Introducing Tailored by OKA, our handmadeto-order sofa service, with more than 1,000 combinations to choose from T he brief was simple: to create exceptionally comfortable, well-crafted sofas that could be passed down for generations. However, finding a manufacturer to collaborate with—one that shared OKA’s ethos and passion—took time. Staffed by some of the most skilled craftspeople around, the family-run business we chose has been making furniture for decades in North Carolina.
The collection’s sofa, armchair and footstool shapes are a combination of classic and contemporary styles. Each design is available in stonewashed or laundered Belgian linen and our “clever” fabrics: clever velvet, which has all the tactile appeal of the traditional material, but won’t fade, mark or stain, and clever linen, a more durable, colorfast and moisture-wicking linen blend. Each is offered in a variety of shades, from a neutral oyster hue to a rich charcoal.

“I love mixing textures as much as anything. I think there’s something a bit boring about having all the same pillows in the same fabric; I like to see tonally what works together, and very often that’s mixing a very thick linen with silk or wool. In the past, I’ve had old rugs made into pillows and mixed them with some of our patterned and velvet designs.”

“Don’t be frightened of clashing prints; I quite like drama so I’m often looking for ways to put things together that you wouldn’t normally expect. Sometimes they work, and sometimes they don’t, but the important thing is to have fun with it. Mix up the scale and style of your prints for a real contrast; a small floral and a large stripe in complementary colors will look far more pleasing on the eye than two of the same design.”
