Is it the end of the world? ecember 21, 2012, is regarded as the end-date of the Mesoamerican Long Count Calendar from Maya history. There are a varying range of beliefs on the topic of the 2012 phenomenon, some considering that it is marked as the end of the world, or a similar catastrophe, which scholars from various disciplines have dismissed. But can they dismiss the possibility of a Third World War, and the Earth being destroyed by human hands? Another interpretation of the date is that it marks the time in which Earth and its inhabitants may undergo a positive physical or spiritual transformation, the beginning of a new era. Whether you believe the speculation surrounding the event, or not, it does offer good food for thought. The Ohlala! team adore the idea of a positive transformation; we are all, the world over, in much need of this right now. Everyone can do their own part in making the world a better place by being compassionate towards others, taking care of their environment, and simply smiling. Go on, you know you want to. eet team Salzakih: young and passionate Saleh Abdulrahman, his elegant and driven mother Zakia Al Mudakhka, his sister Haneen, and even his artistically gifted seven-year-old niece Nouf, are part of the master plan. “My label Salzakih,” explains the 26-year-old designer, “actually comes from our names, Sal – for Saleh, Zaki – for my mother Zakia, and the H for my

sister Haneen. “I wanted to have a shared ground between me and my family. My mum is an artist and a teacher. And I studied economics at University, but as I got older I said we should do something different. I know we have a talent as a family and by working together in fashion design, it will bring us closer.” Saleh remembers his childhood and being surrounded by his mother’s tastes for the latest trends. “I used to sit with my mother in her room looking at her magazines, like Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue. They were hard to come by in the Middle East in those days. I didn’t know what it meant at the time, I thought I was just looking at pictures of beautiful people,” recalls Saleh, whose collection of blazers went on display for the first time last month at The Gate’s catwalk show, Dress to Impress, for young and up and coming Qatari designers. Even though studying economics seems a far cry from the world of haute couture, being based in England and visiting London left its mark on the young designer. “I like the way people dress in London, the popular culture is a big influence I think, as are the colours, lots of greys and blacks. I think any of the blazers I have made you could quite easily see on the streets of London,” says Saleh.

Saleh launched the business online earlier this year, and produced just three of each of his Blazer designs. “There is a small, medium and a large, which can be worn by men or women, that’s the appeal.” Saleh’s mother, meanwhile, is hoping to join her son in the next year or so, with a new collection of party dresses. The former teacher, Zakia Al Mudakhka tells us, “Actually this isn’t the first time. Even when I was a teacher, I used to design clothes in my holidays, and I opened a Boutique selling wedding and party dresses in 1993. At the time I didn’t have the know-how to run a business but this time I want to do it right. “Now that I have finished my degree (Masters in Education from Qatar University), I am thinking of starting my own business, especially party dresses. Women want to know about which style and colour suits them, so I want to design dresses that will suit different people, suit their shape, their skin tone, their personality.” Saleh adds, “And there is also my sister, who I would like to be involved, and my niece who already loves drawing. I think it would be great to use her ideas as the basis for a collection of clothes for children.” Saleh’s ambitions don’t stop there, he says, “I want to register and copyright my brand in the UK and I want my business to be based there. I want to concentrate on starting small until I can stand on my own two feet. But my ultimate goal is to become an international fashion designer. “My style is always something that is a bit unique but not too loud. With the blazers I used leather because I think it speaks of quality, but also appeals to the younger generation, who are my target customers. Eyes Wide Open

Fostering a love of books is widely recognised as one of the most important things you can do for children to open their eyes to a whole new world and prepare them for life, which is exactly why projects like Maktaba, run by three professional Doha mothers, is so important, as Josie Hill discovers.

espite Qatar having some of the highest literacy rates in the Arab world, libraries are few and far between, and books are still sometimes seen as belonging to the classroom and not everyday life. Maktaba, with its mission to â&#x20AC;&#x153;provide a place to inspire children and their parents to fall in love with readingâ&#x20AC;?, hopes to change this perception of books, and ultimately, to launch its own Arabic and English library for children in Doha. American born, Sarah Champa Al Dafa, explains the inspiration that drove her and her fellow founders to launch the project last year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The drive to do something like this started when I realised the scarcity of books. The community aspect of libraries back home was very important to me for adults and children alike. So the idea for Maktaba was born about two years ago when I was lucky enough to find like-minded partners, Mohana Akshmi Raja Kumar and Hind Ambdulrahman Al Khilaifi.

THE CAUSE “They are friends and are from different parts of the world,” Sarah adds. “I am American and married a Qatari, Mohana is American and South Asian, and Hind is Qatari. I feel that the three of us together represent a good cross section of Qatari society. This is important because I want it to be a project that appeals to all. “To some degree projects here are often perceived as being aimed at expats, or Qataris. There is also sometimes a lack of understanding between the different groups, something that I want Maktaba to address. That is what a library is, it’s a community centre, for everyone.” The project itself started in Spring 2012 at Mathaf Modern with bi-monthly thematic reading groups. The reading sessions, aimed at four to seven-year-olds, last an hour and a half, with readings by volunteers in Arabic and English and a craft related to the story. Mother and new volunteer storyteller, Noora Al Kuwari got involved because she wanted to spread her love of reading to others. “Libraries in Qatar are not part of our traditional culture. I was lucky to have parents that encouraged me to read and I want to pass on those skills. When children see you reading it encourages them to read,” Noora tells us, highlighting that “Maktaba reading sessions are also a great opportunity for my children to meet kids from other cultures and backgrounds and also for me to read to other children.” Maktaba’s long term goal is to open a full service lending library specifically designed to meet the needs of children and teens. Sarah expands on the founders' ambitions, “We want this to be a place that encourages reading through the development of a thoughtful and extensive collection of Arabic and English language books, reference materials and new media. “We also hope to support readers, learners and the community through programming that includes storytime, cultural programs and academic support and more. The magic of a library is as much about the programs it provides and the sense of community it engenders as it is about the books.” As a community-based organisation, Maktaba relies on people’s goodwill to help it become the community focal point and haven for book lovers and story tellers, which its founders Sarah, Hind and Mohana, so want it to become.

