PUBLISHER’S LETTER

The Professor

W

hen I was in college, I always looked up to my professors. They were wise beyond their years and needed to be dynamic speakers, as they had to keep 30 students awake and attentive for an entire class. When I first met Ted Teng, president and CEO of The Leading Hotels of the World, he reminded me of my college professors. In this month’s cover story, we see that Teng is both a student of the past and a visionary of the future: he thinks big and is an advocate for the independent luxury hotel, but he thinks beyond just Leading Hotels of the World — he cares about all independent hotels. As chain hotels figure out that authenticity is what sells, they attempt to crumble the exact cookie-cutter mold they created. On the other hand, Teng and Leading Hotels of the World see the opportunity to be positioned perfectly for today’s affluent traveler. Teng also realizes that you must be different in order to stand out of the pack. With nearly 400 hotels — or, let’s say, students — Teng preaches the uniqueness of all. Even with the selling of the collection Teng takes a different approach. For instance, twice annually he holds his Ted Teng’s Duck Dinner with elite travel advisors and the Leading staff. Each table seats 20, drawn at random with no speeches or sales pitches on the agenda; it’s simply a night of networking and conversation. All attendees become classmates for an evening of sharing knowledge led by Teng, our professor. Pictured above are my tablemates from this summer’s Duck Dinner — a truly authentic experience that only Ted Teng could assemble.

Curating the “Authentic” Experience

H

IN SPAIN: I’m shown here in

Mallorca, enjoying the local environment on a cruise I recently sailed on with Seabourn. Watch for a report on how we tasted wine through Spain and France in a future issue.

ave you noticed that we increasingly make every effort to not communicate directly with other people in our daily lives but that when we go on vacation we yearn to connect with others, and, in some cases, are willing to pay extra to do it? Apps and e-mail help us avoid direct interaction. Many of us rarely answer our phones; we’ll even stare at it as it rings, wondering who has the gall to bother us without asking first. Some of us dread the idea of straightening out a customer service issue by speaking to another person. Live chat is preferable and I think it’s because you don’t have to hear that other person hesitate or speak in a doubtful tone that might indicate you’re not going to get your own way, immediately. But if you ask an affluent consumer what they want to do on a vacation, they may say they are craving interaction with like-minded individuals and that they want to live like a local and enjoy an “authentic” experience. They want a dose of edgy real life but in a semi-controlled environment so there is no fear of something totally uncomfortable happening. That’s where the luxury travel advisor comes in. You understand your clients and, even better, you know what they don’t like. How much authenticity can your clients stand? You know how far they can be pushed before they text you to rescue them from too much real life. Virtuoso’s senior vice president of global product partnerships, Albert Herrera, moderated an intriguing panel discussion at Virtuoso Travel Week last month that focused on “The Evolving Hotel Experience.” One participant, Jack Ezon, president of Ovation Vacations, said his clients are asking to visit those hotels that are less predictable in their

offerings. That’s not a knock against the branded, luxury chains, it’s that his clients are looking for places that have a personality attached to it. “People want to feel where they are; they want that heart and soul, because at the end of the day, they’re connecting with a person and not the hotel,” he said. Make no mistake, however. That same customer is still looking for a hotel that is best-in-class; they’re not looking to take a step down in service or accommodations. The property still needs to have been vetted by a luxury organization, or visited by the travel advisor personally. Then it’s up to the advisor to determine if the personality of that hotel — or, ultimately, that general manager or hotel owner — is suitable for their clients. Ezon argues as well that independent hoteliers don’t always have to work too hard to provide that “live like a local” experience because they are already local. “They’ve lived three generations in this town and it’s their family’s hotel, or everyone who comes from there is not a transplant from somewhere else. This is where they live,” he said. Which brings us to Ted Teng, president and CEO of The Leading Hotels of the World, who is featured on our cover this month. Teng was also on the Virtuoso panel, and his message was the same as when I visited with him in his Manhattan office recently. His firm belief is that the hoteliers that run Leading’s hotels are the soul of their properties and able to, with the help of their teams, craft the unique experiences that guests are looking for. “They’re like an artist or a musician,” said Teng. “When they express themselves, they’re creating, and that’s what I see in our hotels.” For more on Leading and Teng’s insights on today’s consumer, see pages 32 through 36.

PARK HYATT ST. KITTS (here) will have 78 rooms and 48 suites, overlooking Banana Bay. The Great House restaurant (below) in the hotel has a Rum Bar and a conservatory serving plantation afternoon tea.

The Park Hyatt St. Kitts Christophe Harbour, opening in November, will span the beach of Banana Bay and focus on art, culinary experiences and immersive excursions, according to the hotel’s management. All 78 rooms and 48 suites will have private balconies and terraces, and will overlook Banana Bay. The interiors will sport local artwork, rain showers and deep soaking tubs. We hear the 19 Premium suites will have private plunge pools and private sun decks. VIPs looking to go all out should also check out the resort’s Presidential Villa, which has two bedrooms with King beds, a private infinity pool, a game room and a wellness area. Note: The 5,210-square-foot villa also comes with a butler and the services of a private chef. For further details on the rooms, reach out to Meg Hellmuth (meg.hellmuth@hyatt. com), sales manager. St. Kitts’ Robert L. Bradshaw 8

International Airport is, roughly, a 20-minute drive from the resort. Guests arriving at Bradshaw can enjoy service from the signature YU Lounge private jet terminal. Note: Only private jets and select guests who might have opted for a package receive the special Yu Lounge experience and entry. VIPs are met at their aircraft and escorted to the lounge where they can enjoy refreshments and Caribbean tapas. Nice Touch: While the YU Lounge team assists with customs and immigration, luggage will be transferred from the tarmac to a chauffeured vehicle to take guests to the resort. Hint: Luxury Travel Advisor was told the hotel is putting together an offer for all guests staying in the Presidential Villa to go through the Yu Lounge arrival and is considering other packages. Highlights at the hotel’s signature The Great House restaurant include a trendy Rum Bar with some of the best rums from the

region and a conservatory serving plantation afternoon tea. Hint: Tell guests dining at the Great House to order either the Orange & Sugar Cane Braised Fennel or the Caribbean Pepperpot Lamb Shank Stew. The Sugar Mill Spa & Sanctuary will have nine treatment rooms and a 1,750-squarefoot, 24-hour fitness club with cardio equipment and weights. Note: We were told all spa treat-

ments should be booked two to three months in advance. In the bridal suite, the hotel can provide hair, makeup, inroom hand / shoulder massages and other customized treatments upon request. Hint: Brides and grooms can take advantage of double treatment rooms for massages, as well as custom beachside meditation and yoga experiences to calm pre-wedding jitters. The Beachfront Lawn can

be used for wedding ceremonies and the terraces can host receptions. Tip: There are numerous photography locations, from the sandy beach and rolling hills behind the resort to the sugar mill in the spa, all providing beautiful backdrops. Each wedding will have a dedicated event planner who will work with the wedding party to take care of every arrangement. Hint: The closest golf course is Royal St. Kitts golf course (20 minutes away); however, there is development taking place on the southeast peninsula and a golf course will be available within 10 minutes of the hotel likely by 2018. With views of neighboring Nevis, the resort will provide non-motorized water activities, including snorkeling, paddleboarding and kayaking. Note: The Lagoon pool will be dedicated to family enjoyment, while the Rampart pool will be available for guests looking for an adults-only option.

For all other hotel enquiries, connect with Julian Moore (julian.moore@hyatt.com), general manager. French Leave Resort French Leave Resort opened late last year in the luxurious Out Islands of the Bahamas and is already earning a reputation as a modern and chic hangout for both Millennial couples and families. Luxury Travel Advisor was told that the two two-bedroom oceanfront villas at this Marriott Autograph Collection hotel are the most requested accommodations. Both are situated on the harbor front on the island of Eleuthera and have ocean views. Each comes with a full kitchen as well as a washer and dryer. These are Villa No. 9 and Villa No. 12. The two-bedroom oceanfront villas are also the best for large families as they are the biggest accommodations: there are two bedrooms, a common living and dining room area, as well as large

balconies. Hint: All of the villas have amazing views overlooking the Caribbean Sea, but the villas closest to the water are Villas 9, 10, 11 and 12. Every room comes with an iPad through which the concierge can accommodate all sorts of requests, ranging from dining arranged poolside to picnic baskets packed in the villas’ golf carts to pillow and housekeeping deliveries. Nice Touch: When booking a stay at the resort, guests receive a golf cart per villa and have access to complimentary water sport equipment, including paddleboards, kayaks and snorkel gear. Note: There is no spa at this hotel. There will be two new Oceanfront One-bedroom Villas that will be open by November. They will have a plush king bed and a private bathroom with double sinks and a spacious shower. Double French doors open up into the living room area and the fully equipped kitchen with fullsize, high-end appliances.

