Celebrating Creativity Unique, effervescent, and passionate — these words may not hold much significance, but when used to describe the highly talented jewellery maker, Bettina Al Bakhit, their vibrancy becomes apparent.

B

ettina Al Bakhit is a multi-talented jewellery maker who fully comprehends the relationship between beauty and jewellery, creating stunning singular pieces of wearable art. Exploring her imagination through the techniques of beading, she produces intricate, colourful and unique designs. Her love for colour and grasp of spatiality are themselves evident in her home décor, indicating that her innate talent is a varied one. Born in Kuwait to a Kuwaiti father and an American mother, Bettina graduated from the American University in Washington D.C. with a degree in Political Science, but carved out her career in the telecommunications industry. Her creative journey began in 1998 when she found herself lost between the winding streets of the local Indian goods market in Deira, Dubai, and came across a small shop selling Swarovski bikon crystals; falling in love with the assortment of hues on display. “At the time they simply represented beautiful, shiny things,” she admits Bettina’s inherent appreciation for colour, which initially drove her to take notice of the stones, became her primary guide when creating. She asks to be referred to as a jewellery maker rather than a designer because her pieces “come together along my inspirational journey”. 28

Ohlala! I October 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

Rather than working from renderings, she begins the process by physically placing various beads of different colours, grades and shapes in front of her, before she starts to tap into her creative spirit. “I design in my mind as I go along, nothing is predetermined; the end result is completely unexpected. I am inspired in part by the wild colours of Kashmiri craftsmanship, textiles, and art. I want to depict their rich culture by mirroring it in my creations, with the hope to somehow honour the bountiful nature of their culture. “Colour is my character; I’m every colour at the same time, a passionate contradiction represented in the combinations I use. In the world of creativity, there are no rules, don’t ask me what limits one has with the spectrum, you will definitely find an appreciative eye for an eclectic combination.” Bettina eventually decided to leave the corporate world behind to begin bead and jewellery making, along with her best friend and business partner, Lubna Saif Abbas. The initial joint investment was made to set up a design and bead-making studio, consisting of an exhaust ducting system, butane canisters and an oxygen extractor dangerously placed at the back of her house. There were many challenges along the way. Learning how to create the pieces was frustrating, due to an initial lack of familiarity with techniques, so they chose to discover more about the process by travelling to various countries and learning from renowned craftsmen. After much toil, trial and error, they started producing their first art beads from blown glass right in the heart of their studio. Shortly thereafter, the label LB o J’zazz was born and has since gained popularity in Kuwait. Besides creating jewellery and running a retail wholesale business, LB o J’zazz now teaches others the craftsmanship of beading and jewellery-making through their Tashkeel Education Program; the aim of which is to transfer knowledge to others in the community, as a way to encourage them to succeed with their own personal ventures. Bettina says that LB o J’zazz’s long-term vision is to promote the concept of ‘artisanal living’, a holistic concept aimed to encourage more pride in working with one’s hands, to free people to become innovators and developers. “We in Kuwait find ourselves at the most ideal time and space to be innovators and creators. We are privileged, have ample free time, disposable income, we are fashion-savvy and not afraid of colour. Hence, we ought to be exporting our goods and knowledge to the rest of the Arab world. We have the greatness within us; don’t wait to tap into it, whatever it is. Find it, highlight it, and be proud to make a living out of it.” Visit the LB o J’zazz shop at Shaab Al Bahry, Al Shaab Complex www.lbojzazz.blogspot.com

“We are at an age in our culture where using our hands as a creative tool is shunned. My aim is to re-ignite a feeling of pride within the realm of creativity; it’s about freeing oneself from the system.” 29

THE CAUSE

Think About Pink

You’ll probably see more pink than usual this month, after all, October marks Breast Cancer Awareness month. We highlight the institutions that are doing their utmost to help combat the disease. We also bring you the story of Abbie, a young woman who is currently undergoing breast cancer treatment. Her ordeal has taught her to find meaning in the little things and through her story, plans to bring hope to thousands.

B

eing diagnosed with breast cancer is fraught with challenges for any woman. All of a sudden, one is faced with a number of decisions to make — about treatment, follow-up care, and probably the most difficult — the management of side effects. All of these can be daunting, and coping with the emotional and psychological stress accompanying a potentially life-threatening disease can be very difficult. Although a diagnosis of breast cancer is less frequent in younger women, even teenagers are now being reported as sufferers of the disease. Abbie, whom we interviewed, is only in her mid-30s — proof that the misconception that breast cancer is an old person’s disease is simply untrue. Young Heart Speaking to us with approachable candour, Abbie relays that on the evening of March 28 this year, she started feeling sharp pains on her right breast. She examined herself, felt a hard lump, so she

30

Ohlala! I October 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

immediately booked an appointment to see a doctor the very next day. In April, after a series of check-ups and a biopsy, the doctor delivered the news — she had Stage Two breast cancer. Abbie was understandably shocked and left questioning how such a diagnosis could occur. Even more difficult, she wasn’t sure how she would break the news to her family. That day, when the doctor asked the nurse to leave the room and shut the door, so he could tell her the news in private, Abbie said she felt the world around her collapse. “I felt my soul leave my body. I was extremely shaken and terrified. My family and I were shocked, scared and very sad, but they quickly showed a lot of support and encouragement to get through this nightmare,” recounts Abbie. The diagnosis led to a string of decisions. First, she was given two treatment options to remove the tumour found on her right breast: a lumpectomy, or a mastectomy. “I decided to have a lumpectomy as it was in the early stage. I thank God that it hasn’t spread,” she tells us. She underwent surgery followed by six sessions of chemotherapy. Losing her mother to cervical cancer ten years prior, Abbie says

