DISCOVER

OJAI MONTHLY THE GREAT RE-RAVELING

Bret Bradigan

‘‘In our modern urban civilization, multitudes of our people have been condemned to urban anonymity — to living the kind of life where many of them neither know nor care for their neighbors. This course of urban anonymity ... is one of eroding destruction to the foundations of democracy. For although we profess that we are citizens of a democracy, and although we may vote once every four years, millions of our people feel deep down in their heart of hearts that there is no place for them — that they do not ‘count.’’ — Saul Alinsky What Alinsky, the burr in the saddle of elites and establishment figures everywhere, and author of the ur-text ‘‘Rules for Radicals,’’ was talking about in the 1960s applies even more today, as we each hunker down in our silos of confirmation and selection bias, talking past each other in our social-media fueled isolation. Even in Ojai. Back away from those Facebook pages for a minute and ask yourself if you are being the best version of yourself, or does the low-consequence environment turn you into someone you don’t even recognize? Why are the worst among us filled with certainty? The pandemic, of course, made it even worse. When we no longer gather together, even if only to clap eyes on each other, we drift apart. And it will take years to put all the pieces back together. There are glimmerings. After a two-year hiatus, the Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament will return April 20th to the 24th. The Playhouse Theater, once open, will again become a gathering place, with a new creative juice behind it. The Rotary Club of Ojai’s ‘‘Taste of Ojai’’ event is switching up this year on April 10th, hosting it in Libbey Park with live music and walking tours to sample our astonishing diversity of restaurants and art galleries. The Art Center has re-opened live shows, and live music has returned to The Vine. We have two thriving Farmers Markets, where people bump up against each other like molecules in a chain reaction of community and ideas. In the Spring issue of our sister publication, Ojai Quarterly, Mark Lewis writes a masterful account of Ojai at a similar period, in 1947, after World War II when Southern California was beginning to metastasize like a cancer cell and Ojai was vulnerable to freeways and massive housing developments. It didn’t happen and a big reason were cultural events like the Ojai Music Festival being created, the Ojai Valley Inn became a proper resort and ‘‘The Ojai’’ resumed. People came to regard Ojai as worth preserving. Let’s hope they do at this critical crossroads as well. But in the meantime, be nice to each other. It costs nothing but means a lot.

Super Food, Super Family

ROLLE FAMILY

Visitors and locals cannot miss BoKU as they enter Ojai on the 33… the name itself is intriguingly exotic… the owners are poster children for healthful food with a desire to “make a positive difference for as many people as possible with the healing power of organic super food.” Co-owner Lynn Rollé says she dreamt the name and the logo, and to her and her husband, Reno Rollé, it means “Love Life.” 12

OM — March 2022

INSIDE BOKU SUPERFOODS

BoKU Superfoods has been around for 15 years as an online source of plant-based food with natural ingredients grown in mineral-rich soil. The food is then dried into a power powder that encapsulates its exceptional nutritional strength and supports health and well-being.

spirulina blue cheese and tomato; or the super BLT, where one of the world’s classic sandwiches is made vegan by using a dehydrated strip of zucchini marinated in paprika, Applewood-smoked salt and maple that mimics a crispy piece of bacon.

Now, Reno and Lynn have taken the next step of opening a café where Ojaians can experience the super foods in healthful, vegan versions of favorite dishes.

As with many Ojaians, Reno and Lynn Rollé started their lives elsewhere. He was born in Mt. Vernon, New York to Robert R. Rolle, a janitor, and Dolores, a hardworking housewife who raised five children and eventually became a successful realtor. Lynn was born in Wilkes Barre, PA, and raised in Bensalem (a suburb of Philadelphia) by farmer Carter Alexander Bache and mother, Marie.

