India Hicks is a woman of many talents, but there is one skill that interlinks them all: entertaining. From summer soirées to long lunches that stretch to dinner, Hicks is no stranger to hosting and, as the occasion demands, decorating. Hicks’ dreamy Georgian-style retreat in bucolic Oxfordshire is often the setting for her get-togethers, offering options outside and in; the interiors reference the designer’s storied British heritage— her mother is Lady Pamela Hicks, first cousin to the late Prince Philip, and her father was the interior designer David Hicks—as well as her adopted Bahamian home, while the hedge-bordered garden lawn makes the perfect setting for an al-fresco event. When conceptualizing a tablescape, Hicks begins by considering the type of occasion: “Is it small and intimate or
is it bonkers and large?” From there, whatever the scale, her process is to “start in the middle of the table and work my way out.” To set a seasonal tone, Hicks uses a mix of real and faux flowers, admitting that while “we’re all living in a more sustainably conscious way, I would miss having something real on the table. It’s the perfect balance.” As well as good lighting—“I’m over 50, it’s essential!”—another must-have that Hicks insists upon is napkins. This sparked a recent dinner-table debate about the environmental pros and cons of fabric vs. paper designs; the result was a return to the former.

Hicks maintains that entertaining doesn’t have to involve a huge budget. “My father had a saying that good taste and design are by no means dependent on money, and the same goes for entertaining.” So, beyond the setting itself, Hicks thinks a good mix of characters is key when it comes to making guests feel welcome. “I like to have unexpected guests, people who have come from different walks of life or who have had mad experiences.” She enhances this by creating a good seating plan, one that considers who