Homegrown Talent Starts to Shine Jan Xavier Pacle has come a long way in a short time, with films showing at Cannes, Seattle and appearing at Doha’s own film festival DTFF for the second time. This Filipino born director, who grew up in Qatar, is already standing out from the crowd. Images by Chai Bautista @ Creative Design anix, as he likes to be known, has to think for a minute when I ask him his age... It is an unusually long pause for such a young person, “I’m 24, I think, yes, I’m 24!” It is the answer of someone who has been hard at it for several years, and is not planning on taking a break anytime soon. “I already have plans for the movie we are looking to make next year. My producer Sky Gonzalez and I have a team in place, we even have the contracts ready,” says Janix, still riding high from the success of his second only feature film, ‘Angel in June,’ which was a DTFF festival favourite last month. Janix’s fascination with film goes back to his upbringing. His father was a graphic designer and still is, now running the Philippines' arm of Janix’s company Renderfarm Graphics. Following his father’s footsteps into the media world, Janix returned to the Philippines in 2004 to study mass communications, and on graduating got a job at one of the largest broadcasting networks in the country, ABS CBN. But as with so many overseas foreign workers, the salaries back home could not compete with the salaries in places like Qatar: “In the Philippines, what I was earning was only enough for me, but not to support my family,” he says. “So I got a job as a video editor at Jumpzone Productions then later I was promoted to video production manager. Two years ago I came to an agreement with my ex-boss, who is now my partner, and we started our own company, Renderfarm Graphics.” While the company’s core business is making TV advertisements and corporate films, Janix’s passion lies in his desire to make a name for himself in cinema here in Doha, and back home in the Philippines.

“My ultimate goal is to have an impact on Filipino cinema. It was the golden age in the 1970s and 80s but now the big studios produce very formulaic movies. There are many love stories in the mainstream. In the independent film circuit there are a lot of promising films but the public will not watch them because they want something happy and uplifting. “What I hope to achieve is to bridge the gap between the independent and the mainstream, by creating stories that say something new, but that people will also love watching,” Janix looks back fondly on his first feature, which he describes as a surreal no-budget feature film. “It’s called ‘Sunrise after Sunset’ and is about an overseas foreign worker who has issues with his family back home. Actually, we did have a budget but it was just QR5000 for sets, food, props, everything. But we managed to get it together and story-wise it’s ok.” Janix’s second film, a six-minute creation called ‘Finding Faith,’ was selected for the short film corner in Cannes Film Festival and in the National Film Festival for Talented Youth in Seattle in 2011. “'Finding Faith' is about morality,” says Janix. “The story is about this guy who was waiting for a heart transplant for a long time, then suddenly he gets a call from the hospital that he might have a donor and that’s when his dilemma begins; whether he prays for the heart, which means his donor is going to die, or prays for the other guy to get well… that’s the gist.” Janix's next film, a short called ‘I love You Mum’, aired in DTFF’s

Made in Qatar section last year. Despite the fact that the screen play was written in just two days, it was one of the nominated films for the best movie in that section. After last year’s festival Janix was able to return to making the film, which showed in this year’s DTFF, ‘Angel in June,’ the touching story of a young girl who has leukaemia but tries to hide it from her friends and family until it is too late. Janix gives a brief synopsis: “Angel is a Filipino girl living in Doha. She is very charitable, likes to help, and is very generous and kind, always thinks about others without thinking of herself, so when she becomes sick, she hides it from her parents to the point when she goes home with her nose bleeding, and shortly after that she dies. It is about hope and courage but also her parents’ struggle to deal with the situation.” With the DTFF now finished for another year, Janix and producer Sky, are now setting the wheels in motion for their next project, ‘Remembering Ada,’ which they are hoping to find funding for, early next year. For budding film directors and producers out there, Janix advises not to let having a limited budget get in the way: “Just get a camera and shoot, that’s how I started. The equipment is very accessible these days, whereas before you needed a really good camera to get the shots but now you can just get a DSLR from anywhere and start shooting. So make a story, start shooting it and submit it to festivals.”

Often viewed as a sexist or derogatory comment, it’s quite the opposite in the professional world of cuisine, as Josie Hill finds out when she meets rising star of fine dining, Monica Tungjungsari. Brought up surrounded by the smells and tastes of delicious Balinese cooking, Monica saw only one path for herself, that of the kitchen. 46

ith a passion for food, a radiant smile and above all, self-determination to succeed in the male dominated world of the kitchen, Oryx Rotana’s executive sous-chef Monica Tungjungsari, is clearly making a name for herself. “What I want to prove to myself is that I can do even better than a man in this job. The famous chefs are always male, but if they can do it, why can’t I?” says the 29-year-old, taking a break from the kitchen to speak to Ohlala! Qatar. “At home it’s the mother that cooks, so I don’t see why it should be any different in the professional world,” Monica tells us defiantly.

Working in a male dominated world “Actually, we have a lot of women in the kitchen in Rotana, but most of them are men. I treat them with respect, so I get the respect back. When I first started they were looking at me thinking, ‘What can she do, she’s just a woman?’. After that I showed them that if they can carry a big pot, I can do the same. I don’t want special treatment because I’m a lady. That’s why, they opened their minds and thought, ‘Ok, she is like one of us’.” Monica also had the blessing and benefit of a strong female role model in that of her mother, who was always at the stove of the family catering business. She elaborates, “I always saw my mother busy preparing food and I knew this was for me. I told my parents that I wanted to study to be a chef, and then went on to complete my diploma in food production management at the Hotel and Tourism Institute in Bali.” On graduating, Monica worked for a year in a restaurant in Bali before getting a job at the Hilton, and then the Holiday Inn, both in the Maldives. “I enjoyed it but also knew it wasn’t for me in the long term. It is not healthy living a resort life in a remote place,” she tells us, “so I decided to move to Abu Dhabi, and got a job at the Anandara Resort. But I did not realise it’s almost the same because the location is in the desert far from the city. After a few months I decided I needed to go, and I started applying for jobs. I saw a post for a vacant position at this hotel, chef Rainer replied asking if I was interested in joining the hotel as chef de partie, but he then offered me a better position as sous chef. For me, if I move, it is either for position or salary. And now I’ve been here for two and a half years.” Monica explains the role: “A sous chef is in charge of an outlet, so I was the one who opened the Cellar and the Jazz Club, and now I am in charge of Choices, but recently Chef Rainer promoted me to be the executive sous chef, second to Chef Rainer.”

The best thing of all Aside from getting to taste delicious food, the best thing about it all, she admits, is that she doesn’t consider it a job. “It's more like I have a hobby making food for others,” Monica tells us, “being a chef I am doing what I love but also with the financial benefits of working in a professional kitchen at this level. “The other benefit of being a chef is that even if you cannot find a job, you can always use your skill to do something, like start a business. There is always a need for cooking and food.

