Dress to Impress

Blending luxury, style and a taste of Arabia, a group of new generation Qatari designers will be presenting their latest designs at the Gate Mall’s first ever fashion show, Dress to Impress, this month.

D

ress to Impress’s purpose is to help young, local Qatari fashion designers as well as expatriate designers who live in Qatar, to promote their products, giving them the chance to come together and become known in the country. Dress to Impress has been organised by three Qatari ladies, Shaikha Al Mudahka, Al Anood Al Thani, Haneen Abdulrahman, who are due to open their own events company in 2013. It is co-organised by Shaikha Hend Al Qassmi, the owner of a fashion event company. 24-year old event co-organiser Shaika Al Mudahka says, "Al Anood, Haneen and I always talked about opening our own events company, We have all volunteered at events and organised private events before but the fashion show is the first official event we have organised, so it's exciting. We haven't decided on a name yet but we will be launching in early 2013. "With the mantra 'Make a Difference', our ‪mission is to deliver quality, and show customers how magnificent their event could be, aiming to make a difference in everyone's lives, and of course it will all be done with a smile."‬ Taking place on November 30 to December 1, the two-day event will see clothes designed by recent fashion graduates of Virginia Commonwealth Univeristy Qatar and other known fashion institutes. Designers include Latifa Al Mudahka who owns Moda Key, Salieh with his own Salzakih label, Fahad Al Obaidly of Fumee Fashion, Muneera Mubarak Al Dolaimi of Las Tres, Selina Farooqie of Selina Farooqie Fashion, and Aisha Al Naimi of Aishaz Abaya among others. The event starts at 4pm on both days, with the fashion shows themselves from 7pm until 9pm. There will be an opening ceremony on day one where visitors will be welcomed and introduced to the Dress to Impress exhibits and fashion show. The event ends at 10pm on both days.

The designers

Fahad Al Obaidly Inspired by fashion and driven to succeed. Fahad Al Obaidly studied at the Instituto Marangoni in Milan before launching his own label of menswear, Fumee Fashion. With a couple of fashion shows under his belt, this young designer will stop at nothing to become a name in the fashion world both within and beyond Qatar.

Muneera Mubarak Al Dolaimi Chic, elegant styles from Arabia for Arabian women. The name ‘Las Tres’, meaning ‘the three’ in Spanish, comes from Muneera’s inspiration in the form of her three daughters who encouraged her to become a designer. A mix of folklore and modern touches to suit the modern Arabian woman, Muneera’s designs started with the Jalabiya and Mini Dara'ah, casual dresses and designs for special occasions. Selina Farooqie Luxury to die for. Selina adds a touch of luxury to all her designs making them very much sought-after pieces. With recent fashion shows in Istanbul, Dubai and Doha, Selina personalises her designs to suit her customers, making them come back for more.

Latifa Al Mudakha A design mentor for the next generation. Latifa is a Qatari fashion designer who is passionate about her work, and passionate about helping young fashion designers get off the ground, by supporting and organising events for them. Latifa will be exhibiting her own designs with her new line LFM at the event. Salieh Dramatic, edgy and above all fun. Another young Qatari designer, Salieh’s brand Salzakih targets the 18

to 30 age group and focuses on the dramatic, edgy and fun. ‘Daring group being different’ is his motto, so Alexander McQueen watch out, there’s new competition in the market.

Saleh Abdulrahman Keeping it in the family. Half Bahraini half Qatari, Saleh attributes her love of fashion and design to her mum Zakia Al Mudakha who designs women’s clothing in Qatar. Saleh focuses on menswear and will be bringing her range of sporty looking suits to the event. “My ambition is to become a successful Arab designer. Arab designers are just emerging but hopefully in a few years we will be recognised worldwide.”

Aisha Adel Al-Naemi Abayas with an Aisha twist. Inspired by high end brands such as Valentino, Lanvin and Alexandra Rich, Aisha started designing dresses before returning to her roots with her own collection of abayas —Aisha’z Abayas. In the last two years she has gathered a steady following of customers and made a name for herself among designers in Doha. For more information call 5598 8539.

THE CAUSE

More than just good friends

Best Buddies Qatar reaches out to every boy, girl, man and woman and says, “You too can be part of something wonderful and worthwhile if you try.” My buddy and I hang out and play video games, and it feels good, it changes your perception of life,” explains Mubarak Bin Hamad Al-Thani, communications manager at Best Buddies Qatar, a non-profit organisation which brings people with intellectual disabilities (ID) and able-minded people together for friendship, support and mutual gain. Mubarak adds, “You know we have problems, you, me, all of us, financial problems, emotional problems, we have problems in our lives but when we look at this kid who is challenged forever, I mean forever, and he is smiling and laughing and joking, you feel that life has more, that your problems are nothing.” Best Buddies was launched in Miami, USA by Anthony Kennedy Shriver, the nephew of the late president John F Kennedy, in 1989, and the organisation has expanded with programs in 60 countries to date. Best Buddies Qatar was launched in 2008 and started operating in 2010, with the purpose of encouraging people without intellectual disabilities to become buddies with those who have mild to moderate intellectual disabilities, helping them to become part of society,

29

THE CAUSE learn new skills, take part in activities they might not get the chance to in their day to day lives, but also helping to change attitudes to disability in society at large. Mubarak joined Best Buddies in 2011 on the invitation of the general manager Laalei Abu Alfeen, and has not looked back since. He tells us, “Since I came to work here, everything has changed, and I have a more positive outlook on life, and we learn lessons every day, but of course there are challenges too.” Mubarak admits that, “It is hard to know exactly how many people have ID in Qatar due to cultural issues, we are struggling to get people to come out of the box and admit that they have cases at home. “They look at it diffrently, you have to be in their shoes to understand. For example, a father would say, 'Why would I bring my son to come here and do events with you whilst he could be at home having fun with his brothers?' But I say no, this is social inclusion, the hour that he will spend here with us, for this kid, it is probably the best time he has had in a long time, because he’s interacting with people he didn’t know before. “The mission is to include them in society because they have been excluded for thousands of years and it’s time to stand up and say no. And Qatar is leading in this field. Fortunately we are blessed with having Her Highness Sheikha Moza Bint Nasser here who is taking care of this movement to encourage social inclusion and improve perceptions.” Mubarak explains to Ohlala! the process for new ‘Buddies’, “Let’s say that you want to be a member of Best Buddies, I organise a matching party and see if you can match with somebody, and if you click with them then you become buddies, and if you don’t, then we find somebody else. Then you stay in touch with your buddy, you have to phone them once a week, and do an activity once a month together, like going to the cinema. And we do events for them here, and outside.” As well as an array of activities and events from cupcake baking, to soccer, bowling and volleyball, the organisation also runs Buddy programs in schools, colleges and universities, and a job program to help school leavers with ID into employment. To become a buddy or for more information you can call the office on 4466 6095, or visit the Best Buddies website www.bestbuddies.org.qa.

