The only grandson of John and Eleanor Kirkpatrick, OKC FRIDAY’s OKCityan of the Year Chris Keesee is following in their footsteps of success in business, philanthropy and the advancement of the arts. Keesee, 60, is also the only son of Joan Kirkpatrick and Konrad Keesee. The Kirkpatricks had a significant influence on their grandson as they involved him in their various business and civic activities, including monthly financial planning meetings. Absorbing his grandmother’s passion for the arts, his first position was as a fundraiser for the Oklahoma Arts Center. While serving on the board of the Kirkpatrick Foundation, he launched a project to revitalize and reopen a facility that his grandfather had built to house the Oklahoma Arts and Sciences Foundation. This developed into the City Arts Center. Keesee now serves as chairman of Kirkpatrick Bank and manager of the Family Office, which invests in banking, philanthropic, real estate and energy-oriented opportunities. He is chairman of the Kirkpatrick Foundations: The Kirkpatrick Family Fund, the Kirkpatrick Foundation and the Christian Keesee Charitable Trust. Like his grandparents, his philantropic initiatives focus on the arts, art education, culture, community concerns, animal well-being, environmental conservation and historical preservation. The foundations support organizations with projects and programs dedicated to these causes. John Kirkpatrick started the Oklahoma City Community Foundation in 1969 when most people in OKC had never heard of a community foundation, Nancy Anthony, its executive director said.“

An arts organization our family has nurtured for over 30 years, Oklahoma Contemporary is now the most significant new cultural addition to Oklahoma City’s landscape in over a generation. Cat of the Week
Saber is a silly, smart cat that his humans, the King family (Justin, Jami, Emory, and Griffin), just adore. His favorite thing to do is play with the laser pointer! He is a 1year-old and is a Domestic Longhair. Saber is the King family’s favorite child by far. He is spoiled and loves to be outside, so if you ever see him out on the town, give the Kings a call. In September 2016, Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center broke ground on its much-anticipated new building at 11th and Broadway in Oklahoma City. Christian Keesee, members of Oklahoma Contemporary’s Board of Trustees and community supporters gathered to celebrate the official groundbreaking in the downtown’s Innovation District.
KEESEE From Page 1 said that while Keesee is a man of his time, he has tremendous regard for the generations that came before.
“Every day, he honors our founders by hewing to their original visions,” she said. “To be forward-thinking, but true to the past is a delicate balance and he does it with flair and integrity.” While Keesee said the
pandemic has been “hard on our spirit, our enthusiasm and hard on our unity,” what it has brought about an economic shift which has created opportunity. The Kirkpatrick Bank completed 862 Payroll Protection Program loans for a total of $84.6 million. “Everyone pitched in, some working 12-hour shifts,” Keesee said. “For a small private bank, I think we did a great job and I'm very proud.” The bank’s assets exceeded $1 billion for the first time in 2021. A third branch opened in
Westcliff, Colo. The Kirkpatrick family has been in the energy business since 1925. Keesee said he rethought the asset balance in the Family Office. This action resulted in a smaller, but more profitable Kirkpatrick Oil and Gas Company. “The energy business is tricky territory and it is evolving,” Keesee said. “We need to do so, too.” On the philanthropic front, he said the most important accomplishment was the successful completion of Oklahoma See KEESEE, Page 11

THE VILLAGE From Page 1 recent meeting, the city council voted unanimously for reapportionment of all five Ward boundaries to reflect demographic changes. Nearly 700 city residents will now find themselves living in a different Ward. “Council elections in The Village are at-large so boundaries only matter for candidacy,” said Bruce Stone, city manager. “Adjusting ward boundaries is basically a geographic and numbers game. “It’s a puzzle to solve which census blocks are moved from one Ward to another as each has an assigned population count.” Stone said Wards 1 and 4 required the most change. “The challenge was to take enough people from Ward 4 and somehow get a good part of those to Ward 1,” he said. “The wards aren’t contiguous, so it was necessary to change other wards (primarily Ward 3) in order to move people to Ward 1.” The Village has experienced a renaissance of new home construction in recent years. Ward 3 grew nearly 150 new homes with the addition of Crossing at The Village Phase I and II. Ward 4 grew the most with the addition of The Villas and Hawthorn neighborhoods. Populations for each Ward reflect approximately 20 percent of the city population. Utilizing 2020 Census figures, Ward 1 now has 1872 residents or 19.63 percent of the population after reapportionment; Ward 2, 1903 residents or 19.95 percent; Ward 3, 1930 resi-
dents or 20.23 percent; Ward 4, 1936 residents or 20.30 percent ; and Ward 5, 1897 residents or 19.89 percent. The Village was first included in the 1960 census when it recorded a population of 12,118. The city hit its peak in 1970 with 13,695 residents, while it recorded its lowest population during the 2010 Census with 8,929 residents. “We lost about 1,000 residents when the old Whispering Hills Apartments were vacated in the late 2000s,” said Stone. “This showed up in the 2010 Census resulting in redrawing of Ward 4 to make up for the loss.” The population loss was partially reversed with the construction of The Villas and Hawthorn neighborhoods. In other business: • Ward 4 Councilwoman Cathy Cummings announced her resignation from the council effective immediately. She is currently a candidate for the District 3 seat on the Oklahoma County Commission and has been actively running for the seat for eight months. Last month, the City of The Vil-
lage was redistricted out of District 3 and into District 1 by a unanimous vote of all three Oklahoma County Commissioners. The move made it illegal for her to run in District 3 unless she changed her residence. She has since moved her residence to District 1. There are no plans to appoint someone to fulfill the remainder of Cummings’ term. The regular election for the Ward 4 seat is April 5, 2022. Filing period is Feb. 1-3. • The council voted unanimously to move City Council meetings from 7:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. beginning this month. The Village Planning and Zoning Commission meetings will be scheduled at 5 p.m. All meetings are held on the first and third Monday of each month. • The monthly sales tax check was for $550,709.88, which is an increase of $126,405 or 29.790 percent as compared to the same period last year. Use Tax was $119,695, a decrease of $20,884 or 14.86 percent as compared to the same period last year.

