Of Life & Love
rom the time the world began there have been stories of love and romance, but of course, also heartache, betrayal and sacrifice. If we look at the tales told throughout history, mythology and literature, “love” has always been a complicated affair. Many have heard the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, for some, the first “couple” to inhabit the earth, who were cast out of paradise to live in sin for disobedience. Then remember Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, a tragedy about two young starcrossed lovers who fell in love at first sight and took their own lives rather than live without each other; although a very romantic notion, it also rings of obsession and pain. The story of Antony and Cleopatra is also about love surviving against all odds, but again, it ends in sorrow. Literature often tells stories of love blossoming between two people, one of whom is already betrothed or married, “the love triangle” which leads to disastrous consequences. Perhaps Karma plays its part here, if you believe in such notions. In Roman mythology, Cupid is the God of desire and affection, but is portrayed as fickle and mischievous, shooting people with his golden arrow to make them fall in love, often with heartrending results. Even Venus, the Goddess of Love, is famous for her bouts of jealous rage. Then we have the modern day, famous relationship of Prince Charles and Diana, which ended in tragedy, and that of Brad and Angelina Jolie, “a love triangle” affair. These stories can be likened to real life, so it is no surprise that relationships struggle, and with over 50 percent of marriages around the world ending in divorce, one wonders if there really is such a thing as true love. Nowadays, the Western world is obsessed with the notion of romantic love, often finding no real meaning in life until sourcing “the one”. Then, perhaps, settling for second best out of disillusionment. However, all is not lost, lessons can be learned from traditional Eastern traditions of tolerance, acceptance and forgiveness, of love being used as a tool for spiritual growth, the importance of all types of love, not just romantic ones, including that of family and friends, of the world itself, love towards all beings, and what many often forget, learning to love yourself, and celebrating it… Yes! You are an amazing woman, now believe it! Love, in its truest form, really does make the world go round.

ove is all around this month of St Valentine and I love, love, love Lagoona Mall! Having teased myself the past few months and resisted going (what was I thinking?) I finally got there. So shiny, so glossy, so brand-spankingly new… with piped music that wasn’t unbearable, or ignorable, and which I actually enjoyed listening to while I sauntered along the avenues of what is now my favourite mall of the moment. OK, it’s still settling in, and while we wait with baited breath for more outlets to open (although 51 East’s flagship store takes centre stage) there are enough new brands on the block to satisfy the retail therapy prescription I award myself each month. For example, Goelia is a new shop and fashion brand that has so far escaped my attention; I could barely contain my excitement at the sight of rails and rails of refreshingly unique outfits displaying price tags that didn’t make my eyes water. What’s more, many garments were, ‘reduced’, so obviously it would have been rude not to indulge. If, like me, you’ve been dawdling about getting yourself down to Lagoona Mall — now is the time… after all there’s no such thing as too many malls. Now I’m not what you might call an avid Tennis fan — but I can focus my attention long enough to enjoy a match starring highprofile players (providing it doesn’t get drawn out for too long) and all the better if a little drama gets thrown in the mix… saying that, the final of the ExxonMobil Championship at Khalifa Stadium did not disappoint. Driving to the stadium it was hard to ignore the mist descending over West Bay. Still, this is Qatar, and sports events DO NOT get affected by bad weather — you would think. The stadium was full. 18

I had an excellent view of Tsonga and Monfils as they entered the court to the roar from the crowd. The atmosphere was vibrant; the VIPs were seated… And the mist kept coming on down. Ten minutes into the match Gael Montfils was having a little trouble controlling his trainers. Hurtling left, right and centre at the ball he soon called time and the game was suspended. The Doha fog had moistened the court, which became a little too slippery for safe play — not exactly rained off, but close! Stadium officials got to work in double-quick time against the forces of nature (it’s amazing what a team of officials can do with a bale of pink towels). 15 minutes later all was resumed. Game, Set and Match! All hail Tsonga. He did his victory dance and didn’t slip over once. Another star graces our shores on Valentine’s Day, in the form of popular British crooner James Blunt, performing at the Intercontinental; although I may need a little help from Cupid to persuade my Valentine to accompany me. In the meantime, hearts and flowers to you all. Until next time…

Being a lady in red oozes style and sexiness, and you can be assured that you will make a statement and turn heads, if you can pull off this bold look. Buy the best quality outfit you can afford, making sure the cut flatters your figure and the shade compliments your skin tone. Wear red lipstick, choosing a shade that matches the colour of your outfit. If you don’t feel comfortable wearing a dress, go for an elegant trouser suit, which will still cause a stir. You can match your red outfit with a sizzling hot bag and heels. If you haven’t got the confidence to go red in full, choose black with red accessories. These two shades make an eye-catching combination.

