From the Heart s we were sending Ohlala! to press, the news came out about the tragic catastrophe at Villagio Mall… which sent shivers down our spines. It is deeply saddening that such a disastrous event could occur, and so close to home… Many of us have children of our own, so holding back the tears and clutching onto our babies a little tighter, we feel the pain of those who lost their loved ones, but can’t even begin to imagine what they must be going through. It’s truly heartbreaking. This devastation has profoundly affected, not only Qatar, but the surrounding region; it has made people stop and reassess their lives. It serves as a reminder that our life on earth is a fragile existence; that we need to live every moment as if it is our last; that we need to cherish that which is genuinely valuable to us, and offer our love unconditionally. No words can express that which can only truly be felt… but our hearts and minds go out to all those who are mourning. We are praying for you.

Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there, I do not sleep I am a 1,000 winds that blow I am the diamond glints on snow I am the sun on ripened grain I am the gentle autumn rain When you awaken in the morning's hush I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled light I am the soft star that shines at night Do not stand at my grave and cry I am not there; I did not die. M

ilan’s via Montenapoleone store hosted the peaceful invasion of Louis Vuitton’s imaginary “Arc”. For Salone del Mobile 2012, dozens of fantastic animals, created with Louis Vuitton small leather accessories by the British artist Billie Achilleos, were the protagonists of a special exhibition to celebrate the Maison’s iconic savoir-faire. Starting from Louis Vuitton small leather accessories, Billie Achilleos created bizarre creatures inspired to the world of animals: beaver, armadillo, chameleon, grasshopper, squirrel, cat, owl, frog, snake, crab, duck, rooster and many others, to pay homage to the Maison’s savoir-faire and craftsman tradition, which since more than 100 years gives birth to fine and original accessories. The artist’s creations once again endorse the relationship, so fond to Louis Vuitton, between the traditional craftsmanship, which dates back to 1854 and contemporary art. “I am the sort of person who sees pictures in the clouds in the sky or in the bubbles inside the bathtub”, says Billie Achilleos. “I often see faces in the wallpaper’s flowers. When I started working on this project I stepped into a Louis Vuitton store looking for animals on the bags, as if they were already there, and it was just a question of opening my eyes to realise that a Damier Graphite key-ring actually was a beaver’s paw. Or that another accessory in Monogram canvas was actually the leg of a grasshopper. There’s no prearranged pattern,” she promises. “One moment there are a stack of bags or small leather objects in front of me, some hours later there’s a frog.” Although she graduated at Wimbledon College of Art in 2007, Billie Achilleos denies being an artist. “I make things that are difficult to classify,” she says plainly. “Light, amusing and a little strange.” Her creations are deliberately eclectic, from origami flowers as decorations for a luxury hotel to theatre puppets. In 2010 she imagined some 20 animals for Louis Vuitton, all of them made with small leather accessories, closed in glass jars and exhibited in the windows of London’s New Bond Street Maison. An owl, a rabbit, a rooster, a python… her fantastic creatures are presented by Louis Vuitton in New York on 5th Avenue.

“Light, amusing and a little strange.”

The Look

This look just works. Pauline has nailed the art of combining the perfect amount of accessories with an outfit that just screams uber-cool. The blazer adds a touch of elegant chic to the skinny jeans, while the heeled boots add that extra height. Topped off with the simple hairstyle, the sunglasses add that sexygeek look that is SO in this season.

Pauline’s Favourites… Brand: Massimo Dutti and Zara Buy: Wide pleated black trousers from Zara Trend: Patterns, pleats and mint green! Celebrity: I don't really have one, I'm not very "starstruck" Destination: The Maldives

Accessories

The best thing about this look is that every accessory compliments each other. The yellow nail varnish adds a touch of colour, while the necklace draws your eyes to look at her whole body. The clutch is over-sized, another trend to look out for this season, and the bracelet is understated yet effective.

What’s What Zara de Haldevang

What’s What from Deputy Editor, Zara de Haldevang.

I

’m really not very good at goodbyes. I don’t think I would classify myself as a “cry baby” but I am definitely one to shed a tear or two for the things that truly matter. Last month I had to bid farewell to my sister Alicia. Having lived here for two years, she now embarks on a Masters at UCL — great news for her but after spending six years of school, three years of University and a year in Bahrain together, it will be somewhat of a weird transition to get used to. Talking of goodbyes, so many people seem to have left the island, whether they are off for early summer holidays or perhaps starting new chapters in their lives, you can safely say that life in the Gulf is never boring. So many fresh faces are popping up all over the place and I am looking forward to getting to know a lot of fresh faces over the next few months. But life moves on, and for many of us, time has a wicked way of taking over. I for one cannot believe that June is already here and the team is looking as full as ever. Starting this month we say hello to Alex MacDonald, our pretty enthusiastic student who is interning with us until September! Having never been to Bahrain before, I am sure Alex will be raring to go and keen to learn as much as possible about our little island. June in a Nutshell Now that summer is very much upon as, the party scene is definitely cooling down

28

Ohlala! I June 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

Quote of the Month “The safest principle through life, instead of reforming others, is to set about perfecting yourself”

but by no means stopping! Although beach parties may be slowly winding down as the temperature on our desert island heats up, we’re still looking forward to the weekends. One event I really want people to get down to is the “Have You. Need You” exhibition at Al Riwaq Art Space, which is showcasing Perryhan El-Ashmawi’s incredible work. Only 24, Perry is one of the most talented artists I have met on the island and her pieces really do deserve some serious credit. One that I absolutely LOVE is her “Man’s Best Friend” piece, check it out on the right. For more news on events and competitions check out our Facebook and Twitter pages, and if you want to get yours featured, drop us an email on events@ohlala-magazine.com. That’s me for now!

Leading Ladies

THE CAUSE

If we all take a long, hard look at our lives, we realise how much of our existence lies on the work and accomplishments of our elders. Zara de Haldevang talks to May Yateem, the Chairperson of The Committee of Young Ladies, about her newest venture, the importance of family and the hopes of things to come. Image by George Mathew

The History The Bahrain Young Ladies’ Association (BYLA) was founded in 1955 with the aim of eliminating women’s illiteracy and empowering them in their communities. This was the first women’s association of its kind in Bahrain and in the whole of the Arabian Peninsula. Starting out in 1998 as just a small office, the Aisha Yateem Centre was affiliated to the BYLA and named after its late influential and beloved founder. The office was at the BYLA headquarters and provided legal, social and psychological counsel to distressed or abused women. The centre, with the help of a royal land grant and funding from both the BYLA and Yateem family, moved to Hamad Town five years ago and continues with its mission to provide aid to abused women, physically and mentally, and members of their family. Acting as branch of the Aisha Yateem Family Counselling Centre is The Committee of Young Ladies, a group of women who are dedicated to truly making a difference in the Kingdom. The Committee is barely four months old, yet is already making a name for itself across the country. The Committee There are currently 14 ladies on the Committee, all of whom are in their early to late 20s: May Yateem, Muna Yateem, Fatima Juma, Dana Al Kooheji, Summer Fakhro, Aysha Fakhro, Sarah Fakhro, Sara Turki, Aysha Almoayyed, Sarah Samiey, Hana Tawfeeqi, Tala Bashmi, Huda Bushehri, and Maria Lias. With a wealth of young women, of which many are related, it is clear to see that the importance of family rings true in every area of this Committee.

