bsolutely blooming fabulous! A glorious kaleidoscope of flowers appears all over town. Spring has truly sprung it seems. Look around and see a hot bed of colourful blooms lighting up roadsides, making driving in the nasty Doha traffic far more cheerful. Great job gardeners! We thank you. A month of food, music, fashion and… eh cats. Plus, I gained a certificate from the (I can’t wait I’m so excited) soon to be opened St Regis hotel where I was treated to an afternoon of bespoke butler service training, a peek into the highly skilled profession that I previously knew nothing about, courtesy of the St Regis’ team of professional butlers who certainly know how to treat a guest. I’ll have you know I’m practically an expert (I exaggerate!) in packing a dishdasha now — give or take a few creases. Afterwards we were treated to the most delicious afternoon tea, which I highly recommend you try the minute St Regis opens its doors. Talking of five-star hotels, the aromas of fivestar food wafted around the grounds of Doha Exhibition Centre four flavourful days running during the food festival last month. It wasn’t just the big daddy hotels that created culinary delights; all kinds of Doha dining venues cooked up a cornucopia of scrumptious cuisine and what can I say? Mmm, Mmm. Certainly not a time for calorie counting. It’s true, Doha has become a hub for celeb’s to pop in left, right and centre and perform for us. Valentine’s night was no exception as James Blunt strutted his stuff on the beach at the InterContinental. I was positioned only a few bodies back from the stage, and was surprised when the pop star hurled himself into the crowd and rolled himself across people’s heads, ending up but a few centimetres in front of me. I suddenly found myself tugging at the neck of his T-shirt — why? I can’t be sure, but fortunately, I saw sense to let go before stretching it out of all proportion. He’ll possibly think twice about doing that on the next leg of his tour. Two nights later in contrast to kicking up the sand at Mr Blunt’s bash, I sat in the audience

at MIA Park enjoying the everso-calming performance of Cat Stevens, a.k.a. Yusuf Islam. Fifty years after his heyday in the 60s, his voice is just as soothing and fabulous. I’m pleased to say I stayed firmly ‘Allow Me’ B utlers in my seat, no tugging of T-shirts, at St Regis just a gentle swaying to Cat’s cooing of Moonshadow. Talking of Cats. Check out Cats in Qatar’s open day on March 3 (see Happenings and The Cause article). Go on, cuddle a pussycat. To top off an eventful month I attended a fabulous affair at Al Shaheen, Sheraton. The restaurant has been around for decades but still boasts a large Food on & dose of sparkle. Especially when Fashi l a r u Cult WOHOM (Wives of Ambassadors OM — WOH and Heads of Mission) takes it over for a cultural fashion show and food festival. We’re talking ladies who really know how to dress for lunch! Diplomats’ wives sashayed down a red carpet runway in sensational national costumes to the sounds of each country’s traditional beat. Move over supermodels! We later indulged in worldwide regional cuisine James Blunt kindly supplied by the ladies Live! themselves. Thanks go out to Bozena Rostek, wife of the Polish Ambassador and President of WOHOM, who created this unique event. Wearing her own traditional costume she deserved to take a bow. As this is my final month as Deputy Editor of Ohlala! I wish all you lovely readers the very best of everything as I head out in search of a new adventure! Signing off… X ve! Cat li Cool

The black suede pumps with a white chalk residue are not right for this look; instead opt for elegant black heels. levigne Poppy De

Art & Culture

“Yes I am a feminist. Feminism has yet to come out in full force in the Middle East.”

Capturing Change

In a country where taking a camera onto the streets may be seen as intrusive to some, one might wonder what motivates an inhabitant of that country to become a photographic artist. Saudi born Manal Al Dowayan is a woman whose passion and talent to create art far outweighs any restrictions that she might encounter. The launch of the new Katara Gallery at Doha’s Cultural Village showcases an exhibition of her striking black and white images depicting emotional and visual concepts of women, cities and landscapes.

40

Ohlala! I March 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

etite, with a vibrant personality and strong character, internationally renowned photographic artist, Manal Al Dowayan admits she has been, “Playing around with cameras from an early age.” Born and raised in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern province, Manal tells how her family have always been keen to document memories. “My mother has boxes and boxes of photographs,” admits Manal whose creative ambition led her to study at art institutions in Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Bahrain and London. 2009 and 2010 saw Manal as a resident artist at the Delfina Foundation in London and at Cuadro Fine Art Gallery in Dubai respectively. Whilst in London studying for a Master’s Degree, which just so happened to be in Printing, Manal showcased some of her work in a student exhibition whereby she was approached to exhibit her work in Spain. A while later, upon her return to Saudi Arabia, she was called upon by the British Council and invited to collaborate with them on a project where she is currently part of their International Cultural Leaders program. Saudi Arabia, Europe, Turkey, UK, USA and UAE are all countries that have welcomed the talent of Manal Al Dowayan. Her artwork has permanent homes at the British Museum, Jordan National Museum of Fine Art, the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage, the Nadour Foundation in Germany, and the Barjeel Foundation in Sharjah; an impressive portfolio of art institutions. Manal’s artwork has been inspired by many issues. Although it involves concerns that many women face, and in particular Saudi women, Manal is keen to point out that first and foremost her art is a platform on which to represent herself and her own personal issues. “Family, friends and Saudi women have all been extremely encouraging. Also the press and media in Saudi Arabia have been very supportive and I have so far never experienced censorship of my work,” confirms Al Dowayan. Her current exhibition at Katara includes, And We Had No Shared Dreams, a series depicting the city as a theatrical backdrop conversing with its inhabitants; Landscapes Of The Mind, an intensely visual concept where the artist reflects upon herself as a person, a representative of a society amid the bleak landscapes of her surroundings; and a collection of images, I AM, inspired by the history of Arab women, who for centuries were traditionally the wage earners within their families. This collection of black and white portraits features a variety of Saudi women representing their professions, such as I am a computer scientist, I am a United Nations Officer, I am an interior designer, I am a mother. A three-metre high prayer beads installation (of which there are three) entitled, Esmi (my name) displays the names of many Saudi women; it represents a journey concerning the ‘taboo’ of Saudi men who will not mention a woman by name in front of another man. Manal admits that she has experienced no obstacles within her country when it comes to her freedom of expression (although nobody is permitted to wander Saudi streets taking photographs

“I’m a hopeful person; there is one guarantee in life and that is, things will always change.”