“Working with the Rotana is something that I am really proud of. I’ve worked with several large chains of hotels but I feel that Rotana has a big heart in the way they deal with their team members. Working here also means I have a great opportunity to grow in my career. Several new properties will be launched in the next two to three years, which will open doors for me and for my colleagues to take on new challenges and develop ourselves.” Down time Monica likes to spend her day off with her husband, often going out and enjoying a meal “with the competition”. “Usually my husband will say ‘don’t start to complain, just eat it’. But I do always appreciate the food, whatever is on offer.”

hey barely need an introduction. The women of Britain have been lovingly serenaded by this classical-crossover four-piece over the span of six years and three albums. Most of you will be conjuring a similar image — four dashing young men, brown-suited and be-pocketsquared, dropped into a rather blustery beach scene and belting out ‘Yo Te Voy A Amar.’ Prepare to have your dreamy, soft focus scene disrupted. The boys are back with a fourth album, Start Over, but this time there’s a twist. Forget ‘Nessun Dorma’, ‘Nella Fantasia’ or any other crooning of the semi-operatic variety. The Blake boys are treading a new path. One that is modern, catchy and, importantly, of their own choosing. For a start, “We’re never going to wear brown suits again,” says Stephen, “that was somebody else’s idea.” “We were with a major label,” Jules pitches in, “who steered us down a very specific route. We felt we had to live up to the expectations and desires of the product that they were trying to launch. We had to be very ‘on message’.”

“What we are trying to show now, is actually what’s always been there,” adds Humphrey, “that we are young guys, who do have a classical influence, but who have a contemporary taste in music.” So, this latest album is a departure from several things — from their classical vocal quality, from the styling that went with it, and from the label that gave them their big break. “We’ve gone independent,” says Jules, “and it has given us the ability to express ourselves in a way that we are much more comfortable with.” If they’re leaving behind the classics and stepping onto Gary Barlow’s territory, it remains to be seen how they will significantly distinguish themselves from the other big man-bands. “It’s our vocals and harmony that will set us apart,” asserts Humphrey. “We are using four-part harmony,” continues Jules, “in a contemporary setting, with original pop material and actually, that hasn’t been done so much since groups like The Bee Gees and The Beach Boys.” “What we are trying to do,” says Stephen, “is reinterpret what harmony singing is and how it can be used. A lot of the songs wouldn’t sound out of place on a Take That album, but I don’t think even Take

Celebrity Scoop That would apply as much vocal harmony as us. That is our unique sound; it’s what we do.” Blake are keen that no member is to become the so-called ‘lead singer’. “That works when you’ve got one really great voice and three not so good ones,” says Humphrey, “or when you have one particularly good-looking person. But we have four equally strong voices and four individually strong characters and I guess we’re all about as good-looking as each other.” It’s all very democratic, you see. The first three albums have seen them attract an astonishing number of female fans. They’ve not quite been of the Beatles-mania variety, but the hysteria levels have been remarkably high nonetheless. You’d think they might be worried that a change in direction would lose them some of the original support. “We have differently aged fans all over the world,” says Stephen, “from 18 through to 80, but a large proportion of them, especially in Britain, are women in their 40s and over.” “A lot of people who bought the first album,” continues Jules, “were about 15 years old in the 1960s, which means they have a wide range of musical tastes. The people who came to hear us sing ‘Nessun Dorma’ were also Beatles fans and fans of music that we are not a million miles away from on this album.” What may surely worry some women, however, is a possible change in tone and theme. These boys have become known as ‘romance’ personified. They are the embodiment of passionate vibrato, intense stares and lyrics about love, lust and how best to cherish a woman. Have no fear, because on this latest album, if you can believe it, the songs have become even more imbued with romantic sentiment. “We Brits can sometimes be a bit cold and calculated when it comes to love and romance,” insists Stephen, “Love is what we all want in our lives. I have a wonderful girlfriend who is incredibly romantic with me and it is what keeps me interested. We may not all experience love all of the time, but these songs inspire us to imagine

the thing that we want the most.” “We’ve all been through highs and lows,” continues Jules, “even within the time that we’ve been in the group, but we are all optimists. Some of the songs might touch on heartbreak, but they are largely about being positive and looking forward.” “We are all romantics at heart,” says Humphrey, “Just look at the most successful songs of all time. They are nearly always about love, passion and romance.” With this in mind, it seemed only fitting to ask the boys for their views on just what it takes to master the art of romance in everyday life. “I’m very proud of one particular date,” says Humphrey, “I took her for dinner and then we hopped in my old smashed up Land Rover and headed up to the coast. I filled the whole car with candles and we sat with a blanket over us, eating chocolates and drinking champagne in front of the sea.” “If I could arrange anything, I think my plan would be to get a cable car to the top of Table Mountain in South Africa and have a private dinner at the top. It has a beautiful view,” Jules explains, “That, or I’d take a girl on safari and have dinner under the stars with the roar of a distant lion.” “I actually got married in my early 20s,” reveals Stephen, “When I proposed, it was in the Austrian mountains and I pulled out a ring at the top. I intend to better that some day.” “Actually, you know what,” thinks Stephen suddenly, “I want to go on a date on Virgin Galactic, in space. If this album does really well I’m going to get a ticket to go up there!” So there you have it. They might have had a change of direction, but they sure haven’t had a change of heart. What was your childhood dream? Walla. Since I was very young, my dream has always been to be a fashion designer. I would often draw sketches of women wearing different outfits, or play with Barbies and create outfits for them, and also enjoyed playing dress up. Why fashion design? W. Fashion is what drives me. I can't see myself doing anything else. I think it's a great way to express your personality through what you are wearing.

How did you get from deciding that you wanted to be a fashion designer to actually producing your first collection? W. After graduating from University and having a great fashion show, I knew I could give more, so I completed my first collection and 63

FASHION presented it in Dubai Fashion Week back in 2003. I just started growing slowly from there.

From where do you draw your inspiration? W. My inspirations come from everything around me; sometimes it will be a piece of jewellery, a colourful bird, or a pretty garden while enjoying afternoon tea. What materials do you work with? W. I work with all kinds of materials, but I’ve got to say that lace is one of my favourites; I usually incorporate lace in all my collections. My materials are sourced in Italy or France. I like using only the best. I also really enjoy working with exotic leathers for the couture pieces.

Where is the collection made? W. I do the sample pieces here in my studio in Bahrain as well as bespoke pieces. When I have a large quantity from buyers, we send the technical drawings to our production team in Italy. They usually cut the material then send it here for us to do the embroidery and beading. Then we send it back to complete the production.