A Treasure Trove of Secrets
A kaleidoscope of colours, textures and unique designs are the result of one very talented Qatari fashion designer’s immense imagination; all can be discovered at a boutique nestled within the centre of Al Sadd, called Sara’s Secrets.
30
Ohlala! I February 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com
s a 2007 graduate from Virginia Commonwealth University-Qatar, Sara Abdulghany Nasser has established herself as a professional fashion and jewellery designer, by opening her own charmingly named Sara’s Secrets boutique and workshop, where females can browse through a vast collection of one-off fashion, jewellery and accessory designs and also have their own designs custom-made and tailored. Step inside and be mesmerised by an Aladdin’s cave of exclusively designed abayas, daywear, accessories, fabrics and a myriad more. A sparkle here, a feather there; your eyes will fall on something unique. If you don’t find what you’re looking for, Sara will wave her artistic wand and your design will come true. During and since her study at VCU-Q, Sara has participated in several major fashion events in Doha, including the prestigious Fiftieth Anniversary of Paris Haute Couturiers at the Diplomatic Club in 2004. She represented Qatar alongside the work of Dior, Chanel and Nina Ricci. Enormously proud of her Qatari heritage, Sara uses the traditional Arabic abaya shape as inspiration for a large portion of her collections. Her distinctive abayas are lavishly embellished with jewels, beads, braid and countless other forms of vibrant decoration, which undoubtedly appeal to women and girls of all ages. Attention to detail is all important. Sara describes her innovative pieces as, “A cocktail of different cultures and customs past. I don’t like repetition and blind imitation of other designers work.” She uses a wide range of textured fabrics, such as French lace, Shanton silk, Organza and Tulle, which work well for the wide range of outfits she produces. As well as abayas and jalabiyas, Sara adds her own unique personality to her designs of evening and bridal gowns, casual daywear, jeans and elaborately customised T-shirts. Nature has a major influence on Sara’s designs, which stems from her love of gardening and planting flowers. “I adore nature and everything associated with nature,” says Sara. Her adoration of geometric shapes, motifs, prints and patterns; both ancient and modern with Islamic, Turkish, Roman, Spanish, Greek and Moroccan motifs are another source of inspiration that she draws on. In contrast to pure simplicity she prefers to add quirky, unconventional touches. Bright colours are high on the agenda with red, yellow, pink and turquoise making a vivid impact. Her jewellery designs are no less flamboyant; the same can be said for her accessories collection of belts, hats and cushions and bags, which include brightly adorned appliquéd tote bags featuring elements of nature and fun motifs. With the workshop stationed above the boutique, the manufacture of Sara’s collection is all in-house, where her carefully chosen team of tailors produce the designs and are on hand to make up customer’s special requests. In addition to Sara’s exclusive designs, the shop houses a selection of imported items, including a range of lush fabrics from all over the Gulf. For customers who enjoy dabbling in crafts, sewing and design, it’s a thrill to find a plethora of haberdashery, such as braiding and decorative embellishments, plus countless jars of coloured beads and buttons; a delight to browse through resembling candy in a sweet shop! Sara’s love of art stems from her childhood. Her hobbies
include ceramics, mosaics, painting and interior design and when time allows she enjoys learning foreign languages. She considers time to be precious “like a diamond.” Sara’s outlook is positive and she admits to being a natural optimist stating, “Everything is possible. You can make your dreams come true by having strength and passion to achieve all that you desire.”

Art & Culture
Portrait An Artist
With the amount of time and attention spent focusing on Qatar’s cultural heritage, it’s no wonder that Qatar’s arts scene is positively flourishing. Many established artists have contributed their talent and experience over the past decades helping to firmly stamp Qatar’s artistic footprint onto the Global art scene. One such artist is Ismail Azzam who talks to Judith Jones about his art and Qatar.
32
Ohlala! I February 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com
he art of Ismail Azzam needs little explanation. To describe the images he paints of people as ‘realistic’ or ‘life-like’ would by far underestimate their divine and exquisite quality. Ismail was born in Iraq in 1962. When asked if there was a significant moment that triggered his passion for art he replies, “My memory takes me back to a tailor shop that I used to work in, during the year of 1974. I was inspired by an artist who was the son of the owner of that shop.” While growing up, Ismail’s teachers and friends were well aware of his creative and artistic talent. He claims the only career that he had in mind was to become a painter, and so it was little surprise that he would graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, gained at the University of Baghdad. Prior to moving to Qatar, Ismail worked as a Lecturer in Arts at the Institute of Teachers in Mosul, Iraq and then as Director of the Ain Art Gallery in Amman, Jordan. In 1996 he received an invitation from an art corporation in Doha offering him a position to work as a painter. Having worked for the Arab Museum of Modern Art, the National Council of Culture and the Qatar Museum Authority, Ismail has well and truly made his mark on the flourishing arts scene that Qatar is now enjoying. Ismail admits he sees a vast difference in the arts and culture scene nowadays compared to when he first arrived. “A lot of artists have come to Qatar during the fifteen years that I’ve been living here and have provided new approaches in all of the visual art fields. They became well recognised here and have kept on developing their work,” states Ismail. Between 2006 and 2009 Ismail took up the role of Curator in the Orientalist Museum based in the heart of Doha. Dedicated solely to Orientalist art, the museum housed a significant collection of paintings and sculptures by renowned international artists. “I gained a lot from the experience in terms of working with large groups of people creating a team effort. That was a new experience for me because I am usually used to working alone when I paint,” admits Ismail. As well as in the Gulf, Ismail’s art has been showcased internationally including Scotland, England, Oman, U.A.E. Lebanon, Italy, and of course, Iraq and Jordan. He has also displayed work in Qatar’s Fine Art Society’s annual exhibitions and featured in the ibq Artists Series. From where does he draw inspiration? “The deserts and the people inspire me. They lead me to think deeply about my interests when it comes to painting,” says Ismail. “The theme of my work is constantly changing based on my thoughts, the people I meet, the environment and so many other aspects.” When Ismail initially arrived in Qatar there was only one museum. Since then, he says many companies and corporations have come into place, creating wonderful opportunities for people to appreciate Qatar’s culture and heritage. Ismail feels it is easier for burgeoning Arab artists to make their mark
on the art world nowadays than when he began his career. “Communication here has become a lot more advanced through different social networks, making it easier for local artists to discover themselves. This has made them well known and famous,” states Ismail. Although he admits there was never a time when he thought being an artist was too insecure as a career. “What motivated me to carry on was my passion for painting,” he says. Ismail currently works as a painter with Qatar Museum Authority (QMA). He feels that in terms of global impact, Qatar is doing a fine job of developing local inspiration to interact with countries worldwide. “This interaction helps Qatar to make that strong footprint on the art scene globally. QMA stays close to communicating with the people of Qatar, allowing everyone to appreciate the Art and Culture,” claims Ismail. When asked what advice would he offer to young Arab artists who are just setting out? He suggests that they should, “Believe strongly in what they do as artists, and to be serious in their work.” 33

