculptural. Fawaz Gruosi has captured the sense of surging, unstoppable growth, the simplicity of a swollen flowerbud, bursting with new life, and the sensuality of the drop, a quintessential, archetypal natural form. The drop shapes, impeccably sculpted in gold, some smothered in diamonds, or hand carved from precious gemstones, are perfectly proportioned, and massed closely together, with the randomness of nature, to sweep around the finger. This year, the Gocce collection grows and flourishes, with a series of spectacular and timelessly elegant rings in new materials and colour combinations, smooth and glossy carved emerald and amethyst, white diamonds and black quartz, white diamonds and turquoise, pink gold with amethyst, or pink gold, with drops highlighted in rich brown gold, a De Grisogono signature.

BOTTEGA VENETA For Cruise 2015, Bottega Veneta presents a collection that emphasises painterly colours, fluid lines, and intriguing dying and bleaching techniques. The result is looks that are relaxed and unselfconscious in appearance, yet on closer inspection reveal unusual craftsmanship. The palette is dominated by pastels inspired by the frescoes of Tiepolo, as if by accident, there are also touches of brights and darks. Silhouettes are easy and unconstrained. Lengths vary from short to long, depending on the allure. Materials are lightweight and transitional, www.ohlala-magazine.com

GUCCI The Cruise 2015 collection explores the dichotomy between sheer beauty and inner strength. Surface and substance. The Gucci woman expresses her innate duality with optical and tactile illusions. Designs reveal repurposed materials, trompe-l’oeil effects, and a new abstraction of the House’s most iconic print.

“Resort 2015 was inspired by the sun bleached palette of Milton Avery. The mood is relaxed; the silhouettes casual, clean and structured. We focused on craftsmanship: printed laser-cut cotton, lacquered guipure lace, intricate embroideries inspired by my mother’s old handkerchiefs, and accessories like the season’s bucket bag with crochet leather handles.” ~ Tory Burch

JIMMY Energy. Movement.

CHOO Strength. Power.

A redefined aesthetic emerges for Jimmy Choo Cruise 2015, with today’s active and modern woman playing the role as muse. Constantly connected, always on, moving from day to night, city to city, business to leisure, creative director Sandra Choi responds by uniting function with style, fusing luxury traditions with technology to create a sporty collection that keeps up the pace while preserving the allure.

“I imbued the collection with a sense of performance glamour, merging the sensibility of athletic wear with the speed and sleek style of a race car. Luxe details and high-tech materials work their way into strappy stilettos and sporty sneakers with equal measure.” Sandra Choi, Creative Director 22

COACH

Stuart Vevers’ Coach Cruise 2015 collection is inspired by the bright neon lights of New York City and Coney Island inspire. Injecting fun, optimism and an original technical glow into the winter season, this limited edition collection takes the spirit of authentic Coach, with its rich saddle-coloured leather, and explodes it with a playful riff on neon. “Bubbled” hardware coated in neon rubber, neon binding and neon trims make a surprising juxtaposition with Coach’s signature, natural saddle-coloured leather on a family of downtown bags and accessories that includes, for the first time, a leather-andneon-trimmed C.O.A.C.H. bicycle.

Ohlala! catches up with Nadine Kanso about the creation of Bil Arabi – her exotic twist on the Arabian art of calligraphy.

28

OHLALA!

Style

N

adine Kanso’s inspiration was to create a line to reflect both a personal message, as well as a strong cultural one - and the best way to say it? Bil Arabi, of course, her mother tongue and the source for everything she wants to express. Bil Arabi began as a singular ring in 2006; a one-off experiment that merged Kanso’s background in design, her love for typography and predilection for all things bling bling. Soon afterwards, one letter led to the whole alphabet, which evolved to complete words and eventually full phrases. People began expressing themselves “Bil Arabi”.

Bil Arabi by Nadine Kanso What inspires you to create? Nadine Kanso. People… places… events... When one travels, attends shows and meet diverse amounts of people, one cannot help but think and eventually be inspired, but I have to say that inspiration comes from within, after so many years of creative work I stand by this firmly. How do you incorporate your culture into the pieces? NK. My pieces are all about culture, it is about our language and language is culture. The beauty of Arabic calligraphy has long stood to be an art by itself. What can we expect from your upcoming collection? www.ohlala-magazine.com

NK. There are always new designs throughout the year. We just introduced two collections in September and October. So more designs will come closer to the summer, which I cannot be too specific about at this point in time. What’s next for Bil Arabi? NK. A lot of interesting collaborations and new projects for 2015! Currently I am working on launching the Bil Arabi Men’s line with Samer Al Amin, this will be officially out this January.

There will also be a capsule collection in March for Art Dubai in collaboration with a great friend and blogger. Who would you most like to see wear your pieces? NK. I like the music industry more than the film industry I have to say, maybe because I’ve gotten to know them better, but they are cool. I have no specific person whom I’d like to dress, I am a strong believer that those who love my designs will wear them. I am always flattered when I see someone wear my pieces, irrespective of who they are. Any advice for aspiring fashion designers? NK. My sincere advice is for them to be unique and have their own identity, this is what will separate them from the rest, even if it is hard at the beginning but they need to stick to who they are and not to who someone else is. Bil Arabi is available at Saks Fifth Avenue OHLALA!