For all other room enquiries, reach out to Shamario Farrington (sfarrington@frenchleaveresort. com), resort host. The hotel’s signature restaurant, 1648, An Island Restaurant, is open to both locals and guests. Popular items include the Conch Rangoons, chili-braised Bahamian conch in a crispy wonton with scallion and herb cream cheese served with sweet and spicy dipping sauce; and the French Eleutheran Grouper, which is served blackened, grilled, or pan fried with peas and rice, cherry tomato salsa, seasonal vegetables, and remoulade sauce. For all dining requests, connect with Patrick Rahming (prhaming@frenchleaveresort. com), restaurant manager. The hotel’s freshwater pool overlooks one of the Caribbean’s most picturesque harbors, Cupid’s Cay in Eleuthera. The pool has sweeping views of the waters, and is a great place to enjoy sunrise and sunset. VIPs can also unwind and relax with delicious poolside dining options, which include lobster salads, pan seared ahi tuna and grouper wraps, along with inventive cocktails and the Bahamian lemonade, “Switcha.” For guests looking for activities outside the pool, the concierge can arrange fishing expeditions, specifically bone fishing, reef fishing and big game fishing; and water adventure excursions through Fishbone Tours; as well as boat charters. There are three airports on the island, but for guests of French Leave Resort, the two preferred ones are Governor’s Harbour Airport, which is a five- to 10-minute drive from the resort; and North Eleuthera Airport, which is about an hour away. For other enquiries, or to further customize a stay at the French Leave Resort, reach out to Jahmed Mills (jmills@frenchleaveresort. com), general manager. g

Serenity at Coconut Bay One of Luxury Travel Advisor’s favorite four-star all-inclusives in St. Lucia just got a five-star sister resort. All suites at the Serenity at Coconut Bay, the new neighbor of Coconut Bay Beach Resort & Spa, have plunge pools, custom12

entertainment centers, Molton Brown toiletries and complimentary Wi-Fi. The best overall suites at the resort are the Grande Plunge Pool Butler Suites. The 1,900-square-foot corner suites come with a patio deck, a plunge pool with a waterfall, an outdoor shower, a gazebo and a lounge area with a fully stocked, wraparound wet bar. Additionally, while the large furnished living area boasts a 55-inch flat-screen TV, the fourposter mahogany bed houses a rise-up 42-inch flat-screen TV for pampered bedtime viewing experience. Nice Touch: The lavish, en-suite bathroom is outfitted with an oversized soaking tub and walk-in rain shower for the benefit of guests seeking a spa experience. Guests will be pampered with attentive but-

ler services and 24-hour room service. Hint: All of the resort’s 36 plunge pool suites include private butler service. For other room enquiries, reach out to Trish Korzeniowski (dos.cbayresort@gmail.com), director of sales. Although each of the 36 butler suites has its own plunge pool, it’s worth telling guests to take a plunge in Serenity’s main pool, which is a 3,000-squarefoot pool with a 1,000-squarefoot lap pool at its center. The two-tier design makes space for 24 in-water loungers, which frame the lap pool, while private Pool Cabanas and aqua circle beds also make for great relaxation spots. In the distance, guests can see Saint Lucia’s Maria Islands Nature Reserve. Note: The pool and the entire 36-suite resort can be taken over for private events.

For spa lovers, most Serenity guests prefer to choose from a selection of in-suite spa treatments. Tip: Should guests prefer treatments from an actual spa facility, the oceanfront spa at sister resort, Coconut Bay Beach Resort & Spa, has therapies in six air-conditioned treatment rooms complete with private showers or three private beachfront cabanas. The 11,000-square-foot facility also houses two saunas, two steam rooms, a relaxation lounge, a changing room and lockers in addition to a full-service hair and beauty salon. Tip: Spa services can be booked upon arrival by a Serenity butler. Hint: The most popular treatment here is the Chocolate Scrub, in which guests enjoy the benefits of natural, locally grown St. Lucian chocolate. As part of the scrub, coconut milk is massaged into the entire body, leaving the skin nourished and smooth for a luxurious finishing touch. There are also many spa options available at the hotel for wedding parties, including insuite treatments and spa buyout. At the oceanfront spa, packages include the Bridal Party Pre-Wedding Package and the Bridal Party Salon Package

available for groups of 10 or more. For the couples, there are the Beautiful Bride and Gallant Groom Salon Packages and a Happy Couple Package. For all other spa enquiries, connect with Julia Leone (spa@ cbayresort.com), spa director. As far as dining goes, the 10-seat Chef ’s Table at The Greathouse at Serenity is a mustvisit. It celebrates the cuisine of St. Lucia and is prepared by popular local chef Aunty Debbie. Served in a private dining room, this tasty meal highlights

the bounty of the island with the diner’s choice of chicken, fish and beef served alongside dishes incorporating breadfruit, pumpkin, okra, eggplant and sweet potato. Hint: Each Serenity guest is guaranteed a reservation at the resort’s The Greathouse restaurant or at one of the nine restaurants at sister property, Coconut Bay Beach Resort & Spa — where offerings range from Caribbean to Asian to Italian cuisine. Note: None of Serenity’s restaurants are open to locals. For golf enthusiasts, the St. THE GREATHOUSE AT SERENITY allows guests to

dine outdoors with views of the pool.

Lucia Golf Club is located on the northern tip of the island. This par-71, 18-hole championship course is 6,829 yards of green slopes and has a USGA rating of 74.3, taking well into account the strong winds, numerous water hazards, fast greens and 16 out-of-bounds. To put it simply, this is not a beginner’s course. Note: The transfers to and from Hewanorra International Airport, which is about a five-minute drive from the resort, are included in a guest’s stay at Serenity. To help further customize a luxury vacation to Serenity, connect with Mervin Joseph (mervin@cbayresort.com), head butler. Azul Beach Resort Sensatori Jamaica by Karisma Karisma Hotels & Resorts has reintroduced the new Azul Beach Resort Sensatori Jamaica by Karisma, which was the first Karisma property to be opened in the Caribbean several years ago but has since been completely renovated. Majestic Hotel & Spa, Barcelona

BY LORRAINE FINN With nearly 100 years of history behind its doors and a peak location at the top of the tree-lined Passeig de Gràcia, it’s easy to see why those Barcelona-bound seek refuge at The Majestic Hotel & Spa. We’re just back from the Catalan capital and a jaunt at this Barcelona landmark, which has seen the likes of Picasso, Hemingway and Joan Miró grace its halls. With a host of fresh menus and experiences, and an upcoming centennial anniversary, there’s plenty of new additions to check out at the Majestic. 18

The hotel clocks up an impressive 271 rooms across nine floors, all with stunning city views, of course. During our stay, we were housed in the 484-square-foot Junior Suite Passeig de Gracia, perfect for couples or those traveling with children. The suite encompasses a private living area with plenty of room for playtime, a comfy sofa bed and two petite balconies overlooking the city’s picturesque architecture. All the property’s expansive bathrooms are complete with his-and-her sinks, rain showers, and Parisian Atelier Cologne toiletries, as well as fluffy robes to wrap up in after a post-siesta soak.

LUXURY TRAVEL ADVISOR | SEPTEMBER 2017

VIP guests looking for the top digs should take their stay to the ninth floor, home to the property’s five penthouses, as well as the former living quarters of the Soldevila Casals family, the hotel’s owners. Guests can expect rooms with 1,000 square feet of space, butler service and private airport transfers. Make sure to enjoy the complimentary champagne and delish hors d’oeuvres, all from your private panoramic sundeck. Those in need of an even larger suite — the largest suite in Barcelona, to be exact — should check out the Majestic Royal Penthouse, the star of the hotel. This accommodation of nearly

5,000 square feet was one of the key results of Majestic’s 2013 restoration. The huge space can be adapted to include up to three bedrooms, each with its own private living quarters and en-suite. We loved the spacious lounge, decorated with oriental motifs and oak floors, the work of Mallorcan designer Antonio Obrador. With seating for up to 14 guests, this space is perfect for a cocktail gettogether. Don’t forget to request a stock-up of the room’s maxi-bar with a custom-tailored selection of gourmet goodies. Top Extra: Look out for the room’s Bar à Parfum, a leather-cased ‘bar’ of five Atelier fragrances, including a mini

takeaway kit. Later, head outdoors onto, not one, but, two terraces and take in some of Barcelona’s (mostly) year-round sunshine. We recommend an evening Jacuzzi dip, with first-class views of Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia. Good to know: Majestic is one of Spain’s first hotels to offer adapted rooms for guests with severe disabilities. Notable features include overhead bed lifts, adapted bathing areas and remote control doors and windows. Note: Luxury travel advisors sending their top clients should contact general manager Pascal Billard (pbillard@hotelmajestic.es) Craving a bite to eat? Don’t be overwhelmed by the hotel’s five eateries, both onsite and offsite. The Michelin-starred chef, Nandu Jubany, acts as the hotel’s gastronomic advisor, incorporating local Catalan produce into international dishes. Don’t overlook El Bar del Majestic, a cozy corner in the hotel, perfect for people-watching after a day in the city. Don’t leave without trying Nandu’s speciality tapas, our standout dish during the stay. This Instagram-worthy platter is piled high with parmesan “Oreos,” mini-vegetable tartare with beet bread, and foie gras mi-cuit with caramelized almonds. The more fashion forward will enjoy the hotel’s Majestic Champagne Fashion tea. Combining sweet treats, savory bites and champagne (naturally) with a high-fashion twist, guests can choose from