How do you design your creations? W. It always starts with ideas in my head from inspirations I see. Then we create a sketch. From that I start playing with material on the mannequin. When I start to design a piece I will always make adjustments and changes, which is usually a pain for the technical drawers and production team, because they can never get a result until the last day before a shoot or a fashion show. Usually a piece will change completely from the first idea. What trends can be seen throughout your Autumn Winter Collection? W. Combining and paneling different materials: Laser-cut, sheer, velvet and metallic leather. Is there one piece that encapsulates who you are as a designer? W. The long black laser-cut leather dress with gold lace is one that translates my brand. It is extravagant yet very chic and elegant.

What is your personal style? W. I am all about glamour, being unique and having my own style to be the centre of attention.

What kind of women buys WALLA creations? W. The WALLA woman is glamorous, elegant, and has a unique style, allowing her to transform from work to play with ease. She stands out from the crowd with her sophisticated and chic sense of style, which she likes to exhibit. Her keen eye for detailed, luxurious and welltailored dresses makes her the centre of attention. She is confident and independent with a strong personality that appreciates fashion and expects nothing but the best. Do you design bespoke pieces? W. Yes, I started out the brand by only creating bespoke pieces. As time passed and I felt I had more to give, so I decided to create the ready-to-wear / couture line.

Which celebrity would you most like to design for and why? W. I would really love to dress Sarah Jessica Parker; she is a fashion icon who loves to take risks, and she turns everything she wears into a trend. What do you keep close to your heart? W. My wonderful family.

Is there anything that you would like to add? W. I would like to thank my family, friends, and everyone that supported me to reach where I am today. I still have so much more to give and will have to work much harder to reach where I want to be. It can be extremely difficult to be a successful fashion brand, but with determination, motivation, and support nothing is impossible.

e all need a bit of pampering once in a while, and if you happen to be one of the thousands working and living amongst the hustle and bustle of Doha’s glittering skyscrapers, then there is a hidden haven, called Guerlain Alfardan Spa, just for you. Guerlain originated as a French Perfume House back in 1828 and has grown to become a household name, synonymous with exquisite perfumes, high quality beauty products and treatments. With Guerlain Spas now popping up all around the world, I decided to stop off at the one in Doha to see what all the fuss was about. Stepping out of the elevator on the 39th floor of Alfardan Residential Tower into the calm and cool reception of the Spa, I was at first warmly greeted by the reception staff who explained I was to have a “two-hour facial” with Julietta. Something I’ve never done before, I at first wondered how you could possibly spend two hours on a facial. But always open to new experiences, and in dire need of something to make me look younger and fresher, I was hoping that this might do it. Julietta greeted me with a big smile and escorted me to my own private spa treatment room, complete with bathroom and changing room, where I was given a robe and slippers. Next came a brief rundown of the treatment Julietta was going to give me. “First we will do a foot treatment, then exfoliate, massage and remoisturise,” said Julietta, “and then we'll do the facial: cleanse, exfoliate, some waxing, steam to open your pores, blackhead removal, facial mask, arm, feet and leg massage, scalp massage, then cleanse, tone and moisturise.” Starting with my feet, in a tub of warm water, Julietta washed then exfoliated my skin. A nice way to start I thought, getting rid of the dust and dirt from walking outside. Next was the facial, where I lay on a specially adapted bed, covered in a fresh crisp duvet, with my hair wrapped in a towel and my face ready to be 'treated' by Julietta. Always attentive to my needs, she brought me a drink, checked the room temperature was ok, asked if the music was at the right volume, and then, got to work on my face. Using cool eye pads to revitalise my eyes, the experience was lovely, and cleansing and scrubbing my face neck and shoulders made me realise how long it had been since I had any kind of beauty treatment. As for waxing, I chose not to go for the upper lip wax, as it’s not really my thing, but I let Julietta set to work on my unruly eyebrows by waxing, pruning and plucking to make them look a little tamer. Having expected pain, it didn’t actually hurt that much, and this has to be said, is down to Julietta’s experience and skill. The same cannot be said of blackhead removal, which Julietta performed methodically all over my face. There was a point at which I thought, perhaps this particular treatment is not for me, but it was over in minutes, and I duly recovered with a deliciously cool facial mask. While that was performing its magic, I was treated to soothing massages on the arms, hands, legs and feet, finishing with the scalp — absolute bliss.

Julietta tailored the facial to suit my needs, based on a questionnaire I had filled out according to what I wanted to achieve — less wrinkles, better skin tone etc. Amazingly, the two hours passed in a flash and, if there had been a four-hour full body option I might have gone for that too. Guerlain Alfardan Spa Factfile  The treatment Josie had was the two-hour intensive facial, a personalised anti-ageing treatment according to the client’s needs, costing QR1100.  The treatment includes exfoliation and extraction, eyebrow and upper lip waxing, a 25-minute Guerlain traditional facial massage, specific mask according to the client's needs, eye patches to lessen the puffiness and lift your eye lids, with a hand, arm, scalp and half leg massage plus hand paraffin wrap.  With any treatment booked, clients may come earlier to enjoy the indoor pool, jacuzzi, steam and cold plunge facilities.  As well as several different facial options, other treatments include massage therapies, hand and foot therapies, body therapies, body refreshers and men's therapies.  There are also separate male and female salons that provide a complete range of hair care and makeup services.  The spa runs customised fitness sessions and offers ladies' hours, where children are looked after in the Alfardan Towers Kids’ Club.  To find out more, call +974 44208660, or email spa@ alfardan.com.qa