Katie White talks the Ting Tings As one half of award-winning duo, The Ting Tings, Katie White is no stranger to fame. With the release of their third album, Super Critical, Ohlala!’s Ben Whittaker caught up with the artist to discuss music, life and how to still be successful in an ever-evolving industry.

F

ounded back in 2007 following a series of earlier collaborations, The Ting Tings was the brainchild of musicians Katie White and Jules Martino. Katie had been working as a bartender at a venue called The Mill and Jules was producing tracks for a number of different artists at the time they decided to form the band. Says Katie, “ We were influenced by many of the artists we heard at The Mill and I think that helped shape the sound of the Ting Tings.” So where did they get the name from? “Ting Ting was the name of a Chinese friend of mine and after a little research Jules and I found out it actually means ‘the sound of innovation on an open mind’, which was a pretty cool label for what we wanted to do so we went with it.” So was music something that you had always planned on pursuing a career in. “Very much so. Jules was in his first band at the age of 11 and so was I. I think when you know that something fits you have to embrace it. “ As you were growing up what music was influencing you? “Well in all honesty I grew up listening to any old stuff on the radio, so as a teenager it was Spice Girls and Take That but the first record I ever bought was the song Mr Vain by EuroDance group Culture Beat. “Then when I was around 19 I moved to a place called Islington Mill in Salford, it had 40 artists living and working there. Within a month I had found bands like Talking Heads, The Smiths, Blondie, LCD Soundsystem, Le Tigre… Basically it blew my mind! I was really angry with myself for not finding this music sooner!” Once her path was set down the road to a career in music did she get the full backing of her parents? “Both Jules and I were really lucky in that regard because we didn’t face the usual ‘get a real job’ jibes that some people have thrown at them. However, you’ve also got to

www.ohlala-magazine.com

remember that this is a very fickle business and very few artists actually enjoy a long career in music any more, so it does require some consideration. “The way music is listened to and shared these days makes it a more challenging process.” On the subject of “challenging” how hard was it to write their third album? “It was really easy and perhaps more importantly also really enjoyable. If anything we suffered more on the second album, which is traditionally the one that often stumps many artists. “We both love writing as well as performing and the songs are always just written by the two of us. We can use anything from a guitar to an iPad as part of that process so no two songs are ever the same.” How would you classify your music? “Hmm…it’s difficult! I think we are quite a strange band to place. We write pop, we love pop! But the way that we function is not typical of a normal pop band. We change our sound quite a lot!” What about the touring side of your work? Do you like performing? “Very much. It’s the best way to connect with your fans but after two years on tour you do start to look forward to the more conventional stuff. Because we have been working on the album in Ibiza It feels good to be off an island and in the big cities again. “That said, we do have a tour around the UK, Japan and then the US underway so there isn’t much time to stop still for too long!” Social media is such an important component for many musician’s, do you use it? “Absolutely! Our band first started on MySpace and it was paramount to what we did as a new band, to get the word out there. Twitter, Instagram and Facebook are our main ways of staying in touch with our fans!”

Celebrity Scoop

“Ting Ting was the name of a Chinese friend of mine and after a little research Jules and I found out it actually means ‘the sound of innovation on an open mind’, which was a pretty cool label for what we wanted to do so we went with it.”

You have both been in the industry for over seven years now so how do you think it has changed since you first embarked on your career as the Ting Tings? “I think in a way its a lot tougher for new bands. Those first records we sold on our own label gave us the little bit of cash to get us on tour. There are so many artists out there now that it can be really difficult to get noticed and with information overload attention spans are short. “BUT it’s nice that songs can blow up without radio, you can have a really nice relationship with people that enjoy your music and you have somewhere instant to put your creativity so there are two sides to the coin.” Are there any artists you would like to perform or write with? “Oh, my goodness. So many! Prince of course – who wouldn’t. David Byrne, Stevie Nicks (I’m obsessed), Lindsay Buckingham (Jules is obsessed!). I could go on with a list that would never end! There are just so many talented people out there and you can

only hope that you get the chance to work with one or two.” For so many people music would be an interest or an escape but as it is your career what do you do outside of that environment to pass the time? “Ha! We have no time! Music takes over your life and there is very little space for anything else. I love animals but I can’t honestly say either of us is able to commit to anything in any great way at the moment. “I love to sew and I enjoy designing and making clothes and Jules paints so we certainly have other potential career paths if the music suddenly folds or we decide to try something else! “Right now we are happy as we are.” The Ting Tings latest album Super Critical is out now on CD and digital download and you can find out more details of their extensive tour by visiting their website at www.thetingtings.com

New year new you

You are what you eat An essential element to a person’s health is the food that they put into their body. You need energy; make sure that your fueling your body rather than poisoning it with these easy steps. Naturopathy, or naturopathic medicine, is an alternative form of medicine based on the healing power of nature. It is a holistic approach taking into account the whole of the person: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects. These need to be in balance to achieve optimum health and the state of happiness Naturopaths believe that ultimately, “health is a vibrant state of wellness rather than just the absence of illness.” The two main causes for misbalance in any disease/illness are: toxicity and deficiencies. The naturopath starts by understanding

the client’s body, mind, and spirit and can use additional holistic tools to assess their state, such as Iridology, QMA – Quantum Magnetic Resonance Analysis, Morphopsychology and Biotypology to identify the root causes of misbalance. Once the root causes have been identified, the focus for healing is on treatment with diet and nutrition, naturally occurring substances (herbal remedies and supplements) and noninvasive natural treatments (such as reflexology, hydrotherapy, energy healing, stress reliving techniques: breathing, meditation, emotional healing.).

