LEADERSHIP NOTES
2010 OFFICERS DAVID tHOMPSON OPUBCO Communications Group 2010 Chairman
Looking Ahead and Working Together
J. larry nichols Devon Energy Corporation Immediate Past Chairman
It has been a year since the citizens of Oklahoma City spoke up for our future and approved MAPS 3. While we are certainly anxious to see these projects begin to take shape, it is important to look back at the City’s first MAPS program to see how careful planning and deliberate process were a big contributor to the effort’s success. When the first MAPS was approved, our city leaders put in place a citizens committee to provide insight and help guide the projects’ development. This valuable engagement and oversight is indicative of the ownership each of us has in the excellence of the program.

We are fortunate to have the same kind of citizen team helping to guide MAPS 3. Countless volunteer hours are being dedicated to help the City of Oklahoma City realize the vision these projects represent. The next months will bring interesting discussions and decisions about each of the projects and it is vital that we all trust the process and each other to make the best decisions for our city’s future. We are all a witness to the wise decisions that led to great reward – more than $5 billion in investment after MAPS. The success of each project is necessary for the success of the overall plan – especially when it comes to the convention center, modern streetcar, the renovations along the Oklahoma River and the urban park. We must take extra care to ensure that we are not rushing the decisions, planning or execution. Today, we have much to celebrate in Oklahoma City. We have a strong economy with a continually low unemployment rate, a bustling tourism industry, a dynamic NBA team and much more. On Dec. 8, 2009, the citizens of Oklahoma City voted to invest in our future with these projects. It is up to us all to ensure that we are wise with that investment. And it is up to us to support them in this progress and celebrate together as our city transforms yet again.

CHAMBER CHOICE MEETS NEEDS OF SMALL BUSINESSES Small businesses are the backbone of Greater Oklahoma City’s economy. But running a small business is not always easy. Since 2001, the Chamber has been partnering with BlueCross BlueShield of Oklahoma to offer affordable group health insurance plans to its members. This program, Chamber Choice, is available to members with two to 50 employees headquartered in Oklahoma, Canadian, Cleveland, Logan, McClain, or Pottawatomie County. Chamber Choice features: • No medical underwriting: coverage is guaranteed for Chamber members that meet contribution and participation requirements. • BlueOptions PPO: More in-network choices than any other Oklahoma PPO plan, with five deductible options. • BlueOptimize PPO: This set of flexible choices includes three deductible options • BlueLincs HMO: Coverage available with or without an annual deductible • Prescription drug coverage • Network availability in all 50 states • Office visit copayments
Since the program’s inception in 2001, each annual rate increase has been less than 11 percent. Plus, most Chamber Choice health plans are approved for the Oklahoma Employer/ Employee Partnership for Insurance Coverage (O-EPIC) program. O-EPIC pays 60 percent of health plan premiums for eligible employees who work for qualified Oklahoma businesses with 50 employees or less. Through Chamber Choice, Peggy Hawkins, Christian Counseling Associates, was able to provide affordable health insurance at a group rate to her employees.

“As a small company, Chamber Choice was our best option. In order to have quality employees, you need to be able to offer perks. Chamber Choice lets us offer our employees affordable health insurance. It has really given us a sense of security,” said Hawkins.

“Approximately 25 percent of the companies enrolled in Chamber Choice didn’t previously offer group health insurance to their employees,” said Chamber President & CEO Roy H. on technical innovation and streamlining our processes, we will improve our support to our customers.” A key success from 2010 was the creation of 1,409 new positions. The ALC hopes to continue that growth by adding more than 700 additional positions in 2011. The ALC is also focused on preparing for the future through its new Supervisor Development Program. This program takes into account the current aging workforce and is focused on growing the next generation of supervisors. In its first year, the program saw 1,300 applicants. Gen. Gillett went on to say that, “Team Tinker could not accomplish its mission or excel the way it does without the support of community partners, such as the Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce. Partnering with the Chamber has allowed us opportunities to bring in new workload which translates to creating jobs for Oklahomans.”
The Tinker Leadership Council (TLC) was formed to show support for the men and women who work at Tinker Air Force Base. TLC members work to promote the rentention and growth of Tinker, and is an outgrowth of the long history that the Chamber and the region have in supporting and appreciating the services the base provides to our Nation’s security. TLC meets quarterly, providing a forum for civilian and military leaders to strengthen economic, political and community relationships. Convention & Visitors Bureau Spotlight: Oklahoma City CVB Celebrates National Convention Services Day Partnering with hotels for networking, continuing education
On September 16, the Oklahoma City Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) celebrated National Convention Services Day by hosting a city-wide luncheon to recognize the importance of the convention services industry as the front line of promoting Oklahoma City as a visitor and convention destination. With 19 convention services managers from 10 different hotel properties in attendance, Jennifer Fichtman and Ashley Young, convention services managers for the CVB, programmed the first luncheon of this kind with hopes to make it a quarterly event.
The role of the CVB’s convention services managers is to provide support and information to convention groups of all sizes who select Oklahoma City as their destination. Once the convention, conference or meeting is booked, the CVB convention services managers step in to organize and communicate with the convention services managers at the participating hotel properties. At the September luncheon, attendees participated in a webinar hosted by the Association for Convention Operations Management. This webinar featured a panel of meeting planners from across the country discussing what their expectations are of convention services managers. “By learning what the expectations are for convention services managers like us, we can be sure to meet and exceed those expectations in Oklahoma City,” said Young. “We want to make the meeting planning process as fluid as possible.” Bringing convention services managers together from various properties in the city was a major draw to attendees. One of the properties in attendance was the Skirvin Hilton in downtown Oklahoma City.

The next luncheon for the Oklahoma City convention sales industry will be on December 2 at Nonna’s Euro-American Ristorante and Bar. During the 11:30 a.m. lunch meeting, Fichtman and Young will inform the hotel properties’ convention services managers what the CVB can do for convention groups coming to Oklahoma City.