practitioner of Reiki for ten years now, meeting her in person, Melanie’s accepting and calming presence creates the space for self-reflection and healing. So what is Reiki? Reiki is a healing art that originated in Japan developed by Dr Mikao Usui. Reiki works to promote self-healing on all levels — physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual. Melanie’s first encounter with Reiki was due to her need to alleviate the pain she was feeling due to the results of a car accident. “It was what was available at the time and it felt right then. It greatly benefitted me and it has been my way of life since,” she recalls. Melanie first received training in Jikiden Reiki in Bahrain and later went on to train in Japan to further her practice. She has since been bestowed with the title of Shihan, or Master, (a process that took three years) and was given the Jikiden Reiki Institute’s 169th scroll — signifying her official certification. Reiki Masters around the world are given this scroll once they have achieved the level of becoming a Shihan. Melanie shares a metaphor of ‘The Muddy Stream’ often used by one of Reiki’s earliest Shihans, Hayashi Sensei, to best explain how Reiki works: “When you look at the surface of the water it looks clean and clear. However, when you stir it, the mud from the bottom is brought to the surface making the water cloudy and muddy. If you remove the mud floating on the surface, the stream will appear to be clear although some mud will have sunk back down to the bottom. Repeat this process enough times and the muddy stream will eventually be reborn as a clear one. By the same process Reiki stirs and removes toxins from our system. After receiving a Reiki treatment, initially a person’s condition may appear to become worse because the toxins have come to the surface but this should not be seen as a problem. It is merely a part of the natural cleansing process.” Melanie professes that Reiki works wonderfully and speaks of her experiences, “It is a very subtle energy. I started seeing colours so much more vividly. Everything seemed to be greatly enhanced. I love it and I look forward to sharing the experience with others. For me it is the most rewarding thing I have ever done in my life.” What happens in a Reiki session? Melanie explains that each person reacts differently to a Reiki treatment. Some people feel wonderful waves of energy, some feel warm and tingly, some feel nothing at all, or just notice they are relaxed, and others fall asleep. Reiki works by channelling energy to the body to enable it to eliminate toxins. Melanie works by placing her hands on the recipient’s body, and from the sensations she feels on her hands, she is able to gauge how toxic they are. Reiki is a gentle healing therapy which complements medical and other holistic therapies. Apart from providing therapy sessions, Melanie is currently focused on teaching Jikiden Reiki, which involves two levels — Reiki One or Shoden and Reiki Two or Okuden. Jikiden Reiki, Melanie says, hasn’t been ‘diluted’ with other forms of practice and has stayed true since it was rediscovered over 100 years ago. Reiki is now becoming popular within the medical system, and Melanie agrees that this is a great step forward, saying, “I personally believe in this,” adding that it is especially beneficial to anyone who cannot use other methods to help themselves. One of her patients, a lady who suffered tremendous pain from severe whiplash due to a car accident is one of her examples. “I worked on her for two months, once or twice a week. She understood that it wasn’t going to totally eradicate her problem, but Reiki has given her immense relief.” And personally, Melanie attests to the fact that it has really enhanced her life; she tells us beaming, “Your whole outlook on life changes because your compassion is heightened.” So what goals is she setting her eyes on? “Teaching is more my focus, so what I would really love is for everybody to learn Reiki. If a family for example learns Reiki, then parents can apply Reiki and teach it to their children. The festive season is associated with parties, gatherings, happiness and joy to all; with that often means a lot of high calorie food and beverage choices on offer. This month we’re going to give you some prevention strategies to help you avoid excessive weight gain during the holiday period. Four Top Tips to Avoid the Holiday Bulge

Shorten Your Workouts A great way to maintain exercise adherence is to shorten your workouts to 30 minutes. A 30-minute workout is a lot more attractive to someone who is tired through work, or excessive socialising than a 60 plus minute workout. Make sure that your exercise program consists of effective activities such as interval training, circuits, resistance exercises using super-sets, and most importantly, stretching. Performing a variety of useful exercises will give you the chance to stay on track while all of the external influences around you appear to be working against you! Partner Up It’s no secret that training with a friend or exercise partner can help keep training fun, and relieve tension from the day’s stresses, while providing an opportunity to socialise. It’s very easy to get over not going yourself, if you really don’t want to train after a day’s work; letting down your training partner is a different story. Most of us would have been on both sides of that coin at one time or another in our lives, but having that pressure to stick to your word will help keep you focused and on track.

Self-Control It is really important that you maintain a level of self-control over the festive period. Using a friend or partner to help avoid a lot of potentially dangerous situations is also useful when socialising. You can help encourage each other to stay on track and provide strength in moments of weakness. When you do decide to fall off the wagon, you can also share in the joy of whatever it is you are eating or drinking, but be careful not to use this as a regular excuse. Driving to social events is highly advised. This means that you cannot consume alcoholic bervages, which are useless calories anyway. Alcohol usually leads to poor decision-making and food choices too, so it’s a win-win all round. Reward Yourself Make sure that you enjoy the season and allow yourself some of the pleasures that go along with it. Remember not to go overboard however and limit your indulgence of calorie-ridden items. An even better alternative is treating yourself to a day at the spa, or going shopping with friends, that way you know that your indulgence is of the healthier kind. and texture, and make the room look less than ordinary. For example, the use of low voltage lighting systems has become very popular over the past several years. Low voltage halogen and low voltage xenon, or LED lighting systems can be found in almost any setting and are often used by interior designers to enhance and highlight their scheme. These types of lighting systems usually come in the form of cabinet lighting, cove lighting, landscape lighting, picture lights, regular track lighting, flexible track lighting, cable lighting and under cabinet lighting. Table Chandeliers that are often hung over a dining or a central table should be more or less about 25 centimetres narrower than the table on each side. If you go for a crystal chandelier, be aware that grades of crystal vary immensely, so it's important to know your budget before you start shopping. An average crystal chandelier is going to impress almost everybody, but if you have discerning guests that you entertain on a regular basis, or if you are a connoisseur and prefer higher quality items, you might want to look into some higher-end quality crystal chandeliers. To really go over-the-top, you can look into rock crystal chandeliers made of the finest manufactured crystal quartz. Whilst chandeliers made of crystal are by far the most popular use of crystal for lighting solutions, they are by no means your only options. Crystal sconces, crystal candelabras and crystal table lamps can also light up a room and add a sense of style and grace to a living area. Why not show off your unique and creative flair and choose bespoke-made, porcelain chandeliers, such as the one shown in the image. Whatever your inclination, always keep in mind that lighting, either direct or indirect, low voltage or incandescent, should be consistent throughout as well as flattering and must also minimise glare. Equitable lighting across an entire space is recommended and adaptable lighting with a dimmer plays a big part in the total effect. ’m in love… But I have to confess that I have a bias towards Italian sports cars. They just have that stylish wow-factor that many others try to imitate, some succeeding better than others. As soon as you get into the GranTurismo Sport, you feel that you’re stepping into a dreamy movie from the 1960s, romantically cruising down the winding mountain roads with the lovely deep blue Mediterranean Sea glittering ahead of you… So does that reverie translate into reality in the Gulf, and does it translate today? Certainly the Maserati GTS, as it is also known, is a dream to drive — absolute beauty, power and speed, perfectly combined in an elegant Italian package. With the GTS, Maserati’s glorious past is translated into 2013 with panache. Undeniably, the GranTurismo Sport is one of the most beautiful cars — inside and out — on the market today. The exterior look is sportily aggressive but not overly so. It also has an air of striking, voluptuous chic about it. It definitely attracts attention and opens the fast lane when you hit the highway. Inside, you are greeted by a luxurious mix of leather, wood and metal. You can personalise your GTS with a plethora of options to tailor the exterior, interior and the driving dynamics to your exact liking. And of course, the infotainment systems are up to the level of today’s requirements and expectations of a car in this segment. The model that I had the pleasure to experience came fitted with two buttons for changing the gears instead of a traditional stick gearshift (which is also an available option if you wish). The two buttons, one with number ‘1’ on it and the other with letter ‘R’, are found where you would normally find the gear stick. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that ‘1’ means drive and ‘R’ means reverse. You have three driving modes to choose from: Automatic, Automatic Sport and Manual Sport, which you control from buttons on the centre console. The Automatic mode is perfect for every day city driving with creamy smooth handling. Changing to Sport mode, the suspension and gear changes are calibrated for maximum performance and it wakes up the engine noise as the exhaust valves open up. The real roaring sounds are achieved with the Manual Sport mode. I put the skills that I learned from the Ferrari F1 test drivers to use with the Manual Sport mode. Changing the gears with the paddle shifts is so much fun and seeing heads turn on the sidewalks with the bellowing sounds from under the bonnet is enough to get the adrenaline pumping and make any sports car junkie happy. The GTS is powered by a 4.7-litre Ferrari derived V8 engine with up to 454 horse powers; capable of catapulting the car from zero to 100-kilometres an hour in 4.8-seconds. Lovely! Both active and passive safety systems employ the latest safety

