ENVIRONMENT RHODE ISLAND WWW.ENVIRONMENTRHODEISLAND.ORG
ENVIRONMENTAL ORGANIZING INTERN Internship Description: (Note: Please apply with an email directly to us. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, but prospective spring interns are encouraged to apply by December 1.) *Internships with Environment Rhode Island* If you want to spend the semester or summer learning how to make a real impact on the decisions that affect the energy we use, the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the places we love, apply for an internship with Environment Rhode Island. The need to confront our environmental challenges has never been clearer. Take our nation’s reliance on oil to power our cars and trucks, which not only fuels global warming but endangers our health, our environment, our economy, and our national security. We know we need to kick our addition to petroleum, and we have the technology to make automobiles that go much farther on a gallon of gas––or better yet, that don't use any gas at all––but the auto and petroleum industries and their allies in Congress are standing in the way of change. Special interests have deep pockets and incredible influence, and they'll stop at little to maintain business as usual. That's where Environment Rhode Island comes in. Our mission is to research and advocate the policies and build and mobilize the public support necessary to win positive change for the environment––regionally, such as through our campaign to cut power plant emissions, and locally, like with our work to protect Narragansett Bay from plastic pollution. *Internship description* Each semester and during the summer, Environment Rhode Island runs an internship program that gives students the opportunity to learn how to make a real impact on critical environmental issues. Working alongside experienced staff, interns organize citizens and local organizations to build public pressure, research and analyze environmental problems and legislation, generate media buzz through press releases and letters to the editor, and attend meetings with coalition partners and lawmakers. Prospective interns should select a focus listed below. Focus: Global Warming Internship (8-12 hrs/wk): Environment Rhode Island is working at the state and federal levels to promote clean energy solutions that will cut global warming pollution while protecting public health and growing our green economy. In this internship, you will work to build support for policies that cut emissions and promote clean energy, and broadly to ensure that politicians are pushing for policies that do what science says is necessary to prevent the worst effects of global warming. Focus: Preservation Internship (8-12 hrs/wk): Plastic pollution threatens Narragansett Bay and the global marine environment. In Rhode Island, we have the opportunity to take an important step to protect our waterways and lead the way for other states by banning one of the most common sources of marine debris: disposable plastic shopping bags. In this internship, you will do primarily grassroots organizing to put public pressure on our elected officials to move forward on this issue, locally and on a state level.
Focus: Clean Water Internship (8-12 hrs/wk): Polluter-friendly court decisions have left Clean Water Act protections for smaller streams and wetlands in legal limbo. In Rhode Island, these waterways filter and feed Narragansett Bay and drinking water sources like the Scituate Reservoir. In this internship, you will build support for restoring the Clean Water Act in addition to working on other water issues, like stormwater and runoff. Focus: Field Internship (4-8 hrs/wk): Environment Rhode Island is also seeking "field interns" with a focus on carrying out grassroots tactics on our environmental campaigns. Interns will work in teams to gather petitions in neighborhoods and public places, to engage our members and activists over the phone, to build coalitions, and to generate media buzz around our issues. *Beyond the internship* Environment Rhode Island is one of twenty-nine state groups that make up Environment America, a national environmental advocacy group. An internship with Environment Rhode Island also gives you the training and the experience you need to land a job in the environmental movement after graduation. As part of the Environment America network, we annually hire passionate, talented, and committed recent college graduates to join our two year Fellowship Program. Qualifications: We are looking for current college students who care about our environment and are driven to preserve it for the future. We look for strong leadership skills, academic excellence, problem solving ability, top-notch written and verbal skills, eagerness to learn, and a sense of humor. We have a great training program, so prior organizing experience isn't necessary, although if you have some that’s great. • Hours Per Week: 12-Apr • Wage/ Salary: unpaid Application Instructions: To apply or learn more, send a resume and introductory email to: Channing Jones Campaign Director cjones@environmentrhodeisland.org 401-421-6535 http://www.environmentrhodeisland.org Environment Rhode Island is hiring interns to work in our Providence office. 9 South Angell Street Providence, RI 401-421-6535 • cjones@environmentrhodeisland.org To view this posting on RhodyNet visit http:career.uri.edu & click “Students” in RhodyNet Icon Search with the Job Reference Number: 10290 Please note: If you search this position on RhodyNet and you are unable to find it, the position may have been filled or the posting has expired.