How about a vegan Mac & Cheese made from gluten-free pasta and vegan cheese (my wife is a diehard cheese-aholic and she loved it.) Or, a quesadilla made with jerk jackfruit that thinks it’s pulled pork. Or, a Cauli-Power Salad or Wrap, made with hempseed crusted cauliflower, vegan

Reno and Lynn met in 1984 in New Hope, Pennsylvania, where Lynn’s family had a children’s clothing boutique. OM — March 2022

13

BOKU BUILDING ON WEST OJAI AVENUE

Reno, a sales rep at the time, showed Lynn some samples of imported clothing and eventually the two decided they were cut from the same cloth. In 1989, they were married in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, in what Reno says must have been one of the first “destination” weddings, with 80 guests from across the country. “The day started out rainy,” Reno remembers, “and just before the ceremony, the clouds parted, and a rainbow was cast from one side of the 17-acre property to the other. Pure magic.”

has published and co-authored several books, including a New York Times best-seller, “Natural Cures They Don’t Want You to Know About.” In 2003 he became CEO of a large TV marketing firm based in the United Kingdom and moved to Ojai, where the founder lived. With royalties from his book, he and Lynn worked to fulfill their dream of creating the world’s greatest superfood blend, with their kitchen in Ojai becoming the test lab.

Reno and Lynn have two children, Reno, Jr. and Ryann, and Reno, Jr. is actually the impetus for them to create superfoods. In 1995, they were looking for an alternative to prescription drugs for their son after he’d been labelled as having “attention deficit.” A doctor wanted to prescribe Ritalin, but with Lynn’s background in family farming, she and Reno explored more natural alternatives. A naturopath recommended “Super Foods,” and they ordered a blend by mail. “The green powder tasted awful (like fish food),” says Reno. But they mixed it with orange juice and convinced their kids to drink it. A few weeks later, a teacher happily told Lynn that the drugs were working on Reno, J. … his grades and behavior were vastly improved. “We knew he wasn’t taking drugs,” says Reno, “and that something else must have caused this positive change.” Thus, a passion for super foods was born.

“We found the most potent foods on Earth,” says Lynn, “but it turned out a lot of them were less than tasty. This is how BoKU born, to create superfoods that not only fueled and nourished the body but tasted delicious.” After working and experimenting for two years, Bokusuperfood was born.

“We fell into the world of plants, of learning about all the medicine our Earth had to offer,” says Lynn. “It led us on adventures around the world, meeting incredible people who were producing foods laced with magic and love.” Reno’s background reads like a “who’s who” of American entrepreneurship. (Lynn calls him a “serial entrepreneur.”) He founded the National Lampoon Home Entertainment division, invented a “Spin Fryer,” which removes more than 50 percent of saturated fats from fried foods, twice named Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst & Young, and 14

OM — March 2022

Lynn had learned basic business skills while working for Bernie and Mickey Somerman, who owned a gift shop/ gourmet/flower shop in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Mickey would invite Lynn on buying trips which instilled in Lynn a love of running “in and out of small shops wherever we travel. You find the most unique and coolest things!” Mickey was also a top-notch decorator, which “rubbed off” on Lynn. When Reno and Lynn moved to Ojai to set up the business, Lynn collaborated with South African Artist Peter Stuart. “I am so proud of how we transformed the building into what we had envisioned using recycled materials and some things from my house,” says Lynn. The Superfood products are sold online to 65 countries around the world, but the in-person cafe experience is found only in Ojai. At the café, visitors can also buy a number of products to take home. Another attraction is an electric vehicle charging station where you can energize your car while you’re energizing your body. Reno added a ramp access from the bike path to the BoKU café, and wants to bring back electric bicycle rentals. He’s also plan-

and coconut milk. This base is infused with various powders to create healthful smoothies such as “Pink Protein Moment,” “Ojai Kreamsicle,” (10 billion probiotics and 1060 percent of your daily vitamin C) or “Super Human,” a blend of 11 greens and sprouts and 13 berries and fruits with 30 grams of protein. This writer can attest that these scrumptious smoothies absolutely do NOT taste like fish food.

ning to landscape 1.5 acres in the back of the restaurant for events such as weddings, parties and discussion groups … all designed to give back to the community. “We love bringing the community together for healing events,” says Lynn. In addition to his work with BoKU, Reno is very much invested in the community, having worked with the Ojai Valley Youth Foundation and as a member of the Building Appeals Board.

