Pipeline not an imminent danger Suspect arrested in Parking Lot D case

By KATHERYN DIXON Staff writer

Dr. Gari Browning wrote a letter to PG&E asking a series of questions about the safety of the natural gas pipeline on the southern border of the Fremont campus, which runs east to west.

Browning said PG&E “promised it would put to-

gether more details by the end of this week. It is compiling information on gas pipelines in the area and answers to my specific questions.”

These questions included the exact size of the pipeline, its age, condition and whether it is safe.

Browning said the pipeline on the southern border does

not run under any of Ohlone’s buildings.

It is not on PG&E’s list of 100 high risk pipelines in California, which PG&E released online to the public Sept. 21.

There is, however, a high risk pipeline running through Fremont on the other side of Interstate 680, a few miles north of Fremont.

STAR act will streamline process for transfer students

By KATHERYN DIXON Staff writer

A new law and an Ohlone event may ease the process of transferring from community college to a four-year program.

Ohlone College will hold Transfer Day on Oct. 6 in Building 7, first floor.

Information will be available for all students to explore opportunities for transfer.

Students can meet with college representatives from the

CSU campuses, the University of California campuses and many private colleges.

Clarification of a student’s transfer options will be provided.

A meeting regarding “How to Transfer Successfully” will be held from 1:40 p.m. to 2:20 p.m. in Room 8112, Building 8, first floor.

A workshop regarding early care and education will be

conducted from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. in Room 122 of the Childhood Development Center.

The Student Transfer Achievement Reform Act, Senate Bill 1440 (STAR Act), was passed by the State Assembly and Senate passed it unanimously in August.

It then went to the governor’s office and Schwarzenegger signed the STAR act into law on Wednesday.

The main suspect in the attempted kidnapping in Parking Lot D has been arrested.

On Wednesday Sept. 15, Officer Ben Peralta observed a man near Hyman Hall that fit the description of one of the three main suspects.

The man near Hyman was identified as Fremont resident Steven Tekam.

He confessed and named his two accomplices according to Chief of Campus Security Steven Osawa.

Tekam was being held in lieu of $120,000 bail at the Santa Rita jail in Dublin.

According to the District Attorney’s office Tekam is charged with five counts ranging from attempted kidnapping to brandishing a weapon.

He is not a currently enrolled student at Ohlone.

The Fremont police department said the witness in this case is extremely credible.

The incident occurred in Parking Lot D on Sept. 13 when a student got in her car.

Tekam allegedly opened the passenger door and got into the vehicle.He proceeded to ask her questions and pulled out a kitchen life.

A second male and female, who were seen with him earlier in Parking Lot C, then entered the witness’ car. These two are reportedly juvieniles.

The victim offered her wallet. However, it was discarded. As she attempted to escape, Tekam grabbed her while someone else pulled her hair.

Pakistan floods receive slow global response

By Sara Nasir Staff Writer

The flooding in Pakistan began in July 2010 and the effects could last for years to come.

The response to the crisis has not matched the extent of the damage. Time is running out for the victims of this disaster. They need our help and they need it now; we cannot be indifferent anymore.

The devastating rains and floods have affected more than 15 million people.

The total number of people affected exceeds the number of victims of the tsunami that hit eastern Asia in 2004, the Haiti earthquake and the recent earthquake in Pakistan.

Although the world had access to the situation through the global media and Internet, the international response to the floods in Pakistan was sluggish. $742 million was com-

mitted to Haiti and likewise $10 billion was donated for the tsunami relief in 2004.

According to the most recent reports, Pakistan has received approximately $322 million.

The response to the Pakistan floods was slow and ungenerous. This could be due to the lack of media coverage in the most damaged areas.

Many flood stricken areas are inaccessible and thus reporters and journalists could not reach the places most deeply affected.

Another explanation for the lack of donations could be the rapid worldwide mobilization after Haiti’s earthquake in January.

At a time of economic crisis, the funds to help Pakistan may now be lacking.

Pakistan’s image internationally, however, is a major setback as well.

