Alleged kidnapper faces five felony charges By KATHRYN DIXON Staff writer
Alleged kidnapper Steven Tekam, originally arrested for three counts of attempting kidnapping, false imprisonment and brandishing a knife is now facing a count carrying a potential sentence of life in prison. According to court records, Tekam has pled not guilty to a formal complaint filed by the District Attorney. It accuses Tekam of five felony counts: carjacking, attempted kidnap, false imprisonment, theft of a vehicle and possession or control of
child pornography. The court record shows that on three of these counts
Tekam faces an additional charge of using a deadly weapon – a knife. Count I is a violation of California Penal Code or CPC Section 215, carjacking, carries a maximum prison term of 9 years. Court II is a violation of CPC Section 209.5, attempted kidnap during the commission of a carjack carries a potential sentence of life with possibility of Photo courtesy Ohlone TV parole. When she rolled down the passenger window of her car to speak to him, he reached in, opened the lock and entered the car. Authorities claim he threatened her with a knife. He did not take the victim’s wallet when she offered it. He asked her questions at knifepoint. A minor male and a minor female suddenly entered the car. The victim complied with Tekam’s order at knifepoint that she get into the back seat. When she tried to escape
he grabbed her. She screamed for help. Students ran to her aid, and Tekam fled with the two minors down Mission Boulevard. The victim did not suffer knife wounds, but had bruises. The victim, an Ohlone student, is over the age of 18 years. Confidentiality of the investigation has kept the nature of the child pornography offense under wraps. Tekam’s motives, according to the available record, seem murky. On Wed. Sept. 15, Officer Ben Peralta spotted Tekam on campus near Hyman Hall and arrested him. Tekam allegedly confessed. He is Fremont resident and is not an Ohlone student.