Art & Culture

Salahi's homecoming As only the second retrospective exhibition by an African artist globally, Ibrahim El Salahi’s ‘A Visionary Modernist,’ which opened in Katara on October 4, is a defining moment for African art, for Katara, and for the artist himself as Josie Hill finds out.

32

Ohlala! I November 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

I

t is a homecoming of sorts for this octogenarian icon of African art, since a stint in prison in his home country in 1975 forced him to seek exile in Qatar where he stayed for the best part of 20 years. “It is fantastic to see the change here," says Ibrahim. "When I came in 1977 things were a bit simple, now we have tried to find the houses that we lived in back then, but they are no longer there.” Born in Omdurman, Sudan in 1930 Ibrahim first studied art at the School of Design at Gordon Memorial College in Khartoum, and then went to the Slade School of Fine Art in London before returning to Sudan where he emerged as a leader in the modernist art movement of the time — the Khartoum School. Under the dictatorship of General Numieri, Ibrahim was imprisoned in 1975 without trial, accused of anti-government activities, and upon his release he fled to Qatar, and then later moved to Oxford where he lives today. Qatari Colour Speaking about artistic inspiration for local artists Ibrahim says, "If I were working here now I would be interested in colour. The colour is wonderful, because you can see colour, though the light is strong, very strong indeed. Whereas in Sudan you find it difficult, I had to look down and look at the colour of the earth, but up with the sky and the reflection on the water, it’s so glaring on the eye. Here I found it easy, I used to go to Wakra quite often, and I toured around the country, I know Qatar very well I’m glad to say, but the colour is something else and I find it in the work of the local artists here, their sense of colour is really wonderful."

Artistic approach Having lived and studied art in various locations around the world, Ibrahim has drawn inspiration from various sources, which is reflected in his artistic approach at different periods in his career. His early work featured ornamental designs on Koranic texts, then drawings inspired by Cezanne, Pisarro and Seurat, later the rich earthy colours of Sudan, then the stark and introspective black and white images following his stint in prison, and more recently work inspired by the lush British countryside; all of which form part of the exhibition at Katara. For his latest work, yet to be exhibited, Ibrahim has sought inspiration from a trip to Andalusía, Spain. He tells us, “Some people say you should not blur the boundaries between different art forms, but I do not see why not. I have always been keen to make a connection between the different senses, visual and sound. When I was in Andalusia I found that the Flamenco dancers made music

with their feet, so I concentrated on their feet and their shoes, and then patterns and certain motifs you can get this clip clop sound. And so I was very, very happy when a young lady at the Tate Modern said 'I hear music'. I thought, the purpose of the painting has reached the viewer."

Educating the next generation Alongside ‘A Visionary Modernist,’ and as part of Katara's overarching goals of inspiring young people and educating the next generation of Qatari artists, there will be an educational program of events. Katara's Curator of Visual Arts Exhibitions and Educational Programs Sa'id Costa says, "The program will try to engage not only the community in general but also Qatari schools, which will visit the exhibition and undertake workshops, following some of the themes the exhibition is raising, such as colour, dimension and conceptual themes. "But also there are artists in residency that are going to be here, and next week they will be touring the exhibition, so we will be trying to pass to them some of the content and the concepts. Words of wisdom As an authoritative voice on African and Arabic art, Ibrahim has some simple advice for the aspiring Qatari artists of tomorrow: “All that I would say is keep working and exhibiting and it is going to happen sooner or later. Be true to yourself and don’t forget your heritage because it’s the most important thing to link up the past and the future. "I think I was advised first by my father, and second by my teacher at the art college in Sudan, to be observant and to observe everything that goes on around you and respect your heritage. Many people think that it’s not effective but to know this is to know your culture and to link up with your own people. It is well known that artists should address three bodies: one, know yourself; two, know others; and three, know the universe. And if you can hit all three birds with one stone you will be perfect.” ‘A Visionary Modernist’ will run until November 27 at Katara, Building 22. The exhibition features approximately 80 works encompassing over five decades of the artist’s career, with drawings and paintings from international institutions and private collections. The exhibition, which is organised by the Museum of African Art in New York, first opened in Sharjah Art Museum, UAE in March 2012.

33

Woman in Power “I would like to advise the young Qatari women stepping into the world of opportunities to be patient and not to lose sight of their goal. Patience pays off.”

‘You can have it all, just not all at the same time.’ Commercial Bank of Qatar’s (CBQ) Central Regional Manager, Reham Sabri Thawabi, talks to Ohlala!’s Josie Hill about doing it all, doing right by yourself, and helping inspire a few other women along the way. 34

Ohlala! I November 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

A

t 42, a mother of three children, and with a successful 17-year-long career in banking under her belt, you could easily be fooled into thinking that Reham was one of those students who knew from day one their chosen path in life. But it wasn’t always so clear cut. “Actually I studied medicine for one year,” explains Reham, “but I got too emotionally involved. Then I did one year of engineering, but it was too rigid for me. So I majored in economics and minored in marketing.” Half-Jordanian, half-Egyptian and born and brought up in Qatar, Reham tells us that she has always been interested in global affairs, people and relationships. “I grew up with Qatari values as I’ve lived all of my life here, except for the four years when I studied at The American University in Cairo. I am inspired by Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser Al Misnad. The way she manages her personal and public roles is impressive. She is definitely an inspiration to all young Qatari women and Arab women at large.” Commenting on her graduation, Reham says, “I thought I would do marketing, but instead I became a currency trader in Egypt where I worked for one year before I came here. But my dad said to me, ‘This is awful, you are not getting enough sleep. You wake up with the Japanese market and go to bed with the American.’ He told me that I needed to ‘find a proper job, and work in a bank’.” It turned out to be good advice for Reham, who got a job with Commercial Bank in 1995, where she still works today. After seven years as an investment adviser, then another seven working in Sadara wealth management (affluent banking), it was Reham’s people skills that saw her become the Central Regional Manager in charge of 13 branches in Doha. She admits, “Of course I’ve had ups and downs, there were times when I worked really long hours, but when I was pregnant I tried to stick to the minimum seven hours.” And it was while working in her current role that Reham was approached by the British Council (BC) in Qatar’s Springboard program, to do some training for staff in the bank. Springboard is a personal and work development program to help women realise their potential. The program invites women like Reham to become mentors or guest speakers. She tells us, “I said yes and I did the course as well before I became a mentor. Actually, I thought I would not benefit from it because I have already been there, but I did benefit. “In some ways I fully accepted the fact that I was a woman. For example, before I used to hide the fact I was pregnant even until quite late on. I also accepted the fact that I needed some me time. I need to have my share of unwinding, so I can extend my help to