Politics and Style Within the short time since graduating with a Masters Degree in International Politics, Senior Projects Manager at the Office of the President, Qatar Foundation, and owner of the only International Vera Wang Retail Outlet in the Middle East, Maryah Al Dafa is proof that with the right balance of knowledge, drive and determination, success can be achieved at any age.
I
t’s unlikely you’ll hear Maryah Al Dafa describe herself as an Entrepreneur, although it has to be said, her entrepreneurial skills and business acumen are second to none. Her Senior Project Manager’s role within the Qatar Foundation involves education, research, new initiatives and partnerships, and is what you might initially think a total contrast to her responsibilities as Owner of the Vera Wang International store at the Pearl, Qatar. However, Maryah ensures that both ventures complement each other perfectly. She is modest about her achievements and the maturity and wisdom she demonstrates are akin to someone beyond her twenty-six years of age. Her priority is to give something back to the community within the country that she is so ardently patriotic about, and with an active mind bursting with ideas, she has no plans to leave Qatar anytime soon.
“Qatari women have always been achievers, however, a decade ago their achievements were less visible than they are today.” 35
Woman in Power What was your initial ambition when setting out on your career path? M.D. From an early age I’ve had an avid interest in fashion and I always knew that whatever career I chose, it would in some way involve the fashion industry. What qualifications did you gain along the way and where did you study for these? M.D. While growing up I lived overseas. My father was an Ambassador and we lived in such places as Spain and Egypt. I graduated from Georgetown School of Foreign Service in the States and went on later to gain my Masters in International Politics at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London, UK. I returned to Qatar in 2007, where I began working at Qatar Foundation, which was the best option for me. Even whilst studying at University, I became involved with the multi-brand outlet ‘Arabella’ at Royal Plaza where Vera Wang designs were initially in store. Did you face any specific challenges when setting up your own business? M.D. Bureaucracy in Qatar is a major challenge. There are countless opportunities for entrepreneurship in Qatar, however, there is no simple route to setting up a business and the amount of paperwork can be overwhelming. How did your ownership of the Vera Wang store transpire? M.D. My association with Vera Wang began through the Arabella store originally. At that time the brand was not well known to Qatari women, not in the same way as Chanel, Dior and other established designers were. I wanted to bring something special and unique to Doha. The opportunity to open the readyto-wear store arose with the development of the Pearl, whose aim was to provide quality brands all “under one roof ” so to speak, and seemed the ideal location to introduce a fresh new brand. It was certainly a risk on both sides. While Qatar was not established as a go to place for luxury fashion brands, neither was Vera Wang a household name in Doha.
How do you manage your time between business and family without jeopardising one or the other? M.D. My family is extremely supportive of me in all that I do. I’m not yet married and of course being married is only natural, but I don't think I could have achieved everything if I was. When first setting up the store, I spent a great deal of time organising that on a daily basis. Fortunately, now things are stable and there is less pressure these days as the store has become more established. What essentially motivates you? M.D. I need to have at least two or three things going on at once. This is how I function. I have a lot of energy to use on new ideas and a constant urge to be creative. Should a challenge arise then I will step back and think critically as to how I’m going to deal with it. I’m not defeatist and I’m driven towards opportunity, achieving self satisfaction and peace of mind. What advice would you give to women who may want to follow a similar career path as you? What initial steps should they take? M.D Discover what it is you love to do and seek self satisfaction when choosing a career. Labelling yourself as an ‘entrepreneur’ is not enough. There has to be something to back this up. It’s not all about making a profit. Every opportunity is open to you, so don’t just follow everyone else and don’t let anyone get you down! Know your market and know the kind of risks you are dealing with. You need to contribute 120 percent effort. Success will not just come to you; you have to go get it.
“Discover what it is you love to do and seek self satisfaction when choosing a career. Every opportunity is open to you.”
Your achievements place you as a role model for other women to achieve their goals; do you feel pressurised by this in any way? M.D. I’m not sure I see myself as a role model, although if what I’m doing encourages others to take the initiative to pursue their goals then I’m pleased. I am very approachable and I spend a lot of time talking to others; I’m happy to do that and offer advice if I’m asked. What are the main differences regarding the high profile roles women play in Qatari society and business nowadays compared to a decade ago? M.D. Qatari women have always been achievers, however, a decade ago their achievements were less visible than they are today. Social media for one thing has changed that. I think Qatari women have always had something to prove and are very motivated. This is in contrast to the belief that Qataris in general are apathetic. 36
Ohlala! I February 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com
What personal qualities do you feel you possess which have contributed to your success? M.D I’m very practical and have been taught to think critically in any given situation. I’d much rather be pro-active than reactive. I’m always looking outside of the box. I tend not to rush into things, instead I have a pros and cons list for everything. What are your future goals and aspirations and how do you plan to accomplish these? M.D. I plan to study for my PhD in International Politics. Working with the Qatar Foundation is extremely important to me and I want to continue to play a role within the community. Contributing to society and to charity are ultimate factors. With the Vera Wang store, it’s not just about selling clothes, rather it’s about giving something back to my country. When not working, how do you switch off ? M.D. My mind is constantly on turbo! I find it difficult to relax and allow myself very little downtime as I’m always thinking about things I need and want to do. Although I am quite partial to watching an episode of CSI on television now and again! Is there a particular motto that you live by which inspires you? M.D. We all have a responsibility towards our country and should add something to society in a positive way.