five different eclairs inspired by designer collections, including Jimmy Choo and Salvatore Ferragamo. Top Tip: Weekend visitors should treat themselves to Nandu’s Sunday brunch. This feast for the eyes and belly has a weekly rotating menu, including Eggs Benedict and scallop risotto, all alongside an open champagne Moët and gin and tonic bar. Our highlight is the show-cooking station, where guests can watch chefs whip up some specialty dishes such as spicy ceviche and fresh sushi. Looking to continue the party? Evening sees brunch moving to the rooftop, with the Majestic After Brunch (think DJs and digestif cocktails, perfect to wash down your meal). Not only host to the After Brunch, the rooftop La Dolce Vitae, our favorite spot, is the perfect poolside hangout on a hot day. Imagine cityscape views all from the comfort of your sun lounger, cava in hand, of course. The warm summer nights brought with them the start of the hotel’s Friday night Majestic Sunset Sessions, with International DJs gracing the decks. Tip: Check it out until the end of September. Have a guest with some VIP requests? The Majestic’s concierge have seen it all, be it sourcing saffron from Iran or organizing a private dinner or tour of the Sagrada Familia with one of the church’s architects. To cater to these exclusive whims, the hotel

has launched a new service, a menu of customizable Barcelona “experiences.” Take your pick: From driving a 500 horsepower vehicle around a professional race track, getting a behind-thescene look at some of Barcelona’s famous chocolate kitchens, or, one for the wine aficionados (and our favorite), a private Med sailing trip and wine lesson. For queries and special requests, reach out to Fernando Castillo (fcastillo@hotelmajestic. es), the hotel concierge. Indulgence is key at the Majestic’s Spa. The space is tucked away on the building’s top floor and is fitted with spa booths, make-up stations and a hot and cold hydrotherapy zone. Complete a relaxing day at the beach with a Lomi Lomi Ritual, a combo of Hawaiian custom and Mediterranean massage. Noteworthy is the Kobido facial treatment, a 75-minute anti-aging facial massage done with the 2,000-year-old Kobido technique. Little ladies don’t have to feel left out as the spa offers “Princess Moment” — a specialty treatment fruity manicure served up with a chocolate milkshake. Top Tip: For guests needing the ultimate wake up call, we recommend the Majestic Beauty Yoga Sessions, an early morning yoga workout on the rooftop. Get a tan in with your workout, then finish up with a detox juice and a cooling dip in the pool. Contact spa@hotelmajestic.es to set up any spa requests. g

Vietnam Voyages River and ocean journeys deliver new experiences and authentic adventures. BY SUSAN J. YOUNG

LUXURY TRAVEL ADVISOR | SEPTEMBER 2017

As more cruise ships head for Asian waters, many are adding port calls or embarkation options in Vietnam. Cruisers love the country’s exotic aura, bustling cities, Vietnam War-era sites and savory Asian cuisine. In the Mekong Delta, luxury travelers can see rural life, while the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ha Long (or Halong) Bay has HA LONG BAY (here) is home to

three traditional floating fishing villages that date back to the early 19th century.

on March 17, 2018. Launching in 2018, sister Viking Spirit will operate a new 15-day “Southeast Asia and Hong Kong” itinerary from Bangkok, departing September 23, 2018. Maiden calls include Ho Chi Minh City and Ha Long. Pedicab rides are offered by many other lines too and in other Vietnamese cities. During Queen Mary 2’s 13-night Singapore roundtrip on March 23, 2018, Cunard Line offers a pedicab sightseeing tour around Nha Trang to see a French Gothic-style Stone Church, colonial-era homes, Front Beach, the Cai River Bridge and Dam Market, where cruisers can get out to stroll or shop. This is a great spot to buy ceramics, embroidery, lacquerware or Vietnamese tea. Soaring above Ha Long Bay: The majesty of Ha Long Bay — made famous in the French film “Indochine” — impresses at sea level, so imagine the stunning visual effect from the air. Guests

traveling on Windstar Cruises’ 14-day “Icons of Southeast Asia” itinerary on the Star Legend from Hong Kong to Bangkok on January 20, 2018 can opt for a 25-minute seaplane flight, which will provide sweeping views of Ha Long Bay’s many islets, limestone pillars, coves, beaches, rock arches and green waters. Of course, Windstar also offers a more down-to-earth option — a Ha Long Bay cruise. Beyond the two-day port call in the bay, this Windstar itinerary also features two days at Ho Chi Minh City and one day at Nha Trang. Onboard the 212-passenger Star Legend, guests can spread out in spacious accommodations, including the top-end Owner’s Suites at 575 square feet with separate living and dining areas, a master bedroom, master bath, separate guest bath and private veranda. stunning eco-beauty. Here are some favorite Vietnam experiences for cruise guests. Taking a Wild Ride: Certainly, one of the most fun — and crazy — things to do in Vietnam is to hop onboard a pedicab (or cyclo-rickshaw or simply cyclo) for a frenetic city tour. On Viking Ocean Cruises’ “Ho Chi Minh City on Three Wheels” excursion, guests will zip around the city (formerly called Saigon) to see French-inspired architecture, including NotreDame Cathedral and the grand Central Post Office designed by Gustave Eiffel. It’s a frenetic ride as cyclos share the road with bicycles, scooters, cars and trucks, many zooming by or beeping their horns. But it’s a fantastic way to observe daily life — from women in traditional “ao dai” attire to incense smoke wafting from temples or farmers transporting their crops to market. Viking’s new 930-passenger vessel, Viking Sun, will make a Ho Chi Minh City maiden call

will visit Vietnam for the first time during its November 9, 2018 cruise from Singapore to Hong Kong. Guests will have a robust Vietnam experience with two full days at Ho Chi Minh City, one day at Hue / Da Nang (Chan May) and two full days at Ha Long Bay, the port for Hanoi, Vietnam’s capital. Another voyage on March 21, 2019 sails from Singapore to Hong Kong with three days in Ho Chi Minh City and a day at Da Nang. We’d opt for Silversea’s “Saigon Street Foods Experience,” which begins with a tour of the Fito Museum, devoted to studying Vietnamese herbal medicine and pharmacy; cruisers will learn how the Vietnamese balance their diet with herbal medicinal treatments. Next, they may visit Saigon Food Street (26-28-30 Thu Khoa Huan Street) and then stroll through the city’s famous Ben Thanh Market. Check out the market’s food stalls that offer fresh, made-toorder dishes — everything from spring rolls (goi cuon) to hue cakes (banh beo) or Vietnamese noodle soup (pho). Then it’s on to the Ngon restaurant, which serves street vendor cuisine throughout Vietnam. After exploring the food stalls, a light Vietnamese lunch is served.

Exploring Cham Pa Culture: Oceania Cruises’ Nautica sails a 33-day “Captivating Far East” voyage on March 7, 2019 from Hong Kong to Singapore, with calls at Ho Chi Minh City as well as Chan May (for Hue and Da Nang exploration). At Chan May, cultural buffs can take Oceania’s full-day excursion to the impressive Museum of Cham Sculpture (or Cham Pa Museum) in Da Nang and also the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hoi An, a 15thcentury trading port along the Thu Bon River. Founded by French scholars in the early 20th century, the Cham Pa Museum showcases artwork from the Cham Pa Dynasty of central Vietnam. It’s an unexpected cultural jewel, as cruisers likely will “ooh” and “aah” at hundreds of sculptures

and sandstone carvings. Within Hoi An’s “Old Town,” it’s fun to walk along narrow streets and peruse the historic homes, temples, pagodas and bridges. Next is a tour of the Hoi An Museum of History and Culture, which displays porcelains, huge bells, photographs and maps, and visits to Phuc Kien Temple and the Japanese Bridge. Overnighting in the Delta: Launching next spring, the 600-passenger Seabourn Ovation will ply Asian waters during its inaugural year. Multiple 14-day itineraries between Singapore and Hong Kong will call at Thailand and several Vietnam ports, including Ha Long Bay (for Hanoi touring) and Ho Chi Minh City. If cruisers have been to Ho Chi Minh City in the past, we’d suggest Seabourn’s “Night in the Mekong Delta”

HO CHI MINH CITY‘s Ben Thanh street food market (above) has stalls that serve fresh, made-to-order dishes. THE JAPANESE COVERED BRIDGE (here) in Hoi An was constructed with a roof so

that it could be used as a shelter from both rain and sun.

overnight excursion to Cai Be, just two hours — yet seemingly a world — away. Cruisers often will see buffalo in the fields and farmers planting rice and fruit trees, before arriving at the Mekong Riverside Boutique Resort & Spa for an overnight stay. Check out the resort’s vegetable and fruit garden. Guests can also choose to go swimming, kayaking, fishing or biking. It’s fun to finish out the day with a sunset cocktail; cooking lesson focused on spring rolls; and dinner with local Mekong entertainment. The following morning, cruisers will visit a floating market, small villages and farmers’ homes. Going Underground at Cu Chi Tunnels: A seven-night “Classic Mekong” itinerary is operated by Pandaw on multiple dates in 2018 and 2019. For example, on December 29, 2018, Mekong Pandaw sails upstream between My Tho (for Ho Chi Minh City) in the Mekong River Delta and Siem Reap, Cambodia. Port calls include Sa Dec and Chau Doc, Vietnam, as well as at Phnom Penh, village(s) along the Tonle River (depending on water levels) and Kratie. This itinerary also heads much further north in Cambodia than other river itineraries typically go. The reward? Guests have the chance to spot rare Mekong River dolphins. To explore more in Vietnam, we’d opt for Pandaw’s two-night pre-cruise stay at the InterContinental Saigon Hotel, Ho Chi Minh City. It’s a great way to dust off the jet lag, and also offers an “included” tour of the Cu Chi Tunnels, a maze of underground passages built by the Viet Cong during Vietnam’s 20th-century conflicts. En route to the tunnels, cruisers can gaze at country scenes while learning more about cashew nut farming, duck breeding, rice farming and rice paper production.