“When it comes to breast cancer you are not alone, and scary though it is, there’s a network of amazing women who are willing to help you through it.” that one will never fully understand cancer unless you personally experience it. So we ask her how she coped during her treatments: “It has been extremely exhausting and difficult. It just sucks the life out of you. But with the love and support of my family and friends I am making it through. There are times when I even forget that I am sick.” Throughout everything that she has so far experienced, Abbie says that apart from the unending support that friends and family provide, she stresses that it’s extremely important to have an open and honest doctor-patient communication. Getting in contact with support groups also meant that Abbie was guided in the right direction as far as understanding her condition was concerned. Her faith in God, and a positive outlook has let Abbie weather through the most turbulent times in her life. “I definitely appreciate life more now. To anyone who’s going through breast cancer or any cancer for that matter, I say ‘Fight the disease, don’t let it fight you’. Ask questions and ask for help. Surround yourself with positive people and laugh, laugh, laugh.” Abbie continues to follow a healthy lifestyle — eating a wellbalanced and nutritious diet and exercising regularly. Now one month after her very last chemotherapy treatment, She may still need to go for some more tests, but Abbie says she is definitely feeling stronger every day. It is worthwhile to note that when it comes to breast cancer you are not alone, and scary though it is, there’s a network of amazing women who are willing to help you through it. The Fight Against Breast Cancer Over the years, several institutions in Kuwait have supported the cause in not only highlighting the need to raise awareness about breast cancer. We highlight two organisations who are helping those who are suffer from the disease — they not only provide useful about breast cancer to the patients and their families — in turn helping them make informed decisions, but more importantly, they work with private individuals and various sectors, both public and private to help find solutions and hopefully one day, find a cure.

Cancer Awareness Nation The Cancer Awareness Nation (CAN) is a national awareness campaign under the patronage of HH Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad AlJaber Al Sabah. Formed in 2006, CAN conducts various campaigns, seminars and activities, media, TV advertisements and surveys to spread general awareness about cancer and to further involve communities in Kuwait towards not only understanding the disease but learning ways to prevent it. Aside from awareness campaigns, they encourage people, especially women to get themselves medically checked regularly. Jazz Capital of the Middle East?

Ten years ago it would have been unthinkable, but with one of the world’s longest established and best known jazz clubs opening its second home in Doha, the title ‘jazz capital of the Middle East’ is now a real possibility. Josie Hill explores… 34

Ohlala! I October 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

“Jazz music is born from a mix of cultures, and comes from the rhythm and experiences of people from all around the globe. Every performance creates a community, the musicians with each other and the audience sharing something unique.”

“We are going to play our hearts out and see what happens.”

T

op class jazz performers will be heading to Doha over the coming months as the St Regis Hotel’s brand new Jazz at the Lincoln Center JALC venue is now open for business, with a rich and varied program of jazz delights for aficionados and newcomers alike. It is a first on many counts — for the hotel which itself only opened in March this year; for the music club, which has hosted nights in other big cities but never set up home anywhere outside New York before; and for the musicians whose task it is to launch the venue and sow the seeds for a new tradition of jazz music in Qatar. Paving the way for the first performance by the Afro-Cuban jazz duo the Rodriguez Brothers, vice president of JALC Amy Knapp tells us, “This is the first Lincoln Center venue outside of the original one in New York. Opening this center enables us to extend the message of jazz further. Music is a way to bring people together. “Jazz music is born from a mix of cultures, and comes from the rhythm and experiences of people from all around the globe. Every performance creates a community, the musicians with each other and the audience sharing something unique. “It may seem strange that we have chosen Doha as our second home, but that answer is, we came here because we were asked. We could not have done it without the support of (St Regis Doha’s owner) Mr Alfardan, who shares a love of jazz and our vision of music as a common ground.” The relationship between the New York St Regis and JALC in the hotel’s rooftop ballroom goes back over a century. Great names like Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Dave Brubeck and Dizzy Gillespie made a name for themselves at the club and created a jazz legacy, which brought the new sound to new audiences. A century on and it looks like the JALC brand is about to go global, with the move to Doha representing the first of several JALC’s in St Regis hotels globally. Half Cuban, half Ecuadorian and brought up in Miami, Florida the Rodriguez Brothers had the honour of entertaining the new club’s first guests on September 24, for the start of two week-long shows: ‘What is Jazz?’ followed by ‘What is Afro-Cuban Jazz?’. Pianist Robert Rodriguez says, “We are going to be playing many things from the three records and we are going to try out some new compositions. It will be interesting, as we don’t know what to expect from audiences (in the Middle East). So we are going to play our hearts out and see what happens.” Hot on the Rodriguez Brothers heels, star performer and ninetime Grammy Award winner Wynton Marsalis with the Wynton Marsalis Quintet will be wowing audiences at the official grand opening on October 4, ahead of other international artists including Myron Walden Momentum, the Eric Reed Quintet and the Aaron Diehl Quintet. Alongside the program of two-week long shows there will be bi-weekly jazz talks on topics such as ‘How to Listen to Jazz’, ‘Global Influences on Jazz’ and ‘Melodies of Miles Davis’. As jazz clubs are relatively thin on the ground in the region, such high profile musicians are expected to generate interest from audiences not just in Doha but further afield.

Woman in Power

La Femme Extraordina Firmly belonging to the rare breed of courageous women who aren’t afraid to break the mould, Kholoud Al Feeli has had an exceptional career. Ohlala! sits down with this exuberant woman to discover more.

K

holoud Al Feeli graduated from the American School in Kuwait, afterwards attending Kuwait University where she majored in Political Science and Minored in English Literature. With notable university instructors, who became her mentors, such as Dr Massouma Al Mubarak, Shafiq Ghabra and Ghanim Al Najjar — all who have gone on to become very influential within their own fields, Kholoud’s had the opportunity to glean from their burgeoning visions. Being born to parents who were both pioneers in the Kuwaiti media inspired Kholoud to fearlessly forge her career path. Her father and mother both earned their degrees in Mass Communication from the University of Southern California. Her father went on to become the Undersecretary at the Ministry of Communications, and her mother served as television and radio presenter. Hence, it was natural for her to follow a similar career path. Kholoud joined the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), initially as a desk editor, but eventually asked to be sent out on the field as a journalist. Female journalists at the time were a very rare breed, due to cultural constraints. However, this didn’t stop her from proving to her superiors that she was capable of the job. Her first foray into the field was alongside the British Royal Ordinance where she reported on their mine clearing activities, after the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. Kholoud went on to prove to her immediate boss that she was more than capable of handling the job as a female journalist and he obliged. She then requested to become the agency’s Diplomatic Correspondent — working with foreign dignitaries, enabling her to meet well-known figures who she had the privilege of interviewing, such as Nelson Mandela whom she remembers warmly. “I’m proud to have interviewed Mr Mandela, who upon shaking his hand and thanking him, in turn stated that he was the proud one to be shaking hands with me, a Kuwaiti female.” At one point in her career, Kholoud held three different jobs. Aside from being a journalist with the KUNA, she also worked with the UNHCR as an information officer and fundraiser, whilst assisting her father run his media company at the same time. All these took place as she was raising her daughter. If those weren’t enough to keep her busy, it was also during this period that she won The Dame Violet Dickson Chevening Award for an academic paper she penned analysing the British Press’s reporting of Human Rights issues during the Iraq war. “My personal cause was reporting on the crossing over of refugee seekers into Kuwait from the Iraqi border. My pictures were always picked up by the wires,” says Khulood. The career was not without its challenges. Being a female reporter amongst men, especially during that period of time, made her work hard at enforcing her credibility to command respect from her peers. As a woman, working long hours into the night was an especially difficult part of her job, again due to cultural restrictions, yet she survived and flourished in this field for over 15 years. Kholoud is currently Zain’s Group Corporate Communications Manager; a company she holds dear to her heart. “Zain inspires me, I love working with the team. It’s one 36