Year of The Wolf
Nerina Pallot remains one of the most talented and also most underrated artists currently writing and performing today. Ben Whittaker met up with the singer/songwriter to discuss her latest album release, Year of The Wolf.
39
Celebrity Scoop
ast time I spoke to Nerina Pallot she was preparing for the launch of her third album and full of positive notes surrounding her recent marriage to husband, Andy Chatterley. Two years later and with her latest release, Year of the Wolf, a lot has changed for this Ivor Novello and Brit Award nominated artist, with one episode in September 2010 proving to be what she says is the most significant development in her life. “I have a child. A baby boy named Wolfgang!” The title of the album becomes immediately apparent. “He was born in September 2010 and this album was really inspired by him. I was pregnant as I was writing it and I just about finished it before going into labour.” So was there significance to the name? “Andy and I were sat watching the movie Amadeus about the life of Mozart, who is one of my favourite classical composers — the day we found out I was pregnant and decided on Wolfgang Amadeus there and then. “Eighteen months on and I never envisioned how much your life changes — not just from the moment you realise you’re pregnant — but right up to the birth itself and beyond. It’s an instantaneous transition from being responsible for just you, to being suddenly responsible for another life and knowing that from thereon in it will always be the case. “I got used to him being inside me and as he grew, so did the substance of my album. It was almost as if they developed together! “I certainly noticed my voice change over the term of the pregnancy. A few weeks after he was born I returned to the studio and suddenly realised that a little more power had returned to my voice. “It also changed the way I thought about and wrote my songs and there are several tracks such as History Boys and If I Lost You Now accurately reflect this. Having a child makes it very difficult to leave him. I’ve only spent one night away from Wolfie since he was born, and all I kept thinking about was getting back home to him. It makes one of the key components of my career — doing concerts
and gigs — a little harder.” Does that mean she is thinking about scaling down her output? “Quite the opposite. Wolfie has given me fresh impetus and a new sense of direction that I have never known before. I feel that now I have more of a reason than ever to focus on my future.” Produced by Bernard Butler — formerly of Suede — Year of the Wolf has a much more defined and edgy style to it when compared to the out and out pop feel of The Graduate but is filled with some instantly accessible tunes, especially the first single Put Your Hands Up and Turn Me On Again. Turn Me On Again is all about the courtship; the early stages of the chase. In many ways that’s the best part of the whole dating experience. I always seem to find time to write about the intimate side of things,” she reflects with a mischievous smile. Nerina also enjoys a successful career as a writer for other artists and her most recent collaboration with Kylie Minogue on her album Aphrodite, where she co wrote the title track, is just the latest in a series of works that she hopes to continue. It is at this point that she also confesses to an ambition that she would like to envisage before she hangs up her guitar, stating, “I would love to write a piano concerto before I make my halfcentury, although I don’t think that is likely to happen any time soon. Still, it’s something to aim for if I ever decide to take a step back from the pop world.” With four albums and over a decade in the limelight, she could be considered a veteran in many circles, so I pressed her on her thoughts over how she saw the industry developing. “There are still a great number of hugely talented young artists out there and I think that will always be the case, with a select group of megastars still jostling for the top spots. However, I think making a long term career is going to be more difficult.” With Year of The Wolf, Nerina Pallot has produced possibly her most accomplished album to date and Bernard Butler’s influence on the production is clearly evident, as she tells me, “Bernard lives close by and he helped return that element of rock to my music that was perhaps missing on The Graduate. I couldn’t be happier with the outcome.” Nerina’s latest single, All Bets Are Off is out on iTunes now and you can catch a look at her new video on her website.
“I never envisioned how much your life changes — not just from the moment you realise you’re pregnant — but right up to the birth itself and beyond.”

STEP 1
Four steps to glamour
To seal the colour and prevent feathering use a thin brush to apply a little concealer or powder around the edge of your lips to make them ‘pop’.
Use a lip liner as the base, applying outwards to cover your lips.
Keeping within the lines of your base, apply your favourite red lipstick with a lip brush. Blot the excess with a tissue and reapply.
Colour Me Beautiful Choosing the right shade for your skin tone is essential to being able to work this look. If your skin undertones are cool, pick cooler shades of red. If you have warmer undertones, pick reds with warm undertones.
Fair Skin: Pick a classic red shade without hints of pink.
Medium Skin: Choose a darker red to match the undertones of your skin colour.
Dark Skin: Red shades with hints of orange are perfect for your skin tone. 65
Beauty
Prepare your skin by using a perfecting base after moisturising and under foundation for a perfect complexion and a natural glow.
The Crimson Pout Although Angelina Jolie is a natural beauty, this stunning makeup look certainly adds to her star appeal. Take a tip from Angelina and wear eye-catching red lipstick, while keeping the rest of your makeup simple but elegant with neutral shades.

