CITIZENS CAME The story goes that Franklin Delano Roosevelt, shortly after his first election in 1932, was meeting with a group of labor leaders in the depths of the Great Depression. The leaders were trying to get FDR’s backing for various initiatives. Roosevelt told them: “I agree with you, I want to do it, now go out there and make me do it.”

What he meant is that getting the boss’ approval is only the first step. The real hard work came in convincing a weary and wary nation, a recalcitrant Congress and overcoming a determined opposition. If you really want to get something done, you’ve got to take responsibility for every step of the process. You’ve got to work so hard and with such conscientious dedication, that your leaders will have no choice but to either follow or get out of the way. Ferdinand Rollo-Ledrin said during the barricade movement in 1848, “There go my people. I must follow them because I am their leader.”

There is an attitude in Ojai that I hear expressed in various ways. Perhaps the most common is the rueful observation that the solutions to the problems of the day are obvious and simple and yet nothing is being done. You can find countless examples. People have great ideas, but then they think that merely telling someone in authority is all it takes to solve them. And so inevitably they become disenchanted and even cynical when nothing happens. What they don’t realize is that your dream dies with you, unless you can not only enlist others to help with the heavy lifting, but to see it across the finish line.

“What a bunch of idiots!” is a typical refrain. That may be true, but what that observation misses is that all of us are idiots at one time or another, on one issue or another. “It takes a great effort to see what is in front of one’s nose,” as George Orwell put it.

If the prior generations of people who have bequeathed us with the Ojai we know and treasure had thought that way, we’d be crisscrossed with freeways, housing developments and uranium and gypsum mines. Fully laden double-trailer trucks would be screeching past our schools while the final orchard of oranges was being bulldozed to make way for a McMansioned golf course development. We wouldn’t recognize this place.

There are plenty of local examples of organizations spawned to address looming threats: The Citizens to Preserve the Ojai or Stop the Trucks to name two.

My favorite example is that of Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, a retired school administrator (California’s first female high school principal), who saw a dire need: retired teachers could not afford health insurance. One of her former charges was living in a chicken coop in squalor. Dr. Andrus found that unacceptable. So she created an organization to provide that insurance and improve the well-being of these people who perform such an important role.

And so, one night over dinner in 1957 at the Ojai Valley Inn, with six people present, what would become the world’s largest nonprofit organization was born. From the AARP’s humble start housed at the Gables of Ojai, with hand-lettered membership cards, it now has 38 million members.

It didn’t happen because people like Andrus decided that she had a good idea and why didn’t those idiots in Washington or Sacramento or at Ojai’s City Hall get off their duffs and get it done. It happened because she made them.

On Saturday, September 7, the community is invited to come out for a rockin’ evening with DENNIS QUAID and The Sharks to raise funds for MakeA-Wish® Tri-Counties. Rock the Wish presented by Earl Minnis and Andrea Shaparenko will take place at the beautiful Topa Mountain Winery in Ojai, CA at 821 West Ojai Avenue and begins at 5pm. The event opens with local group Girls with Guitars featuring Cindy Kalmenson, Patricia Avis and Natalie Gelman followed by headliner, DENNIS QUAID and The Sharks at 6:30pm. The fun continues with an outdoor screening of The Rookie, starring Dennis Quaid at 8pm. This event is 21 and over will include local food trucks and wine by the glass specials.

Dennis Quaid and The Sharks, which specializes in “rock ‘n’ roll and countrysoul” have been performing in front of thousands of fans receiving rave reviews. Dennis is not just another actor turned rock star, he is a rock star and philanthropist as well.

Dennis Quaid is the lead singer and rhythm guitarist. He performs many original plus classic hits such as “Spill the Wine”, “Gloria”, and many more.

The Ojai Valley Inn’s Olivella restaurant will be serving in the Sponsor tent and long-time favorites like Bonnie Lu’s, Home Kitchen, Ojai Beverage Company, Mandala and Jim & Rob’s will be on hand with delicious creations & libations.

