Is it the end of the world? ecember 21, 2012, is regarded as the end-date of the Mesoamerican Long Count Calendar from Maya history. There are a varying range of beliefs on the topic of the 2012 phenomenon, some considering that it is marked as the end of the world, or a similar catastrophe, which scholars from various disciplines have dismissed. But can they dismiss the possibility of a Third World War, and the Earth being destroyed by human hands? Another interpretation of the date is that it marks the time in which Earth and its inhabitants may undergo a positive physical or spiritual transformation, the beginning of a new era. Whether you believe the speculation surrounding the event, or not, it does offer good food for thought. The Ohlala! team adore the idea of a positive transformation; we are all, the world over, in much need of this right now. Everyone can do their own part in making the world a better place by being compassionate towards others, taking care of their environment, and simply smiling. Go on, you know you want to. Take a look at the Ohlala! hotspots and festive feature for fantastic events happening across the island. We have a stylishly chic Hot in the City Fashion party at Kempinski hotel on December 13, and also watch out for an amazing event on December 21, and make sure to party like it’s the end of the world! Happy holidays and see you in the New Year.

What’s What from Deputy Editor, Zara de Haldevang.

t is with a sad face that I am writing my column this month, as it will be my last. Due to company expansion, I will be moving over to FACT Magazine full-time, so that means I must love and leave you all. On a more pleasant note, now is the perfect opportunity to wish you a very Merry Christmas and even happier New Year. 2012 has definitely been a year of ups and downs, highs and lows, relaxation and stress… Bahrain has remained strong and this is mainly due to the loyalty of its residents and the commitment to really make a difference. I am proud to call Bahrain my home; no matter what has happened, or what is yet to come.

December in a Nutshell It is Christmas time after all, which means loads of things are going on — parties, exhibitions, and charity events — you name it, it’s happening. One you need to attend is the Bud Music Live Battle of the Bands Final on December 7 at Coral Bay featuring, the one and only, Macy Gray. Performing a number of her old classics, as well as new tracks from her latest album Covered, this will be a great night all-round, featuring local and international talent. We also have Market 338 lasting until December 15 — the second annual event from Al Riwaq Art Space, which showcases work from local designers and artists. Look out for Fatim and the

A little mention should also go to the Open House taking place on December 8 from 9.30am at A Piece of Cake on Budaiya. Head down to sample some delicious mince pies and warm beverages. Don’t forget to be at The End Of The World Party, more details are in the Society Hotspots pages… For more news on events, check out our Facebook and Twitter pages, and if you want to get yours featured, drop us an email on events@ohlala-magazine.com.

THE CAUSE

Building A Better Future

One of the newest organisations on the charity scene in Bahrain is the Arab Youth Climate Movement; a breath of fresh air for the island with the utmost hope to restore the country’s climate back to what it once was. Zara de Haldevang talks to Reem Al Mealla, the National Coordinator of AYCM to find out more. Images by Shobin Joseph 30

“Arabia is always portrayed as a region of oil with no care for the climate, AYCM was formed to break this stereotype and voice Arabs’ concerns, as we stand for more than just oil.”

F

ormed just three months ago, the AYCM is a force to be reckoned with. It was established in the lead up to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change COP18 Doha negotiations. Prior to the founding of the AYCM, there was no form of climate movement in the Arab region — Reem tells Ohlala!, “Arabia is always portrayed as a region of oil with no care for the climate, AYCM was formed to break this stereotype and voice Arabs’ concerns, as we stand for more than just oil. Currently partnering with 350.org, IndyAct, Global Campaign for Climate Change (GCCA) and the Climate Action Network, it was actually these names that helped to create the concept. Reem explains that, “The AYCM has a simple vision: We want to be able to enjoy a stable climate similar to that which our parents and grandparents enjoyed. “Currently AYCM is preparing itself for the Conference of Youth and Conference of Parties. Country coordinators around the MENA region are working within their countries to spread the movement. This involves running educational workshops to spread environmental awareness and bring climate change into the spotlight within Arab communities.” The current figures of involvement are on the increase, with tools such as social media acting as a successful means of attracting the attention of others. Reem tells us that, “AYCM is driven from over 20 national coordinators spread across 15 MENA countries and aims to make its presence felt from the Gulf to the Atlantic. “National coordinators started out in their countries either in pairs or alone. It has been three months since the organisation was officially launched, and now in each country there are more than ten members and this figure is constantly growing.” The most recent event held by AYCM was the ‘Day of Action’ last month. Designed to send out a message for people to connect youths from across the Arab world and encourage others to take the lead in climate negotiations. There were two sessions held during the day, the first targeted at governmental organisations and NGOs, whilst the evening session was specifically for students and youths from all walks of life. And what hopes does the AYCM have for the future? “We are aiming to grow stronger and become an influential group, not just regionally, but also internationally. Part of our agenda is to educate the youths and we do this by training and teaching them. Not just in a classroom but also by being able to go out into Bahrain’s natural open spaces and discover the country’s natural treasures. Some ideas include learning to identify types of birds by bird watching, as we are hoping to be able to build a large database documenting our local species. In addition, as an island, many would like to learn to dive to discover what lies beneath the sea. “Furthermore, we are hoping that the government will work with us to create a greener and more environmentally friendly Bahrain. We want to work with them not just in the environmental sector but also through education by conducting talks in schools and universities.” To get involved with AYCM, you can email the country cocoordinators Reem Al Mealla (n r.almealle@gmail.com) or Tariq Al Olaimy (t.olaimy@3blassociates.com). You can also ‘Like’ the AYCM Facebook page.

If Walls

Could Talk…

The latest exhibition about to hit the art scene, ‘If Walls Could Talk’ will be held at the Bahrain Financial Harbour. Ohlala! meets the 12 artists taking part, all of whom have explored the defining characteristics of ‘walls’ from structural, theoretical and philosophical perspectives. Hanin El Mardi Although Sudanese by birth, Hanin has lived in Bahrain her entire life and has long appreciated the architectural development within the region. Having graduated with a BA in 2010 from the Edinburgh College of Art, this artist developed a huge appreciation for the relationship between art and architecture.

“It is sometimes an inappropriate response to reality to go insane.” ~ Philip K. Dick

Leon D. Leon D., whose real name is actually Mohammed Alaabar, is a Bahraini self-taught artist, who has a passion in experimenting with pop and surreal art. His work tends to be a mixture of ideals, installed, illustrated or painted, and is heavily influenced by comics, religious and spiritual concepts, as well as by science and avant-garde music.