The Inspiration May Yateem tells us that her inspiration comes from two great women. “Aisha Yateem, my grandmother, and Layla Al Bassam. Both women were brought together by a common interest: helping women in need. Together they were able to build the Centre we know today. For a while, starting our own committee was just an idea, but Layla gave us the encouragement we needed to finally begin — she has been a great mentor.” Aims and Hopes The Committee’s main focus is to raise awareness to a wider demographic on the topic of female abuse in Bahrain. May says, “We hope that by raising awareness, the women who are stuck in bad family situations will reach out to the centre and seek the help that they need. We aim to help in any way that we can.” As well as emotional and physical support, the centre also offers methods that can improve the women’s future, such as basic computer training, so the women can learn skills that may enable them to find a job. They also aim to introduce other types of classes such as Art and Design. The Centre is hoping that the Committee can raise enough money to enable it to finally open up their temporary housing for abused women. Despite the fact that the facilities have been ready for some time, the financial burden of the upkeep has been too much for the Centre to afford.

Events April marked the first event for the Committee of Young Ladies. April 14 played host to an evening dedicated to raising money and awareness on the issue of women’s abuse to a younger crowd. As well as asking for Arabic book donations for the Centre’s library, the event raised BD4,000. From its success, the Committee is hoping to hold several more charity events like it this year, such as a women’s soccer tournament, a Ramadan Ghabga and perhaps others. With its 32

Ohlala! I June 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

previous event only taking a month’s worth of planning, who knows what else these fourteen dedicated women can do.

May’s Advice From her experience of dedicating her life to helping other women and their families, May offers the following advice to all: “Take your time before jumping into marriage. A woman really needs to know the man she’s about to marry BEFORE the marriage.” And why is this? “I believe by doing this it will reduce the amount of women getting stuck in abusive relationships.” To get involved please contact the Aisha Yateem Family Counselling Centre on 1743 0488.

Tribal Trinkets A mutual love of travelling, cultures and tribal jewellery lead sisters Zena Baroudi and Ghada Yared to launch their own jewellery company, Zena Baroudi Jewellery, in 2004 and the two haven’t looked back since the first piece was created. Our necklaces feature exclusive designs, sturdy construction, unusual finishes and exceptional choices in materials. Our collection is characterised by wonder contrasts, and an unusual mix of cultures, so that our customers can then enjoy the feeling of possessing a oneof-a-kind ornament. We don’t make special orders but we have very special clients.” And future plans for the duo? “We aim to create pieces for the woman that expects the unexpected, values artistic flair and never settles for the ordinary,” says Zena, who hand makes every single piece to the last detail. The two are exceptionally proud of their work so far and so they should be. “What do we love most about our work? Style, soul, and history, all in a single piece of adornment.”

ebanese siblings Zena and Ghada started out studying business administration and law respectively before branching out into the world of jewellery and design. “Back in 2004, we created a line of exclusive handmade jewellery, with myself as the designer and Ghada handling the managing and marketing,” says the 45 year-old jeweller. “I also have a background in interior design, which I studied in Paris, and creative pursuits have always played a major role in my life. A love for travel and a lifelong fascination for old tribal jewellery then led to a passion for designing one-of-a-kind contemporary pieces. Women are the designer’s biggest inspiration when it comes to creating each individual piece, and the history of the materials used. “The impetus and inspiration for my creations come from the fascinating history and stories behind the gemstones, beads, amulets, pendants, and other relics from various ages, cultures, and religions.” The handcrafted necklaces are unique statement pieces, which have been snapped up by jewellery lovers worldwide. “Our handcrafted necklaces are all one-of-a-kind treasures which individuals around the world purchase to wear, and also as collector pieces.” The creations are made using semi-precious stones as well as silver or copper, a variety of rare woods, seeds, antique fabrics and Ottoman elements, Murano glass, braided leather bands and skillfully hand-weaved silk and cotton threads. The pairs’ work has seen them participate in international fairs in Paris, namely Bijorhca Eclat de Mode and Maison et Objet, and for the last four years, Zena Baroudi Jewellery has been on display at Beirut National Museum. The

Fantastic Four

It’s unusual to find the senior management of any establishment to be dominated by women, let alone an all-female team. Ohlala! celebrates woman power at the British School of Bahrain with the current Heads of Infants, Juniors, Seniors and School all being of the fairer sex. Zara de Halvevang talks to Julie Anne Gilbert, Lisa Atkins, Dr Joan O’Brien and Karen Moffat to find out about the secrets behind this extraordinary force of four. Images by George Mathew

36

Ohlala! I June 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

How long have you been working at BSB? Joan: Nine years Julie Anne: Eight years Lisa: Four years Karen: Three years

What brought you all to Bahrain? Karen: That’s complicated as we have been here longer than that! Actually Julie Anne was brought up in Bahrain… Julie Anne: I grew up in Awali and there was no secondary school in Bahrain back then, so I used to come back every holiday. This was always home and when I got married I came back, and that was 18 years ago! Karen: There was certainly no City Centre — Bahrain has changed a lot since then! Joan: I was in Saudi Arabia a long time ago for four and a half years. I have been in Bahrain for 13. Karen: A common factor for all of us is that we all worked at St. Christopher’s School. Julie Anne: But we didn’t all know each other then as we were in different departments. Lisa: I came here with my husband in 2001 and planned to stay here for two years, then travel further east, but we liked it and ended up having two children here. Karen: I came here in 2001, left again for five years then came back. The three of you all have children at BSB but my children are all grown up living over in the UK. Julie Anne: I have three children in this school and actually the reason we moved to the BSB as a family was because this was the school I wanted for my children. Karen: Julie Anne always calls this school the “best kept secret in Bahrain”.