When a magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck Pakistan earlier this year, questions of

corruption and mismanagement rose with the foreign aid that was donated. President Zardari’s decision to continue his European tour in the aftermath of the flooding did little to inspire confidence in his ability to deal with the aftermath of the disaster.

The fear of “terrorism” also plays a large part in holding people back from donating to the cause.

Many fear that their donations might not reach the right hands and could be used to fund terrorist activities.

The fear is understandable, but donations could be made to reliable resources such as the United Nations or the Imran Khan Foundation.

What we really fail to realize is that those affected by the floods are innocent children and families.

Nearly 8.5 million children are in need of humanitarian assistance.

The United Nations has

warned that tens of thousands of children are at risk of dying from malnutrition.

The education of schoolchildren is suffering, and even though some emergency camps have been set up to provide services for these children, they are not enough.

Families are vulnerable to water contamination, skin diseases and malaria. Medical camps have been set up, but they do not meet the needs of the people.

Also, there is not enough shelter for the affected families; some of them are residing under the open sky. Winters are creeping in slowly and families do not have warm clothes or tents.

Victims have not only lost their homes, possessions and family members but have also lost hope. They are not sure what they will eat or feed their children.

Furthermore, the government was struggling with

the country’s economic crisis before the flooding occurred, and will struggle to provide the appropriate relief to its people without much international assistance.

After all, 14 percent of all the cultivated land in Pakistan has been damaged, and food crops such as grain, sugar cane and rice harvests have been washed away.

Since Pakistan’s economy is based on agriculture; losses in the nations cash crops, tobacco and cotton are straining the already struggling country.

It is clear that these families in Pakistan are in desperate need of help from the international community.

But are we hesitating because we have become oblivious to humanity, or consumed by a materialized world.

The STAR act will impose essentially uniform CSU course requirements for all transfer students.

Now transfer agreements vary because they are from a community college to a state college and are not based on system-wide standards.

This can make the transfer process difficult.

It often results in students taking courses in excess of those which are required to transfer.

Consequently, earning a degree takes longer and total tuition costs are higher.

Some students, frustrated with the transfer process, drop out.

The STAR act will impose efficiency and results in cost savings of approximately

$160 million annually, according to Jack Scott, California community colleges Chancellor.

And the savings will allow about 40,000 additional students to attend community colleges and approximately 14,000 additional students to attend a California State University each year.

The California Legislative Analyst’s Office reported that community college students who transfer into a California State University graduate with an average of 162 units.

The minimum requirement is 120 units.

The California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office reported that the approximately 50,000 community college students who transfer annually to the

California State University system do so with an average of 80 semester units.

Only 60 semester units are required.

When students arrive at a California State University from a community college, they often take excess units to make up for courses that did not transfer.

The STAR act will not necesssarily guarantee a student admission for campuses or majors he or she chooses.

Instead, it would require that every student obtains priority admission into the local CSU campus – Ohlone’s local CSU campus is the California State University, East Bay. It would grant admission to a program or major which the CSU, admitting

the student, determines is similar to his or her community college major or area of emphasis.

This bill would authorize the CSU campus, admitting the student to require.

If necessary, that the student take additional coursework at the CSU campus.

However, the bill would prohibit the CSU campus from requiring a transferring student to repeat courses similar to those already taken at the community college to achieve the associate degree required for the transfer.

In assessing the impact of the STAR act on Ohlone College and its students, Jim Wright VP of Academic Affairs said, “If the Governor signs the legislation, and if the intent of the

legislation can be implemented by the community colleges and the CSU and UC systems, the resulting programs would be a very positive improvement for students hoping transfer from community colleges to CSUs or UCs. The challenge is to find a common transfer curriculum that all community colleges can provide and all CSU and UC campuses will accept for transfer.

The legislation calls for a special task force representing the three sectors (community colleges, CSU and UC) to work out the details.

It will be a complex task to get all 110 community colleges, 23 CSU campuses, and 10 UC campuses to agree on a common curriculum”.

Club days goes Bananas at the carnival

Evelyn Henderson lab opens in Building 6

The Ohlone College Deaf Center has realized a longawaited goal. It has finally been pulled into the digital age.

