Tribute to ‘The God of Cricket’ An installation in the honour of India’s greatest ever sporting icon
B.Arch. Final Year Thesis
THEME Sachin Tendulkar commonly known as ‘The God of Cricket’ in India, has a huge impact on all generations in India, not just as a sportsman but also as a great human being. He has been the only reason for unity between various religions in India for almost 24 years. Our generation has seen his achievements, skills, humanity, honesty and many more, but coming generations will not have that previlege to experience it. This installation is dedicated to the people of India, where they can come and see his proud career through various forms of exhibits. More than a museum or a gallery, it will be a public place where people can come, meet, enjoy and be together the way they used to be during Sachin’s cricketing career.
FRONT PLAZA The whole installation is mainly divided into three public plazas ( a huge gathering space)- a front plaza, upper plaza and lower plaza which have different characters compared to others. The site located in the City of Pune, is at the junction of two roads which connect to various parts of the city. The front plaza designed at the junction has a huge flat space at street level and almost a floor high steps where people can sit and enjoy south sun and evening breeze. People have to climb these steps to enter the installation which adds monumentality to this space. At the same time, alternate provisions are made for old age and handicapped visitors. This plaza is dedicated to the Pune City where people can gather for various ocassions without entering the installation.
LOWER PLAZA
LOWER PLAZA
EXHIBITION One of the major activities in this installation is ‘Exhibition Area’. It consists of various exhibition galleries, transition spaces, digital media archives and Fans’ Wall. Most of the acitvities are places below upper plaza, keeping upper plaza open for public gathering activity. Exhibition areas serve ‘Inspirational & Informative’ purpose. Transition spaces within the exhibition area are kept open to sky. From the upper plaza people can look into these transition spaces. In this manner, upper plaza and exhibition spaces are connected physically as well as visually. Big installations like this need always need some visual connectivity between various spaces, so that people can locate themselves and feel connected with different activities at different levels.
MASTERPLAN
Tranquility- In search of peace Senior Police Officer’s Mess and Commercial Complex
National Association of Students of Architecture HUDCO Trophy
THEME Tranquility is the quality or state of being tranquil; calmness; serenity. Tranquility here defined as “how much you think this setting is a quiet, peaceful place, a good place to get away from everyday life”. Looking at the life of a senior police officer, which is full of struggle and stress, this feeling of tranquility is lost somewhere in the hustle bustle of their busy schedules. The space is to be designed such that the officers visiting the installation (mess) should attain their mental stability and peace of mind. How can the tranquility be achieved? We opt minimalism as a way on basis of which a space can be created to match the perfect environment. Keeping into officer’s post, prestige and standard of living, the campus has to reflect a level of simplicity and gratitude towards them. Officers would come for relaxation and require peace. Thus use of minimum elements, minimum textures and colours can avoid mental chaos.
COMMERCIAL COMPLEX The overhang cafeteria elaborates grandness of the entrance, simultaneously offering an unobstructed view to the people inside the cafeteria to the surrounding. The levels are visible as they ascend from the road making the structure visually stable. The frame stretching out from the mess building flows into the commercial block creating a sense of indirect connection between two blocks. The louvers act as a common element in both the blocks which are separated by a thin partition of continuous frame. The view is taken from the road junction and the commercial block acts as landmark itself.