Lynn feels that the BoKU story is continually being written. “We cannot wait to see where the future takes us,” she says proudly. For Ojaians along for the ride, all we can say is Merci BoKU!

Reno, Jr. and Ryann both work for the company. Reno, Jr. is the “master formulator” of the superfoods, and Ryann works remotely in administration from her home in North Carolina. All things considered, Lynn thinks she’s found her happy place. “As a ‘YaYa’ of three amazing grandchildren (one from Reno, Jr., two from Ryann) I think I finally found my passion in Café BoKU, influenced by my 15 years of being CEO of Boku International,” Lynn says. “I found the job of my dreams and a great sense of accomplishment … I want BoKU to be a household name.” And what’s a superfood café without super smoothies? BoKU’s have an earth milk base, a mixture of watermelon seed butter, jujubes, dates, bananas, Lucuma powder

Backyard Spring Cleaning Checklist By Aimee Jo Davis-Varela

It is that time of year again when we bring out the serious cleaning supplies and give our homes a good scrub down. While we are hunting down dust bunnies and cleaning ceiling fans, we tend to focus primarily on the interior of our homes. But, for those of us who enjoy spending plenty of time on the deck or around the fire pit, our outdoor living areas are just as important. If you would like to make this the year that you add your backyard to your annual spring cleaning routine, here is a handy checklist to get you started. 1. Clean your outdoor kitchen: Indoor kitchens get lots of attention during spring cleaning, but it is probably time to give your patio refrigerator and grill a good cleaning as well. Toss expired food, wipe up spills and get organized for easier entertaining. 2. Clean your eaves, fascia and gutters: Now is the perfect time to catch up on clearing your gutters, removing

20

cobwebs and cleaning your home’s fascia and trim. While you are doing this, keep an eye out for dry rot, evidence of termites or other damage, since it might also be time for some routine home maintenance or a termite inspection. 3. Declutter your yards: It is amazing how quickly our backyards can collect dog toys, flowerpots, pool toys or children’s toys. Take this opportunity to thin out your container garden, invest in a deck box for storing toys and move your gardening tools into your shed. 4. Organize your shed: Speaking of your shed, you probably should add that to your spring cleaning list as well. Now is the perfect time to clear out the cobwebs, get rid of unused items and get organized. Clearing out and organizing your shed just might free up some space for those extra flowerpots sitting on your patio, and it will definitely make your life easier when you need to find your rake or potting soil.

OM — March 2022

5. Scrub your trash and recycling bins: These receptacles can get very dirty very quickly, and this is one job that most of us take great pains to avoid. But dirty bins can be unsightly and may give off an odor that is not the first thing you want your guests to smell when they step onto your patio, so give them a good scrubbing this spring. 6. Clean your fire features: Patio fireplaces and fire pits tend to get a lot of use during winter around here, which means now is the perfect time for a good cleaning and safety check before the next entertaining season begins. 7. Clean patio furniture, cushions and dog beds: It just wouldn’t be spring cleaning if we didn’t address our textiles. Take this opportunity to launder cushion covers and dog beds or to splurge on new ones if your current ones are a bit worse for wear. Keep an eye out for patio furniture that might need a good cleaning or a new coat of paint as well.