The brand new Deaf Studies lab, with new computers, flexible hours and a hub-like environment, students can now meet more people and have time to spend with each other all while receiving instruction more freely and easily.

The new Deaf Studies lab in Building 6 had its official grand opening on Sept. 21 and has completely modernized deaf instruction.

According to coordinator of the Interpreter Preparation

Program Shelley Lawrence, all of the ASL classes’ stimulus materials are being digitized so the students can instantly skip to the point where they left off in a lesson.

All of the previous instructions were on videotapes that had to be rewound in a time consuming manner if anyone needed to go back.

“This has totally revolutionized the way instructors teach and it really allows us to move into the digital age,” Lawrence commented. She said that since all of the new computers have cameras, students can have their lessons and see if they are doing the correct motions while they learn.

What started in 1972 with only 30 deaf and hard of hearing individuals has grown to

become one of the largest programs to academically and vocationally serve approximately 200 deaf and hard of hearing students, as well as students who are interested in Deaf Studies, totaling up to 700 students.

The grant was $200,000, and was given by the Evelyn Henderson’s estate through the East Bay Community Foundation, as well as an additional $50,000 given by Ohlone.

The lab has new Mac computers and new furniture, which came from KI Furniture and both rooms have smart room technology for more involved instruction.

Smart rooms are rooms that are modified to have overhead projectors, projection

screens and computers so that examples for lessons can even be drawn from the Internet.

Also, all of the lessons have been digitized from their VHS video library. Plans for the lab have been in the making for years. “The faculties have wanted to have this for a long time,” said Dr. Genie Gertz, about the plans.

Now, all of the students can watch lessons, and rewind them freely and easily in a more flexible and modern environment.

“The students will also have more interaction with the faculty members who have scheduled their office hours to take place in the lab so that they will be readily available to students for tutoring and for other assistance,” Gertz

added.

When asked about her reaction to the success of opening the new lab, Lawrence said “I think it has been a long time coming, with technology today. I could show you many sites that offer ASL vlogs and we’ve come a long way.”

“We could not be more proud and pleased. This allowed us to create a state of the art lab, which is a significant contribution not only to the deaf community, but also to the general cultural life of the society in which we all live. And the best part is that it is happening at Ohlone,” Lawrence said.

The Deaf Studies lab will be available to students from Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m to 6:30 p.m.

Ever been dragged somewhere you really didn’t want to go and when you finally got there you absolutely loved it? That happened to me this past weekend.

I was invited to go whale watching last weekend by some friends who attend UC Davis.

As soon as I found out that in order to see the whales I was going to have to hike for 16 miles, I point blank refused to go.

There was no way I was going to hike 16 miles to do anything; it’s just not going to happen!

After I told my friends I wasn’t going anymore, they changed their hiking plans and assured me that we would drive to the trail closest to the whales.

With these new promises in tow and the threat I would complain, moan and torment them if they were lying to me and actually made me hike 16 miles, I reluctantly agreed to go.

We drove to a place an hour outside of San Francisco called Point Reyes.

Point Reyes is known for its hiking trails, lighthouse, its point and its whale watching.

I have to say I was a little apprehensive on the drive up, but as soon as I got out, I understood why I had just sat in a car for three hours.

It was absolutely gorgeous.

It was so much fun to walk through the trails, appreciating nature, looking off the cliffs and seeing the waves crash against the shore.

What was especially fun was to watch people excitedly point to a rock and exclaim, “I see one, there’s a whale,” only to have their excitement shattered when someone else in their party shook their head, pat them on the back and say, “No dude. That’s a rock.”

However, I can honestly say, I did see a whale. When I saw something pop out of the sea and spout water into the air I knew that I had spotted my very first whale.

And let me tell you it was an absolutely incredible sight!

Since free market reforms were first introduced in the late 70’s, China’s economy has expanded rapidly, transforming the country to a bona fide superpower.

This year, China surpassed Japan in the second quarter GDP and became the world’s second largest economy, behind the United States.