The Taste of Ojai is the Rotary Club of Ojai’s primary fundraising event of the year. Thanks to the help of our partnering sponsors and donors last year the Rotary Club of Ojai and its Educational Foundation awarded 25 sholarships to Ojai graduating seniors and nine community grants to charities in the Ojai Valley, all totaling over $125,000.

“I believe there’s a writer in every one of us,” said Ilona Saari, Literary Branch Chair. “We wanted to give people a chance not only to be creative, but disciplined, while we celebrate the Art Center’s 80 years of creativity in exactly 80 words!”

A panel of judges will select the winners in each category. Winners will be announced at an Art Center reception on Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. First, second, and third place winners in each category will receive a cash prize and will be asked to read their entries at the reception. Seven honorable mention writers will be chosen in each category, who will also have the honor of sharing their stories at the reception.

The Literary Branch seeks submissions with the following guidelines:

MIKE GAIDANO – Her Road to Oz

M

ichal (“Mike”) Gaidano neé Ferren originally from Oklahoma City, was eleven when her parents moved the family to Udall, Kansas where her father, Mack Ferren, a lightweight champion boxer and Purple Heart veteran of World War II was a Baptist minister. Educated at Oklahoma Baptist University and William Jewel College, Mack had graduated with a degree in education but “got the call” to use his degree to become a minister.

Mike’s mom, Doris Steenbock Ferren, a talented musician able to play most any instrument, was a typical minister’s wife and accompanied Mike’s father to various ceremonies such as weddings and funerals, and often did counseling for her husband’s parishioners while raising Mike and her two older sisters and brother.

Soon after she finished school, Mike began a career in savings and loan in El Dorado, Kansas, where the family had eventually moved, and where she met her first husband, a recent college graduate. They honeymooned in Scottsdale, Arizona and fell in love with the area. When her husband applied for a criminal justice program at Arizona State University and was accepted, they moved to Arizona.

Sadly, the marriage didn’t last and Mike found herself a single mom with a twoyear old daughter, Kelli. Without a job at the time, she and Kelli moved into a hotel room until her money ran out, then moved in with a friend until she was able to get back into banking. Toto, Mike’s not

in Kansas anymore. To keep a roof over her and Kelli’s head, Mike took on various “side” jobs, one of which was catering, which planted a seed that grew into a love for organizing and hosting parties and fundraisers, a winding yellow brick road she would follow for many years to come, although with many diversions along the way.

Mike’s first detour off the yellow brick road happened because of a career change … she got a job in the sales and marketing department at Bromar, Inc., the largest food brokerage firm in the U.S. at the time, where she called on buyers, specialty stores and distributors. (A food broker is an independent sales agent who works for food producers/manufacturers and buyers as they help sell food products to chain wholesalers, retailers, independent wholesalers and more.)

In 1988 she met Don Gaidano, the CFO

of Bromar who had come to Arizona from the corporate offices in Newport Beach for a company party in Phoenix.

Three years later they had a medieval wedding in a mansion in Laguna Beach and Don’s two sons, Brandon, 14 and Davin, 11 and Mike’s daughter, now 15, became a blended family living in Southern California. Mike’s “call” to volunteer kicked in when she jumped in at Kelli’s school with another mom to raise money for kids who couldn’t afford to go on school trips, as well as other fundraising ventures. Because of their efforts, they became “parents of the year.” She also spent time helping Don plan and organize corporate social events. Though she kept her toe in business by doing some consulting for small firms, her primary focus was on her new marriage and family.

After many years, Don left Bromar to become CFO for Horizon Foods, an organic food company, which he eventually took public. Mike and Don took another detour from Mike’s yellow brick road to Boulder, Colorado for Don’s new company … then to England … then back to Boulder.

In 2007, Kelli married in Santa Barbara where she had gone to college and Mike and Don spent the weekend in Ojai before going back to Boulder… but that yellow brick road kept leading them back to Ojai, a magical, technicolor valley where they cheered at the 4th of July parade, watched the fireworks and wandered the Arcade. It wasn’t long before they moved to the valley permanently. Mike

had found a fertile garden at the end of her yellow brick road and the seeds for organizing and hosting fundraisers and gatherings blossomed.

