The best part of autumn, though, is the myriad hosting opportunities it brings; with attention turning to the interior of our homes again, the options are endless. If dinner parties are your thing, look to chef Anna Stockwell’s crowd-pleasing recipes (p.82) – her spritz station could only be bettered with the addition of our new Gonglin Wine Cabinet (p.13). For those who prefer the quiet life, now’s the time for a new, film marathon-ready sofa; on page 76 you’ll discover how three individuals created their dream design with Tailored by OKA, our handmade-to-order seating range. All of this is, of course, intermingled with the highlights of our new collection; there's everything from fresh takes on our old favourites to brand-new pieces, so I hope you find all the furnishings you need to make the season ahead one to remember.

SueJones Co-Founder and Creative Director of OKA And here we are again, back in September!

It seems to come around more quickly every year. You’ll find people in two camps during this month: those that are lamenting the end of summer and others who welcome the fresh start that the ‘new term’ brings. I, for one, fall into the latter group. I love everything about autumn and the routine change it ushers in; the crisper days that provide the perfect excuse to dig out my cosiest throws, and the falling leaves that inspire me to rethink my colour palette. If a total tonal overhaul sounds too daunting, I suggest you start by switching up your cushions; for a simple update, nothing could be better, and you’ll find some of my favourite ways to do so on page 14.

Go with the Flow

With a warm oak base, wood grain galore and a cool stone top, the Flavian inspires a wholesome aesthetic. Follow in its footsteps by decorating with organic materials; think earthenware pots, baskets woven from natural fibres and colours that reflect the great outdoors. If your gallery wall meanders a bit, Flavian will take it in its stride – just play around with the arrangement until it all feels right.

This set-up is proof the rules are there for a reason: there’s beauty to be found in symmetry. Start by finding the centre point of the console, and hang an intricately framed mirror in alignment. Then place a slender lamp on either side to echo the Helenium’s delicate silhouette. Smaller-scale patterns on lampshades and complementary accessories will be just the thing to add a finishing touch.

The Gonglin Range, which started with a petite cabinet, memory box and wastepaper bin, has now grown in scale as well as number – this season we welcome the striking and substantial wine cabinet, complete with internal racks to keep your glasses to hand.

Drawing inspiration from far-flung places and times gone by has always been part of our design ethos, and nothing speaks to this more than our Gonglin Range, whose muse was traditional Chinese landscape paintings. It wouldn’t be an OKA classic without a little creative license, however. Here, a dramatic petrol-grey and silver colour palette lends a contemporary edge to items that have been made and finished by hand using artisanal practices. The precise application of texture, colour and silver foil used to create the intricate chinoiserie scenes (which are continuously revised until deemed perfect) means no two pieces are ever the same.

Take to the Floor

“One way to shake things up is by combining cushions in different shapes and sizes. A room can feel quite flat and formal if you use a number of cushions of the same size, so create depth and scale with a nice mix of designs. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of round cushions, but I like mixing and matching our large square cushions with some of our smaller rectangular designs. This is also an easy way of adding interest if you don’t want to do anything too bold with colour.”

“I’ve never liked great big bean bags; they tend to be popular with younger people, but they’re quite difficult for grown-ups – once you get into them you can’t get out of them. I think of our floor cushions as being like movable ottomans; they’ve got much more form than a bean bag, are lightweight and also extremely versatile. We’ve designed quite a few in the same fabrics as our rugs, so they’re very decorative and fit seamlessly into a room.” Linen

For a simple seasonal update, nothing beats new cushions says OKA Co-Founder and Creative Director Sue Jones. Here are her tips for creating your perfect set-up.

Layer Textures to Add Interest

Be Bold with Pattern

“I love mixing textures. I think there’s something a bit boring about having all the same cushions in the same fabric; I like to see tonally what works together, and very often that’s mixing a very thick linen with a silk or a wool. In the past, I’ve had old rugs made into cushions and mixed them with some of our patterned and velvet designs.”

“I personally don’t have a very brightly coloured sofa in my home, or indeed very brightly coloured walls or curtains, so the cheeriness in my rooms comes from accents such as wall art, books, rugs and, most importantly, cushions. They’re the perfect way to bring in different shades and make a space your own. When styling cushions, I like to take inspiration from a room’s rug; I think that gives you a good palette to work with.”

