Ten Reasons to Vote for Hillary Clinton Economy Clinton seeks to instill a tax renovation, improving the lives of America’s middle and lower-class citizens by shutting down corporate and high-class corruption. It is time that we live up to the democratic government we are labeled to be and bring power back to the people. Immigration Within her first 100 days in office, Clinton plans to begin her immigration reform. Here, she proposed the DREAM Act, ensuring that all immigrant children shall be granted “legal status” if they are to demonstrate good citizenship. Her objective is to keep families together and not let government feuds tear family ties. Foreign Policy Facing evil and assessing this country’s rivals has become

Clinton’s priorities regarding Foreign Policy. By allying with various nations, the strength and diversity that have built this country will be able to flourish along with its people. Supreme Court Selection The job of the Supreme Court Justice requires a levelheaded person who is capable of bringing a fresh face to the panel and is able cultivate our natural-born rights. Among her selection of justices, this is something Clinton is able to provide . Second Amendment Rights Given the advancements in society and technology, the right to bear arms has become outdated and is one of the few reasons Clinton seeks to make quality-of-life changes to this right. Abortion Clinton is a strong advo-

cate for women’s rights and supports the choice a woman makes involving abortion. Outlawing abortion, may give rise to potential problems and hazards such as malpractice or illegal procedures. Religion Freedom Hillary Clinton expresses a great deal of support towards the Equality Act, enforcing Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer rights and combating certain religious ideals. Through this, she will bring an end to religious-driven discrimination. Health Care Clinton currently believes that healthcare is at an alltime high, seeking to make major cuts in its cost, making it accessible regardless of one’s financial situation, and ensuring that all Americans are able to receive the right

to medical assistance Trump’s Negatives There is no debate over Trump’s lack of political correctness and professionalism. Donald Trump is the man that spits on the name of our sisters, mothers, and daughters through his misogynistic ideals and defaces the entirety of our minority population. He is a character and an entertainer with no credentials to serve this country for the better. Hillary’s Positives Clinton holds a variety of qualifying attributes given her credibility and experience as an icon throughout political history, something that Trump fails to compare. If Trump seeks to “Make America Great Again,” then Clinton has the potential to make America the greatest.

Ten Reasons to Vote for Donald Trump

Economy As the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported, the labor participation rate is 68%, meaning that almost 3/10ths of Americans aren’t working. This is the lowest rate since 1978. Trump would rework trade agreements to our advantage, bring companies back to U.S. shores, and put America back to work. Immigration While Trump does not hate illegals, he realizes they pose a threat to the nation’s stability. U.S. Border Patrol Officers’ power has been diminished greatly. If Americans understood the facts, they would understand that numbers are incapable of racism. Foreign Policy To put Trump’s proposals bluntly, he supports any ac-

tion that is thought to be in the best interest of the country. We should be neither the policemen of the world, nor should we be isolationists. Supreme Court Selection Justice Scalia was a good man, who defended the Constitution well. His memory deserves to be honored by someone who would continue the fight for Constitutionalism, rather than special interests or radical agendas. Second Amendment Rights All humans have the right to bear arms -- this is best exemplified in America. Strict laws controlling guns seem to only worsen the problem of gun violence, as the city of Chicago has shown. The Chicago Tribune has reported a 100% increase in gun violence over the last year.

Living in Chicago without a gun for self-defense seems to pose a greater risk. Abortion Planned Parenthood is currently using taxpayer money for abortions, which would be illegal under a law which is currently moving through Congress. It is also allegedly making profits among other acts constituting misconduct on the part of clinic employees. Trump supports defunding Planned Parenthood. Religious Freedom The First Amendment acknowledges the right to enjoy religious liberties, which cannot be given by any man, nor group of men, nor government. Health Care Trump believes Obamacare has failed, not just fiscally, but in principle as well. Its

claim is that everyone has a right to health insurance, which is unconstitutional. He would replace it. Hillary’s Negatives Hillary Clinton has committed crimes. For example, U.S. Code 1924 prohibits the unauthorized removal of classified documents. The volumes of her “I am above the law” indiscretions give Americans a candidate that is unfit for the job. Trump’s Positives Trump will succeed fiscally, as demonstrated by his great business success. He has displayed the ability to make deals with a broad array of people. As President, Trump would bring a respite from the ideologically-driven career politicians who currently control Washington.