Steps to A New You

“We are what we eat” – Each species on this planet has their digestive system designed for certain foods. We are NOT an exemption and belong to the species of homo-sapiens. Therefore maximum RAW foods (high in nutrients), lots of nuts, seeds, fruits, green leaves, vegetables (roots) and little protein. However, this is a general rule. Diet is also personalised in terms of constitution, sex, age, level of activity etc. Foods need to be as fresh as possible, as organic as possible, as raw as possible. Foods to avoid include all processed foods, overeating, overcooking.

Healthy Lifestyle – Take moderate and regular exercise, detoxing regulary (at least at four times per year – at seasonal changes) by drinking just water or juice fasting for several days. There are different types of cures, which can overcome deficiencies that are very common today.

Healthy Mind - “We are what we think” Just like we detox the body, we need to detox the mind and be aware of and control the thought processes that occur. Personal development is part of the lifestyle hygiene just like going to the dentist.

Happy soul – “I believe in miracles” “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a temporary human experience,” says Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. Spirituality and growth is essential to our existence. For more information, make a personal consultation with Naturopath and Iridologist, Dejana Subsol – 3884 4371, info@dsnaturopathy.com, www.dsnaturopathy.com 44

New year new you

Beauty lies within Growth is integral to the human existence, the development of the total intellect of a person, the realisation of the human potential… Look into these alternative therapies to expand your knowledge and awareness…

Courses in Jikiden Reiki

Reiki to re-balance your mind and body

Jikiden Reiki is the original and most simple form of Reiki as taught by Dr. Usui in Japan in the early 1900’s. It is the most precise and authentic form in the world, a treatment method to improve Body and Mind. Learning Jikiden Reiki will give you the natural tools to improve your own health, happiness and balance plus the chance to help others achieve the same. On completion of the course, you will be registered with the Jikiden Reiki Institute in Japan, and you receive a beautiful hand written certificate in Japanese Kanji from Japan. Reiki Shares - There will also be an opportunity for graduates to come and share their experiences with other students, as well as practice Reiki. Courses are also available in two other different Reiki systems - Usui Reiki Ryoho (Western Reiki) and Karuna Reiki.

Reiki is a traditional Japanese healing method that channels concentrated energy to re-vitalise the body and restore balance. Rei means ‘Universal’ and Ki ‘the vital life force of energy that flows through all living things’. Reiki is unique in that it can be learnt by anyone and used personally as well as on others. The benefits of Reiki are enormous. When our body does not have enough energy to repair itself, Reiki can directly channel pure healing energy that does not conflict with any other treatments. Sickness is caused when harmful toxins accumulate in the body. Regular sessions of Reiki re-energise the body and flush out the damaging toxins to restore balance and wellness. It offers a wonderful way of melting away stress and tension, resulting in relaxation and inner peace. Reiki is a wonderful tool for personal growth and a gift to anyone touched by it, a resource you will have for life, to use in whichever way you choose. 46

Neuro Linguistic Programming NLP stands for ‘Neuro Linguistic Programming’ and has been around since the 1970s when its co-founders, Richard Bandler and John Grinder first modelled other therapists. NLP is frequently known as the “user’s manual for your mind” and studying NLP gives us insights into how our thinking patterns can affect every aspect of our lives. It looks at the way in which we think and process our thoughts (Neuro), the language patterns we use (Linguistic) and our behaviours (Programming) and how these interact to have a positive (or negative) effect on us as individuals. NLP is a collection of a wide range of methods and models, which create an understanding of thought process and behaviour. Understanding these techniques can bring about a positive change in you and others. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Keep eyes soft & light.

It all starts with great skin.

Cleansing, exfoliating, toning and moisturising – all contribute to making your skin glow. Borrow this makeup look from Diane by first using a primer and then opting for a liquid lightweight foundation, which still provides the right coverage.

Go with bold brows.

Using an applicator or brush instead of a pencil, will give you strong brows without looking too harsh.

Go for a delicate peachy shade applied lightly into the crease to complete this minimal makeup look. Use a brush that’s not too dense or it’ll deposit too much product.

Lash up subtly.

Finish with a mascara that provides definition (instead of volume). Curl your lashes first to open up your eyes subtly.