at leisure) and also no shortage of female volunteers who wish to pose and contribute to her artworks. “I am inspired by life’s challenges. I embrace challenges,” says Manal, who when asked, “Are you a feminist?” declares without hesitation, “Yes I am a feminist. In the West the word ‘feminist’ sometimes denotes negative connotations; however, feminism has yet to come out in full force in the Middle East.” What about other passions? Manal‘s life revolves around her passion for art and she enjoys visiting exhibitions of her artist friends. “I love to educate,” she explains. “Especially younger people; I enjoy interacting with them and I always endeavour to participate in my exhibitions by telling people what my artwork signifies. I want to be a voice in the Gulf. I feel the Gulf needs more role models.” In reply to what she would like to say to other women Manal states, “I’m a hopeful person. There is one guarantee in life and that is, things will always change. There will always be change.” 41

f only there was enough page space to feature every one of the inspirational women, of which there are countless, that live, work and contribute to Qatar’s community. For these women it’s clear that the words “I can’t” and “Impossible” are not part of their vocabulary, and in honour of all females worldwide, they prove that by making your own choices you can achieve your own personal goals. Set your sights as high as you want, because everything is possible.

Dr Amal Mohammed Al Malki

Aisha Al Khater

AISHA AL KHATER As Director of the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) Aisha Al Khater’s goal is to help make the MIA become the finest Museum of Islamic Art in the world. The passion and respect she shows towards her Qatari heritage, coupled with her motivation and drive to achieve all that she can, there is every reason to believe she will succeed. After graduating from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music in the UK, Aisha returned to Qatar and for several years taught music at a private school and at the Qatar Academy. In 2007 an opportunity arose for Aisha to work in the events department of MIA prior to its opening; it soon became apparent that she wanted to work with the artifacts and so studied for a Postgraduate Diploma in Islamic Art. Working alongside the founding Director, Dr Sabiha Al Khemir, Aisha helped to set up the galleries. She took maternity leave and returned to work in 2009 soon after the MIA opening. In 2011 she was offered the post of Director; a rapid rise in responsibility to a high profile position where curatorial decision making is high on the agenda. Another priority is to involve schools in educational programs in order to promote Qatar’s heritage. Aisha feels women play a prominent role these days and are a strong presence in Qatar’s workforce. She encourages women to pursue whatever it is they love to do and admits nothing comes easy; hard work is essential.

“Qatar is empowering me to manage one of the most important Islamic Art museums in the World, and for that I am really honoured.”

DR AMAL MOHAMMED AL MALKI Dr Amal Al Malki initially set out with no great career plan to follow; yet she is currently the only Qatari Professor at Education City, where she works as Assistant Teaching Professor of English at Carnegie Mellon University. Undoubtedly, she is pioneering the way for future Qatari academics to play a key role in contributing to and promoting the development of Qatar’s youth. Her role as educator and mentor is greatly complimented by her passion for creative writing, and as a self-confessed, non-conformist and free thinker she believes that the voice of reason and cultural tolerance can prevail beyond the ‘clash of civilisation’. Dr Amal’s role was not gained without challenge. Campus rules required her to prove that she was capable of ‘fitting in’ with the scope of work. This she did by moving to the University’s overseas campus, adapting to unfamiliar surroundings and allowing her determination to conquer her concerns. Dr Amal’s outlook for future Qatari professors and women in general is positive. Alongside her education work, she has written several publications. Her latest, Arab Women in Arab News: Old Stereotypes and New Media, exposes the persistent stereotypes about Arab women and tries to set the record straight.

“While “feminism” is a controversial word both in the East and the West, research suggests that women who behave collectively to pursue a better future for themselves and their daughters create the optimal condition for rising together in a world of men under assumptions of equality. Whether this inclination towards collective behaviour is called feminism or not makes no difference to its effectiveness as a strategy. Females must be united to create the critical mass needed to remedy the blind spots of males and their patriarchal filters.” 43

Women in Power CAROLIN ZEITLER In her own words, Carolin Zeitler inspires, encourages and empowers people — especially women — to make a difference. She has combined her experience from being an ITA* Therapist, a trainer for coaches and therapists, a managing director and a coach, to create her unique coaching brand, Arcata. Other successes include the How Women Work community with its annual conferences and the many spin-offs such as the How Women Succeed CSR Book project, an inspirational self-coaching book of which the proceeds are being used to provide free coaching for women of lower income. In her free time, Carolin follows her passion as a core team member of the ‘Qatar Professional Women’s Network’ (QPWN) and is the leader of the mentoring ring ‘Circle of Pearl’. She is also a popular motivational speaker and the author of several self-coaching publications, printed as monthly columns and, most recently, in the book, How Women Succeed — Inspiring women to create their own success.

“What I love about my work is that it allows me to make a difference, every day, in so many ways. Whether I am working with individuals or organisations, it’s all about (re-)installing engagement, enthusiasm and commitment to their goals, aspirations and values to make them a reality.”

Amal Al Mannai

AMAL AL MANNAI Amal Al Mannai is the Executive Director of the Social Development Centre (SDC), a member of the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, which is a non-profit social and development organisation that aims primarily to develop family and community capabilities in Qatar. It was established in 1996 under the patronage of H.E. Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser. During her professional career Amal has held several high-ranking leadership positions and was recently honoured for her community development initiatives at SDC by receiving the award for Female Civil Society Leader of the year at the Third Annual Tawasul Civil Society Leaders Awards in Muscat, Oman. To serve her community, her people, her country and mankind is the nucleus of Amal’s aspirations. Emel Atikkan

EMEL ATIKKAN Passionate, ambitious, energetic, self-motivated and a perfectionist is how Emel describes herself. Personal qualities that have undoubtedly contributed to her achievement in becoming the first female General Manager of the Kempinski Group, the first female GM in Qatar and the first Turkish woman to reach her position. Emel admits that obstacles have no place on her agenda, just a positive attitude, a free spirit and a love affair with life. After graduating from the American College in Istanbul her plan was to travel; to pursue a career was rather unconventional for a Turkish woman at that time. However, she took a junior position with the Hilton Group, which set her on her career path. In 1993 Emel joined the Kempinski Group and worked her way up through the company’s corporate ladder. This involved overseas postings in China, Zanzibar, Malta and currently Qatar. She has had much to prove, not only as a woman in a predominantly male environment, but also as the first female GM for Kempinski, initially appointed to her position in 2004. Emel admits she doesn’t dwell too much on her status, although she is happy if her achievements have helped open doors for other women. “I love what I do. The secret of success is basically the passion for my job. My engagement with the property and the brand, the enthusiasm and the devotion for what I’m doing gives me the everyday inspiration to lead my team and achieve together great results in delivering positive feelings to those who decide to move into the five-star residence in Doha, making them feel comfortably at home.”