o doubt stepping into a glorious pair of louboutins, Manolos and Choos gives us an instant feel good factor. We look and feel fabulous! However, could it be possible that while our high heels are a marvellous contribution to our wardrobe, they are in fact a catastrophe for body biomechanics? C.B. It’s a problem that many of my clients suffer from. In my experience more often than not women suffer from sore knees due to the design of their pelvis. Basically, women have a wider pelvis than men to allow for an easier birthing process. This can place more stress down the outside of the thigh, and lead to tightness and pain at the knee when it moves. The correct name for this condition is ‘Patellofemoral Syndrome’ (PFS) but it’s not as serious as it sounds. Wearing high heels causes an even bigger tilt to the pelvis as well as a forward shift in the centre of gravity, which places the knees under more stress. Realistically, it’s unlikely most women will stop wearing high heels. Therefore, the focus should be maintaining a proper balance of the muscles in the legs to ensure that they are strong enough to support everyday activities, such as picking up small children and walking around in a pair of four-inch heels. The kneecap must follow a particular path when we move; if it deviates from this path it causes pain. Sitting down, bending down to pick something up, walking up or down stairs are common causes of pain.
Unless something is structurally wrong with the knee, it could be a simple case of loosening off the outside of the thigh through Massage or Self Myofascial Release (foam rolling). Although initially quite tender, this should ease with practice. Another important factor in correcting this imbalance is static stretching, which should be held for 20 to 30 seconds. Consistency is key. Attempt to work through any initial discomfort and as the tightness decreases so will the pain. This can be done with a progressive exercise programme that is easy and comfortable. Follow on by working on your inner Quad (front thigh) muscle. Example: Sit on the floor legs out in front of you. Place your first two fingers on your VMO (above and to the inside of your knee cap). Tighten quad muscles and imagine pulling your knee cap upward towards your hip. Hold the contraction for up to 10 seconds and make sure you feel VMO working (aim to contract that muscle first). It’s important to keep the muscle switched on and working to prevent the knee cap from moving all around. Focus on breathing and remind yourself “This will get better.” For a step-by-step guide visit http://TheInjuredKnee.com, a four part series called “Cure Your Knee Pain in Less Than a Week”, which offers details about this condition and a step-bystep guide on how to alleviate the problem. Taking advice from a qualified professional, such as a physiotherapist, will help guide you towards recovery. You should stop if your knee starts to feel worse and contact your specialist for advice and to discuss future treatment. “Although Chi’Zen is a newbie on Doha’s dining block, it already feels well established with no shortage of guests.” ntering Chi’Zen offers an immediate Oriental impact. The spacious layout with vivid red and black interiors presents a contemporary face to traditional aspects of the Far East. Dainty red chandeliers provide overhead lighting enhanced by ceiling spotlights. Chinese inspired symbols and artefacts are displayed throughout; black oriental screens divide sections of the indoor dining area while outdoors an attractive fountain is the focal point of the terrace and serves to create a tranquil space for temperature-friendly dining. At the stylish bar and lounge park yourself on a bar stool or slouch on a comfy sofa and indulge in some of the countless beverages on offer. Lounge music fills the air at a pleasing level and allows for easy conversation. The hospitable staff wear traditional dress further adding to the essence of Chi’Zen’s authentic Chinese concept. Azeem Khan, the newly appointed Restaurant Manager is welcoming and gracious, making every effort to ensure that your evening is thoroughly enjoyable. Chi’Zen offers a relaxed at ease atmosphere; where couples can cosy up on tables for two, while group diners can enjoy a special occasion, which staff will help you celebrate if you wish. A separate dining area is available for guests who want more privacy. Although Chi’Zen is a newbie on Doha’s dining block, it already feels well established with no shortage of guests. With an open kitchen Chi’Zen’s culinary team is on display if your curiosity entices you, however the kitchen is well placed at a corner of the room and doesn’t invade the dining space, although pleasing aromas are allowed to escape and tease us. The extensive drinks menu will have you leafing through its pages while you nibble on complimentary savoury prawn crackers. Settle on a Lemon Gingertini cocktail and savour the exotic flavour of ginger and citrus with a subtle martini kick. It’s what ginger beer was made for but be prepared to want more than one! There is also a wealth of virgin cocktails, a varied wine list and a range of Chinese teas to quench your thirst. Chinese favourites with a contemporary twist are created by the culinary team who pride themselves on dishing up only fresh, natural flavours completely void of the dreaded MSG (monosodium glutamate) allowing you to delve into delicious dishes to your heart’s content. 71