CHAU DOC (above), a port of call on Pandaw’s Mekong Pandaw,

will give guests a chance to gaze at rural scenes like rice farming. THE ONE PILLAR PAGODA (here) in Hanoi is a Buddhist temple rising from a square-shaped, lotus pond.

Strolling through Imperial Hue: On October 16, 2018, Azamara Club Cruises offers a “Vietnam and Thailand Intensive” sailing on Azamara Quest from Hong Kong to Singapore. Vietnam port visits include Ha Long Bay, Nha Trang and Ho Chi Minh City, where the ship docks not far from the Rex Hotel in a district famed for nightlife. This voyage also calls at Bangkok (Klong Toey) and Koh Samui, Thailand. On this itinerary, we’d opt for Azamara’s shore excursion to the Imperial City of Hue. 24

It’s easy to imagine Vietnam in the Imperial era while gazing at Hue’s magnificent Citadel; its design is similar to that of Beijing’s Forbidden City. Cruisers will pass through Hue’s Mon Gate to the Imperial enclosure and view the Palace of Supreme Harmony. The tour then heads for the Tu Duc Tomb (also known as Khiem Tomb), one of the most beautiful Imperial Tombs, in a setting notable for its frangipanis, pines and a lotus pond. tional, multi-course Vietnamese meal ashore while cruisers watch a royal dance. Floating Along, Tasting Wines: For 2018, AmaWaterways has expanded its exotic Vietnam / Cambodia offerings. The 124-passenger AmaDara will sail seven-night Mekong voyages between Ho Chi Minh City and Siem Reap. The line also offers 10-night cruiseand-land programs with three nights on land in Siem Reap so guests can explore the ancient Angkor; and 15-night cruise-andland programs that overnight in Ho Chi Minh City, Siem Reap, Ha Long Bay and Hanoi. What’s nifty? AmaWaterways, which has a plethora of European wine sailings, will begin its first wine-hosted cruise in Asia on March 26, 2018. The “Riches of the Mekong” voyage will be hosted by Sbragia Family Vineyards from California’s Dry Creek Valley, so guests can expect special onboard wine lectures and tastings. On AmaDara sailings, we’d opt for the 502-squarefoot Luxury Suites, although all accommodations have private twin balconies (a French balcony plus a full-size exterior balcony).

An Evening in Saigon: On March 12, 2018, Crystal Cruises’ 1,070-passenger Crystal Serenity will sail a 16-day “Far East Vistas” voyage from Manila to Singapore, with three days in Hong Kong in addition to Vietnam calls. During time in Ho Chi Minh City, we’d suggest taking Crystal’s four-hour “Evening in Saigon.” Guests are transported to the iconic Hotel Majestic, with French Colonial architecture; it was a favorite Vietnam War-era haunt of journalists and spies. Travelers taking this excursion will head to the Majestic’s rooftop terrace for pre-dinner cocktails and traditional entertainment (Vietnamese music, dances and costumes). They’ll then continue to a deluxe local restaurant for a dinner of such dishes (among others) as crabmeat spring rolls, banana flower salad with grilled beef or sautéed rice in lotus leaves. Separately, in 2018, Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic’s guests visiting Ho Chi Minh City will be treated to a private, catered dinner and traditional Vietnamese musical experience at a lovely French Colonial home where Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr. resided during his Vietnam War-era service as U.S. Ambassador under Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. This private event was offered on one departure last year, but for 2018, the line is expanding the program to all departures of “Vietnam and Cambodia: Along the Mekong River, including Angkor and Saigon,” operated by the 48-passenger Jahan. Into the Heart of Hanoi: Debuting in September 2018 is Avalon Saigon, Avalon Waterways’ new 36-passenger Suite Ship on the Mekong River, a sister to Avalon Siem Reap. Among its voyages in 2018, Avalon Saigon operates new 18-day “Heart of Cambodia & Vietnam” from Siem Reap to

Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi. For “let’s do it all” travelers, one good option is the 16-day “Fascinating Vietnam, Cambodia and the Mekong River with Hanoi and Ha Long Bay” itinerary, as it has robust Hanoi city sightseeing. First, cruisers visit Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum and “Uncle Ho’s” cottage on stilts; Hoan Kiem Lake (the Lake of the Restored Sword); and the Temple of Literature, Hanoi’s first university. As we’ve learned from a past visit, watch the tile roofs carefully; some may appear to be “moving,” but it’s just the resident lizards on an outing. Travelers also will see the One Pillar Pagoda rising from an elegant, square-shaped lotus pond, plus the Ho Chi Minh Museum, Presidential Palace and the 1960s-era prison, called the “Hanoi Hilton” because U.S. servicemen were imprisoned there. After lunch, cruisers will be whisked through Hanoi’s Old Quarter via “cyclos.” Here, streets have shops specializing in one type of product (such as silver or housewares). Silk Street (Hang Gai Street) is home to

tailoring shops and high-profile silk and clothing boutiques. For those with time to shop, clothing can be made to order, but Khai Silk and Tan My Designs have high-quality, ready-made clothing. Silk ties, scarves and silk bags are good buys. Be sure to bargain vigorously, even if fixed prices are posted. Exploring Rural Vietnam: During a 14-night Hong Kong to Bangkok “Icons of the Orient” cruise on April 8, 2018, guests onboard Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Voyager will go ashore at several Vietnamese ports, including Nha Trang, Chan May (for Hue / Da Nang) and Ho Chi Minh City. At Nha Trang, guests can immerse themselves in Vietnam’s country lifestyle on the line’s “Nha Trang’s Rural Life” excursion. So why not meet the locals, see buffalo and ducks, and watch farmers in the fields? Along the way, Regent’s guests will tour a temple, visit a farmer’s home and stroll through a market. Cruisers can also watch a village family weaving floor mats from sedge or baskets from banana leaves. Tour goers will also taste tropical fruits and enjoy a coconut drink, before visiting a Buddhist pagoda and a local rice-paper workshop. Further south, some Mekong

River cruises will take cruisers ashore at Sa Dec or Cu Lao Gieng Island. Luxury travelers can visit both on the same day on Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection’s two-week “Timeless Wonders of Vietnam, Cambodia & the Mekong” itinerary between Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. Sa Dec, a sleepy former provincial capital, was the childhood home of French novelist Marguerite Duras, while serene Gieng Island has a surprising array of religious structures. At Sa Dec, Uniworld’s cruisers will journey along narrow canals by boat and then visit a local market to peruse fresh fish, clothes, flowers and such oddities as snake blood kept for sale. They’ll also see the Huynh Thuy Le House. Duras’ novel, “The Lover,” was reportedly based on her doomed love affair with a wealthy Chinese landowner’s son who lived in this house. At Gieng Island, once part of Vietnam’s largest Catholic parish, cruisers will view a largely abandoned Franciscan monastery and Providence nunnery, plus a still-active, Baroque-style church. Operating this itinerary is the 68-passenger, all-suite Mekong Navigator, a new addition to Uniworld’s fleet with French Colonial styling and 584-squarefoot Grand Suites.