“The power of the imagination makes us infinite.” ~ John Muir

Khalil Rasool Currently working as a freelance photographer, half Turkish and half Bahraini, Khalil, is a keen traveller and has learnt a great deal from his trips. With the diversity of culture being a personal favourite, he has an eye for capturing moments that frequently go unnoticed.

“A man is but the product of his thoughts —what he thinks, he becomes.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Mercedes Gonzales De Garay An international visual artist originally from Spain, Mercedes' artistic practices include painting, graffiti and video art. Her career could be described as ‘nomadism’, where she explores a variety of cultures. This artist has participated in a number of worldwide projects, including some in New York, Istanbul, Beijing and Lisbon.

Fran Stafford An artist fascinated by the concept of questions rather than finding answers, Fran loves to study divergent schools of thought, examining material content and its relation to the fleeting present/very recent past. Having written five screenplays for Director/Producer Elbe Stevens, Fran is now the Exhibition Specialist for the Ministry of Culture.

“I am constantly inspired when memories of theories in books, scenes from films, or posts/threads I have read online, pop into my consciousness.”

Jenine Sharabi Born in Greece in 1985, Jenine relocated to Bahrain where she remained until she obtained a degree from Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design in London. With a passion for visual culture, this lady is a strong believer in its power to influence, shape and inspire minds. Jenine remains loyal to keeping her meticulous eye for graphic design as well as having the open mind of a conceptual artist.

“Luck is believing you’re lucky, that’s all.” ~ Tennessee Williams

Yasmin Sharabi Both American and Palestinian, Yasmin has spent most of her life on the island and has grown to understand the significant affect of one’s disconnection to land and place in influencing the development of the self. Her work is often dream-like, alluding to scenes from memory where there is a clear suggestion of a longing for place and grounding.

“Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible.” ~ Frank Zappa

Karima Sharabi Born in New Jersey, Karima was raised on the island and attended two local schools — both provided her with a solid artistic foundation upon which she could build her creative skills. Although she mostly paints portraits of people, Karima has begun creating symbols and allegories in her artwork that allude to idea of the spirituality and the human consciousness.

“Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.” ~ Helen Keller

Dalia El Mardi Currently the owner and manager of MASMARDI, an architectural firm based on the island, Dalia was born in Sudan in 1982 but was raised in Bahrain where she attended St Christopher’s School. She went on later to obtain a MA (Hons) in Architectural Design from the University of Edinburgh in 2005.

“If you know where it’s going, it’s not worth doing.” ~ Frank Gehry

Rana Jarbou Having recently embarked upon a calling in artistic expression, Rana left behind her background in banking and finance. Her latest project involved travelling across 12 Arab countries documenting graffiti in an attempt to give voice to society’s silent cries. Her book ‘Arabian Walls’ will be published in Spring 2013 and its content visualises a journey capturing a transitional period, while it aims to redefine the Arab world through a different lens, through its walls.

Woman in Power

Endearing Determination Life can be tough in the Gulf, especially when it’s of a charitable nature. Zara de Haldevang talks to Joyce Hughes, the lady behind the incredible success of the BSPCA, about life, animals and being a woman. Image by Shobin 34

Ohlala! I December 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

“The days when you see the horror stories and realise what humankind can do to animals; those are the days when you want to go and hide.”

oyce Hughes’ life has always played a close and unbreakable loyalty with animals. Having grown up in Berkshire in the United Kingdom, her childhood dream was to be a vet, however the idea of a five-year plan of continued education was warped by the need of a more immediate career. Putting her previous plans aside, she went on to continue her other passion of beauty, where she became a Purchasing Manager for names such as Max Factor and Revlon, before starting her own company in London. Describing herself as “a career girl” and “workaholic”, Joyce was fully focused on her path, meeting her husband only later on in life. She has now lived in Bahrain for 13 years. “I actually got married here in Bahrain on Hawar Island and rode an Arab Horse to the beach reception! For the first five years of being here I worked alongside my husband. During this time I started to take the time to look around and see the situation of animal welfare in Bahrain,” Joyce tells us, “at first I thought I could start breeding dogs, but due to the complete lack of control, it was out of the question.” In 2001 Joyce began gently supporting the BSPCA, where she played a significant part in fundraising. It was 2006 that marked her complete dedication to the charity, and from that point, her loyalty has been unquestionable. When asked about the obstacles to success, Joyce says, “It has been very tough. All aspects are against you, especially with the anti-canine bureaucracy. If people aren’t into animals then they are just not interested. It is a constant battle and burden, where a lot of people want help but not many want to volunteer. There are some days when you don’t have the motivation to do anything; the days when you see the horror stories and realise what humankind can do to animals; those are the days when you want to go and hide, but then I pull myself together and think, ‘well no one else is going to do it.’” Joyce is a very motivated person who embodies the meaning of determined. “Being a woman I think I have used all the things that God has given me,” she shares, “though obviously, in the Middle East there are many obstacles you have to face because of your gender. “What I have learnt here is that, although I am a very fair person, I hate injustice and I will never take no for an answer. I am the ultimate dog with a bone! Of course I have failed, everyone does, but at the same time I have been congratulated for my passion. “ The new shelter in Askar is a perfect example of Joyce’s success. After constant battling and struggle, the new premises portray what can be achieved on the island. “As much as I hate to say it, I would have to admit that if I were a male, then perhaps my success would have been greater,” Joyce begrudgingly confesses, “especially when targeting certain audiences and organisations.” The shelter rescues over 2,500 animals a year, a task that demands constant attention. It also stands as the only shelter in the entire Middle East to offer such care towards animal welfare. When asked what advice she would give to other women, Joyce’s reply rang loud and clear, “Follow your dreams and do not let anyone stand in your way. You need to have faith in yourself; if you see a light at the end of the tunnel then go after it! At the end of the day, we are only here once, so make it count. That is what I think I have achieved here… I think I have really achieved this.” To get involved with the BSPCA, visit www.bspca.org or call 3944 3047.

Ohlala! I December 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

Ohlala!’s Editor-atLarge, Ben Whittaker heads to the delightfully plush Imperial Suite at the Mandarin Oriental, London, for a chat with Jules, Stephen and Humphrey from the manband Blake — about new wardrobes, Take That and how to create a magical first date.