of those organisations, which one genuinely wants to give back to.” Her guiding principle in life is rather simple. It is one of forgiveness and caring. She strives to carry out an act of kindness every day. No matter what it is that she does — whether it be towards a fellow human, an animal, or even the simple act of watering a plant, she believes she hasn’t lived a day until she can do something positive for others. “I believe strongly in Karma, that my powers of intention are my guidelines in life, which I try to abide by. Forgiveness too is important for me, I am blessed to be able to forgive; it belies great strength (to me). I’ve forgiven much, and it is not easy, but I’ve managed and found myself to be a happier, lighter person as a result.” Kholoud hopes to one day go back to journalism, to help raise

awareness regarding the political and social situation in Kuwait. She wants to be able to touch on why tribal sectarianism and a lack of nationalism are rampant among Kuwaitis, whilst expats on the other hand, appreciate greatly what the country provides for them. She would like to pass on the sentiment that above tribal and religious sectarianism, a citizen’s loyalty ought to be to the nation. However, she accepts that change is constant and painful: “You have to grow through it to be happy.” On a final note, Kholoud tells us about her great love for her parents who continue to support and encourage her. She is grateful for the fact that she continues to learn from them. She also shares the advice she gave to her daughter. “One can choose everything except one’s parents and one’s boss,” She confesses.

Julie Delpy

Another Two Days French film star Julie Delpy’s new film, Two Days in New York, has just been released on Blu Ray and DVD. Ben Whittaker caught up with the Oscar-nominated actress to discover how she fared as director, co-writer and one of the leads in this comedy sequel.

“When you are involved in any aspect of a film you become intimately attached, you can’t help it. Movie-making is all about the creative process so it is difficult to detach.”

39

Celebrity Scoop ulie Delpy has enjoyed a long and distinguished career in cinema. Now 42, she has worked with some of the leading lights in both Europe and the US, including her acclaimed collaborations with Ethan Hawke and director Richard Linklater. The only child of a theatre director father and an actress mother, Delpy was exposed to the business from a very early age. “My parents have been really supportive throughout my career and they raised me to appreciate and love art and museums. I was exposed to the works of great filmmakers such as Ingmar Bergman as a child and it provided me with an essential grounding and a great platform for my later involvement with film. It was a great childhood and one I still look back on fondly.” However, it hasn’t always been easy for the Parisian girl who has been plagued by health problems since her childhood although this is not something she talks about openly. An accomplished actress, she is also a talented musician, writer (she was nominated for an Oscar as co-writer on Before Sunset) and director. Her latest film Two Days in New York, is a sequel to her 2007 film Two Days in Paris and is a project which she is intimately involved with. “I co-wrote the script with Alexia Landeau as well as directing and starring in it so it was a very important project for me. Not that I subscribe to the blame game but if you’re an actor and a film doesn’t turn out the way you expected you can blame the director. Equally, if you’re a director and the film doesn’t work out well you can blame the stars and if you’re a writer you can probably blame them both for not translating your vision to the screen! I was all three so there was nowhere to hide,” Delpy explains. In the film she plays Parisian Marion, living in New York with her son to be closer to Jack, the boy’s father (Marion’s ex-boyfriend from Two Days in Paris. She and her new boyfriend Mingus have a comfortable relationship until Marion’s father, sister and sister’s boyfriend arrive on vacation. The two days they spend together as a group form the basis of the movie and open the door to “unwitting racism and sexual frankness”, with no one left unscathed. Her co-star on the movie was American comedian Chris Rock who was someone she always had in mind for the role. “I wrote the script with Chris in mind but I wasn’t sure he would accept. I had met him only once — at the Oscars the year I was nominated when he was hosting — but I approached his agent with the idea and eventually he agreed. “It was a pretty hectic period for me because I had a young baby (her son Leo is now three and half) and like a lot of women after pregnancy, you often run the risk of post natal depression. In fact my choice was very clear: depression or production. Fortunately, I chose production but it was certainly not a forgone conclusion to start with. “When you are involved in any aspect of a film you become intimately attached, you can’t help it. Movie-making is all about the creative process so it is difficult to detach. I try to separate myself from it afterwards — partly because you need to keep moving and evolving in this business and partly because if you dwell too long on something it can become an obsession.” As you might imagine from its title, Two Days in New York was filmed completely in the Big Apple but even this wasn’t without its complications. “I love New York. It’s vibrant and busy and there is always something going on. But for a filmmaker, this can be a curse as well as a blessing. We filmed every element of the movie there — even down to the interiors — and the thing that stood out most for me was just how noisy the place is! That was one of my biggest challenges.” The film has been well received by critics so how important is their reaction to her? “Of course, it’s important because what they say can have a 40

Ohlala! I October 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

financial impact on a film and no matter how much we want to talk up the virtues of the creative process, let’s not forget the movie business is just that — a business. I generally expect the worst and that way I limit the disappointment. “However, as an artist, when you invest so much of yourself into a project you can’t help but be a little hurt if people react badly to what you have done. Plus, when you are an actor you complete your scenes and then walk away from a film when, for the director, the real hard work begins as you try to piece everything together. You are with the film more often and for much longer so it is a very intimate experience.” And does she feel she has achieved what she set out to do? “I think so…I hope so,” she smiles. “I wanted to make a film that mixes very real characters in a comedic situation, to highlight the cultural differences. I like humour that mixes politics and sex and gets under the skin of a subject.

