hile 2020 may have gotten off to a challenging start, here at OKA, we have something to quietly celebrate. Back in 1999, three friends started a small business selling hand-crafted rattan - initially inspired by designs from the Far East adapted for modern life in the West. Fast-forward two decades and we are proud and grateful to be toasting a milestone – our 21st birthday.

Little did we know that from our humble origins in a countrybarn office, today we would have 14 stores across the UK, our oka.com online store, and an Interior Design Service. Last year also saw another landmark moment for us as we introduced our signature mix of classic designs and colorful accents to the US. If this year has taught us something, it’s that we should never take anything for granted. Now, more than ever, we feel proud of the OKA mission: to make your home a safe haven of comforts, where you can spend quality time with family and friends. WHERE IT ALL BEGAN Back in 1999, three great friends and entrepreneurial women - Sue Jones, Lucinda Waterhouse and Annabel Astor - founded OKA, and set out to make good design accessible to everyone.

ach brought with them their own expertise, great taste and strong business acumen – the balance of which is the secret to OKA’s individuality and success. Together, they established our signature look, originally inspired by the English country house. Since then, they have refined it to a style that suits a multitude of personalities and homes, one where nothing is too precious or perfect to be enjoyed. OKA originally launched as a mail-order company; our first catalogs featured only hand-crafted rattan accessories and storage. Thanks to this unique offering, OKA became an instant success. At the turn of the millennium we opened the doors to our first store in West London. Over the past two decades, we have expanded online, launched

in America, collaborated with the best in the industry and created countless iconic spaces. The brand has grown more than our founders could ever have imagined. DESIGNED IN ENGLAND, INSPIRED BY THE WORLD Our very first collection was inspired by ancient designs, adapted to suit modern lifestyles. This ethos remains intrinsic to OKA today: the aim is to create pieces that are in keeping with traditional styles and artisanal processes but with a contemporary edge. We believe that inspiration can be found in the most unlikely of places, so we’re always on the lookout for potential new muses. Once a piece has been conceptualized, the search for the most skilled artisans to bring it to life begins. Since day one, our founders have traveled all over the world to find the finest craftsmen. Each maker we work with possesses skills that have been passed down through the generations. At OKA you’ll find rattan storage and accessories that have been intricately woven by hand, and rugs that have been hand block-printed using natural vegetable dyes or treated with a herbal wash then left to dry in the sun to create a specific aged finish. We have returned to some of these trusted craftsmen for over 20 years.

Some of our most popular and signature pieces are those that require the most talent to create. All of the items in our Kraak China Collection are made and hand-painted by a couple in Jingdezhen – known as the porcelain capital of China – where the traditional techniques used date back over 1,700 years. WITH FLYING COLORS The idea of ‘luxury’ in interiors is often synonymous with a neutral palette, but not at OKA. Color makes everyday items exciting, reflects personality and brings a room to life. Our classic Stafford Chairs and Costellini Ottomans are testament to this: simple, elegant designs that are elevated by color, making as much of a statement in pared-back Sea Blue as they do in rich Rioja. Making a home unique is all about displaying aspects of your character, and color offers an excellent opportunity to indulge your creative side. It needn’t be limited to furniture and décor – what about the walls and floor? Everything and everywhere can be an opportunity to play with new shades. Color sets the mood of a room, so let your space dictate the ones you choose. A light, airy sitting room may call for relaxed pastels while an intimate dining room with dramatic architecture allows for plenty of rich tones.

Color can be used both to create a coherent look and to add contrast. Don’t be afraid to mix and match all kinds of tones – warm, cool, bright, dark – sometimes the pairings that work best are those that are the least expected. And, don’t forget that color and pattern go hand in hand. Echo your palette with delicate florals, ikat designs, bold stripes and animal prints. Each will influence the look and feel of a room in its own way.

The Lady and The Stafford
W
hen our co-founder Lady Annabel Astor couldn’t find the perfect dining chair for her English country home, she took to her sketch pad. As someone who often entertains a crowd, Annabel firmly believes that her guests’ comfort is just as important as the food and wine served. “A dining chair should not only be incredibly stylish, but comfortable enough so that people can enjoy the atmosphere and conversation, without wanting to rush to leave the table,” she says. So, when Annabel couldn’t find an upholstered dining chair that checked all the boxes, she designed one herself and the Stafford was born. What makes this chair so unique is that while it boasts a slim silhouette (allowing you to fit more around the table), it’s still incredibly comfortable - enough so that it could even double as a desk chair. Complete with oak legs, an intricate border of brass-colored studs and a back pull, the Stafford looks attractive from every angle. “The back of a chair is often overlooked, but it should be well designed because it’s what you see first,” says Annabel. The sitting room was a real opportunity to add color. Lucinda used bold red, charcoal and gold accessories in contrast to the neutral palette. “This is a small sitting room but that doesn’t mean you have to use small furniture. I introduced a large corner sofa to maximize space and create an entertaining area. In her London home, co-founder Sue Jones shares the inspiration behind our Ashmolean Shelves. “
I
was searching for elegant shelves that were sturdy enough to hold my vast book collection, but I couldn’t find exactly what I was looking for. I live in a period property, so I wanted bookshelves that blended in with the house’s architecture, but that also had the simplicity of contemporary design.” Inspired by classic architectural lines, Sue designed what was to become one of our UK best sellers, the Ashmolean Shelves. The collection fits seamlessly into both modern and traditional interiors. What does Sue attribute to their success? “Storage is a tricky subject, whatever the size of your home. The Ashmoleans are so popular because they’re adaptable. My Favorite Things Elizabeth Hurley is in her 25th year of a beauty contract with the Estée Lauder Companies, where she is also the Global Ambassador for their Breast Cancer Campaign. She owns and runs her own eponymous beachwear brand, Elizabeth Hurley Beach, and recently starred in Marvel’s Runaways. Elizabeth lives in England between Herefordshire and London.
What did you aspire to be when you were a child? A spy. I still do really. Do you have a favorite room at home? I converted my son’s playroom into a bar and virtually live in it. It’s a heavenly hot pink and faces east, so it’s very nice for breakfast too. What makes a house a home? Family, friends and dogs. Tell us something unexpected about yourself. I’m extremely good with a chainsaw. What advice would you give to young women who are beginning their careers? If you feel you’re on the wrong career path, have the courage to change it. Even if it means going back a step. There is definitely something out there you’ll love getting your teeth into. What is your best fashion tip? Learn what suits you, from colors to styles, and look after yourself - your health, your body, your skin and your hair. The healthier you look, the better the clothes will look. What inspires your swimwear collection? I’m inspired by watching women on holiday and seeing what they wear. Many women feel a bit nervous about beachwear but there are many tricks to looking good - you have to ruthlessly try on a lot of things and really find what suits you. What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? My grandmother said to always sleep with the window open. I go demented in hotels with sealed windows and always wake up looking peaky.