It’s a surprisingly large car, which is in engineering, with the rear wheels providing most of the deceptive, because you expect a Ferrari to have smaller, sports power, and the front wheels kicking in only when needed car dimensions. However, we parked it next to a Mercedes S Class in a hotel forecourt, to our amazement the FF was through a second gearbox at the front of the car. ‘Only when needed’ means in comfort or snow modes and easily as long as the big luxury barge. Coupled with the very only between first and fourth gears. This essentially makes it long bonnet and low seating position, this can make parking safely driveable in all weather conditions, whilst still behaving in a mall a jaw-clenching affair! The interior of the FF is a glorious place to be, with a great like a rear-wheel-drive car when you want to go a bit mental. Then you’ve also got the engine start/stop button, the damper button (set to soft for bumpy roads), indicators, washers and high beam, and it all feels like a bit much when you first climb in. However, after a few hours of driving it all becomes second nature, and once you’re used to it, it feels amazingly intuitive, with your fingers going instantly to the buttons you need without even thinking about it. The best thing about the FF, though, is that utterly beautiful 6.3l, 660hp, 683Nm naturally-aspirated V12. It’s glorious, and quite simply the fastest car I’ve ever driven. Power delivery is furious and linear, with a soul-stirring Ferrari howl, and just doesn’t stop. It’ll hit 100km/h in 3.7 seconds, which admittedly isn’t the fastest I’ve ever reached 100 before, but the amazing thing is how it will just keep accelerating on from there. We didn’t quite hit the 335km/h top speed, but we weren’t too far off, and it will quite happily cruise at 180km/h like it’s the simplest thing in the world! 72

“When considering the FF, the question should not be: Is this still a real Ferrari? The question should be: For a comfortable and practical four-seater, four-wheel drive car, does it still feel like a Ferrari?” The downside? It devours fuel at an eye-watering rate. Over the four days we had it, we had to completely refill the tank twice, bearing in mind it was full when we picked it up. Yes, we did many hours of driving, but to even consider what this car would cost you to run in Europe made our credit cards twitch in fear. But then, anyone who could afford a Ferrari thinks nothing of such trivial matters! Power is transferred to the road via the incredible sevenspeed double-clutch gearbox, with gear changes so fast they’re almost imperceptible to the human brain. When combined, the engine, gearbox and transmission create something that is truly unique in this world. When considering the FF, the question should not be: Is this still a real Ferrari? The question should be: For a comfortable and practical four-seater, four-wheel drive car, does it still feel like a Ferrari? And the answer to that is, yes, it most certainly does! It’s a supercar that you can live with every day, and enjoy every last minute of every drive, whether it’s to the shops, or to another country. It’s superb! www.ohlala-magazine.com

The Palestinian Diva Drivers Premiering last month at the Ajyal Film Festival in Doha was Speed Sisters, a documentary by Amber Fares featuring the region’s first all-women street racing team. Ohlala! catches up with Amber to find out more Images by Tanya Habjouqa

Speed Sisters is a documentary about the lives of five Palestinian women who are defying convention by forming Palestine’s only all-female motor racing team. The girls compete in drift and gymkhana competitions across the region, breaking boundaries, winning over crowds, and taking home their fair share of trophies in the process. The movie was made by Lebanese-Canadian filmmaker Amber Fares, who came across the girls whilst living in Palestine. How and when did you first hear about the girls, and what made you decide to make the movie? AF. I lived in Palestine for seven years, and I first heard about women racing there through a friend of mine, Suha Aweida, who was one of the first women to race in Palestine. The first race we went to was in Bethlehem in 2009. It blew me away. The race took place on Arafat’s old helicopter landing pad on a hill in Bethlehem. There was easily 1000 people there, dancing and cheering. It was just such an amazing, festive scene. And in the middle of it were these four women. I just knew I had to learn more about them. I liked the idea that these women were doing something that was completely unexpected. When you think of Palestine you do not normally equate it with racecar driving, let alone women racing. I saw an opportunity for a surprising tale from the Middle East that people all over the world could relate to. Plus, it just seemed like such a cool story! How important do you think the movie is in terms of giving the world a different perspective of Palestine? AF. I think all films are important. There are a lot of great films about Palestine that show different aspects of society. Five Broken Cameras, Salt of this Sea, Omar. I think all of these films together help to reframe the bleak picture that the public may have of that place. I hope that Speed Sisters is able to contribute to this as well. How difficult was it to make the movie, in terms of getting permission to access Palestine with camera crews, etc? AF. Getting permission to film in Palestine was 74

OHLALA!

Everyone respected the Speed Sister as they were excelling and following their passions.

quite easy. The motorsport federation was very accommodating and allowed for us to have cameras at the races. In general, it was easy to film in the West Bank. It got a bit trickier when it came to filming near checkpoints. We would either try to hide our cameras, or use smaller cameras like GoPros. How much resistance do the Speed Sisters face in Palestine amongst more conservative members of society who think that perhaps this isn’t the right type of activity for ladies? AF. I’m sure this exists, but I’ll be honest, I didn’t witness it. Everyone that we spoke to about the team seemed quite supportive. They may not

have wanted their daughters or sisters to race, but they respected the fact that these women were excelling and following their passions. Did they face much animosity from male members of the Palestinian motorsports community who felt that the girls were invading a man’s world? AF. Again, there may have been some animosity at the beginning. But by the time I joined them I found nothing but a tremendous amount of backing from the male drivers. Also, the head of the racing federation, Khaled Qadoora was extremely helpful in creating a space where women could race. He would have a car at every race that women would be able to use. It is a very supportive community. How much international interest has there been for the documentary? Have any TV channels picked it up? AF. We have had a great deal of interest. There have been hundreds of articles from around the world written about the team and the documentary. We have had over 600 people from 30 different countries contribute to our crowdfunding campaigns. And there has been interest from TV channels around the world. www.ohlala-magazine.com