“Chinese favourites with a contemporary twist are created by the culinary team who pride themselves on dishing up only fresh, natural flavours.”
Chi’Zen goes a step further with the traditional Bird’s Nest Soup by offering a trio of ‘nest’ soups to give your palate an introduction. Or choose an alternative from the interesting range of flavourful soup dishes. Dim Sum, a dish difficult to perfect, is noticeably tasteful at at Chi’Zen; the steamed basket of Shu Mai oozes ‘melt in the mouth’ flavour and you’ll begrudge having to share it. Beware of the tasty Calamari Salt and Pepper appetiser with a combo of fried squid, garlic, five spice powder and fresh chopped chillies; it bites! The Soy Marinated Duck appetiser is superb and a large enough portion to choose as a main with slices of lean duck lounging in a rich, herbs and soy vinegar gravy. Main courses offer staple favourites plus several unique dishes to please vegetarians and meat eaters. A particular classic, which Chi’Zen takes pride in serving, is Peking Duck. Choose a whole or half duck, well seasoned for hours beforehand and displayed to you on a side table. Sanjeeva, a helpful and attentive waiter, proceeds with the brief ritual of preparing pancake parcels of cucumber, onion, duck and hoi sin sauce to be eaten in double-quick time. The Seafood Claypot is an ocean medley of scallops, shrimps, fish and calamari basking in a light oyster sauce. In contrast Beef XO is strips of stir-fried beef tenderloin, sweet peas and XO sauce (made from Chinese wine) which presents a rich yet unfamiliar flavour, with one portion offering plenty to share. If noodles are your weakness you’ll be satisfied with the variety, and opting for the filling chicken or beef Chow Mee will not disappoint. In place of the usual sorbet palate cleanser Chi’Zen’s complimentary shot of refreshing rosewater and lemon leaves your palate eager for dessert. Lychee Cheesecake is pleasure on a plate; fresh lychees whipped into the creamiest cheesecake topping accompanied by a drizzle of blueberry juice and a fresh strawberry. Otherwise warm Chocolate Brownie with sweet caramelised banana will leave you licking your lips. This is the Zen factor and culinary Chef Allan has done us proud.

A subject of countless paintings, films, literature and scandal; it’s a challenge for anyone not to submerge themselves into the magical ambience that surrounds one of the world’s most romantic, artistic and theatrical destinations. No surprise then that water travel is the main mode of transport. Arrive at Marco Polo Airport on the mainland and a shuttle bus will take you to the Alilaguna water-bus jetty where you choose which route to travel to San Marco, the hub of popular Venetian attractions. With a labyrinth of charming alleyways intertwining with canals, walking from one treasured attraction to the next is a pleasant way to appreciate the wealth of Venetian art and rich architecture. Souvenir shops laden with carnival masks, ornaments created from renowned Murano glass, designer outlets and unique boutiques, you’ll discover along the way. February is carnival season so combine your Valentine celebration with flamboyant, masquerade festivities, which include gala dinners, grand balls and theatrical events. Dress up and party whilst savouring Carnival atmosphere as you snuggle up on a scenic gondola ride along the Grand Canal.
A plethora of unique restaurants nestle within cobbled walkways where an intimate candlelit supper will enhance your Valentine’s theme. If palaces, galleries and museums delight your senses there are countless. The impressive Doge’s Palace, the Bridge of Sighs and the Basilica San Marco perfectly symbolise Venetian culture. There you can toast Venice, St Valentine, carnival and romance. Although an expensive destination to visit, accommodation is available to suit all budgets. www.venice-carnival-italy.com 77

A cocktail of sundrenched sandy beaches, sparkling turquoise waters and tranquil palm tree hideaways is what you’ll be awarded if you hot foot it to the ultimate desert island paradise, the Maldives. Set in the heart of the equatorial Indian ocean this archipelago of coral reefs is the setting for an unforgettable romantic retreat for lovers who ‘want to be alone’ basking amidst natural beauty and incredible picture-postcard scenery. Having arrived by speedboat or seaplane, which is the only mode of transport connecting these lush inhabited and uninhabited isles, you’ll endure little effort to enjoy the stunning backdrop of the best that Mother Nature can offer whatever month of the year you visit, as the climate is visitor friendly all year round. The aquatic life is second to none with a breathtaking underwater landscape boasting high visibility of the myriad fish species and underwater creatures where divers and snorkelers will find true paradise. Sweep your Valentine away to one of the many uninhabited desert islands and savour the solitude and the scenery. The appropriately heart shaped Addu Atoll lies in the southernmost area of the country; central Malé the ‘capital’ promotes the modern face of the Maldives, while the Southern Atolls is an up and coming, pristine and less commercial area, which nevertheless boasts three regional airports with links to Malé. Accommodation ranges across high brand resorts, boutique abodes, guesthouses and ecologically sound hotels. Vacationing in the Maldives is expensive, so be prepared to splash out in more ways than just frolicking in the lagoons. However, while you romance beneath a holhuashi (an island gazebo) you’ll no doubt treasure the experience as priceless. www.visitmaldives.com 78

Prime tourist attractions are found downtown at Plaza de Mayo in the heart of Buenos Aires and feature iconic landmarks. Enjoy Puerto Madero’s waterfront views and open boulevards plus a wealth of cuisine. Steal a romantic moment on the Puente del Mujer (Woman’s Bridge). Ordinarily, a cemetery is an unlikely spot for a romantic stroll and a photo opportunity, nevertheless the Cementerio de Recoleta is popular with tourists who saunter along this famous burial ground to view impressive statues and tombstones of the elite and famous including the grave of ‘Evita’ Peron. Alive and kicking is the vibrant cultural heritage, which Buenos Aires showers upon its visitors. A metropolis for shopping, activities and nightlife is all very well, but Tango (also known as the three minute love affair) takes priority. Tango shows are in abundance across the city; alternatively seek out an authentic Milonga (a place or event where Tango is danced) and learn the art of lustful dancing from the locals. Buenos Aires has a range of accommodation to suit all Valentine budgets and is easily accessible via Ezeiza International airport. www.bue.gov.ar.com Travel Tips Check visa requirements; a valid entry and stay visa may be required by foreign citizens. Buy comprehensive travel/medical insurance before departing for your holiday. Certain areas of the Maldives are alcohol-free plus some resorts are adult-only. Check electricity voltage; take an adaptor and transformer for appliances. Drink only bottled water not tap water. Currencies: Venice – Euro (€). Maldives –Rufiyaa (MRF). Cherry Princess Treat yourself on St Valentine’s Day to something sweet-smelling and divine from L’Occitane’s Limited Edition collection: Cherry Princess. A fruity floral scent inspired by Hortense de Beauharnais, the daughter of Empress Josephine. She was famous for her porcelain complexion and would blush in response to any compliment. As a tribute to her touching beauty, the name of this delicate French Princess was given to one of the most graceful cherry trees. When its pure white petals give way to fruits, the branches of this cherry tree reveal rare red pearls that are crisp and juicy. They shine with a natural, beautiful glow — like the glow that once lit up the charming face of the princess…