Could you explain more about the school itself? Karen: There are 1460 students and the interesting thing is that it goes from age three up to 18, which is quite unusual because many British schools are not all the way through. For us that is a very special part of the school and of this leadership team because the four of us run the whole school, where three are Heads of separate divisions. We meet once a week and run the school together. I think its very unusual that we have such a strongly collaborative leadership team. We come from four different decades and there are a lot of differences between us! We all have a passion for education, kids and for creating a really unique environment here in Bahrain. In 2003 it was a very small school in comparison and that has been one of the hallmarks of the BSB, that it has grown exponentially. All three divisions became one again on this site about three years ago. This team has been in charge of running the school into its next development. We had our quality assurance review a few weeks ago and had a very positive result. It’s tribute to the staff here for all their hard work and excellent leadership. What would you say is the most rewarding aspect of working with children? Julie Anne: Seeing them develop into happy, confident and independent learners when they are little; and feeling secure as individuals but also feeling very much part of a larger group, such as the classroom or school communities. Lisa: The confidence really comes through in the

Junior school and with that confidence they take risks in a safe environment. We give them lots of opportunities to succeed and share their triumph with others. Joan: When the students come in Year Seven, some are timid and quiet children, and you can see how they change — how articulate, compassionate and confident they become. To see the development of the human being that goes forward on to the next stage is the most rewarding. Karen: Every school is a world of its own. One of the things that is very precious to us is that the children feel happy, secure and safe here. Lisa always says, “Happy students, happy teachers, happy parents!” We put an emphasis on achievement here, whether it is personal or educational. We push kids to be critical thinkers but at the same time they are not aware they are learning as they are enjoying it so much. The measure of a school is the kind of human being that walks out of the gates. Lisa: As the school expands, we still want to maintain that duty of care. The teachers here know the children very well and through that relationship we can make sure that the children are well-rounded from the Infants right through to the Seniors. Did you find it difficult as a female to succeed in your career? Julie Anne, Lisa and Joan: No! Karen: I will say that I do believe that women have it tougher to succeed in the world. When I was coming up the ranks in education, senior management teams tended to be male dominated. You would be passed over for a promotion because a man applied. I do think it is very unusual anywhere to have an all female management team in a school and I am very proud of that. Women have management skills that are very good in terms of collaboration, there is no ego or competition involved! It’s not just about gender — if you are good at what you do, you will succeed. We are here because of merit, each one of us has had a great professional career and we haven’t got to these positions because we are women. The fact that we have, has had a positive impact on the school. I am all for Girl Power! Lisa: I would say it is hard when you are a mother. Women get to a certain point after putting 10 to 12 years in their career and they then step out to look after their children. Karen: We need to pay a tribute to all of our husbands as they have been very understanding, long supportive and suffering. Our rocks are our PAs who also have equally demanding personal lives.

What advice would you give to other women? Lisa: Find your passion and channel all your determination and all your work into that one direction. Never accept being mediocre in any area of your life. Julie Anne: Find a job you love. Joan: If working with children is something you enjoy, there is no better job in the world. Find what you enjoy the most. Karen: Joseph Campbell always said “follow your bliss”. Find what makes you happy and what you can be passionate about and then you can be content. Be proud of what you do.

Embracing Motherhood

When classical singer Natasha Marsh discovered she was having twins it came as a bit of a surprise to the international opera star. She talks to Ben Whittaker about how motherhood has changed her life and career.

“Being a full time mum is probably the most exhausting thing I’ve ever done but it is also the most rewarding.

39

Celebrity Scoop lassical music has become ever more popular and the crossover success of artists from the Three Tenors to Katherine Jenkins has seen sales and public interest grow significantly over the last two decades. Established talent Natasha Marsh talkes about how her career and being a young mother has changed her outlook to life and music. Born in Wales in 1975, Natasha and her family moved to Oxfordshire where she spent most of her life. “My parents aren’t actually Welsh,” she says. “My dad was head of music at a school in Wales but we moved from there when I was young. I guess his profession had a profound impact on the eventual career path I took in life, although music has always been very important to me. My playlist was everything from Pink Floyd to Mozart so I had the widest possible exposure to music. “I started having professional lessons and people began to tell me that my voice had real potential. Then I had an audition at the Royal College of Music and really never looked back.” In 2006 Natasha signed an exclusive recording contract with EMI Classics and the first album release on the label, Amour, went straight to number one in the UK Classical Artist Charts. “It includes some of my favourite songs and it was amazing to have it nominated as Best Album the following year at the Classical BRITs,” Natasha tells us. A football fan, Natasha performed at the 2008 Football League Cup Final and also recorded the Queen of the Night aria from Mozart’s Magic Flute, which was used as ITV’s theme for UEFA Euro 2008. “Football inspires so many unique feelings and emotions. I love the passion it brings out in people and these are themes it shares with music.” Coming from a close family, Natasha had always wanted to have a family of her own and in 2008 she and her husband, Dobs Vye, announced the birth of their first son, Harley on December 17. “Having children puts a completely different complexion on life and your outlook changes in so many ways. Suddenly it’s not a case of just being responsible for yourself; there’s this tiny, helpless little baby who looks to you for everything. “When I was able to return to work I would take Harley with me everywhere because I couldn’t bear to be away from him. There he was backstage at 15 weeks while I was performing! However, my husband and I wanted another child and we also didn’t want the gap between them to be too big, so when I found out I was pregnant again in 2010 it was a real joy. What wasn’t expected was having twins!” On November 23, Natasha gave birth to Olivier Jay and Leo Xander. “Since that moment I really can say that life has never been the same again. I mean it in a good way but already having had one child I thought I knew what to expect. I was mistaken! “In the run up to the birth I continued to perform — as I had done with Harley — right up until the last few days, although I looked like an ocean liner at some of my latter shows! “I had made the conscious decision that I wanted to be at home with my children and I wasn’t interested in having a Nanny. The experience passes by so quickly and I wanted to be there to go

through it with my children rather than hear stories of what they had been doing from someone else while I was away at work. “I appreciate not everyone has this luxury but for me it was important and I’m glad I had that opportunity. I’m also incredibly lucky that I have a very supportive family around me that I can rely on. My children really do have some fantastic grandparents that we can call upon. “Our home is a bit of madhouse at the minute and I can certainly say being a full time mum is probably the most exhausting thing I’ve ever done but it is also the most rewarding.” Since the birth of her children, has she noticed any change in her voice? “My voice has certainly altered since the babies. It sounds richer, it’s perhaps a more fruity instrument than it once was.” So when can we expect to see Natasha Marsh back on tour or in the studio? “I am back in the studio now getting some ideas together and I am planning some shows for the summer. I’m a little cautious about what to pick next because I want to continue to carve my own niche in the industry. “Opera in general has been much better accepted over the last two decades and I would suggest that Pavarotti provided that crossover moment back in 1990 with the World Cup. Now we can comfortably dismiss the idea that you need to be from a particular sector of society to appreciate it. “I know it is often said, so it can start to sound like a bit of a cliché but music crosses all boundaries and I don’t believe anything creative needs to be exclusive.” And as she looks forward in her career, what ambitions still drive her? “There are still so many things I want to do. I’m a big fan of Sting and I would love to work with him and I want to continue performing and writing. My children have given me a new dimension that I want to explore as well. “Equally, there are still many parts of the world that I would like to visit and perform in; I’ve not yet ventured to the Middle East but it would be great to do a concert or even a tour in the region. With my love of football perhaps they’ll invite me over to perform at the World Cup when it’s held in Qatar!” So does she remain optimistic for the music business in general? “Overall I would have to say I am fairly optimistic but the whole process is certainly changing and I have seen that, even in the relatively short time I’ve been involved. The business is evolving and it needs to because elements are in trouble. The labels are no longer what they used to be and the Internet has brought a fresh series of challenges as well as opportunities for record companies." “I don’t think that the conveyor belt mentality that reality TV has introduced to popular music is helping much either. For instance, I found the idea of the show Pop Star to Opera Star laughable. To be good at anything you need to work at it for years and the desire to love your craft needs to overtake everything else, including the general obsession with fame that so many people have today.” With so much going on in her life, does Natasha still find time for herself? “With three small children there isn’t much room for ‘me’ at the minute. My biggest luxury is sleep. I tend to structure everything around the feeding patterns of the twins so if there is a free moment, I grab a glass of wine or go for a pub lunch. Of course I always socialise with friends when I can as well.”