Create a Colourful Display

“Don’t be frightened of clashing patterns and prints; I quite like drama so I am often looking for ways to put things together that you wouldn’t normally expect. Sometimes they work, and sometimes they don’t, but the important thing is to have fun with it. Mix up the scale and style of your prints for a real contrast; a small floral and a large stripe in complementary colours will look far more pleasing on the eye than two of the same design.”

Part of north Wales’ appeal is its contrast; an area where wild natural beauty meets spectacular historic architecture. A fitting home, then, for a 17th-century property that is a juxtaposition in itself; it was formerly half servants’ quarters, half home to landed gentry. Having been lovingly renovated, it exudes character from every nook and cranny, now aesthetically bridging the gap between country and city – the perfect stage for some of our new season pieces, which are cut from the same versatile cloth. From jewel tones in the sitting room to warm hues in the kitchen, rich colour is front and centre here, creating a cosy vibe that also packs a punch. Softening these statement shades is the job of rattan: detailing a coffee table, desk and chair, as well as shaping storage accessories, this beautiful woven material brings a natural element that blends seamlessly with the space’s countryside location. It’s not all rustic pleasures though; sleek gold detailing lends an urban edge, adding a hint of the unexpected – a sentiment that sums up the property perfectly. view the entire collection at oka.com

A relaxed take on tradition makes for the perfect bolthole in the Cotswolds Sit back, relax and get cosy in this Cotswolds cottage built from distinctive honey-coloured Bath stone. With a façade cloaked in wisteria, it's a picture-perfect autumnal escape – one that only gets better when you step through the door, to be greeted by traditional fireplaces and wood-burning stoves that draw you close.

Inside, there’s no such thing as too much pattern and colour: stripes, florals, geometrics, chinoiserie, and even a palm print – look carefully – adorn rooms from top to bottom and lend them an inviting and quintessentially English look. Layers of texture are important too; soft leather is contrasted with raw silk, woven rattan with sleek velvet. It’s eclectic, yet perfectly put together – anything and everything goes, which is all part of the charm.

It might sound busy, but the overall effect is far from it; the home’s low ceilings and bold design are offset by an abundance of natural light that the property is bathed in, lending it a brightness that creates a warm, intimate feeling.

House Style

Handed an invitation to individuality, three return customers (some, well-known faces) each put their unique spin on a Tailored by OKA sofa to suit their home style

A home should reflect its inhabitants; it's a container for a patchwork of precious, personal items that nod to the characters and lifestyles of those who reside there. If there’s one piece of furniture that speaks to this most, it’s the sofa. Synonymous with how you like to spend your time – whether playing host to family movie marathons, alone time with a much-thumbed novel or catch-ups with close friends – it's one of the most important items in the house. So, what could be better than crafting a sofa that perfectly suits you and your habits? Offering more than a thousand possible iterations, our handmade-toorder Tailored by OKA seating range is an invitation to individuality. The selection comprises six classic styles in a variety of sizes, complete with a choice of legs, and a wide range of colour and fabric options, including two new ‘clever’ fabrics: velvet and linen. Both have been innovatively designed to look and feel just as luxurious as the natural materials, but with the benefit of greater durability. In the words of our Co-Founder Sue Jones, one of the most gratifying things is “seeing how the sofas have lent a personal touch to homes all over the country”, so we set out to show this to you, too. Read on to discover how three fans of OKA designed their ideal sofas.

“I wanted my home to feel like a story, so you could go from one room to the next and have a new experience, without it feeling jarring,” says Louise Roe, who renovated her London townhouse last year. To achieve the synergy she desired, she wove her “very traditional English” style throughout the space, using complementary colour palettes, textures and materials to create a cohesive feel. This sense of harmony was on her mind when she set out to find the perfect sofa for her kitchen, the heart of her home where her young family spend most of their time. With practicality and comfort high on the agenda, she opted for the gentle, sloping silhouette of our Tailored by OKA Egerton 2-Seater, along with ‘clever’ velvet upholstery – which is very hardwearing and won’t mark or stain like the ordinary material (great for high-traffic family homes). Those boxes ticked, she turned to colour. “I wanted, as usual, to do something a bit different and experiment,” she explains. “I love our kitchen; the palette is dark blue and terracotta with lots of wooden tones, so I found the most stunning Dirty Orange colour to match. I squealed when I saw the sample; it sits so well with the rest of the house.”

“If you’re going to do something bespoke then you might as well push the boat out,” she says. “To be able to put your own personal spin on a brand you already love is a dream.”

Though Roe’s home isn’t short of OKA pieces – our Coleridge takes pride of place in her sitting room – the opportunity to have something truly unique appealed to her creative side.

