Urban Fare is an upscale grocery store with a coffee bar, restaurant, catering service, gourmet gift baskets and flowers, and even an in-store concierge-- eschewing the standard layout of the traditional big-box warehouse stores. It’s not the kind of place where you pay a loonie to rent a shopping cart the size of a Paris apartment, then push it up and down endless aisles laid out in perfectly parallel rows. The shopping experience at Urban Fare is more like meandering around a village market where similar foods are grouped together in little boroughs that flow into each other; areas where tables are sometimes round, display cases may be curved, and counters might be tucked into corners. The entire dining space has an “upscale orchard” aesthetic with feature walls constructed from stacked apple crates, fresh fruit and veggies piled high in tin buckets and wicker baskets, and display tables that look like they’ve been made from recycled barn wood. Urban Fare… Food is our passion and so much more!

WELCOME TO KELOWNA & THE OKANAGAN VALLEY Surrounded by mountains, valleys, lakes and even a desert, the Okanagan Valley provides you with a breathtaking experience like nowhere else Technology, agriculture, vineyards, golf courses, lakes and of course… beaches are what you will find in Kelowna and The Okanagan Valley. More than just sun, sand & water, you will also find shopping, golfing, lifestyle and wineries. This vibrant valley has so much more to offer than most people realize, things like direct flights from Kelowna (YLW) to Los Angeles (LAX). Nourished by a hot, sunny, dry climate, cool nights and soil well suited for growing grapes, the Okanagan Valley and its mountainsides have become one of Canada’s foremost wine producing regions. The Kelowna area is home to more than a dozen wineries and most of the Okanagan Wine Country’s vineyards offer wine tours that teach visitors the art

of the craft. WINE ROUTE signage, showing a cluster of grapes, directs visitors to “not be missed” wineries from major roadways. Orchards and vineyards produce some of the country’s best fruit and wines. The spring, summer and fall wine festivals offer hundreds of activities dedicated to wine making, tasting and touring the region’s many wineries. With an average of 2,000 hours of sunshine every year, warm summers with low humidity and mild winters, the Okanagan Valley and its surrounding hillsides are Canada’s fruit basket. Nestled on the eastern shore of the BC Interior’s Okanagan Lake and cradled by the slopes of the Monashee Mountains, the City of Kelowna is a sundappled oasis renowned for superb four-season recreation and retreat.

Pine-fringed lakes, gardens bursting with blossoms, beautiful golf courses, fertile orchards and vineyards, sandy beaches and first class amenities make the area a vacation favourite. The water taunts you with boating, stand up paddle boarding, waterskiing & wakeboarding, swimming, fishing, waterslides and rope swings, while the high country entices with hiking, cycling, horseback riding and skiing. Three major ski resorts - Big White, Silver Star and Apex - are within a one hour drive.
dozens of public access points) with grassy picnic areas and concession stands. The superb growing conditions have also helped grow a thriving golf industry, and Kelowna’s 17 courses offer play that stretches from March through November. The region’s golf courses enjoy one of the longest, driest and sunniest seasons in the country. From the challenge of a championship track, to the casual fun of 18-hole putting courses and a bounty of choices in between, Kelowna is a golfer’s paradise.
Kelowna’s residents enjoy a lifestyle that balances superb and affordable modern amenities with country retreats and yearround family recreation. Many people, from young families and professionals to retirees, are settling in the region for the enviable lifestyle, exceptional amenities, and strong sense of close-knit community.
Throughout the region, fruit and vegetable stands are an Okanagan tradition. These roadside stalls offer the chance to purchase and enjoy some of the freshest and best quality produce to be found anywhere; no wonder, as the delicious offerings are often grown on the hills right behind. Originally inhabited by the Interior Salish people, the Central Okanagan has long been a bountiful place to live. Father Charles Pandosy, an Oblate priest, settled near Mission Creek

in 1859. The mission he established is now a provincial historic site. Kelowna was laid out as a town in 1892; As fruit growing and ranching propelled growth, it was then incorporated as a city in 1905. The mild climate has made Kelowna one of Canada’s preferred places to live and play with a year-round population of approximately 120,000, it has grown to become the largest city in the Okanagan Valley. The city celebrates its arts and culture with a thriving Cultural District that includes galleries, museums, theatres, Lake City Casino, unique shops and fine dining. The Rotary Centre for the Arts is the heartbeat of the district and provides a space for artists, actors, dancers and musician to gather, practice and perform. Prospera Place, a 6,800-seat multipurpose facility in the heart of the

