COURSE DESCRIPTION
COURSE AIMS & THEMES
A project-based course; it focuses on site analysis (topographic and climatic), treatment of land surfaces and levels, planting, water, lighting outdoor spaces, and external furniture. It emphasizes types of local and regional vegetation and criteria for their choice as well as the development of landscape design in Far Eastern, European and Islamic cultures. Focus is also on client needs and interior/exterior spatial and visual relationships. Projects should include site inventory, research, and analysis; program development; concept alternatives; master planning; and details design using a combination of computer, technical, and freehand presentation techniques.
• Learn the scope of landscape Architecture and what it encompasses. • Develop Landscape architecture terminologies. • Attain the capability to assess outdoor space and carry out design principles that add value to the space. • Review historic precedents that inform landscape design as well as develop a critical analysis of cultural landscapes through the investigation of philosophical, aesthetic and social aspects of landscape architecture and garden art. • Investigate different designed landscapes through observing and analyzing contemporary local, regional and international examples • Investigate the designed landscapes of Jordan. • Gain knowledge of so#scape and hardscape elements employed in Landscape architecture • Learn to implement context/climate sensitive design principles through tackling typical problems of semi-arid landscapes. .
COURSE CONTENT MODULE 01: DEFINING LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE+ This is an introductory module to introduce you to landscape architecture, its scope and cover the misconceptions between Landscape architecture, landscape design, and garden design A simple understanding of why we do design landscapes is offered in this module. + Basic and general concepts of design will be introduced. Elements of design (Line, Form, Texture, Color, scale) Principles of Design (Unity, Balance, Transition, Proportion, Rhythm, Repetition, Simplicity) Water preserving landscapes

COURSE CONTENT MODULE 03: LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE PRINCIPLES
MODULE 04: SITE PLANNING +TERRAIN ANALYSIS
Landscape fabric (Space, Path, Edge, Foci, Thresholds) This section introduces the concept of landscape architecture and will be your guiding tool in learning how landscape fabric is formed in its spatial terms and how you can produce landscape architecture configurations through understanding its principal structural components. Social, aesthetic and environmental aspects will also be drawn attention to while going through each one of the principles.
A study of existing landforms and their terminologies, understanding different cases and shapes of the existing land shapes and the technique to integrate the existing situation with the design concept. Contours are a major factor in understanding the terrain. Site planning will give an understanding of site analysis, assessment, layout and general notes to take into consideration when planning your site.

ME______! THO____ _! DO_____! LOGY___ __!
This course will take on the form of “active learning following the belief that we learn more by actively processing material than by passively receiving information. It will involve site visits, in-class assignments, student-led review sessions, analysis or reactions to videos and team work projects.
It will be supported by PowerPoint presentations that will cover the theory part of the course .It will also include a number of major projects along the course which will help form a comprehensive understanding of landscape architecture as well as formulate your skills in designing landscapes.

MID-TERM EXAM/
GARDEN OF YOUR OWN THEME!
GOAL Output example by Amer Hamdan
OUTPUT
Should be in colored pencils, markers or watercolour. No monotone output allowed! • Site plan 1:50 • Section 1:50 • 3D’s (BONUS)
The aim of this mid-term exam exercise is to design the above outlined garden according to garden design principles. This garden plot is a Tabula Rasa , meaning you have no constraints to your design. The design should include clear selection of a garden form, and should showcase both so#scape and hardscape selection in terms of texture, colour and visual weight. All so#scape utilized should be labelled and drawn proportionally. Different elements and features should be utilized to showcase the activities and themes you want to address.

