WELCOME
The Ojai Valley has been settled for tens of thousands of years. According to Chumash elder Julie Tumamait-Stenslie (check out the Ojai Podcast, “Talk of the Town,” episode 64 for a lively and far-ranging discussion), “Anthropologists do not know for sure when the ancestors of the Chumash arrived in this area. Theories claim that they may have arrived somewhere between 12,000 and 27,000 years ago.” Respect the land and you will find why Ojai is known far and wide as a healing sanctuary.
No wonder Ojai’s reputation as a place of healing and health is so wide and deep. The village of Ojai itself began as a health and wellness resort.
Not long after Charles Nordhoff’s bestselling 1872 book, “California for Health, Pleasure and Residence,” was published, people with tuberculosis or asthma began to flock to Ojai to enjoy the warm, dry air.
Interestingly, Nordhoff had not visited Ojai at the time of the book’s publication, he extolled instead nearby Santa Barbara as a natural sanitarium. Many of those people who flocked to the seaside town found it too foggy and chill though.
Mark Lewis’ article about Ojai’s origins as a health and wellness destination in the Winter 2015 issue of Ojai Quarterly makes that origin story clear.
Not long after an entrepreneurial adventurer from Ventura named R.M. Brown tried to transform Matilija Hot Springs, eight miles north of town, into “the Saratoga of the West.” He built a road, built a hotel, paid for advertisements and opened for business.
Then, closer to Ojai, a farmer named W.S. McKee branched off into the resort business, opening his sanitarium near the intersection of Ojai Avenue and Gridley Road.
Next up was Abram Blumberg, attracted by an offer for free land

for anyone who would put up a hotel, and with an ailing wife himself, built a hotel on the current site of the Libbey Park Fountain. In fact, it was Catherine Blumberg who suggested the town be named “Nordhoff” after the author who had done so much to promote California’s healing sunshine.
Others opened in Matilija Canyon and with within three years of Nordhoff’s book, hundreds of people were flocking to Ojai as a place to “winter” and escape the harsh weather of the East Coast and Midwest. Blumberg’s Nordhoff Hotel was renamed Ojai Valley House and McKee’s sanitarium the Oak Glen
Cottages.
When Nordhoff, working on the second edition of his book in 1881, finally visited his namesake town, Lewis wrote: “Evidently he liked what he saw, or perhaps he was merely susceptible to flattery. In any event when the updated edition of ‘California for Health, Pleasure & Residence’ came out in 1882, it identified Ojai Valley House as ‘the best winter resort in Southern California.’”
One of those people who “wintered” in Ojai was an enterprising glass magnate named Edward Drummond Libbey, who loved Ojai’s healing environment so much he became
our foremost patron, organizing and building the Post Office Tower, the Arcade, St. Thomas Aquinas Church (now the Ojai Valley Museum) and the Ojai Country Club, now the Ojai Valley Inn, which is indeed well known as “the best winter resort in Southern California.” All seasons, actually.
Ojai’s origin as a spiritual haven, “a Shangri La,” may be dated to 1922, when Vitya Krishnamurti, suffering from tuberculosis, persuaded his brother, the Theosophist’s New World Leader, Jiddhu, to move to Ojai. While his brother tragically succumbed to his ailment not long after, Krishnamurti put down deep

roots, helping establish Oak Grove School, Happy Valley School (now Besant Hill School) and inspired many hundreds of people to move here, seeking their own health, wellness, peace, tranquility and inquiry.
The 1937 Frank Capra film, “Lost Horizon,” also used a scenic overlook in Ojai as the eponymous hidden valley as a stand-in for Shangri La, but that scene ended up on the cutting-room floor. Now the Ojai Valley continues to draw people from all over the world, from the Ojai Valley Inn to the hundreds of healers — masseuses and masseurs, chiropractors, watsu, bodywork, psychic and energy healing, acupuncture, personal trainers, therapists and counselors, spa treatments of all kinds, from hot stones to cryotherapy, our well-stocked and attended farmers’ markets among others.
It actually does take a village, as the African proverb holds. In our case, a particularly tight-knit village with a sturdy social infrastructure to create such riches of health and wellness.