quite as rare as the Ferrari Sergio, this special 45th anniversary Nissan GT-R is still nevertheless a Limited Edition, which always gets my attention! Based on the 2015 Nissan GT-R, the “45th Anniversary” comes with a special paint colour, “Silica Brass” – the same trademark color as the Skyline GT-R M-Spec R34 Type released in 2001. It also features an exclusive emblem on the lower part of the interior centre cluster and an exclusive model plate number in the engine compartment. Also on my wish list was the stunning new Mercedes CLS you see pictured here. The new four-door coupe from my favourite luxury German automaker features the kind of sleek, streamlined and yet handsome styling that really catches my eye, and I want it! Specifically, the AMG variant with the 585hp twin-turbo V8… This last one, however, is going to be on the wish list for next year, as the all-new Land Rover Discovery Sport hasn’t actually hit showroom floors yet. I did attend the regional unveiling in the UAE last month though, and instantly took a liking to it! It’s the new compact SUV from Land Rover, and you can see how they’ve tied it much more

Our resident Diva Driver, Lisa Speed, heads in to January a bit miffed that Santa didn’t put the car keys to any of the following in her stocking…

Not that I was expecting to find the keys to this first one under the tree, to be honest. There’re only six of them in the world, after all. But this super-exclusive Ferrari Sergio might just be one of the most beautiful cars I’ve ever seen, so it’s always nice to dream! Based on the Ferrari 458 Spider, the Sergio is a special edition roadster created by the worldwww.ohlala-magazine.com

famous coachbuilder and boutique design studio Pininfarina to celebrate the spirit and core values of the historic Cambiano company in the 60th anniversary year of its collaboration with the Prancing Horse. Needless to say, Sergio was the only possible choice of name for the model, in homage to great Sergio Pininfarina, who sealed the unique, longstanding partnership with Ferrari. Next year Santa. Next year… This next model was more realistic, but alas, Santa failed me on this one too! Although not

closely to the new Range Rover Sport, both with the ‘Sport’ in the name, and also with the exterior styling, especially those front lights and grille. Despite being the compact offering, I can tell you that it’s still very spacious inside, even boasting a third (albeit cramped) row for a total of seven seats, And, being a Land Rover, it can still take on the most rugged terrain that a morning school run through Budaiya can throw at you! Ah well, no car keys under the tree for 2014, I guess I’ll just have to try to be a good girl in 2015! Yeah right… OHLALA!

An Art Collective

With an aim to set works by Bahraini artists up on the world stage, The Curators, working together with Tutela, have created a ripple of creativity that now seems unstoppable. WORDS BY KARINA LAZARRAGA

Young, enthusiastic and ambitious, The Curators aim to put the spotlight on the cultural value of art and help society to better understand the importance of both the individual artist and the creative process. The Curators, an art collective composed of Suad Alhalwachi, Jihad Munther and Maryam Munther Al Razqi; aim to provide aspiring and famous Bahraini artists 76

with access to a platform that provides opportunities not only for recognition; “We hope to provide artists with a lifechanging hub that gathers them regardless of background and age,” says one of the founders, Suad Alhalwachi. “Our exposure to international education and experiences inspired us to discover and reveal the hidden gems of our beloved country,” she adds.

Suad explains their rationale: “Artists with limited experience or no track record have an inconsiderable shot at gallery representation, as most galleries are not accepting new submissions.” The Curators promote the development of Bahraini artists by providing prestigious exhibition opportunities. Working with talented artists of all disciplines – from paintings to sculpture through to photography and more, they “expose artists’ work through the correct avenues, provide them with access to the right audience, market their artwork, and sell it,” Suad says. The group recently held their first major event – a gala dinner that brought artists all over the island together. It was also a celebration of Bahraini art with the making of their first book, ‘Unleashing Bahraini www.ohlala-magazine.com

Artists’. The event included a showcase of the work of artists that are included in the book as well as a presentation of awards and entertainment. In the lead-up to the book’s publication, The Curators aim to include 200 artists. On a grander scale, they have collaborated with the Belgium-based Tutela – a wealth management and art valuation company to realise their goals. Their first step was to commission Tutela to do a Contemporary Art Market Report in the kingdom. Tutela’s report found Bahrain to be a unique place for art and culture in the Gulf. Quoting Tutela’s study, it says: “Bahrain maintains a wise policy aimed at developing its own market, and own artists, enriched by thousands of years of culture and civilisation unique to this archipelago. “Offering physical places for [artists] to exhibit, the art scene is flourishing with diversity and originality. The many public www.ohlala-magazine.com

spaces on the island are not devoted to the latest Western frenzy, or to French impressionist masters, but to the actual work of the Bahraini people, and the long, rich history of Bahrain.” Encouraged by Bahrain’s robust arts scene, Tutela opened a branch in the Kingdom – to invest in its arts market and the country. Their operations include putting together

“We hope to provide artists with a lifechanging hub.” local and international art collections, arts valuation and advisory. Using cutting-edge technology for valuing art, Tutela forecasts a strong growth in the market. This collaboration has also seen Tutela create the first online art auction in Bahrain for international, emerging and regional artists – with all works available for purchase directly from Tutela. Indeed, the contemporary art market is the logical continuation of Bahrain’s long tradition of arts and crafts, and The Curators and Tutela are well positioned to promote the wealth of artistic potential in the country. ‘Where Care Meets Expertise’ A candid chat with Jacob Thomas, Royal Bahrain Hospital’s Director of Operations reveal that ethics play a very important role in providing the best health care there is.