“I wanted to make a film that mixes very real characters in a comedic situation, to highlight the cultural differences.”

“Comedy is a difficult medium to work in — perhaps the hardest of all genres because it isn’t easy making people laugh.” So how does she feel the industry has changed while she has been directly involved with it? “A lot has changed — especially in America. There is certainly less money in Hollywood these days. The real funding, for Indie films at least, is in Europe now. Trying to make an independent film in the US — unless you can get it done for under $500,000 — is pretty much impossible. “The competition from quality television as well as the internet and video on demand have all helped to reshape the industry. But then if we didn’t have challenges like these we’d still be making silent movies!” Two Days in New York is out now on Blu Ray, DVD and iTunes.

Bespoke Elaborate and luxurious Bina Goenka jewellery designs are born from a desire to craft unique and timeless pieces. Ohlala! sits down with the talented woman behind the exquisite creations. 72

Ohlala! I October 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

In what ways are you a creative person? Bina Goenka. It took me a long time to embrace my creative talent and realise that I could make a profession out of it. Initially, my skills and talents were similar to those of my parents and other family members — all of whom are lawyers, and so it seemed natural for me to pursue law as a profession. It was only post wedlock that my creativity had a chance to materialise, even in the smallest ways. For instance, I started designing clothes, even small pieces of jewellery from home. My family would ask me to host festivals and events on our behalf, as they knew that my eyes were trained to put something beautiful together. After my children left India to pursue their education, I started thinking about my professional ambitions, and found myself excited and eager to design and create, as opposed to practice law. As a result, I tried my hand at jewellery designing, and before long, I was designing for a luxury brand, and then my own — Bina Goenka. Creativity is a flexible talent, with many applications. If you are creative, you are creative in every possible way; it’s simply the degree of creativity that varies. I can apply my creativity to any field, whether it’s jewellery, designing houses, buildings, or even writing a book. Why choose jewellery design? BG. While growing up, I always had an eye for objects that stood out of the ordinary. This applied to anything from jewellery to clothes and even to food. However, I constantly noticed a deficit for jewellery that was any different to what was being sold in the shop next door. I also found that the jewellery that was available was very two-dimensional, created to quantify gold usage and to complement the Indian garment, as opposed to being a piece of its own. This set me on a path to create something original, beautifully artistic and yet easily wearable. How has your culture influenced your designs? BG. Culture plays a key part in structuring my designs, as from my experience of wearing jewellery, I knew the aspects that worked and the ones that didn’t. For instance, Indian women are tagged as wearers of heavy jewellery, and yet I knew that while pieces must look elaborate, they should be a pleasure to adorn rather than a palpable pain. As a result, I knew that my pieces needed to be feather-light, however ‘heavy’ they may look, and accordingly I use the latest technology in order to ensure this.

73

FASHION From where do you draw your inspiration? BG. Everything inspires me. I could walk out of my house today, and find an abundance of inspiration by the time I have reached the end of my street. Random images, which cross my mind are captured and integrated into designs. My inspiration has always been the magnanimous glory of nature in sync with the abstract renditions of geometry, and the wonder created by the amalgamation of the two. Historically renowned craftsmen and designers such as Coco Chanel, Alexander McQueen and Graff have always been market leaders in their field, and thus will always be an inspiration for me. It is what you learn from the grand masters trade that you must treasure the most. Their stories, their work — I research it all! For the majority of the masters, their designs rise from their need of diversity, which is common to my work. The brand is said to be synonymous with luxury, beauty, exquisite craftsmanship and quality, can you explain why? BG. Every Bina Goenka piece is bespoke, with a signature trademark of being synonymous with luxury, timelessness and authenticity. My jewellery is eclectic, beautifully artistic and yet easily wearable. It’s the master of luxury, and yet the essence of contemporary elegance. The only rule that I maintain is to continually raise the bar in terms of the superlative best in the quality of raw materials, finish and design detail. Where design is concerned — the sky is the limit — we allow our imagination to take wings to an infinite extent. Can you explain how your designs can be considered timeless, enabling them to be passed down from generation to generation? BG. All Bina Goenka designs are timeless, as they are created to be so. Each piece is born to forever complement a woman’s closet, regardless of seasonal trends. It is the perfect partner for the versatile woman who herself evolves with time, while retaining a classic feel. My challenge is to anticipate her next desire and to cater to it, therefore carrying my own creations forward into timelessness. Do you have a favourite piece? BG. Each and every piece of jewellery that I design and create is like an offspring of my passion. I render all my creations with the same amount of passion and love. Hence, each and every piece, however big or small is special to me.

Which celebrities wear your pieces? BG. Bina Goenka is worn by everyone, from politicians to socialites to celebrities and even cricketers! The brand has found its niche in each customer base, and strives to grow this niche with each upcoming range of designs. My list of high profile clients starts from Bollywood stars such as Sonali Bendre to designers such as Suzanne Roshan. I have designed for cricketers such as Yuvraj Singh and Kevin Pietersen, and ultra high net worth individuals and Indian industrialists such as Rajashree Birla.

74

Ohlala! I October 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

Who do you design for? BG. Initially, I started with the incentive of putting my modern vision onto the typical woman who was able to see this vision through my eyes. My first sale conquered this, eliminating the need to see my designs on a specific persona as this had been achieved. I now design to cater to a larger sphere of the market, creating a ‘by appointment’ service for those seeking further exclusivity, and a more affordable range for those who would still like to be a part of the Bina Goenka family. What type of woman buys Bina Goenka? BG. My client is a particular woman with a specific kind of personality. She is supremely confident, she is a trendsetter. She exudes the essence of contemporary elegance whilst retaining a timeless and classic feel. She is my muse and hence an inspiration.

How do you set about making each piece unique? BG. Bina Goenka pieces use 18-karat gold and precious stones. The factor that distinguishes me from other designers that utilise the same products is my experimentation with these materials. It is an absolute challenge to constantly revamp the same metal, but a challenge that has become a pleasure for me. The stones I choose are sourced from all over the world, and the ones I pick for each piece are completely dependent on what I feel will work for that particular design. As for design, that in itself makes my pieces interesting and unique. Each design tells its own story that can be followed through from consumer to connoisseur alike. Further, the Indian market boasted uniformity and lacked flamboyance. This set me on a path to bring complete flamboyance to a very classic state of making jewellery.