Being able to properly lounge, on something soft with a bit of give, is a must for me”

Actor and dancer Eric Underwood designed his bingewatching location of dreams

And Relax...

When looking to move house during the first lockdown of 2020 – “yes, I was one of those mad people,” he laughs – the first thing that caught Underwood’s eye was this property’s summer room. “I was captivated by it; when I was designing the house I started from here and worked back inside,” he says. As he is a fan of blending the indoor with the outdoor –plants reign supreme in every room – this makes perfect sense. This verdant theme, was on his mind when he chose Persian Green as his new sofa colour: “I love the idea of everything looking really natural and complementary,” he tells us.

Describing his style as “relaxed and a little bohemian”, comfort, too, was high on Underwood’s list of requirements; the first thing he did when viewing the Tailored range was to lie down on the Highmore. “Being able to properly lounge, on something soft with a bit of 78 | view the entire collection at oka.com

“As a performer I’m ‘on’ so often, that when I get home, I just want to be ‘off’,” explains Eric Underwood when we meet him in his north London flat. “It’s really important to me that as soon as I come through the door, I’m in an easy, safe space.” Having to create a welcoming home in a new city is, no doubt, tied into this sentiment. Underwood is, however, well-versed in moving around; born and raised in Washington D.C., he trained at the prestigious American Ballet Theatre in New York, before crossing the pond more than a decade ago.

In Perfect Harmony

It doesn’t get much more picturesque or quintessentially English than the village of Turville in the Chiltern Hills, home to Deborah Abbot’s gorgeous cottage, and equally pretty garden. While her house has all the charm of its AngloSaxon surroundings, it was actually only built in 2005, something that appealed to her practical side when buying it.

“What I have here is something that looks very authentic, but has all the modern conveniences,” she explains. When designing and renovating, her main priority was curating a space that would work for entertaining. → give, is a must for me. I’m 6'2" and I can actually stretch out on it,” he says. “There’s nothing better than getting home at night and being able to lie there and look up at the stars. It’s very meditative.”

Underwood chose ‘clever‘ velvet upholstery for his Highmore, which means his much-adored pup Sophia, who, like her ‘father‘ is clearly a natural in front of the camera, can join him as often as she likes.

A piece that fitted seamlessly into her space, with room for the whole family, was the top priority for interiors enthusiast and long-time OKA customer Deborah Abbot

So, when choosing a new sofa, one that fitted her lifestyle was of paramount importance. “I love the linen; it’s rustic enough for here and is going to be fairly easy to maintain,” she tells us. “There has to be enough space for all the family to be comfortable; it has to work around the people in the room,” which, she says, is why she opted for the Radcliffe. “I love the fact that the cushions are deep and soft; it’s very snug, but Abbotelegant.”describes her home as a "collection of numerous bits and pieces that I love, which I've gathered over the years and work around.” Some favourite items include a sculpture crafted by a close friend and a Tibetan tray from a stint working in Nepal, yet the effect is perfectly congruent, thanks to a carefully curated colour scheme. “Everything in my sitting room is very tonal. I adore the Dune Green shade of the sofa; it really picks out the colours of the rug, which I hadn’t even realised had light green in it – it just adds that je ne sais quoi.”

Though it’s safe to say all of us missed dinner parties during the pandemic, few people would have felt that pain quite so keenly as Anna Stockwell, whose new cookbook For the Table offers an edible, helpful paean to the infinite pleasures of such occasions. Over half of the book's dishes and tips were conceived and finalised when Stockwell and her boyfriend were locked down together in 2020, in their quiet home in New York State’s Hudson Valley.

The book is a collection of the things I have come to love, and serve to the friends and family who have come to my house, over the past 18 years of my life: here [in the Hudson Valley], but mostly in Brooklyn, where I moved immediately after leaving college. So, when I came to decide which recipes to put in the book, everything naturally fell into place. Of course, these recipes are all designed for big groups of people, so for the ones that needed finalising, I developed them, but saved the testing until we were able to go and create a bubble with my parents and siblings. What role do you think recipes play today, when – thanks to books like Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat by Samin Nosrat – there’s a move toward more intuitive, free-form styles of cooking?