W

ith a lengthy career in hospital management, Dr Jacob Thomas has been at the helm of overseeing the hospital planning and business operations of hospitals in the Indian Subcontinent, GCC countries, East Africa and Southeast Asia. We get his expert insight into what it takes to turn a hospital into a roaring success. What does your role entail? JT. I oversee the entire operations of the KIMS Group in GCC (KIMS Holding Company, which owns a majority of the stakes of Royal Bahrain Hospital, KIMS Bahrain Medical Centre and other units in GCC also under its management). All unit heads report to me and I in turn report to the Board of Directors of the holding company. What challenges come with the job? JT. There are several. Obtaining licenses can be challenging and licenses are very important to this business. Approvals from certain entities take time; and also there are delays to some projects, which has a direct effect on our cost. However, 78

OHLALA!

you accept these things and device the best solutions as much as possible. How do you motivate your team? JT. There are many factors one has to consider especially when managing a big team. My aim is to always align people with our objectives. I do my best to understand why people behave the way they do. Emotions sometimes come into play – that’s normal, so I balance that by recognising and building on that certain individual’s strength in order to build a strong team. What core principles do you follow at Royal Bahrain Hospital? JT. We believe in delivering the best health care whenever and wherever possible – in the most ethical manner and with no additional cost to the patient. We believe in fairness and we don’t cut corners. We strive to work only with the best equipment and technology available. We are an equal opportunity employer. We get only the best doctors and specialists because it’s the only way

“We believe in fairness and we don’t cut corners.”

to build a good hospital. We do all these to ensure our patients get only the very best and in turn, our team is highly motivated, energetic and funloving – always putting the patients’ interest first. What are you looking to achieve this year? JT. We are certainly looking at expansion plans for the year to enable us to provide more comprehensive health care services. The plans would most certainly include adding Oncology services, Organ Transplant and a dedicated Mother & Child Centre. We also want to have a presence in certain ‘small pockets’ of the kingdom where our services are needed – putting up small facilities in certain areas for people to get the best care right at their doorstep. www.ohlala-magazine.com

OHLALA! RENDEZVOUS

At The Top of Her Game

A pilot by trade, Jonna Konivouri is also a professional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu artist. She talks to Ohlala! about her passion for the sport, its challenges and how she keeps at the top of her game.

After an eleven-to-twelve-hour flight, Jonna dashes off to her BJJ class to train. This is how her diary usually goes and it is gruelling when you understand that BJJ or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a combat sport that involves grappling and ground fighting using joint locks and chokes. Whilst in secondary school in Finland, Jonna trained in Muay Thai and Kickboxing but they were more like a hobby for her. After military service, she continued her studies and worked as a part-time security guard to pay for her rent. She was soon introduced to BJJ and started with a basic course. She eventually took her training seriously and began to compete. From then on, she knew it would become her passion. Jonna has gone on to compete professionally on the global stage. To date she has won three silver medals at the BJJ World Championships in Long Beach, California. Finally, last year, she bagged the gold medal at the same international competition. ”It was one of the greatest moments of my life. Reaching my goals and winning in tournaments gives me a feeling that is difficult to compare to anything else,” Jonna beams. Jonna represents Alliance Bahrain team, and trains with Master Reza Monfaradi as her coach. 80

OHLALA!

”You do what you have to do to reach your goals and dreams.”

Alliance Bahrain is part of the international Alliance team and their head coach is Master Fabio Gurgel who has his BJJ Academy in Sao Paolo, Brazil. Being Oman-based (working as a pilot for Oman Air), she trains at Muscat Mixed Martial Arts Club. For higher level training, she goes to Al Ain, UAE where there’s a large BJJ training centre with several black belt fighters. If on holiday in Finland, she trains with her old team, Alliance Helsinki. For Jonna, her challenge is how to fit her training into her schedule. “As a pilot, my working hours are very irregular. I can always arrange time for independent training like jogging or weight training. It’s not easy but I try to manage it as well as possible. Often I have to hurry after flying 11 to 12 hours straight, to go to my BJJ class or after a BJJ class, I head straight to a night flight. I do feel tired sometimes but you do what you have to do to reach your goals and dreams. I would also call it a passion.” Any advice to those who wish to pursue this passion? “Visit your nearest BJJ club and join a beginners class. BJJ is a great sport for everybody and it’s never too late to start training. It’s not easy but training is the only way to become better!”

Jonna’s Fitness Tips: ”Follow a simple rule: Train hard, eat right and rest well! Challenge yourself always when training. Right diet and good rest is also as important as training. I’ve noticed that ladies often skip meals or they only eat salads and fruits when they want to burn fat. This is a big mistake. Eat small portions every three to four hours and have a combination of high-quality proteins like chicken, fish or beef and good carbs and fats. Load your body during the day with carbs and have more proteins in the evening. Avoid sugars and all kinds of unhealthy extra snacks. Drink enough water every day.”