“We’re never going to wear brown suits again, that was somebody else’s idea.”

T

hey barely need an introduction. The women of Britain have been lovingly serenaded by this classical-crossover four-piece over the span of six years and three albums. Most of you will be conjuring a similar image — four dashing young men, brown-suited and be-pocketsquared, dropped into a rather blustery beach scene and belting out ‘Yo Te Voy A Amar.’ Prepare to have your dreamy, soft focus scene disrupted. The boys are back with a fourth album, Start Over, but this time there’s a twist. Forget ‘Nessun Dorma’, ‘Nella Fantasia’ or any other crooning of the semi-operatic variety. The Blake boys are treading a new path. One that is modern, catchy and, importantly, of their own choosing. For a start, “We’re never going to wear brown suits again,” says Stephen, “that was somebody else’s idea.” “We were with a major label,” Jules pitches in, “who steered us down a very specific route. We felt we had to live up to the expectations and desires of the product that they were trying to launch. We had to be very ‘on message’.”

“What we are trying to show now, is actually what’s always been there,” adds Humphrey, “that we are young guys, who do have a classical influence, but who have a contemporary taste in music.” So, this latest album is a departure from several things — from their classical vocal quality, from the styling that went with it, and from the label that gave them their big break. “We’ve gone independent,” says Jules, “and it has given us the ability to express ourselves in a way that we are much more comfortable with.” If they’re leaving behind the classics and stepping onto Gary Barlow’s territory, it remains to be seen how they will significantly distinguish themselves from the other big man-bands. “It’s our vocals and harmony that will set us apart,” asserts Humphrey. “We are using four-part harmony,” continues Jules, “in a contemporary setting, with original pop material and actually, that hasn’t been done so much since groups like The Bee Gees and The Beach Boys.” “What we are trying to do,” says Stephen, “is reinterpret what harmony singing is and how it can be used. A lot of the songs wouldn’t sound out of place on a Take That album, but I don’t think even Take

37

Celebrity Scoop That would apply as much vocal harmony as us. That is our unique sound; it’s what we do.” Blake are keen that no member is to become the so-called ‘lead singer’. “That works when you’ve got one really great voice and three not so good ones,” says Humphrey, “or when you have one particularly good-looking person. But we have four equally strong voices and four individually strong characters and I guess we’re all about as good-looking as each other.” It’s all very democratic, you see. The first three albums have seen them attract an astonishing number of female fans. They’ve not quite been of the Beatles-mania variety, but the hysteria levels have been remarkably high nonetheless. You’d think they might be worried that a change in direction would lose them some of the original support. “We have differently aged fans all over the world,” says Stephen, “from 18 through to 80, but a large proportion of them, especially in Britain, are women in their 40s and over.” “A lot of people who bought the first album,” continues Jules, “were about 15 years old in the 1960s, which means they have a wide range of musical tastes. The people who came to hear us sing ‘Nessun Dorma’ were also Beatles fans and fans of music that we are not a million miles away from on this album.” What may surely worry some women, however, is a possible change in tone and theme. These boys have become known as ‘romance’ personified. They are the embodiment of passionate vibrato, intense stares and lyrics about love, lust and how best to cherish a woman. Have no fear, because on this latest album, if you can believe it, the songs have become even more imbued with romantic sentiment. “We Brits can sometimes be a bit cold and calculated when it comes to love and romance,” insists Stephen, “Love is what we all want in our lives. I have a wonderful girlfriend who is incredibly romantic with me and it is what keeps me interested. We may not all experience love all of the time, but these songs inspire us to imagine

38

the thing that we want the most.” “We’ve all been through highs and lows,” continues Jules, “even within the time that we’ve been in the group, but we are all optimists. Some of the songs might touch on heartbreak, but they are largely about being positive and looking forward.” “We are all romantics at heart,” says Humphrey, “Just look at the most successful songs of all time. They are nearly always about love, passion and romance.” With this in mind, it seemed only fitting to ask the boys for their views on just what it takes to master the art of romance in everyday life. “I’m very proud of one particular date,” says Humphrey, “I took her for dinner and then we hopped in my old smashed up Land Rover and headed up to the coast. I filled the whole car with candles and we sat with a blanket over us, eating chocolates and drinking champagne in front of the sea.” “If I could arrange anything, I think my plan would be to get a cable car to the top of Table Mountain in South Africa and have a private dinner at the top. It has a beautiful view,” Jules explains, “That, or I’d take a girl on safari and have dinner under the stars with the roar of a distant lion.” “I actually got married in my early 20s,” reveals Stephen, “When I proposed, it was in the Austrian mountains and I pulled out a ring at the top. I intend to better that some day.” “Actually, you know what,” thinks Stephen suddenly, “I want to go on a date on Virgin Galactic, in space. If this album does really well I’m going to get a ticket to go up there!” So there you have it. They might have had a change of direction, but they sure haven’t had a change of heart. The new album, Start Over, is released on February 11, 2013. Be sure to order your copy in advance! Keep up with all the Blake news at www.blakeofficial.com

“I think fashion is a great way to express your personality through what you are wearing.”

aking the Gulf by storm, the talented fashion designer, Walla is imbued with a passion for her work that is rare to find, and driven by her very own love for the field. With an exclusive clientele, Walla is rapidly expanding the brand through her diffusion range and talks with boutiques in London, Paris, Milan and New York City. The WALLA brand incorporates the designer’s adoration for luxury that introduces traditional Arabian outfits combined with on-season Western influences; an interplay of style and tradition. Inspired by the timeless glamour of vintage fashion, the Autumn Winter collection presents exclusive, high-end pieces created in opulent fabrics. Entering into Walla’s fashion studio is a fasionista’s dream, with rails bursting full of stunning and unique pieces, sumptuous

materials and sketches of beautiful creations laid out on her desk. Ohlala! introduces you to WALLA…

What was your childhood dream? Walla. Since I was very young, my dream has always been to be a fashion designer. I would often draw sketches of women wearing different outfits, or play with Barbies and create outfits for them, and also enjoyed playing dress up. Why fashion design? W. Fashion is what drives me. I can't see myself doing anything else. I think it's a great way to express your personality through what you are wearing.

How did you get from deciding that you wanted to be a fashion designer to actually producing your first collection? W. After graduating from University and having a great fashion show, I knew I could give more, so I completed my first collection and 55

FASHION presented it in Dubai Fashion Week back in 2003. I just started growing slowly from there.