In her first cookbook, For the Table, food writer, stylist and former Epicurious editor Anna Stockwell offers no-fuss hosting tips and shares a menu for a joyous feast with OKA

Words: Clare Finney Anna Stockwell

Stockwell’s recipes are designed to feed a crowd, by candlelight and to the sound of a classic playlist. Like her recipes, she is upbeat, generous and alive to the bright side of life: "I love cooking for people. I love hosting," she says. Longing for that during lockdown only sharpened her appetite (and her nib). "It gave me a much greater appreciation of why it's special."

I think there are still two kinds of cooks out there: those who love to follow a recipe exactly and for it to turn out just like the photo, and those who are more intuitive, who cook by taste, touch and feel.

It's a traditional cookbook in that there are recipes, you follow them and your dish turns out like the pictures. However, I try to give people the confidence to make substitutions – they are allowed! Everything was

Simple Pleasures

For the Table is a tribute to the feeling of having people gather together, talking, drinking and eating lovingly-made food [in a shared space]. How did you write a book about dinner parties when you couldn’t have any?

I am a big fan of the latter; of trying to give people the tools to make sure the recipe works, while leaving room for their creativity by weaving in suggestions for how they can adapt it to their tastes. Where does For the Table come into that?

But, to get to the point of being an intuitive cook, you must understand the basics first. There are many ways to get to that point, one of which is to follow recipes for a long time until the fundamentals are ingrained, and you feel confident enough to start riffing; another is to learn the fundamental techniques and apply them to a broader range of dishes.

is wine glasses. I don’t let myself wash those at night, let alone anyone else!

It’s changed what I’m cooking and when Icookit.ThereareweekswhenI’mconstantly cooking aubergines or tomatoes, which has been a fun challenge; I love a cooking puzzle, and having to get creative, and I have always cooked based on what’s in the fridge. Now I cook based on what’s in the fridge and what’s in the garden – it’s so exciting: to eat your own tomatoes off the vine; to walk outside and gather some lettuce; to snip fresh herbs for every meal.

You moved from inner city Brooklyn to the leafy Hudson Valley just over two years ago. How has that shaped your cooking and recipes?

The beautiful imagery in the book is all shot and styled in your own home. How would you describe your own approach to table design? I like to set a colourful table, and I don’t believe that everything must match. I like mismatched plates, different coloured napkins, and I love to have a mix of vintage – from old flea markets and antique shops – and new. I have a big drawer full of candles, tablecloths and more platters than is probably necessary, and I always set the table with lots of beeswax candles in vintage-style candlesticks.

For the Table by Anna Stockwell is available to buy now (£25, Abrams Books) photographed in my kitchen in the Hudson Valley, so it really reflects me and my personal style and approach to cooking. Most of the recipes come from my time in Brooklyn, where I had grown used to hosting dinner parties in a tiny kitchen with no dishwasher. That meant I had to be good at prepping in advance and streamlining so as to create as little mess as possible; these are all sharing recipes that you can make for loads of people in any kitchen.

It’s important to let your friends help you clean up and do the dishes. It’s more fun for everyone, because you can bop around to music and clean together, and it’s easier for you the next day. The only thing you should leave to wash the next day Kintaro

I never used to be interested in gardening, even though I grew up with a mother who owned a landscape garden design business; but now that I have my own garden to tend, I have really thrown myself in. The part of it I am most excited about is vegetables, which I have been working really hard to keep alive. It’s been trial and error for the most part, but I have had so much fun growing everything from seeds. I call my mum all the time now with gardening questions, and she loves it.

“Hello! Come in! Welcome! Can I get you a drink?” This moment sets the tone for the rest of the night. It says: this is a party, not just dinner. It says: you are my guest, I care about you, and I’m going to take care of you. It eases the transition from whatever outside world they’re coming from into the world of your home. It’s a simple gesture, but a meaningful ritual of welcome. I always offer two choices: sparkling water as the first and then – depending on my mood, the weather and the occasion – either a spritz, a martini, or a glass of wine. I like to serve spritzes if I want something lighter in alcohol to ease into the evening more slowly. I set up a spritz station so guests can DIY their drink, or so I can easily assemble each as people arrive.

A bucket of ice

TO MAKE A SPRITZ STATION, YOU NEED:

A bottle (or two) of sparkling wine

A bottle (or two) of sparkling water

For each serving, fill a glass with ice, pour in a shot of aperitif bitters, fill the glass halfway with sparkling wine, then finish filling with sparkling water and garnish as desired. The red liquor will stay on the bottom of the glass until stirred, so give each drink a mix before serving, or serve with cocktail stirrers so guests can do so themselves.