others. So now I have one day per week with my husband, and one day just for me, or three good hours to do something for myself. “I also accepted that it’s ok if I feel down sometimes. Life is a cycle, like the economy, sometimes you feel that you are happy with yourself, as a woman, as a working mum and so on, and sometimes you don’t feel satisfied with your own performance, and when you feel this, you need to stop and write down your priorities.” Reham takes a piece of paper and sketches out her roles, and they are many: Reham equals daughter, wife, mother, sister, banker and daughterin-law. She explains, “I have to make time for all these relationships and roles in my life and finally and most importantly, I have to do what is right in the eyes of God.” And when she can find the time in between all her many roles, Reham is still a guest speaker on the Springboard program where she encourages women to be true to themselves, embrace their skills and qualities, and help to support each other. “Last but not least, I would like to advise the young Qatari women stepping into the world of opportunities to be patient and not to lose sight of their goals. Patience pays off.” And, spoken like one who has been there and done that, Reham adds with a smile, “Women can have it all, they just can’t have it all at the same time.”

As lovers of fashion, makeup and all things beauty related, Ohlala! was given the opportunity to speak with one of the Arab world’s most knowledgeable ladies in this field, beauty and makeup expert, Joelle Mardinian. She talks about memories of her beginnings, her philosophy on life and what’s in store for the future. 36

Ohlala! I November 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

hlala! caught up with Joelle whilst appearing as a guest celebrity beauty expert in last month’s ‘All Eyes on You’ fashion lounge event organised by Moda Mall at the Bahrain World Trade Centre and co-sponsored by Ohlala! It’s easy to see why throngs of fans flocked to the mall and queued up to get their picture taken with Joelle. She exuded not only beauty and class, but an aura that tells you she is a woman who is determined to succeed. Moda Mall’s ‘All Eyes on You’ event in Bahrain saw Joelle offering her beauty tips and advice to an enthusiastic audience. A live makeover was done with two of her Maison de Joelle beauty specialists — revealing two of the season’s most stylish hair and makeup looks. The ultra-fashionable event paved the way for Joelle’s second visit to the island and she was more than pleased: “The reason why I love Bahrain so much is that its people are so warm and so genuine and they’re very approachable. I feel really at home and I have a great time when I’m in Bahrain, I think people truly welcome me and I would love to open a salon in Bahrain. There isn’t a plan to open one immediately, but I think next year, a project for Maison de Joelle will start in the kingdom.” Joelle’s beginnings as a top beauty expert wasn’t a walk in the park. Starting her career as a professional makeup artist in London meant she had to work extremely hard — almost always for free, so she could make a name for herself. Competition is really high in the British capital, and Joelle says, “It was the most difficult part of my career. In London no one will take you seriously if you don’t have a portfolio, and to get one, you’ve got to actually convince a photographer to hire you for a job; you’ve got to convince a model to hire you to do her makeup. So the best thing I did was to actually collaborate with photographers who didn’t have a budget and did the same thing with models, who didn't want to pay for their makeup to be done.” By the time she had built up enough projects to showcase in her portfolio, Joelle had a chance meeting with a lady on The Tube (the London underground transport system). This would later spell the massive success that later followed her in life. She recounts: “I was very lucky to have met the right person — this lady asked me if I would be interested to do a photoshoot for Sony Music Records. So I did my first job with Sony for an American band called ‘Signature’. After that, they loved my work, they loved my attitude, and they kept on hiring me to do other jobs. And that’s how my career started in London. But I have to say that it was very tough for about two years, not making any money, just offering my services for free, so I could actually have the opportunity to build a portfolio.” From a challenging start but eventually successful career path in the British capital all those years ago, Joelle is now a renowned TV personality on MBC’s weekly reality show entitled, Joelle, as well as a prominent makeup artist and a leading beauty expert in the Middle East. Her determination has clearly paid off and currently Joelle is also the official regional creative director for Max Factor. Her very own chain of salons, Maison de Joelle, now has branches

in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Riyadh, and most recently, in Doha. Joelle has revealed that plans to open one in Bahrain next year maybe in the offing. Apart from running a successful business, another fascinating side to Joelle is her involvement with women’s and other causes. In 2010, she was given the Arab Woman of the Year award for her success and accomplishments throughout the Middle East. Joelle says of the accolade: “It was a really nice award to receive. I think I was the only non-Gulf lady during the event. Most of the ladies were from the Gulf region. So I really appreciated the award. I was shocked, I was happy, I was excited and I think I would love to earn more awards like that in the future. "What I want to do is to start projects that I really believe in, and then turn them into a success story. I work very hard to make sure that my show, my salons, any other projects that I’m doing are actually successful. I really care about my work and all I want is for people to actually praise what I do and to enjoy the services that I’m offering.” So what motivates her to do what she does? “I really have no idea,” came her quick response, adding, “all I know is that deep inside, every time I accomplish something, a new project arises and I start to want more. I really cannot explain it. But what I can explain is that I look at people who have achieved so much more than I have, and I feel that until now I have really achieved nothing, and this tells me that there is so much more that I can do. “As long as God gives me the health and the willingness to work, I will keep on coming up with projects, and I will make sure that it will turn into a success story. I simply want to achieve something in life. I don’t know how to sit back, I’m not good at relaxing even though I crave holidays and to be able to relax, but I can’t have such a life because I’m always coming up with new projects, which need a lot of my attention. I think I will probably relax when there are no more ideas in my head and no more projects to be done.” Coming towards the end of our chat, we asked Joelle about her philosophy on beauty. Joelle shares with us that, “For sure it is to look after what God’s given you, which is your skin, your hair, your nails, your body, your health, your nutrition. It’s looking after the essentials. I really encourage women to follow a good skincare regime, to get facials on a regular basis, to do hair treatments on a regular basis, to eat well, drink lots of water and get enough rest and sleep.” Of course, we couldn’t let her go without giving you our beloved readers her take on the hottest trends for the autumn winter season. “A lot of leather is fashionable, whether it’s a skirt, trousers or a jacket. High gloves right up to the shoulder are also in, and the dark, seaweed green colour is really trendy, as well as feathers and black. “I think people should just go to the stores, try on as many items as possible to really find out what suits them and what they feel good in, and that’s what they should purchase. "People should not be too obsessed with fashion. Of course, it’s nice to be trendy at all times, but we don’t have to copy the catwalk because that’s not necessarily what designers intend for the ordinary woman. We have to take pieces from the catwalk and then apply them to our original wardrobe choices.”