FOUNDING FATHERS & MOTHERS While Edward Drummond Libbey is rightfully regarded among Ojai’s chief benefactors — having been behind the building of such Ojai landmarks as the Ojai Valley Inn, St. Thomas Aquinas Church (now the Museum), Post Office Tower and the Arcade — others have been very influential in shaping Ojai’s identity. Here’s a few: Annie Besant. Free-thinker, feminist and noted Theosophist. Though she only spent a few days in Ojai, she brought Krishnamurti to Ojai, and helped buy hundreds of acres of property in Ojai, (now the sites of Besant Hill School and, along with A.P. Warrington, the Krotona Center) which she called “the smiling vale.” She is considered one of the pioneers of introducing Eastern mystical thought to the West, and was an early advocate of India’s independence. and the labor movement. Jiddhu Krishnamurti. The spiritual teacher and writer, came to Ojai in 1922, sponsored by the Theosophical Society, though he later broke with that group (“The Leaderless Path.”) He gave talks to many thousands of people each year, in the Star Camps in the oak groves west of Ojai (now the site of Oak Grove School. He once held the Guinness Book of World Records for having spoken to the greatest number of people.

So he founded The Thacher School in 1887. Now one of the most prestigious preparatory academies in the country, its founding creed was “teach a boy to ride, shoot and tell the truth.” Also, in 1896, his brother William founded “The Ojai,” the country’s oldest amateur tennis tournament. Among Thacher’s more illustrious students were industrialist, aviator and film producer Howard Hughes and three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and novelist Thornton Wilder, who wrote his first play while a Thacher student.

She inspired two classic movies, Francois Truffaut’s “Jules et Jim,” and James Cameron’s “Titanic.” She attributed her longevity to “chocolate and young men.” Her autobiography was appropriately titled, “I Shock Myself.” Many of her distinctive, whimsical, luminous luster-glazed pieces are on display at her former home, now the Beatrice Wood Center, in upper Ojai.

The name “Ojai” is believed to be derived from the Ventureño Chumash word ‘awhaý, meaning “moon.” In 1837, Fernando Tico received a land grant and established a cattle ranch. Thomas A. Scott, who had financial success with oil and railroads, bought the Ojai Valley in 1864 for oil exploration. By 1868, Scott, through his agent Thomas Bard, began selling properties to homesteaders. By 1874, R.G. Surdam plotted out the town he would call Nordhoff, renamed Ojai in 1917. Ojai is about 90 miles northwest of Los Angeles and 30 miles east of Santa Barbara. The valley is about 10 miles long by 3 miles wide, surrounded by hills and mountains; the rare east-west orientation with a slight southward tilt gives the valley an extraordinary sun exposure; Ojai’s citrus and avocado crops are highly prized. This orientation also gives rise to Ojai as a spiritual destination. It was due to the resources and organizing energy of Ohio glass manufacturer Edward Drummond Libbey that Nordhoff was rebuilt and renamed Ojai, inspired by the City Beautiful Movement. By 1917, with the construction of the Arcade and Post Office Tower, the town took its present shape. The city’s self-styled nickname is “Shangri-La,” based on the story that Ojai was the backdrop (later left on the editing room floor) from the 1937 movie as the mystical sanctuary of James Hilton’s novel “Lost Horizon.” OM — March 2022

CHEF RANDY’S LIFE OF SPICE chili rellenos Chile rellenos, which translates to “stuffed chiles,” is one of Mexico’s most beloved dishes. They are traditionally made from whole poblano, pasilla, or Anaheim chilies that are stuffed with cheese, dipped in an egg batter, and fried until golden brown. During the 1800s, when the dish was originally invented, chile rellenos were stuffed with minced meat and didn’t have the fried batter layer. My version leaves out the meat and the fried batter. I think it is more nutritious. It is, without a doubt, super tasty and easier to make. Make the sauce ahead of time, and prep time is considerably reduced.