In the late ‘40s and ‘50s one of the most famous Washington D. C. citizens was Perle Mesta, a political hostess who put party-giving on the map as she held court for politicians, rich and infamous.

She was the inspiration for the Black Russian cocktail and the muse for Ethel Merman’s character in “Call Me Madam,” as well as the character of Dolly Harrison in Gore Vidal’s “Advise & Consent.” Rivaling Ms. Mesta’s hostess skills at the time was Elsa Maxwell with her renowned soireés for royalty and high society figures in New York and Europe, and for Hollywood moguls and stars in Los Angeles. Legend has it that Ms. Maxwell invented the scavenger hunt, a party plan that kept her guests hopping from one venue to another in their convertible coupes, searching for specific items to place at her feet.

Living in less frivolous times, Mike has become “today’s” version of these hostesses. Her specialty is party events with an aim to help the community.

Her opening night galas at the Ojai Art Center Theater have become a draw for folks to interact with cast members and fellow theater goers, making the theater more connected to the town, as well as parties for Ojai’s Annual Film Festival and the Art Center’s Great Art Theft fundraiser where you’ll often see Don at her side helping out.

Mike has also worked on fundraisers for the hospital, and hosted fundraisers for the theater and other nonprofits at Topa Mountain Winery. She is currently organizing a fundraiser for breast cancer awareness with Ojai Cares, scheduled for October 12th, and a gala fundraiser celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Ojai Art Center.

Mike’s yellow brick road seems endless, but the people of Ojai are fortunate that the road came to a stop in a town that some consider as awe-inspiring at that mythical land of Oz.

Seven Easy Home Improvement Projects for Fall

As the days get shorter and the nights get colder, it is time to start the transition from summer into fall. I know it is still way too hot to think about fall and winter entertaining, but now is the time to complete home improvements and maintenance tasks that will make your home function better and make your life easier. To get you started, here are seven projects that will help you prepare for the coming seasons.

1. Add gutter guards: Adding screens to your gutters makes them much easier to clean and helps you prepare for both the rainy season and fire season. If you plan on installing gutter screens yourself, be sure to clean your gutters first and choose the option that is right for you. If you have mostly larger debris, such as leaves, you can opt for less-expensive screens with wider holes.

If you have a lot of smaller debris, such as seed pods, go for a finer mesh. It will be more expensive but well worth it.

2. Complete roof repairs: If you haven’t yet noticed, local contractors are incredibly busy this year as they continue to help homeowners recover from the fire while also completing projects for other clients.

This means that if your roof needs to be repaired or replaced before the rainy season, now is the time to contact a local roofing company to get on the schedule.

3. Install hooks for hanging plants: 32

Deciduous trees will begin losing their leaves soon, which means your patio may become more exposed. If you need a bit more privacy through fall and winter, install hooks for hanging planters around your patio. As an added bonus, this will also add more color and visual interest to your outdoor entertaining area.

4. Hang string lights: This is a simple home improvement project that almost anyone can do without the help of a professional. This is one of the easiest, quickest ways to illuminate your outdoor living areas while also enhancing their visual appeal and creating a relaxing ambiance.

Options include stringing lights along the edge of your covered patio or pergola, wrapping them around the frame of a canopy, spreading them out between trees, or hanging them around the edge of a patio umbrella. If you need to use extension cords for this project, be sure to only use extension cords designed for outdoor use.

5. Add a canopy to your outdoor living area: If you do not currently have a covered patio or outdoor living area, it may be time to invest in an affordable canopy. Metal and canvas canopies start at around $300 (and go into the thousands), and handy homeowners will likely be able to do this project on their own. Assembly is required, and it is best to attach it to your patio or stake it in the ground to avoid OM — September 2019

6. Add a fire pit: Fire features are a quintessential part of fall entertaining and come in quite handy as the days shorten and the temperature cools. Depending on the type of fire pit you choose, this can be an easy, inexpensive project that consists simply of purchasing a portable fire pit, taking off the packaging, and setting it in place. Or it can be a more elaborate addition that requires plans, permits and a contractor. Either way, the end result will enhance the function or your outdoor living area and expand your options for entertaining in fall and winter.