“It was very tough for about two years, not making any money, just offering my services for free, so I could actually have the opportunity to build a portfolio.”

AN Exotic Touch

Architect turned shoe designer, Anas Younis Shanaah, is the creative genius behind the Arabic inspired designer label aennis eunis. Kirsty Edwards-Harris catches up with him at Saks Fifth Avenue, Bahrain, to explore his unique and eccentric creations.

etermined to parade to the fashion world Arabian creativity, Anas Shannah is taking the region by storm, bringing a unique and exotic touch to his “must-have” designer shoes and accessories — aennis eunnis. His stylish and exquisite flavour is already far-reaching; popular amongst celebrities and royals, including Queen Rania of Jordan, who adore the fresh and trendy brand. Playing with rich colours, fabrics and techniques, aennis eunnis offers a breathtaking collection for the new autumn winter season. By adding special touches and unique detailing, Anas Shannah ensures each creation is a work of art in its own right. He blends fluidly influences from the East and West combining Arabian creative flair with Italian expertise.

“I first was known as the designer who introduced calligraphy to leatherwear. That remains my signature approach.”

Why did you decide to turn your hand from architecture to shoe design? Anas Younis Shanaah. I’ve always wanted to design smaller objects that I have full control over. This is why I did my masters degree in product design. Shoes and bags, in a way, fall under the same category to me. I look at each design as an object, with complex structures, materials, textures and visual appeal. In what ways does your architectural background influence you as a shoe designer? AYS. Architecture is a great base for any design field. It teaches basic design ingredients and focuses on a conceptual approach and pure composition. I take pride in the way we work with fashion, because none of my team members are fashion designers. We all have a totally different approach to fashion accessories, which comes from architecture. Which celebrities wear your creations? AYS. Her Majesty Queen Rania has always been my ultimate example of elegance. We were honoured when she held our ‘signature’ clutch bag on Jordan’s Independence Day this past May. We design one-off pieces as we did for Her Majesty.

“I am proud to show the richness of my Middle Eastern heritage in trendy pieces of fashion.”

What are the trends throughout your collection for autumn winter? AYS. We have used Damascus fabrics in this Fall Winter Collection. However, we chose a ‘playful’ approach in the way we portrayed it. Sometimes through a pinch, or a twist… or any other form of manipulation we applied to the upper part of the shoe. From where did you draw your inspiration for this season? AYS. We always have our ‘signature’ line that is based on Arabic calligraphy. You will find a couple of new styles, or new colours, always in every new collection. This season we wanted to add colour through fabrics.

Which fabrics do you choose to work with and why? AYS. This season we chose to use Damascus fabrics in a subtle way to give that richness we want to explore. Fabrics from Damascus are embodied with an intense and opulent pattern. We wanted to focus on it because it adds even more of a luxury feel to plain leather. Historically, these patterns have been part of our culture. It is easy to relate to them. It is also interesting to see the same fabric once used on a ‘jallabeyah’, now in footwear, treated and applied to skillful Italian-made pieces. I like that we actually shipped the original fabrics to Italy for them to work with. What is unique about your designs? AYS. I was first known as the designer who introduced calligraphy to leatherwear. That remains my signature approach. I believe, however, that with every collection you will always see references from my background, even if not in calligraphy. I am proud to show the richness of my Middle Eastern heritage in trendy pieces of fashion. I will stick to this as my main direction going forward.

Tell us more about your new folding technique. AYS. I don’t think I have reinvented the wheel here. I just chose to explore many tricks, to play with leather and fabrics 66

Ohlala! I November 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

to serve the point of ‘now you see it, now you don’t’. But when most pieces in the collection have that same spirit, I guess it seems like it is something new. Why do your creations appeal to the Gulf region? AYS. Out of all Middle Eastern nations, I believe that people in the Gulf are proud to be Arabs and don’t mind showing it. You see it in their outfits, their architecture, and in their homes. They probably responded to the message that I am delivering better than others.

In what ways has your eclectic mix of cultural experiences influenced your designs? AYS. I would like to believe that I see the larger picture. I have lived in both East and West cultures, and have seen how the best of both is a great balance. I know what is expected in the West, and what can be delivered from the East. I lived the richness in our culture (the music, the spices, the details, etc.) and I can pick and choose what works best for a larger platform of audience.

What is your favourite design for this season? AYS. They all come from the same source, so it is hard sometimes to pick. However, the Calligraphy collection is always my preferred line. It is truly what the brand stands for! What are your aspirations for the future? AYS. I have many fans/customers in Europe and the USA. I know that my designs work everywhere. I am aiming to expand further into those markets as I already have begun to do. Hopefully soon our designs will be found in all major cities in the world ‘inshallah’.

Will we be seeing other accessories being added to you repertoire? AYS. Handbags are already always part of our collections. I would like to venture into other accessories soon (I would probably start with perfume, sunglasses, belts, etc.). I think I will wait until we are in second gear before I spread myself too thin though. How would you describe your style? AYS. Sophisticated, trendy, with a story behind it.

Tell us something not many people know about you AYS. I can easily shed a tear… (I’m on the emotional side).

Is there anything that you would like to add? AYS. My main link to design in my studio has always been music. We start discussions about the collection by choosing musical pieces that represent the concept clearly. It is almost like homework every designer on the team goes through.

“Out of all Middle Eastern nations, I believe that people in the Gulf are proud to be Arabs and don’t mind showing it. You see it in their outfits, their architecture, and in their homes.”

SHAPE UP Getting in tip-top shape takes a lot of hard work. But with perseverance, and just a little bit of research, your efforts will surely pay off. Craig Bunting gives advice on two areas of the body that most women find problematic.