“RCSI Bahrain is utilising its prowess in specific fields of expertise to work with the wider community.”

A Noble Cause The non-profit organisation, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland-Bahrain (RCSI Bahrain), endeavour to enhance health in the Kingdom and in the GCC through innovation and collaboration in education, research and service.

F

ounded in 1784, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland’s (RCSI) noble purpose lives on until today. Professor Sameer Otoom, president of RCSI Bahrain, tells us, “As a healthcare provider, RCSI Bahrain is utilising its prowess in specific fields of expertise to work with the wider community to facilitate a strong and sustainable community engagement programme, which represents the third pillar of our strategic plan. This is achieved through collaborations within the university itself and with outside entities, which are both private organisations and government bodies.” Community involvement has always been high on the agenda for RCSI Bahrain, so in 2012 a five-year strategic plan saw the development of a Community Engagement Office, which is one of three strategic pillars. 82

OHLALA!

In a short span of time, this department already saw an increase of 85 per cent in registered volunteers within one year of being established. Its function also includes support for the Operation of the Bahrain Diabetes Mobile Unit donated by Rotary Club of Manama, which sees their Nursing students educate primary school children from both government and private schools about the importance of health lifestyle and activity. Their annual Charity Challenge is also a big feature on the academic calendar and funds from their previous events support local charity organisations, Bahrain Mobility International and Bahrain Diabetes Society. The upcoming 2015 event will be geared towards supporting cardiac health. A CPR event which saw 300 of the lay public educated on ‘Hands Only CPR’ has turned into two research papers, a poster

resent at the World Cardiac Conference, and an instruction video (in English with Arabic subtitle) available on YouTube. All these show the commitment the university has to RCSI’s noble purpose. Their reach not only goes locally and regionally – but they also have a strong International Community Engagement programme which sees their undergraduate students visiting Lesotho, Vietnam and India. RCSI Bahrain through the Community Engagement Office also undertake a host of other charitable initiatives in Bahrain such as The Paediatric Diabetes Mobile Unit – a collaborative pilot project between the Bahrain Diabetes Society (BDS) which is ongoing; and the Shurooq Camp for Children with diabetes – an annual event hosted by the Bahrain Diabetes Society (BDS). The 15th Shurooq Camp 2014 was the second time RCSI Bahrain Mobile Unit volunteers took the lead on the educational games and activities section of the programme; Supporting External events such as ‘Health Awareness Days’; Recycling - Go Green Initiatives and Blood Donation Drives among others. www.ohlala-magazine.com

A symposium delivered by Beckett McInroy Consultancy (BMC International), in association with the Bahrain Association of Banks (BAB), for member banks, HR Managers, focused on the topic, ‘Increasing revenues for banks through soft skills’. Held at the Capital Club, the symposium focused on change management, soft skills to enable smooth transition, coaching within organisations and revenue assurance providing the delegates with a variety of interactive sessions, a panel discussion and presentations addressing issues of banking in the region. Presentors included Dr Clare Beckett McInroy, Major Mike Jackson, Riyaz Jivanjee and Delphine Boireau.

Embracing the season of giving, The Westin Bahrain City Centre organised a gingerbread cookie decorating activity for children at the City Centre Bahrain Winter Tales 2014 display at the Central Galleria of the mall. For a fee, children crafted homemade gingerbread men with coloured icing. All the proceeds of the event went to The Palm Association, who directly help needy Bahraini families. The Palm Association also donated T-shirts to the children participating in the activity.

Sofitel Bahrain Sea & Spa presented a donation of BD1,000 to Bahrain Breast Cancer Awareness to show its commitment towards stronger participation in local community initiatives. The funds will be used by the receiving charity, Think Pink towards enhancing awareness amongst residents towards breast cancer, the benefits of earlier detection, as well as to educate students in schools and universities across the country on breast cancer screenings. The cheque was presented by Sofitel Bahrain’s general manager, Samy Boukhaled to Think Pink founder, Julie Sparkel.

Happy Birthday

Your sign gets to welcome in the New Year with enthusiasm and excitement this month and you have a number of positive things to look forward to. Your main focus will be on your career and the possibilities that drive you towards a new role or even a complete change of direction. Now is the time to take the bull by the horns and make that decisive move. On the relationship front there are signs that a long-standing affair could be about to move to the next level and you need to consider whether you’re really ready for what that might mean. You may have wanted this for some time but you need to be clear on exactly what your expectations are. Any business investments are set to take a major turn for the better as you look to solidify a long-term project.

Capricorns are some of the Zodiac’s most determined people and they will employ every effort into getting a job done or succeeding in an ambition. Of course that isn’t to say they always take the most obvious route although where possible this sign will always play things safe. Practical, driven and open to any challenge, they make good leaders but are also happy to work in a team for the good of a collective aim. They are generous but also frugal when it comes to money and they don’t usually risk too much on speculation. They are shrewd in business and can be relied upon to make money in even the most challenging situations. When it comes to romance Capricorns are cautious to let their feelings be known but once they commit they really shine, demonstrating loyalty as well as a deeply romantic side. On the negative side they can be moody and sometimes even prone to depression and their general outlook is more pessimistic than optimistic. They can be possessive and also stubborn if things don’t go their way and their dogmatic nature means they are difficult people who rarely change their minds once they are set.