From where do you draw your inspiration? W. My inspirations come from everything around me; sometimes it will be a piece of jewellery, a colourful bird, or a pretty garden while enjoying afternoon tea. What materials do you work with? W. I work with all kinds of materials, but I’ve got to say that lace is one of my favourites; I usually incorporate lace in all my collections. My materials are sourced in Italy or France. I like using only the best. I also really enjoy working with exotic leathers for the couture pieces.

Where is the collection made? W. I do the sample pieces here in my studio in Bahrain as well as bespoke pieces. When I have a large quantity from buyers, we send the technical drawings to our production team in Italy. They usually cut the material then send it here for us to do the embroidery and beading. Then we send it back to complete the production.

How do you design your creations? W. It always starts with ideas in my head from inspirations I see. Then we create a sketch. From that I start playing with material on the mannequin. When I start to design a piece I will always make adjustments and changes, which is usually a pain for the technical drawers and production team, because they can never get a result until the last day before a shoot or a fashion show. Usually a piece will change completely from the first idea. What trends can be seen throughout your Autumn Winter Collection? W. Combining and paneling different materials: Laser-cut, sheer, velvet and metallic leather. Is there one piece that encapsulates who you are as a designer? W. The long black laser-cut leather dress with gold lace is one that translates my brand. It is extravagant yet very chic and elegant.

“The WALLA woman is glamorous and elegant. She stands out from the crowd with her unique, sophisticated and chic sense of style.”

56

Ohlala! I December 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

What is your personal style? W. I am all about glamour, being unique and having my own style to be the centre of attention.

What kind of women buys WALLA creations? W. The WALLA woman is glamorous, elegant, and has a unique style, allowing her to transform from work to play with ease. She stands out from the crowd with her sophisticated and chic sense of style, which she likes to exhibit. Her keen eye for detailed, luxurious and welltailored dresses makes her the centre of attention. She is confident and independent with a strong personality that appreciates fashion and expects nothing but the best. Do you design bespoke pieces? W. Yes, I started out the brand by only creating bespoke pieces. As time passed and I felt I had more to give, so I decided to create the ready-to-wear / couture line.

Which celebrity would you most like to design for and why? W. I would really love to dress Sarah Jessica Parker; she is a fashion icon who loves to take risks, and she turns everything she wears into a trend. What do you keep close to your heart? W. My wonderful family.

Is there anything that you would like to add? W. I would like to thank my family, friends, and everyone that supported me to reach where I am today. I still have so much more to give and will have to work much harder to reach where I want to be. It can be extremely difficult to be a successful fashion brand, but with determination, motivation, and support nothing is impossible.

The Fall Winter 2012 collection can be purchased online at www. wbywalla.com. The Spring Summer 2013 collection will be on display at Saks Fifth Avenue, Bahrain City Centre. 57

Healing From Within Karina Lazarraga talks to one of the island’s best known Reiki masters, Melanie Sarginson, sitting down for an interview and gets an enlightening experience instead. Images by George Mathew

“This is the most rewarding thing I have ever done in my life.”

A

practitioner of Reiki for ten years now, meeting her in person, Melanie’s accepting and calming presence creates the space for self-reflection and healing. So what is Reiki? Reiki is a healing art that originated in Japan developed by Dr Mikao Usui. Reiki works to promote self-healing on all levels — physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual. Melanie’s first encounter with Reiki was due to her need to alleviate the pain she was feeling due to the results of a car accident. “It was what was available at the time and it felt right then. It greatly benefitted me and it has been my way of life since,” she recalls. Melanie first received training in Jikiden Reiki in Bahrain and later went on to train in Japan to further her practice. She has since been bestowed with the title of Shihan, or Master, (a process that took three years) and was given the Jikiden Reiki Institute’s 169th scroll — signifying her official certification. Reiki Masters around the world are given this scroll once they have achieved the level of becoming a Shihan. Melanie shares a metaphor of ‘The Muddy Stream’ often used by one of Reiki’s earliest Shihans, Hayashi Sensei, to best explain how Reiki works: “When you look at the surface of the water it looks clean and clear. However, when you stir it, the mud from the bottom is brought to the surface making the water cloudy and muddy. If you remove the mud floating on the surface, the stream will appear to be clear although some mud will have sunk back down to the bottom. Repeat this process enough times and the muddy stream will eventually be reborn as a clear one. By the same process Reiki stirs and removes toxins from our system. After receiving a Reiki treatment, initially a person’s condition may appear to become worse because the toxins have come to the surface but this should not be seen as a problem. It is merely a part of the natural cleansing process.” Melanie professes that Reiki works wonderfully and speaks of her experiences, “It is a very subtle energy. I started seeing colours so much more vividly. Everything seemed to be greatly enhanced. I love it and I look forward to sharing the experience with others. For me it is the most rewarding thing I have ever done in my life.” What happens in a Reiki session? Melanie explains that each person reacts differently to a Reiki treatment. Some people feel wonderful waves of energy, some feel warm and tingly, some feel nothing at all, or just notice they are relaxed, and others fall asleep. Reiki works by channelling energy to the body to enable it to eliminate toxins. Melanie works by placing her hands on the recipient’s body, and from the sensations she feels on her hands, she is able to gauge how toxic they are. Reiki is a gentle healing therapy which complements medical and other holistic therapies. Apart from providing therapy sessions, Melanie is currently focused on teaching Jikiden Reiki, which involves two levels — Reiki One or Shoden and Reiki Two or Okuden. Jikiden Reiki, Melanie says, hasn’t been ‘diluted’ with other forms of practice and has stayed true since it was rediscovered over 100 years ago. Reiki is now becoming popular within the medical system, and Melanie agrees that this is a great step forward, saying, “I personally believe in this,” adding that it is especially beneficial to anyone who cannot use other methods to help themselves. One of her patients, a lady who suffered tremendous pain from severe whiplash due to a car accident is one of her examples. “I worked on her for two months, once or twice a week. She understood that it wasn’t going to totally eradicate her problem, but Reiki has given her immense relief.” And personally, Melanie attests to the fact that it has really enhanced her life; she tells us beaming, “Your whole outlook on life changes because your compassion is heightened.” So what goals is she setting her eyes on? “Teaching is more my focus, so what I would really love is for everybody to learn Reiki. If a family for example learns Reiki, then parents can apply Reiki and teach it to their children. The children in turn are able to teach their siblings… and so on.” For more details, contact Melanie Sarginson on 3933 0911 or visit www.reikibahrain.com for more information.