Delving into Water Traditions: Kids of all ages love traditional Vietnamese water puppet shows, so on its river itineraries that include a Hanoi visit, Scenic “Enrich” will transport cruisers to a water puppet show and provide a backstage pass so they can learn more about this ancient art. Among the itineraries where it’s offered is Scenic Spirit’s 27-day “Grand Indochina & Luxury Mekong” itinerary operating between Hanoi and Luang Prabang, Laos, on multiple 2018-19 dates. In a very different type of water experience, at Cai Be in the Mekong Delta, Silversea Expeditions’ guests can get their hands into the culture by working alongside local farmers who will teach them the art of “bailing ditches” or catching fish from man-made trenches or ponds. The 120passenger Silver Discoverer departs February 16, 2018 from Phuket, Thailand, to Ho Chi Minh City, with calls at ports in Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia and Vietnam. Viking River Cruises and other lines also sail within or to Vietnam, so there are plenty of good options for those wishing to explore Southeast Asia via a cruise. g

Windstar’s

Scotland and Ireland BY ADAM LEPOSA Wild and windswept, a Scotland and Ireland sailing onboard Windstar’s Star Pride is not your typical warm-weather cruise, but for travelers with an adventurous spirit and a flexible approach to their itinerary, it can be a treat. The Star Pride is a small ship with a capacity of only 212 passengers, lending the sailing a relaxed feel. (You can even pop in to the bridge and check out the ship’s operations, as long as the ship isn’t in port and conditions are safe.) Despite the small size, the ship never felt cramped, and we always felt like we had plenty of space to spread out in the various lounges and public areas. And while the North Sea sent us some rough weather that forced us to miss a port or two, feeling the spray on your face as the rugged Scottish Highlands loom in the distance is an experience not to be missed. 28

Life On Board: One of our favorite spots on the ship was the Yacht Club, an indoor lounge all the way forward on Deck Eight with panoramic windows and a number of cozy nooks to tuck up with a book and watch the breathtaking Highlands scenery go by — perfect for whiling away a sea day. The Club is particularly quiet during the early morning (when a light breakfast is served) and while lectures and demonstrations are taking place in the ship’s Lounge, although it gets a little livelier in the evening when it plays host to live music. The Yacht Club is also right next door to the outdoor Star Bar, which came in handy when dealing with the changeable weather. Often shifting from sun to rain and back again, sometimes over the course of a single hour, being able to sit in the sunshine when it was available — and seek shelter when it was not — was quite useful.

History buffs won’t want to miss the lineup of programming in the ship’s Lounge, where local experts offer insights on the history and culture of the destination. On a less academic note, guests here can also take in fun demonstrations on topics like cocktail making and cooking. For a vibrant experience, check out the ship’s Compass Rose bar and lounge, aft on Deck Six. This bar is the second of the ship’s two live music venues, and it tends to have a buzzier scene in the evening. (The night before we disembarked, we were even pulled onto the floor by one passenger for an impromptu dance party!) Good to know: If you’re prone to seasickness and Dramamine isn’t cutting it, the Compass Rose is also the best spot to ride out bad weather during the day. During one particularly rough sea day, our traveling companion, after some experimentation, found this to be the most stable spot on the ship.

Dining: By far the standout among the Star Pride’s culinary offerings is the Candles restaurant. Reservations are required, and it’s best to book right during check-in to secure a spot. While on warm-weather itineraries Candles’ guests can dine al fresco in the ship’s courtyard behind the pool and whirlpool; on this itinerary, Candles was set up on the Verandah, which still offered sunset views through a bank of windows on the ship’s stern. Similarly, the sailing’s “Deck Barbecue” event — which incorporates dishes ranging from paella to suckling pig — was set up in AmphorA, the ship’s open-seating restaurant that also serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. (Hint: On the Star Pride, the chef in AmphorA, who hails from India, makes a delicious biryani, rich with layered flavors and a spice level that creeps up on you without being overwhelming. Check it out!)

AmphorA is also your best bet for breakfast, particularly the made-to-order egg stations. While you can order a continental breakfast that will be delivered directly to your room, it was a bit small to sustain a big day out in port. Technology: Internet access was available in the ship’s Library, which was next to the casino and Compass Rose on Deck Six. Though small, it never seemed crowded. Wi-Fi was also available in all suites for guests who had purchased an Internet package for their device. The Internet speed was a bit slow; while checking e-mail proved no

problem, attempting to post an Instagram video of the dramatic sail-away ceremony (another voyage highlight) proved beyond the network’s capabilities. Accommodations: We stayed in one of the ship’s Oceanview Suites, which had a spacious seating area, walk-in closet and bathroom. For entertainment, in addition to a movie channel that would show films at set times, the flat-screen TV was hooked up to various cameras throughout the ship’s public areas and lounge, so that guests can check in on onboard life while still in their room. Sailing: We sailed on a Gaelic Explorers eight-day itinerary between Edinburgh and Dublin in late June visiting ports throughout the Scottish Highlands and Northern Ireland. Be Forewarned: Even in summer, the weather in the North Sea was definitely a factor, especially as the ship was calling at smaller ports that required a tender to shore. In addition to the aforementioned rough sea day, high wind and heavy swell prevented us from making port in Portree in the Isle of Skye and in Portrush (Belfast) in Northern Ireland. When Mother Nature cooperated, though, there was plenty of time to explore the Highlands, with the standout being a private event at Fort George in Invergordon (Inverness). After a tour of the fort, including The Highlanders’ Museum (another big hit with history buffs), we were treated to a private performance of the “Beating of Retreat,” which included a pipe and drum show, as well as a Highland Dance performance. Guests we spoke with seemed particularly impressed by this event — particularly the free-flowing Scotch! Speaking of Scotch, while it’s a good idea to save some time to explore the ports on your own or book a private guide, booking ahead for whiskey tastings and distillery tours is essential. The famous Highland Park Distillery in Kirkwall was particularly crowded. The Scapa Distillery, perched on a dramatic bluff overlooking the Scapa Flow, was more off-the-beaten-path, but hosted tours infrequently, making pre-planning important if you want to make it back to the ship. Oban also had a distillery quite close to where the ship docked, where we were able to book a tour and tasting as a walk-in with no trouble. Unfortunately, we had to hop off the ship in Portrush, although the itinerary continued to the Isle of Man and Dublin. All the more reason for another trip! g

art of the process for becoming a member of The Leading Hotels of the World is an interview that delves into expectations from the relationship. When Ted Teng, president and CEO of Leading, asked one hotel owner why he wanted to join the organization, he answered, “Because I don’t want to lose my identity.”

LUXURY TRAVEL ADVISOR | SEPTEMBER 2017

“That’s powerful because it tells us what our mission is,” Teng tells Luxury Travel Advisor. “It tells us that the execution of what we do should never encroach on a hotel’s identity. That’s why hotels join us. It’s critical for us to help them preserve their identity.” The hotel world has seen some dramatic mega-mergers of late, from Marriott International, Inc. with Starwood Hotels & Resorts

to AccorHotels and Fairmont Raffles Hotels International (FRHI). The jury is out on how the individual hotels within these companies change, or not, but it’s clear that individuality will stand out in this new environment. The Leading Hotels of the World is well poised to handle this scenario. It has more than 380 hotels in its mix, all with unique histories and styles of architecture; 88 percent are family-owned and nearly 95 percent are independently managed. Hotel owners take pride in their proprietorship and that’s a trait that goes way back for Leading, which will be 90 years old in 2018. Founded in 1928 by a group of luxury hoteliers who felt there was strength in joining forces rather than going it alone, The Leading Hotels of the World provides a high level of sales and marketing, and reservations services to its member

hotels, which tend to be grande dame properties or newer establishments that have opted to enter the market as unique entities, rather than tying up with an established brand with standards that must be followed to a T. Member hotels, whose personalities typically reflect their destinations, also get to wear the prestigious “Leading” imprimatur, which communicates that the hotel has a commitment to quality service. To join, hotels must meet a certain high criteria and maintain it during regular quality-inspection checks. Another competitive benefit to these independents is the Leaders Club, a two-tiered customer loyalty program that provides perks to frequent guests. That program was expanded in 2005 so that members and their travel advisors could update their travel preferences on a regular basis. This enabled hotels across the system to know more about their guests, even if they hadn’t stayed with them before. Fast forward to 2017. Teng, who joined the company in 2008, is focusing on being even more customer-centric. For Teng, and Leading’s portfolio of independent luxury hotels, it’s not as much about an individual trip reservation as a lifetime of reservations. It’s about moving from a customer-friendly mode to a mode that is sharply focused on that one client’s wants and desires. “Our business by nature is customerfriendly. That’s the luxury business. We smile. We’re always anticipating,” says Teng. “Customer centricity is about choosing a narrow customer segment that you’re going to serve, and then starting to gain insights into individual customers, not the entire segment. Customer centricity is about creating experiences for one, and it’s very different than where we’ve been,” he tells Luxury Travel Advisor. In today’s space, the entire industry, including independent hoteliers, tends to be very product-centric, he adds. “They’re very proud of their hotels. They’re proud of their service. They’re proud of all the experiences that they create. At the end of the day, that’s the product. To move from the product to individual experiences is not going to be easy, but I would say our hoteliers are probably best equipped to do it. They love to take care of customers. If you give them some insights about a customer, what they like, what they don’t like, they are thrilled.” All this varies from the mindset of the more structured brand environment, he says. “What’s great about a lot of chain brands is that they’re highly efficient, highly consistent, but if you’re

trying to do things individually, it takes it away from that efficiency and consistency. That’s hard for them to execute on, whereas our artistic hoteliers love to do it. They like to create original works of art, and one at a time. “Is that efficient? No, it’s terribly inefficient, but is it wonderful when you experience it just for you? Yes. Is it easy to execute on? No, it’s not. Is it rewarding? Very much so,” he adds. These are more than just insights on luxury. Teng and Leading are about to power up their budget, which will allow them to invest $30 million in technology over the next five years. Part of that funding comes from the very recent sale of Leading Quality Assurance (LQA), a joint venture program that carries out inspections for hundreds of hotels worldwide.