Why will your designs appeal to women in the Middle Eastern region? BG. The Middle East is characterised by a classical culture juxtaposed against an increasingly modern environment. This contrast is mirrored by the design and modern technique that characterise my pieces. The appeal for Bina Goenka pieces is particularly high amongst Middle Eastern consumers due to our basic philosophy of exclusivity, bespoke design, and a contemporary, futuristic look, all of which are the epitome of what the Middle Eastern woman is seeking. Furthermore, the pristine quality of gold and diamonds utilised bridge the gap between fashion and investment, making Bina Goenka jewellery art to be invested in. Today, with fashion standing as a prominent factor within the Middle Eastern woman’s psyche, the Bina Goenka brand has mastered the art of catering to these needs, while making pieces a lucrative investment. My jewellery is as abstract as art, incorporating the understanding of size, weight, design and texture, while being the ultimate compliment to any outfit one may choose to wear.

What are you plans for the region? BG. As part of our expansion plans, Bina Goenka envisions a 2013 launch in the Middle East, where we would like to set up a combination of concession and stand alone boutiques. Currently, Bina Goenka pieces are available at the flagship store, located in the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Mumbai. Additionally, we will soon be launching in the UK. Can you explain more about you 'by appointment only services'? BG. Up to this stage, there has been a dual process in place wherein we have a vast patronage of clients from the Middle East who have visited our flagship store in Mumbai and consequently on the back of this, the demand for private viewings and exhibitions has excelled in these regions. My designs have always been characterised by exclusivity, and my ‘by appointment’ service only furthers this trait. Every client is important to me and I want to design the perfect piece for each one’s requirements. I therefore decided that I would personally extend my gratitude for their respect for my work by offering these services in their region, as a prelude to my permanent presence in the Middle Eastern market. Is there anything you would like to add? BG. I am achieving and yet to achieve more. I’m still a learner and I will learn till the day I go.

Ohlala! goes behindthe-scenes at the Chanel Fall-Winter Ready-toWear Show as Creative Director of Chanel Makeup, Peter Philips shares his inspiration.

Creative Director of Chanel Makeup Peter Philips: The inspiration for the makeup look came from a few key words and a sketch that Karl Lagerfeld provided: minerals, shading and eyebrows were the key words and the sketch showed a face with stone-lined eyebrows. So the focus is on the eyebrows, which led me to interpret Karl's drawing and the "mineral" emphasis by creating straight, graphic eyebrows. I worked with the Maison Lesage to create sets of embroidered eyebrows. Each eyebrow consists of an anthracite gray sequins and pearl base, embroidered with several sorts and shades of mineral stones and crystals. For the makeup in general, I wanted a matte finished skin and used Chanel’s Mat Lumière foundation. The shading and sculpting of the face was achieved with Ombre Contraste, a compact specially created for this show. The compact powder is a lavender/taupe coloured shade called Notorious that I applied to the eyelids and then straight down on the side of the face, in a contouring style. The rest of the face I kept nude, so as to keep the focus on the eyebrows. For the nails I chose the new shade of Le Vernis called Frenzy (2012 Fall Collection), which is totally colour coordinated with Notorious.

F

or most people, the levels of frustration that they feel and complain about can get the better of them. It doesn’t matter if it’s the amount of traffic on the roads, the pressures at work, or the inability of the multi-cultural population to communicate effectively; these things can stress you out. But instead of letting the situation get the better of you, why don’t you turn that negative into something positive: Do some exercise. For example, last night, I was letting a lot of stressful situations frustrate me, and I was getting no further ahead. But instead of letting it get me down, I decided to go for a swim, clear my head, and get a bit of exercise at the same time. It was the perfect cure. I felt much more relaxed after my swim, I accomplished more in the half hour before bed, than I did in the two hours before the exercise. Many people can relate to that kind of day, most of whom have access to swimming pools and fitness facilities where they can go and do something productive; decreasing stress and improving their health at the same time. 82

outside kitchen for the heavy cooking, so the inner kitchen becomes more of a meeting point for the whole family, especially if there is a dining table, or a dedicated space for breakfast, lunch and dinner. When choosing a design that’s right for you, consider your needs first. Do you own lots of cooking utensils and high tech machines and need a place to store all your goodies? Would an island become a catch all, or would it be a great place to prepare a meal? Would a window be pleasant for extra light, or the serenity it would provide?

“The kitchen is, and always will be, the heart of the home.”

Since the kitchen is the most functional area in the house, it requires excellent lighting. The most effective of which involves two layers blended together: task and ambient, or decorative lighting. The end result: a warm and inviting environment that works with other design elements. As a hub for any home, the flooring has much to endure and needs to withstand constant traffic. Make a style statement by using either wood, ceramic tiles, or stone. For a more striking effect, why not try the raw, polished tinted concrete? The cabinet style can also make a big impact. If you want to have a contemporary look, try the simple smooth white cabinets that lean towards a loft appearance in glossy or satin finish, or with wood shaker style doors. If you want a traditional look, raised panel doors will achieve it in oak, cherry, or walnut. Wood cabinets are reminiscent of old country homes. Many kitchen companies have a large variety of models you can choose from. The colour scheme in the kitchen keeps the room alive. It’s best to avoid using bold colours since the bright lights and bustle of activity already provides ample energy in the room. More often a neutral base colour is best used with bold accents. All of the colours will need to work in harmony — from the cabinetry and counters, to the flooring, trim and wall shades. The very best kitchen designs offer efficiency and function along with visual appeal and spaciousness. When all these elements work together, you’ll find the end result satisfying and you’ll be able to truly enjoy your kitchen for years to come.