HILLARY KOSMA Hillary Kosma, entrepreneur, and founder and owner of Glow American Salon, first arrived in Qatar in 2006 along with her husband, Mike, who is also co-owner and Hillary’s business partner. Although she is originally from Oregon in the USA, Hillary now calls Qatar home. As a professional hairstylist Hillary has turned her love of beauty and people into a successful business. Initially it was Mike who was working when they arrived, however, Hillary missed working as a hairstylist, so decided to set up her first salon in Doha in 2007 with just two employees, styling hair and offering beauty treatments. The salon’s rapid popularity allowed Hillary to further expand and Glow American Salon now has a team of over 30 international employees and two salons. Glow is not just another hair salon. Hillary utilises the facilities to promote women whose inspirational work and contribution to Qatar’s community may otherwise go unannounced; she regularly brings attention to these women by rewarding them with well deserved pampering treats and makeovers, highlighting their strengths and motivation, which in turn serves to inspire others. Hillary’s endearing personality and appreciation for the people in Qatar’s community undoubtedly contributes to her achievements. She sincerely awards her gratitude to all the women in Qatar who have been loyal clients, supporting her since she initially set up her business, and honours them as being a major factor towards her success and achievement. In a seemingly short period of time, Hillary’s determination, hard work and willingness to seize an opportunity makes her an ideal role model for every woman who aspires to create something positive.

“Your life is like a canvas — paint it with your dreams — splash it with colour and light, erase negative people and design it with the things you love that make you happy. Work on creating how you want to live, who you want to be and what you want to do. You have the ability to do anything and live your life to the fullest. You are a beautiful masterpiece.”

Margarita Zuniga

MARGARITA ZUNIGA Born into a migrant family, travelling in the back of a pick-up truck with seven siblings, Margarita Zuniga realised early on in her childhood that a new day was another hard working day for her and her family. Constantly moving from one State to another didn’t allow for completing her education at that time. Each move meant new challenges. In her own words she considers herself, “A student of life, always learning to attain a higher level of spirituality. Dedicated to empowering mankind by promoting truth, honouring oneself and sharing knowledge,” which she believes, are key elements to self-development. She is a single parent and a dedicated proactive mother of four teenagers who are her pride and joy. “I knew that the only way to succeed as a single parent was to build a strong, close family. I believe that it is family that defines the very essence of our identity. Margarita holds a BA in History and works as the Dean’s Office Administrator at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCUQ) as well as being a business partner in an interior design company, which employs over 125 individuals. Her name is synonymous with countless charities and organisations in Qatar, where she volunteers her time. She is the Alliance Leader for the Qatar Professional Women’s Network, supporting the development of women; an advocate for breast cancer awareness, which is committed to saving lives by educating the local community through the support of the Qatar National Cancer Society, and an Officer for The Ladies of Harley in Qatar, participating in group rides and fundraisers. Along with her family she was offered the opportunity by H.E. Sheikha Mozah’s Office to start ‘Best Buddies in Qatar’, which provides socialisation opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities throughout Qatar. Her contributions to Qatar’s community are endless.

“Remember the most important person is YOU. Success starts with believing in yourself and making YOU a priority, so feed your mind, body and inner spirit with love. Always think positive. Your thoughts are so powerful it creates you. The power to change is all in you.” 46

MARIA JESUS LOPEZ MARTOS Maria Jesus Lopez Martos was recently appointed as the new Director of Sales and Marketing at Sheraton Doha Resort & Convention Hotel. Having arrived in Qatar just two months ago, Maria is learning to adapt to an unfamiliar culture, never having lived or worked in the Middle East before. Alongside that, her high profile position will no doubt reveal countless challenges as all eyes are on her; more so in that 2012 celebrates the Thirtieth anniversary for the legendary establishment and will be going through some major refurbishments. With ambitions to work in the hospitality industry Maria equipped herself with an impressive set of qualifications; a Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations followed by a Bachelor’s degree in Business and Tourism from her native city of Barcelona. Acquiring qualifications alone was not enough to achieve her aspirations and so she set out to gain as much experience as possible to back them up. It’s the nature of her chosen profession that she would undoubtedly need to travel. Having previously worked at the Hoteles Hesperia in Spain, The Westin Marbella, the Sheraton in Gambia and W Mexico, quickly adapting to unfamiliar surroundings as well as the contrast in clientele, facilities, ambience and image is vital. She also is responsible for a team of individuals and having to make major decisions, which can affect not only business, but also the livelihoods of others. For Maria everyday is about learning and experiencing new elements, which will enable her to build on her experience. With a positive outlook she is prepared for the challenges that lay ahead. It’s about having ambition, determination, being versatile and willing to work hard — success will follow.

“You can wish to be whatever you want, the only obstacle is yourself.”

NINA HEIDENREICH Nina Heidenreich, born in Regensburg, Germany, is an extremely gifted musician. As Principal Second Violinist at Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra (QPO) Nina is the first to admit that, “Performing with the Orchestra is far more than just a job, it’s a dream come true.” She gave her first soloist debut at the age of nine in Paris and since then has studied and performed extensively throughout her life. Being born with a talent does not automatically remove challenges from life and indeed undoubtedly in some cases it adds extra pressure to succeed. Nina’s musical career has taken her to several countries and in 2008 she applied for a position with QPO. Out of 3,700 applicants, Nina was chosen to join the 100 other successful applicants, who now make up the 101 members of QPO. Initially Qatar was a culture shock to Nina with her first reaction upon arrival being, “What have I done? I’m in the desert!” Her fear quickly subsided and she now adores living in Doha. With the QPO concerts in full swing, performing takes a tremendous amount of discipline and stamina. Ahead of a concert Nina practices for two to three hours daily prior to the actual performance. In contrast to her musical career, Nina helps her parents in their fashion design business, by designing traditional Bavarian and Austrian costumes, which are manufactured by her parent’s company. Nina says that she has found contentment since moving to Qatar, “I have 90 percent of all that I need in my life.” Her advice to budding musicians is to start as early as possible and play music you enjoy and have fun with. It’s never too late to learn. Maryah Al Dafa

MARYAH AL DAFA Maryah Al Dafa divides her time by working as Senior Projects Manager at the Office of the President, Qatar Foundation, and as Owner and Director of the only International Vera Wang retail store in the Middle East, located at the Pearl, Qatar. She successfully combines two contrasting roles, each with their own set of challenges. Although only in her mid-twenties, Maryah’s drive, determination and enthusiasm to give something back to her country demonstrates a maturity and wisdom way beyond her years. She travelled abroad extensively with her family whilst growing up, due to her father’s role as an Ambassador, and studied overseas at University. She returned to Qatar in 2007 with a Master’s degree in International Politics and began her work with the Qatar Foundation, which is vitally important to her and involves education, research, new initiatives and partnerships. Even whilst studying at University Maryah became involved with the multi-brand store ‘Arabella’ at Royal Plaza, which eventually led her towards the collaboration with Vera Wang. Introducing the unfamiliar brand Vera Wang to Qatar meant yet more challenges, which Maryah admits she thrives on. The bureaucracy involved when setting up a business in Qatar is overwhelmingly challenging and she says, “Success comes down to contributing 120 percent effort.” For Maryah, business is not all about making a profit; it’s also about contributing to society, to charity and giving something positive back to her country.