city, is home to the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League (WHL) and attracts major entertainers and events. The city’s vibrant retail and commercial base reaches a trading area of 450,000, making it the largest centre for business, commerce, retail and health care services between Greater Vancouver and Calgary, Alberta. As the biggest business centre in the Okanagan, Kelowna is home to most larger chain retailers and several excellent shopping malls. Kelowna’s downtown is a dynamic and bustling place with a village like atmosphere and a wide array of shops and boutiques for the latest fashions, accessories, and trends for the body, mind and home. The heart of downtown is Bernard Street, with shops and stores also on Pandosy, Ellis and Water Streets. The downtown core has just undergone
a major revitalization, with new larger sidewalks, modern lighting and an overall feeling of cleanliness and happiness. Take a walk and set course for the new and improved downtown Kelowna and be sure the check out the new waterfront boardwalk and marina area. Adventure seekers congregate in Kelowna to get their blood pumping on land, sea or air. Popular recreational pursuits include hiking, cycling, horseback riding, water skiing, wake boarding, parasailing, sky diving, kite boarding and fishing. Of course there are winter options too, which consist of snowboarding, skiing, snowshoeing and ice fishing. There are nearly 200 lakes within an hour’s drive of the city teeming with Rainbow Trout, Kokanee Salmon, Whitefish, Burbot and Carp, among other varieties. Canoeing, kayaking and stand up paddle boarding

are popular on Okanagan Lake and other bodies of water. If you are looking for adventure on the water, boat rentals and scenic lake cruises are both available. Highway 97 is the major north-south route in the valley, while the four lane Highway 97C offers excellent connections to Highway 5, the Coquihalla and the Lower Mainland. Kelowna is BC lnterior’s transportation hub. Kelowna International Airport is the 11th busiest airport in Canada seeing over 1.44 million passengers last year, with direct departures to Los Angeles (soon San Francisco), Seattle, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, and Toronto. Clearly it is easier than ever to get to Kelowna and the Okanagan Valley. Whether you chose to drive, fly or ride your bike to get here, you will be greeted with open arms. Welcome, enjoy your time here!

WELCOME TO PENTICTON, OLIVER, OSOYOOS & THE SOUTH OKANAGAN The greatest way to get a feel for Penticton, Oliver, Osoyoos & the South Okanagan is to fly over it. A bird’s eye view really helps you to grasp how magical this region really is. It is well represented with summer fun, lakes, beaches, and river floating. But, it also becomes very evident that there is a huge agricultural presence here. Obviously wine is at the forefront, but keep in mind that fruits and vegetables are abundant and have been around a lot longer than the grapes! The actual boundary for the South Okanagan is between Peachland and Summerland. This hilly country provides a beautiful backdrop for those communities that are dotted along the shoreline of Lake Okanagan. Hot, dry summers and mild winters are the ingredients that make these lucky places the South Okanagan. From Summerland all the way down to the US border, you will find Osoyoos and several “must see” destinations in between. Travelling south from Peachland
16 2014/2015
along Highway 97 you will stumble upon the quaint community of Summerland. Summerland is a unique and friendly community that has it all. From art galleries and studios, to wine tours and tastings, Summerland also boasts wonderful attractions like the Kettle Valley Steam Railway and the Summerland Ornamental Gardens. Don’t forget your sunscreen, because Summerland has one of the best beaches in the Okanagan—Sun Oka Beach. Summerland’s vibrant business core features an English Tudor influence and delights every shopper with a wide variety of unique shops and boutiques as well as eateries. Staying in Summerland is easy with several lovely bed and breakfast establishments, motels and a resort hotel right on the lake. Deep agricultural roots are obvious in the picturesque orchards & vineyards, as the visitor is welcomed to a huge variety of
fruit stands and market gardens. Recently, a fabulous wine tour route has emerged in Summerland, offering spectacular scenery as you wind your way through the countryside. The Bottleneck Drive wine route is truly an experience featuring 12 wineries, award winning wines and Summerland hospitality. Next stop is the largest city centre in the South Okanagan, Penticton. The city of 46,000 (greater area) is named for the Salish phrase which means “a place to stay forever,” and many have apparently taken that advice. Every year, thousands spend part of their holidays here and Penticton continues to grow at a healthy pace. Canada’s “Peach City” has long been a transportation hub; in its early days, stern-wheelers plied the lakes and the Kettle Valley Railway had its headquarters here. With its interesting shops and fabulous restaurants, colourful Front Street, Penticton’s first business corridor, is a popular place to wander and grab a bite. Antique Row is a place to search for the unusual. The city’s dual lakefronts are popular destinations for recreation, with sandy beaches and water sports, amusement centres, miniature golf courses, water slides