O

ne of the most common complaints that women have when it comes to their bodies is the area on the back of the arms, otherwise known as the ‘Bingo Wings’. Another problem area on the upper body is the chest, specifically when it starts to drop. Unfortunately, women are at a disadvantage when it comes to both areas, and what it really comes down to is the hormone, testosterone. Typically, most women don’t put on muscle like men do, and testosterone is the main reason why they can’t. When you compare the two genders, women are much more similar to men on the lower limbs, but differ on the upper parts of the body. So how do you fix this problem? The answer: resistance training. Simply put, women have to work more on the muscles under the flab. This is often a Catch 22, as a lot of women are fearful that by using resistance training, they will become big, bulky and unfeminine. Nothing could be further from the truth.

“A lot of women are fearful that by using resistance training, they will become big, bulky and unfeminine. Nothing could be further from the truth.”

A lot of this comes down to a person’s genetics. Just look at how many guys lift weights, and how many of them fail in their quest to be the next cover model for Men’s Health, or the new Arnold Schwarzenegger. By working on the muscles, you will minimise their wastage and keep all areas ‘toned’. By working your chest muscles, you will help prevent the area from ‘dropping’. If your programme is wellbalanced, you will also be paying attention to the muscles of the upper back, which will give you better posture, and also aid in the ‘lifting’ of the chest area. The same thing applies to the areas of the lower limbs and hip areas. If you don’t use them, you lose them! Making sure that you have a well-balanced resistance training programme to help keep all areas strong and toned, will help keep those flabby areas at bay, as well as keep you strong and injury-free.

“By working on the muscles, you will minimise their wastage and keep all areas toned.”

The top five tips to stop the drop, & get rid of bingo wings 1. Nutrition — this is paramount. If you promote fat storage, then these two areas are going to suffer. 2. Perform your back/chest exercises in a ratio of 2:1. Especially work on postural muscles such as your upper back and glutes. 3. Back exercises — working on the large back muscles will help with good posture, burn a lot of calories and help tone the arms at the same time. 4. Use free weight and bodyweight exercises when working your chest muscles. Exercises such as barbell, or dumbbell chest press, press ups, or DB Flyes are a great start. (Change the angle of the bench to provide a different stimulus to the areas.) 5. Do your isolation exercises last. Exercises like bicep curls, hammer curls (front of the arm), tricep (back of the arm) pushdowns, or lateral raises (side of the shoulders) should be done last in your workout, but are still an essential element to consider.

Nowadays, sofas and chairs have become a lifestyle expression. From fabulously elegant and modern, to the flippantly humorous and unique and everything in between, you can find them anywhere. We spend much of our lives occupying them, whether we are at work, or just taking a rest. Luckily, there are clever and talented designers willing to renegotiate our relationship with sofas and chairs. Georges Karam reveals all. Co-written by Jenda Dagami, GK&Partners

T

Zara Pod Chair

hrough the ages, sofas and chairs have emerged as an important symbol of life. Some magnificent seats were considered very luxurious and were made especially for royalty. In fact, the word ‘sofa’ originates from the Arabic word ‘Suffah’ or bench. But as communities moved away from a nomadic existence where they often pack up and move at short notice, it has come to represent a settled life of permanence, safety and comfort. The sofa is usually a focal point, the seating area most often used, and, if the wrong choice is made, the source of the most complaint. A sofa that will be used for relaxation can be deep and cushy with loose pillows. A sofa with arms lower than the back is a versatile choice for both formal and informal settings. A rolled arm sofa is also a good choice. A camelback sofa has a curvilinear shape, shallow seating and a tight back. It is better for a formal and traditional setting. Chairs can have many different uses, usually depending on the room. Before chair shopping, get a feel for what you’re looking for. Are you trying to round out your living room set-up? A plush modern leather chair may do the trick. Want to fill that empty corner in the dining room? Maybe a refurbished antique wingback will complete the space. What about the kitchen? Mostly, a high chair that is slender and shapely coordinates the kitchen's centre island, or the breakfast area. Want to dress up a space lounge? An armless upholstered slipper chair with short legs that lets it sit closer to the ground makes it a comfortable choice for many. Hoping to score a comfortable office chair? A chair that’s easily movable and ergonomically correct will work the best. Each of these situations fulfills a different need, and therefore requires a different chair. What makes up a sofa or a chair is whether we define it physically or mentally — but ultimately, it will be defined by the individual. The more important people feel, the more elaborate it tends to become. It is an important investment which often sets the tone and atmosphere of your space and perhaps more importantly it can be your retreat, your nest and even your consolation, therefore pay attention to the quality of the design, the source and the manufacturing — not everything that shines is gold! Often a cheap price means poor quality; in this area the quality over quantity philosophy is very important.

Guaranteed German goodness, the Panamera delivers the best of both worlds — a fancy sports car and a luxurious sedan in one silky package. Images by George Mathew

Sari Mabire Diva Driver

Porsche Panamera V6

P

orsche — the name that makes any sports car enthusiast’s heart beat faster — first introduced the four-seater Panamera in 2009. Initially, it might have upset some purist Porsche aficionados, a number of them thinking that Porsche was selling out its sports car soul by producing the Panamera, especially the same people who already thought that with the making of the Cayenne back in 2002 (well, how wrong were they... The Cayenne has become the best selling model of all Porsches.) However, many Porsche fans were very happy to receive the four-seater sports sedan — hey, a real sports car where you can fit two friends PROPERLY at the back. So how is it to drive? Of the Panamera’s line-up of seven models Ohlala! had the pleasure of trying out the base model V6, which although not as exciting as some of the other models, still delivers everything that the iconic sports car brand name promises — ultra performance in ultra luxury. Once you enter the car you are welcomed by vast expanses of lush leather. All four well-formed seats are similar in appearance and comfort, and even long legged occupants at the rear have ample space to stretch their legs. The reason why Porsche designed two individual seats at the rear instead of the regular three seats found in most sedans is that they wanted the passengers at the back to enjoy the same level of performance oriented comfort as the driver and the front seat occupant. Indeed the seats are very snug, providing superb level of support and comfort. The elevated centre console hosts a myriad of buttons from where you can control, for example, the auto start/stop function and the driving mode (Sport or Normal), as well as the cabin temperature. The model that Ohlala! had came fitted with the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system — the central control unit for audio, navigation and communications systems, which of course are top notch as expected of a car in this category. The PCM is easily operated either by the 7-inch high-resolution touch screen, or by the conventional button controls; it’s your choice. Among others, the standard safety equipment includes antilock brakes, stability and traction controls, front and rear side airbags, side curtain airbags and front knee airbags. For those with small offspring, child seat anchors and child locks at the rear are also standard. The model we tried came with a rearview camera, which of course makes parking and pulling out of cramped car spaces so much easier. This model of Panamera is powered by a 3.6-litre Direct Fuel Injection V6 engine, delivering 300 hp, enabling acceleration from zero to 100-kilometres per hour in 6.3-seconds. The seven-speed PDK gearbox has both a manual gearshift and an automatic mode. The gear changes are smooth both in the Normal and Sport modes. When the Sport mode is engaged the drive sharpens up, the suspension stiffens and the driving becomes more fun! The Normal mode is practical for city driving with the steering feeling lighter and easier to manoeuvre. Overall, we’re told, the Panamera is more popular with ladies than men in the Gulf and we’re not surprised. It’s a perfect car for women, single, or with small family, as it’s a comfortable cruiser as well as sports car. Very nice. Very nice indeed!