"If you want something and it seems far, you make it closer and work towards it instead of waiting until it comes to you."

"It is of incomparable importance to me to live an independent life. The freedom to make my own decisions is priceless and something I wish every woman on this planet had! Besides that I am so happy to have really wonderful girlfriends. Spending time with them, sharing joy and sorrow, and knowing there are people I can truly rely on, is something I am deeply grateful for."

Celebrity Scoop

Secret Symphony Katie Melua has had an amazing string of hits since arriving on the music scene in 2003. As she prepares for the release of her fifth album, Secret Symphony, Ben Whittaker speaks to her about music, life and almost a decade in the business.

Celebrity Scoop

atie Melua has never let success go to her head, despite the fact that she is one of the best known and loved artists in the music industry. Born and raised in Georgia, Katie moved to Northern Ireland as a child and then to England as a teenager when her family relocated. “My life today is very different to how it was as a child, so I don’t tend to take anything for granted,” she says. “Living in Georgia I would sometimes have to climb five flights of stairs with water for the family, so my first experience of running water and a warm bath was almost as exciting as having my first hit single!” Katie was discovered at a Brit School showcase by producer Mike Batt who quickly signed the 18-year old to his own Dramatico label. Her first single, The Closest Thing to Crazy, was picked up by Radio 2 and played regularly by firm fan and the then breakfast show host Terry Wogan. His support raised her profile in the UK and when her album, Call Off The Search was released in November 2003, it entered the Top 40 Album Charts. “Things started to move quite quickly from thereon in. I got to perform on the Royal Variety Show and by January 2004 my album was number one,” says Katie. Call Off The Search went on to sell over 3.6 million copies worldwide and her star was certainly in the ascendancy. Three more albums followed, all major successes, and Katie went on to perform all over the world. By May 2011 she was number two in the under 30s rich list and had established herself as one of the bestselling international artists of her generation. With the forthcoming release of Secret Symphony, Katie’s enthusiasm and professionalism still shines through. This time there’s a broader, more orchestral flavour that she has wanted to achieve for some time. “The idea for Secret Symphony started after I did a concert in Stuttgart in 2008. I thought I would love to do an album with a full orchestra, and after my last tour, I discussed the idea with Mike who was very excited and supportive. I am really happy with the finished product. I hope my fans will enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed making it.”

With a tour planned to support the new album and a special summer event at Hampton Court also scheduled this year, Katie certainly shows no signs of slowing down. “I love touring and I love being on stage,” she tells us, “The hardest part is the travelling but when you have a new audience every night, with fresh faces responding to your performances, it brings a renewed impetus to everything you are doing. “It’s that feeling that brings a genuine sense of uniqueness to every gig.” Being a star has always been secondary to being a musician for Katie, and while fame has brought its benefits, it was never fame that drove her ambition. As a consequence, she has many interests that drive her. “My private life has always been very important to me and because of that I keep what goes on outside work away from the spotlight; that way it’s easy for me to remain anonymous a lot of the time. “I love being with my friends, and family is very important to me. When I can find the time, I also indulge in a spot of gardening and like to go to gigs.” So who inspires her and what is she listening to at the moment? “I grew up with an eclectic taste in music — everything from Eva Cassidy to Joni Mitchell to The Beatles made it onto my play list. In fact, I was on the Parkinson show in the early days with Paul McCartney and he was kind enough to compliment me on my work, which was a massive thrill for someone who had always loved his music with the band. These days I love everything from Keane to Coldplay and if I had the chance I would like to perform with Joni Mitchell.” So how difficult an environment is the music industry for a woman? “I’ve never encountered a problem. There are so many great female artists emerging right now that you’d have to say the future is pretty bright for female talent. However, I do think there is still some work to be done on the behind-the-scenes element of the business, where sadly men greatly outnumber their female counterparts.” Katie also recently announced her engagement to World Superbike racer, James Toseland. “We got engaged in December but when he asked me I really wasn’t expecting it, so it was the best present you could have for Christmas!” Secret Symphony is released in the UK on March 5 and Katie’s new single Better Than A Dream is released the week after. La Bohème Eyeshadow Palette

Using the Brown shade of the palette, draw a banana in the hollow of the eyelid. Next apply the Green shade from the palette under the eye. For that extra touch of light, apply the Coral colour to the brow bone, and blend. La Bohème Aqua Eyes

Apply white kohl pencil to your inner lash line. Next, apply Gypsy Aqua Eyes to the upper lash to accentuate the eyes.

STEP 6

STEP 3

Apply the Purple shade from the palette onto the inner side of your eyelids, until you reach the wanted result. Then apply the Lagoon Green shade from the palette on the other (outer) side of your eyelids. Still using the sponge applicator, make sure to blend the two colours together.

Apply the Smoky Lash Mascara to the lashes, sweeping it upwards from root to tip to plump individual lashes and achieve a voluminous look. Continue building lashes until you reach the desired effect. Repeat on lower lashes.

STEP 5

La Bohème Rouge Artist Natural - Red Coral

STEP 4

STEP 2

STEP 1

After creating your base, start by applying the Beige colour under your eyebrows, under the bottom lash line and to the inner corner of your eyes using the La Bohème Palette and a sponge applicator. Enriched with mineral powders and a high concentration of pearl, these luminous eye shadows offer a pearly or sparkle finish with the colour intensity you desire.

To finish off your Bohemian beauty look, apply the Rouge Artist Natural in the iridescent Red Coral shade. Apply a few coats directly onto your lips for a full colour result. Rouge Artist Natural is a moisturising lipstick that colours the lips naturally while enhancing their radiance. The new limited edition shades, Red Coral and Peach Beige embellish the lips with a romantic shimmer.