and go-cart tracks. More than a dozen golf courses (including 7 championship courses), are found near Penticton, offering challenging golf, and excellent views of pocket desert, lakes, and lush farm lands. Apex Mountain Resort, just southwest of Penticton, is one of the three prime ski and snowboard destinations in the Okanagan Valley. Penticton is a place that loves to celebrate the creative spirit. ln August, the annual Peach Festival (largest summer festival in the Okanagan) gets taste buds watering. The sound of jazz fills the air in midSeptember, when the annual Pentastic Jazz Festival makes beautiful music. Penticton thrives on tourism so accommodation is plentiful and diverse. A scenic twenty minute drive Northeast of Penticton brings you to the tranquil community of Naramata. Surrounded by rolling hills, blanketed with lush orchards and vineyards, this quiet community invites travelers to escape from the hurried pace of life. Visitors to Naramata have their choice of elegant and intimate accommodations. From cozy B&B’s and winery guest houses along the bench, to the luxurious Naramata Heritage lnn and Spa right in the village; all
okanaganvisitor.ca 17
immerse their guests in the serenity that is Naramata. As one of Canada’s premier grape growing regions, Naramata is home to over 20 boutique wineries. This route is a must see for those seeking a unique wine touring experience and can be traveled by car or for the adventurous, by bike on the Kettle Valley Trail. Relax and stroll down the quaint streets of Naramata lined with boutiques, antique stores and artisan workshops. Spend a day enjoying sun and sand at Wharf Park or Manitou Park & Beach. A little bit inland, you will find Kaleden, a historic community located only a few moments drive south of Penticton. This picturesque community, made up of vineyards and orchards, overlooks Skaha Lake, and beckons visitors to relax at the excellent beaches and stay at one of the quaint bed & breakfasts. Back on Highway 97 and headed south, your next find will be in Okanagan Falls. A charming little town located on the southern end of Skaha Lake, and was originally known as Dogtown, from the Okanagan First Nations word Skaha, meaning dog, after which the nearby Skaha Lake was named. Okanagan Falls was later renamed after the small twin waterfalls that were once part of a scenic natural landscape located at the end of the lake
18 2014/2015
where it emptied into the Okanagan River. The falls were reduced to a series of gentle rapids in the 1950s with the construction of a flood control dam to control the level of water flowing south in the Okanagan River. Okanagan Falls is best visited for its tasty pleasures, as it is home to the largest icecream cone seller in the valley, Tickleberry’s. Once you have finished your ice cream, continue chugging through the orchards and vineyards until you hit Oliver. The town of Oliver is surrounded by lakes, mountains and lush orchards, and is located 25 minutes north of the US border at the tip of the Sonoran Desert. Established in 1921 by BC Premier “Honest” John Oliver, the town was intended as a settlement for veterans of World War I. The Premier’s plan included an irrigation system which transformed Canada’s only desert into a thriving region of orchards and farms. Summer visitors today enjoy stopping at the many fruit stands along the highway to enjoy apricots, cherries and peaches at the peak of perfection. With the largest concentration of vineyards and wineries in BC, Oliver has earned the title of “Wine Capital of Canada.” A very dry, mild climate, access to irrigation and gravelly soil combine to create optimum grape growing conditions which have attracted wine makers from all walks of life. Wine tourists in the Okanagan
should not miss visiting the wineries along the “Golden Mile” and “Black Sage Bench.” Spend a day kayaking, boating, fishing or windsurfing at Tuc-El-Nuit Lake, Gallagher Lake or Vaseaux Lake. Hit the links or the trails with both golf courses and exceptional hiking and biking nearby. Keremeos, is accessible from both Oliver and Osoyoos. It was originally inhabited by the Salish people, and was incorporated 1956. The Similkameen native name, “Keremeyeus” which meant ‘the creek that cuts its way through the flats’ was the source for the village’s present day name. As the self-titled “Fruit Stand Capital of Canada”, Keremeos produces all sorts of soft fruits and vegetables grown in the areas warm climate, and vineyards and wineries are quickly being added as the Valley’s winegrowing potential is being recognized. The last town in the South Okanagan is Osoyoos. With sandy hills, tumbleweeds, rattlesnakes and hot, hot summers-- now you’re in desert country. Pronounced O-Sue-Use, an Indian word meaning ‘the place where two lakes come together’, the town is located 10 minutes from the US border. Canada’s warmest freshwater lake, Osoyoos Lake, even extends into US territory. Osoyoos is Canada’s hot spot, often reaching temperatures in excess of
Destination Osoyoos
38°C (100°F) in the summer time. Spending time in and around the lake is the best way to keep cool and have fun. Relax and enjoy the parks and vast expanse of beaches, or check out one of the local marinas for boat rentals and lessons in kite boarding, stand up paddle boarding, water skiing and wakeboarding. Golf courses this far south enjoy an even longer season than Kelowna, most often remaining open February through November but sometimes are available year round. Osoyoos offers two venues for visitors to learn and experience the heritage and unique landscape of the area. Guests of The Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Centre enjoy self-guided interpretive trails or take part in interactive programs featuring rare insects, reptiles and amphibians. The Osoyoos Desert Centre spans over 66 acres and introduces the public to rare plant and wildlife. From the lake basins and hundreds of sandy beaches, up to the high plateaus and mountains that cradle the Okanagan Valley, this is a place that tempts you with numerous options. Explore the South Okanagan and discover the culture and treasures that surround you in every direction.