“We sold it for $24 million, and our 55 percent came out to be a little over $13 million,” Teng tells Luxury Travel Advisor. “That was a milestone in the sense that now we’re completely out of joint venture investments and other businesses. It was a big payday in terms of the money we generated.” That funding will be coupled with revenue from Leading’s new business model, which requires a down payment from members. “Even though we run [Leading] as a break-even business, this will generate $2 million a year in free cash flow,” notes Teng, reiterating, “We’re going to have $30 million to invest in technology in the next five years. We have never had that kind of resource. It’s a huge milestone.” Expanding on the company’s structure, Teng explains: “Leading is 100 percent owned by 65 percent of its members. They elect the governance of the company, and that makes us unique because we are not a for-profit company. We operate at a break-even and reinvest everything back to the company, which means I have zero cost of capital, and we’re very aligned with our owners and customers. It is 34

a two-edged sword to have your customers as your owner because you don’t have a lot of pricing power. They don’t want you to be so successful in generating revenue from them. But overall, it’s a real blessing.” Leading’s landscape has changed dramatically since Teng took the reins in 2008. Teng says his first milestone was the acceptance of the five-year business plan he presented to Leading’s board of directors on the 99th day of his tenure. “It was a business plan around fixing the company from a quality standpoint, from a revenue-generation standpoint and from the standpoint of our relationships with our hotel members. It was also about fixing the joint venture distractions,” he says, referring to the brand extensions past management had launched, which created entities such as Leading Group Sales for meeting planners, Leading Marketing Services, Leading Financial Services and Leading Quality Assurance. The next milestone came in 2013 when the five-year plan wrapped up. The results? “We drove revenue growth at twice the rate of market growth for that period of time.

One reason we were able to achieve this was that we were underperforming; we were be able to recover in a fairly difficult period of time, during the recession.” Leading’s quality scores went up from 78 percent in 2009 to 85 percent in 2013, based on LQA inspections. Over that time, all of the joint ventures except for LQA were eliminated or incorporated into Leading’s core business. “We reinvested in everything, from the directory to the brand logo and we reinvented the Leaders Club,” says Teng. Over Teng’s tenure, Leading’s membership changed quite a bit. When he joined, there were about 480 hotel members; two-thirds of those hotels are no longer part of the portfolio. “The composition has changed a lot,” asserts Teng. “The quality of the portfolio is significantly better than what it was.” He says insights as to what makes a hotel a successful “Leading Hotel” were also put in to effect. “We found that the business model of The Leading Hotels of the World really fits well with true individually branded hotels. We also found that it works really well with fam-

ily ownership versus institutional ownership and also hotels with other chain affiliations.” He points to the fact that 88 percent of Leading Hotels are family-owned and have been so for generations. “Our chairman, Andrea Kracht, is the sixth generation proprietor of Hotel Baur au Lac in Zurich,” he notes. “The Baur au Lac has been in his family for 160 years. That’s a long time.” Portfolio Profile Teng says Leading’s portfolio tends to skew half resort versus city hotel and that the average number of hotel rooms has gotten smaller (down to an average of 145), although rooms are getting larger in the newer hotels and color palettes are getting lighter for hotels that are renovating. “Guests are very understanding of historic properties because they realize you can’t really change things, but more and more customers have homes that are very spacious and when they travel, they like to have a similar experience,” he says. “We’re down to about 145 rooms per hotel on average and most hotels only have a single affiliation with us now,” says Teng, noting ownership is still predominately in Europe although inroads are being made in Asia. Who owns the hotel you’re staying in makes a difference, says Teng, particularly as it relates to customer experience. “The chain brands are great but in the sense of global consistency, they tend to move their managers around. These managers know the brand system very well, but they don’t know much about the local market, the destination market. Our hotels are mostly family-owned and the family tends to hire managers that know something about the local market. There’s affinity for that, an ‘I know your family’ kind of thing,” he says, adding that local managers relate better with local employees and so those employees feel more at home delivering that experience. The result? “Customers get that authentic local experience,” says Teng. While grande dames and iconic properties might immediately come to mind when you think of The Leading Hotels of the World, new-builds are most certainly welcomed into the system. “We have made a conscious effort to look for hotels that represent a newer, younger view toward luxury,” says Teng. “The Greenwich Hotel [in New York] is a great example of that. It’s not the traditional grand

www.luxurytraveladvisor.com

European hotel. What we find is that the definition of luxury is now much broader. There’s a desire for a certain casualness; there are a lot of people who do not like a formal setting. Café Royal in London is a good example of a more contemporary interpretation of luxury. It’s reflected in the design. It’s reflected in their services. It’s reflected in their staff. For us, it’s also a way to reach the younger generation in terms of customers.” At the same time, Teng is careful not to classify the younger Millennial generation as all wanting the same things. “We don’t just look at age groups, we look at the frame of mind, how people see the world. We see more and more that people are interested in a casual lifestyle, but are still very elegant,” notes Teng. As a result, Leading is broadening its portfolio to include hotels that present themselves with a more modern twist. Some could argue this makes the standards that Leading requires of its hotels even more important and Teng says that today, 80 percent of the company’s standards are based on service rather than the facilities. Those standards will continue to evolve to include the emotional intelligence employees use to

assess their customers’ needs. Emotional intelligence could mean that before hotel staff answers a guest’s question in a standard manner, they’ll consider first who is asking the question, says Teng. “That is an individualized approach. One can argue, ‘Well, that’s a standard.’ Well, no. A standard approach would be to respond to that question the same way every time. That’s called consistency. The service strategy of not answering the question until you know who is in front of you is a very individualized approach and it calls for a certain amount of discretion and a discernment that the standard approach doesn’t take.” And while some might simply call that empowering the employee, Teng argues that it’s really about individualizing the experience for each customer. “That’s going to be a lot harder to deliver on than delivering on the standards,” Teng says. It’s also important to note the context in which the question is being asked. “Someone asking a question who seems to be in a rush is very different from somebody who seems to have all the time in the world,” he notes. “We’re in the process of developing a certain theme as to what our service strategy is and

then developing the execution of that at our hotels as well as at our corporate office. It’s an exciting time. I think it will help us continue to differentiate and execute all these individualized experience spaces, but it’s not easy.” Along these same lines, Teng feels that too much attention has been paid to the consumer’s booking channel than to the consumer themselves. “It’s important to get back to where they’re coming from, why they are traveling and where they want to go. Probably more importantly, what’s the experience they’re looking for? That’s the critical part that in the world of booking channels we start to lose sight of,” says Teng. “We’re trying to help our hotels refocus on their long-term success in terms of what experience people are looking for and how we can deliver that to them individually. That’s a critical part of what we need to do. It’s not that we don’t need to compete in terms of the booking channels, but there’s just too much noise dominating all the conversation.” A very important distribution channel to Leading is the luxury travel advisor market because in the five-star market it’s all about expertise selling, says Teng. “Luxury travel advisors know their customers. If you think about it, a travel agent is not part of our sales force, they are an agent for their principals. A travel agent is acting on behalf of their clients’ best interests. They know their likes and dislikes and they are trying to match them up with what’s best for them. We should never forget that. We serve these agents by presenting them with our offerings so that they can choose what’s best for their principals.” 36

LUXURY TRAVEL ADVISOR | SEPTEMBER 2017

An Unlikely Candidate When Ted Teng got a phone call from a headhunter 10 years ago who said they were looking for a CEO for The Leading Hotels of the World, his reply was a tad sarcastic. “Well, I’m not sure I’m the right hotelier for The Leading Hotels of the World,” was his reply. “To tell you the truth, I don’t own a Brioni suit. I probably couldn’t order wines in your restaurants and wouldn’t know the silk content of your wallpaper.” Teng says the headhunter had a similar sense of humor and replied, “Don’t worry, Ted. We have plenty of people like that.” He told Teng Leading was looking for someone to lead from the business perspective, to bring the company into the future. That intrigued Teng, who had gone to Cornell Hotel School and worked for Sheraton for 14 years in North America, Hawaii and Hong Kong. He left to join Westin when it was still an independent company, and ran its AsiaPacific division for two years. When Westin merged with Starwood he ran Starwood’s Asia-Pacific region and then returned to the United States to run Wyndham International out of Dallas when Wyndham was still a real estate company. When Wyndham was sold to Blackstone, Teng took a few years off and was contemplating starting his own business when he got the call about Leading. From the beginning, Teng knew where he could contribute and where he would need to learn. He had a global perspective, knew plenty about chain brand strategies and sales and marketing and distribution. “What I didn’t know very well was the luxury segment and about independent hotels and the European business,” he says.

