Green Team
Living life with Ms. Senior Oklahoma Roxanne Parks
Waging the war on grime in Downtown OKC By Rose Lane Editor Oklahoma City’s Downtown Business Improvement District is being kept a safe, clean and a welcoming place to work, live and visit thanks to the services of the Green Team. Begun by Downtown Oklahoma City, Inc., the Green Team started hitting the streets on March 1 to provide supplemental cleaning and safety services. Green Team members remove trash and litter, vacuum streets, pressure wash sidewalks and remove human and animal waste, as well as stickers and graffiti. The Green Team provides special event information, business check-ins, hospitality escorts and a homeless outreach. According to the Downtown OKC, Inc. website, the benefits of the Green Team Program are comprehensive data reporting, increased visibility with an integrated brand, efficiencies in communication and coordination of services and enhanced hospitality across all services. The program is administrated by Block by Block, the nation’s See GREEN, Page 5

By Rachel Dallalio Student Intern After five decades of leadership, Christian life coach, speaker and author Roxanne Parks says it has been an unexpected path. With a degree from the University of Oklahoma in petroleum engineering, leadership was never the end goal. Parks said she found a new passion for leadership from experiences in homeschooling, engineering and women’s ministry. “My personality is probably more of a cheerleader for people rather than for school,” Parks said. “I ended up finding a need for encouragement and to be an encouragement.” Parks, along with life coaching, has written several books and multiple YouVersion Bible app plans which all have almost one million downloads. Parks said getting her writings out into the world opened so many opportunities for her. One of these opportunities led Parks to compete for Ms. Oklahoma Senior. Just like she had to homeschooling leadership, Parks said no to pageants initially, but God had other plans. Parks was unsure about her talent portion for the pageant, but knew she could speak about leadership. She gave a personal monologue which helped earn her the title of Ms. Oklahoma Senior 2022. “My heart is just to build up women mostly but I really love it,” Parks said. “I want to be actively serving and speaking to them anyway that I can.”
of the Week Janet (Miss Jackson if you're nasty), the semi feral/semi famous (@janet_the _pool_cat on instagram) pool cat. She is at home in the wild, but amuses her humans by showing up for daily meals, watching pool activity and peeping in the windows — keeping the birds that are feeding in the yard honest in the process. Her caretaker, Tammy Anderson, vows to get friendly enough during feedings to pet Janet one day. But, Miss Jackson remains aloof. However, she is still a very loved part of the family.

Response is tremendous to waived fees By Rose Lane Editor After the OKC Animal Welfare waived adoption fees for dogs and cats last week to relieve overcapacity, 352 animals were saved. The shelter was caring for more than 450 dogs, putting the building at 155 percent capacity. Animal Welfare was also housing more than 220 cats, which is 119 percent capacity, Animal Welfare Superintendent Jon Gary said. The response to the waived fees was tremendous. Gary said last Friday and Saturday, 3,484 people visited the shelter. One hundred eighty-nine animals were adopted and 105 were sent to foster. He said that 80 of those were to adopt.
An additional 16 animals were returned to owners and there were 42 transfers. There is still time to take advantage of the waived fees. “We will continue these waived fees as long as lives are at risk,” Gary said. “These animals deserve a permanent, loving home. And with adoption fees waived, this is an easy way to add a pet to your family.” All adoptable dogs and cats at OKC Animal Welfare are up-to-date on vaccinations, microchipped, treated for worms and spayed or neutered. OKC Animal Welfare, 2811 SE 29 Street, is open for adoptions from noon to 5:30 p.m. every day but holidays. For more information, visit okc.gov/animalwelfare or call (405) 297-3100.