He also added “lack of sleep ages the skin, is hard on the heart and can lead to weight gain.” Not only does sleep affect the outcome of a student’s day, but an improper diet can take a negative toll on them as they are more susceptible to being cranky and lethargic. Veteran Benefits

By Sarah Anaya Business Editor

In the United States of America, serving in the military has become an optimal career choice for both men and women. Some serve for a few years while others dedicate their lives defending their country. Depending on the time spent in the military, veterans can receive certain benefits. The individual must have “served on active duty in the U.S Army, Navy, Air Force or Marine Corps for a period of 20 years or more” to be considered a retired veteran, according to the Defense Finance and Accounting Service. For their act of service, these veterans qualify for military pension and retirement homes. If one has served 20 years and is disabled they are eligible for military shopping and travel benefits. the individual served in the military. According to the article How to Qualify for Veteran Benefits, “Each time Congress passes a new veterans benefits law, it establishes specific eligibility criteria for that benefit.” The process of receiving these benefits is not always easy, but there are certain organizations that are dedicated to helping veterans. One known as The Disable American Veterans Chapter 99, located in Oxnard, “Advocates for veterans who have gotten out of the service and then have troubles with the Veterans Affairs (VA) with getting their benefits,” said captain of the organization Paul Giberson. What if a teacher was the mayor of Oxnard?

A mayor’s responsibility is to preside at city council meetings, act as a head of the city for certain ceremonies, and overall just be there for the community. A mayor must cultivate the well-being of the people and minimize economic or political issues. These individuals play an important role in the community’s deci-

sions, which is why this position is not something to play around with. When electing a mayor, it is important to have the people’s opinion. The Oxnard High School newspaper The Buzz, surveyed students to see which teacher they would choose to be the mayor of Oxnard in a given selection of

teachers. In a twitter poll taken by The Buzz, Mr. Patrick Casey came in first place for being the mayor of Oxnard. Another Twitter poll done by The Buzz had a different outcome, resulting in Mr. Robert Borneman coming in first place. Mr. Casey’s percentage was 57% and Mr. Borneman was 60%.

Application Season

As college application due dates draw closer, many Oxnard High School seniors are putting their best efforts into balancing schoolwork, applications, and other commitments. OHS senior Nina Lansangan, said she finds it “Extremely difficult to balance all [her] homework and the college process.” Many seniors are finding themselves in the same boat as Lansangan. Making time in their tight schedules has proven to be quite a challenge, and with deadlines for UC and CSU applications less than a month away, they are feeling the pressure. Not to mention, the majority of students have after-school commitments such as sports, work, and volunteering. Squeezing time in for applications hasn’t been an easy feat. OHS senior

Destiny Perez, said that “At times it can be overwhelming because of homework and cheer.” AVID (Advancement Via Independent Determination) seniors are reaping the benefits of the program now more than ever. They receive help in class with everything from filling out the FAFSA application, to revising their personal statements. There are college tutors available in class and at lunch to answer any questions students might have regarding college. They are a very valuable resource for students because they have first-hand experience and advice. Perez said she has “received a lot of help from the tutors” and “felt the support of AVID throughout the entire college process.” An advantage that all OHS seniors have is the

amount of resources provided to help with the entire college process. Ms. Baylor is available in the College and Career Center to discuss which colleges might be a good fit for each student, and the path they should take to get there. OHS Alumni Melgret Valdez, said “Teachers are always willing to help and even other students who are going through the same

thing.” Another resource available to all students is the after-school Homework Center. Teachers and student tutors are always willing to help with any questions students may have. Although application season may be quite a stressful time, it will ultimately benefit students’ future.

Prop 55

By Ilse Ramirez Reporter

Proposition 55 is a modified continuation of proposition 30. Originally, proposition 30 was meant to get California ‘out of the gutters’ and push forth educational reform. But now the presidential term is coming to an end, the great improvements and betterness throughout schools will end as well. This will cause long term effects that will be easier to fix now rather than later. Currently, the push for proposition 55 is intensifying and worrying those who it will affect, including students parents and educators. Not only will it be taking place of the old proposition, but it will also have the some moderations. One of these moderations will be to set aside money to contribute to the state’s public schools. This will create fewer budget cuts and more opportunities for the well-being of the students. It will also contribute to the safety of the students by providing sta-