Some experts estimate that China could surpass the US and become the world’s largest economy as early as 2030.

The opportunity to see China in this critical stage of transition as it ascends to economic domination was given to nine Ohlone College students.

The students: Elson Luk, Richard Le, Daniel Yang, Mark Speers, Diane Koralic, Long Nguyen, Vivian Lam, Grace Ye and Sarah Hashemi, were accepted to the Global Business Immersion excursion program in June of 2010.

The program was led by Christine Bolt, a professor of Business Administration and Technology, and was accompanied by Cynthia Katona who is a professor of English and Women’s Studies.

The group spent June 1-24 in China, splitting their time between the cities of Shanghai and Suzhou.

Bolt said “China was chosen as the first trip destination because it gave the students the opportunity to see an economy transition successfully from a planned economy to much more of a free market economy.”

“China is in the midst of an industrial revolution, with an emerging middle class and consistently high Gross Domestic Product growth,” she continued.

Participating students were

required to register for the two-unit Global Business Immersion class, which is a part of Ohlone’s recently created International Business Certificate.

The new certificate program is funded by a federal grant that was awarded to Ohlone in Spring 2008 by the Department of Education.

The grant partially subsidized the China Immersion trip, cutting the cost to $1,999, which covered tours, airfare, accommodations and group meals.

Living in another culture for three weeks was “a great experience,” said International Business major Mark Speers. “I learned a lot about how the Chinese people live efficiently in such a crowded space. The business aspect was also interesting because the people would rather get to know you than deal with business in the start.”

Students participated in a variety of educational and cultural activities, including visits to several businesses and tourist attractions.

The group visited manufacturing plants such as Caterpillar, Bao Steel, TT Electronics, Nilit Nylon Technologies and Avery-Dennison, where they were able hear from speakers on topics concerning international business.

During the business meetings, they were able to view operations and hear from various speakers on topics encompassing every aspect of international business.

Bao Steel, a state-owned company, is the largest steel and iron producer in China and the third largest steel producer in the world.

The group, hard hats and all, toured the massive Shanghai facility widely known by the locals as “a city within a city”. They walked down the

length of the facility while watching a white-hot metal brick pounded out into thin sheets of steel.

While in Suzhou, the majority of business meetings were located in the SIP, or the Suzhou Industrial Park.

The students were also able to visit King and Wood Law Firm and speak with several of their partners, including the first female partner of the law firm.

The Chinese based firm, which has offices across China as well as one in Palo Alto, had represented the Chinese government in all legal matters involved with the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.

“This trip has definitely given me a broader knowledge of the international business world,” said Richard Le. “ I have learned that China is now the main place for businessmen and corporations who want to expand their operations and ventures.

China’s economy is on the rise and it shows no signs of slowing down,” Le continued.

One particular highlight of the trip was the Shanghai World Expo—featuring pavilions showcasing the cultures of countries all over the world.

Business major Vivian Lam said, “We had a wonderful time there. Most of the pavilions were interesting and they really demonstrated the cultural differences between the countries.”

Although China is a thoroughly modern nation, evidence of its long history is always on display. For all the industrialization the country has undergone, traditional businesses continue to thrive.

The students witnessed this when they visited a tea farm in a small village on an island in the middle of Lake Taihu and during their visit to a traditional silk factory.

In Suzhou, students participated in a cultural excursion, the Dragon Boat Festival, or Duanwu. It is a traditional holiday featuring dragon boat racing and performances.

Other cultural visits included areas such as Qibao, an Ancient Town in Shanghai, the Humble Administrator’s Garden and Master of Nets Garden in Suzhou.

“From my perspective the Global Business Immersion: China study abroad program was a tremendous success,” said Eddie West, director of International Programs and Services at Ohlone.

West said “We had nine highly motivated students, from diverse backgrounds visit Shanghai and Suzhou, and were able to witness a country that is dynamic and rapidly modernizing, on the one hand and yet steeped in rich culture and tradition on the other.”

“China is going to exert more and more influence on the world in the future. It’s important that our students gain a better sense of the country, its people, traditions, history and perspectives and viceversa. I think the program this summer helped foster that mutual understanding,” he continued.