For the finest fruits, vegetables, flowers, arts & crafts, visit one of the many Farmer’s Markets that fill the valley. Come support the local artisans and farmers for a real Okanagan experience. Or pit stop along the way at any of the dozens of roadside fruit and veggie stands. Launching Your Ultimate Okanagan Experience! okanaganvisitor.ca 31
GOLF A sublime balance of challenge and spectacular scenery Welcome to golf in Kelowna and the South Okanagan. There are 50 golf courses within an hour’s drive of Kelowna. Every one of the golf courses here offers picturesque backdrops of orchards and vineyards, rolling hills, rivers and shimmering lakes; and you can also experience golfing through desert-like terrain or alongside lakes and canyons. There are few places in Canada that share those stats. The Thompson Okanagan has award winning golf courses of every style, whether you are looking for a links course, mountain course, or desert course, this area has it all. Enjoy every hole with a smile on your face. This kind of fun will keep you coming back again and again. Lee Trevino once said “If you’re caught on a golf course during a storm and are afraid of lightning, hold up a 1-iron. Not even God can hit a 1-iron”. Luckily, bad weather
32 2014/2015
is rarely an issue here! With over 2000 hours of sunshine a year shining down on the greens, it’s no wonder that Kelowna is Canada’s top golf destination. The region has received many accolades including– “Best New Golf Course”, “Best Canadian Golf City” and “Top Region in Canada for Golf.” There are now over 250 golf courses in British Columbia, 50 of which are centrally located around Kelowna, offering a wealth of unique golfing experiences for the beginner golfer and the experienced pro. With a golf season that runs March through November, the sound of “fore” is understandably an Okanagan tradition. Stretching from south of Vernon, through Kelowna and onto the U.S. border, in Osoyoos there are dozens of golf courses, something for every skill level. Each course will give you a new look and a new test for your game. The courses in the
Kelowna Springs Golf Course
northern end of the Okanagan will be lush with deep green grass and lots of water hazards. While the courses further south will provide you with more of a desert style of course with lightning fast greens and sand traps everywhere. There is so much variety from course to course that you can enjoy many of them just once, or play them regularly and find something new almost every time. Most veteran Okanagan golfers will get up at dawn to play their round before the day heats up. Here’s a tip! Do not wear a black golf shirt if you plan on being on the golf course after 11AM. Rest assured, you will regret it! Throughout Kelowna & the South Okanagan, there are several courses that have been created by world-class designers. Including courses by Jack Nicklaus (Golden Bear Design), Les Furber, Bill Robinson, Graham Cooke, Fred
34 2014/2015
Couples, and Greg Norman (Greg Norman Golf Course Design). Avid golfers will find unique and exciting holes awaiting them on every fairway. Spectacular views, prestigious courses, and oneof-a-kind experiences make Kelowna and the surrounding area the ideal golf destination. To avoid any disappointment, please be sure to call ahead and book your tee times, especially during the busier summer months. And be sure to show up early. Almost every course in the Okanagan has great food services for before, during and after your round. They also provide great practice facilities to help you hone your skills before you play. Pitching, putting and driving are all at your disposal. Warming up is important, but save the great shots for the plush fairways and lightning quick greens.