technology available in the motoring field. Among the many systems, it comes standard fitted with stability and traction controls, ABS and hydraulic braking assistance, parking sensors, tyre pressure monitoring systems, a series of airbags and many more. Child seat anchors are also built-in on the back seats for the benefit of those with young offspring. Talking of which, you can actually fit bigger kids (and adults) on the back seats quite comfortably without having to chop off their legs like in some other supposedly fourseater GTs. The Maserati GranTurismo Sport is a fantastic choice for sports car loving ladies. Its effortless style and poise, as well as the ease and excitement of driving, will surely satisfy even the most demanding diva. Assolutamente perfetto as they say in Italy…

elive history by trekking in old settlements and explore the religions that have shaped the region. Jordan's topography is amazing for nature lovers. Irrespective of your faith, an hour trip from Amman can take you to religious wonders. Visit Mount Nepo where Prophet Moses stood and viewed the Holy Land. Continue eastward and, like popes and many millions of Christian pilgrims, visit the site where Jesus was baptised by John the Baptist at Bethany Beyond the Jordan. On your way back to Amman, stop at Ma'adaba and visit St George's Greek Orthodox Church. The church is small but contains a remarkable mosaic map, dating from 560 AD, which portrays the entire ancient Holy Land; one of the earliest maps in human history made of mosaic. As you wander in the church around the map, orient yourself correctly because the top of the map is East from where the sun shines, not North. The small town is a workshop of mosaics. All souvenir shops are filled with different mosaics and handcrafts. For a few dinars, you can take a piece of that town with you. In their golden times in the third century, Nabataeans controlled part of modern day Jordan. Unlike Romans, they were great stone carvers not builders. They carved the stone mountains into livable cities. The best of their artwork is at Petra. Allow a full day to explore the large stone city, along with a good trekking stamina and expect to ride on donkeys, camels and horses to do your exploring. Walk down the Siq in the afternoon to appreciate the colours of the rock formations.

Nabataeans couldn't stop the ambitions of the Romans from conquering the region and adding it to their empire in the fifth century. In Amman, Romans built the temple of Hercules on the highest hill. Nowadays, it is called the Citadel. A large part of Amman can be viewed from above there, but the best part is that of the Roman Ampitheatre. The sheer size of it highlights the cultural complexity of Roman life. Yet, this is not the best Roman building in Jordan. Jarash is the grand formal provincial Roman urbanism found in the Middle East. It has colonnaded streets, elegant theaters, temples, and spacious public squares. Don't miss a souvenir picture of Hadrian's Arch at the entrance of the old city. Jarash can be done as a day trip from Amman. Following the Muslims' conquest of the Levant region in the seventh century, Jordan was quiet but a prosperous province during the Ummayad and Abbasid dynasties. When Crusaders made their way to Jerusalem in the early eleventh century, Jordan became the war grounds. Saladin built many castles for his long-term wars against crusaders. Karak castle is one of these that you can visit in Jordan. It is located south of Amman, on the way to Petra. Karak is like all medieval castles, set on top of a hill for military advantage. In Karak, view the valleys in the West and imagine how Saladin awaited the crusaders' army to leave Jerusalem before he beat them in the famous battle of Hittin. 88

From the fifteenth century, like all Arab worlds, Jordan became part of the Ottoman Empire. In WWII Arabs sided with the allied countries and revolted against the Ottomans. Lawrence of Arabia, the English officer, led the Arab forces and did the unthinkable by moving an army through the desert, crossed Wadi Rum and attacked the Ottoman garrison in Aqaba. In his book 'Seven Pillars of Wisdom', Lawrence describes the Arabian desert and Wadi Rum. Nowadays, one doesn't need an army, nor Lawrence's book, to enjoy the desert. Bedouins can take you on a fourwheel drive, or a stylish camel to the heart of Wadi Rum. You can sleep in a tent, drink Arabic coffee and listen to an Oud player at night. Simply, you can live like Lawrence for a day or two. Nothing has really changed since his time. As a souvenir, buy a coloured sand bottle from the Bedouins. When you are finally in Aqaba enjoy a walk by the sea like the locals, or maybe take a glass-bottom boat ride in the Gulf of Aqaba. You can see houses in Elat on the Israeli side. Diving in the Red Sea is a must for all certified divers. Don't miss it and allow a few extra days for that experience. While you can dive in the Red Sea, you can only float in the Dead Sea. The thick syrup-like salty water is an amazing phenomenon. Be careful though, not to get any water drops in your eyes, otherwise a red eye is going to be your souvenir.

he newly opened L’wzaar, which sits on the beach front at Katara, West Bay, is a sight for sore eyes for lovers of seafood. The restaurant is just one step removed from actually catching your fish, without the added hassle, as diners can choose what they like from a vast array, then decide how they would like it cooked in the indoor, interactive open kitchen, the barbeque grill or the fish and chips kiosk, before heading outside to dine beach-side. L’wzaar’s signature cuisine includes four different cooking styles, such as Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, Far Eastern and Japanese, with the menu emphasising freshness, high quality and a wide selection.