PROJECT/
INSPIRATION INCUBATOR @ IBRAHIM HASHIM HOUSE
MODEL BY: BOURAHN BANDAK, FARAH KRAISHAN, YASMEEN QASRAWI, SARAH ROKH, CHRISTINE SA’D, SARAH TABIB.
03 PROJECT/ INSPIRATION INCUBATOR @ IBRAHIM HASHIM HOUSE
THIS PROJECT IS AN INTERMEDIATE STEP TOWARDS UNDERSTANDING HOW TO DELIVER LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE. DESIGNING A SMALL-SCALE PROJECT WILL BE A GOOD EXERCISE TO UNDERSTAND THE TOOLS OF HOW TO UTILIZE THE STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS OF LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE AND THUS DELIVERING A FUNCTIONAL DESIGN AS WELL AS EMPHASIZING/CREATING/BRINGING OUT A SENSE OF “PLACE”. The site of your project I will be next to Darat Othman Bdeir on lot No.66. It is situated between two streets on two levels and is bounded from the West by the Darat Othmand Bdeir. The idea is to create a haven for you that will compensate the lacking open space in the Dara, which is an essential part to mentally recharge and vent out. There are no program requirements; it is up to you to design what you wish for in your University outdoor space. Yet you are required to utilize both so#scape and hardscape elements and any other elements you wish that could include (including the mentioned) : Various vegetation, various paths of varying nature, leisure or entertainment area, kiosks, water features, hardscape of different natures, flower beds, shaded areas, garden allotments, seating areas, exhibition area…etc.
Project details/ Inspiration incubator @Ibrahim Hashim House Place introduction/ Site visit
Familiarize yourself with the site and try to understand the underlying forces of the place. Document your initial thoughts.
Phase 01: Site analysis and conceptual design idea Make your visit broader than the boundaries of our site as a way to feel the context in both its tangible and intangible forces. Try to understand the experience of the place through perceiving the surrounding environment. Note your perception of the place as photographs, sketches and personal narratives; it could even be an audio or audio-visual conduct of the place. It is up to you to choose how to perceive the space and document your perception. It would be useful to make a checklist (similar to the one below) to guide you through the analysis:
Designate a SWOT analysis to identify your design procedures and interventions. • What would you like to preserve or restore? In landscape terms as well as culturally? • Which areas are naturally suited for people? For plants? • How can I use resources already on site or readily available in my area? • Will I need to make modifications? Can I make modifications which will enhance the larger eco-system? • What natural energies (wind, water, sun) will need to be blocked, diverted, or redirected? Will these modifications help conserve energies? Can I use those to provide energy or use them aesthetically in the site? • What situations exist for harvesting rainwater? For recycling graywater into earthworks? • Check your human traffic map and identify areas of intense use. • What connections exist to surroundings? And what connections would you envision and how? • Develop a system of connections. Look for multi-use and multifunction opportunities. • What Views are to be blocked? Enhanced? Connected towards?
Phase 02: Schematic design Idea
This phase should be a development of the previous phase and should include the following: • Site Plan including zoning, circulation diagram, spaces and their uses, materials, plants, treatments for negative and unappealing views. scale 1:200 • Site Plan including landscape element used such as so$ and hard spaces and materials etc… scale 1: 200 • 1 Schematic Section scale 1:200 • 1 Schematic Elevations scale 1:200
Phase 03: Pre-‐Final
Developing the previous phase including all the men5oned design elements. • Site Plan scale 1:100 • Sec5on scale 1:100 • Eleva5on scale 1:100
Phase 04 : Final Design submi6al
• Site analysis. (Tangible (including the shade and shadow study) and intangible forces which includes the behavioral survey you did) • Synthesis of all informa5on in diagrams. • Masterplan. 1:100. with clear Vision and Title.Fully illustrated. Please refer to our examples in lectures. This will be the level of graphics required. SHOULD SHOW CONTEXT (Rela5on to Othman Bdeir, nearby forces such as streets and Balad theatre) • Hardscape plan. 1:200. With all materials illustrated in different hatch styles and listed • SoCscape plan. 1:200. With all plant materials illustrated in different graphic styles and proper scale. • Plant schedule. • ElevaFons 1:100 (2). • SecFons 1:100 (2). Showing all levels and different plan5ng themes. SHOULD SHOW HIERARCHIES of both levels and interfaces between soUscape materials. Please refer to our lecture slides for plant interrela5ons. The plant materials should showcase the spa5al quali5es they offer. The sec5ons will showcase if you have chosen the proper plant material for the spa5al theme you designed on the site plan. This works hands in hand! High canopy tree-‐àex. seats underneath. PLEASE ENGAGE PEOPLE IN YOUR GRAPHICS! • Model 1:100 (Please refer to the inspira5on folder I uploaded on the drive for what quality is expected and how) • 3D shots. Minimum of 3.