Let the Good Times Roll As the festive season rolls around again, it is very easy for weeks, months, or even a year’s worth of hard work to go down the drain if a certain level of order is not maintained. Fitness expert, Craig Bunting, offers some tips on keeping overindulgence under control. 70

Ohlala! I December 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

I

t takes a sustained, high level of effort to burn only two, or three hundred calories. In contrast, you can consume four, five or even ten times more than that in a fraction of the period. The festive season is associated with parties, gatherings, happiness and joy to all; with that often means a lot of high calorie food and beverage choices on offer. This month we’re going to give you some prevention strategies to help you avoid excessive weight gain during the holiday period. Four Top Tips to Avoid the Holiday Bulge

Shorten Your Workouts A great way to maintain exercise adherence is to shorten your workouts to 30 minutes. A 30-minute workout is a lot more attractive to someone who is tired through work, or excessive socialising than a 60 plus minute workout. Make sure that your exercise program consists of effective activities such as interval training, circuits, resistance exercises using super-sets, and most importantly, stretching. Performing a variety of useful exercises will give you the chance to stay on track while all of the external influences around you appear to be working against you! Partner Up It’s no secret that training with a friend or exercise partner can help keep training fun, and relieve tension from the day’s stresses, while providing an opportunity to socialise. It’s very easy to get over not going yourself, if you really don’t want to train after a day’s work; letting down your training partner is a different story. Most of us would have been on both sides of that coin at one time or another in our lives, but having that pressure to stick to your word will help keep you focused and on track.

Self-Control It is really important that you maintain a level of self-control over the festive period. Using a friend or partner to help avoid a lot of potentially dangerous situations is also useful when socialising. You can help encourage each other to stay on track and provide strength in moments of weakness. When you do decide to fall off the wagon, you can also share in the joy of whatever it is you are eating or drinking, but be careful not to use this as a regular excuse. Driving to social events is highly advised. This means that you cannot consume alcoholic bervages, which are useless calories anyway. Alcohol usually leads to poor decision-making and food choices too, so it’s a win-win all round. Reward Yourself Make sure that you enjoy the season and allow yourself some of the pleasures that go along with it. Remember not to go overboard however and limit your indulgence of calorie-ridden items. An even better alternative is treating yourself to a day at the spa, or going shopping with friends, that way you know that your indulgence is of the healthier kind. Maintaining self-control is always key.

Let light shine through your home, especially with the wintry months upon us. This month, Georges Karam talks about lighting fixtures, and how you can set the right ambience for your abode. Co-written by Jenda Dagami, GK&Partners 72

Ohlala! I December 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

L

ighting is about controlling and shaping light and shadows, reflections, refractions and even colour, to set the ambiance of a place, or an event. Every time a light is turned on, a room can come alive in an instant with a unique and lovely glow. Each lamp or lighting fixture should be an object of beauty that lifts your spirits — one that creates a feeling of warmth and provides a joyous mood in this festive period of the year; a time to say goodbye to the year that’s past and to welcome the New Year with style and beauty. All rooms need a variety of lighting: ambient or background lighting, task lighting for close-up work, or accent lighting to highlight special features. Poor lighting can wash out colour

Diffuse

and texture, and make the room look less than ordinary. For example, the use of low voltage lighting systems has become very popular over the past several years. Low voltage halogen and low voltage xenon, or LED lighting systems can be found in almost any setting and are often used by interior designers to enhance and highlight their scheme. These types of lighting systems usually come in the form of cabinet lighting, cove lighting, landscape lighting, picture lights, regular track lighting, flexible track lighting, cable lighting and under cabinet lighting. Table Chandeliers that are often hung over a dining or a central table should be more or less about 25 centimetres narrower than the table on each side. If you go for a crystal chandelier, be aware that grades of crystal vary immensely, so it's important to know your budget before you start shopping. An average crystal chandelier is going to impress almost everybody, but if you have discerning guests that you entertain on a regular basis, or if you are a connoisseur and prefer higher quality items, you might want to look into some higher-end quality crystal chandeliers. To really go over-the-top, you can look into rock crystal chandeliers made of the finest manufactured crystal quartz. Whilst chandeliers made of crystal are by far the most popular use of crystal for lighting solutions, they are by no means your only options. Crystal sconces, crystal candelabras and crystal table lamps can also light up a room and add a sense of style and grace to a living area. Why not show off your unique and creative flair and choose bespoke-made, porcelain chandeliers, such as the one shown in the image. Whatever your inclination, always keep in mind that lighting, either direct or indirect, low voltage or incandescent, should be consistent throughout as well as flattering and must also minimise glare. Equitable lighting across an entire space is recommended and adaptable lighting with a dimmer plays a big part in the total effect. For this time of year, when celebrations and gatherings are on everybody’s mind, the right lighting definitely sets the mood for your dinner parties and get-togethers. Here’s wishing one and all a Happy December and New Year — one that’s full of light and glory! Maserati GranTurismo Sport 2013

I

’m in love… But I have to confess that I have a bias towards Italian sports cars. They just have that stylish wow-factor that many others try to imitate, some succeeding better than others. As soon as you get into the GranTurismo Sport, you feel that you’re stepping into a dreamy movie from the 1960s, romantically cruising down the winding mountain roads with the lovely deep blue Mediterranean Sea glittering ahead of you… So does that reverie translate into reality in the Gulf, and does it translate today? Certainly the Maserati GTS, as it is also known, is a dream to drive — absolute beauty, power and speed, perfectly combined in an elegant Italian package. With the GTS, Maserati’s glorious past is translated into 2013 with panache. Undeniably, the GranTurismo Sport is one of the most beautiful cars — inside and out — on the market today. The exterior look is sportily aggressive but not overly so. It also has an air of striking, voluptuous chic about it. It definitely attracts attention and opens the fast lane when you hit the highway. Inside, you are greeted by a luxurious mix of leather, wood and metal. You can personalise your GTS with a plethora of options to tailor the exterior, interior and the driving dynamics to your exact liking. And of course, the infotainment systems are up to the level of today’s requirements and expectations of a car in this segment. The model that I had the pleasure to experience came fitted with two buttons for changing the gears instead of a traditional stick gearshift (which is also an available option if you wish). The two buttons, one with number ‘1’ on it and the other with letter ‘R’, are found where you would normally find the gear stick. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that ‘1’ means drive and ‘R’ means reverse. You have three driving modes to choose from: Automatic, Automatic Sport and Manual Sport, which you control from buttons on the centre console. The Automatic mode is perfect for every day city driving with creamy smooth handling. Changing to Sport mode, the suspension and gear changes are calibrated for maximum performance and it wakes up the engine noise as the exhaust valves open up. The real roaring sounds are achieved with the Manual Sport mode. I put the skills that I learned from the Ferrari F1 test drivers to use with the Manual Sport mode. Changing the gears with the paddle shifts is so much fun and seeing heads turn on the sidewalks with the bellowing sounds from under the bonnet is enough to get the adrenaline pumping and make any sports car junkie happy. The GTS is powered by a 4.7-litre Ferrari derived V8 engine with up to 454 horse powers; capable of catapulting the car from zero to 100-kilometres an hour in 4.8-seconds. Lovely! Both active and passive safety systems employ the latest safety