Ms Capricorn Giovanni reveals

your destiny …

Capricorn

Your loyalty to a close friend will be supremely tested this month as you discover a secret that may compromise your long-term relationship with them. You have a difficult decision to make: confront your friend and risk everything or keep quiet and hope it all goes away. Sooner or later you’ll have to choose but whichever way you go, the outcome is set to cause you major headaches over the coming weeks. If you get the opportunity to take a break then you should grab it with both hands. Something tells me you’re going to need it.

Pisces

Your thoughts are still with an old flame that you can’t seem to get out of your head and this is having a negative impact on your life since it’s obstructing any progress you might hope to make with a new partner. Admittedly, your current situation is not all you hoped it would be but you need to give things time to grow. At the moment you are so obsessed with the past that you are choking any chance of your present situation being a success. Let go! Change isn’t something your sign embraces very well but now is as good a time as any to give it a go!

Aries

Things have been improving all the time on the relationship front since you suffered a slight dip a few months back and it seems that any problems you and a beloved did encounter have now been completely ironed out. This offers the promise of better days ahead and as we move towards the festive season you can feel confident that your partner is as committed to the union as you are. However, things are not so rosy at work and a demanding boss looks set to stretch your patience to the limit. Rather than blow your top, try and sit them down first and talk through your concerns. www.ohlala-magazine.com

Capricorn At-a-Glance

Your thoughts could turn to a distant person who has occupied your thoughts of late and is thinking of you somewhere. Emotionally this leaves your thoughts disjointed and unclear because your heart is longing to be with them but the fear of historical disappointments seems to temper your nature. What you need to decide is just how much they really mean to you because chances are, there is more love than you realise and more potential for success than you could ever have hoped for. Take the risk. It will be worth it!

Gemini

You’re sometimes accused of not seeing things you start through to the end. However, in the coming weeks you’ll prove to many of the doubters around you that – when the occasion calls for it – you can take a task past the finish line if it inspires you enough. And there is no shadow of a doubt that in the case of one particular goal or ambition, you will not be swayed from your course. On the relationship front you could hear from a ex-partner from long ago whose surprise appearance may cause stirrings within you that you would not have expected!

CANCER

You may not be the most articulate of signs but even you know the words required here to solve the burning issue of your life at the moment. It’s quite easy to see that for many of you, a current relationship has just about run its course and now it’s time for a change. Your love affair has driven you to the edge and you have to find the courage to tell the person in question that it’s finally all over. It might not be what you want to hear but if you are to progress beyond these complications then the only way is to affect it in your relationship. Don’t be stubborn, be smart. It’s the only way!

Leo

You have been stretching yourself financially for some time now and it seems that you have finally arrived at breaking point this month as you cannot put off the inevitable any longer. What you really need is some serious advice and you shouldn’t be afraid to speak to someone about it. There’s no sense in bearing this burden alone and trying to sweep the problem under the carpet is not going to solve anything. The sooner you get this out in the open and into the hands of someone who can help you, the sooner you can rest easy once again and bring a little peace of mind back into your life.

virgo

January is going to be all about the turning of a corner for many of you with the development of a new love interest in your life. If only you could listen to your heart a little more rather than always follow the logical route then you might be surprised by what you discover, for it seems that someone close by has amorous intentions towards you and yet their efforts thus far have passed by unnoticed. Take a step back from the industry and mechanics of the world and you might be surprised to discover that there are others things beyond the framework of the logical world.

LIBRA

The time has come for you to face up to a long-standing dispute and try to resolve it because things have gone on far too long without benefit to either yourself or the other party concerned. Sometimes it is the better person who can swallow their pride and make the first move so stop being so stubborn and take matters into your own hands. I guarantee that you’ll feel a lot better about both yourself and the situation if you do. Money-wise, there could be an unforeseen

expense involving the car so make sure there’s a little left in the pot because this “rainy day” is just around the corner.

Scorpio

This month you will receive some excellent news concerning your current role within the workplace and promotion – together with a pay rise – looks set to give you good reason to celebrate. However, your gain is inevitably someone else’s loss and you should prepare to face some flack from a rather ingenuous and jealous colleague who feels that perhaps they were more deserving of the success than you. On the relationship front, a partner may surprise you with some news concerning a move but you will be encouraged by the plans they want you to be part of.

Sagittarius

Just when you thought things were moving along in your favour, prepare to come back down to earth with a bump this month as your usual lucky nature deserts you. It seems that a loose end you left untied several weeks back has returned to haunt you and there is likely to be little you can do about it now, save to face the music and hope for the best. Your natural charm and quick-thinking nature could help ease the full impact but it’s not going to be an easy ride for the next month. If nothing else, this lesson will teach you to be a lot more vigilant in the future. OHLALA!

The path to happiness

Give up your need to always be right. Give up your need for control. Give up on blame. Give up your self-defeating talk. Give up your limiting beliefs Give up complaining. Give up the luxury of criticism. Give up your need to impress others. Give up your resistance to change. Give up labels. Give up on your fears. Give up your excuses. Give up the past. Give up attachment. Give up living your life to other people’s expectations.
