THEREFORE BE YE ALS O
READY
The year of 2017 has arrived – HAPPY NEW YEARS!
If I allow for reflection, I must admit that I never thought I would see another New Year. In fact, I have lost track of how many New Year’s Days have come and gone since I first said, “This is may well be the year of the rapture!” I distinctly recall the launch of 1988. At that time, Linda and I were serving Oklahoma City Capitol Hill as pastors. As we exited from the service one Sunday night, we discovered that an unknown visitor had placed a booklet on every auto in the parking lot. Perhaps you will remember the title, “88 Reasons Why Christ will Return in 1988.” Who could forget the conversation on the streets and in the media as we approached the end of 1999? According to numerous pundits, the end of the world was at hand! Thousands of people declared that our “computerized” world which came into existence during the 1900’s was only programed through 1999 and could not advance to 2000 without major catastrophes. I recall hearing that autos would no longer work, public water works would stop flowing, and life as we know it would come to an end. Now, another year has arrived and we are still here! But – may we never lose sight of the eminent return of Jesus Christ! This could be the year! “Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh” Matt 24:44. As we begin this New Year let us pause and give thanks to God for His abundant blessings upon our lives. God has been good to America – and God has blessed His church beyond description! “The Economist” recently reported: “If you had only $2,220 to your name (adding together your bank deposits, financial investments, and property holdings, and subtracting your debts) you might not think yourself terribly fortunate. But you would be wealthier than half the world’s population… If you had $71,560 or more, you would be in the top tenth. If you were lucky enough to own over $744,400 you could count yourself a member of the global 1% that voters everywhere are rebelling against.”
SECTION SIX PRESBYTER On September 26, 2016 a special business meeting for Section Six was held in Shawnee. The meeting was called for the purpose of electing a Sectional Presbyter to fill the unexpired term of Chad Brodrick who has served for the past 6 years. Chad and Nyree are presently serving as our District Church Ministries Director and had previously served as Pastor of Tecumseh First Assembly. Jeromye Jackson was elected as the new Presbyter for Section Six. Jeromye and Angi Jackson have served as Lead Pastors in Stroud since March of 2006. Prior to coming to Stroud they served as Youth and Associate Pastors in El Dorado Springs, MO and in Bristow, Pauls Valley, and Tulsa, Oklahoma. They are passionate about living their faith out and leading others to do the same. Jeromye enjoys spending time with his family and the great outdoors hunting, fishing, golfing, and riding on his motorcycle. He makes a mean BBQ Feast and loves to play his guitar and sing. Angi is committed to her family and loves using her creative giftings to make fun projects for family, friends, church, and community. She is an avid reader and a gifted communicator. Their daughter, Emily, is a middle school student who enjoys tap, jazz, and ballet dancing, plays the flute and piano, and loves to read. She has a Yorkie named Shaggy and an older sister, Elizabeth, and a little brother, Isaac, whom she and her family look forward to being with in heaven. We are delighted to welcome Jeromye and Angi to our Oklahoma Assemblies of God Leadership Team!
Thank you for the privilege of sharing this journey another year! Frank and Linda Cargill

MISSIONS

What do you believe about world missions? Our answer to that question will determine the trajectory of our church’s ministry and outreach. Frankly, the last thing our local assemblies need is another program. Church specialists tell us that healthy ministries start with decluttering the calendar and simplifying our strategy. And, to regulate our missions’ endeavors to a programmatic approach could, in fact, cheapen its biblical importance to what we do and how we function as the Body of Christ. One of the most impactful missions’ book I’ve read recently is authored by J. D. Greear, entitled Gaining By Losing: Why the Future Belongs to Churches that Send. He writes, “Discipleship is going from ‘mission field’ to ‘missionary’…In the Bible we find no gap between the call to follow Jesus and the call to engage in mission… To that end, every ministry in the church – and not just the ‘missions department’ – must ask: ‘How is our ministry leading people into God’s global mission?’” Greear goes on to explain, for instance, how their church’s high school and college students are challenged to serve for one month on a missions teams during the summer as well as each small group to adopt a city service-evangelism project and an international missionary. In other words, consider the fact that every church ministry department should be driven globally. After we answer the first question about our belief regarding world missions, maybe the next question should be the following: How does/should our belief about global evangelism translate into the entire vision and mission of the local church? We do not involve ourselves in getting the Gospel around the world because it fits our ministry strategy; we participate to be obedient to the command of our Lord. As we enter a new year, let’s pray the prayer of Bob Pierce,

founder of Samaritan’s Purse, who wrote the following words in his Bible after visiting suffering children on an island in Korea: “Let my heart be broken with the things that break the heart of God.” The answer to that prayer will always supersede any ministry program or department. person with the most responsibility, the most direct reports, the most influence, or the most experience. The most valuable person on your team, in some respects, is the newest member on your team. Teams, regardless of size and makeup, have a tendency to build systems and practices in such a way that over time they become blind to seemingly obvious and simple possibilities for improvement. New team members, if allowed, can bring great insight. New team members do not know the history and context or the organization. New people do not yet know the culture of the