Cuba

To say that Cuba is unique is an understatement. The way of life here is different from most other parts of the world. To see such an alternative perspective is not only intriguing, but educational, entertaining and thought provoking. However, to better understand how Cuba is right now, it is necessary to take a brief glimpse at its relatively recent history. Words and images by Aqeel Al-Mosawi and Hussain Al-Sairafi 86

Ohlala! I November 2012 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

S

ince Columbus landed on the island in 1492, the Spaniards rushed to the new world — including Cuba — carrying with them guns to build an empire, the Cross to civilise the locals, and later on, guitars for fun. In Cuba they soon needed manpower to run the vast sugarcane plantations. So, Africans came to the island, not voluntarily, but in chains. However, they too brought with them a few things; ancient religion and drums. When slavery and medieval racist attitudes — barriers to the integration of the two cultures fell apart, following the abolition of slavery, the two cultures met on the human level. From that point on, the Spanish guitar followed the African rhythm. The love story soon produced Cha-cha, Rumba, and Salsa whose spirit still shines brightly today. On the political front, the conflict of interest started between the Criollo (Spaniards born in the Americas) and Peninsulares (Spaniards born in Spain but living in Cuba). Tainos (the locals) and African slaves sided with those like them who were not in power. Two revolutions in 1868 and 1892 failed to get rid of the Spanish. The intervention of the new colonial power in 1898 forced the Spanish to an unconditional surrender. Following a four-year US occupation, the Republic was formed in 1902 and elections were held. In the fifties, Batista opened Cuba for US investments in hotels, casinos and cabarets. The country's economy boomed but with the elections around the corner, Castro was viewed as a national hero and was sure to win the elections. Cancelling the elections and arresting Castro later led to the third Cuban revolution by Castro himself and the famous Argentine hero, Che Ernest Guevara in 1959. It was a struggle against all odds but when Batista left the island, Castro took over and survived several assassination attempts. Castro adopted socialism and rushed to ally with the Soviet Union. When he allowed the Russian nuclear missiles on Cuba, it almost triggered WWIII. The two countries came to their senses and the crisis was resolved peacefully. What remains is the harsh US embargo that crippled the Cuban economy to this day. With this background in mind, the culture, the economy, the way of life, development, technology, music, architecture, education and global awareness — Cuba is like no other place on earth. A walk around Havana would seem like a trip to a Universal Studio stage. Most cars are classics from the fifties. The architecture in many parts seems to have been untouched for decades.

Travel “It is truly a miracle that Cuba has managed to survive the economic hardship for so long whilst its splendid culture has thrived and flourished not only in the country but has spread across the globe.”

While a visitor may feel the time warp, the locals are in complete sync with the hustle and bustle of daily life. Here the pace of life is relaxed. Wherever you look, there are people sitting outside their doorsteps, or on the sidewalks, chatting, playing, singing, dancing, reading, or just simply looking. Also, starting from late afternoon, many locals in Havana, congregate around the Malecon Avenue by the sea and fish, dance, sing, or shower in the splashing and thunderous waves. Cigars are such a daily and normal part of life as well. You’ll see men and women alike, with either a cigar in hand, or having one dangling in between their lips, with a half bitten tip by the teeth. It is evidently a well-ingrained part of the culture. Around the Malecon and other squares around the city, a diva’s voice can be heard singing — almost opera-like with her deep tones, perfect harmony and beautiful grace. The people are so friendly and very interested in visitors’ stories and point of view. Language can be a barrier, as many don’t speak English or any language other than Spanish. While conversing with the locals, pride in their homeland, revolution, culture, art, nature, and even food is very apparent with both the young and old in all parts of the country. For most Cubans, the revolution never ended. What they have is an ongoing ‘revolution’ that has become in itself their very identity. This is one of the reasons why Cuba has stood as a nation in solidarity with most of the revolutions that it has gone through in the second half of the twentieth century. A clear example are the banknotes of the Cuban Republic used since 1902, which until now, attests to the revolutionary nature of the country.

Pictures of Cuban revolutionaries from all the past wars are on display. Céspedes, Goméz and Maceo are heroes of the first war, while José Marti is their ‘Bolivar’ of the second war. The trio of the 1959 revolution: Castro, Che and Cienfuegos, dominate the small denominations and many of the walls and murals as well. In recent years, tourism has become an important source of foreign currency and tours operate in the country on a regular basis. Currently, the country has two currencies, one for locals and another for visitors. This astonishing fact may surprise many but it is necessary due to the socialist rations in place, and to ensure that more foreign currency flows into the country. The main destinations are Havana, Santa Clara, Trinidad, Pinar Del Rio, Cienfuegos, Camaguey, and Santiago de Cuba. The motto ‘Authentic Cuba’ is a bulls-eye description of all the cities visited. The monuments are so numerous, detailed, symbolic and stunning — from the apartment buildings in the streets of Havana, to the sixteenth century Trinidad, through to the amazing national tropical reserves and all along the way as you travel in between cities, are incredible aspects of this beautiful land and culture. Most national reserves offer guided horseback tours to rivers and waterfalls, which is an activity not be missed, especially if it is raining! All throughout the country, local arts and crafts on sale, as well as those you see displayed on walls, are very colourful, striking, vivid and reflect the uniqueness of Cuba. The strong African influence can be seen on murals and art studios, while the Spanish footprint is more evident in the architecture of the country. A few shows are available in the major cities and the famous Tropicana show in Havana is well known for its lavish costumes, exceptional dancers and explosive energy. The famous Havana Club Rum is by far the dominating beverage and it is mixed by locals with fresh juice from sugarcane and topped by a splash of lemon. It is truly a miracle that Cuba has managed to survive economic hardship for so long, whilst its splendid culture has thrived and flourished not only in the country but spread across the world. As the wheels of time keep turning, this gem of a place will not remain the same. So, as the tide of change move closer, it is highly recommended that the best time to visit is now.