“I’ve not yet ventured to the Middle East but it would be great to do a concert or even a tour in the region. With my love of football perhaps they’ll invite me over to perform at the World Cup when it’s held in Qatar!”

Beauty WHAT'S HOT AND NOT

Beauty Buzz, Creating Rose Gold Looks With Bobbi Brown & Fasting Facts: The Weight Loss Debate.

BEAUTY

Romance of the Rose 56

The inspiration behind Rose Gold, celebrity makeup artist Bobbi Brown’s latest collection, is simple and romantic: her treasured rose gold wedding band. Ohlala! speaks with the Bobbi Brown Regional Training and Events Manager, Rafal Straszewski, to share the secrets on wearing this season’s prettiest hue. Ohlala! I June 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

FACE

First apply the Corrector under the eye using a concealer brush and blend lightly with your fingers. Then apply the Creamy Concealer using the same method and set with the powder. Using the foundation brush cover the whole face with foundation, excluding the eye area, dab the skin with the palm of your hands to achieve a uniformed look.

CHEEKS

Brush the Desert Pink Blush on the apples of your cheeks blending upwards across the cheekbones. Next sweep a Face Blender Brush across all five bars in the Wild Rose Shimmer Brick compact and lightly dust the highest part of your cheeks layering over the blush for a wash of colour effect.

EYES

As a base colour, brush Navajo Eye Shadow all over the upper eyelid. On the mobile eyelid, from the roots of lashes up to the crease, use the Rose Gold Shimmer Wash Eye Shadow. Then add the Rose Gold Shimmer Brick to the crease and inner corner of the eye. On the top lash line apply Caviar Ink Longwear Gel Liner and on the lower lash line use Espresso Eye Shadow. Lastly apply three to four coats of Black Everything Mascara.

LipS

Use the Beige Lip Liner to outline the lips, then apply Pink Peony Rich Lip Colour SPF12 with a lip brush. Finally, apply the Rose Gold Shimmer Lip Gloss.

TOP TIPS

As this look is created using pink tones on the eyes, cheeks and lips it is important to know that pink-toned eye shadows can accentuate under eye discolouration and eyelid redness, so it’s necessary to apply generous amounts of Corrector and Creamy Concealer under the eyes and light base shadow on the upper eye lid. When it comes to shimmer, moderation is key. Apply shimmer to just one or two features at a time. For lighter skin tones use the Rose Gold Shimmer Brick, and for darker shades apply the Wild Rose Shimmer Brick. Eye definition is especially important when wearing a monochromatic look. Apply a clean, crisp liner along the lash line and layer several coats of back mascara.

Beauty Buzz Natural Radiance

Each skin type has its own specific characteristics and self-defence capacities but all can be affected by temporary imbalances, such as dehydration, excess sebum, redness or loss of tone and radiance, caused by external aggressors, stress or change of season. Clarins has the ideal solution with its Face Treament Oils as they naturally give skin the means to “recover” and regain a perfect balance. Composed of 100 percent pure plant extracts, they provide skin with a wealth of natural benefits, leaving it incredibly satin-soft.

Turn Up The Heat

All desire, all heat, all woman, the new Limited Edition Bronze Goddess Capri makeup takes its cues from the sophisticated and luxurious sun-drenched atmosphere of the Isle of Capri. The look is one of warm, glimmering gold and metallic hues and sun-kissed tones, complemented by rich brown and bright white, which call to mind the folding crests and hidden depths of the Mediterranean Sea.

For natural beauties who still want kissable lips, what better than colour on demand? Sephora has created a one-size-fits-all, hydrating Colour Reveal Lip Balm with colour that adapts to the individual pH of the lips, procuring a unique rosy glow that lingers all day long.

Instant Wow!

They’re Real! The new mascara from Benefit, lengthens, curls, volumises, lifts and separates. The jet black, ultra-luxe and long-wearing formula creates a luscious look that won’t smudge or dry out. A specially designed brush, exclusive to Benefit, reveals lashes beyond belief for an instant wow! Bristles at the tip give an extra “push” when used vertically to lift and shape even the smallest lash.

Celebrating 20

Nuxe is celebrating 20 years of Huile Prodigieuse, the first multi-purpose dry oil, with the launch of a new limited edition. Developed to nourish, repair and soften the skin and the hair, it leaves the face and body silky and the hair becomes supple, soft and shines with health. The formula, enriched with Vitamin E and free of silicones, preservatives and mineral oils, is composed of six precious plant oils: Macadamia, Hazelnut, Borrage, Sweet Almond, Camellia and St. John's Wort. 58

Fasting Facts The debate over the best way to lose weight has raged for a very long time, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to go away anytime soon. One popular and effective strategy is intermittent fasting for weight loss. Ohlala! gives you the lowdown from Craig Bunting, Head Tutor at LIA-Qatar, the first fulltime fitness academy in the Middle East.

“If you have the will power to abstain from the intake of calories the likelihood of you losing body fat will skyrocket.”