Pre-Dinner Drinks: The Spritz Station

If serving cheese for more than two or three people, I do not like to serve a selection of cheeses. I know this is controversial, but hear me out. I love a good cheeseboard to share with a date. In fact, this is a favourite dinner substitute. But when there’s a crowd, that cheeseboard becomes mangled so fast. The blue cheese knife gets dunked in the Brie, or someone hogs all the Manchego. There are cheese crumbs on the floor. It’s not a thing for a crowd, even a small crowd.

Instead, I pick one big piece of cheese (on its own plate, with one knife) and stick to it. Less mess, less contamination, more equality. That doesn't mean you can't have a spread of things to go with it though; I add a plate of crackers, fruit (such as sliced apples, pears, figs, fresh grapes, dried figs or apricots), then something salty and briny, such as olives or pickles. If I'm feeling extra, I'll add honey or jam for drizzling too, but that can get messy, so tread carefully.

It’s steakhouse night, but you’re staying at home, and you can make everything almost entirely in advance. Searing individual steaks for each guest is just not a fun thing to do for a crowd, so instead I roast a whole New York strip roast. I season it with only salt and pepper and cook it to medium rare, exactly how I like my steak. Then each guest gets a slice topped with kelp butter, which is a fun way to season each steak with extra rich, salty-umami flavour. There’s no creamed spinach or a separate potato side at my home steakhouse, but there is one big, gloriously creamy potato, kale and butternut squash gratin, which can be made a day in advance, and then rewarmed with cheese on top just before serving.

FOR THE KELP BUTTER

SERVES 10 TO 12 New York Strip Roast is more commonly found in the US; it’s also known as strip loin roast, top loin roast and simply strip roast. We recommend asking your butcher for the closest cut.

A Steakhouse Dinner For a Crowd New York Strip Roast

NOTE: You’re going to need a lot of red wine to go with this meal.

55g best quality salted butter, at room 1temperaturetablespoon kelp flakes Place the softened butter and kelp flakes in a medium-sized bowl. Stir and mash with a wooden spoon until the kelp is thoroughly incorporated into the butter. Transfer the butter mixture to a piece of parchment paper, patting it into a sort of log shape towards one long end of the parchment. Pull the parchment up and over the butter to secure the log, then roll it tightly into a uniform cylinder about 4cm wide, twisting the parchment around each end like an old-fashioned sweet wrapper to secure. Chill until firm (at least 6 hours, or up to one week).

5 teaspoons flaky sea salt 5 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper Pat the meat dry and season each side with the salt and pepper. Let it sit for 15 to 30 minutes while the oven heats to 175˚C. In a roasting tin, cook the roast fat cap up. If you have an instant-read/probe thermometer, this is a good time to use one; insert it into the centre of the oven until it registers 52˚C for medium-rare, then put the meat in for 65 to 85 minutes. Watch the temperature from outside the oven so you can pull it out at exactly the right moment. Remove from the oven and let it stand for at least 15 minutes and up to 1 hour. Before serving, heat your oven grill. Grill the roast with the fat cap side facing up, for 5 to 10 minutes, until crispy and rewarmed. Slice and serve with the kelp butter. And don’t worry, you don’t have to let it rest again after reverse-searing; you already gave it a nice, good rest for the juices to redistribute.

FOR THE ROAST 2kg boneless steak

Pour the cream mixture over the vegetables. Cover tightly with foil and bake until tender, for 60 to 70 minutes. Let cool. At this point, you can chill the gratin Beforeovernight.serving, set the oven to grill. Top the gratin with the cheese and grill for 5 to 10 minutes, until bubbling and golden brown. Place the thinly sliced radish, fennel, celery and apple in a large bowl of iced water and let sit until ready to serve, for up to 3 hours. This keeps everything safe from oxygen exposure, which would cause browning. The ice also makes everything extra crispy, so don’t skip this step even if you’re serving in 30 minutes.

In a large deep pan or pot, heat the oil, add the kale, and cook for about 3 minutes, stirring often, until fully wilted. Season with 1 teaspoon of salt and let cool. In a medium pot, heat the cream, garlic, thyme, nutmeg, with a teaspoon of pepper and a tablespoon of salt until just boiling, then lower the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from the heat. Heat the oven to 175˚C. Arrange the sliced potatoes, kale, and squash in a 30cm casserole dish by making towers of the potatoes, squashing with your hands, then laying each tower on its side in the baking dish and stuffing kale in between the cracks throughout.