Top Tips For an easier application and a more colourful result, apply the La Bohème Eyeshadows with a sponge applicator. For a natural and subtle makeup result, use the eyeshadow dry. To achieve more intense colour and finish, apply the eyeshadow with a moistened foam tip applicator. 71

Wellbeing

Bye Bye Baby Bump! After nine months of feasting on unusual cravings, whether it’s pizza topped with lashings of caramelised banana or a jar of pickled onions on the hour every hour, you finally have your little bundle of joy‌ plus that not so little bundle of baby bump fat. Giving birth is a victory; losing baby fat can be a battle. Fear not! Ohlala! takes advice from certified strength and conditioning specialist and rehabilitation expert, Craig Bunting, Head Tutor at LIA-Qatar, the first full time Fitness Certification Academy in the Middle East. 74

Ohlala! I March 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

S

leepless nights with a newborn can truly take its toll, and exercising after giving birth may be the last thing you crave. However, baby’s bump doesn’t just vanish when Junior leaves the womb, so what to do if you want that Yummy Mummy figure back? Can you safely slip on your trainers and work off those ‘eating for two’ days? The question is, “How soon is too soon?” C.B. It’s a fact that every woman’s body is different; and some will return to their pre-baby fitness levels quicker and with less effort than others. For those whom it might take a bit longer, it is vitally important to relax, take stock, and remember that with consistency and patience it will happen. There are some general guidelines to follow that will help those looking to get back into shape when the time comes. The stronger you are when you go into a birth, the faster you will recover afterwards. This is a good reason to try and remain physically active during pregnancy, even though for some women it can be tough. I highly recommend that caution must always be observed. Several postural changes occur during pregnancy, which can lead to back, hip and knee pain. Furthermore, hormonal levels also place the muscles and ligaments under more strain, which can lead to aches and sprains. After a natural birthing process, it is recommended that a six to eight week rest period be followed to allow the body to heal and recover. Caesarean births require more time and women are recommended to wait at least 12 weeks before starting back into exercise. In both cases, it is highly recommended to start slowly; focus on the body’s inner core muscles that help to stabilise the spine and protect against back pain and other dysfunctions.

A version of the Plank exercise Core Stability versus Core Strength: When I ask my students what exercise category ‘The Plank’ would fall into, the majority say ‘core stability’. Wrong! Core stability exercises barely stress the body. If the muscle(s) are working properly, you should barely notice the exercise at all. It can be compared to a low wattage light bulb; always on but not burning a lot of energy. There are few people who can do ‘the plank’ exercise and not notice it. Therefore, it’s definitely a core strength exercise — a good one to practice although one that takes more effort. Get lean: You can do this by building a good amount of lean muscle on your body, while safely and gradually decreasing your body fat. This causes your metabolism to skyrocket as lean muscle requires more calories to maintain than fat. Other benefits include an increase in strength and every one of us can benefit from being stronger. Exercise becomes easier and you’re less likely to suffer injury. A major contribution is nutrition; you cannot out-train a bad diet. If you are aiming to decrease body fat and tone up, you will need to study your current eating patterns and be willing to make changes. How much change will depend on how flawed your nutritional habits are (most of us are capable of convincing ourselves that our nutrition is better than it actually is). Bonus Tip: Always listen to what your body is telling you. Always exercise with caution when first getting back into the gym. If you experience any discomfort whatsoever, you should stop immediately and consult your GP for further advice and guidance. FELINE FRIENDLY

With countless stray, abandoned and neglected animals roaming the streets of Qatar, the question is, who cares? Thankfully there are compassionate people who do. Several animal welfare groups throughout Doha make every effort to provide care and shelter for such animals, whilst relying on the goodwill of volunteers and donations. One such group, Cats in Qatar (CIQ) focuses on rescuing homeless and abandoned cats and kittens, awarding them their basic right to a decent life. 76

Ohlala! I March 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

I

f you’ve ever passed a trash can in the streets of Doha and heard it rustle, there’s probably a lone cat or even a posse of pussycats scratching around inside for their dinner. Sadly, there’s not always enough to go around. That’s when the sight of starved, emaciated felines displaying desperate cases of neglect, call attention to the fact that the streets of Doha are home to a serious contingent of animals in despair. While there is misfortune for many, there is fortunately help for some. CIQ is a non-profit organisation, which was founded in 2010 by Vicki Halpin and Gill Shurey. Although long before that date, the rescue of one needy cat at a time was taking place. The organisation is run entirely by volunteers and managed by a core team of five members, many of whom hold down full time jobs and utilise their spare time to help manage CIQ, which does not have an animal shelter, instead operates through a foster-based network. Another important factor of the CIQ is to promote the Cat Control Unit’s Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programme for street cats. There is a free governmental service currently offering a neuter programme, although it is limited. CIQ aim to support this by raising awareness of the TNR programme, which can humanely aid in controlling the cat population and help to significantly reduce the amount of unwanted kittens born each year. “CIQ began because of a basic need. For some reason, cats suffering with hardship find me. For six days in a row I came home with a new rescue. They look at you with those pathetic eyes and your heart just melts. It’s impossible to leave them hungry and sick or injured. There was no organisation out there that could help — I had to do something,” admits CIQ’s founder, Vicki. Fortunately Vicki and Gill’s mission is aided by dedicated, determined and hardworking individuals who between them have rescued, supported and re-homed approximately 150 cats. “It’s a misconception that a cat can easily survive on the street; once a cat has been fully domesticated, it loses its instincts to hunt or forage for food. Most cats left to survive outdoors will succumb to starvation, thirst, disease, injury, parasites or predation,” a sad fact stated by CIQ.

Of course there are high costs involved with such a rescue programme. Veterinary services and medications, food and litter, advertising fees, plus the early spay neuter programme, which can all add up to hundreds of riyals per kitten/cat, depending on their circumstance. That’s why fundraising and sponsorship is essential. CIQ is currently seeking sponsorship for the launch of the quarterly newsletter. One fundraising event per month is their aim to aid the cost of supplies and veterinary services. Craft fairs, car boot sales, book fairs and adoption days are all interesting events that can aid the resources of CIQ. How can you help? However little time you can spare volunteering will be a massive help to these animals in the long run. Whether you can offer an animal a loving, long-term home, foster a cat (85 cats are currently hoping for loving homes) assist with fundraising events, attend an event, make a donation or provide administrative support; anything and everything can make a difference. Corporations can help greatly by sponsoring events, donating towards costs, advertising and raising awareness of CIQ to company employees. The human-animal relationship can be extremely rewarding as in the words of Charles Dickens, “What greater gift than the love of a cat?”