CRAB STICK SUSHI SALAD INGREDIENTS 40g Sushi Rice 5g Salt 5g Sugar 10g Rice vinegar 0.5g Nori (dried seaweed sheet) 20g Soy sauce 10g Wasabi 25g Crab stick 10g Cream cheese 10g Cucumber 10g Tobiko (flying fish roe) 10g Lettuce 10g Gari shoga (pickled ginger)

METHOD How to make sushi rice, first wash the rice with cold water, soak for about one hour in cold water then drain and leave for the whole night. Then cook the rice for about 15 minutes, once cooked, remove from the rice cooker and put into a wooden bowl. Remove any scorched rice then add the sushi rice vinegar sauce to the rice. For the sushi rice vinegar sauce, mix vinegar, salt and sugar. To make the rolls, first spread the rice evenly onto the nori, covering two thirds of the sheet. Then line the centre with the crab stick and other ingredients, rolling into square logs. Finally, slice into four pieces and place the salad on top, serving with wasabi, ginger and soy sauce. Sous Chef Russel Bleza Chef Russel Bleza, who is of Filipino heritage, started his career in California in 1992, working at the Benjihana of Tokyo restaurant, before taking up a position with the same company in New York in 1994, where he worked as a Teppanyaki and sushi chef until 1999. Having been in Doha for the best part of a decade, Chef Bleza was a chef de partie during the Doha Asian Games in 2006, then went on to work as commis chef at Roka restaurant in the Venetian Hotel. He is currently sous chef at L'wzaar and recently won a bronze medal at Difaya 2012 in the signature dish category.

The University of Calgary â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Qatar celebrated the third convocation of its Bachelor of Nursing, under the Patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser. Images by Sequin Miner

he graduates received their degrees in a ceremony attended by Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser on November 18. At the end of the ceremony, Her Highess graciously shook the hand of each graduate. Speaking on behalf of all present, Dr. Carolyn Byrne, UCQ’s outgoing Dean and CEO said, “Her highness Sheikha Moza’s presence here tonight sends a strong message to Qatar that healthcare, and nursing in particular, are noble professions and vital to the survival and growth of the community. It is a privilege for the University of Calgary – Qatar to be part of Qatar’s 2030 vision of being a healthy, resourceful, reach leader and well educated country.” “I am fulfilling a dream, not only for me but for my mother and every member of my family,” says Aisha Al Khayarin. “I have waited for such a long time and worked so hard and now my dream has come true.” Taibah Ahmed says, “Ever since I was a child I wanted to be a nurse. I have always cared about people and wanted to have the ability to save someone’s life. I believe I can now do that with my nursing degree. I hope I can make nursing more effective here and improve the image of nursing.” Along with earning her degree, Taibah also managed to give birth to a girl and a boy. Several of the grads had to juggle their time between studying, working, spending time with their family and trying to have some form of social life. Houda Al Kilani has a three-year-old daughter. “When I joined UCQ, my daughter was small; for a moment I thought I would not be able to manage. I was a part-time student with a full-time job. But I managed to complete BSN and I also managed to make the Dean’s List. I want to thank all those who supported me through this journey; with their care and blessing, I want to thank my husband, my family and my friends for helping me make my dream come true.” Sailanie Caleja says on the occasion, “Young kids always capture my heart. So, when I joined the program, I made up my mind that I wanted to become a paediatric nurse. It didn’t matter to me where I’d be working, as long as I am working with children. And now, my wish has come true. I am employed in Hamad Paediatrics Emergency.” The Class of 2012 is a varied group with many talents and each one has an interesting history. Aisha Mohamed Yousif kept herself very busy while studying for her degree. She was a member of the Student Council. She was involved in two undergraduate research projects and was the recipient of two Academic Excellence Awards. Aisha was also a member of the first group of Qatar students who went to Calgary–Canada on an exchange program. She is interested in neurology and mental health. She also has plans to further her nursing education. Munachiso Bob-Ume comes from a family of eight. There are many nurses in her family, including a sister who is also a UCQ alumnus. Munachiso kept herself very busy while studying too. She was president of the Nursing Students’ Society and was involved in a neuroscience research project. She is presently employed at the Heart Hospital. Yassmin Hussein also comes from a nursing family. Her mother is employed at Hamad Hospital. She was proud of her work in two undergraduate research projects. She presented her research findings at a conference in Vancouver, Canada. She helped start the Nursing Student Society pioneers and served as vice-president social for one year. Millicent Kolehmainen is already employed as a nurse in Finland. She is also pursuing her Master’s Degree in Nursing. The grads and UCQ are extremely grateful to the State of Qatar and to Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser for having the foresight to bring the nursing program to Qatar and for making it a part of its plan to make the country sustainable and prosperous through the 2030 vision. UCQ would like to pay special tribute to the families of the students who have supported them through their journey. They would also like to acknowledge the dedication and hard work of their faculty in the graduates’ and all students’ success. Congratulations to the Class of 2012.

Have a go at glass sculpture with your pre-schooler this December at just one of several family workshops taking place at the MIA this month. The Glass sculpture workshops, for three to five-year-olds, is a three part series (10am on December 5, 12 and 19) where children will create their own version of a glass sculpture and start a picture book with their favourite work of art. The workshop will finish off with an artistic adventure through the museum itself. Other workshops at the museum include the Legend of the Mask (1pm to 3pm on December 8, 15, 22 and 29), for the six to 10 year old age group. Inspired by the MIA’s 15th Century War Mask, children will embark on a historic adventure by transforming themselves into mask craftsmen. This two-part workshop involves learning about masks from around the globe and the art of mask making. Children will learn to explore symmetry and pattern through the creation of their very own masterpieces, using similar techniques practiced by mask makers thousands of years ago. WHY GO? 'Encounter': the Royal Academy in the Middle East, is a collaborative project between Katara and the Royal Academy of Arts in London. With works by 50 artists, equally distributed between Royal Academicians and prominent artists from the Middle East, the Gulf States and Qatar in particular, the exhibition will feature around 100 works in a wide range of media. The aim of 'Encounter' is to provide a platform for dialogue amongst artists working in a wide range of media — painting, sculpture, assemblage, photography and video — and for an international team of curators to exchange ideas about different communities and environments and how this translates into visual art experience. The Royal Academy of Arts counts among its members many of the world’s most renowned artists, spanning generations and working in a variety of styles and techniques. Many are rightfully recognised as influential pioneers of contemporary art. The participating Middle East artists are among the most established and eminent talents emerging from around the region. This unique combination of artists presents a rich and dynamic cross-section of cultural perspectives.