7. Upgrade your thermostat: A thermostat upgrade may seem minor, but if you go from an old-school, manual thermostat to a modern, programmable one, you can make your home more efficient, lower your utility bills and even extend the life of your HVAC system. If you are comfortable working with electrical wires after shutting off the power, you may be able to make this improvement yourself. If you are at all unsure of your ability to safely complete this task, call a local HVAC pro to do it for you. While they are there, you might also have them change your filters and service your system to make sure you are ready for winter.

We have a new Superintendent, Tiffany Morse, who is leading our schools into the next phase.

Matilija, our Middle School, is now a 6th, 7th, and 8th grade school, with lots of new ideas coming forth on how to make each student comfortable in the newly combined school.

The first year of a new collaboration is always a learning curve. What works, and what needs improvement! In New York, my sixth grade class was bused to another location as our elementary school was full. The next year, there was room for the sixth graders, and they returned to status quo.

Maybe we spent more time on the bus than schooling!

Also, I have noticed many of our Ojai Valley public schools have been sprucing up their areas and buildings, with paint, roofs, equipment, and more… getting ready for another good year for our students.

My grandson in entering 1st grade this year and I am sure it will be a good learning experience for him and his fellow students. Have fun and learn a lot!

Asparagus & Gruyere Quiche Are you looking for something new to take on a picnic? Look no further. This quiche has body and, just as important, a fantastic combination of flavors that pair with most anything you add to your picnic basket. Gruyère is a hard yellow cheese named after the town of Gruyères in Switzerland. It is sweet but slightly salty, with a flavor that varies widely with age. It is often described as creamy and nutty when young, becoming with age more assertive, earthy and complex. This recipe takes advantage of aging. The flavor and texture of my whole wheat crust add yet another dimension of flavor that will make you yodel with delight.

INGREDIENTS: ASPARAGUS & GRUYERE QUICHE

Randy Graham is a writer, author, and private chef. He enjoys cooking for friends and family using ingredients from backyard vegetable and herb gardens. His food is often called “vegetarian comfort food.” He and his wife, Robin, live in Ojai, California, with their dog, Willow. Robin and Willow are not vegetarians.

Crust: 1 cups whole wheat flour 1.5 cups white flour 1.5 cups wheat germ 1.5 teaspoon sea salt 1 cup plus 4 tablespoons butter 10-12 tablespoons cold water Filling: 1 tablespoon butter 1 leek (white and green parts only, halved and thinly sliced) 4 large eggs 1.5 cups half & half .5 teaspoon salt .5 teaspoon freshly ground pepper Pinch of ground nutmeg 1 cup aged Gruyére cheese, grated

DIRECTIONS: Crust: Stir together flour, wheat germ, and salt. Cut butter into these dry ingredients (a pastry cutter makes this easy).

When the dough is the consistency of rolled oats, sprinkle with enough of the water to hold the dough together. Form into a ball, cover and refrigerate for about an hour while you prepare the filling.

Filling Directions: In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add leek and asparagus; season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally until asparagus is tender about seven or eight minutes. Set aside to cool. In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs, half and half, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Set aside.

Baking Instructions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 9-inch square baking pan with cooking spray. Roll out dough and lay carefully in the baking pan creating a 1-inch high crust up the sides of the pan. Sprinkle Gruyère on bott om of crust and top with asparagus/leek mixture. Pour egg mixture on top. Bake until the center of quiche is set — about 50 minutes.

Remove from oven and allow to cool for 10 minutes before serving.

7 WAYS TO GET LOST

1. SHELF ROAD Directions: From Ojai Avenue, head north on Signal Street until it ends. Length: 3.5 miles return trip. Difficulty: Easy. It takes about an hour at a brisk pace to walk the length of the trail and back between the trailheads at either North Signal Street or Gridley Road. This hike is perfect for visitors or residents to get “ the lay of the land” in Ojai. It is also one of the most “dog friendly” walks around.