Divine Flavours Italy Take one seriously creative Italian Chef with an immense passion for food, add a palate pleasing portion of Umbrian flavour, mix with a plateful of the freshest ingredients and serve with a dash of grandmother’s inspiration. There you have the ultimate recipe for perfect Italian cuisine, courtesy of newly appointed Chef, Federica Piccioni at La Veranda restaurant, Sheraton Resort Doha. egulars who have been enjoying the Italian cuisine at this well-established dining venue are in for a treat. The newly appointed Italian Chef, Federica Piccioni has recently taken over the open kitchen, and will be upgrading the already popular menu to include authentic regional flavours from her home town of Perugia, Umbria. At lunchtime during the week, the indoor dining room is bustling with a mix of casual diners, businessmen and ladies out to lunch. In temperature friendly weather, the outdoor veranda seating must be taken advantage of, as the sea view is superb and offers a leisurely, romantic setting for dinner. The restaurant offers an inviting, rustic setting with elegantly laid tables; while the dominant windows give you the impression of sitting in a comfortable conservatory with a warm, informal atmosphere. Popular Italian guitarist and singer, Aziz Cheurfa will serenade diners throughout the week (except Mondays) with a medley of his music, during dinner (Sunday to Thursday) and at lunchtimes and evenings on Fridays. The staff is welcoming and friendly and will offer to bring you a refreshing beverage while you contemplate the menu, or get ready to indulge in the buffet. A glass of lemonade with fresh mint offers a particular zing that is sure to wake up your taste buds. Whether it’s buffet style or à la carte, the focus is on homecooked authentic Italian cuisine. Start by nibbling on crunchy garlic bread dipped in olive oil that resembles a dish of liquid gold, followed by a firm favourite of wood-fired oven-cooked pizza, which comes with a variety of toppings to satisfy all tastes. The Pizza with seafood is surprisingly light with a perfect thin crust and topped with plump muscles sprawled in their shells; it’s a delight to eat.

Homemade black linguine with tuna and scamorza cheese, garnished with lemon zest, is a dish that will appear on the new menu and is highly recommended. Delicate bites of tuna with a hint of citrus tangle tastily around a pretty bundle of pasta. One generous portion is enough for two to share even for those with large appetites. Chef Piccioni originates from Umbria, which is a region in Italy famous for its exquisite black truffle. Thankfully La Veranda diners will benefit from such divine ingredients, as Chef serves up Beef rollata with buffalo mozzarella and garlic polenta accompanied by garden vegetables with a truffle sauce. This is one seriously fabulous feast of flavours all on one plate. The beef fillet is attractively sliced displaying the layers of ingredients sitting atop a bed of delicious vegetables, and is surpassed only by the truly ultimate treat of truffle sauce. The polenta is also an enjoyable, alternative accompaniment. This is a unique main course that will have you promising yourself you’ll be back for more. There is undoubtedly no limit to Chef Piccioni’s talent when it comes to producing unique yet supremely authentic Italian cuisine. Desserts are no exception. Her Torta Caprese with chocolate and walnut sauce, served with vanilla ice cream, needs no explanation other than it’s glorious! Umbrian cuisine is famous for its simplistic methods of cooking using fresh seasonal ingredients, although the presentation of each dish at La Veranda looks far from simple. Artistic? Yes. Fresh? Absolutely! It is the epitome of the most welcoming Italian comfort food. It’s a natural reaction to want to be best friends with Chef Piccioni; she has a warm, endearing personality and her passion for food is infectious. However, she admits that when she visits her home in Italy she tries to avoid doing any cooking these days, modestly confessing, “I still can’t cook as good as my mamma.” 79

ot only is this recipe simple, but it’s healthier than regular truffles because of the special ingredients used. When sourcing the ingredients, buy the best you can afford in their raw, natural state. You can find them in most health food stores or in the health section of major supermarkets. Cacao powder is made from the ground raw nibs from the cacao pod with the fat removed and is not processed like Cocoa powder. Real cacao chocolate is a superfood that’s packed full of powerful antioxidants that help neutralise free radicals from the effects of aging. It also contains micronutrients like potassium, zinc, magnesium, and iron for radiant skin, healthy hair, and strong nails. Moderation is still key as all chocolate contains caffeine, which triggers a stress response and surge of adrenal hormones. Maca, a root from the Andes, is known as an adaptagen because it increases our ability to handle stress by strengthening our adrenal glands.

METHOD Evenly oil 12 mold cavities with olive oil and place in the freezer to chill for at least 30 minutes. To test if it’s cold enough, drop a small amount of liquid chocolate onto it; it should solidify right away. To make the raspberry sauce, combine the raspberries, dates, syrup and water in the blender and blend well. Leave to one side. To make the liquid chocolate, place the coconut oil in a mixing bowl and whisk in cacao powder, mesquite powder, and agave syrup (if using) until smooth. Place a sheet of parchment paper on the counter. Pour the liquid chocolate carefully into the chilled tray cavities. Avoid spilling outside the molds. Let set for a few seconds, and then turn upside down to empty the liquid chocolate left in the molds on to the parchment. Then turn right side up. The molds should be lined with a thin layer of solid chocolate. Use a knife or spoon to clean the edges around the outside of each mold. Place the raspberry sauce carefully into the cavity of each chocolate mold. Pour on another layer of liquid chocolate to fill each mold to the brim and seal them closed. Place the filled tray in the freezer to harden for several minutes. Remove the mold from the freezer and turn upside down over parchment paper or a tray, and tap to release the filled chocolates from the tray. Enjoy immediately, of keep chilled in the fridge for up to three days. Recipe adapted from Ani’s Raw Food Desserts by Ani Phyo 81

Ultimate Destinations the Lone Traveller

Lao Tzu once said, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” — How better than to take that single step on your own? The common perception of travelling has suffered a dramatic change over the past decade. For many, the idea of going solo is deemed as being ‘too scary’ but how do you know if you have never tried it? Zara de Haldevang checks out the top four destinations designed with your safety in mind. Nepal