BMW X3 xDrive35i

A

smaller sibling of the popular X6 and X5, the 2013 model of the X3 has been totally redesigned — with great results! The exterior is sporty and at the same elegant, reflecting the X-series’ modern urban design language. Of course the X3 comes packed with the latest in automotive innovations and technological developments, which BMW are known for. On entering the car you are greeted with contemporary high quality interiors. The X3 has been ergonomically designed to guarantee maximum comfort for both the driver and four passengers in an aesthetically pleasant driving environment. Technology dominates the styling of the console and the BMW’s ConnectedDrive interface with the 8.8 inch high-resolution monitor (largest in it’s segment) works well for controlling all of the X3’s systems. Among the many safety systems the standard equipment inside the new BMW X3 include front, side and curtain head airbags that protect both the driver and the passengers from injury. Also standard are belt latch tensioners and belt force limiters for the front seats. The ISOFIX child seat attachment system, as well as the option of deactivating the front passenger airbag allowing you to put the child seat at the front, make the X3 a great choice for families with small children. The restraint systems are controlled by the central safety electronics, which take into account the type and severity of an accident to trigger the most effective protective features in each case. Very practical also is the reverse camera with the top view — making parking the car a dream in the often cramped car parks of the malls. The drive is wonderful as the car is delightfully nimble and responsive with excellent road grip. Powered by the BMW TwinPower Turbo technology direct injection six-cylinder engine with 306 horsepower, capable of sprinting the car from zero to 100 kilometres per hour in just 5.7 seconds. Precise steering and handling allow drivers to enjoy themselves regardless of road conditions and the X3 is not just a convenient city car but manages just fine in shifty sands of the desert too! The car comes with the Auto Start and Stop technology, which if you’re not used to it, might feel a bit strange at first but you get used to it very quickly and it doesn’t hinder the driving pleasure in any way. Actually it makes you feel good since you are saving petrol (and money!) and contributing towards greener environment as well. As it is, the X3 is definitely one of the most appealing smaller size luxury crossover cars in the market at the moment. And despite being considered “small”, the current model is actually more or less the same size as the previous generation X5. It is very sporty with poised handling and smooth drive that you would expect from a sporty BMW sedan rather than a SUV. The X3 is a superb car for a family, with ample space in the cabin as well as the boot, plenty of advanced features and the efficient engine making it enjoyable ride for everyone. We like!

Turkey

It’s where the West shakes hands with the East. Turkey is a richly historical land with some of the best cuisine you will ever taste. Be sure to take in its magnificent scenery — from stunning architecture to whitesand beaches and soaring mountains. Istanbul Be at the heart of the Ottoman Empire and visit the lavishly decorated Topkapi Palace, explore Byzantine wonders at the Church of St Saviour in Chora, or go for a shopping expedition where you can haggle for carpets, as well as almost anything else you can imagine, at the Grand Bazaar. Bodrum Quite the paradise with its climate, sea, natural beauty, magnificent coves and history, Bodrum is also known for its modern nightlife where the show goes on ‘til the sun comes up!

Cappadocia Stones & Houses Located in Nevşehir Province, central Turkey, a trip to Cappadocia gives you the chance for a unique lodging experience — staying in a cave. Enjoy one of the hotels that are in fact fashioned out of soft volcanic rock formations that have been around for at least two millennia.

GOOD TO KNOW For valuable gifts and souvenirs, such as a carpet, proof of purchase is necessary, together with receipts showing that any currency used in its purchase has been legally exchanged. Also, it is strictly forbidden to export antiques from Turkey. www.goturkey.com. For visa concerns: www.mfa.gov.tr

Copenhagen, Denmark

A friendly and stylish city with gorgeous food and architecture, Copenhagen is also very compact enabling you to see it in a long weekend. Beyond clichéd tourist sites, top-notch contemporary art is proliferating, and its fashion scene is also making waves. After dark, a myriad of innovative restaurants are simply a must-try, most notably Noma, one of the world’s best restaurants.

What to Do & Where Kids A very kid-friendly city, Copenhagen offers free places reserved on buses and trains for prams and pushchairs, children's menus in restaurants, and discounts at all museums, galleries and entertainments. Copenhagen's 100-year-old Tivoli Gardens is a fairytale for kids. There’s also a state-of-the-art Zoo as well as clean harbour baths with children pools and life-guards.

Jordan

Known to be passionate and proud people, Jordanians welcomes visitors with open arms. For most, Jordan begins and ends with the magical ancient Nabataean city of Petra. Yet there's so much more to see — ruined Roman cities, Crusader castles, desert citadels and ancient sites beckon the avid traveller. What to Do & Where

Amman To get a real feel for the country, dig into the jumbled markets and the flow of its capital, Amman. Discover old and new souks, visit the ancient Citadel overlooking the city and not to forget, The Roman Theatre, an impressive remnant of Roman Philadelphia and the highlight of Amman for most foreign visitors.

For the Young & Old Alike Some of the city’s most famous attractions are the statue of The Little Mermaid, and the freetown of Christiania. You can also visit Amalienborg Palace; home to the royal family, or do a guided canal tour on the harbour and walk down the shopping street Strøget.

Nightlife The bar scene in Copenhagen is large and varied. Professional bartenders are ready to serve cold and creative cocktails. A musttry is the city’s very own signature drink — what else but the ‘Copenhagen’!

Good to Know Kastrup, Copenhagen’s modern international airport is located nine kilometers southeast of Copenhagen city centre. You have to note that this is a ‘silent’ airport and there are no boarding calls, although there are numerous monitor screens throughout the terminal. So keep your eyes peeled, if you don’t want to miss your flight! www.visitcopenhagen.com

Jordan Valley & the Dead Sea Conveniently located just an hour from Amman, the Jordan Rift Valley is without a doubt one of the world’s most amazing places. A dramatic, beautiful landscape, which at the Dead Sea is over 400-metres below sea level, it is the lowest point on earth. Besides floating (which you’ll effortlessly do because the Dead Sea is nine to ten times saltier than most bodies of water, a therapeutic mud bath is the other must-do. From pots of oily black mud gathered from the sea floor, dig in and start slathering mud all over your wet body, including your face (avoiding the mouth and eyes). Just across the Dead Sea Highway you can also experience donkey and camel rides. Petra A world wonder, Petra is considered Jordan’s most valuable treasure and greatest tourist attraction. Entrance to the city is through the Siq, a narrow gorge over one-kilometre in length, at the end of which you’ll catch your first glimpse of Al-Khazneh (Treasury). As you enter the Petra valley, you’ll find the massive Nabataean-built, Roman-style theatre, which could seat 3,000 people. Within the site there are also two excellent museums; the Petra Archaeological Park, and the Petra Nabataean Museum. Good to Know Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and a hat to protect you from the sun, and always carry plenty of drinking water. Medical services are excellent in Jordan and most doctors are bilingual in Arabic and English. Larger hotels have a doctor on call and embassies can also suggest doctors and hospitals. www.visitjordan.com

“The dishes are flavourful and immaculately presented.”