2. VENTURA RIVER BOTTOM TRAILS Directions: From Highway 150, there’s a trailhead just east of the Ventura River bridge. From South Rice Road, there’s a trailhead just north of the intersection with Lomita Road.

Also from South Rice, take a right on Meyer Road to the Oso Trailhead. Length: Varies. Difficulty: Easy to Moderate. Three trailheads lead you into the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy’s 1,600-acre Ventura River Preserve. This three-mile stretch of the Ventura River offers a spectacular glimpse into old-growth oak canopy, splendid vistas from rocky ridgelines, deep swimming holes, lush fern grottoes, rare wildflowers and many miles of trails to choose from.

6. COZY DELL TRAIL Directions: Head east on the Maricopa Highway (Highway 33) for 3.3 miles. The turnout is on the left, just before and across from Friend’s Ranch packing house.. Cross the street to the trailhead. Length: 1.9 miles to Cozy Dell Creek. Difficulty: Moderate. The trail begins along a seasonal creek and quickly climbs about 640 feet in elevation along a well-forested and wild-flowered canyon to a ridgeline knoll with spectacular views of the Ojai Valley.

7. MIDDLE FORK OF MATILIJA CANYON

3. PRATT TRAIL Directions: From Ojai Avenue, turn north on Signal Street and drive about 1.2 miles until you see the Forest Service sign on the left. The trailhead is a further half-mile. Length: 4.4 miles to Nordhoff Ridge. Difficulty: Moderate to Strenuous. The Pratt Trail criss-crosses a seasonal stream through the backyards of private properties before opening onto a natural bowl formed by the slope of Nordhoff Ridge. Follow the signs through about two miles of dry and dusty switchbacks until you reach the ridgeline. From there, it’s another two steep, dusty miles to Nordhoff Peak, 4,426 feet above sea level.

4. GRIDLEY TRAIL Directions: From Ojai Avenue, turn on the Gridley Road.

Follow it to the gated end, about two miles. Length: 3 miles to the Gridley Springs, 6 miles to Nordhoff Peak. Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous. Elevation gain: 1,200 feet to the springs.

This trail, at the north end of Gridley Road just to the left before the gates to Hermitage Ranch, begins with a steep climb, then follows an orchard road through avocado trees before making a northeastward turn along the rocky western flank of the mountainside. The trail winds along the steep flank of the mountain until it enters the cool, dense side canyon wherein lies Gridley Springs.

Directions: Head east on Highway 33 for about 4.7 miles to Matilija Canyon Road. Follow the road to the end — about another two miles. Length: Up to 7 miles (14 miles return).

Difficulty: Moderate. Follow the trailhead at the end of Matilija Canyon Road through the gated property to the west side of the creek. The trail, more of a one-track road at this point, heads towards the gates of Blue Heron Ranch, a historic farm with orange and lemon groves. The trail then clambers through thickening chaparral scrub for another 1.5 miles until you can see tilted slabs of weathered granite and a long, green pool to the right. The trail descends back into the creekside sycamore and willow forest through a series of campsites, swimming holes and geologic marvels. The shifting and often-concealed trail eventually leads you to the fabled Three Falls of the Matilija.

MY IDEAL OJAI DAY Before I moved here 20 years ago, I would mention Ojai and get two reactions: 1. — an uncomprehending “Where?,” or 2. — “Wow! You’re so lucky, you’re going to love it!”

Those people in the latter category were right. Those people in the former category are to be pitied.

To those who know, Ojai’s allure is powerful and unforgettable. It remains a place apart — filled with beauty and promise. All it takes is a few moments of reflection and gratitude every now and then to remind yourself.

So consider this story to be my way of showing that gratitude, and maybe, if I’m lucky, to spread around some information about how to spend your time in Ojai, whether you’re here for the day or forever.

Mornings: Check out one of the many superb yoga classes in Ojai — Peak Power Yoga & Wellness, Bryant Street Gym, Ojai Yoga Shala or Iyengar Yoga Center or a morning meditation anywhere on the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy’s Ventura River Preserve.