WINE & SPIRITS Okanagan wines and spirits have shattered all expectations as the world aquires a fondness for local vintages While this area has commonly been referred to as ‘Napa North’, it is now known across the world as the Okanagan, a burgeoning wine region in its own right. The Okanagan Valley has grown up and pushed its way to the top of the wine industry. There are many medals and accolades hanging from various bottles from the northern edge of the Okanagan all the way to the US border. The Okanagan Valley is a rare stretch of land-- desert, semi-arid in the northern half, and fully arid in the hotter southern half. The difference between high daytime and low nighttime temperatures provides much needed acidity for the production of high quality winemaking grapes. Winemaking in the Okanagan Valley first gained popularity with white wines like Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Gerwurztraminer and Viognier, however in recent years

there has been a surge in red vinifera vines. The climate and soil are perfect for growing Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah grapes. Lake Country (north of Kelowna) is home to a handful of remarkable wineries and the Scenic Sip Wine Trail including Gray Monk & Ex Nihilo. Overlooking the airport, is Ancient Hill Winery, sitting on land that was planted with grapes more than 60 years ago. Take the time to experience Kelowna’s Fab Five Wine Trail with several excellent wineries located within the orchards of East Kelowna. CedarCreek Estate Winery, along with Summerhill Pyramid Winery, St. Hubertus & Oak Bay Estate Winery, and Tantalus Vineyards make up the Lakeshore Wine Route, following the shores of Lake Okanagan.

After enjoying so many wineries, take a break and make your way to Okanagan Spirits (locations in both Kelowna and Vernon), a designated World Class Distillery. As part of the Downtown Grapes & Grains route, Okanagan Spirits is joined by BC’s first winery, Calona Vineyards, as well as the newly renovated Sandhill Wines, and craft brewery, Tree Brewing Company. The Westside Wine Trail in West Kelowna is home to some of the most accomplished winemakers in the valley including ‘Winery of the Year’ Mission Hill, and Quails’ Gate, one of Canada’s top producers of premium VQA wines. As you head south towards Penticton, don’t miss the hidden gems of Peachland, as well as the 12 wineries along Bottleneck Drive, the wine route encompassing Summerland. There are an endless number of wineries within and around the communities of Penticton, Oliver and Osoyoos. The vineyards of Penticton and the Naramata Bench (the east side of Okanagan Lake, north of Penticton) are home to over 30

of the most acclaimed wineries in the region, and the Skaha Bench has a couple award-winning wineries that should definitely to be at the top of your wine tour list. The small community of Okanagan Falls is home to 10 wineries and many more vineyards, while neighbouring Oliver is the ‘Wine Capital of Canada’. Nestled in between Oliver & Osoyoos lies two very popular spots; to the west is the Golden Mile, soaking up the morning sunshine, and to the east lies the Black Sage Bench, basking in the afternoon heat. Osoyoos has several wineries located in and around the town itself, including North America’s first aboriginal winery, Nk’Mip Cellars. Make sure that you take the time to enjoy the weather and unparalleled scenery that creates these wonderful vineyards. These hills and plateaus are teeming with grapes and vines, row after row of them. A small tour and you will begin to understand the magnitude of the wine industry and the positive affect it has on the entire region.

EXPLORING THE VALLEY This valley is a magnificent sanctuary, the ideal mix of mountainsides rolling perfectly into crystal clear blue lakes, flanked by orchards, vineyards and yes, fairways! In the summer, sandy beaches are the hot spot (literally), and they do not disappoint!
72 2014/2015
From Kelowna by car, touring choices radiate out in three main directions – North on Highway 97, which heads for Lake Country, Vernon and Salmon Arm, South on Highway 97 which crosses Okanagan Lake (at Kelowna) and then undulates down towards Penticton, Oliver & Osoyoos and finally Highway 33, which climbs into the high Kettle Valley country to the South and East. It’s an arid landscape of hoodoos, orchards and vineyards, ponderosa pine forests, peaks and valleys, lakes and highlands. The diversity and the choices are exceptional. Welcome to Kelowna and the South Okanagan.