In the end it all worked because he came in without a playbook; rather he took time to study the company and ask a lot of questions. “What I got was the benefit of very generous hotel members and staff who shared with me the things that they were proud of, things that made them happy and also things that they were puzzled about; that they didn’t understand and concerned them. I got very good feedback very early on and that very rich feedback allowed me to develop the fiveyear business plan pretty quickly.” The timing was interesting. Teng joined Leading on September 1, 2008, and two weeks later, Lehman Brothers went bankrupt and the U.S. economy began sinking fast. Ever the optimist, Teng decided, “Well, there’s nowhere but up now.” Coming up on 10 years later, Teng says Leading has been a remarkable experience. “The hotels are amazing,” he says. “When you’re sitting on the veranda of the Villa d’Este, looking at Lake Como and thinking about the Romans who used to vacation there…we have many, many places [like that].” And while the facilities are incredibly enjoyable, Teng says the experience that’s been the most enriching is spending time with Leading’s hoteliers. “There’s no question in my mind that these are true artists,” he tells Luxury Travel Advisor. “They’re creators. They’re inventors and passionate, committed to the business and totally focused on delivering the customer experience. They’re different.” As someone who has spent a lot of time with chain brands, Teng is the first to say they’re very efficient, and deliver on their set standards, but at the end of the day, there is nothing like the independent hoteliers in the Leading portfolio. “They are beautiful human beings. They are hundreds of different personalities. Sometimes it is like herding cats, but it’s okay. That’s what makes them great at what they do. They’re noncompliant. They’re not about being the same. They want to be different. That’s the beauty of it. “Our job is not to rein them in and control them,” says Teng. “Our job is to let them loose, but build a framework around them to support them.” Bottom line? “[The experience of being with The Leading Hotels of the World] has been way beyond what I thought was possible,” says Teng. g

hef Jean-Georges Vongerichten has made his return to London, opening a new restaurant at The Connaught. The restaurant, Jean-Georges at The Connaught, overlooks Mount Street in the heart of the Mayfair neighborhood and offers informal dining in a relaxed, contemporary setting. This move marks Vongerichten’s return to the Maybourne Hotel Group, as he previously operated Vong at The Berkeley, which closed at the end of 2002. We hear the menu at the new restaurant is inspired by Vongerichten’s training in French cuisine with a mélange of Asian flavors, though he also offers his personal take on British classics such as fish and chips and traditional afternoon tea. The menu also reflects his farm-to-table approach, which is similar to that at his New York restaurants, including The Mark Restaurant & Bar at The Mark Hotel, ABC Kitchen, The Mercer Kitchen in SoHo and, most recently, abcV, a vegan eatery. The breakfast menu at Jean-Georges at The Connaught comprises healthy morning shakes, acai bowls and dosa, a type of pancake typically eaten in India. He also serves truffle scrambled eggs, French brioche toast and the full English breakfast. Lunch and dinner offerings include egg toast and caviar,

crispy salmon sushi and the chef ’s legendary black truffle and fontina pizza. Top Tip: The pizza can be ordered for takeout — a first for the restaurant. Design-wise, French artist Jean-Michel Othoniel has enhanced the restaurant’s windows with stained glass so that the space will be bathed in rich hues of orange and gold as sunlight streams into the restaurant. Nice touch! Jean-Georges at The Connaught will serve breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner throughout the day, seven days a week. In other London news, the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park London is undergoing a multimilliondollar makeover, which is scheduled to be completed next Spring. JETSET REPORT APPLE CIDER, PUMPKINS, SWEATERS AND SPICE LATTES will soon be de rigeur for many of us. Whether you’re embracing the chill or escaping to somewhere sunny to pretend it’s still summer, these eclectic items should be on your radar.

Personal Fashion Finally, the best season for clothes is here and we say Burberry’s Kensington Long Trench Coat is on our list of must haves. The weatherproof gabardine works for any weather autumn may throw your way. The best part? You can get it monogrammed on the inside, truly making it yours. And what better to pair your coat with than a cashmere scarf made on a traditional loom (you can add your initials on these, too!).

START YOUR DAY RIGHT Perfect for keeping your coffee hot en route to work (or even a brisk hike in the fall or winter), the Contigo Autoseal West Loop will be the last travel mug you ever need. While we love the playful designs, the best parts are the specs — it will keep drinks hot for five hours, it automatically seals to prevent spills and leaks, and pops open with only one hand. So forget the paper cups and move into the 21st century of coffee mugs. Find one at gocontigo.com. 42

THE ALL-INONE SHOE

Whether you’re at home enjoying the foliage or out traveling the world, make sure to carry one of these cameras with you. Both the Sony RX1R II (right) and Leica D-Lux Explorer Kit (below) are fantastic options for travelers: the compact cameras are lightweight and shoot full-frame photos. Each camera varies a little but we loved them both too much to exclude the other. Find out which you prefer and start snapping.

Looking out for all the male travelers out there, Tod’s Gommino leather driving shoes are ideal for luxury jetsetters. It’s a timeless design and available in a multitude of colors, making it the epitome of the casual-yet-sophisticated look. Despite the name, they’re just as good for walking around the city or hopping on a plane (making TSA lines a breeze) as they are for driving. Want another option? STYLE FILE

JESSICA RENSHAW was just

named Virtuoso’s Rising Star. We caught up with her just days after she received the prestigious recognition.

Dishing With Jessica Renshaw

T

he luxury travel trends we’re seeing in 2017 might not be trends at all. Concepts like health and wellness, sustainability, adventure and authentic experiences may be here to stay — at least that’s how Renshaw Travel’s Jessica Renshaw sees it. “I prefer not to use the word ‘trend’ as it means that something is here today and gone tomorrow,” she says. As the recipient of Virtuoso’s 2017 Rising Star award, a specialist in holistic health and wellness and co-creator (along with her sister, Carly) of The Renshaw Wellness Collection, Jessica may have a better grasp of the “trend” than most. “It may seem like a trend right now as many hotels are adding their concept of a wellness program, but health and wellness is not a trend,” Renshaw says. “The support of many wellness programs in the tourism industry, I believe, is a

44

global shift in consciousness… [However], wellness hotels like Rancho La Puerta and Canyon Ranch have been around for decades; so that concept has always been available but more now than ever people want to slow down and reconnect to what is important to them. People want to feel alive and well and I wouldn’t say that’s a trend!” Regardless of where Renshaw is traveling, she makes sure she always has a little bit of wellness on-hand: one item she always has in her suitcase is an herbal apothecary medical kit, made of immune-supporting tinctures, herbal balms and supplements — all put together on her own. “Travel is taxing on the body and it is important for me to know I have some immune support if I need it,” she tells us. It’s a great idea, especially when you consider that she’s off traveling to places like the High Canadian Arctic. “I am currently enamored with the polar regions,” Renshaw says.

LUXURY TRAVEL ADVISOR | SEPTEMBER 2017

Most recently, she stayed at a family-owned-and-operated lodge on an uninhabited island at 74 degrees north latitude along the Northwest Passage. “For six weeks in the summer, the beluga whales congregate here. I was able to sit on the riverbank next to hundreds of beluga whales while they played and rubbed their bellies on the rocks,” she says. While she told us she wouldn’t travel for a specific food or restaurant, she absolutely would return to a destination for a specific hike, trek, swim, or hot spring. Fortunately, the lack of a brand name in these destinations doesn’t scare her off. In fact, it’s not so much about the name on the building as it is the way she’s treated when she’s inside that makes the difference. “What I look for in a hotel is a genuine and hospitable staff,” Renshaw says. “How did they go above and beyond? How did they make me feel? If I feel welcomed, taken care of and that I

am recognized by my name not a number, then that will be an incredible stay for me. It is all about the people!” Renshaw recently stayed at La Réserve Paris Hotel and Spa. Upon arrival, the doorman opened her taxi door and greeted her by name. “It sounds like such a simple thing but it makes the world of a difference to know that the hotel has done some background research and is truly there to welcome you into their home regardless if you show up in a Bentley or a taxi,” she says. And if you’re looking for something to add to your book list — perhaps to help get in touch with your wild side — Renshaw suggests “Becoming Wild: Living the Primitive Life on a West Coast Island” by Nikki van Schyndel. It’s the tale of an urban woman who spends nearly two years living off the land in the Broughton Archipelago in the Great Bear Rainforest of British Columbia, Canada. — Matt Turner

Rancho Valencia

Jim Strong of Strong Travel recently escaped to Rancho Valencia with his wife, Kay, for some much-needed R&R. Here’s his report of this California retreat.

T

here was a great deal of consideration to my long-anticipated vacation with my wife. Based upon my workaholic personality, it was an unheard of two weeks out of the office. But it was necessary to com-

bat the stress levels created by the demands of the job. Our prerequisites for this trip were: a destination that is within a short direct flight; has an inviting climate; a great hotel room with outdoor space; a nurturing wellness program that included tennis; and, most of all, served great food and had a fun bar (there was the added need to provide an environment for my wife’s vibrant personality). We considered many exceptional locations such as The Ranch at Malibu, The Golden Door, Ojai, Canyon Ranch, Miraval, along with many others. We ended up in heaven at Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa in Rancho Santa Fe, CA. RANCHO VALENCIA’S

Mark Phillips (left) is shown here with Jim and Nancy Strong.