For the active woman there is no better holiday to go on than one which involves adventure and exercise. Draped along the greatest heights of the Himalayas, Nepal marks the location where the heat of the Indian plains meets the ice-cold of the mountains. Known for some of the best trekking on earth, the country’s three great mini kingdoms, Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur, are home to some of the most sophisticated urban cultures and world-class artistic and architectural heritage. Nepal stands as one of the few locations where you can trek for weeks without the need for a tent. One trekking magnet is the Abode of Snows, located in the Kathmandu Valley, where even the most novice of hikers can reach ultimate limits. Your search for an adrenaline kick doesn’t have to stop there; white-water rafting, kayaking and mountain biking are all available to travellers. If you are a fan of catching a glimpse of one of the Big Five, Chitwan National Park is really where you should go. Here you can trek on foot or elephant-back to view some of the most endangered species on our planet. Nepal stands as one of the most diverse and interesting countries to visit, where any and every traveller will already be planning their trip back to this exciting destination. 84

Vietnam

Vietnam is hands-down the most female-friendly travel destination in Southeast Asia. Known for their curiosity of the Western ways, the local people embrace travellers, so much to the point that many visitors consist of mothers and their children. What was once perceived as a problematic issue, the improved education system means that the language barrier poses little issue for English speakers. Perhaps the hardest factor for the lonesome traveller to overcome is the existence of poverty found in the tiny mountain villages; areas such as Sa Pa are the homes to indigenous hill tribes and still suffer greatly from a serious lack of wealth. If these sights are prone to evoke your sympathy, then sign up for volunteer work at an orphanage with the Global Volunteer Network, where you can really make a difference by helping those in serious need. Preparation is key when travelling to Vietnam. With the visa situation in constant disarray, it is safer to obtain a visa before arrival. Numerous online agencies can issue a visa but a letter of approval is also necessary to enter the country. Air is by no means the only way to enter the country; the bordering countries Cambodia, China and Laos all offer road and train networks accessible by foreigners. No visit to Vietnam is complete without seeing it from all angles, so make sure you spend some time at sea. This country is renowned for its untouched beauty, hidden heritage and breath-taking views — it would be a shame to not visit here while this lasts. www.globalvolunteernetwork.org/vietnam/ 85

New Zealand

Here’s a fact for you — did you know you are more likely to bump into sheep here than a human being? With an estimated 4.2 million people living in this country, this utterly unspoiled and photogenic destination is one that will literally leave you breathless every time you open your eyes. This isn’t just a place to visit to marvel at the incredible landscape, this is where you go to discover glaciers, bungee jump off hanging cabins, rent a camper van and drive for miles. New Zealand is also the spot to go for backpacking. You really have to give both islands enough attention as it would be a shame to miss out on everything it has to offer. Start in Auckland. To really get off the beaten track check out Stray Travel, a company that provides unlimited rides on their provided buses, so you can hop on and off whenever it pleases you. There are also accommodation options to accompany it, so you can pre-book hostels or lodges to ensure your get a good night’s sleep. Franz Josef, on the south island, is where the glaciers are and is truly worth your time. Make sure you check out Makarora, and of course, Queenstown before you hit Christchurch. Queenstown is the home of the Nevis Highwire bungee jump, the highest commercial bungee in the world at 134 metres above the Nevis River. Or perhaps try skydiving, mountain climbing, skiing and snowboarding (season permitting), hand-gliding… the list is endless. www.straytravel.com 86

Singapore

Western travellers have always been daunted at the prospect of visiting Asia due to the dramatically different cultures and languages found in every country. Singapore, however, is one location deemed as a safe, English-speaking and an easy-to-navigate island nation just off the southern tip of Malaysia. If this is your first time to the ‘Far East’, then you couldn’t choose a better spot. Singapore adores tourism with an abundance of events on offer throughout the year to encourage visitors to watch the spectacles and take part in different cultures. July sees the Singapore Food Festival and in the autumn, there is the Singapore Sun Festival; a celebration of music, art, literature, film, wine, food and wellness. So how about absorbing some of the heritage. No trip here would be fulfilled without visiting all the different ethnic quarters, including Malaysian, Indian, Peranakan and Chinese. ‘Hop-on, hop-off ’ bus tours really are the way forward as you have the freedom to spend as much time as you like at each stop. The Fountain of Wealth, which at 216 feet wide is the Guinness Record approved largest fountain in the world, is located in the Suntec City shopping mall and is a must see. The best thing about Singapore is the accessibility to travel on to other destinations. Flights are cheap and frequent, so Thailand is next on your cards (friends recommended), the fee is low and the experience unmatchable.

Diva Drives Beautiful lines, well-honed proportions and neat styling details make the Audi A6 a fine-looking sample of a German luxury sedan. Audi A6 2.8 FSI Quattro 2012

Indeed it is a great looking car — inside and outside. The car looks exquisite and feels expensive inside, thanks to choice materials and surfaces that not only look good but are also tactile and soft to the touch. Audi is a leader in automotive LED light technology, being the first car manufacturer in the world to introduce it, and it gives that extra oomph to the look of the car, but the A6 is more than just good looks. Powered by a fuel-efficient V6 direct fuel injection engine with 208-horsepower, it accelerates from 0-100 kilometres per hour in just 8.1 seconds, not lighting fast but quite respectable for a car of this size. The A6 is loaded with top-notch technology from driving systems and safety features to infotainment. Available systems include, for example, adaptive cruise control with Stop&Go function, automatic parking, head-up display, lane assist system, night vision with pedestrian detection, mobile WiFi hotspot, adaptive headlights, and the list goes on… The A6 boasts the Audi drive select system with four modes to choose from: comfort, dynamic, auto and individual. The individual mode means that you can control the steering, throttle and automatic transmissions behaviour to suit your desires. My personal favourite was the dynamic mode, which immediately gave a far sportier feel and more punch to the drive. The A6’s permanent all-wheel drive system ensures the car has a fantastic grip and agility, and paired together with the brilliant dynamic steering system, give the driver great confidence when tackling twists and turns. If you are one of those ladies who is not confident with parking, the automatic parking system comes in very useful. It searches for suitable parking spaces along the road or car park by means of ultrasonic sensors, calculates the ideal parking path and performs the steering action virtually automatically. The steering is initiated by the vehicle, the driver needs only to accelerate and apply the brakes; a clever piece

of technology that does the job. The MMI (Multi Media Interface) controls entertainment, communication and navigation functions via the dash-mounted popup screen; and a knob and buttons on the center console. The system boasts logical menus and crisp graphics with an attractive dash layout. Connecting my iPhone with the Bluetooth was very easy, and I could immediately listen to music from my phone and enjoy the excellent sound system. The A6 has a five-star safety rating and comes with plenty of safety features. It has dual front, front and rear side airbags and full-length curtain airbags that come into play if the anti-lock brakes and stability and traction controls fail to help you avoid the collision in the first place. My test A6 came equipped with front and rear parking sensors, blind spot monitors and a reverse camera, which are not only convenient but also great safety features. The reverse camera shows what is going on behind the car and the on-screen guide illustrates the vehicles projected trajectory. The blind spot monitors are also a great help. The system "watches" your blind spot for you and illuminates a light in the side mirror when a car is positioned where you might not be able to see it. If you signal to merge into that lane while the car is in your blind spot, the light will flash to catch your attention. The A6 is an ideal small family car. If you have young children it has the ISOFIX child seat mounting for easy installation of safety seats. The rear is spacious enough for older kids too, and the Wi-Fi hotspot facility will be a hit with them for sure. Audi certainly know how to design a car and the A6’s stylish and elegant exterior as well as well-appointed contemporary interior ambience are a testament to that. We like! Images by George Mathew