Two more Global Business Immersion trips abroad are being tentatively planned, according to Bolt.

One group of students will be taken to China again and the other group would go to Japan, which will be Ohlone’s first study abroad trip in that country.

Ohlone students express their worldly styles

Ohlone College represents a world of culture, united in learning. Our curriculum is academically diverse so we intermingle with people with different backgrounds, age groups and professional designations.

Our cultural diversity is obvious in the array of styles reflecting our personalities, preferences and expressions.

You can see meticulously dressed up folks to casual comfortable ones, as well as those in between. Our ratio

of international students also contributes refreshing trends.

I caught Rita Lali, an ESL student from China, in shorts accompanied with leggings, a cardigan and a Gucci bag.

She effortlessly balanced the luxury accessory with the easygoing feminine outfit. She looks to fashion magazines such as Vivi.

Jennifer La and Tiffany Hoang had an edgier, polished look. La wore stretch skinnyfit denim with a boat-neck knit top.

Hoang wore a multicolored stripe top with ankle length skinny-fit pants. Both ladies

sported an eclectic mixture of rings, bracelets and necklaces.

They are inspired by street style and prefer to find treasures from thrift stores to boutiques.

Sitting under the shades of Building 2: Lola Ramos in a John-Paul Gaultier for Target cropped trench coat, David Collins and his signature RayBan sunglasses and Monica Ramos in different shades of denim.

Other students like Amna Naeem and Anum Erooq look to the stylish character Blair from Gossip Girl.

Zachary Kohler, who had a backpack on one shoulder and a guitar case on the other, attributes his similarity to Billy Joel from Greenday.

Ashlynn Danielsen, a Photography/English student who hopes to study fashion, looks to whowhatwear.com for inspirations.

She mixed denim shorts with blue/black leopard print cardigan and a pair of baby blue sunglasses.

Hector Hupp, unaffected by popular trends, wore a striped knit headscarf contrasted by a pair of New People headphones and cropped black

leather gloves from Arizona.

A chemical engineering student, Joseph Schmitz, stayed true to his musical taste by wearing a Rolling Stones shirt and aviator glasses.

It’s not only students that exude style, Learning Disabilities Counselor Terry Taskey wore a black knit wrap with intricate embroidered detail on the back.

From Hip-Hop style sagged pants to hipster skinny pants, from hooded sweaters to cardigans and blazers, from luxury goods to thrift store finds, you can be sure to be exposed to a world of styles, here at Ohlone.

This process continues until a participant calls out bingo. In order to call out bingo, the participant must have one solid line from one end of the card to the other on their card.

The line can be horizontal, vertical or diagonal. If the participant truly has a solid line, a bingo, they win the round.

For many people, bingo is a game that brings back memories from the past, for others a glimpse into the fu-

ture as a senior citizen and for a rare few, a completely new experience.

On Sept. 22, in the cafeteria at Ohlone Fremont, a massive bingo game was held.

Every table was filled with people holding onto their bingo cards, eagerly gazing at it in hopes that the numbers called were their own.

The excitement grew with each number was called.

Some let out cries of glee if the number was on their card,

while others cried in disappointment if the number did not aid their cause.

The prizes were gift cards to places such as Subway, Starbucks and Target.

Renee Gonzales, Campus Activities Coordinator, organized the event and said her inspiration for planning this event was a conversation she had with a student several years ago that pertained to fun things that people on campus could do together.

ASOC, Associated Students of Ohlone College, funded the event, along with all the other student activities that occur on campus.

Gonzales mentioned that her goal for this event was to see it grow in popularity because it has been done several times before in the past.

She also desires to see students having a great time, look forward to future events and just to be aware of fun events held on campus.

“I was experiencing problems with my job along with the passing of a close friend, I had the need to write a piece.

It brings back a lot of memories,” he said.

After the speech, the sound of instruments being finely tuned filled the room as musicians made their last minute preparations for the show.