PENTICTON & NARAMATA Where lakeside lounging meets hillside harvesting Penticton is truly something special, especially in the summer months. This is the consummate “hot spot”, as the town site is lucky enough to have lakes on both sides of it. This is a real beach community, glorious hot summer days followed by slightly cooler, relaxing summer nights. Of course, while being surrounded by so much water, boating, fishing and water sports are all at the forefront of popular things to do- floating down the canal that connects Okanagan Lake and Skaha Lake is a popular choice, embraced by locals and visitors to the area alike. For winter sports enthusiasts, Apex Mountain Resort is the locals choice. On the northern edge of town is Okanagan Lake and the beach that runs along Beach Ave, is simply amazing. It stretches for a few kilometers and is directly across the street from a long row of hotels, B&B’s, restaurants and services. It’s like having paradise downtown! South of the city is Skaha Lake which gives you a similar experience, yet somehow, totally different. Lush parks with great shade trees and picnic tables flank the beach. This spot is more of a destination, meaning you can’t walk out of your hotel room and suddenly be at the beach. At both locations, the beaches slowly slip into

their respective lakes, perfect for wadding in the water with kids, or going a little deeper and heading out for a swim. Now Naramata is a different story all together! Located on the eastern shores of Okanagan Lake, this region is world famous for producing some of the finest wines around. It is easy to spot the terraced benches above the lake with row upon row of many different varieties of grapes. The vineyards have discovered that if you build it, they will come! Many of these businesses now have elaborate tasting rooms, restaurants and guesthouses. There is a whole lot more to owning a winery these days, with added features like concerts with big name musicians, helicopter tours, weddings and fine dining. To say that the game has changed is the last 20 years would be a major understatement. Many towns in this region share similar agricultural traits. Rows of grapes, orchards and very fertile lands are enjoyed by visitors and embraced by locals. Alas, there is so much more to do here than just sit on the beach drinking wine, watching the sun go down, but sometimes, that is all you really need!

OKANAGAN FALLS A small community with a big heart An hours drive south of Kelowna lands you in the heart of wine country. There are many wine labels that have addresses in Okanagan Falls. The rich soil, bright hot days and cool nights are the things that make grape vines go wild. Okanagan Falls sits on the northern edge of The Sonoran Desert. Wildlife and vineyards are the two most common things here.
in the South Okanagan. As a result fruit orchards and other crops started to flourish. Numerous fruit orchards were replaced with vineyards in the 80’s when interests turned towards grape growing for wine. Today, Okanagan Falls is pushing its way to the top as a burgeoning wine community with several well-known labels in the area, along with a few newer operations as well.
Nestled on the southern shore of Skaha Lake, Okanagan Falls was originally named Dog Town after the lake’s original namesake. It wasn’t until 1930 when the lake was renamed with the Shuswap word for dog, “Skaha.” Subsequently, the town was renamed for the twin falls that once fell from where the lake empties into the Okanagan River. The falls were reduced to a series of rapids in the early 1950’s after rocks were blasted to make way for the floodgates.
Vaseaux Lake is located to the south, as the rivers flow. Vaseaux Lake plays home to dozens of varieties of birds and also attracts the finest migratory birds. The protected marshland has a wooden boardwalk that allows visitors to stroll in and around natural plant and animal life. You will also find benches and a bird blind that make bird watching a delight.

OLIVER The Wine Capital of Canada With the largest concentration of vineyards and wineries in BC, Oliver has earned the title of “Wine Capital of Canada.” A very dry, mild climate, access to irrigation and gravely soil combine to create optimum grape growing conditions, which have attracted wine makers from all walks of life. Wine tourists in the Okanagan should not miss visiting the wineries along the “Golden Mile” and “Black Sage Bench.” Established in 1921 by BC Premier “honest” John Oliver, the town was intended as a settlement for veterans of World War I. The Premier’s plan included an irrigation system, which transformed Canada’s only desert into a thriving region of orchards and farms. Summer visitors today enjoy

