Essential Oils 101 Lovingly harvested from farm-grown and wild crafted plants, herbs, and trees, essential oils are concentrated plant extracts obtained by careful steam distillation, cold pressing, or resin tapping. These pure essential oils are far more powerful than the botanicals from which they are extracted. Essential oils are the “lifeblood” of a plant because the oil protects the plant from disease, provides it nutrients, and helps it to fight off anything it doesn’t want. It keeps the plant (or tree, fruit, bark, root, etc.) healthy & functioning at its best! Essential oils have obviously been around for a long time since they are extracted from plants. They were mankind’s first medicine! Even today, they are still used to promote health in the body, both physically & emotionally.
Why Young Living? Essential Oils come in all shapes and sizes. However, they are not all created equally! When I began experimenting with Essential Oils, I bought some online, at a local department store, and even at a grocery store. “Underwhelmed” doesn’t even quite describe it. While most oils on the market are all called “essential oils,” they are not all the same. There are very little regulations when it comes to essential oils sold. Did you know that an oil can be sold as a “pure” essential oil in a store just by having a small percentage of actual essential oils in them? A lot of the oils you see in stores have fillers in them or are heavily diluted. An effective essential oil should be potent, volatile, and effective. You should be able to notice a difference when using high quality oils quickly. If you don’t, consider whether the oil is a high quality essential oil or not. My family chooses and loves Young Living Essential Oils. I truly have been so impressed with this company. Young Living is the only company out there that has what is called the “Seed to Seal” promise or anything like it. It means that Young Living controls every single aspect of their production line. They own their own farms, plant their own seeds, cultivate their own crops… They do everything from the time it gets planted in the ground until it actually gets placed in the bottle. That’s why they call it the “Seed to Seal” promise. Young Living can say with 100% guarantee that they know what is inside of each and every bottle, and they are pure beyond a shadow of a doubt. That makes me and my family feel good about using these oils!

How to Use Essential Oils
Aromatically Diffusing essential oils is a perfect way to improve your home, work, or living environment. Diffusing can purify the air and neutralize odors as well as protect you and your family from harmful things we breathe in the air. Diffusing can also help with mood regulation.
Internally A lot of people are surprised by the fact that you can ingest certain essential oils. Several oils are generally regarded as safe for ingestion by the FDA. Always check the product packaging and do your research before ingesting an essential oil. Young Living labels several of their oils as “Vitality, which means that it is safe for ingestion.
Topically Direct application onto the skin is one of the easiest ways to use essential oils. It is also a highly effective method since essential oils can easily pass through the lipid membranes of cell walls. They are able to penetrate cells and disperse throughout the body within minutes. The bottom of the feet is a good place to apply oils directly because many nerve endings are found there and the pores of the skin are large in that area. See page 6 for more information.

Diluting Oils for Topical Use Carrier oils are usually overlooked because they don’t contain the therapeutic constituents of other essential oils, but they can play an indispensable companion of topically applied oils. Let’s take a closer look at these carriers and why they deserve a place on the shelf of anyone who uses and loves essential oils!
What Are Carrier Oils? Carrier oils are naturally derived from vegetarian sources and have a neutral smell. They aren’t volatile like essential oils, which makes them an excellent medium for dilution and application. Below are some of the more popular carrier oils: Young Living V-6 Oil Jojoba Oil Olive Oil Fractionated Coconut Oil (What I use) Grapeseed Oil Shea Butter
How Are Carrier Oils Used? Essential oils are volatile, which means they evaporate rapidly and contain the natural smell and characteristics of the plant. This can make them too strong to apply undiluted. Carrier oils do not evaporate or have a strong aroma, making them the perfect pair for diluting especially strong essential oils—reducing the concentration of the essential oil without altering its therapeutic qualities. When you dilute an essential oil with a carrier oil, you can also control its concentration before applying. Carrier oils can vary widely in their consistency, absorption, aroma, shelf life, and other characteristics. Carrier oils can be blended to change or combine their properties, so you can mix and match until you find the blend that’s just right for you!

Vita-Flex Application Vita Flex is said to have had a long past, but perfected in the 1960’s by a man named Stanley Burroughs. The Vita Flex technique means “vitality through the reflexes”. Many people are familiar with reflexology and this is similar to that. We have a complete network of reflex points on our bodies that stimulate all of our internal body systems. This technique is often times done on the feet (see chart below) and focused in on the body system you’d like to support. Using the pads and nails of your fingers (it’s good to have short nails), you use a rolling motion going from pads and all the way over to the topside of your nail(s). This produces an electrical stimulation into the body through the reflex points. The pressure used should be light to medium. Repeat this rolling and releasing technique until the entire vita flex point or area is covered. Place a drop or two in your left hand and take the pads of your fingers on your right hand and rub in the oils (usually in a clockwise motion). Finally, apply it to the foot on the lower half, above the heel as shown on the chart. Make sure and do the rolling and releasing motion all across the foot to make sure and get all those digestive organs. Repeat it for the other foot.