The orchestra, led by conductor David Sloss, rang in the start of the new season with the star spangled banner, a

47-year old tradition.

Henry Mollicone’s “Final Light”, a more modern piece, was the first performed. The piece began with a burst from the string section, giving the listener a feeling of despair.

During the middle of the piece, the chaos dies down, ending with a calm sound.

Mollicane’s reasoning for the calm resolution was: “The soul begins to experience a glimpse of hope.”

Conductor David Sloss gave a lecture on the life and hardships of Tchaikovsky.

Shortly afterward, Stephen Kim, a local violin virtuoso, was called out onto the stage

to lead in a rendition of Tchaikovsky’s violin concerto.

Kim, only 14 years old, astonished crowds with his amazingly technical and soulful performance. He received a boisterous round of applause after just the first movement.

To follow proper symphony etiquette, one must reserve applause till the end of the piece.

Following his performance, many audience members found it only right to praise him with flowers and give him a standing ovation.

A random member of the audience turned to me and asked if he was human, I

couldn’t help but to ask the same thing.

Beethoven’s Symphony no. 3, Eroica, was the final composition played.

Sloss once again gave a brief history on the composer before beginning and gave examples of Beethoven’s unique style in order for the audience to better appreciate it.

The Fremont Symphony is remarkably polished and refined, putting them on the same caliber as any other Bay Area symphony in terms of quality. Music lovers are highly recommended to attend one of the symphony’s shows.

Bingo is a friendly and fun game based entirely on luck.

In the game, one person picks a ball out of a pile that has the letters B-I-N-G-O, along with a number on it.

For example, B4 is a possible ball that might be called.

When a ball is called, the participant must mark off the correlating box on their bingo card.

Fremont Symphony Orchestra’s season opener “Triumph of the Spirit” premiered on Sept. 25 at Ohlone’s Smith center.

The night opened with a speech by composer, Henry Mollicone, as a prologue to the concert.

Mollicone explained his inspiration behind his composition “Final Light” while defining and demonstrating musical terms such as melody, motif and pentatonic scale.

Two campus elevators went out of service in under a month. The Building 1 elevator went down Aug. 31 while the Building 4 elevator went out Sept. 20.

The Building 1 elevator will not be fixed until Jan. 2011 according to Director of Facilities Lucky Lofton.

Ohlone is currently in the process of finding a contracting firm for the repairs.

It will cost $75,000 to $100,000. It will take between four to six weeks to finish repairs once the contract is signed.

The Building 4 elevator was fixed Sept. 23.

The problem with the Building 4 elevator was reported to Campus Police when Ohlone art instructor Kenney Mench-

er and two Ohlone students found themselves stuck in the elevator between floors two and three.

“As it rose all of a sudden it went Ka-chunk and stopped,” Mencher said.

“The students looked totally freaked out and panicked.

The first thing I thought was, I wanted to make a joke about that movie Devil”.

Mencher continued, “I grew up in New York and I’m used to elevators. I know there are tons of ways to get out of them.

I called the police through the phone and they sent someone over”.

“Manmohan Gil (Buildings and Grounds Supervisor) was outside the doors and said it would take the the elevator maintenance 20 to 30 minutes to get there. I was stuck in this elevator and it was hot. I asked

Mr. Gil if you could open the doors from the outside but he doesn’t know how”.

Mencher went on to state, “Growing up in New York, I know that you can push the doors open from the inside, so I pushed open the doors from inside and I held the doors open and had the students pass their backpacks to another student and then (we all) got out. We were in there for about 15 minutes.”

“Being in that elevator was like being in a coffin. It was as though we were buried alive,” Mencher said.

Building 4’s elevator became inoperable after its hydraulic pump failed. It was then replaced and went back into service on Thursday, Sept. 23. Campus elevators on campus are serviced by ThyssenKrupp Elevators.

According to Lucky Lofton, ThyssenKrupp Elevators services the elevators every three weeks. The elevators are just over 40 years old and fail “periodically,” though there was no indication from routine inspections that the Building 4 elevator was likely to fail.