INGREDIENTS 4 large poblano peppers (whole with stems) 8 to 10 ounces Mexican queso fresco Relleno Sauce (see recipe below*) Mexican Crema (to drizzle) Pepitas (toasted for garnish) Cilantro (chopped for garnish) Randy Graham is a noted chef and writer and has been a lacto-ovo vegetarian for over 38 years. Chef Randy has written and published a series of seven cookbooks with original recipes developed over the period 1975 through 2020. He writes for the Ojai Quarterly, the Ojai Monthly, and the California 101 Travelers Guide. His vegetarian recipes are published in newspapers throughout Central California under the header, Chef Randy. He and his wife, Robin, live in Ojai, California, with their dog Cooper. Robin and Cooper are not vegetarians.

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Prepare a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray. Wash and dry the peppers. Place peppers on a sheet pan and place the pan in the middle rack—roast for 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and turn the peppers over. Return the peppers to the oven and roast for another 15 minutes or until tender. Remove the peppers from the oven and set them aside. Cut a slit in the peppers from the stem to the pointy end and, using your fingers, gently remove seeds. If the thin skins slip off, let them, but don’t worry about peeling them, especially poblanos. Their skins are quite thin so, leaving some of the skin is perfectly fine. Carefully stuff the peppers with the cheese. Pour half of the sauce into the prepared baking dish to coat the bottom. Place the stuffed peppers on

top of the sauce, seam side up. Pour the rest of the sauce over the peppers and cover with foil. Reduce the oven to 425 degrees and bake for 25 to 30 minutes. Remove from oven and uncover. Drizzle with Mexican crema. Garnish with pepitas and cilantro. Bring to the table while still hot from the oven. RELLENO SAUCE INGREDIENTS:* 2 tablespoons butter 1/2 yellow onion (fine diced) 1 green bell pepper (fine dice) 2 cloves garlic (minced) 1 cup vegetable broth 14 ounce can diced tomatoes 1/2 teaspoon Anaheim (red) chile powder 1/4 teaspoon chipotle chile powder 1 teaspoon Better Than Bouillon (no chicken base) 2 tablespoons flour (dissolved in 1/4 cup cold water) SAUCE DIRECTIONS: Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add onions, pepper, and garlic. Sauté for 4 minutes. Add vegetable broth, tomatoes (and their juice), chili powders, and bouillon. Stir to combine, reduce heat to low, and simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat. Stir in flour/water combination and cook for two minutes more.

TAXING TIME Why Homeownership Benefits Your Bottom Line

By Therese A. Hartmann

This last Saturday, I met with a firsttime homebuyer and his mother. The young man had gone to elementary school where my father had been the principal so I was particularly eager to help him. He asked some great questions with regard to his qualifications for buying but I noticed nobody had mentioned one of the biggest benefits of owning real estate outside of leveraging and building equity. I’m talking about the tremendous tax benefits that apply to anyone with a home loan! So, Scott, this article is for you and anyone interested in knowing more about what they can expect. The cool thing about mortgage interest deduction is that it reduces the amount you may owe to Uncle Sam. At the end of the year, you’ll typically receive a tax statement from your lender that shows interest you’ve paid over the year. This amount can be deducted. Other deductions include: • You can include interest paid for a home equity line of credit up to $100k but as the tax code changes regularly, it’s best to check with your tax expert. • Property taxes • Points you might have paid on your 28

loan • Home improvements for medical care This will be deductible on loans you used to purchase, build or renovate a property for primary and secondary homes only. Keep that in mind. Now, if you’re buying residential investment property, things are a little different. In general, investment properties do not have the immediate tax perks that you’ll get on a primary residence or vacation home. But you will be able to write off depreciation, repairs, utility expenses, management costs, cleaning, insurance, etc. This list isn’t definitive, of course, and shouldn’t be taken for professional tax advice. Still, it’s good to be aware so that when you speak to your tax preparer, you’ll be able to get them what they need to reduce your taxes. As I mentioned to Scott, it would behoove him to meet with his tax person to understand the benefits and implications of owning a home. It’s usually a happy surprise that’s in store! And call me if you need to get pre-approved and/or are interested in knowing steps towards home ownership. OM — March 2022