The Texas Tech commit also collected four interceptions on defense and enjoyed a stellar season in the return game. Offensive lineman Gavin Wilson started all four years and dominated most every game. Defensive lineman Mason Georgia collected 84 tackles and 16 sacks for the second-most in school history and was a stout presence up front on both defense and offense. Kicker Luke Butler
rounded out the quartet after connecting on 7-of-8 field goals with a long of 50 yards and converting 58-of-62 extra-point attempts. BASEBALL Duncan Key, Deer Creek, NEO; Brett McComas, Deer Creek, Cowley County (Kan.); Brett Pense, Deer Creek, Central Oklahoma. GIRLS BASKETBALL Modesti McConnell, Casady, Georgetown.
GIRLS TRACK Rachel Neaves, Deer Creek, Oklahoma State. FOOTBALL Jaleel Johnson, PC North, Oklahoma State; Jacob Sexton, Deer Creek, Oklahoma. BOYS GOLF Jack Hope, Deer Creek, Central Missouri. PANTHERS HIRE LANE AS FOOTBALL COACH A pair of Fridayland schools made coaching changes following the end of the 2021 football season. Most recently, PC North promoted offensive coordinator Derek Lane to head coach after former coach Ryan Laverty resigned after six seasons. Lane spent the last four seasons as an assistant and offensive coordinator for the
Panthers. He didn’t coach during the 2021 season. Lane is in his 11th year of teaching in the Putnam City district and is a Putnam West graduate. Under Lane’s guidance as an OC, he led the Panthers to school records with points scored (68) on top of other numerous individual records. In 2021, Laverty led PC North to a 5-6 record and fell to Bixby in the opening round of the Class 6A-II playoffs. During his tenure, the Panthers went 31-32 and made the playoffs three times in the past four seasons.
BEARS LOOKING FOR 3RD COACH IN 4 YEARS John Marshall also is looking for its third coach over the last four years, with Jeff Horrocks not returning for a third season with the Bears. Horrocks guided the Bears to a 7-13 record the past two seasons, including a 3-7 mark this fall. Since winning a state title in 2017, John Marshall’s win total has dropped in each of the past four seasons. This year was the first time the Bears missed the playoffs since 2013. – Compiled by Jason Jewell

n the summer of 1982, my world changed forever. My older brother Mark McDaniel graduated from Alva High School and my parents moved my middle brother Randy McDaniel and I three hours away to Edmond. My dad, Tom McDaniel, had given up his lucrative, small-town law practice to accept a new job as Oklahoma Administrative Director of the Courts. The move was a big one for all of us. Mark was off to the University of Oklahoma. Randy was starting high school. And I was entering seventh grade with a school full of people who knew nothing about me. After a lifetime of being Mark and Randy’s little brother, I was just me. My mom, Brenda McDaniel, reacted to the move like she did to all challenges. She dove in head first. The cost of living in Edmond versus Alva was significant. Mom took a full-time job at Sequoyah Middle School teaching seventh and eighth grade math and English to students with learning disabilities. And, she
earned her real estate license and started selling houses for Abide Realtors in Edmond. Edmond real estate in the early eighties was big business. Not everyone was excited to see a cute, smalltown woman enter the market with a splash. Mom quickly found that her real estate co-workers were also competitors, and not always on her side. But she never said anything to us about it. She just kept on selling houses and signing up new clients. One day, mom came home and handed me a sign she had gotten at work. The sign said, “Attitude is Everything.” Mom said we can never control the actions of our friends, classmates, or co-workers. We cannot control what the world around us says or does. All we can control is our attitude towards every situation. I put the sign up in my bed-