O

wned by the same company that owns Genki Sushi and Babaki, The Dragon has received excellent reviews since opening its doors a year ago. Patrons keep coming back as they’ve done an excellent job in maintaining the consistent quality of the food and service — something that can be quite tricky to do. Dragon’s popularity is due to the freshness of the ingredients, which is instantly noticeable due to the full flavours. Filled with an overwhelming selection of tantalising cuisine, the menu excites your taste buds in preparation for the appetising dishes. We sampled a range of mouth-watering starters; Kani Sesame Salad, Shrimp Dumplings, and our personal favourite, Crispy Nori doused in sesame seeds and accompanied by a wasabi mustard dressing. The mains are flavourful and immaculately presented. We recommend the Spicy Salmon Ura, Tokyo Ura and Khaldiya Maki. The latter is perfect for those who enjoy sauce with a little kick. The Spicy Salmon Ura is sensational as well as being über light too; paired with salad, it’s the perfect meal for those watching their waistlines. Dessert was almost an afterthought, as after tasting their delicious soup and teriyaki dish, followed by a menagerie of rolls, we were sufficiently full. However, we still managed to find room to sample the Strawberry Trifle, which was a divine blend of creamy, sweet flavours. We are told that regular customers usually order the curries (yes, surprisingly), and the Golden Dragon, Kani Furai, Tokyo Maki and Shrimp Teriyaki also prove to be popular. Overall, the food is light, fresh and extremely appetising, whilst the portions are generous enough to be shared by two. The atmosphere is inviting, and mostly sees a younger crowd, but of course everyone’s welcome. The staff are friendly and know the menu by heart, which enables them to make excellent recommendations — when you’re in doubt over what to choose. The Dragon’s exceptional service provides for the most memorable dining experience.

Right On Track

Fresh from his numerous shows last month, Ohlala! caught up with DJ Huss to talk about how he started with his craft, the evolution of his music and his burning desire to continually explore new musical frontiers. 98

Ohlala! I October 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

“Life will always throw stress your way, so you might as well have fun with what you’re doing because it’s not everyday that you can do so.”

F

or close to two decades now, dabbling with his DJ skills whilst studying for his BA and MBA in Florida, DJ Huss could be considered one of the foremost DJs experimenting with electronic music in Bahrain. His musical journey began at the age of ten, a time he recalls listening to his brothers and sisters play Boney M, ABBA, The Bee Gees and Bob Marley among others. “I was mesmerised by the feelings it brought to me and I couldn’t stop exploring all kinds of music, and hope to continue to do so,” he says. Bahraini Hussain ‘DJ Huss’ Alsairafi started his career miles apart from DJ-ing — he was a banker for 16 years. The job gave him a high-figure salary and a chance to make even more money whilst doing it, but before that happened, he decided to leave banking for good. “It was the tremendous stress, the long hours and routine of it all, that made me decide to quit. For me, it’s all about wanting to live more with less,” he quips. So these days ,when he’s not in Bahrain, he’s travelling and taking numerous adventures (he’s into quite a lot of outdoor sports) — bringing his laptop symphony to clubs, festivals and everything in between. In order to keep ahead of the pack, DJ Huss says it’s important to always be open to new ideas in order to incorporate them into music — never to be afraid to explore experimental production methods and unconventional soundscapes. “I keep my ears and options open to different types. A track with just a good beat is not enough. The feel and the structure of the whole is more important than just one element,” he enthuses. Depending on the venue, the occasion, the crowd, the mood of the event and a few other factors, DJ Huss plays Lounge and Chillout, or other various genres including but not limited to House, Tech-House, Progressive and Trance. On his website, which has four different categories for podcasts or sets, ‘The Main’ is mostly House, Techhouse, Deep House, and Progressive, whilst ‘The Chillout’ is mostly Lounge and Chillout. ‘The Funk’ covers mostly Funky House, whilst ‘The Melting Pot’ series is a blend of all types. DJ Huss plans to focus more on events, not only within Bahrain, but internationally as well. He’s also setting his sights on building a home studio in order to immerse himself in music production, and although he says it will be a long journey, he’s sure that he “will enjoy every step”. DJ Huss’ career as a DJ is simply on its way to a major upswing. Who and what are your influences? DJ Huss: Life and my many experiences influence the music I choose to play. The influence of various artists at

different points on my journey is always changing, and together they create an accumulative effect. From the local scene, DJs like Derek, Salime, Milad, HK, Sami Dee, FawazO, Youss, Sabah Al Sadeqi, Damian D’Costa, Ghazi, Ricardo M, Yousif, Daniel and Mr K (Karim Miknas) have always blessed my ears with amazing music and exceptional style. Other DJs that I have always admired are Chang from Florida and Jade from Beirut.

What gear are you using? DJ H: I started with turntables, which were much harder to learn on and required heavy practice. The analogue sound is different and the feel is magical. I switched to CDs and used Pioneer equipment for many years. After that, I tried many controllers, including virtual DJ, Torq, Serato, and finally Traktor. Currently, I use Pioneer CDJ 2000 and Traktor S4 controller. Equipment is just a tool, and anyone who is interested in DJing, should use whatever is suitable and works best for them. What images and emotions do you want your music to invoke in the listener? DJ H: I aim to invoke happy and bouncy feelings that people share, which enable them to feel closer to each other with a ‘Oneness’ kind of connection. Once you feel the synergy on the dance floor, you will always want it again. Do you see your music as a universal language? DJ H: My point of view on music goes beyond ownership. I don’t own the music and many artists produce the music for the purpose of sharing it with the world, thus, it is a universal language and transcends cultural and geographical borders.

