Wheels are turning on the implementation of MAPS 4 By Rose Lane Editor With the Oklahoma City Council’s approval of the MAPS 4 Implementation Plan, the wheels are turning on the implementation of the

program. The Implementation Plan is the guiding document for the program scope, project scheduling and budgets. MAPS 4 program consultant ADG developed the plan based on the 2019 MAPS 4

resolution, Finance Department sales tax projections, information from city staff and project advocates/operators, publicly available plans and data, as well as previous MAPS experience.

The program schedule is aggressive with almost all 16 projects moving forward within 15 months of plan adoption, MAPS Program Manager David E. Todd said. “Determining where in the schedule to place each proj-

ect largely depends on operational capacity and availability of funds,” he said.. “Because the sales taxes are collected over an eight-year period, the full $978 million See MAPS, Page 5

The emerging workforce

Gen Zs want to be a part of something bigger Editor’s note: This is the first in a two-part series on the emerging workforce. By Rose Lane Editor

Honoring Gaylord women

It’s not necessarily about the money for today’s emerging work force. Rather, new and future workers want to feel like they are a part of a community. Those were the opinions of a panel of educational experts assembled by the Northwest OKC Chamber for its The Emerging Workforce: Education and Expectations of the Present and Future Workers luncheon. The panel included: • Dr. Lisa Fisher, senior director of community engagement, OSU/OKC. • Dr. Jeremy Thomas, interim president, Oklahoma City Community College. • Jeremy Cowley, dean of instruction, Metro Technology Center. • Holly Sapp, executive clinical director, Southern Nazarene University Renew Counseling Center. • Cody Mosley, director, workforce and economic development, Francis Tuttle Technology Center. • Patty Balenseifen, chief officer of human capital, Putnam City Public Schools. People who are getting ready to enter the workforce or who have recently arrived, have a changing attitude about work, Cowley said. “They will work for less money if they believe in your mission,” he said. “They aren’t any less hardworking, but they are very savvy.”

Diversion Hub to host first gala The Diversion Hub’s inaugural fundraising event, Wayfinders, takes place on Oct. 29 at Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center, 11 NW 11. The event, featuring Mayor David Holt and Rachel Canuso Holt as masters of ceremonies, includes dinner, cocktails and stories of inspirational journeys to reclaim hope. In addition to highlighting the work and stories of those navigating the criminal justice system, the Diversion Hub is presenting the 2021 Wayfinder Award to Christian Keesee. The Wayfinder Award recog-

nizes bold leadership and a commitment to furthering the success of collaborative, sustainable criminal justice reforms. Keesee, who has been a strong supporter of the Diversion Hub since its inception, is trustee of the Kirkpatrick Family Fund and Kirkpatrick Foundation, legacies of his family. For more information, including potential sponsorship opportunities or to make a donation in honor of Christian Keesee, contact Alexandra Urice, aurice@okdiversionhub.org, or visit okdiversionhub.org/ wayfinders.

Crossings cheer teams wins sixth state championship The Crossings Christian Knights cheer team took home the 4A state championship title for the third time last weekend. This marks the sixth state championship for the team since joining the OSSAA in 2013. Senior Gracie Sanders is a four-year member of the team, and has earned a total of six state championships. She said she believes that being a part of the CCS cheer team has taught her the true

definition of success. "My biggest take away from being a part of the team is understanding that being successful is better when done with others,” Grace said. “It means so much more when you accomplish a goal with the teammates who you have put all your trust in." Senior team member Lauren Bradley agreed. “Stepping on the mat, knowing we will all be there for each other no matter the

outcome, is the best part of competing,” Lauren said. “It is this level of trust and friendship that have been the foundation of our success each year.” The team of 28 girls is led by head coach Raelynn Burdett and assistant coaches Kaitlan Peregrin and Mickayla Corvi. The coaches and team members set long and short term goals for their season, each based on their team verse Colossians 3:17, "And whatever you do,

whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the father through him.” Coach Burdett said that she was proud each member “consistently worked for the person next to them on the mat, but most importantly they used their talent to glorify the Lord; and you could see that in their performance this past weekend.” The roster includes: Carley Atchley, Ellie Grace Bond, Lauren Bradley,