Horoscope
February Happy Birthday Ms Aquarius February will see you feeling at the peak of good spirits as this month (which is traditionally the month of Aquarius) opens a whole host of emotional possibilities. An admirer seeking to attain more than just friendship is waiting in the shadows and may simply be biding their time before the decisive move. You need to think about how you might deal with the situation when matters come to a head. Towards the end of the month you may take a short break away — possibly just to think matters over or simply only for a deserved rest — and during this time you are likely to uncover a surprising secret, which you will find difficult to deal with at first.
January 20 – February 18
Aquarius — at a glance Aquarians are extremely open-minded, humanitarian, tolerant, extroverted and experimental. They are also artistic, independent and eccentric; full of brilliant ideas. On the negative side they can be emotionally detached, rebellious and rather unpredictable.

February means a change in romantic interests for you. There is a good chance that any existing relationship that has been struggling to continue will finally buckle under the strain, and it may very well see the situation end in tears. Although this event will be painful to come to terms with, the initial loss will give way to a renewed sense of determination to set your life back on track. Additionally, if you have been contemplating greener fields and different pastures then an unexpected opportunity to break free of your restrictions once and for all could present itself around the 15. Don’t be afraid to follow your instincts since they could well lead you to greater things.
ARIES (March 20 – April 19)
It’s the month of love, so it is no surprise that you have relationships on your mind this February. For some of you this could be painful as it could bring home the reality of a recent breakup. However, an offer to dinner with an admirer may provide you with a welcome boost, but beware of misleading a friend into believing you want something more. Your vulnerable state could leave you open as prey to some unscrupulous individuals, so be sure of people’s intentions ahead of any decision. On matters financial, you will receive a welcome boost this month that will set your mind to rest and allow you to focus on other more creative pursuits.
GEMINI (May 21 – June 20)
Beware this month of allowing your ego to get the better of you and perhaps even causing a major rift in a relationship. You may have good reason to feel proud of yourself because of a good decision at work, but don’t blow your own trumpet too hard as the sound may not suit everyone’s ears. If you have been concerned over the direction in which a relationship happens to be moving, take the time to sit down with your partner and talk the matter through. Hiding the problems is not going to make them go away. If you want this Valentine’s Day to be a good one then deal with the outstanding issues now rather than later.
LEO (July 23 – August 22)
The seeds of financial success are yours to plant in February with rich rewards set to come in the middle part of the year. A young child is proving particularly loving and may lead you to reflect on your good fortune where family members are concerned. A surprise piece of good news will reach you around the 17. Concerning a matter which has proven to be a particular worry over recent months. It is the starting point for a consolidation of your efforts to achieve the goals that you seek to attain. You may feel slightly low over a sick relative or friend around the 6 and any support you can give will be warmly appreciated.
LIBRA (September 23 – October 22)
Relationships are at the top of your agenda in February — both romantically and where certain relatives are involved — as you try to juggle two discontented individuals’ needs. Perhaps the answer is to stop trying to please everyone and instead forcing those concerned to put up or shut up! The influence of Venus on your sign may point towards you being a little more careful where health is concerned and it could be that illness plays a major factor in why there is so much friction flying about you presently. A gift given out of unrequited love could also cause a dispute around February third, so if you don’t want certain people to know — keep the secret to yourself.
Sagittarius (Nov 22 – Dec 21)
Sacrifice is a big feature of your reading this month. However, the sacrifice does not come from you, but a partner whose generous spirit opens the way for you to take advantage of a situation you would have otherwise never been able to consider. Don’t be too quick to forget what has been done for you here as not many would have done the same in similar circumstances. The best way to show your appreciation would be to perhaps be a little more affectionate and loving than usual. On the work front, you might find yourself involved in a minor accident as a practical joke backfires and you end up nursing a bruised ankle. Watch your step on February 21.
TAURUS (April 20 – May 20)
Love is never far from the mind of most Taureans and that isn’t surprising when one considers Venus has such an influence on your sign. This Valentine’s Day is likely to offer up a mixed bag of emotional results, depending on whether you are already in a longstanding relationship or on the cusp of something new. Things are likely to work better for those in more established partnerships, so if you are embarking on something new then just take it slowly. Work wise you could be offered a new position completely out of the blue and you should give it some serious consideration because there is great potential if you are ready to embrace the challenge.
CANCER (June 21 – July 22)
For the last few weeks you may have been feeling under the weather and the strain of family matters may be wearing heavily upon you. You need to reassess your role and ignore the guilt others are trying to impress upon you. If the need arises, a break away from your environment — even for a few days — will do you a great deal of good. Take time out with a partner or loved one just to refresh your perspective and put a little investment in the things that really count. Matters financial will see you applying for a loan, perhaps to purchase a new car, but shop around because the first thing you come across will not be the one to go for.

