TO SING A TROUBLED SONG – MUSIC AND CONFLICT IN NORTHERN IRELAND BY STUART BAILIE OH YEAH MUSIC CENTRE, 3PM, FREE. – ‘To Sing A Troubled Song’ tells the story of how musicians from NI and further afield responded to thirty years of conflict. Van Morrison, John Lennon and Paul McCartney put it in song. So did Paul Brady, Christy Moore and Bono. The story covers significant events such as the Miami Showband massacres, the riotous Clash visit on 1977, the Clinton reception outside the City Hall in November 1995 and the ‘Yes’ concert at the Waterfront with U2 and Ash in 1998. Stuart Bailie has worked as a music journalist for 30 years. This lecture was originally delivered at the Curb Centre, Vanderbilt University in September 2014, in association with the Institute Of Collaborative Research In the Humanities, Queen’s University Belfast.

Following on from the first successful event in July, Back Track aims to revisit that intense atmosphere once found at legendary venues like Wigan’s Casino club and Manchester’s Twisted Wheel. Expect a potent brew of uptempo classics delivered by some of Belfast and Dublin’s finest soul DJs, all spinning on original 45 singles.

Mireia Bordonada was born in Barcelona in 1979. She studied Photography at the IEFC – Instituto de Estudios Fotográficos de Cataluña. “Ulster Punk: Rebels With A Cause is the story of Northern Irish youngsters from the late Seventies, who lived the armed conflict between communities since their childhood. These guys used punk music as a megaphone to denounce the prevailing situation in the country and as a shelter from street clashes and political sectarianism. Punk was the first movement since the conflict began, in which young people from both communities joined together without prejudice. Through a thread based on a music scene, you are going to see the ‘Old Glories’ of the Northern Ireland punk.” – MIREIABORDONADA.COM

NOVEMBER 10 & 11 NOVEMBER 10 — CREATIVE CHOICES OH YEAH MUSIC CENTRE, 10AM – 1PM (REGISTRATION REQUIRED) – Creative Choices events allow students aged 13 – 16 to participate in workshops with industry experts, in industry venues. Oh Yeah is hosting a Creative Choices event on 10 November focusing on careers in music. School students will have the chance to learn about job roles such as making music videos, stage management, recording, marketing and event management. Schools must book onto this event in advance. NOVEMBER 11 — RECORD LABEL OH YEAH MUSIC CENTRE, 10AM – 3PM (PUBLIC ADMISSION AT 1.30PM) – Teams from Belfast Met and North West Regional College battle it out to manage R51, one of the emerging bands from Oh Yeah’s talent development programme, Scratch My Progress. Throughout the day, teams from both colleges will work with industry professionals to outline a two year plan for the group, acting as a mini Record label. Teams will work with an industry mentor and have the opportunity to question industry professionals in order to create a plan which considers Press, Social Media, Tour Management, Visual Marketing and Finance. This live brief will expose students to the real challenges faced by those working in the music business and give them the unique opportunity to question and work with those already working in the music sector. Come and see the results as they pitch their ideas to R51 and Oh Yeah representatives at 1.30pm.

THE DEFECTS GETTING TO KNOW… THE DEFECTS
– OH YEAH MUSIC CENTRE, 8PM, FREE – FOLLOWED BY A SCREENING OF MADE IN BELFAST The past two years have witnessed an impressive resurgence for The Defects. They have played a series of European dates, have released an album, featured prominently at the Rebellion Festival and toured Australia. All this and their punk credentials remain sharp. Getting To Know… is a regular Oh Yeah event. It features a chosen band in conversation and in live performance. It encourages the songwriters to explain how their music has taken shape while the audience is welcome to provide constructive feedback. This is followed by a screening of the film Made In Belfast, a documentary by Buttz Yoddles, showing The Defects at large in town and onstage at the Ulster Hall.

SCRATCH MY PROGRESS EP LAUNCH — HOT COPS, HURDLES, MATTHEW DULY, SEROTONIN, R51 – OH YEAH MUSIC CENTRE, 8pm, £5 – Scratch My Progress is Oh Yeah’s annual talent development programme. Five acts have availed of recording studio time, a professional photo shoot, one-to-one meetings with industry professionals and more. November 12 is another milestone: the launch of the third Scratch CD, showcasing the excellent music of Hot Cops, Hurdles, Matthew Duly, Serotonin and R51. We think the music is amazing and we believe that these artists will follow in the illustrious paths of previous Scratch graduates such as Go Wolf and Katharine Philippa.

Aimed at artists aged between 14 and 24 who want a career in music, The Big Music Project will be scouting talented musicians and performers across all genres.

Now an annual event, this is one day indoor festival of urban, pop, and hip hop music. It includes workshops and performances throughout the day. It is specifically aimed at disadvantaged young people, in particular those not in education or training. The idea is to bring young people who wouldn’t normally have access to or participate in cultural or music activities, closer to the local industry and get them involved in everything from Club DJing to Radio presenting, rap, vocal coaching, recording and instruments, to music photography, graffiti art and more.
Priority of place goes to youth and community organisations. The event will close with rising Irish stars of acoustic hip hop, The Original Rudeboys who have supported The Script and Cheryl Cole. The day will also include a Q&A with The Voice UK winner Andrea Begley, Conor Scott, and YouTube sensation BriBry. This year’s event is supported by Children In Need, and included an outreach project in the lead up to the festival with our key partners Start360 and Include Youth.
