About Devon Point Farm: Devon Point Farm has a 100-member organic vegetable and flower share "CSA" share program, CSA stand for "Community Supported Agriculture" – a simple idea in which a CSA member buys a "share" of a farmer’s harvest at the beginning of growing season and then come to the farm on a weekly basis to pick it up. We also have a herd of rare heritage breed North Devon Cattle, which are sold for breeding stock and grassfed beef. The entire farm is farmed organically and we also raise heritage breed chickens for eggs and meat. Visit our website at: www.devonpointfarm.com to learn more about our farm. NEW ENGLAND CLIMATE SUMMER NEWENGLANDCLIMATESUMMER.ORG

NEW ENGLAND CLIMATE SUMMER INTERN Internship Description: New England Climate Summer is a transformative two month (June 8- August 9) internship that challenges participants to learn and practice effective community organizing skills while building a powerful movement to solve the climate crisis. Climate Summer participants put their values into action, bringing the moral authority of the generation who will face the most severe effects of climate change to bear across New England, knitting together the strands of a movement able to put our nation on the path to a just and stable future. Training: Climate Summer begins with a full week of intensive training. Interns will learn the nuts and bolts for a successful summer and community organizing skills from climate movement leaders. The Climate Summer organizing model emphasizes building relationships with diverse constituencies, training for leadership development, campaign structure and developing public narratives that motivate for action. The training will also include basics like working with media, running effective team meetings and of course, bike safety and maintenance. Responsibilities: Participants work in groups of six with a trained team leader, biking from town to town across one of the New England states. Each team visits nearly 10 towns, spending close to a week in each location. Interns commit to travel exclusively by bike, transporting their own gear. Past experience traveling long distances by bike is NOT necessary. Climate Summer teams form an intensive community, living and working together sustainably. Teams are housed by community partners, primarily in houses of worship. Teams cook and clean for themselves. No two weeks of Climate Summer are exactly alike, just as no two communities are exactly alike. Once a team bikes into town for the week, riders might spend their time meeting with a diverse group of community members, attending public functions such as Farmers’ Markets, co-sponsoring events and workshops with local environmental groups, and inventorying what climate-related work is happening in each town. Riders work with communities to connect the diverse constituencies within the emerging grassroots climate movement, as well as support and enhance the local solutions already underway in those communities. Often, teams engage in direct service, skill sharing, and/or raising the profile of existing local solutions and policy advocacy projects through earned media, social networking, and public events. OCEANS RESEARCH WWW.OCEANS-RESEARCH.COM

MARINE RESEARCH INTERNSHIP Internship Description: Interns will be joining dedicated scientists who are conducting accredited research projects in some of the world’s most challenging, beautiful and remote environments. The projects demand significant scientific and practical responsibilities from participants, however, the demands are well within the capabilities of most students, and whilst being challenging, are enjoyable and exciting. As part of this program, interns can expect to be important members of a focused and dedicated research institute and partake in ground breaking research. It is an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to exciting marine research, as well as experience the frustrations, the highs and the lows, and the achievements associated with ambitious and challenging marine research in Africa. Oceans Research has established a strategic network of four research stations situated within the unique marine biomes of southern Africa, namely, Skeleton Coast Marine Lab, Mossel Bay Marine Lab, Aliwal Shoal Marine Lab and Zavora Marine Lab. At each laboratory, researchers are conducting ambitious ecological, physiological and biological studies on resident marine top predators and their associated ecosystems. Mossel Bay Marine Lab is the flagship and most established research laboratory within the Oceans Research network. It is also home to the institute’s central office and management. The research laboratory is situated along the southern coast of Africa in a warm temperate marine biome that attracts numerous temperate water fish species. At the top of the food chain is the Cape fur seal that resides on Seal Island, the Great white shark that frequents the bay to hunt fur seals, numerous fish species and a semi resident population of bottlenose dolphins. Aliwal Shoal Marine Lab is situated in the Umkomaas area, close to Durban, South Africa. Founded in 2010, the facility is proving incredible access for visiting scientists, graduate students and interns due to the unique SCUBA diving research opportunities with marine predators such as tiger sharks and black tip sharks. The marine environment is sub-tropical, with the continental shelf being home to a diversity of reef fish, pelagic species and the larger marine predators. The Laboratory's primary research projects are on the photo identification of tiger sharks and black tip sharks to establish baseline information about residency patterns, site fidelity and abundance. It has also established a long term reef monitoring program aimed at documenting the health of the coral communities. Skeleton Coast Marine Lab is situated along the desert coast of Namibia at Walvis Bay, a worldwide mecca of dolphin watching and desert tourism. The Benguela current is the driving force behind one of the world’s most abundant marine environments and attracts dense populations of marine mammals such as the Heaviside’s dolphin, bottlenose dolphin, Cape fur seal and humpback whale. The Namibian coast line is considered one of the most undeveloped, beautiful places in the world. The Namib is the oldest desert in the world and is characterised by the conjunction of large fields of sand dunes meeting one of the world’s richest marine environments, the cold currents of the Benguela ecosystem. Zavora Marine Laboratory is the smallest and most remote of Oceans Research Marine laboratory network. Located in Mozambique, the laboratory is perfect for adventurous scientists and interns who want to experience Africa in its truest sense. The research laboratory is currently focussed on diver impact on Manta Ray cleaning stations and pristine reefs, and in particular, establishing methods of best practise to ensure that diving tourism isn't detrimental to marine life. Qualifications: The internship program is aimed at assisting in the development of students, training them in the area of biological sciences. Eligibility is thus limited to (a) Current undergraduate students enrolled in academic institutes and studying towards a science major, (b) Graduate scientists with a minimum of a B.Sc. (or equivalent) with a scientific major, (c) Exceptional naturalists who can show a ‘real worlddedica^on to research, management or conserva^on of animals or ecosystems. CEDAR CREEK ECOSYSTEM SCIENCE RESERVE HTTP://WWW.CEDARCREEK.UMN.EDU/