Mencher added, “I think there is a larger issue with

the failing building infrastructure. Our current president of the college is trying her best to try and fix things. Unlike our previous president who decides to build a new campus as his legacy, I think that our president now, her legacy is going to be fixing things and make sure that we survive fiscally.”

coach Julian Russell knows that the players will give everything they have.

“I want to see them compete. I want to see how bad they want it,” he said.

The team practices against each other every day during various drills and the coaches know the team is excited to show what they can do against other teams. “All of these guys are pretty competitive.

It will be good to see them in real game situations,” said Russell.

The Fall Ball schedule includes some good competition as well.

Four out of the Renegades’ nine games will be played against the College of San Mateo; the team the Renegades beat 16-10 to win the State Championship last season in

dramatic fashion.

“We like to schedule quality teams. It helps bring out the best in the players,” said Russell.

Perhaps the most important thing Russell looks for during Fall Ball is leadership.

The baseball team will be fairly young as a whole, and Russell knows he will need a lot of the returners to play big roles this year.

“With the third-year players, you have guys that have been to the Super Regional and won the State Championship. Their experience will be huge,” he said. “They’ll be able to help show the new guys the way of the land.”

Russell will be looking to third year players such as Cody Demera and Cody Honea to help lead the team, as

well as returning pitcher Matt Fontaine.

All these players know what the coaches expect from them, and they expect it of themselves as well.

“I got to step up,” said Demera when asked about his role on the team. Demera, a utility player, has bounced around between third base, catcher, and first base during his time with the Renegades.

“We can’t get comfortable with what’s already been accomplished,” Fontaine said.

Fontaine, a starting pitcher on the team, added, “The sophomores really stepped up last year, and the older guys will have to step up this year as well. We just have to keep getting a little better every day.”

With October just around the corner, Ohlone’s baseball team is getting to ready to kick off the Fall Ball schedule against the College of San Mateo.

Beginning Oct. 7 and lasting until Nov. 20, the Renegades will play in nine scrimmage games to help the coaches decide upon their final roster.

There are currently about 60 kids working out with the team, but that number will be trimmed to approximately 45 once the Fall Ball season is over.

watching them practice, you can really tell it’s an unselfish, all-about-the-team mentality, and that is something that coaches love to see.

The players can’t wait for Fall Ball to start, and the coaches are just as excited.

One coach who’s excited in particular is new head coach Russell, who takes over ofr Jordon Twohig, who accepted a position at the University fo Washington in early July.

“It’s 105 degrees out there today,” he said with a smile on his face. “Let’s see what these boys are made of.”

October baseball isn’t just for the majors.

Consider it spring training of sorts.

But however you put it, Ohlone baseball is back.

There aren’t many golf tournaments, at least in the junior college circuit, that carry as much significance as the annual Ohlone College Golf Tournament.

The 26th annual Fremont Bank and Ohlone College Golf Tournament hosted almost all of the Ohlone faculty, coaches and a few players at the Wente Vineyards in Livermore on Monday, along with various sponsors.

It also saw former Ohlone President Doug Treadway and current Ohlone President Gari Browning.

“It’s for a great cause,” Browning said. “We have wonderful scholar athletes at Ohlone and very competitive teams.”

The money raised from the tournaments helps pay for the travel costs for the teams, especially when the postseason begins.

The athletics department gets just a certain amount per year from the college.

The majority of that money goes toward travel, but also to repair broken equipment like scoreboards and also pays for hotel accomodations on long road trips.

“It’s for a good cause,” Russell said. “It’s great just kind of mingling with the community, all the people that represent Ohlone College and really help us out. Without support of the surrounding community, Ohlone athletics wouldn’t be here.”

The tournament kicked off shotgun-style, as everyone was put into groups of four and teed off at different holes at the vast golf couse at Wente Vineyards.

There were also various challenges around the course.

A hole-in-one could’ve won someone $10,000, while the secret hole awarded one lucky contestant a free bottle of wine.

Overall, despite the warmer than usual weather, an easy day at the golf course for a good cause. Not a bad Monday.