bility in health care and protection for low-income families. According to The Los Angeles Times, over the past four years, these same people have provided up to 63% of the state’s funds. In order to meet these moderations, there would have to be a raise in taxes on California’s richest 2 percent. Proposition 55 will also be voted in as a 12 year term. Hoping it will bring in four to nine million dollars a year, many of the voters were told that this would be a temporary action, which is why they voted for Prop 30. However, by making Proposition 55 active through a course of twelve years, many voters oppose. A common stance taken by many of those who oppose the proposition is that it negatively affects small business owners and attacks the wealthy. According to voterguide.sos. ca.gov “It takes too much money from the people who have worked hard to

earn it.” Although it may have had minor setbacks, proposition 30 ultimately helped small, struggling communities better their educational system as a whole. Prop 55 has the potential to continue the success of prop 30.

8 DAYS TO GO Feel Our Bern!

Bernie Sanders still wants the best for America

By: April Perez Reporter Bernie Sanders ran for the Democratic Party as a candidate in the primary elections. After the votes came in earlier this year, many young voters were disappointed. These voters had to see their preferred Democratic candidate lose. Oxnard High School junior Mayela Solorio feels “really bad because [Sanders] just wanted to help us yet, everyone wanted to vote for the familiarity of Clinton.”

Solorio believes in Sanders’ propositions to solve the country’s issues. Some of those issues were racial justice, combating climate change, making debt and college tuition free, etc. according to Bernie Sanders’ website. University of California, Davis freshman Stephanie Quero believes Bernie Sanders “didn’t get his fair share of media attention due to Trump and Clinton’s power and money.”

On the contrary, Sanders had more of the younger generations vote for him than Trump and Clinton did combined according to The Washington Post. OHS junior Jenelle Vera said, “if the younger generation [voted] more, they [could have gotten] the change because everyone liked Bernie, but they would not go out and vote.” Vera and Quero believe young voters should use their vote to get a

great presidential candidate in the Democratic Party. Young supporters, such as OHS junior Abigail Sanabria, are passionate about Sanders because of his impact on women’s rights, and how he’s working on college tuition prices. Despite losing primaries, Sanders continues to stay positive. He along with his support system continue to strive in politics. Drawing by: Cindy Tran

Tuesday, November 8, is a significant day that is soon approaching. On this day Americans cast their vote for President and any federal Congressional seats that are running. Although most Oxnard High School students are not eligible to vote, it is always useful to know for the future. - If you vote in person, polling locations are assigned by residential address and can be found online. - The state of California does not require citizens to have a document to vote. However, first time voters who did not register in person are required by federal law to show some form of identification. - People who are over the age of 18 or who will be 18 on Election Day can register to vote at local election offices, the DMV, armed services recruitment centers, or online. - The deadline to register to vote in the state of California was October 24.

Prior to Election Day, you will be able to see a sample ballot that shows you all of the federal, state, and local races you may see on the real ballot. Some non-profit organizations make unofficial sample ballots based on locality that can be found at www.ballotpedia. org. Tips: - Do not just vote for the person who is in the same party as you. - Research the candidates before voting. Make sure they have the same views as you.

THE day the dead COME Alive Common misconception on a widely celebrated Latin American holiday

By: Maria Almaraz Reporter

“Día de los Muertos honors the dead with festivals and lively celebrations, a typically Latin American custom that combines indigenous Aztec rituals with Catholicism, brought to the region by Spanish conquistadores,” according to nationalgeographic.org. Both holidays, Día de los Muertos and Día de los Inocentes, are very well-known around Latin America. Día de los Inocentes is

eating the bread, and the sugar skulls,” said Oxnard High School junior Emily Hernandez. Traditions done at home are just as important as the big celebrations. Along with well-known traditions and celebrations comes misconceptions. “A lot of people confuse Día de los Muertos for Halloween, they are completely two different things,” said OHS Spanish teacher Mr. Erick Garcia. Not only are they celebrated on different days but they fulfill different purposes because according to diffen.com “[Día de los Muertos] remembers and celebrates friends and family that are dead” and “Halloween is an appreciation of the afterlife and the survival after death.” Another common misconception is that Día de los Muertos is about evil. People might think that since death is being praised that there are bad things that happen. “Glorifying death might seem a tad morbid to those not familiar

with the holiday, but Day of the Dead brings the advent of death to light, making the concept of “the end” less scary,” stated by abcnews. go.com.
