HISTORY

Since the company was founded in 1976, Öhlins has represented the pinnacle of suspension technology and firmly rooted itself as an integral part of the motorsport industry, underpinning countless world titles and podium finishes. Öhlins technology is not only considered the gold standard within the aftermarket suspension industry, but also by car, motorcycle, and mountain bike manufacturers across the globe.

Back in the 1960s, Kenth Öhlin was an up-and-coming motocross rider who showed an innate talent for mechanics. He knew how to bring out the best in the materials he used, and soon found himself modifying his competitors’ bikes. By the time he started his business, he’d already designed his own exhaust pipes, engines, and of course — shock absorbers.

Öhlins grew to become synonymous with advanced suspension. The products were not only superior in terms of technology, but also in quality — a testament to Kenth Öhlin’s meticulous nature. In 1978, Öhlins won its first world championship, when Russian motocross racer Gennady Moiseev took home the 250cc title on an Öhlins-equipped KTM. Since then, more than 400 world titles have followed. Öhlins aimed to build on its success in road racing, and soon entered the automotive segment — in racing, as well as rally — further strengthening its motorsport pedigree.

But Öhlins didn’t stop there. The company continued to grow, adding electronically controlled, semi-active suspension to its portfolio under the trademark CES. This technology revolutionized the automotive industry and is widely used by premium car manufacturers today.

In 1998, Öhlins partnered with Tenneco Inc. to develop CES valve technology for automotive applications. They jointly launched the first CES shock absorbers as standard equipment on the Volvo S60R performance car in 2003. Fast forward to November 2018, Kenth Öhlin announced an agreement to sell a majority share of Öhlins Racing AB® to Tenneco Inc. The acquisition was finalized in January 2019, marking the beginning of a new era for Öhlins as part of Tenneco.

BUILDING ON OUR RACING LEGACY FROM F1 TO YOUR RIDE

Öhlins has been a pillar of racing for over four decades and counting. We’ve used the insights gained from working with some of the world’s most high-profile racing teams to develop and innovate products across every segment, enabling riders worldwide to experience the pinnacle of suspension technology.

This year, we were proud to announce our technical partnership with the iconic Scuderia Ferrari. For over five years, Öhlins Racing has been developing and supplying suspension for the Scuderia Ferrari cars, providing advanced technical and support when needed. Our goal is to ensure the drivers experience the best possible suspension performance during every race – no matter how extreme the conditions get.

WHAT WE’VE LEARNED FROM MOTORSPORT

They say that competition improves the breed, but here at Öhlins, competition created the breed. Since day one, we’ve been a company with a singular focus: winning races. From Kenth Öhlin’s first prototype in 1976 to the computer designed and tested masterpieces we make today, every Öhlins unit is designed to give you total control, even as you push the edge of the performance envelope. As our engineers say, the ground gives better traction than air, and every Öhlins product is designed with one clear mission: to maximize traction, cornering speed, and control in your car, bike, ATV, or snowmobile. That’s how you win races!

We have an open dialogue with every team we support. Kenth Öhlin decided long ago that we would never sponsor teams with free products — every team you see winning on Öhlins does so by choice, not obligation. The fact that so many teams forgo free products to pay for ours speaks to the quality and performance of Öhlins’ suspension products for racing.

Over 400 world titles and thousands of podiums have been achieved on Öhlins, in every discipline — from Touring and GT cars to prototypes, Formula One, and Indy cars, from the WRC to World Superbikes, MX-GP, and MotoGP. In every partnership, we work closely with the team’s technical division for a two-way flow of information, which enables

us to both analyze data and evaluate performance. We channel these results into the ideation and design of new products, as well as the continuous improvement of existing lines. We transfer the lessons we’ve learned from winning races directly to our aftermarket programs, where the genuine enthusiasts can benefit from premium forks, steering dampers, and suspension systems.

Motorsport means the world to us. We have 30+ employees who are solely dedicated to high-end racing support and service. This team regularly briefs our designers on their results ‘from the field’ to ensure that every Öhlins customer — whether they’re a Factory Le Mans team, or a single discerning enthusiast — gets the best possible performance out of their machine.

We test everything – and then we test again. But data can only tell you so much. At Öhlins, it has always been as much about ‘feel’ as it has been about the numbers. If it feels ‘right’ to the driver or rider, then that’s even more important than the dry statistics. We’re drivers, too. And once you’ve driven on the product, you’ll feel the difference.

highest level of suspension technology – these are true racing products.

The TTX products come in a variety of dimensions, lengths, and designs, all tested by our qualified test drivers. With individual adjusters for the compression and rebound valve, you’ll be able to find the perfect set up for your car on track day. When you drive to the absolute limit, it puts a tremendous amount of stress on your equipment, from the tires, suspension, brakes, bushings and more. Öhlins TTX technology allows you to push your car to the edge of performance.