BOOKS GALORE December 12 to 22

WHY GO? Organised jointly by the Ministry of Culture and the Doha International Book Fair Committee, and co-partnered Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Publishing and Maktaba, the Twenty-Third Doha International Book Fair is expected to attract thousands of publishers, authors and book fans over the ten days. The fair offers an array of events, including talks, discussions, readings and activities for younger readers. For younger children the community organisation Maktaba will be running bi-lingual Arabic and English reading sessions with activities every day for schools during the week and the public on weekends. Meanwhile in the evening, talks by bestselling local and international authors will be taking place, with live translation available for the first time in the Book Fair’s history. Authors giving talks include Abdulaziz Al Mahmoud, Ahmen Khaled Towfiq and Ibrahim Essa.

SWEET MUSIC FROM THE PHIL Various dates in December WHY GO? The Qatar Philharmonic offers four types of concerts in nine days of December, an orchestral concert featuring one of the most famous symphonies ever written, chamber music in its Opera House, free chamber music at the Museum of Islamic Art and family concerts with a December classic. At the Philharmonic’s December 7 concert its 101 musicians from 30 countries will play Franz Schubert’s ‘Unfinished Symphony’. No one knows why the piece was written or why Schubert didn’t compose a final movement. The music, which anticipates the romantic era in music, was only performed 43 years after its composition, decades after Schubert’s death. The concert also includes Franz ‘Liszt’s Les Preludes’ and new music from Greece. Parents and children can enjoy the fairy-tale opera, Hansel and Gretel, in concert form with international singers, on Thursday, December 13 in special programs at the Ladies Club in Aspire. With its tale of a gingerbread house, Hansel and Gretel is a traditional December offering. Doha audiences will have two opportunities to hear chamber music from Philharmonic musicians, both concerts including the Brahms Clarinet Quintet. On December 5 in the comfort of the Opera House this music will be joined with Russian music including Alexander Borodin’s Second String Quartet. Borodin was one of the famous Russian Five. On December 6 a free concert in the Museum of Islamic Art will include a quartet by one of the Turkish Five, Ulvi Cemal Erkin.

Business Best jewellery award to Noor

Cartier award

Noor Ali Alfardan, Vice President of Alfardan Jewellery in Qatar, has won the Best Fashionable Jewellery Design Award at the Eighth Middle East Premier Awards for watches, jewellery and pens in Bahrain. The award was presented to Noor Alfardan for the double ring jewellery piece she personally designed as part of her exclusive Noudar jewellery collection, which was launched at the Doha Jewellery and Watch Exhibition earlier this year. The grand ceremony, which saw awards given away in 23 categories, was held on the sidelines of Jewellery Arabia 2012, and was attended by a distinguished cross section of over 300 invitation-only high profile guests. Noor Alfardan said: “It is an absolute honour to win this coveted award that recognises the talents of young Arab designers, not to mention female designers in the GCC. I dedicate this award to the ingenuity and dynamism of the entire Alfardan Group, especially the Jewellery Division, which has consistently set new benchmarks in design and craftsmanship.”

Cartier has announced Iba Masood, founder of “Gradberry” project, as the winner of the Cartier Women’s Initiative Awards 2012 MENA region. The awards were announced at a gala ceremony held at the Annual Global Meeting of the Women’s Forum in Deauville, France. Iba Masood based in the United Arab Emirates, was chosen in recognition of the “Gradberry” project among 1,000 applicants and was one of the three women to make it to the 2012 finals, which also included Nermin Saad for “Handasiyat.net” project from Jordan and Rania Seddik for “Gebraa for Egyptian Treasures” project from Egypt. Masood was awarded US$20,000 in funding towards her business and a year of personal coaching from the world’s best business management consultants from INSEAD business school and McKinsey & Co. for management consultancy. The Cartier Women’s Initiative Awards was created in 2006, and it is a joint partnership between Cartier, the Women’s Forum, INSEAD business school and management consultancy McKinsey & Company.

’m on a plane. En route to Dubai after almost a month of New York City, Los Angeles, Miami, presidential elections, memorable forums, marvellous galas, random ‘Bond’ nights, momentary shopping and unexpected hurricanes. T’was an interesting time, with many, many wondrous moments. Some of which were mildly aggravated by this American school of thought that tips are somehow compulsory? (Sorry, but I need to talk about this for just a minute). As far as I know, the concept of tipping is based on choice. When did so many waiters come to the conclusion that it was ever some kind of mandatory obligation? I am not to blame for your Government/boss’ decisions to keep you on minimum wage. Nope. Not me. Not the one. Rant over. Back to the moments… Sandy decided to unleash her wrath during my time in the Big Apple. That wasn’t so fun. I did see large chunks of NYC in complete darkness though. Very ‘I Am Legend’. A bit surreal. Brooklyn's energy, always on point. Halloween was taken VERY seriously. Costumes and dancing amidst natural disasters. Commendable spirits. Finally got my nails done by the city’s Naomi (I did wait, quite some time, for this glorious occasion). Loved the Angel Ball. And my Orkalia gown. And Denise Rich. And my friends. And Smokey Robinson. And Natalie Cole. And Ms Mama Knowles. And Solange's dress. And the boom boom room. Grateful to The Mark Hotel — turned Sandy refugee camp — for such a wonderful stay. LA was LA Crazy, relaxed, random, same same, fun, yet dull, beautiful, and ugly (not many places can do all this at the same time). Went to Inglewood. Joined the cast of ‘ABG’ on filming of their last ever episode. That… was just… excellent. London pride on the debut of Kesh's photo exhibition. Also, brilliant. One’s Hollywood abode remained as gorgeous as it always is. The marquis, I thank you. My one stand with Miami did not include South Beach. Yes... shocking I know, considering the infamously ratchet environment. I was

actually there for ABC’s Continuity Forum, which took place at Coconut Grove’s Ritz Hotel. A gathering of social entrepreneurs from across the Americas intermingled with an impressive mix of investors and global experts, all with a common purpose to conscientiously innovate. Environmentally expand. aomi Humanitarianly (is that a word?) harness ous N notori e business opportunity for the greater good… h t esy of you should catch my drift at this point. The two young leaders shared on common challenges when it comes to community development in their home regions. They drew upon similarities in tribal lifestyle, and shed light on the importance of technology when relating to youth generations. Monumental things. That’s just how we operate. Onto 2013.