room. It still hangs there today. This week, my awesome mother turns 82 years old. Her journey from a farm in Slapout to First Lady of Oklahoma City University has been filled with a million different challenges. Her ability to maintain a positive attitude, and her willingness to share that perspective with our entire family, has allowed all of us to enjoy a life filled with an abundance of love and joy. The last couple of years have been hard on everyone. Surviving and navigating a global pandemic, changes in work and school, and differing opinions on how we should all behave have made it difficult to stay positive. But it is possible. Every day, we are given a fresh chance to change the way we see the world. Every day, we are provided new opportunities to be kind, to listen, to make someone’s day better. As you move into the new year, dive right in like Brenda McDaniel. And, when you face obstacles, try to remember, Attitude is Everything.

OILFIELD & HEAVY HAULING TRUCKS*TRAILERS THURS. JAN. 13TH AT 10:00 AM Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Out of Time by J. Mac Troy The early December Oklahoma and Publishers Weekly bestsellers list found Out of Time by J. Mac Troy leading the pack. For over thirty years Mr. Troy has been successful in producing thousands of documentaries and live political and sporting events. He picked up Addy Awards in three states and a coveted Gold Award from the Houston World Fest Film Festival. Obviously, it was only a matter of time before he wrote a book that called on all these facets of writing. Voila, Out of Time! This adventure story has it all. 21st Century realism, 1800s wild west cattle drives, train

robberies, Indian lore of the Cherokee, Apache tribes as lived through Chang, a Chinese Apache character whose antics are known in both centuries. The touch of mystery, romance and far-reaching fantasy have just enough of the present to mix a magnetic story with colorful events from the past to cause the reader to pause from time to time to simply enjoy the flow. If there were such an award as an Oscar for anachronisms, Troy would certainly have earned it here. They pop in and out as frequently as the six shooters, Land Runs, Boone Pickens characters. Just picture a handsome, young doctor named Mark Sullivan, a cowboy and Jerry Jones. Such is also the tangle on the Kansas border with the Indian Territory and unassigned lands, not to mention OU logo sweatshirts, descriptions of scalping, killings and kidnap-
pings. FUN FOR ALL! The major characters are fully human though it could be a stretch to believe the young hero named T-Bone Stone and his talking dog “Little Red” actually could carry on such conversations. The beautiful young Spirit of Wind Dancing will remain in the reader’s dreams longer than the Fourth of July Parade. T-Bone’s trail boss Bill Doolin and Colonel Randall Galloway, play major roles. There are “a world of others in this land” where Bone’s knowledge of Dallas and Oklahoma City of the past joins his history into tomorrow. Out of Time brings another telling of race relations and property rights squabbles during our American past. Without a doubt, The Oklahoma and Publishers’ Weekly got it right: Best Seller! Thanks to Full Circle Bookstore for sharing books with FRIDAY Readers.

OPINION O UR S TAND “And you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:32 (quoting Jesus). The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” – Edmund Burke paraphrase, 1767. If you want it in the paper, it’s advertising. If you don’t want it in the paper, it’s news.” – Ancient Chinese Proverb. “Without, or with, offense to friends or foes, We sketch your world exactly as it goes.” – Byron, 1818. “Every violation of truth is a stab at the health of human society.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson, 1878. “We must always stand – alone if necessary – as the conscience of this community.” – J. Leland Gourley, 1959.

Happy New Year from OK’s football teams appy New Year to all our OKC FRIDAY subscribers. We hope we enhanced your appreciation of everything happening with our residents, from charity galas to our healthcare leaders fighting COVID-19 last year. This week, I am over the moon with Oklahoma State’s victory over Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. It has not been unusual for the Cowboys to kick it in gear in the second half this year. They lost the Big 12 title game to Baylor when they were on the two-inch line and time ran out. But to stomp on a big-time name like Notre Dame when OSU was so far behind at the half was unbelievable. OU and Tulsa also won their Bowl games. OU defeated Oregon in the Alamo Bowl, 47 - 32. Tulsa trounced Old Dominion 30 - 17 in the Myrtle Beach Bowl. Big smiles grace the faces of the grads of all three Oklahoma universities this year.