Preheat the oven to 175˚C with a rack in the middle. Line the bottom of a 23cm springform pan with baking paper. Butter and sugar the sides of the pan. Set a pot of water over a medium heat to simmer. Place the chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over, but not touching, the gently simmering water on the stove. Stir the chocolate occasionally with a rubber spatula until it’s fully melted, then remove the bowl from the heat and stir in the butter until smooth. Whisk the egg yolks with 100g of the sugar just until combined. Slowly whisk in the warm chocolate mixture. Whisk in the amaro and salt. In the bowl of a stand mixer, beat the egg whites for about 2 minutes, until foamy. Gradually add the remaining 100g of sugar and beat for about 5 more minutes, until glossy and soft peaks form that hold their shape but aren’t quite stiff. Very gently fold about a quarter of the beaten egg whites into the chocolate mixture to lighten it, then gently fold in the remaining whites. Scrape the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top. Set the springform pan on a baking tray and bake for about 30 to 40 minutes, until the top is puffed and cracked, and the centre is no longer wobbly. Be careful not to bake the cake beyond this point. Let the cake cool in the pan on a rack. The centre of the cake will sink as it cools, forming a sort of crater – this is good! Let the cake cool completely on a rack.

A signature recipe of the late Richard Sax [an iconic American chef, food writer and cookbook author], chocolate cloud cake is a flourless chocolate cake made with separated eggs so that the cake billows and puffs like a cloud, then collapses. My version is a little simpler than the classic, and a little denser. This is my go-to birthday cake, and I like to flavour mine with a shot of amaro, which lends a pleasantly haunting whisper of bitter spice to the chocolate. If amaro is not your thing, or you don’t have any in stock, try brandy instead, or swap in vanilla extract for a milder, classic flavour.

Pour 480ml of cold double cream into your biggest bowl, add your biggest whisk, and pass it to a friend. No one keeps the bowl for long –a few beats of the whisk and pass it on. By the time it gets all the way around the table the cream should be holding nice soft peaks. It’s usually hilarious, gets everyone awake and involved, and takes one task off your plate. When the cream is whipped but not too stiff,* stir in a tiny pinch of salt and a splash of vanilla extract, or sometimes a splash of brandy, and trade the whisk for a serving spoon (at this point in the night there are usually too many dirty dishes in piles in my kitchen to consider transferring the whipped cream to a serving bowl, but by all means, feel free to do so).

Stefano is the owner and host of White Deer San Lorenzo Mountain Lodge, our first stop and one of the area’s only private chalets. He’s also a man with an infectious passion for the surrounding mountains, the land and all its small-butmighty producers, whose love for their work can be tasted in every bite and sip.

Travel writer Kate Lough has her tastebuds tickled as she weaves her way through the Dolomites on a new ski safari, curated by Italy expert Merrion Charles We are gathered around a rustic wooden table, surrounded by shelves stacked with wine as we watch Stefano wind the Ferrari of meat slicers into action, producing perfect pieces of speck. Glasses of Cuvée Marianne are poured, and we toast to our Dolomiti ski safari.

It doesn’t take long to appreciate that the Dolomites offer its guests a new kind of luxury. Not fast cars and jeroboams, but a quietly authentic experience that’s increasingly hard to come by, and by no means limited to skiing. The lodge is beautiful but simple, traditional but stylish. Dinner is hearty and local –fonduta ravioli and venison with polenta – each course paired with wines (including the local lagrein grape) and finished off with Stefano’s homemade limoncello. We sleep easily, hearts and bellies full.

Our first day of skiing powered by an early breakfast of homemade yoghurts and jams, pastries and freshly squeezed juice covers the nearby Plan de Corones. We are being guided on our safari by local legend Mario Delmonego, who was born and bred in nearby Arabba. Humble and gentle, he is an encyclopedia of local schussing knowledge and knows everylastliftoperatorandrestaurateurinthearea.Thiscomes in very handy in the vast Dolomiti Superski area, which is stretched out over 16 separate ski regions and encompassing around 1,200km of slopes.

Our first day complete, we retreat to the lodge to make the most of its outdoor thermal pool overlooking the valley and its very welcome steam room, sauna and massage chair before another stellar dinner with brilliant company. The next morning, the blow of leaving the lodge is softened by the sound of a helicopter landing, ready to whisk us to Cinque Torri for our second ski day. The skies are a brilliant blue and thesceneryismesmerising.TheyoungpilotGabrieledropsus on the mountain top ahead of the first lifts opening, allowing us the bliss of having the slopes to ourselves.

