Quality Educations Lead to Stronger Business Community
J. larry nichols Devon Energy Corporation Immediate Past Chairman
Keeping Oklahoma City’s positive momentum requires many components, and one of the most critical is education. Without quality schools – from bricks and mortar to teachers and curriculum – we will fail to provide our students, Oklahoma City’s future workforce, with the tools they need to succeed.
CLAYton I. BENNETT Dorchester Capital Vice Chair, Strategic Planning peter B. delaney OGE Energy Corp. Vice Chair, Economic Development
Roy H. Williams
President & CEO
While the MAPS for Kids projects continue to benefit our students, it is time for us to place a renewed focus on what happens within the classroom. We must look beyond the bright walls of newly constructed schools and ensure that the students within these classrooms are receiving the quality education they need to succeed. From supporting measures at our capitol to getting involved with individual schools, the business community has the opportunity to impact our education system – and it is critical that we take advantage of these opportunities. These students are the future of the business community. From pre-K to higher education, we must ensure that our students are prepared to lead the charge to strengthening Oklahoma City’s economy. We cannot sit idle and allow the status quo to continue. We must take a hard look at our education system and plan the steps necessary to fix the problems in front of us. Later this month, the Chamber will host the State of the Schools event. This annual luncheon gives the business community the opportunity to gather together and discuss where our education system is headed – where we are succeeding and where we are falling short. We have the opportunity to hear from two very qualified speakers at this year’s event – Brian K. Fitzgerald, Executive Director of the Business Higher Education Forum, and Ken Levit, Executive Director of the George Kaiser Family Foundation. They will help us take a look at how our business community can be a leader in education reform and innovative Oklahoma education initiatives. I hope you will take the time to join us at the State of the Schools luncheon on August 19. If we work together to improve our education system, we will not only give our students the building blocks to future success, but we’ll also ensure a brighter future for Greater Oklahoma City.
Sincerely,
Roy H. Williams Chamber CEO & President

When MAPS for KIDS passed in 2001 and the subsequent bond issue in 2007, we took the first steps toward transforming Oklahoma City Public Schools and the 23 public school districts in Greater Oklahoma City. These infrastructure improvements – new schools, classrooms, gymnasiums, safe transportation and security/safety improvements – were necessary in order to provide quality environments for our children to learn.

grants expand economic growth opportunities Cont. from page 1
With the City’s large land area, there are many opportunities for employment. However, today’s companies are looking for shovel-ready sites – something Greater Oklahoma City lacks if 50100 contiguous acres are needed. Other regions are engaging in proactive and coordinated efforts to assemble, prepare and market land. In order to compete, Greater Oklahoma City will need to take a more aggressive approach with our private sector partners.
region. ACOG, with support from the Chamber and the City of Oklahoma City, is creating a CEDS that includes four counties – Oklahoma, Canadian, Cleveland and Logan – to allow the area as a whole to tap into federal grants for ongoing economic development infrastructure projects. The plan will help identify regional assets and liabilities that contribute to or detract from the region’s economic development activities.
The primary jobs created by companies are vital to a community’s economic stability and future growth. By offering ready-to-go sites, Greater Oklahoma City can achieve more success in locating new firms and helping local firms to expand.
“It’s an inventory of our economic development assets and potential projects within the region,” said John Johnson, ACOG Executive Director. “It’s always about job creation and bringing new businesses to the region or expanding businesses that are already here.”
Lastly, the Association of Central Oklahoma Governments (ACOG) was awarded an EDA grant to create a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) for the Central Oklahoma
EDA is an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce that partners with communities throughout the United States to foster job creation, collaboration and innovation. With the EDA grant, the City, in partnership with the Chamber, is creating the Employment Land Needs Assessment and Action Plan (ENLAAP). The goal of the project is to make it easy for companies to locate or expand in Greater Oklahoma City by providing them with a variety of sites with infrastructure already in place.

new terminal leaves impression on visitors Chip Smith, Director of FBO services, and his colleagues looked at other FBOs to get ideas for the new facility. Included on their list of improvements were shower facilities, easier access to the ramp and an expanded flight-planning room. The new facility, which had its grand opening July 26, features those, along with approximately 2,000 additional square-feet, a large pilot lounge, a business center with computers, and conference room, as well as an overhang on the exterior of the building to protect arriving passengers from inclement weather. “It’s something we’ve been dreaming about for quite some time,” said Smith. “It’s really a step in the right direction, a greatlooking facility and great for pilots and passengers.” The new FBO terminal at AAR provides a great first impression for private, corporate and general aviation customers.
The aerospace sector is an important source of jobs and income in Greater Oklahoma City. With the largest concentration of aviation and aerospace firms in the state, Greater Oklahoma City’s 265 firms employ 38,000 workers, generating an estimated $3.3 billion in goods and services and $1.9 billion in income.
AAR also provides maintenance for airlines, as well as operates a propeller overhaul facility at Will Rogers. AAR is involved in commercial, government and defense products and services, including maintenance, engineering, logistics and fabrication.
At the hub of Greater Oklahoma City’s aviation industry is Will Rogers World Airport – with approximately 10,000 employees and 67 tenants. A recent $110 million renovation of the airport included a larger terminal, nearly double the previous size, as well as expanded and updated amenities to make traveling more enjoyable for the 3.4 million passengers who fly in and out of Oklahoma City each year.
“We have some pretty influential people flying into Oklahoma City,” said Stan Mayer, General Manager of AAR Aircraft Services. “This is the face of Oklahoma City and we needed something new and modern to show that Oklahoma City is moving forward and growing.” AAR’s original facility was the Aircraftsmen FBO that was renovated over the years. However, the building was never meant to serve frequent travelers and many of the amenities were inconvenient. For example, in order for customers to get to the lobby, they had to climb a set of stairs in the hangar, cross over a maintenance shop and then enter the FBO.
The new FBO includes a number of amenities such as a large lounge, business center with computers and expanded flight-planning room.
August 2010 - Greater Oklahoma City Chamber The Point!
Similar to the passenger terminal at Will Rogers, AAR’s fixed base operator (FBO) acts as a key entry point to Oklahoma City and the state. AAR Aircraft Services has been operating an FBO at Will Rogers since 1971. The facility currently has approximately 25 operations per day and serves private, corporate and general aviation customers, as well as military and charters.