technology available in the motoring field. Among the many systems, it comes standard fitted with stability and traction controls, ABS and hydraulic braking assistance, parking sensors, tyre pressure monitoring systems, a series of airbags and many more. Child seat anchors are also built-in on the back seats for the benefit of those with young offspring. Talking of which, you can actually fit bigger kids (and adults) on the back seats quite comfortably without having to chop off their legs like in some other supposedly fourseater GTs. The Maserati GranTurismo Sport is a fantastic choice for sports car loving ladies. Its effortless style and poise, as well as the ease and excitement of driving, will surely satisfy even the most demanding diva. Assolutamente perfetto as they say in Italy…

A Journey in History

Have you been to Jordan? Not yet? Well, it's you’re missing out because since old times, prophets and many civilisations have visited Jordan, and some have lingered. They built temples, churches, mosques, theatres, castles and many more things to explore‌ Images & words by Aqeel Al Mosawi & Hussain Al Sairafi

elive history by trekking in old settlements and explore the religions that have shaped the region. Jordan's topography is amazing for nature lovers. Irrespective of your faith, an hour trip from Amman can take you to religious wonders. Visit Mount Nepo where Prophet Moses stood and viewed the Holy Land. Continue eastward and, like popes and many millions of Christian pilgrims, visit the site where Jesus was baptised by John the Baptist at Bethany Beyond the Jordan. On your way back to Amman, stop at Ma'adaba and visit St George's Greek Orthodox Church. The church is small but contains a remarkable mosaic map, dating from 560 AD, which portrays the entire ancient Holy Land; one of the earliest maps in human history made of mosaic. As you wander in the church around the map, orient yourself correctly because the top of the map is East from where the sun shines, not North. The small town is a workshop of mosaics. All souvenir shops are filled with different mosaics and handcrafts. For a few dinars, you can take a piece of that town with you. In their golden times in the third century, Nabataeans controlled part of modern day Jordan. Unlike Romans, they were great stone carvers not builders. They carved the stone mountains into livable cities. The best of their artwork is at Petra. Allow a full day to explore the large stone city, along with a good trekking stamina and expect to ride on donkeys, camels and horses to do your exploring. Walk down the Siq in the afternoon to appreciate the colours of the rock formations.

Nabataeans couldn't stop the ambitions of the Romans from conquering the region and adding it to their empire in the fifth century. In Amman, Romans built the temple of Hercules on the highest hill. Nowadays, it is called the Citadel. A large part of Amman can be viewed from above there, but the best part is that of the Roman Ampitheatre. The sheer size of it highlights the cultural complexity of Roman life. Yet, this is not the best Roman building in Jordan. Jarash is the grand formal provincial Roman urbanism found in the Middle East. It has colonnaded streets, elegant theaters, temples, and spacious public squares. Don't miss a souvenir picture of Hadrian's Arch at the entrance of the old city. Jarash can be done as a day trip from Amman. Following the Muslims' conquest of the Levant region in the seventh century, Jordan was quiet but a prosperous province during the Ummayad and Abbasid dynasties. When Crusaders made their way to Jerusalem in the early eleventh century, Jordan became the war grounds. Saladin built many castles for his long-term wars against crusaders. Karak castle is one of these that you can visit in Jordan. It is located south of Amman, on the way to Petra. Karak is like all medieval castles, set on top of a hill for military advantage. In Karak, view the valleys in the West and imagine how Saladin awaited the crusaders' army to leave Jerusalem before he beat them in the famous battle of Hittin. 78

“You can sleep in a tent, drink Arabic coffee and listen to an Oud player at night. Simply, you can live like Lawrence of Arabia for a day or two. From the fifteenth century, like all Arab worlds, Jordan became part of the Ottoman Empire. In WWII Arabs sided with the allied countries and revolted against the Ottomans. Lawrence of Arabia, the English officer, led the Arab forces and did the unthinkable by moving an army through the desert, crossed Wadi Rum and attacked the Ottoman garrison in Aqaba. In his book 'Seven Pillars of Wisdom', Lawrence describes the Arabian desert and Wadi Rum. Nowadays, one doesn't need an army, nor Lawrence's book, to enjoy the desert. Bedouins can take you on a fourwheel drive, or a stylish camel to the heart of Wadi Rum. You can sleep in a tent, drink Arabic coffee and listen to an Oud player at night. Simply, you can live like Lawrence for a day or two. Nothing has really changed since his time. As a souvenir, buy a coloured sand bottle from the Bedouins. When you are finally in Aqaba enjoy a walk by the sea like the locals, or maybe take a glass-bottom boat ride in the Gulf of Aqaba. You can see houses in Elat on the Israeli side. Diving in the Red Sea is a must for all certified divers. Don't miss it and allow a few extra days for that experience. While you can dive in the Red Sea, you can only float in the Dead Sea. The thick syrup-like salty water is an amazing phenomenon. Be careful though, not to get any water drops in your eyes, otherwise a red eye is going to be your souvenir.