From the moment of arrival after our flawless American Airlines flight from the oppressive heat of Dallas to our departure 14 days later, it was a trip of many firsts and rediscovered energy. The pre-arrival experience was pleasantly easy, which led to an amazing adventure procured by many team members at the resort. Mark Phillips, the director of sales, was the lead contact at the hotel, and he, along with Kristi Dickinson, the spa director, paved the way for our experience. We were given a Valencia Suite, Room No. 117, which has a tremendous level of privacy in its 1,300 square feet of living space and almost equal outdoor space. The two fireplaces (one inside and one outside), along with the hot tub, were put to very good use. The complimentary minibar was restocked everyday with delivery of fresh juices to our front door each morning. The bedroom and the lavish bathroom were so comfortable that it was difficult to leave the room. While the resort is tucked into a beautiful setting about three miles from the ocean, we never felt isolated as the house Porsche Spyder was always available (for complimentary use) to explore the area. And explore we did, from the seaside towns of Del Mar and

La Jolla to the wonderful fireworks display on the 4th of July at Aviara. Most of all, we enjoyed staying within our Rancho Valencia home and viewing all the locals who came to enjoy the Veladora Restaurant or the alwayshappening Pony Room. Our daily schedule started with yoga at 7:45 a.m., with either a private instructor or a group; all of which presented challenges for my inflexible limbs. After yoga, we strolled to our al fresco breakfast, where the Maître D’ Nicole Cuneo waited with a smile. With the help of our personal nutritionist, plus Executive Chef Jarrod Moiles and F&B Director Simon Harris, the resort created a wellness-focused menu for us to be applied to all meals. This enhanced our dining experience tenfold: we were satisfied and impressed with each meal. Tennis was next on the agenda with coaching provided by the resident pro, Robin White. Later, we were off to the gym for time with our personal trainer, Stacy. The midday sun then beckoned us to the spa pool to be looked after by the young team serving a select few guests in the tranquil setting. We ended our day on the massage tables before cleaning up and heading to the Pony Room for liquid refreshments and a light snack, always greeted by the bubbly personality of the Maître D’ Hailey Isaacs. We repeated this with excitement each day for two weeks. The physical results of which are still noticeable, but the personal outcome has been the best part. I can say that Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa was the right choice for us thanks to its warm embrace and personalized attention in a casual, intimate setting. — Jim Strong

JUST BACK

Magical Ireland Lara Leibman, executive vice president of Frosch, covered a wide swath of Ireland on a recent trip, and is back with these insider details.

LARA LEIBMAN (left) spent time learning how to engage a hawk at Ashford Castle, which reopened in 2015 after a two-year, $70 million restoration.

A

s my Aer Lingus flight descended into Shannon, the most extraordinary landscape came into sight. This was just my first glimpse of the vivid and myriad hues of green that exist in this beautiful country. While I had been to Dublin previously, I’d decided to explore the Irish countryside this time, especially as it was summertime and the weather was bound to be warmer. Brendan Vacations, a preferred Frosch partner, ensured that each day featured something special that now serves as a lasting memory. The contributions of my driver, a member of Brendan’s chauffer / guide service, played a large role in the success of my trip. His knowledge of Irish history was impressive and I was very comfortable throughout the lengthy drives that are an integral part of seeing the Irish landscape. My first stop was Ashford Castle in County Mayo, which has witnessed an enormous change. Once owned by the Guinness family, the castle was bought in 2013 by the Tollman family, which owns Red Carnation Hotels. The company reopened its doors in April 2015 after a two-year, $70 million restoration; it also added a cinema, billiards room and cigar terrace. The Cottage is secluded and romantic for a couple looking for a getaway. Following its renovation, Ashford Castle is certainly one of the most luxurious resorts in the world. The estate has one of the largest equestrian centers in the country; there’s also fishing on Lake Corrib and Ireland’s first school of falconry. Tree climbing, ziplining, clay-pigeon shooting, archery, cycling, horse

48

and carriage rides, horseback riding, wine tastings, hiking and kayaking are just a few of the other activities available, in addition to its spa. I had the most unbelievable experience with my trained hawk, Inka, as I learned how to engage her so she would land on my arm in search of little morsels of food. With three restaurants to try, there was no need to go off-property. The food was delicious at George V Dining Room, Cullen’s at the Dungeon and Cullen’s at the Cottage. From Ashford Castle, I set out to Connemara, a terrain that is wild, rocky and grassy with the Twelve Bens mountains and a lake in the background. There were sheep grazing everywhere, and stone walls and

houses with pretty Irish gardens dotted the landscape. I visited a lovely little town called Clifden, which is also the only town in Connemara. From Connemara, I went to Kylemore Abbey and its Victorian Walled Garden in County Galway. Kylemore is home to a community of nuns of the Benedictine Order who came in 1920 after their Abbey in Belgium was destroyed in WWI. They settled at Kylemore and opened a boarding school for girls and restored the Abbey, Gothic Church and Garden. Today, 12 nuns remain in residence, but the school has closed. As directors of the Kylemore Trust, these Benedictine nuns continue with their

THE RING OF KERRY (above left) in County Kerry is a 106-mile tourist trail that runs through some of the best scenery in Ireland. THE CLIFFS OF MOHER (left) are located at the southwestern edge of the Burren region in

County Clare. They rise to a height of 702 feet and extend to five miles over the Atlantic Ocean. BALLYFIN (here) reopened as a five-star hotel in County Laois after years of renovation. Spread over 614 acres, the hotel has just 20 rooms.

daily life of work and prayer, supervising the administration, business, farming, handmade crafts and welcoming guests. It is a beautiful spot to visit for tea or lunch. In County Galway, I also stopped at Moran’s by the Weir for some Galway Bay oysters, chips, fish chowder and prawns. Ireland has some of the best fresh seafood, and I certainly had my fill on this trip. After lunch, I strolled through Salthill, a quaint seaside town just outside Galway City. Next was the Cliffs of Moher in County Clare. The cliffs rise to a maximum height of 702 feet and extend to five miles over the Atlantic Ocean on the western seaboard of County Clare. Ireland’s largest surfing wave

www.luxurytraveladvisor.com

is at the base of the cliffs called “Aileen’s” by surfers and is featured in surf movies “Sea Fever” and “Waveriders.” As it had been a bit chilly and windy at the Cliffs, I popped into Dromoland Castle in County Clare for a spot of tea on the way back to Ashford Castle. Located eight miles from Shannon Airport, Dromoland is another beautiful castle in Ireland, set on the shores of Lough Dromoland and surrounded by 450 acres of scenery. Saying goodbye to Ashford Castle was difficult, but it was time to move on to Killarney. The Ring of Kerry in County Kerry has 106 miles of beautiful scenery. The weather held up, which allowed me to fully absorb the blues of the sky and sea, combined with the different shades of green in the countryside and forest along the way. During the drive, I also saw picturesque towns like Kenmare (population: 1,500) and Sneem (population: 500). My guided hike through Killarney Park was another highlight. From a hike up to the Torc Waterfall or Torc Mountain to visiting the little beach, taking a boat ride across the lake or a ride in a jaunting car (Killarney Park’s version of a horse and carriage ride), the beautiful park has something to appeal to everyone. Breathing the fresh air during our two-hour hike was invigorating; I only wish I’d allocated more time to be in the park. While based in Killarney, I recommend staying at Killarney Park Hotel, which is centrally located in the town. The Dingle Peninsula was another highlight. Dingle (population: 1,500) has the largest number of pubs per head of population in any town. It’s a fishing village where

I had some more wonderful seafood (mussels and salmon), which I topped off with some of the best homemade ice cream at Murphy’s. As I was in Ireland, I felt it was most appropriate to try two flavors, Bailey’s and honeycomb; both delicious. En route to Dublin, I stopped for a quick visit to Blarney Castle in County Cork. Alas, I did not wait in the long line to kiss the stone, but if this is a “must see / do” for you, get there at the crack of dawn to line up. Driving the town of Ardmore brought me to a delightful hotel, Cliff House Hotel. This Relais & Châteaux property is located in County Waterford. All 36 rooms have sea views; many have terraces or balconies. I don’t think I’ve ever had such wonderful sticky toffee pudding as I had that day for lunch at Cliff House; no wonder the hotel has a Michelin Star restaurant. After long drives and exploring the countryside, nothing was better than a stay at this warm, cozy property where you can sit by the rocks or on the terrace and read a book as you gaze out at the sea. In Dublin, the National Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin was on my list, along with a drive to Howth Head for the spectacular views of Dublin Bay and the Dublin Mountains. My stay at The Westbury could not have been nicer, with its central location on Grafton Street, all the best shopping is nearby, as well as some great restaurants. My final stop was Ballyfin in County Laois, which only opened as an exclusive hotel in May 2011 after years of restoration. With only 20 rooms, Ballyfin has beautiful art and furnishings. Set amidst 614s acres, it is remote and peaceful and was the perfect ending to my journey. — Lara Leibman SEPTEMBER 2017 | LUXURY TRAVEL ADVISOR