For reasons that seem obvious, this newness can create problems integrating, but for reasons that seem less obvious, new team members can be a tremendous source of fresh insight. The longer you lead your team the more entrenched your perspective becomes, and the less open to new ways of looking at things you become. Change is hard. The processes and systems you have in place took serious effort to achieve. When new people come on board and challenge those processes and systems it can feel uncomfortable, and at times personal. Most of the time, however, it is not personal. It is just new to them, and they are trying to understand ‘why’ things are the way they are. Wise leaders take the time to listen to the newest folks on the team, whether volunteer or paid. Their perspective can be valid. They may see things we have become blind to. They may question some unnecessary things we have become used to. Wise leaders understand that while new people do not have the full perspective
of the organization, the perspective they do have is still extremely valid and worth considering. There may be legitimate reason to keep things the way they are, but there are also legitimate reasons to be sure you are always taking in the best and most objective information possible. If you want to hear something fresh about your church, your team, or your organization; spend some time with the newest team member and give them permission to share some insight with you. You might be surprised at what you find out. And what you might find out could change the team for the better.

CHURCH
THE WAY W E W IN
MATTERS Throughout my life, I have enjoyed watching the game of football. To see a team work together for the common goal of scoring a touchdown is inspiring. I also like to watch a coach and his staff, strategize and make calls, which help the team achieve its intended goal.
While I have watched teams achieve greatness and others sink into defeat, it is always interesting to see how the teams and coaches evolve and make changes in order to get the win. Yet over the years we have witnessed organizations finding tactical and at times, unethical ways of getting that win. Everything from spying to deflated footballs, the desire to win overpowers the ethical standards that rule the game and causes the fans to question the integrity of the game.
It is easy for us to look at the wins that others accumulate in their ministry and do what we can to emulate those for ourselves. While there is merit in learning from those who are doing well, we must never discount the leadership of the Holy Spirit who can not only lead the what, but also the how. He can guide you toward the win that will fit who you are as a minister and what your church and community needs. Ultimately we will be rewarded for what we do and HOW we do His will! My prayer for 2017 1) May my attitude be saturated in true humility. 2) May my spirit hunger for His leadership. 3) May my intentions be founded in integrity. 4) May my hope rest in Him alone.
While I understand the desire to win, we recognize that how we win does matter in the end! As ministers we find ourselves locked in a battle with the enemy, with ungodliness, and the everyday battles of life. At times it seems that it is a struggle to get a win in the challenges we face. So what do we do? In a desire to get the win in all areas of our lives and ministries it is easy for us to try and create tactical advantages which God did not design for us to use.
461 RESPONSE
God’s abilities surpass Man’s best! Beginning a New Year provides an opportunity for us to make plans for our personal lives and ministries. It also gives us an opportunity to become acutely aware of the leadership of the Holy Spirit who already has a handle on your unique ministry, church, community, and purpose in life. WOMEN’S
LAD IES INVE ST IN G FOR E T E RN IT Y
ETERNITY Happy New Year Girlfriends! Hello from your Oklahoma District Women’s Ministries Office. What an incredible night we are believing God for in all 14 Sections of our State on Friday, January 20, 2017. This is your Personal Invitation from me, to come and attend the LIFE Rally nearest you. Please see the Promo Poster for time and place. We will once again be inspired with a fresh vision for missions with dynamic speakers, good food and fun Girlfriend time at each Event! A lot of work and prep are going into each Rally and we hope to see you there. As most of you know, LIFE Pledges are the very “enablement” of our District Women’s Department to support missions on an ongoing basis. These funds are our Life-Blood to be able to stand with and support over 100 missionary families. It’s because of our Oklahoma Ladies’ continued giving that we are able to do so. THANK YOU! 2016 was an incredible year of Financial Favor but we are praying and believing God for a “Doubling” in 2017! With ten missionaries home on furlough and our Special Project with Kirk and Karla Ford, IMM SPAIN – “Women of the Bible” our Goal is to get JESUS on every screen in the 21st Century, to the “Least Reached Nations.” The stories of Ruth, Rahab, Tamar and Bathsheba are the Lineage of Christ. These women were Refugees, Prostitutes (Trafficked), or Sexually Abused Women and yet, God had an incredible plan for their lives and even included them in the Ancestry of Jesus Christ! JESUS is not ashamed of us! He loves us…No matter where we’ve been! WHAT A POWERFUL MESSAGE OF HOPE AND HELP to put in Russian, Arabic and French. These topics are some of the most current and relevant in our world today. Friends, (I Cor. 3:8), says: “The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor.” I love this! Essentially that means… Some Go. Some Send. All are Equally Rewarded. In God’s economy everyone has an opportunity to be a part and to be blessed. When we open our hand to God of what’s in our sphere of resources, He will automatically open His mighty hand to us. It’s an amazing master plan and you Girls obviously “Get it!” If your Church has not currently been a part of L.I.F.E., won’t you and the ladies of your church, please prayerfully consider making a LIFE Pledge for 2017? Thank you! As I have said, “When the crowns are passed out in heaven, I’m convinced those in full-time missionary work, who have left houses and homeland for the sake of the Call, very well COULD put us all to shame…unless WE ARE SENDERS!” Thank you for your support of missions and for being Ladies Investing For Eternity!