Patagonia

T

raditional methods of fat loss include eating smaller, but more regular meals over the course of the day in an attempt to maintain a higher metabolism, therefore burning more calories, and eventually resulting in losing weight. Eating five to seven smaller ‘meals’ each day replaces the traditional three, and while that may work for some people, others struggle with preparing and consuming so many meals. But fear not, there is another option that is proving to be both popular and effective: Intermittent fasting for fat loss. This method, although somewhat controversial, makes a lot of sense. Not only is it finding results in the lab, but historically and in some religions, which use this method during various times of the year. However, the method is not going to suit everyone. Intermittent fasting is based around the theory of abstaining from the intake of food for periods of up to 72 hours, before ‘normal’ eating resumes. However, the term ‘normal eating’ can have many definitions. The basis for this method is that our Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), is going to stay the same regardless of what we do in the short term. BMR can be directly related to things like our age, gender, food consumption and the amount of Fat Free Mass (muscle) one has. If for example, your BMR is 1500 kcals per day, your body is going to burn those calories day in and day out. If you have the will power to abstain from the intake of calories, the likelihood of you losing weight, or more appropriately body fat, will skyrocket, especially if you partake in an appropriate resistance training program. We eat because we want to eat rather than actual “need”. People learn when to eat, and there are things in society that act as cues, regardless of

Asics

whether we want or need food. Our ancestors would have had long periods of restriction, which would have pushed their bodies to the limits. Brad Pilon, Author of the book Eat Stop Eat, talks about how the term “I’m starving”, is used far too often, and is highly inaccurate. Another option for consideration is restricting the amount of calories that you consume during periods where you want to drop your body fat levels. By only eating one, or two smaller meals per day instead of the standard three square meals (plus snacks) is bound to result in a decrease of body weight and fat loss. There isn’t a right or wrong answer to the weight loss debate — everybody’s system is different and will require different methods. If eating five to seven sensible meals a day works for you, then continue with that until it no longer suits you. If you are strong enough, and can avoid the temptations of consuming calories for the sake of it, then intermittent fasting, or caloric restriction just might be the answer to all your problems. Remember to keep hydrated with plenty of water. Certain people must be careful with this type of strategy due to the psychological aspect. If you happen to have an obsessive personality, then maybe this isn’t for you. There is a chance that it can lead to other, more harmful conditions such as Anorexia Nervosa or Bulimia Nervosa in certain people. With your chosen form of ‘diet’, always be safe, sensible and patient. Think of it as a marathon rather than a sprint, and you WILL get there in the end. Remember to consult your physician and nutritionist before embarking on any new weight loss plan. www.personaltrainerdoha.com 61

THE COFFEE

Regarded to be an integral part of your living room design, the coffee table comes in many styles and sizes, Georges Karam explores.

N

Antique Asian table by GK. Image by Loredana Mantellos & Carlos Villaroel

o matter how you envisage laying out your living room there is always the point of departure or centre point, and this attribute falls on the coffee table, which is an essential element of interior design. If we go back in time there was no such a thing as coffee table. It is quite a recent object that has become a must in our interiors. In Europe the first tables specifically designed as coffee or low tables appear to have been made in Britain the late nineteenth-century, influenced by the Japanese trend and the Ottoman tea ceremonial. As fashion evolved many coffee tables were subsequently made in what is called the Revival Style, plus Renaissance, Louis XIV, XV, XVI, Baroque, Regency and Gustavian among others. A wide range of materials and finishes have been used to create coffee tables over the years, such as patina and gilded wood, or exotic essence of wood in the 1930s, Formica in the fifties, not to forget the rise of plastic and its derivatives in the sixties and seventies. In

62

Table

Ohlala! I June 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

modern times tempered glass and metal have often been used as well as the upholstered version either in leather or fabric. Coffee tables were a late development in the history of furniture, and of course, since the invention and democratisation of television in the middle of the last century, it has shifted the way we layout our furniture accordingly to accommodate our new modern devices. The ideal coffee table is one that is in proportion with its surroundings. I would recommend a slightly larger size than what is required functionally, bearing in mind to keep around 50-centimetres of space between the seating and table. If the table is made from wood, and particularly a dark colour, it’s better to have a gloss or semi-gloss/satin finish as it is easier to maintain and less porous then the natural finish. Your choice will also depend on the type of style you’re looking for, such as modern or more classical. Whatever your inclination and style, place comfort before any other aspect when choosing a coffee table, as in the long run it is the first criteria for happy living.

Tribal Kidz One of the best and most popular fitness crazes on the island, Tribal Fitness is the wonderful concept thought up by Craig Heslop. He advises that due to parents concern about their children’s fitness, many children are now specialising into specific sports too early, which ultimately leads to over-use injuries, weaknesses and children with narrow motor skill abilities. According to Craig, “Health is more is more important than fitness”. This means children should be getting enough vitamin D from sunlight, which helps increase immunity, and should learn to eat goods fats found in fish, nuts and seeds, which leads to cognitive development and sustained energy release. In Tribal Kidz, the playing and exploring aspects mean children learn more and active kids means a high physical work capacity. Healthy kids equals happy kids! When? Wednesdays at 5pm Where? Flair

Located in the sophisticated World Trade Centre and within walking distance of the ultra-exclusive Moda Mall shopping destination, Bice promises a stylish dining experience. Founded in 1926, Bice’s heritage stems from by Beatrice Ruggeri — Bice to her family and friends — who was known for her extraordinary hospitality and personal warmth. The modern Bice restaurant of today stays true to her vision. The chic décor with soft lighting creates a tasteful ambiance of refinement, which discriminating diners will enjoy. Looking out through the floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall windows onto the bay, you could imagine you are on the water in a luxurious ocean liner. Within the restaurant a dramatic open staircase leads up to the Bice lounge; a very popular, vibrant venue to relax after dinner with music or catch up with friends. The cuisine at Bice is superb. Enjoy a variety of freshly baked bread served with a delightful olive oil and balsamic dressing made at your table, while you peruse the bountiful Italian menu, which will have your mouth watering with desire in anticipation of the imaginative creations to follow. The Antipasti Spadellata di Vongole e Capesante, sautéed clams with pan-seared scallops, is a delicious medley of delicate flavours. Carpaccio di Manzo, high-quality, hand-cut Angus beef carpaccio with citrus dressing and pine seeds is highly recommended. Another one of our favourite antipasti dishes is the Burrata Campana, organic fresh melt-in-your-mouth Burrata cheese from Puglia with Roman Puntarelle salad and anchovy sauce. Taking your taste buds on an exploration of flavours and textures, this is no ordinary salad. Catering to all, Bice offers a varied choice of risottos, pasta, fish, meat and vegetarian dishes to sample. After devouring our first selection of fine cuisine, we were treated to an array of specialties from the Chefs. Risotto ai Funghi Porcini, a creamy pleasure of carnaroli risotto with fresh porcini mushrooms, will satisfy your appetite. Not on the menu, but equally as outstanding, is the homemade wild Mediterranean sea bass ravioli, soft and flavoursome. The parcel baked sea bass is exceptional and a must for any seafood lovers. For the sweet-toothed there is a diverse dessert menu, or in Italian ‘Dolce,’ from the classic tiramisu, which is pure pleasure for your palate, Pannacotta “Bice-style” with raspberry sauce and Cioccolatissimo alla Bice, soft chocolate soufflé with vanilla ice-cream and Millefiori honey, as well as special order desserts. We were served up a divine, sweet temptation — chilled and creamy — made with a secret recipe, it’s sure to satiate your desire. Unique and imaginative, Bice’s Italian Chefs are happy to discuss options “off the menu” with any discerning diners looking for some creative flair. Buon appetito!

Dining Method 1. Peel and wash the prawns carefully under cold running water, season with salt and pepper. Wash the cherry tomatoes and cut in half. Wash the basil and cut half of it in fine julienne. Heat up the chicken stock and keep ready. 2. Heat the olive oil and fry the onion and garlic until golden, add rice and fry for half a minute.