stopping at the many fruit stands along the highway to enjoy apricots, cherries and peaches at the peak of perfection. While Oliver’s spectacular scenery make it the ideal place to relax, adventure seekers will not be disappointed. Spend a day kayaking, boating, fishing or windsurfing at Tuc-El-Nuit Lake, Gallagher or Vaseaux Lakes. Hit the links or the trails with both golf courses and exceptional hiking and biking nearby; bird watching and country drives are also popular amongst visitors. OSOYOOS Canada’s only desert and warmest lake… Pronounced O-Sue-Use-- an Okanagan Indian word meaning “the place where two lakes come together”-- the town is located 10 minutes from the US border. Osoyoos Lake, Canada’s warmest freshwater lake even extends into US territory. The town site is a thin tract of land between two deliciously warm lakes. Osoyoos is Canada’s hot spot, often reaching temperatures in excess of 38°C (100°F) in the summer time. Spending time in and around the lake is the best way to keep cool and have fun. Relax and enjoy the parks and vast expanse of beaches, or check out one of the local marinas for boat rentals or lessons in windsurfing, water skiing or wakeboarding. Beyond frolicking in the water there is much fun to be had. Golf courses this far south enjoy an even longer season than Kelowna, most often remaining open February through
80 2014/2015
November but sometimes are available year round. As Canada’s only desert you will find things to explore that are found nowhere else in the country. There are several desert plants and animals that you will only find in Osoyoos. So come to Osoyoos and enjoy the unique combination of beautiful lakes in the middle of a desert, and experience record-breaking temperatures.

VERNON Uncompromised year-round lifestyle Because of the great weather and the surrounding hillsides and lakes, Vernon boasts a healthy lifestyle with an emphasis on the outdoors. Vernon is the largest city in the North Okanagan, and over 60,000 people call Greater Vernon home. Weather, lifestyle and more affordable living make Vernon an attractive location for residents and tourists alike. There are lakes flanking both sides of the city, Kalamalka Lake to the east and Okanagan Lake to the west. Vernon has grown and come into its own a little bit in the last few of years. It was always known as a town that you pass through on the way to somewhere else. Not anymore! That distinction has been surpassed, shopping, restaurants, high-end hotels, championship golf courses, skiing and the list continues on. As a result, tourism now plays a large role in the local economy. The natural surroundings are some of
Davison Orchards
Vernon’s greatest resources. While there are still acres and acres of fertile farmland for fruits and veggies there are also amazing executive golf courses, hiking, mountain biking and of course fishing. In the city you will find 26 heritage murals that map out Vernon’s past. Take a self-guided tour and discover what makes this economic hub so rich in history. A must for family outings are Davison Orchards and Planet Bee, two unique experiences that will make you enjoy the community a little bit more. In many cities your experience is enhanced by the local population, Vernon is no different and will not disappoint. A welcome “hello”, an open door and a smile is what you will find. With the growing number of hotels and attractions, you have many options of how to spend your time. Whatever you are looking to do in Vernon, it’s at your fingertips! Make Vernon your next destination. It’s a place that allows you to stay active year-round.

Kelowna, Penticton & Okanagan Valley
accommodations
Choices range from shared hostel bunks to palatial lakeside resorts, every option and every price range. Stay comfy! Kelowna, Penticton and Okanagan Valley accommodations offer you over 4,000 guestrooms in various styles, sizes and locations. The best locations are always more popular—waterfront or right in the heart of the action. Many of the properties feature amenities such as swimming pools, hot tubs & saunas, tennis courts, spas, internet and fitness facilities. More often than not, restaurants are a part of the hotel complex or accommodations are situated near restaurants and food outlets. From comfy hotel/motel rooms in the heart of the action, right up to luxury waterfront suites, and beachside houses, the Okanagan truly does provide a wide variety of places to stay. Rooms are scattered throughout the cities, with particular concentrations found near the shores of Okanagan, Skaha, and Osoyoos Lakes, in the downtown areas, and along Hwy. 97.
82 2014/2015
Hotels in the area offer a variety of combination packages, a “stay and play” idea, where options can range from wine & farm tours, to romantic getaways and spa delights, to golf and ski packages. Some tour companies have hotel locations where they are just steps away from the concierge, making adventures just a bit more accessible. Just a short drive from the city centres, up into the surrounding hills, you will find the area’s fishing lodges in pristine surroundings. For hardy travelers, campers can pitch a tent or park their RV in a wide range of properties, from isolated lakes to full service beachside parks with all the amenities. Reservations for rooms, and a spot to pitch a tent or park recreational vehicles are highly recommended during the summer months and long weekends.

From farmfresh produce, grain fed hens and beef, to handpicked fruits & veggies, chefs and chefsat-heart, bring the taste of the Okanagan to life. The art of wine pairing is also a passion throughout the Okanagan Valley. Fine dining restaurants and wine bars offer a wide variety of local, award winning wines but also offer extensive world-class wine lists as well.