After a generous bowl of gnocchi at mountainside hotel and restaurant Rifugio Averau, we are scooped up again by the chopper, swooping in and around mountain peaks before landing by Sofie Hut in Santa Cristina, where we sample the owner’s new amaro digestif and tiramisu. We spend a delightful afternoon traversing the slopes until the early evening, as we make our way down to Locanda degli Artisti. A boutique hotel run by the Rossi family, it’s nestled in the picturesque town of Canazei and the food is as much of a focus as the art. We feast that evening on endless courses of beautifully presented, locally sourced dishes, such as fried veal head, red prawns and pearl barley risotto.

The family also own and run our final stop, the secluded Rifugio Fuciade, which we reach after a day’s skiing in Arabba, with its wide pistes and some very appealing black runs for more advanced skiers. Typical of the region, these rifugios cook up sensational food in the middle of the mountain and have simple bedrooms –with postcard-perfect views – to roll into after dinner. Much like the night before, we are spoilt with another gastronomic experience that involves ciajoncie, a ravioli-style pasta filled with wild pears, figs and cinnamon that we walk offonahikethenextday. This is a ski safari that nourishes the soul and the stomach, with the most beautiful mountain scenery thrown in for good measure.

From the mountains to cities via the beach, Kate Lough picks three of the best destinations to visit this autumn and winter

Marrakech and the Atlas Mountains, Morocco Marrakech is a feast for the senses, where beguiling colours and scents envelop you. Start your Moroccan adventure by checking into El Fenn, the Pink City’s most iconic boutique hotel. Filled with exquisite spaces in a bold palette of yellow, pink and turquoise, its beautifully crafted bedrooms are matched only by the buzzing rooftop –with its pool and bar – which draws a stylish local crowd. From here, leave the hustle and bustle behind as you wind your way up to the foothills of the Atlas Mountains where you’ll find Kasbah Bab Ourika, one of life's true interpretations of an oasis. Stay in one of its new garden suites (ask for Room 30) and spend your days drifting between the dreamy poolside (framed by views of snowcapped mountains), roséfuelled lunches under the pergola and the incredible beauty of the grounds and vegetable gardens. Tel Aviv, Israel Autumn is the perfect time to visit Tel Aviv: hot enough for beach days, but cool enough to explore the city’s cultural delights too.

Villa Brown, Tel Aviv Villa Soro, San Sebastian

Bed down at the new Villa Brown Tel Aviv, which sits just steps from the beach in a revived 1980s building whose interior renovation was inspired by Italian holiday homes on the Mediterranean coast. By day, marvel at its Bauhaus architecture, stroll down one of the oldest and most renowned streets, Rothschild Boulevard, scour the flea market in Jaffa – the old town, where Soho House has opened a new outpost – and stop in at one of the city's many contemporary galleries, including The Noga. As night falls, Tel Aviv fizzes with energy, with endless watering holes and buzzy restaurants – Brut Bar and HaBasta should be high on your list. brownhotels.com Set of Four Zellige Espresso Cups Orange/Grey £45 San Sebastian, Spain

Now more than ever, design-conscious foodies should have San Sebastian on their radar, due to the reopening of the stylish Villa Soro. A former 19th-century family home, surrounded by gardens and containing cosy fires for the colder months, it's a unique place to stay in the Basque region – the culinary capital of Spain. Spend your days soaking up cultural hotspots such as Museo Chillida Leku and Manterola Gallery, before evenings dedicated to hopping around the city’s famed pintxos bars. If the weather allows it, cycle to the northwest of the city to La Concha beach, and stop in at the botanical gardens and Sagardoetxea, the Basque Cider Museum. San Sebastian is densely populated with Michelin-starred restaurants; book a table at famed Spanish chef Dani López’s Kokotxa, an unpretentious option that takes its name from a delicious regional dish: a fish-head stew. hotelvillasoro.com