3. Deglaze with white wine and reduce to minimum. Slowly add chicken stock and continue to stir until al dente. The risotto should be at this stage still a little liquidy.

eafood Risotto Always dreamed of making a gourmet meal but never had the confidence? With this recipe from Chef Afred Zuberbühler at the Moevenpick Hotel, you can impress guests with a five-star main course, sure to put a smile on everyone’s face! Heavenly Pan-fried Prawns on Tomato-Basil Risotto It is sometimes difficult to decide what to make when choosing a meal to entertain your guests with. With so much choice now available, people seem to have inherited the ‘fussy’ gene. This dish however is perfect for those impartial to a spot of seafood, and great to prepare for dinner parties. The best way to prepare for this dish is to source your ingredients locally. Head to the fish market to find the juiciest and biggest prawns for extraordinarily good value.

Ingredients: (serves 4)

74

1000g Fresh prawns (approx. 16 pieces ) 250g Italian Risotto rice “Arborio” 50g Finely chopped onion 20g Finely chopped garlic 50ml Olive oil 100ml White wine (optional, can be replaced by chicken stock) 500ml Chicken stock 200g Cherry tomatoes 50g Fresh basil leaves 50g Butter 100g Parmesan cheese, grated Fresh black pepper from the mill Ohlala! I June 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

4. While the rice is cooking, fry separately in another pan the prawns and in one more pan the cherry tomatoes with the basil julienne.

5. Once the rice is al dente, add the tomatoes, the butter and the parmesan to the rice, mix nicely and season to taste. The risotto should not be too compressed but slightly runny, if this is not the case you can correct by adding little bit of water. 6. Plate the risotto and place the prawns nicely on top, decorate with the remaining basil leaves and serve immediately.

Chef Afred Zuberbühler The newly appointed Swiss Chef, Afred Zuberbühler is well-known for his creativity, Afred brings a wealth of culinary experience with him having started cooking at the early age of 15. Previously Afred worked at the Badrutt’s Palace Hotel in Switzerland for different VIPs and celebrities. As an Executive Chef, he enjoys cooking at home too, where he prefers pasta and Asian food. He adds his personal touch to the Moevenpick's Wednesday Italian nights. Guests can enjoy a new concept of famous Italian cuisine with a totally new showcase bringing the bext recipes all the way from Rome, while enjoying the irresistable atmosphere and refreshments.

Ancient CamBodia Richly engraved by its history, Cambodia is an ancient land ornamented with aweinspiring temples, which lead one to truly appreciate this culture of smiling faces emerging from the exotic east. Hussain Al Sairafi explores…

C

ambodia is a discovery of the ancient, opening the door to a modern world. Its charm is held by curious people of simple needs who take the chance to engage with genuine interest. They eagerly share their language and ask where you are from. Their knowledge lies in the depth of their past and you can find a tour or personal guide wherever Cambodia takes you. Bordering east Thailand, there are only a few direct routes to enter Cambodia. The two cities by flight are Siam Reap and Phnom Penh. Although Siem Reap is smaller, it contains the jewel of Cambodia, Angkor Wat, thus the exploration begins here. It was an expedited process to attain a visa upon entry, and a prompt and cordial welcoming followed as I was led to my driver. He offered his services for the day and the rest of my stay there. I naturally kept the pleasant flow of his services with his warmth and understanding of English. Immediately taking advantage of the good weather, I met him outside the historic looking Hotel Ree. Many of Cambodia’s hotels have a stately appeal and are well maintained. Top on Cambodia’s agenda, is Angkor Wat. While driving up the enormity of what’s to be seen becomes clear. The expanse of the Temple affirms that Angkor Wat is the largest religious constructions in the world. The complete layout of all the temples is on the same massive scale. Angkor’s past is painted with the weathering of its age. Dark and steep, deep and tall, it bears the marks of unbridled ruin. Many of the temples in Cambodia have become relics. They are only able to be preserved by the tenacious endeavour of a few who have the resources and power to maneuver the oversized blocks of concrete into the puzzle of past architecture. The temple Ta Prohm, dawns the memory of Laura Croft’s battles in Tomb-Raider. Silvery gold metallic trees intertwine and have formed roots over and around the temple making for a real adventure’s backdrop. Banteay Srei is smaller, but a masterpiece of restoration that began the process for all the temples. Its colour is warm toned highlighting the intricately engraved details. Phnom Phen welcomes you to the city life with a variety of sites in close proximity. It is the capitol of Cambodia and offers a quaint riverside walk, French inspired, where the local social life comes alive. Restaurants along this way also offer highly recommendable cuisine and drinks of all types. Nearby, the Royal Palace can be toured daily. You’re free to name your price at the two main day markets, then enter The National Museum which has artefacts dating back to fourth century A.D. A quick tuk-tuk ride will get you where you want to be in a hurry, even if you’re not. If you like the island life, take a short ride and enjoy a few days stay on the southwest coast. Sihanoukville, pronounced without the “k”, See-ha-nu-vee, after the last Angkorian King, is also a naval port stop. Here services are rendered beachside for any visitor’s convenience. Fresh barbecued seafood is a likely specialty on that order, as well as fresh cut fruit, or a relaxing massage of your wish. I took a boat ride to the secluded Bamboo island where only visitors and the island hosts who bring your food and drinks, reside. Untouched by inhabitants, the island remains a paradise.

Cambodia offers a highly cultural and lightly rugged landscape that is safe and friendly to travel. A captive audience will welcome you with smiles and offer their services. The vast temples and relics will transport you into an exotic world of ancient mystery and delight. It’s a place to discover your adventurous side. It’s a holiday in Cambodia.

COMPACT

So many fabulous cars to choose from, so little time for us ladies to explore them all. Ohlala!‘s Diva Driver, Sari Mabire, offers a helping hand by looking at a few of the most stylish available.

Mini Cooper Mini Cooper is a great pick for a first car, even though experienced drivers will have a lot of fun in it too. Thanks to its quirky British character and German engineering, the Mini Cooper is still as popular as ever. The endearing retro styling and highly customisable options keep attracting new fans. Add to it the sharp handling, eco-friendly driving and excellent all round performance especially in S and JCW trims, and you know why this is a fantastic choice for fans of compact cars. The Cooper has a unique blend of personality and performance in the cutest package.

Volkswagen Beetle Another classic car with inimitable styling and powerful engine, it’s no surprise that the Beetle became an instant hit when it was re-launched back in 1998. The 2012 model is completely redesigned and is a bit more aggressive than in the past, and at the same time a lot more functional and still unmistakably a Beetle. The redesign not only gives the Beetle more classic proportions, but also provides more legroom, a bigger trunk and a more natural driving position comparing to the predecessor. A fun car for a vibrant young lady!