In MY Opinion by VICKI CLARK GOURLEY vicki@okcfriday.com
In 2021, more than 12,500 Oklahomans died from COVID. Over 90 percent of that number were NOT VACCINATED. It does not seem to phase the anti-vaxers that 11,250 Oklahomans are dead because they would not get the shots. Some vaccinated people did die, 1,250, mostly older with co-morbidities. Tuesday, the Oklahoma Health Department reported 4,110 new cases and 27,820 active cases. BUT NO ONE HAS DIED FROM JUST GETTING VACCINATED.
••• There are many beneficial areas where Oklahoma City has excelled under the leadership of Mayor David Holt, the record-breaking passage of MAPS 4, the lowest unemployment rate in modern Oklahoma City history, a booming economy, soaring population growth, increased funding for core services like police, fire, and streets. He is running for re-election in February with the slogan, “Let’s keep a good thing going.”
••• Debby Hampton, CEO, and President of the United Way expressed some moving thoughts in a note to the United Way campaign workers. “Life is a gift. Four powerful words that make
us pause and think of how and why we are here in the world, and what we should do with the life that has been gifted to us. Sadly, for many in our community, life can quickly feel like less of a gift and more of a burden. That’s why United Way of Central Oklahoma is here, to create a stronger, healthier and more compassionate community. By supporting a network of 55 locally-focused Partner Agencies and 102 health and human service programs, contributions are used to surround our community’s most critical needs, address multiple issues and offer help and hope where it’s needed the most.”
••• In a battle of Governors, Governor Kevin Stitt has lost every time to the Governors and Principal Chiefs of Oklahoma’s 39 Native American tribes. It all began right after Stitt was elected when he proposed a steep hike in the fees paid to the state by the tribal casinos. Governor Stitt lost that battle but continued to spend time and state resources challenging the tribes in court over different issues. It has deteriorated to fighting about hunting and fishing licenses. The Cherokee Nation is the state’s largest tribe and Tulsa benefits significantly from their generosity. In Oklahoma City, Chickasaw Nation’s Governor Bill Anoatubby generously funds everything from the United Way to the National Cowboy Hall of Fame. The Chickasaw Nation supports Oklahoma City nonprofits, both large and small. The tribes are a blessing to the entire state.

KEESEE From Page 2
This photograph was taken in 1983 when Christian Keesee was an escort at the Beaux Arts Ball benefitting the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. Eleanor Kirkpatrick was the organizer and first chairman of the event in 1946 and her husband John E. Kirkpatrick was King of the Ball in 1956. ABT, known as America’s National Ballet Company©, completed a fiveweek residency at the Green Box Arts Festival last summer where a world-premiere of Farley’s Collage & Creed was performed for festival enthusiasts.
Contemporary’s $30 million capital campaign and the opening of the facility. Thousands of people now come to Oklahoma Contemporary to receive art instruction and see exhibitions they can’t find anywhere else in Oklahoma. Anthony said the development of Oklahoma Contemporary as a major cultural institution has been a significant addition to Oklahoma City that will impact the community for many years. “(Keesee’s) contributions to the community reflect a deep commitment to making Oklahoma City a very interesting place,” she said. Eddie Walker is the executive director of Oklahoma Contemporary. “Christian Keesee is an inspired and informed leader and philanthropist whose contributions to our city and state are truly immeasurable,” Walker said “His and his family’s legacies will continue to impact the lives of Oklahomans for generations. We are all quite fortunate.” The trustees of the three family foundations are finalizing plans to double their normal grant program in the next four years to distribute over $100 million. “We see people doing amazing work and want to encourage them in important ways with funding that will assure new projects come to
fruition,” Keesee said. The Kirkpatrick foundations would like to secure the future of other organizations by building endowments at the Oklahoma City Community Foundation, he said. The philanthropy is focused in three cities: Oklahoma City, Colorado Springs and New York. And, Keesee said they are ramping up activity in their new new 501 c4 organization, the Kirkpatrick Policy Group. Its mission is to identify and advocate positions on issues that have been significant for the Kirkpatrick family — arts, arts education, animal well-being and also reproductive health. “He has worked diligently on teen-age pregnancy prevention and humane treatment of all animals,” Anthony said. McCune called Keesee a “serious thinker and doer who has accomplished so much expansion, businesswise and philanthropically.
“He has a deep grasp of global issues, events and culture and how they all come together to affect Oklahoma City,” she said. “But that could be said of many people. “What sets Chris apart is his extraordinary courage, his high standards, his compassionate heart and his sense of humor. He’s whip-smart, funny, dedicated and one of the hardest-working people I know—with massive amounts of energy.” Keesee said he thrives on being outside, exercising and being active. He plans to run an April 2022 Sprint Triathlon in Florida. He has a son Blake, 24. Keesee is married to Larry Keigwin, a New York choreographer. They have two Great Dane puppies, Dash and Diego. Keesee and Keigwin are also the founders of the Green Box Arts Festival in Green Mountain Falls, Colo.