Sophisticated Taste A meat lover’s haven, Prime at the InterContinental Doha The City, boasts only the choicest selection of cuts, promising to deliver “one of the finest steakhouse dining experiences” in town. Images by Creative Design 90

W “Prime’s refined presentation of stylishly plated cuisine is only second to the divine encounter your taste buds will have with the delectable flavours, and we declare, one of the most welcoming services in Doha we have had the pleasure to experience to date.”

alking into Prime, you’ll immediately be impressed by the air of sophisticated ambiance with atmospheric lighting and chic interiors. Dark teak wood tables with soft linen seating, as well as elegant paintings and Baroque styled chandeliers, add a touch of class to the venue. With intimate, private dining areas as well as the main dining space on offer, you can be assured to find something to suit your tastes and complement the mood of your dining party. Although Prime’s mission is to “source and serve the best quality prime cuts of meat available in the market”, the urbane menu also features a wide variety of mouthwatering cuisine for fish lovers. Vegetarians and vegans, however, would be better suited to the InterContinental Doha The City’s other excellent selection of restaurants. Entertained by the assistant restaurant manager, Sreejith Pillal, our dining experience was a lighthearted and enjoyable one. Extremely well versed and knowledgeable, with a fine sense of humour, Sreejith catered to all our needs with a friendly professionalism that is hard to come by. It is the kind of welcoming that makes you feel right at home, as if you were having dinner round an old family friend's dining table, and will make you want to visit time and time again. Browsing the menu, designed by Prime's sous chef Adnan Nadeem and head chef Nicolas de Visch, is sure to excite your taste buds as your eyes rove over the range of fresh seafood, unique salads and heartwarming soups, not forgetting the finest grill section of high quality, USDA prime beef, lamb, venison and poultry. To begin with, perhaps savour the delicate combination of flavours in Seared Scallops with Portobello Carpaccio, red radish and walnut truffle cloud, relishing every mouthful. Crab Cake, with fennel tumbleweed and fruity raspberry vinaigrette is also a delight to behold, surprisingly but pleasing light, without the oily texture that crab cakes can often be subjected to. The Beef Carpaccio of 250 days grain-fed Angus Tenderloin, Foie Gras Terrine and Sweet Butter Poached Lobster, also come highly recommended by the chef. A taste bud sensation, the Arugula and Herb Salad with blood orange and crunchy, candied cashew nuts, is an explosion of complementing flavours and consistency; a definite must-try. Cooked to perfection the selection of prime beef, — tenderloin, sirloin and ribeye cuts — from the world renowned Kobe Wagyu to Black Angus, is carefully advised on weight, temperature, choice of knives, sides and sauces by skillfully trained staff, which after appraising, we can easily testify to. Having the opportunity to sample a variety of side orders, we suggest the succulent Grilled Portobello mushrooms and crispy Tempura Shiitake, as well as the Grilled Root Vegetables and Garlic Home Fries, or Garlic and Rosemary Roasted Potatoes. Fish lovers will take pleasure in tasting the imported, Chargrilled Norwegian Salmon, which simply melts in the mouth, otherwise the French Prime Sea Bass or Giant Gulf King Prawns, are sure to more than satisfy your seafood craving. Connoisseurs of fruits of the vine will be awed by the exceptional variety, as well as the staff’s vast know-how on the subject, as they assist you in selecting the most favourable option to complement your meal. Prime’s refined presentation of stylishly plated cuisine is only second to the divine encounter your taste buds will have with the delectable flavours, and we declare, one of the most welcoming services in Doha we have had the pleasure to experience to date.

We share the recipe for Aroma’s delectable Pan Seared Hammour; a winning combination of moist fish and lightly spiced couscous with perfectly cooked vegetables and tomato coulis.

Pan Seared Hammour Ingredients (Serves four) 700g Hammour Lemon juice 300g Couscous 4g Thyme 4g Cumin powder 4g Coriander 4g Tumeric 10ml Olive oil 500ml Vegetable stock 50g Carrots & celery 100g Cubed tomato 50g Cubed onions 10g Garlic 20g Tomato paste 200g Pok choi 50g Butter Salt & pepper

Method First clean the fish, cut a tranche of 175 grams each and marinate with salt, pepper and lemon juice. Then heat a pan and fry the hammour. When it’s finished cooking, add salt, pepper and lemon juice to taste. Meanwhile, place the couscous in a bowl with the spice, salt and pepper, then boil the vegetable stock. When the stock is ready, poor it into the bowl with the couscous mixture. Saute the carrots and celery and add them to the couscous. For the tomato coulis, remove the skin from the tomatoes and cut into cubes, sauté the onions without colouring, then add the garlic and tomato paste, followed by the tomatoes. Reduce the heat for ten to 15 minutes, blend and pass through a strainer to have a smooth puree. For the pok choi, boil it until tender, then sauté with butter, salt, pepper and lemon juice. Build up the plate in layers. Ohlala! Stars Giovanni unveils your future for November… Happy Birthday Ms Scorpio! You could be feeling out of the loop when it comes to family this month, believing that you’re being kept away from the hub of what is going on. Before you throw a tantrum, there could be nothing less sinister to their behaviour other than them trying to organise some kind of a surprise party! On the health front, an injury to your lower body could open up a few problems if not dealt with quickly.

October 23 – November 21

Scorpio — at a glance

Think Scorpio and you immediately think about extremes. Deep, intense people, they love a secret and there is always more about them than you first realise. With a cool and detached exterior, underneath they possess a deep inner strength and an intense passion that can often surprise people who are not familiar with them. Possessors of keen intellect, Scorpios often like to ask questions and delve deeper into a problem or situation and this makes them very good journalists or lawyers. If there is a story to be found or justice to be sought then Scorpio is the sign most likely to achieve it! On a negative side they can be too ambitious and controlling of others and they certainly have a jealous side which can make relationships a bit of a bumpy ride.