80

Renault Clio RS 200 Hot hatch — French style! This is more than just cute looks, the Clio is actually a pretty nimble sports car and would suit a lady who likes to be in control of her car and who enjoys driving. The Clio is better suited to those with driving experience as it only comes as a manual version, however real sports car fans will find that as a bonus rather than a hindrance. It is a serious sports car — what else can you expect from Renault who has a history of supplying winning engines to the F1 cars. Ohlala! I June 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

The California is highly customisable so you can let your creativity reign and express your personality with the interior and exterior colour choices as well as other options. It’s a car that you just want hop in, press the accelerator, enjoy the roar of the V8 and go for a long drive!

Maserati GranCabrio FENDI This car must be high on the wish list of any serious lover of Italian cars and fashion. Two iconic Italian brands have teamed up to produce every fashionistas dream car. And we at Ohlala! have it from a reliable source that the GranCabrio FENDI has already landed on our shores! The GranCabrio is a real four-seater and it actually has enough space to accommodate four adults, so grab your stylish trendsetting friends, put the top down and let the powerful V8 engine bellow under the bonnet while the rest of the people will be glancing — ok, staring — at you green with envy...

Audi TT We have spotted many a chic lady driving the Audi TT and indeed it is a great drive for sports car enthusiasts. Fun but not frantic, versatile and exciting with refined styling, comfortable enough for daily driving, it ticks many boxes on the car wish list. If you want to squeeze your kids on the back seat opt for the Coupe; and if you wish to just cruise around with a friend pick the convertible Roadster, either will keep you a happy driver.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Mercedes-Benz S-Class is very high up on the pecking order of all the luxury sedans as it has been the forerunner in the automotive development for decades, showcasing innovative new features in safety, technology and performance since the beginning. The 2012 model stays true to that timetested pedigree. This gorgeous car is available in various trims and even the most hard to please lady can find one to suit her taste. The Charger is a great family car that you can have lot of fun driving around with plenty of space for shopping, camping gear and prams.

MOTORING FEATURE Mercedes-Benz ML 350

T 84

here is no mistaking that the 2013 model ML 350 4Matic Blueefficiency is a Mercedes — at first glance the classic front grille spells even to the entirely uninitiated that this car comes from the world’s oldest automotive brand. Totally today it is though — from the sporty and clean exterior design to the luxuriously appointed interiors and technologically advanced engine. LED day time running lamps come as standard; and the car that I had also had the panoramic sliding sunroof. Inside you can set the ambient lighting according to your mood from the orange “Solar” to cool blue “Polar”, or keep it just neutral. The ML 350 is very comfortable to drive and the steering is incredibly light, making you think that you’re driving a sedan instead of a SUV. In case your concentration begins to lapse the Attention Assist system gives you a warning and tells you when it’s time to stop for a coffee. The running is extremely quiet, and the cabin is very spacious making it a great choice for families. Even three car seats can be anchored next to each other on the back seat, and the two outer seats have the ISOFIX child seat attachment points as standard. The boot is large and very easily accommodates your weekly shopping as well as couple of pushchairs. Multimedia system is — as expected — top notch. The car that I had came with the COMAND multimedia system, which features an Internet browser, combines all audio, telephone and navigation functions and also includes the Speed Limit Assist function. It comes with a plethora of functions some of which are Aux-in socket and USB port, Bluetooth interface with hands-free function, DVD drive, a 17.8 cm colour screen display, voice-operated control Ohlala! I June 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

Lot of fun and excitement in an opulent package for both city dwellers and off road enthusiasts, as well as families.

system and the list goes on and on! For families with children I would recommend getting also the Rear Seat Entertainment System, which consists of a DVD player, two 20.3 cm screens built into the front head restraints, two sets of wireless headphones and a remote control. It is also possible to link up a game console. With this system back seat fights should be a thing of the past as kids will not get bored, no matter how long the journey or the traffic jam is. Mercedes-Benz have historically been the pioneers of many safety systems in the automotive industry and the new ML 350 is the sum of all safety concepts developed by the brand. The systems come in four phases: first are safe driving systems which help the driver to avoid accidents in the first place, second phase is in case of danger the protective systems get activated, third one is protection as required in an accident and the fourth one is alleviating the consequences of an accident and enabling rapid assistance. As a result of this the car comes with a multitude of safety features, some of which are stability and traction control systems, brake assist, preventative occupant protection system, impact protection system, a galore of airbags, reverse camera, automatic parking and many more. Under the bonnet you have a 3.5 litre V6 which takes the ML 350 from 0-100 km per hour in 7.6 seconds, swift for a SUV this size. The engine is not only dynamic but with the new BlueDIRECT system it is also very efficient when it comes to fuel consumption and emissions. Not a bad thing at all with going green being trendy these days. The performance of the car does not suffer one bit from this, Mercedes-Benz have managed to combine the environmental aspects without affecting the driving pleasure. In all aspects a lovely car!

Hyundai Azera 2012

yundai have completely redesigned the 2012 model of the Azera — with pretty good results. It looks more dramatic and attractive from the outside, spacious and airy from the inside with leather covered seats coming as standard. The seats are very comfortable and the legroom is ample for even very tall people. Typical of the Hyundais of today, the Azera comes packed with all the modern luxuries such as easy entry / exit system, keyless entry and ignition, rear view camera, dual zone automatic climate control, navigation system, parking assist system, Bluetooth hands free mobile phone system, auxiliary audio jack and an iPod/USB interface, easy-touse touch screen interface, excellent Infinity surround sound stereo system, ventilation (works wonders in the 40+ degrees of the hot Gulf summer heat!) and heating systems on the seats; and a whole lot more. It even has a massage function on the driver’s seat; making sitting in the traffic jams a more relaxing affair and possibly helping irate drivers from developing road rage... acceleration. It takes you from 0-100 kilometres per hour in 8.4 seconds, quite respectable for a car of this size. Driving the Azera is a pleasant experience. It is smooth and quiet and feels very steady on the road. The soft suspension absorbs bumps and potholes with ease. Among others, the Azera standard safety features include electronic stability program, antilock disc brakes, traction controls, active front head restraints, front and rear side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags, a driver-side knee airbag and smart cruise control to help maintain safe driving distance while cruise control feature is engaged. There are also child seat anchors making installing the child seats straightforward and secure. There is an electronic rear curtain and manually operated side curtains on the rear seats which block the sunlight effectively, allowing your kids to nap comfortably during the ride. The very spacious boot easily accommodates pushchairs as well as the weekly grocery shopping. All considered the Azera comes as a complete package to impress and cherish. Hyundai are excelling in creating superb value for money cars and the Azera is another testament to that. We like!