Then, grab a cup of fresh-roasted coffee at Ojai Coffee Roasting Company sit back and watch the parade of locals. It’s a people watcher’s paradise — a riptide of rascals and assorted eccentrics with, no doubt, colorful backstories, like a Thomas Pynchon novel. (Note: “Inherent Vice” featured an Ojai storyline).

Then, walk it off with a hike over to Nutmeg’s Ojai House for an electic assortment of greeting cards and gifts.

That’s a good warmup for the cultural mecca of Bart’s Books, with its legendary outdoor shelves. Bart’s is one of the best places in Southern California to spend an idle hour. The thousands of volumes change frequently, so you’ll never know what you’ll end up buying, but you’ll feel good about it.

If you’re feeling energetic, and really want to enrich your Ojai experience, rent a bike from the Mob Shop, and get good guidance for an excursion from the staff perhaps down the nearby Ojai Valley

Trail, with a detour to the stunning waters of Casitas Lake, a mere 5 miles away.

Afternoons: So many options for lunch, it’s actually a source of stress — “the paradox of choice.” There are no bad choices, however. For visitors, I’d recommend either Café Emporium for its salads and patio dining, or to grab some fresh-and-healthy deli items from Rainbow Bridge, then sit on a sidewalk table.

Whatever Ojai characters you didn’t see at the Coffee Roasting in the morning you’ll likely see at Rainbow Bridge. It’s like they take shifts being odd and interesting.

Another not-so-secret gem is the Ojai Tortilla House, with their fresh-made wrappings around delicious ingredients.

It’s a short walk from there to the Ojai Valley Museum, where the treasures of our culture are either on permanent display or in well-curated exhibits.

Then, browse for local art and artisanship at Poppies Art & Gift behind the Arcade, or Porch Gallery, where owners Lisa and Heather are proud to tell you the always interesting stories behind each of their carefully curated exhibits.

Make sure you leave time to stroll the Arcade, with some of the best window-shopping in the tri-state area.

Of particular interest is Rains Department Store, going strong for more than a century, an integral part of the Ojai community and a lot of fun to browse with its ever-changing, carefully chosen selection.

Nearby Human Arts represents some of the leading folk artists around, and the boutiques and tasting rooms round out a busy shopping experience.

Then, walk through the oak-shaded sanctuary of Libbey Park,. You can also climb onstage at Libbey Bowl, and feel the vibratory emanations of the giants in whose footsteps you tread — Igor Stavin-sky, Pierre Boulez, Jack Johnson or Alex Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes.

Evenings: It doesn’t matter how hot it gets during the day (and Ojai in the summer months can be as scorching as an Anthony Lane movie review), at night

the air masses shift, bringing the ocean’s cooling breezes. It is time for Pink Moment reflection, the eternal sigh of a day well spent. The Ojai Valley Inn even posts the Pink Moment times near the front desk entrance, and, with their well-appointed patio at the Oak Grill, is a perfect place to watch the deepening hues of the evening’s approach across the Topa Topa bluffs. You can stroll the immaculate grounds of the five-diamond resort afterwards.

Another must-see dining experience is Boccali’s, the family-run restaurant 3 miles east of downtown, now celebrating 30+ years years as one of the county’s premier dining destinations. Their tomato salad and strawberry shortcake are rightfully highly regarded as the highlights of a September evening, and the secret recipe red sauce enhances many of the other dishes. Another fun stop is Azu, where the Mediterranean menu is well suited for Ojai’s taste buds, and the 35-foot bar is a great place to meet old friends and make new ones.

Next door, Ojai Rotie features al fresco dining plus the most delicious sourdough bread you are likely to taste, made by accomplished Chef Claud Mann with the native yeasts that give each day’s baking a distinct, always delicious, flavor.

Of course, Ojai would have virtually no night life were it not for The Vine downtown and the Deer Lodge just up Highway 33 a couple miles. With live music nearly every night, a well-curated menu (the best mac and cheese around at the Deer Lodge), and a lively wait staff, it provides a place where music lovers — both consumers and producers — can create those magic moments that make lasting memories. The Ranch House, another Meiners Oaks destination, is the birthplace of California cuisine, predating even Alice Wa-ters’ Chez Panisse. With its newly refurbished piano bar, it’s a great place for a drink, as well as dinner.