More than 15 Marketing, Communications and Public Relations hotel professionals attended the re-launch, including Sheraton, Sharq Village and Spa, The Ritz-Carlton, Four Seasons, InterContinental, St Regis and many more. “I think it was a necessity to re-launch the dinner, wherever we all worked before; the PR dinner is an institution that no one wants to miss! Horoscope

March Happy Birthday Ms Pisces

March is your month, so you can expect good things over the coming weeks that will help to improve the way 2012 unfolds for you. That doesn’t mean there won’t be challenges, just that you will be able to overcome them. Financially you could be called upon to help a family member who is in serious need of your assistance but it will mean executing some serious diplomacy if you are to keep everyone happy. The chance for a holiday break may also present itself around March 23, so make sure your passport is in date! On the work front, you may be given the opportunity to embark on a new venture that might require some investment on your part but could offer a big return, if you are willing to take the gamble.

February 19 – March 19

Pisces — at a glance

Pisces is one of the most creative signs in the Zodiac, which means they are both imaginative and understanding but also some times unrealistic and impractical. You are also very romantic and love any pursuits of the arts. Your sign loves the idea of love and you want to be wanted as a person. In a negative way this can sometimes make you a little needy and your loyalty can see you giving more than you receive. You are also a very sensitive person and do not like your family balance upset. As a consequence you do not reveal a lot of your private life to those outside of your close circle unless you really have to.

Romance could be a key feature for your sign this month as a trip away rekindles the fires of a relationship that has come under strain lately. Whether it’s a weekend or a week, time spent in a fresh environment will also help you develop fresh ideas, so all in all it will prove to be a positive experience. On the health front you may need to re-evaluate your diet so be sure to deal with the issue, otherwise it could cause further complications if left untreated. Finally, look for positive news in the mail around March 7 to really set up your finances.

TAURUS (April 20 – May 20)

March could be the month of transition for your sign as you look to move your career into a new direction for 2012. It might be a decision you have been contemplating for a while now and perhaps is a little overdue, but once your mind is made up, you should grab the opportunities it offers with enthusiasm. Financially you could have to restructure a business approach but this is going to prove a good thing in the long term. Lucky 13 is your number of fortune as is the number nine, so utilise them where you can.

CANCER (June 21 – July 22)

The time for being afraid of taking a chance has to be put behind you Cancer if you are ever to make any headway in your life and attain the success you crave — both at work and in a relationship. Where career is concerned you need to learn to speak your mind and the ideal opportunity will present itself to you in the second week of March, so do not run from the chance to make your mark. Missing out will see you having to wait a hell of a long time before you do so again. On the relationship front, a partnership, which has not been going well, needs to be ended before the two of you start resenting each other. You cannot stay with someone out of pity, and if that is your only motivation then you should get out now!

VIRGO (August 23 — September 22)

Finally, your stand out month is September in matter of finance.

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)

This is the month that you change career and for many of you this will mean a stint in the limelight, so be prepared to step into the spotlight. For your usually secretive and internal sign, it could be the door that opens your personality up and brings a new sense of confidence to you. From here, luck will come to you in a red outfit with a white bird tattoo and could mean financial rewards if you are quick to react. Overall, it’s good news in all areas of your life so prepare for good times to illuminate your immediate future.

Capricorn (Dec 22 – January 19)

There will be many opportunities for you to make amends over the coming weeks for harsh words said in February, although effort and desire on your part are going to be required if you are to make any significant inroads. On the top of your list is career, with March being a crunch time for you to make a decision about where you are going and what you want to do. A change of job will be presented to you but if you don’t have the courage to take the chance then you may regret it later. On the home front a parent could be ill around the latter part of the month and you will need to take time out to look after them.

GEMINI (May 21 – June 20)

On the relationship front you might be pulled into line by a partner who is desperate for commitment from you and now might be the time to decide whether you want to move forward and take the final step or call it a day before things get too serious. The choice is yours. Health wise, you need to take care of yourself — especially if your work involves any heavy lifting or strenuous exercise since there are warnings of back trouble. Finally, think carefully about a business approach by a colleague who may not have their numbers quite right.

LEO (July 23 – August 22)

Hope will exist in all situations at all times, no matter how bad things may seem. Bear that in mind when you negotiate your way through this March. On the work front you could be offered a job abroad but for those of you who have family commitments you should think carefully, no matter how good the package might appear. You cannot ignore your responsibilities. In any matters regarding health you should be careful to guard against injury to your feet, especially near water.

LIBRA (September 23 – October 22)

A job offer you may have recently accepted will see you accepting a post — that although well paid — could be not only much harder than you had anticipated but also with a company who are much more unstable then you first realised. So, don’t go out on any spending spree before you are settled, otherwise you could be left with a whole lot of debt and no income to pay it with! On the relationship front, you may find that the strains of a serious commitment are taking their toll and what you honestly desire now is space to exercise your personality.

Sagittarius (Nov 22 – Dec 21)

A current relationship has reached its course and the new love you were seeking to pursue has been dragging his or her heels to such an extent that you are now feeling most disheartened. However, good things are predicted for you in the first six months of 2012 especially as a new career you have been waiting on finally kicks off and through this venture you will also discover the answer to all your emotional problems. All you need to have here is a little faith. On matters of friendship you should consider the feelings of a close companion who you have possibly hurt or even ignored over the last few weeks.

Aquarius (January 20 – February 18)

The obstacles that have hampered your progress over recent weeks will finally be overcome and you can look forward to a more fluid and positive period in your life starting from this March. The world will seem a much better place and you will discover things about your inner self that were previously smothered by your concerns. On the relationship front, you will find love and romance hitting an all time high as you get closer and closer to what can only be described as your true soul mate. Your partner means business here — for life — so only say “I love you” if you mean it.