Ohlala! Stars Giovanni unveils your future for May Happy Birthday Ms Taurus

There is so much going on at the moment you could be forgiven for letting the odd thing slip through the net. Workwise a business venture is progressing well and other revenue streams previously unexplored will open up delivering promising returns. You’ll need to keep a handle on the numerous opportunities presenting themselves but if you can manage this then you will be able to lay down a firm foundation from which to work on. A face from the past may return to dip into your successes but you should keep your distance otherwise you could find matters getting more complicated then they need to.

April 20 – May 20

Taurus — at a glance

Taurean's are generally solid, practical, determined and possessors of a strong will and intense practicality but they are resistant to change. They are also loyal, romantic and make excellent lovers although they do have a need for reassurance, which can be a little too claustrophobic for some. They can sometimes be stubborn; if you are looking to pick a fight, steer clear of a Taurean! Material comforts are important to Taureans and their homes are they castles. Though financial security is important, it is emotional security that gives them strength more than any worldly possession.

CANCER (June 21 – July 22) You have just closed the door on a very difficult April but fortunately as we move into more favourable May — and your kindred earth sign Taurus — things will improve dramatically. Valuable lessons have been learnt and you would do well to appreciate those closest to you in future, especially when connected to illness.

LEO (July 23 – August 22)

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21) You have suffered emotionally of late but the good news for many of you is that the heartaches will now pass and a renewed period of growth and potential is about to be enjoyed from May onwards. Getting your confidence back after a relationship failure can be hard, but someone is waiting in the wings to help you through.

Sagittarius (Nov 22 – Dec 21) It’s been all about health matters for many of you this month and whilst the worst of a situation is now out of the way, it is advisable for you to remain cautious and not to try and “run before you can walk” again. Recuperation means just that, so allow the healing process to take its natural course and don’t rush things.

Capricorn (Dec 22 – January 19) Although you can be an ambitious and successful sign, the nature of the beast you are means that on the flip side you can sometimes allow your darker nature to get the better of you. Don’t allow a minor setback to knock you off course and ruin all the good work already invested. Nothing can stop you in full flow except your own insecurities.

Aquarius (January 20 – February 18) May will be good to you with investments returning well and relationships at the best they have been for some time. However, you do need to be aware of not allowing complacency to set in. Keep your mind focused and your thoughts on your ambitions and greater opportunities will arise.

VIRGO (August 23 — September 22) You are not always the most tactful sign and your sometimes-analytical view of love can cause friction in relationships and make it difficult for you to meet new people. If there is a new flame on the horizon or you have just entered into a new affair, try thinking less and using your emotions a little more. Talking from the heart can work just as well.

Pisces (February 19 – March 19) You feel like your life has been dropped into a box, shaken violently and then emptied out onto the street for all to view, such is the disarray and turmoil around you at the moment. Emotional and financial pressures are also eating into your insecurities and you need to get a grip quickly before matters pass beyond your control. 102

GEMINI (May 21 – June 20) You have been feeling vulnerable of late and this has something to do with a major uncertainty in your love life. You are not usually one to bottle up your fears but it could be that part of you already knows any confrontation will reveal truths you don’t want to face. However, is this current state of limbo really worth suffering?

Lions roar but being the loudest beast in the jungle doesn’t always mean you will get your own way. It’s not just about how vocal you are but whether you can provide the actions to back up your claims. If you have a dispute that needs to be settled make sure you have a plan of action should your opponent call your bluff. Libra (September 23 – October 22) May is a good month for you in general and there is no doubting that many of you will make progress where work is concerned but you can’t relax your efforts because there is still some way to go before you can achieve what you are searching for. Perseverance can sometimes be your downfall so be sure you stick to your task.

Aries (March 20 – April 19) You have a lot of work on your hands this coming month but it is focused on subject matter you enjoy. It will help open up a new dimension to your life that is going to bring rich rewards, creatively and financially. On the romance front, time away with a loved one will prove enlightening and reaffirm your commitment to each other.

"I had the honour of finally meeting Karl Lagerfeld. We sat and discussed a number of creative ideas, and may I just share, he said I had "the face". Not sure entirely what he meant by that but hey, it's Karl Lagerfeld, so okay. Ultimate compliment, fully accepted."

urrently, I'm in the pretty little Kingdom of Monaco. Soaking up a sunrise view as I recover from the glamorous hell that was this year's Cannes Film Festival. Seven days of backto-back events, premieres, red carpets and cameras as every major Hollywood, fashion and music type descended upon the South of France. Every night, was a highlight. I had the pleasure of attending this year's dose of grandiose with my dear friends Mohammed Al Turki, Michelle Rodriguez, Zak Tanjeloff and more. On arrival, it was straight onto Eva Longoria's cocktail bash, which was on a boat, which quickly filled to a point of silliness, which my dress didn't really appreciate. We then moved on to what was one of my favourite galas at Cannes 2012: Petra Nomcova, Paul Haggis and Sean Penn's "Haiti Carnival", where Sean's passionate words on a human's responsibility to care for mankind resonated with every bone in my being. It was lovely seeing old friends (who I just kept on seeing), as well as meeting with a number of Haitian residents, who flew in for the affair in support of Petra's Happy Hearts Fund, Paul's Artists For Peace & Sean's JPHRO organisation. The following day saw one big boom of a yacht party hosted by Saudi Arabia's Mohammed Al Turki. It was on the Omega, an 80-foot beast of a boat that still couldn't accommodate the number of guests flocking on various piers attempting to make their way to the popular film producer's soiree. Mohammed was in town promoting two of his upcoming film projects, At Any Price, a Ramin Bahraini production starring Zac Efron, and Arbitrage, which many say will finally see Richard Gere winning his first Oscar. Post the unforgettable Al Turki/Omega reception, was the Lawless after-party — a great movie, that I'm pleased to say sees and celebrates the return of the alpha male on the big screen (it's about time). Other affairs included CAA's gathering of A-list talent at Le Baron, Chopard's beautiful dinner and dance, set in a secret location that simply took my breath away, P.Diddy's boat bash (relaxed and informal, my kind of party), Abu Dhabi Film Festival's Cannes celebration (great seeing the region represented), Di Grisogono's infamous Antibes showdown (which saw a pretty boring performance by Taio Cruz) and Kanye West's premiere of his short film Cruel Summer. In case you don't know, Cruel Summer was shot in Qatar, in association with the Doha Film Institute. The film's makers had told me of their interest to respectfully

infuse and celebrate Lawle ss: Arab culture, which exchan Mohamme dA ge film they did rather ideas l Turki & at the J well. The installation premi essica Cha s ere's a fter-pa tain (seven screens, for an all round rty. visual experience) is an interesting concept, and despite the film not making official selection in Cannes, I respect the fact that Kanye & co. decided to rent a car park, set up the necessary, and outh n the S screen the film, anyway. ds upo n e c s e d Killing Me Softly, Brad usness e. pendo on stu of Franc i Pitt's new film, was h s a rd: F Chopa probably the most talked about premiere at this year's festival; I suppose as a result my expectations were extremely high, and err, well, in short... they weren't met.