There are so many things to do in Ojai, that I’ve barely scratched the surface.

Imagine one ideal day, extended these 20 years and beyond, and you’ll get an idea.

FOUNDING FATHERS & MOTHERS tregarded among Ojai’s chief benefactors — having been behind the buildbing of such Ojai landmarks as the Ojai Valley Inn, St. Thomas Aquinas Church (now the Museum), Post Office Tower and the Arcade, others have been very influential in shaping Ojai’s identity. Here’s a few: Annie Besant.

Freethinker, feminist and noted Theosophist.

Though she only spent a few days in Ojai, she brought Krishnamurti to Ojai, and helped buy hundreds of acres of property in Ojai, (now the sites of Besant Hill School and, along with A.P. Warrington, the Krotona Center) which she called “the smiling vale.” She is considered one of the pioneers of introducing Eastern mystical thought to the West, and was an early advocate of India’s independence. and the labor movement.

J Krishnamurti. The spiritual teacher and writer, came to Ojai in 1922, sponsored by the Theosophical Society, though he later broke with that group (“The Leaderless Path.”) He gave talks to many thousands of people each year, in the Star Camps in the oak groves west of Ojai (now the site of Oak Grove School. He once held the Guinness Book of World Records for having spoken to the greatest number of people.

Sherman Day Thacher. After coming West to farm and care for an ailing brother, the Yale-educated Thacher realized that he was going to need another source of income. So he founded The Thacher School in 1887. Now one of the most prestigious preparatory academies in the country, its founding creed was “teach a boy to ride, shoot and tell the truth.” Also, in 1896, his brother William founded “The Ojai,” the country’s oldest amateur tennis tournament. Among Thacher’s more illustrious students were industrialist, aviator and film producer Howard Hughes and three-time Pulitzer Prizewinning playwright and novelist Thornton Wilder, who wrote his first play while a Thacher student.

Beatrice Wood. The famed ceramicist’s (“The Mama of Dada”) greatest work of art may well have been her life. The irreverent, avant-garde Wood lived and worked in Ojai for decades until her death in 1998 at age 105. She inspired two classic movies, Francois Truffaut’s “Jules et Jim,” and James Cameron’s “Titanic.” She attributed her longevity to “chocolate and young men.” Her autobiography was appropriately titled, “I Shock Myself.” Many of her distinctive, whimsical, luminous luster-glazed pieces are on display at her former home, now the Beatrice Wood Center, in upper Ojai.

The name “Ojai” is believed to be derived from the Ventureño Chumash word ‘awhaý, meaning “moon.” In 1837, Fernando Tico received a land grant and established a cattle ranch. Thomas A. Scott, who had financial success with oil and railroads, bought the Ojai Valley in 1864 for oil exploration. By 1868, Scott, through his agent Thomas Bard, began selling properties to homesteaders. By 1874, R.G. Surdam plotted out the town he would call Nordhoff, renamed Ojai in 1917.

Ojai is about 90 miles northwest of Los Angeles and 30 miles east of Santa Barbara. The valley is about 10 miles long by 3 miles wide, surrounded by hills and mountains; the rare east-west orientation with a slight southward tilt gives the valley an extraordinary sun exposure; Ojai’s citrus and avocado crops are highly prized. This orientation also gives rise to Ojai as a spiritual destination.

It was due to the resources and organizing energy of Ohio glass manufacturer Edward Drummond Libbey that Nordhoff was rebuilt and renamed Ojai, inspired by the City Beautiful Movement. By 1917, with the construction of the Arcade and Post Office Tower, the town took its present shape.

The city’s self-styled nickname is “Shangri-La,” based on the story that Ojai was the backdrop (later left on the editing room floor) from the 1937 movie as the mystical sanctuary of James Hilton’s novel “Lost Horizon.”