Ojai’s reputation as a healthy place to live reminds some, including Dr. Russell Kun, owner of Evergeen Wellness, of the famed “Blue Zones,” where residents
often live past 100 years, in disparate places like Sicily, Ikaria, Greece and Okinawa, Japan.
When many towns the size of Ojai are losing their hospitals, our Ojai Valley Hospital is a shining example of what is possible when the people come together with a solid, reputable institution like Community Memorial Health Systems, expanding the number of beds and services with the new Continuing Care Facility. That’s fitting for a hospital that was built by its people and run by its people for its first 55 years. It’s an integral part of our community’s vibrant health.
Ojai’s influence on health and wellness extends well beyond its borders. The American Association of Retired Persons, with 38 million members, is the largest nonprofit organization in the world. And it began right here, through work of the indomitable educator Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, founder of the retirement home Grey Gables. She, along with five other people, at dinner in 1958 at the Ojai Valley Inn, drew up the basic foundations of this group. It grew from those six to more than 400,000 members in 1964 when it moved to larger quarters in Long Beach.
Chances are good that if you are visiting or living in Ojai, you are engaged on your own healing journey. We hope this guide helps you.

When asked what surprised him the most, His Holiness the Dalai Lama replied: “Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”

EAST MEETS WEST
26 2023 OJAI HEALTH & WELLNESS DIRECTORY
It may seem as if various healing practices are at odds or exclusive of each other. But according to a recent report from the National Cancer Institute, it’s not so. Traditional approaches are often enhanced and amplified by ancient and unorthodox treatments. While this article refers mostly to cancer, the same approach can be useful to a wide range of maladies.
This is not news to Ojai residents, where the village has long been a destination for seekers of health and wellness. In fact, Ojai has been a health and wellness destination at least since the 1870s, quite possibly for thousands of years prior for Chumash seeking the healing hot springs.
The NCI defines CAM, Complementary and Alternative Medicine, as including massage, acupuncture, tai chi, and drinking green tea and nutritional supplements and diets. These are often described by terms such as “natural,” “holistic,” “home remedy,” or “Eastern medicine.”
“People with cancer may use CAM to help cope with the side effects of cancer treatments, such as nausea, pain, and fatigue, comfort themselves and ease the worries of cancer treatment and related stress, feel that they are doing something to help with their own care, to try to treat or cure their cancer,” according to NCI, which has been around since 1937 and is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Integrative medicine is an approach to medical care that combines conventional medicine with CAM practices that have shown through science to be safe and effective. This approach
often stresses the patient’s preferences, and it attempts to address the mental, physical, and spiritual aspects of health,” the NCI article continues.
They define the dual approach as such: “Conventional medicine is a system in which health professionals who hold an M.D. (medical doctor) or D.O. (doctor of osteopathy) degree treat symptoms and diseases using drugs, radiation, or surgery. It is also practiced by other health professionals, such as nurses, pharmacists, physician assistants, and therapists. It may also be called allopathic medicine, biomedicine, Western, mainstream, or orthodox medicine. Some conventional medical practitioners are also practitioners of CAM.
“Standard medical care is treatment that is accepted by medical experts as a proper treatment for a certain type of disease and that is widely used by healthcare professionals. It is also called best practice, standard of care, and standard therapy,” the article explains.
While for difficult diseases such as cancer with many causes, both genetic and environmental, these alternatives approaches may seem unconventional, “Complementary medicine is meant to work alongide the more traditional approaches,” the NCI notes: For example, using “acupuncture to help lessen some side effects of cancer treatment.”
Part of the reluctance to advocate for these alternative approaches is that less research has been done, and they are often relegated to “folk medicine” or having originated in ancient Eastern practices. The divide between “Eastern” and “Western” medicine often leads to an “either or” approach, neglecting the ways in which
2023 OJAI HEALTH & WELLNESS DIRECTORY 27
IN OJAI, IT’S NOT ONE OR THE OTHER: COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE WORK TOGETHER FOR OPTIMAL HEALTH
each can enhance the effectiveness of the other.