mpressive is the word that first comes to mind when you walk into the Kempinski’s Saveur restaurant for the Friday Family Brunch. The chic interior features marble and frosted glass, decked with solid wood and glass tables, and plush, silverblue velvet seating; giving off an air of real class. Emanating a soulful vibe, the crooning of the two-piece band (singer and guitarist), throughout the afternoon, perfects the setting. A glorious wealth of cuisine elegantly laid out towards the back of the dining area will certainly set your mouth watering in anticipation. There are various cooking stations to enjoy; you’ll be spoilt for choice with the carvery, BBQ grill, tempura fryer, Asian steamer, homemade pasta station, and fresh fish cooked to your liking, in addition of course, to the main counters, salad bar, bread station, soups, sushi bar, kids station, desserts and chocolate bar. With so much to choose from, it’s hard to decide what to start with, but we settled on a light Pumpkin and Orange soup; a combination of delicate flavours with a hint of lemon grass, and served with apple beignets. The hors d'oeuvres were next on our dining journey; each is a perfect embodiment of fine dining, it’s clear that much thought goes into the preparation. Notable favourites comprise of the light and tangy, Lemongrass Marinated Scallops, with a meltin-the-mouth texture, and served with a crunchy Asian Salad to complement. Mussels with Sauce Vierge were another hit, tender and flavoursome. Also worth a mention are the delectable Beef Carpaccio with rucola and parmesan shavings, and the Duck Rilette with a unique apricot Kumquat Compote. Of the live cooking stations, the Asian Counter was most desired, particularly the assorted dim sum, freshly steamed and served with chili soy sauce (great if you like fiery hot food), or sweet chili sauce and regular soy sauce. Must-try dishes include the fruity, Sweet and Sour Hammour, with fresh capsicum, spring onion and pineapple, and the signature Peking Duck Rolls, wrapped in rice paper, complemented with crunchy vegetables, and a rich plum sauce, which sets off the dish. A carnival of mains will really satiate your appetite. We sampled the Seared Sherri with coriander puree and black olive sauce; a delightful soft flaky fish with sundried tomatoes, as well as the lightly spiced Thai Fish Cake in a red curry sauce, and the Oxtail Ravioli in truffle jus and braised root vegetables. Not only do the dishes look extremely appetising but the taste is divine. Meat lovers will enjoy the Herb Crusted Lamb Rack, an ideal combination of textures, and the succulent Veal Medallions with Foie Gras and mushroom crust, which fall apart in your mouth. If you still have room for more, we suggest indulging your inner child with the chocolate fountain — a hit among children and adults alike. A traditional dessert, the warm Apple Crumble is good comfort food, and the chocolate Crème Brulee offers a unique twist on this infamous dish. An added bonus of brunching at Kempinski is their Camelo Kids’ Club; a safe place for your children to be entertained with educational toys and crafts, looked after by trusted hoteliers, leaving you time to relax.

Afterwards, why not head up to the Pool Terrace, complimentary for all brunchers, where you can sip on pleasant beverages ‘al fresco’ and watch the sun go down. With such an abundance of tantalising cuisine, it’s impossible to cover everything on paper, so you’ll just have to visit the Kempinski Grand & Ixir’s Saveur to discover the delights of the Friday Family Brunch for yourself. En Guete!

Churrasco Picanha with Chimichurri Salsa Ingredients (Serves 6) 1kg Beef Picanha (cap of rump) Garlic paste Rock salt Black pepper from the mill 1/2 cup Parsley, chopped 4 Garlic cloves, finely sliced 1 Shallot, chopped 1tsp Red chili, Chopped 1 Yellow bell pepper in small cubes 1/3 cup Hot water 2/3 cup Red vinegar 1/2 cup Olive oil 2pcs Bay leaves, finely chopped Oregano, thyme, paprika and salt to season

Method Cut the picanha into two-inch pieces, marinate with salt, pepper and garlic paste. Arrange the meat on the skewer and grill on very slow heat to your preference, while turning it regularly. Start slicing off the outer layers and put the inner, rarer meat back to the grill for more cooking. For the sauce, mix all ingredients and season to taste. Place overnight in the refrigerator and take out one hour before usage in order to reach room temperature. Executive Chef Alfred Zuberbühler Appointed executive chef at the Moevenpick Hotel Bahrain in February 2012, Chef Alfred Zuberbühler has more than 25 years of work experience in the hospitality industry in Switzerland and around the world. Ohlala! Stars

Giovanni unveils your future for December… Happy Birthday Ms Sagittarius! Your usually bubbly nature is somewhat subdued this month as you find your thoughts distracted by other more pressing issues, many of which relate to relationships and the stresses of work. Those of you who are going through a sticky time emotionally would probably do best to think about sitting down with a loved one or partner in an effort to resolve longstanding problems that appear to have now grown beyond your control. Additionally, if you are struggling with pressures at work then sit down with your superior and get the matter resolved. You don’t usually suffer fools gladly but you appear to have taken your eye off the ball of late. If you want to enjoy your birthday month and also the approaching festive season then don’t put things off any longer!

Nov 22 – Dec 21

Sagittarius — at a glance

Generally lucky by nature, Sagittarians usually demonstrate a cheerful and positive disposition and it takes a lot to bring them down. Being so optimistic makes them genuinely nice people to be around. With curious and enquiring minds, their focus is often on what is happening tomorrow rather than today and that can sometimes make them a little frustrating to deal with. They thrive in a state of constant change and transition and are fiercely independent. On the flip side, they don’t hold secrets and can be quite straightforward with their talking, so they can often ruffle feathers as they do not always act with diplomacy. They are also verbose to the point of being annoying and can be awfully pushy when they want their own way. Their changeable nature also means they have a problem with commitment, which makes relationships difficult and gives them an often cavalier and careless attitude to life.

Aquarius (January 20 – February 18) Your thoughts around this time of year are naturally occupied by a loved one who is far from home but though you might have concerns, you can be comforted by the fact that are in safe hands and enjoying themselves. On the home front, the festive season may bring some challenges for you to overcome in relation to family disputes meaning you cannot enjoy the holiday with everyone under the same roof. However, there is every chance that a little simple diplomacy on your part will sort everything out ahead of the big day. Just employ some wisdom at the right moment. Aries (March 20 – April 19) This month is going to be a period of immense celebration and rewarding times spent with loved ones and friends, and you will not only better organised but also have much more time to relax and enjoy the festive season. On the work front, a project for the New Year is going to be presented to you around December 27 and you will be full of excitement at the opportunities this presents. Just don’t get too carried away as there is only so much of tomorrow you should be worrying about when you still have ‘today’ to deal with.