SUMMER FIELD RESEARCH INTERNSHIP Internship Description: The Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve of the University of Minnesota has opportunities for students to work as Research Interns in three types of positions; 1) Plant community ecology, 2) Wildlife biology, and 3) Insect diversity. Most positions run from June through August, but some interns are needed as early as March and some are needed through December. If you are an undergraduate or a newly graduated student with a background or interest in biology, ecology, environmental science, botany, environmental education, wildlife biology, or a related field we encourage you to apply. 1) Plant Community Ecology: We have two large scale projects, along with several smaller scale experiments, that require most of our intern resources throughout the summer. BioCON is one large scale experiment where we explore the ways in which plant communities respond to environmental changes such as increased nitrogen deposition, increased atmospheric CO2, decreased biodiversity, and altered precipitation patterns. Another large scale project is the Big Biodiversity experiment that studies how plant diversity affects the rates, dynamics, and stability of ecological processes at the population, community, and ecosystem levels. There are multiple experiments nested within the Big Biodiversity experiment as well, looking at factors such as irrigation and increased temperatures. 2) Wildlife Biology: The starting date will be early April to mid-May. The research will be looking at how harvesting restored prairies for biofuel affects wildlife. The work will include wildlife surveys encompassing birds, small mammals, insects, reptiles, and amphibians. Bird survey duties will include identifying birds by sight and sound. Small mammal survey duties include operating Sherman live traps and species identification. Insect survey duties will include methods such as sweep netting and pitfall traps. Additional surveys will require plant identification skills. The applicant must have a flexible schedule and be willing to work odd hours including weekends and holidays. The position will entail extensive travel throughout the western Minnesota prairie region and requires a valid driver's license. 3) Insect Diversity: This is part of a study of the tallgrass prairies of Minnesota that looks at how harvesting restored prairies for biofuel affects wildlife. The goal of this internship is to sort insect samples collected from different harvest treatments to reveal effects on diversity and abundance. Sweep net, pitfall, and quantitative samples were frozen after collection and now insects need to be separated from vegetation and identified. This work requires a lot of time in front of a microscope and the ability to handle small objects. If you have good attention to detail and an interest in insects, you may find seeing the diversity, strange morphology, and rare orders that we encounter to be fun a fun and rewarding experience. Qualifications: You will be considered for this internship if (a) you are a US citizen or (b) a foreign citizen attending a US college or university full-time. • Hours Per Week: 40 • Wage/ Salary: $10/hr Application Instructions: To apply, please email (ccintern@umn.edu) the following materials in one email by March 1st, 2011: **Letters of recommendation should be sent separately** (1) A completed application form (may be downloaded from the CCESR website) (2) A resume (maximum of two pages) (3) A cover letter stating both your qualifications and why this internship will benefit you (4) A transcript (unofficial is acceptable) (5) Two letters of recommendation (Should be sent separately **) ** The letters should be emailed in by your references. (or equivalent) with a scientific major, (c) Exceptional naturalists who can show a real world dedication to research, management or conservation of animals or ecosystems. • Hours Per Week: • Wage/ Salary: Unpaid Application Instructions: Further information is available on the Oceans Research website (http://www.oceansresearch.com) or by writing to internship@oceans-research.com 90A Montagu street Mossel Bay, Oceans Research 6500 +2744 690 5799 • internship@oceans-research.com

Internship Credit and Funding. Climate Summer is an unpaid internship opportunity. Housing and food are provided for the duration of the internship. We will work with students on an individual basis to arrange for internship credit at your school. WATCH HILL FARMS WWW.WATCHHILLFARMS.ORG

HISTORICAL RESEARCHER Internship Description: We are interested in working with a URI history student to document the history of the property on which our farm sits. This is part of an overall goal of preserving the history and identity of this agricultural property. This might be a wonderful opportunity for a student to get a few independent research credits or complete thesis or research seminar requirements. The Watch Hill Farm property has special historical significance because it was the first property settled by Europeans in Westerly. John and Mary Babcock arrived here after having eloped by canoe from Portsmouth. John was white and Mary is said to have been of the Micmac tribe. They followed the coast until the came to freshwater (the Pawcatuck River) and then followed the river until they came to the first brook they found (the Mastuxet); this is where they set up camp, spending their first winter with the local Niantic tribe. The Babcock family owned the property until 1927, at which point Marsha's family moved in. The two houses on the property date from the 1700's, but have undergone numerous renovations and expansions. The main house has been a farmhouse, resort, hospital, and now, a private residence. It is absolutely loaded with history. Lamentably, the history of this property has never been written up or celebrated. The role of the student would be to fill in the gaps in what we already know about our property's history, and to make findings available to the community. Duties would involve oral history research, including making contacts with descendents of the Babcock family that we know of throughout the Eastern US. It would also involve archival research in the Westerly town library would turn up some new information. We would also like the student to write up findings in a public form so that it can be known and valued. This would include publicizing the findings in a forum such as the Westerly Sun daily.