Any tips you’d like to share with young producers and DJs out there? DJ H: Everything takes time, dedication and determination. The learning process can be enjoyable if approached the right way. I also suggest to keep an open mind and consider all types of music and to listen with your heart. Connecting with sound is amazing and expands your horizons. Learning is a never-ending process. And as with many other aspects of life, time management is essential. Remember too that life will always throw stress your way, so you might as well have fun with what you’re doing. Last but not least, don’t reinvent the wheel, talk to and watch other DJs to learn as much as possible. With the recently concluded Candee Beach party at Amwaj Marina and N-Joy in Brazil Lounge last month, you can catch DJ Huss spinning his magic on the decks at the POSH event in Muju on October 5. This month sees you going through a series of life-altering events that, whilst leaving you temporarily anxious, will eventually turn out to be rewarding in many different ways. There will also be time for reflection and regret. Libras — at a glance

Libras love to be the centre of attention and gravitate towards anyone or anything that satisfies that desire. This can sometimes push their ego to the fore and present them in poor light, when in truth they are quite nice people to be around. Although they appear very confident, this is often just a façade but inside they can be fragile and uncertain. Lovers of art, Libras also take pride in their appearance. With an acute attention to detail and often perfectionists in everything they do, they can sometimes frustrate as much as satisfy but overall, Libras make fascinating company and are never boring to be around.

Aquarius (January 20 – February 18) October promises to be a difficult month, as your plans are thrown into confusion by the illness of a child or family matter, directly impacting on your day to day routines. How you go about dealing with this determines the level of uncertainty you experience so try to remain practical and balanced in your outlook. On the work side, career changes are proving satisfying and you are feeling better appreciated for all your efforts. This in turn is firing your creativity, helping you to produce some of your best work so far.

Aries (March 20 – April 19) After what seems an age of trials and challenges, you finally enter October with a sense of purpose to your life again — invigorating your creativity and desire to succeed. Moving home, a change of career and a better overall balance are all leading to much better rewards — opening up even more opportunities. The key area of improvement will be in your finances, as you return a little order to monetary affairs and begin to save more than you spend. The good times are back so make the most of them.

GEMINI (May 21 – June 20) Some of you may have bitten off a lot more than you can chew this month but, before you start looking for someone else to blame, take responsibility and analyse the best way you can get out of the financial mess you’re in. Trying to unearth a quick-fix, short-term solution isn’t the way forward either. This needs careful thought and sensible planning, so you don’t find yourself back in the same mess again. LEO (July 23 – August 22) Opportunities have come your way over the last few months but you appear to have wasted them all in one way or another. You now have reached a crisis point and you could be down to your last chance so think wisely before making any kind of commitment! Free yourself of the past, especially romantic attachments that are clearly over and move on to the next phase in your life. If you live in yesterday’s shadow then you will never move on to where you really want to be. 108

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21) Your life right now has lost an element of direction and as such, you find yourself drifting, without a real plan. You need to put aside all the distractions and map out where you want to go and what you want to do — at least for the immediate future. There’s no point labouring on under a cloud of uncertainty and equally, this sense of dissatisfaction will never be removed unless you address it. Others are there to help you but firstly you need to display a desire for change. Feeling sorry for yourself won’t get you anywhere.

Capricorn (December 22 – January 19) You’ve come a long way in recent months and a year that began with confusion and uncertainty is slowly moving towards balance and solidity. Financially you feel optimistic with certain investments you have made. You may also find yourselves one step further up the property ladder and in these uncertain times it’s quite a favourable move. Your relationship with work colleagues has also improved of late, although the one area where there is still a fairly gaping hole is romance. Mr Right is still waiting!

Pisces (February 19 – March 19) The recent arrival of a family member is set to liven up your home life, at least in the short term, as you host a young visitor for October. Although you may have been initially wary of the proposition, this will be a rewarding experience for all the family and by the end of their stay you will be genuinely sorry to see them leave. On the relationship front, a partner’s stressful outlook is likely to impact you negatively. Try to talk matters through. October 17 could be a key date in this regard so be aware! Taurus (April 20 – May 20) October will offer a number of opportunities and if you invest the time you will reap many rewards before the year is out. A recent purchase of some significance will turn out to have been a wise investment and after a few hurdles are overcome, you will feel vindicated by a choice that many others may have considered risky. A long-term project will enable you to sign a contract and once done, you need to ensure you are not distracted from your purpose because this could prove the big winner for you in 2012. Cancer (June 21 – July 22) Love is the number one issue on your mind this month. A chance encounter whilst travelling will prove the catalyst for something very special in your life and heralds the start of exciting times ahead for you. But think carefully about rushing into anything too quickly — it is in your nature to fall in love. If you have questions, don’t bottle them up inside. Find out everything you can in advance so there is less room for surprises later!

Virgo (August 23 — September 22) Travel is high on the agenda and those of you who have embarked on journeys further afield are set for some interesting and rewarding experiences. Take some time to remember and appreciate the people who have got you to where you are. No man is an island and without the commitment of others, you certainly would not be where you are today. On the work front you could be presented with a fantastic opportunity on October 19, so consider it seriously before making a decision.

irst of all (and finally) bougi.net is LIVE. Have a wander through the online home and do let me know your thoughts on the general interior. We continue to upgrade and play, shift and excel, but for introductory purposes, all is thankfully set. Second, I do declare that Emmanuel Jal's We Want Peace campaign set a new level of peace-building excellence in South Sudan on September 20 and 21. The world-renowned campaign, focused on championing and building all necessary facets of peace, saw two epic events take place in the superstar's hometown of Juba, highlighting International Peace Day. Emmanuel successfully managed to merge the business, humanitarian, government and diplomatic sectors under one necessary purpose of developing an agenda in social responsibility. On September 20, His Excellency Vice President of South Sudan, Dr Riek Machar, hosted the high profile ‘We Want Peace’ Business Gala dinner at Juba's Independence Hall. The anticipated affair saw many of South Sudan's senior government ministers, UN representatives, international dignitaries as well as the country's established and growing businesses come together on a pledge towards ‘responsible investment’ — longterm development and self-sustainability in South Sudan. On September 21, International Peace Day, Emmanuel headlined a celebratory concert alongside friend and special guest Darryl ‘DMC’ McDaniels. A historical moment in music, this was the first time the legendary artist visited and performed on African soil.

In what has already been labelled as "the best music show Juba's ever seen" (Voice of America) the ‘Go Peace’ crowd of fans witnessed a string of hits from both hip hop greats, including an encore to end all encores, where Emmanuel and DMC duetted live (again, d for the first time) with ‘WWP RELOADED’, nks an ig tha B . s e n o Emmanuel’s newly released international ainted and-p peace anthem featuring other notable an: H big love. p a J from friends such as Alicia Keys, George Clooney, Gifts Kofi Annan and more.