94 | Looking for more inspiration? Visit oka.com/ideas M y boyfriend and I moved to Vancouver in 2018 and lived there for six months. Before that, we’d never been to Canada, and I had no preconceptions of it. At first, I was lonely and missing London, but by the end I never wanted to Vancouverleave.feelsvery cared for and you have a constant connection to nature. We were lucky to be there during autumn, when the streets are ablaze with colour. Wherever you are in the city, you can look down the street and there will be a mountain, or the sea, in the distance. Within a 20-minute walk of busy Downtown, you can find yourself watching the sunset on a beach, feeling like you’re on holiday. Or it’s a short drive to peaceful forests, where you can go swimming in lakes and hiking up mountains. We rented a tiny, ultra-modern house in Mount Pleasant [an East Side neighbourhood], which is a dream. It has streets with detached Americanstyle houses painted in different colours and lined with trees. Running alongside is Main Street, packed with great restaurants, coffee shops, breweries and vintage shops. All residential streets in Vancouver have these stylish cafes making coffee and sandwiches, with shelves of essential groceries, flowers and magazines – idyllic spots to while away an afternoon and people watch. Our favourites were The Federal Store, The Mighty Oak and Le Marché St. George. There are great interiors boutiques in the city, but you have to unearth them. Gastown [also Downtown] has Old Faithful Shop and Inform Interiors and there are great furniture thrift stores outside the centre with a mid-century, Palm Springs vibe. It’s also a real foodie city with plenty of restaurants that design lovers would appreciate.

We still talk about Lucky’s Doughnuts, Revolver Coffee, Pepino's Spaghetti House and the many bowls of ramen we ate around Robson Street.

At weekends, we’d rent a car, jump on a quick ferry and in no time at all, we’d be exploring the many small islands off the coast of Vancouver.

Each one would have deserted beaches and cosy cabins with roaring fireplaces, vintage quilts and views of the forest – it felt very Scandinavian.

We loved Galiano Island, where there’s an incredible restaurant among the trees called Pilgrimme that uses a lot of fermented, locally grown food on its experimental menu. We rented a cabin where the owner didn’t even have a key for the front door – it’s that safe.

It’s almost four years since we left and I still have such a longing for Vancouver. If I could take my friends, family and M&S with me, I would happily call it home.”

Larry David – because he’s just hilarious.

Dinner party game: Truth or dare... Dream guest list: Charlize Theron, I respect her so much, and she’s accomplished a lot beyond being an actor. Tom Riddle; I think he’s a bit misunderstood and I feel I need to get into the crux of it. I like a bad boy. I want to save him, basically.

TOP Housenka Lamp £295 (seen with Serigraph Shade 45cmDiax31cmH £175) Hongwu Pot Emerald £95 LEFT Calabash Rattan Table Lamp £325 (seen with Haruku Shade 45cmDiax31cm £175)

Best way to wake up: Puppy kisses from my cavapoo Saffron.

Pyjamas: Favourite pjs have to be Bocan Couture. I love to wear negligées with kimonos on top. I wear them out, too, with heels or boots in the winter. Night-time routine: Sleep tea from T2; it really helps me as I do have difficulty sleeping.

Breakfast: I don’t have breakfast. I’m doing intermittent fasting, so I usually eat between 11am–9pm. Or sometimes if I’m out for a late dinner I’ll do 12pm–10pm; you can choose the windows. I started doing it at the beginning of the year and I think it makes a difference; I feel better for it and I’m not snacking late at night anymore!

ABOVE Set of Two Rosalind Decorative Bowls £80

6pm cocktail: Gin martini. Nightcap: A really peaty whiskey, neat. Night in alone: Hanging out in my nightgown, with The Office (the US version) on in the background. Not very glamorous!

Takeaway: I love Keu [a London-based Vietnamese restaurant] – their banh mi are just so good.

Best way to greet guests: With a glass of champagne.

Tales of My Home KABRA-DAVIES

Photographs Trent McMinn

The founder of By Rotation, the luxury fashion rental platform and app, shares her home truths Kabra-Davies at home in her favourite Bocan Couture nightgown

Workspace: Although there were positives to working from home, I just love being in the office. We have an open-plan office with 10 desks just around the corner and I'm really happy being there with my team, by the window. I like to be involved and know what’s going on; I like for them to listen in on what I’m talking about too, it makes the team very aware of how the entire business is running.

And This Works Deep Sleep Pillow Spray, it really does work! I always give Saffron his night-time biscuit from Lily’s Kitchen – he’s obsessed with it; he’ll stare at me until he gets it. Oh, and the Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Serum.

Scent: Do Son by Diptyque. Reading nook: By the pool or on the beach, to be honest. That’s my vibe.

Caffeine hit: Green tea. Spot to relax: Solo in my big armchair with Saffron on my lap.

Framed photograph: Of my family, I don’t get to see them that much as they’re in Singapore and New York. Colour palette: Primary colours; they’re so fun. TodiscovermoreofKabra-Davies'worldvisit byrotation.comorfollowheronInstagram @arentyoueshita 98 |