YOUTH
SY NE RGY C ON FE RE N C E
COMMIT We had an incredible launching of SYNERGY Youth Leaders Conference in February of this last year. We saw almost 500 student pastors, volunteer leaders, and student leaders from all across Oklahoma come together for the weekend.
This year’s focus is COMMIT! How many times have we halfway committed to something only to see it fail. To be even more transparent, how many times have you or I caught ourselves looking so far down the road that we did not commit to where we were at the present. John Maxwell paints an adequate picture of this: “Until I’m committed there is a hesitancy, a chance to draw back. But the moment I definitely commit myself, then God moves also and a whole stream of events begin to erupt, all matter of unforeseen incidents, meetings, persons, and material assistance that I could have never dreamed would come my way, begin to flow toward me the moment I make a commitment.” --John Maxwell As we come together this February, let’s focus on committing to where we are at whatever we are doing for this season and see what God will do with our Commitment! Please take advantage of this opportunity to bless your leaders in a very tangible and affordable way. Last year several youth pastors used this weekend as a retreat for their team! Like last year, there will be sessions geared towards volunteer lay leaders, as well as, a healthy dose of sessions for full-time student ministry pastors. SHIPS Often times when the New Year rolls around, it is often met with resolutions and promises of a better year than the last. It usually begins with promises of eating healthier, dieting, and taking better care of yourself, just to name a few. For some it may be spiritual things such as spending more time with God, digging deeper into His word, or really making that promise to read through the Bible in a year.
In the spring of 1519, Hernando Cortés and his Spanish fleet set sail towards the west. They were on a mission to conquest and colonize what is now known as Mexico. They landed on the eastern shore with great dreams of progress and excitement about their mission. However, life was not at all what they had dreamed of. Many hardships and unexpected tragedies fell upon those who were with him. His men began to murmur and complain, “Let’s sail back to our homeland. It is too difficult for us to go on where we are.”
Retreat is not an option there is no looking back.
If we want to truly achieve our goals and dreams that we have proclaimed for the New Year, we must do just that--WE MUST BURN THE SHIPS! Retreat is not an option there is no looking back. So in this New Year of 2017, set goals, dream big, and strive to accomplish what God has placed on your heart. Look forward and not behind. Press on towards your goals this coming year!
2017 KIDS CAMP CLINIC On February 18th at Spring Creek AG in Edmond, Oklahoma Children’s Ministries will be hosting a Kids Camp Clinic beginning at 1:30 p.m. We will be talking about all aspects of getting ready for Kids Camp, as well as the whole camp experience, but mostly about the new process for registering for camp online. For more details and to reserve your spot, give Bev a call in the OCM office at 405-475-1172.
Upon hearing this Cortés sent a group of men back to their fleet. Not to get it prepared for the journey back to Spain--he ordered his men to burn the ships. In Philippians 3:10-14, we are encouraged to press on to take a hold of everything that Jesus has for us, forget those things that are behind us, and strive ahead to what He has in store for us. You’re probably thinking, “Destroying their ships? That doesn’t make sense.” What would have “made sense” is for Cortés to keep a ship or two. But Cortés was on a mission and he knew that the only way to keep himself or his men from quitting on the mission was to take that option off the table. What he did was force himself and his men to either succeed or die trying.