GEMINI (May 21 – June 20) For many of you looking to move home or finalise your plans ahead of a career move in the New Year, the last few weeks of 2012 could end up being quite frantic and you may find yourself tied up with work until the very last day before the holidays. There could be some wisdom in delaying matters until early January but knowing your generally impatient nature, this seems unlikely. Therefore, if you pass through the holidays without actually feeling like you have relaxed at all then there’s no one to blame but yourself this time around. LEO (July 23 – August 22) There is clearly something on your mind this month and it could have something to do with your suspicions concerning a relationship. Your sign is not normally known for its fidelity if opportunity arises but at the same time this also makes you better equipped than most to realise when someone is not being completely faithful to you. A discovery around December 15 is going to surprise you and force an open confrontation that just might get messy. How this is going to impact on your month remains unclear at the moment but the omens aren’t brilliant!

116

Libra September 23 – October 22 No one would blame you for thinking the world has been plotting against you of late so you won’t get any accusations of paranoia cast in your direction if you start to plead your case for some change in fortunes this month. The good news is that you will have plenty of reasons to celebrate before December is over. However, a lot of this will be down to the efforts of a parent and you should quickly acknowledge their assistance because without it, you might not be enjoying the benefits coming your way.

Ohlala! I December 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

Capricorn (December 22 – January 19) You will have a lot to celebrate this month as you embrace the festive season with an enthusiasm and desire that has been lost from you of late. Much of this has to do with a renewed sense of confidence and a new romantic interest that will lift your spirits. Those around you will notice the change and it will have a positive knock-on effect in other areas. Just ensure that you take things slowly if a relationship does start to develop. The last thing you want to appear is desperate! Pisces (February 19 – March 19) This time of year is all about getting together with loved ones but something you have said has caused offence because you are certainly not the ‘flavour of the month’ presently. You can be quite cavalier with your language on occasion and it might be something you didn’t think was upsetting that has been taken the wrong way. Address the matter quickly, to prevent a trivial mistake from escalating into something much bigger.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20) It’s fair to say that you have gone through a fairly turbulent year and as 2012 draws to a close you can look back on the period and give yourself a hefty pat on the back because despite all the obstacles and challenges, you’ve certainly achieved a lot more than you realise. Good news will reach you around December 13 and you could even find yourself planning a trip overseas for the New Year as a consequence. You’ve a lot to look forward to, so get ready for a positive turnaround in your life because it starts now.

Cancer (June 21 – July 22) Many of you could enter the festive period with a great deal of optimism after hearing some good news regarding an illness. Clearly your mood has been dominated by perceptions of the outcome and this will certainly put you at ease. For those of you who made a rash decision involving a parent, the outlook this month may not be quite so positive, and you only have yourself to blame for this. If you can swallow your pride and apologise, then you could still salvage the situation, but you have to be quick if you still want to feature in their plans.

Virgo (August 23 — September 22) The end to your year is going to provide you with a wonderful experience, especially if you are celebrating the season in a new location. The signs suggest that a few of you will be far from those you love and whilst this is going to leave you with a feeling of sadness, it will be compensated by the promise of a fresh romance. Where this leads remains unclear but rather than focus on the future just enjoy the moment for what it is. December 18 to 31 is likely to be a high point of your month and you may even come into a little luck before the year is out that you can take with you into 2013!

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21) Love is in the air and in quite a big way, as that huge grin on your face will testify to this month. Everyone is going to notice it so there’s no sense in hiding it (not that you are). There is a feeling about you that suggests this could be different to some of the romances you’ve enjoyed before and there is every chance this could develop into something very serious, very quickly over the coming weeks. Usually a sign to play it cautiously, this looks like the first time in ages you might actually let your hair down! It’s going to be an eye-opener for everyone!

“Monumental things. That’s just how we operate.”

I

’m on a plane. En route to Dubai after almost a month of New York City, Los Angeles, Miami, presidential elections, memorable forums, marvellous galas, random ‘Bond’ nights, momentary shopping and unexpected hurricanes. T’was an interesting time, with many, many wondrous moments. Some of which were mildly aggravated by this American school of thought that tips are somehow compulsory? (Sorry, but I need to talk about this for just a minute). As far as I know, the concept of tipping is based on choice. When did so many waiters come to the conclusion that it was ever some kind of mandatory obligation? I am not to blame for your Government/boss’ decisions to keep you on minimum wage. Nope. Not me. Not the one. Rant over. Back to the moments… Sandy decided to unleash her wrath during my time in the Big Apple. That wasn’t so fun. I did see large chunks of NYC in complete darkness though. Very ‘I Am Legend’. A bit surreal. Brooklyn's energy, always on point. Halloween was taken VERY seriously. Costumes and dancing amidst natural disasters. Commendable spirits. Finally got my nails done by the city’s Naomi (I did wait, quite some time, for this glorious occasion). Loved the Angel Ball. And my Orkalia gown. And Denise Rich. And my friends. And Smokey Robinson. And Natalie Cole. And Ms Mama Knowles. And Solange's dress. And the boom boom room. Grateful to The Mark Hotel — turned Sandy refugee camp — for such a wonderful stay. LA was LA Crazy, relaxed, random, same same, fun, yet dull, beautiful, and ugly (not many places can do all this at the same time). Went to Inglewood. Joined the cast of ‘ABG’ on filming of their last ever episode. That… was just… excellent. London pride on the debut of Kesh's photo exhibition. Also, brilliant. One’s Hollywood abode remained as gorgeous as it always is. The marquis, I thank you. My one stand with Miami did not include South Beach. Yes... shocking I know, considering the infamously ratchet environment. I was

actually there for ABC’s Continuity Forum, which took place at Coconut Grove’s Ritz Hotel. A gathering of social entrepreneurs from across the Americas intermingled with an impressive mix of investors and global experts, all with a common purpose to conscientiously innovate. Environmentally expand. aomi Humanitarianly (is that a word?) harness ous N notori e business opportunity for the greater good… h t esy of you should catch my drift at this point. Court ames: g l i a N Saudi's Prince Fahd Al Saud joined forces with the ever-inspiring Emmanuel Jal during the forum’s cultural session, an enlightening and never-before-seen pairing of Africa and Arabia. The two young leaders shared on common challenges when it comes to community development in their home regions. They drew upon similarities in tribal lifestyle, and shed light on the importance of technology when relating to youth generations. Monumental things. That’s just how we operate. Onto 2013.