The National Cancer Institute has been working to remedy the research gap. According to their press release, the NCI and the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) are currently sponsoring or cosponsoring clinical trials that test CAM treatments and therapies in people. You can find the list of current trials at www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/treatment/clinical-trials/cam-procedures
One example of a combined approach is using a special diet to treat cancer instead of cancer drugs that are prescribed by an oncologist.
NCI provides evidence-based Physician Data Query (PDQ) information for many CAM therapies in versions for both the patient and health professional.
Here’s a brief rundown of Complementary and Alternative Medicine methods, through five general approaches, with examples of each. Check out the listings in this Health & Wellness Guide for local practitioners.
MIND–BODY THERAPIES:
These combine mental focus, breathing, and body movements to help relax the body and mind. Some examples are:
Meditation: focused breathing or repetition of words or phrases to quiet the mind and lessen stressful thoughts and feelings; Biofeedback, by using special machines, the patient learns how to control certain body functions that are normally out of one’s awareness (such as heart rate and blood pressure); Hypnosis: a trance-like state in which a person becomes more aware and focused on certain feelings, thoughts, images, sensations or behaviors. A person may feel more calm and open to suggestion in order to aid in healing.
Yoga: An ancient system of practices used to balance the mind and body through stretches and poses, meditation, and controlled breathing:
Tai Chi: a form of gentle exercise and meditation that uses slow sets of body movements and controlled breathing imagery; Focusing on Positive Images in the mind, such as imagining scenes, pictures, or experiences to help the body heal; Creative Outlets: interests such as art, music, or dance.
BIOLOGICAL PRACTICES:
This type of CAM uses things found in nature. Some examples are vitamins: nutrients the body needs in small amounts to function and stay healthy; dietary supplements: Products added to the diet that may contain ingredients such as vitamins, minerals, and herbs, to name a few botanicals: plants or parts of plants. One type is cannabis, which was first approved for medical use in California in 1996, and Ojai has long been a forerunner in cannabis healing; Herbs and Spices such as turmeric or cinnamon.
BODY-BASED PRACTICES:
These are based on working with one or more parts of the body. Some examples are massage therapy: a therapy where the
28 2023 OJAI HEALTH & WELLNESS DIRECTORY
soft tissues of the body are kneaded, rubbed, tapped, and stroked; Chiropractic Therapy: A type of manipulation of the spine, joints, and skeletal system; Reflexology: a type of massage in which pressure is applied to specific points on the feet or hands, which are believed to match up with certain parts of the body.
ENERGY HEALING:
Energy healing is based on the belief that a vital energy flows through the body. The goal is to balance the energy flow in the patient. Some examples are Reiki: placing hands lightly on or just above the person with the goal of guiding energy to help a person’s own healing response; Therapeutic Touch: Moving hands over energy fields of the body or gently touching a person’s body
These are healing systems and beliefs that have evolved over time in different cultures and parts of the world.
Some examples are Ayurvedic Medicine: a system from India in which the goal is to cleanse the body and restore balance to the body, mind, and spirit. It uses diet, herbal medicines, exercise, meditation, breathing, physical therapy, and other methods.
Traditional Chinese Medicine: based on the belief that qi (the body’s vital energy) flows along meridians (channels) in the body and keeps a person’s spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical health in balance. It aims to restore the body’s balance between two forces called yin and yang.
Acupuncture is a common practice in Chinese medicine that involves stimulating certain points on the body to promote health, or to lessen disease symptoms and treatment side effects.
Naturopathic Medicine: a system that avoids drugs and surgery. It is based on the use of natural agents such as air, water, light, heat and massage to help the body heal itself. It may also use herbal products, nutrition, acupuncture, and aromatherapy.
“Tell your doctor if you’re taking any dietary supplements, even vitamins, no matter how safe you think they are. This is very important,” the NCI urges. Diet is also very important in any healing process. (The NCI urges cancer patients who want to use CAM should talk with their doctor or nurse.)
Here’s a few questions to ask:
What types of CAM therapies might help me reduce my stress and anxiety? Help me feel less tired? Deal with cancer symptoms and side effects, such as pain or nausea? Sleep better?