Capricorn (December 22 – January 19) If you have ever considered moving abroad then this could be the time for you to give that decision serious thought after a colleague offers you the chance to change careers and consequently your living environment. Whilst the reality might seem scary, this could be just the experience you’re looking for. On the relationship front it has been a pretty quiet time for you but this might change around October 23 after a rather wild party introduces you to a feisty, freeloving personality. Prepare for fireworks! Pisces (February 19 – March 19) Although there is still some time to go until the holidays in December and New Year, this hasn’t stopped many of you contemplating the festive season. Generally you are quite excitable anyway when it comes to family and big gettogethers and this year is going to prove most rewarding in that respect. It might also be the last one under a certain theme so it is worth making the most of it. With that in mind, your thoughts are going to be directed completely on planning. Make sure you give everyone a voice in the process.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20) Your biggest focus this month and the driving factor behind your actions in 2012 has to be a career choice and the outcomes of a recent contract agreement that will begin to open significant doors for you in the next 18 months. In the future you will look back to this month and you view it as a defining moment in your life. You have a lot to look forward to in your life so resist the temptation to feel sorry for yourself and get those creative juices flowing! Cancer (June 21 – July 22) You don’t warm well to gossip and conjecture and you’re certainly not happy to hear that you’ve been made the scapegoat of someone’s ill-placed words and forced to defend your good name this month. This might be harder than you imagine and you’ll find it difficult to pinpoint the individual who’s ultimately to blame. On the financial front, things could be tight for you in the run-up to December so it’s wise to watch the pennies if you want to have a worry-free time over the festive season. Virgo (August 23 — September 22) November is going to be all about new discoveries and new friendships, something you’ve been enjoying over the last few months. You’ll find yourself far from home and the people who love you most but you can be reassured that in the background people are watching out for you in more ways than you realise. 118

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21) Absent friends or relationships that have been left to lapse are going to feature on your mind this month and you would do well to make the effort and rekindle these associations. Your life has been moving along at quite a pace recently and as things slow down this month, you may find yourself recollecting your past and the fond memories could have a profound impact upon you. Life can be brief so never forget the building blocks that have helped shape who you are as a person.

Aquarius (January 20 – February 18) Your world of late has been dominated by work and your career has certainly taken off thanks to promotion and greater responsibility. Whilst this is positive for your future and your finances, remember not to neglect family and loved ones. After all they are the ones who drive a lot of what you’re doing. Take a step back towards the end of the month and spend time with those closest to you and put a little back into your personal life. Aries (March 20 – April 19) If there’s one word that sums up your overall experience of 2012 it would have to be ‘unpredictable’ as nothing over the last ten months has gone quite as you imagined it to. This has altered your perception of life a little and perhaps made you more cautious than you would ordinarily have been. Fortunately, you will enjoy an upturn in your situation for the latter part of the year, which is a good platform to take you into 2013.

GEMINI (May 21 – June 20) Often regarded as one of the more quick-witted, fast learners of the Zodiac, this month you might find yourself under a little pressure to deliver, mainly because your focus has been deflected elsewhere. A blossoming relationship has certainly occupied much of your time lately and whilst this is not a bad thing, you need to think about how you can marry this with your busy career, so take a step back and formulate a plan.

LEO (July 23 – August 22) After the excesses of last month you’ll be glad to discover that life is a little more fluid and a little less hectic throughout this month, which is just as well because you were heading down a precarious road last month. The kind words of a colleague or partner have instilled some wisdom into your thinking and fortunately you’ve been able to correct the situation. If you don’t want to end up in the same predicament, be a little more proactive and realistic.

Libra September 23 – October 22 You have proven yourself to be quite indecisive of late and since you are never one to commit to anything without careful thought this will come as a surprise to some people, including you! The problem could stem back to your lack of confidence and it might be wise to speak with someone about what’s on your mind. Bottling things up is not going to get you anywhere. On the financial front, an expensive purchase needs to be carefully considered, otherwise you might be out of pocket just when you need money the most.

“It's solidly safe to say that a real turning point took place in Abu Dhabi this year.” Local

I

'm sure you've all seen the news lately. Richard Gere, Nate Parker, Nicholas Jarecki and Mohammed Al Turki all over the headlines as this year's Abu Dhabi Film Festival stars. We all visited my favourite Emirate to premiere ‘Arbitrage’, which stars the screen legend that is Richard Gere. It also stars a whole bunch of incredible talent including Susan Sarandon, Nate Parker and Brit Marling. Directed by Nicholas Jarecki and executively produced by Mohammed Al Turki, the film takes you on a serious trip of moral ethics, surging into your sense of value and inadvertently scrutinising the number of "greys" in life — with an astute timeliness, and yet, timelessness? Does that make sense? Anyway … It's solidly safe to say that a real turning point took place in Abu Dhabi this year. A cultural elevation in the art of filmmaking, where one no longer admires the other from afar, nor questions the possibilities and vast opportunities. Job, sincerely, and memorably, well done. Then, came New York City. Where I am right now. En route to Mercer's Kitchen actually, for a spot of lunch. Followed by some Soho strolls. Georgetown cupcakes. Things like that (more of a "me" day today). Kicking off the large fruit activity was Denise Rich's annual Angel Ball. A definitive highlight on the social calendar, this year's gala for Gabrielle's Angel foundation generously (and fabulously) raised USD3.7 million towards cancer research. Saudi's Prince Fahd Al Saud (or "Princetagram", as the media called him) impressed on many levels. First, his advocacy work on cancer awareness shone graciously on the Angel Ball red carpet. So too did his garments and unbelievable shoes. One even spotted Monsieur Kanye West having the enviable gander. Russell Simmons spent a good while chatting

to Saudi's ‘Prince of Elevation’ about his efforts in Palestine; we discussed works in dialogue, Muslim/Jewish relations, and a brand new film called ‘The Other Son’ which precisely tackles the religious and cultural differences of the Middle East's longest conflict — ever. There's lots ahead ... next month for more. Other Angel Ball attire wows included those on the bodies of Solange Knowles (that Badgley Mischka, was ALL), Gerard Butler (who cares what he wore), Ashanti's black dress bomb.com and Crystal Renn — colour blocking ... so correctly. ere, ard G Mohammed Al Turki was fresh off h Rich t i w s ment ck Jarecki his Abu Dhabi success and inside the i pet mo ed car Turki & N R : e Cipriani Ballroom looking his usual m l i t A i b d e a h m Abu D Moham dapper. Russell Simmons pulled off the cap/full suit look as only he can and Estelle's cocktail Cavalli number = amaze. I donned another Orkalia piece of local charm, and matched its lacy, earthy demure with a touch of vintage, a glint of bedazzle and a lot of Chanel. After all, we are welcoming fall. Natalie Cole, Smokey Robinson and Nelly all gave smashing performances on what was a truly soulful and beautiful evening. Real family energy. Warm, celebratory, positive, R&R intimate and forward. : Roza n Ahm Congratulations to the always ed Film & Richard inspiring, ever loving, darling Festiv al 201Gere at Ab Denise...Thank you for highlighting the u Dha 2 bi power in music, the greatness in togetherness and the celebration, in life! 
