What is the EALTS? The English for Aviation Language Testing System (EALTS) is a multi-level testing system designed to assess the English language proficiency of air traffic controllers, commercial flight crew and pilots across all levels of the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s (ICAO) Language Proficiency Rating Scale; from Pre-Elementary Level 1 to Expert Level 6. The EALTS assesses the English language skills of speaking and listening in the context of aviation and

aeronautical communications. Both components offer comprehensive assessments of your ability to communicate allowing organisations to determine the extent to which their employees can meet the ICAO Language Proficiency Standards. Since its development in 2006, the EALTS has been recognised and accepted by over 100 ICAO Member States for benchmarking and licence endorsement purposes.

How is the test structured? The EALTS is comprised of the EALT Test of Listening and the EALT Test of Speaking. The two parts of the examination do not have to be completed on the same day or in any fixed order. However, you should complete both parts of the test within seven days of each other. Your test schedule is organised directly with Oxford International at our recognised EALTS Test Centre in Greenwich, London. You can also find an alternative EALTS test centre closer to you (see www.ealts.com for more information).

The EALT Test of Listening is a computer controlled, voice-only examination which assesses your ability to listen and understand what is being said, taking approximately 40 minutes to complete. The EALT Test of Speaking is an interview-style speaking proficiency examination conducted directly with an examiner. The examination consists of both face-to-face and voice-only communications and is expected to be completed in 20 minutes.