Shock absorbers can experience loss of damping and cavitation when they’re pushed past the limit of optimal performance. With Öhlins TTX technology, we’re proud to say that our unique design has eliminated the cavitation. TTX technology keeps the internal pressure of the shock absorber consistently balanced. You’ll never experience a drop in pressure or loss of damping performance, even when you reach the limit while trying to achieve the fastest lap times.

The Öhlins TTX shock absorbers are race friendly – easy to set up, dial in, and rebuild. And don’t forget, support is always available from Öhlins distributors worldwide.

ÖHLINS ADVANCED TRACKDAY THE CONCEPT

Perfection in performance — this has been the Öhlins way since 1976. Every aspect of the Öhlins manufacturing process is driven by our attention to detail and obsession with quality. Whether it’s our choice of material, design, manufacture, or even the finishing touches like packaging, Öhlins consistently sets new standards for the automotive industry. We don’t let any product leave our factory until it’s 100% perfect. Our Advanced Trackday range puts Öhlins’ sky-high standards of research, development, and manufacturing well within reach of the most discerning auto enthusiasts. This range is pure Öhlins, but here’s the good news — you won’t need a racing team budget to afford it.

For us, the relationship with our customers is usually a long and fruitful one. We have supplied many of the top teams in motorsport, but also thousands of genuine enthusiasts. We only manufacture to one quality and every new client is as important as the last. In our view, the relationship doesn’t end with that initial sale. We see our role as providing support and back up thereafter, for as long as our client needs it. That’s why all Öhlins units are fully serviceable and adjustable, making sure that they give faithful and dynamic service for years to come. Our fully trained and approved service centers can make your old Öhlins units perform like new and even make changes in damper characteristics to suit your set-up preferences.

The Advanced Trackday range was born right out of our Motorsport program, where the impossible must be made possible, so you can expect the same level of care and attention to detail in our Advanced Trackday range. One of the key factors behind Öhlins’ success has been our choice of ma-

terials. Each component is surface treated to minimize friction and ensure superior performance. The piston shaft and damper walls are microfinished and plateau honed for optimal lubricity and a low coefficient of friction. This attention to detail is consistent across the entire range of Öhlins products. Without fine surface finishing, excessive friction can reduce the compliancy of the damper and cause a loss of function.

On the Advanced Trackday units, damping rate is 2-way adjustable. With individual compression and rebound adjusters, you’ll be able to fine-tune the handling characteristics and optimize your performance effortlessly. Despite what other suspension manufacturers may tell you, comfort is king, even when you’re setting up a competition machine. Our years of experience in global motorsport events have shown us that the fastest drivers and riders are those who aren’t being shaken to the core as they go flat out. The ‘science of compliance’ is central to our design philosophy, as is durability. But hey, we’re Swedish — we’re used to building components that can handle the elements. The carbon steel bodies are salt spray tested and can withstand wear without compromising performance. Don’t let the stunning race car looks fool you — these are hardwearing units designed for maximum comfort and performance. of their cars even further.

ÖHLINS ADVANCED TRACKDAY DEVELOPMENT PROCEDURE

Ever wondered how the Öhlins development process works when we develop an Advanced Trackday kit? If so, keep on reading and be amazed by how much work we put into every new application.

It’s a step-by-step process, which starts with our test drivers driving the car on our racetracks, then on public roads just outside of Stockholm to set a benchmark. The goal is to collect enough data about the current setup from driving on the racetrack, as well on public roads.

Which data are we interested in? We measure all specific parameters of the suspension, such as the motion ratios, ride height, roll center, etc. We also perform a corner weight of the car. These data are vital for the next stages of our development process. With our purpose-built software, we develop an initial setting with feedback from our test drivers. From the first setting, we can begin to build an early proposal damper setting and spring stiffness.

When the computer-based model is developed, it’s time to build and fit the first Öhlins Advanced Trackday prototypes to the car.

With the prototypes fitted to the car, our technicians and engineers hand over the car to our test drivers again. A first shakedown is performed on the racetrack to make sure we have a safe product.

After the shakedown, we begin to stress the dampers with high-speed maneuvers, and we also find out if the computer modeling of our damp-

er settings and spring stiffness are correct. Though our dampers are primarily intended to be used on the racetrack, our engineers and test drivers also dedicate time to finding the right balance between track and road use.

The process to find the optimal settings may take some time. Öhlins is a perfection-oriented company, and that is evident in our development process. If our test drivers and engineers aren’t pleased with a particular setting, they readjust it until they are sure it is just right for the track.

The final step in the Öhlins Advanced Trackday Development Process is to finalize and prepare the dampers for production. All documentation and prototypes used during the development phases are saved for regulatory compliance to meet legal demands.

The Öhlins Advanced Trackday Development Process is executed for every single car model. Every setting is tailor-made and evaluated thoroughly before being transferred to series production. Our test drivers spend countless hours testing and validating the perfect setup, which ensures the best possible handling characteristics and feeling. We develop our dampers after careful calculations to secure a high-quality product that is safe to use when driving on the absolute edge of performance. All in all, Öhlins Advanced Trackday group takes care of testing and development to find the optimal performance so you can focus on racing your car with a smile. Drive safe!