Start new chapters and new conversations with unique Book Club This July, meet people who share a love of reading with Let’s Talk About It, a dynamic book club hosted by The Salvation Army of Central Oklahoma and organized by the Oklahoma Humanities (OH) that has connected curious readers across the state since 1985. Made possible by an OH grant and generous funding and support by the Kirkpatrick Family Fund and Oklahoma City University, this program is free and open to all. “The Oklahoma Experience: The Thirties” will explore the decade of the 1930s, which
remains the most misunderstood in Oklahoma history. The series will approach the historical problems of this trying period. The books to be discussed are Will Rogers: His Wife’s Story by Betty Rogers; The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck; Roughneck by Jim Thompson; and The Silver DeSoto by Patty Lou Floyd. Join us for one session or the entire series as experts open each book discussion with an analysis of the text, its recurring themes, revelations about the author’s life, and historical context. Each discussion will be held at the
Sequoyah Senior Center, 2400 NW 36th St, Oklahoma City, from 9-11 am. The first discussion will be held on July 21, then subsequently on August 25, September 29 and October 27. Anyone interested in participating should contact Diane Maguire at 405-246-1120 or via email Diane.Maguire@uss.salvationarmy.org. Learn more at TSAOK.org or visit the Facebook page @salarmycentralok. Oklahoma Humanities (OH) is an independent, nonprofit organization whose mission is to strengthen communities by helping
Oklahomans learn about the human experience, understand new perspectives and participate knowledgeably in civic life. As the state partner for the National Endowment for the Humanities, OH is a grant-making organization that provides a free educational magazine, Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibits, reading and discussion groups, and other cultural opportunities. OPINION O UR S TAND “And you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:32 (quoting Jesus). The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” – Edmund Burke paraphrase, 1767. If you want it in the paper, it’s advertising. If you don’t want it in the paper, it’s news.” – Ancient Chinese Proverb. “Without, or with, offense to friends or foes, We sketch your world exactly as it goes.” – Byron, 1818. “Every violation of truth is a stab at the health of human society.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson, 1878. “We must always stand – alone if necessary – as the conscience of this community.” – J. Leland Gourley, 1959.

Tulsa police save lives in mass shooting M
ass shootings ocurred 11 times over the weekend, according to the national news. What can be done? A one-week waiting period for AR-15s and other semi-automatic weapons? The one reason for so much carnage in Uvalde, Texas is that local law enforcement refused to act giving the gunman over 70 minutes to kill 19 students and two teachers. Tulsa police undoubtedly saved at least that many people by arriving and acting on the scene immediately at the St. Francis Hospital medial building. They confronted the shooter and he took his own life. Both shooters bought the guns just hours before the attacks. Ideally, 21-year-old gun buyers would have a two-week waiting period and background check before being sold any semi-automatic weapon. If parents want their kids to use these weapons, they can do the buying. These are military weapons.
In MY Opinion by VICKI CLARK GOURLEY vicki@okcfriday.com
I know people who own them and use them for target practice. The way the feds got the Thompson machine guns of Al Capone off the market was requiring an expensive federal tax stamp and requiring it to be signed by a local sheriff. Yet Gov. Kevin Stitt refuses to put any restrictions on buying a gun.
This does not make us more safe, it just enables mass shooters. Mental illness is often brought up. How can we require mental illness tests for buying guns, when our officials refuse to do anything about restricting gun sales? In 2019 Oklahoma repealed its requirement that people obtain a license and background check to carry firearms in public. Gov. Stitt and the legislature need to reinstate this law if we are going to be safe from mass shootings. It won’t cost him the election. Too many Republicans in the state for him to lose the election even if he supports gun law, which will keep us safer.
Gentner Drummond drops by office The candidate for Attorney General Gentner Drummond dropped by the office to discuss his goals as Attorney General, and told me a funny story. Admitting his wife was much more liberal than he, said she donated to the Biden Campaign. The problem was she used their joint credit card for the donation. That showed up on donation records as his name.
Then it started the accusations that HE was donating to Democrats. Drummond is a Republican. The former fighter pilot led the first U.S. Combat mission in the Gulf War, is unanimously endorsed by the Oklahoma Fraternal Order of Police, owns a ranch, banks and has 65 Drummond cousins. He also married a Democrat.

Hearts for Hearing receives $225,000 grant
M
asonic Charity Foundation of Oklahoma awarded Hearts for Hearing a generous grant of $225,000 to support its Newborn Hearing Screen (NBHS) services across the state. The newborn hearing screening is done shortly after birth to help diagnose hearing loss in newborns. “Early detection of hearing loss is critical for optimal brain development in children born deaf,” said Joanna Smith, founder and chief executive officer of Hearts for Hearing. “Babies who are deaf are learning
to listen and talk like typical children when they are diagnosed early, fit with technology and enrolled in listening and spoken language therapy. “When we do what it takes from the very beginning, children who are deaf are achieving great things. We are grateful to the Masonic Charity Foundation for changing the lives of babies
impacted by hearing loss.” John Logan, executive director of the Masonic Charity Foundation of Oklahoma added, “Public wellness and education have long been focal points of our mission. Hearing loss can present great challenges for children and their ability to attain educational goals, have meaning-
ful relationships and enjoy the same opportunities as their hearing peers. Early detection and therapy can provide life changing help for children with hearing loss, as they learn to listen and talk.” Hearts for Hearing offers a unique model where pediatric audiologists and speech language pathologists work together with families. The organization provides the first set of hearing aids to Oklahoma children at no cost to families. Hearts for Hearing also provides hearing care for adults.