Men’s soccer rebounds with big Peñaflor, volleyball win over Monterey Peninsula ready for conference The Ohlone Renegades men’s soccer team defeated the Monterey Peninsula College Lobos 4-2 on a sweltering afternoon at Ohlone on Tuesday.

Ohlone entered the match having lost 3-1 against Mission College on Friday.

Ohlone head coach Jan Nordmo was critical of his team’s effort in that game.

“We started acting like we were going to win everything without even walking out and trying,” Nordmo said Tuesday.

“I think we took Mission for granted, and it slapped us. It was a good lesson.”

It was a lesson that appears to have been well learned, as Ohlone came out focused and determined against Monterey.

Despite an intense early attack by the Renegades, Monterey drew first blood.

Scoring off a header by midfielder Charles Seymour, Ohlone opened up with a 1-0 lead midway through the first half.

Ohlone wasted little time in answering, however, riposting

with a stunning long distance shot from the left by sophomore forward George Mayer that ricocheted violently off of the left goal post.

Mayer’s second goal came right before the end of the half, catching the Lobo’s goalkeeper out of position and giving the Renegades a 2-1 lead going into intermission. “[Mayer] was just on top of his game,” Nordmo said of his star forward. “George was just outstanding. I thought he did a phenomenal job.

Monterey struck first again after the break to even the score again at 2-2.

But, Ohlone wasted no time regaining the lead, with sophomore forward Nicholas Sanchez-Torres scoring Ohlone’s third goal just moments after Monterey had retied the game.

About midway through the second period, Ohlone nabbed a fourth goal.

This time by sophomore forward Jarod Fluke to push their lead to what would eventually be the final score, 4-2.

“Jared, I think for me, he was the man of the match,” Nordmo said.

“He didn’t always make the thing happen for us, but he really unbalanced the defense a lot.”

Mayer was the offensive star of the day for the Renegades, a role which he is clearly accustomed to playing for on the Ohlone team.

His two goals and two assists against Monterey bring his season totals to an impressive team high nine goals and four assists.

Mayer credits his success to the squad’s overall effort and coordination.

“I think it was just that everyone was around, everyone gave their best effort, and we were actually playing as a whole the whole time,” Mayer said.

“It was a team effort—it wasn’t just me. Everyone was finding the person, where they need to be.”

With the victory, Ohlone improves to 6-3 overall, and 1-1 in conference play.

The Renegades are currently 5-0 at home on the season.

Their next game is at home on Tuesday, Oct. 5 against Los Positas College.

So, a .500 (5-5) record entering Friday’s conference opener at Foothill isn’t exactly what the Ohlone Volleyball team and Coach Jeremy Peñaflor were hoping for.

The Lady Renegades stumbled a bit last weekend at the San Jose City Tournament, winning just one of the four matches played in the tournament.

Ohlone was swept by Feather River in game one and lost 3-1 to conference rival DeAnza 3-1 in the second game on Friday.

“I told them the way we played on Friday would not be accepted for the rest of the year,” Peñaflor said.

The Lady Renegades responded to their coach’s words in the first game on Saturday as Ohlone capitalized on San Jose City’s mistakes resulting in a tremendous a 3-1 win.

This however was followed with a loss right after to Monterey Peninsula 3-1.

However, given the level they’ve played at thus far,

minus last weekend’s surprising collapse, there’s a greater sign that the Lady Renegades are ready to make a solid run at a possible Coast Conference title.

“I think we’re stronger than we were last year, and have a better brand of volleyball altogether,” Peñaflor said.

That “better brand of volleyball” began with the Lady Renegades starting off the year 3-0 before falling in five sets to Columbia College in the home opener.

They rebounded with a win against Lassen College three days after to begin their five-game road trip.“I think if we’re going to catch anyone off guard, it’ll be at the conference opener,” Peñaflor added.

Ohlone has shown vast improvement in the early goings compared to last season.

Sophomore Jayme Leftridge leads the team with just over three kills a game, Marissa Patubo has racked up more than 10 aces already and Melissa Randall is averaging nearly 2.5 digs per game.

The infamous win-less streak is now a thing of the past.