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)
Yours is a passionate and very physical sign and as such, you are usually very affected by this time of the year, with Valentine’s Day being something you generally enjoy celebrating. However, this year it could be a case of mixed results in the romance stakes, due to the fact that other issues have come to the fore that have diverted your attention a little. Chiefly health matters could prove to be more prominent and it may mean a few of you could even be looking at a brief stay in hospital. It’s nothing serious but it just might mean you will need to put the relationship celebrations on hold for a few weeks. Anyone for Valentine’s Day in March?!
Capricorn (Dec 22 – January 19)
There is a face in the crowd that has an interested eye on certain Capricorn’s out there and it could point towards relationships and a major change in how your love life may develop in 2012. Of primary importance are your own character and the need for you to assert your authority on the situations that exist around you. At the moment there is a degree of hesitation and insecurity about you — both flaws that you should seek to eradicate from your make-up if you stand any hope of making a success of matters emotional this year. On other matters, the signs are good for an interview on February fifth, so think positive, believe in yourself and that new job could be yours.

ahlings. I greet you from Los Angeles. Home of Hollywood. Lights. Celebrities. E! Entertainment. And dogs. So many dogs. My previous visits were manically brief, two days here, three days there. Never got the chance to really "be" in LA. Until now. Ten days in, and I can safely say there's something quite eerie about this place. I know. Sounds crazy compared to the giant glamazon so forcibly projected across our TV screens. Those who regularly read this column already know, I'm not one to deliver the expected. So here's a more realistic breakdown: People seem to be closer to furry creatures, than other people. There's a lot of unjustified anxiety. Loneliness. Mistrust. Morbid material obsession. Far too many failed relationships and or single folk. A strange sense of misdirection. Talent everywhere, so many of them, so lost. Caught up in dreams that have morphed into nightmares. A Hollywood haven clearly run by few, while everyone else is trying to "make it". With that, comes a lot of sad stories. Especially from waiters — when all you want to do is order some food — which can irritate, a little bit. First class crackheads stood outside of 5-star hotels. Homeless people, sleeping on these star-studded boulevards. That's the majority perspective for you. For the few and fortunate among us, there are some fabulous shopping options. Not as eclectic as London, but cool all the same. I'm staying in West Hollywood, and Fairfax, Melrose and Robertson are all your best bets for scouring. Another plus in La La Land is the ample space available for really quite scenic walking. Spa services at your indulgence, and just a general lean toward a healthier way of life. The weather's disobediently cold at the moment — so unlike the "sunny LA" sell. I thank God for Q14, and the life-saving, stunning and super convenient bisht I've been wearing for both comfort and "please keep me warm" purposes. The custom made robe/jacket/abaya/ as you wish to call it, has been a bit of a show-stopper, with many asking where, what and how. Its vibrant tribal prints, arabesque flair and impressive detailing hails from Kuwait. Since style seems to be some kind of inborn gift over there, that comes as no surprise. Restaurant culture plays a massive role in LA lifestyle, which makes obvious sense considering nightlife comes to a strict two-am ending. Unfortunately though, the food is not that great. If you're a fan of flavour (you know, actually seasoning what you eat) then do as I did and stick to Katsuya, Koi, Phillipe Chow and a Thai local in West Hollywood which has the best peanut sauce I believe I've ever had. Forget the name. Tweet @iambougi if you really want to know. For the vegan types (not that I'm a vegetarian, but I do defer from meat when possible),

there's Veggie Grill, and Real Food Daily. Both cheap, "Bday cheerful and wholesome. Onto what you're already very familiar with (drums please)... the glamour. Yes honeys. There's been plenty of that too. On arriving it was straight to Beverly Hills' Montage hotel for the Cinema For Peace event in honour of Sean "Actin g for p Penn's work in Haiti. eace: B ougi's Mohammed Al Turki, pretty Rozan Ah med a woma Saudi film producer, passionate nd a v n." er y philanthropist and Hollywood newcomer was co-chair of the beautiful gala, which saw guests such as Julia Roberts, George Clooney, Demi Moore, and Kim Kardashian join us to raise over five million dollars for the people of Haiti. Thumbs up, all round. Then there was the Golden Globes. Personally, I was over the moon over fellow Brit, Idris Elba's win. He's handsome, wouldn't you agree? After parties were all over Hollywood. Preferring a quieter gathering, we went to Bar Marmont, followed by LA's Soho house, which by the way, looks exactly like pped" oni, cu London's! I mean, down to the reception "Miss couch. EXACTLY the same. A few days later saw Sundance. I didn't go (snow and I hate each other) but Monsieur Mohammed's latest project, Arbitrage, received raving reviews internationally (yeaaas) — which subsequently led to a ton of celebrations both in Utah and back in LA. Indeed, hard work does pay off. Oh and by the way, the movie stars Richard Gere. I think that says enough. More celebrations came in the form of birthdays too, with the formidable female force that is Estelle, and a series of wonderfully intimate soirees. We liked. Be sure to pick up her highly "Roz anticipated new LP, All of Me. In Londo an Ahmed & Van n's M stores on February 28, 2012. We TV S taying essa Amad also like.