Kenzie Coit, Gracie Sanders Ellason, Sophia Buchanan, Julia Garrison, Riley Garrison, Olivia King, Caroline Kreger, Bronwyn Link, Kate McKeown , Kate Pirnat and Ruthie Ryan. Also, Julia Wall, Reagan Akridge, Hattie Bond, Charlotte Frans, Isabella Napoliello, Kinsley Pulido, Addie Brown, Calynn Campbell, Murphy Link, Piper McWilliams, Ruby Rowe, Kayman VonTungeln and Ava Yand.

Band together As part of Cox Communications’ Connection Project, high school bands from Putnam City West and Putnam City North performed together during halftime of the rivals’ football game. Cox is helping to provide a human connection with “Real people. Real stories.” that demonstate the power of connectedness to get through difficult times. The Gen Zs want to know why they are being asked to do something, he said. Thomas said they don’t just want you to come tell them how to do a job, the Gen Ys want constant involvement and the knowledge that they are heading in the right direction. “They want to see the pathway to the top,” Cowley said. The panelists’ education institutions are working hard to try to prepare students for the “real world.” In the Putnam City Public Schools, Balenseifen said preparation begins in ninth grade. Students are surveyed as to their career goals and their high school curriculum is tailored to those. Mock interviews and keyboarding to Google suite are all part of high school students’ schedules, she said. Mosley said educational administrators must determine what skill sets are always in demand. Francis Tuttle conducted a labor study to discover what OKC is looking for. The technical school found that there is a need for expertise in aerospace, electric vehicles and engineering.

The importance of developing “soft skills” was also a topic of discussion in preparing students for the workforce. Sapp said that older workers are actually ahead of new ones in terms of communication skills. “A lot of the communication and interaction we do today is electronic,” she said. “They are behind where we are.” It is important, therefore, for schools to practice face-to-face interactions with these young people, Sapp said. Other soft skills include dependability,

($38 million); fairgrounds coliseum ($63 million); Diversion Hub ($17 million); Innovation District ($71 million); Freedom Center and Clara Luper Civil Rights Center ($25 million); beautification ($30 million); and multipurpose stadium ($37 million). reliability, adaptability, customer focus and team work, Cowley said. “We are giving students the chance to grow their leadership skills by leading their peers,” he said. Education is for workforce development, Thomas said. “If education is for education’s sake, we are wasting our time. “There needs to be a destination. You don’t go out on the front porch to go for a walk without knowing where you are going.” Next week: Now you have hired new workers, how are you going to keep them?

hanks to the increasing number of film productions coming to Oklahoma, the question I am asked most frequently is how does someone break into the movie business. Fortunately, the Oklahoma Film + Music Office has been working on workforce development for the past several years. There are now more ways than ever to jump start your film career. For young people, the best options are still at the technology centers, colleges, and local universities. Semester-long courses and degree programs provide a depth of knowledge and require a dedication that is unmatched by weekend seminars and truncated training opportunities. Metro Technology Center, Oklahoma City Community College, Oklahoma City University, and University of Oklahoma all have great film and digital media programs that offer a well-rounded education, hands-on experience, and connections to internships and production jobs. The Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute at Quartz Mountain is the rare exception that offers a spectacular two-week program for high school students. It is a rigorous application process, but completely worth it for the twenty or so students selected. train and manage the students and an accomplished visiting director to provide the vision for the session. For adults working in other careers that are interested in transitioning into film production jobs, there are two great training programs: FEIO and OFTA. Both are run by working professionals, provide a direct line to future jobs, and give a quick but deep dive into production that accurately portrays the process and stress of actual productions. The Film Education Institute of Oklahoma (FEIO), led by Executive Director Trevor Rogers, is a non-profit seeking to educate future filmmakers by providing networking opportunities and educational workshops. FEIO was launched by Bishop McGuinness and OCU graduate Nathan Gardocki as a side project at his company, NGP Productions, Oklahoma’s largest film equipment rental house. His goal was to get more people qualified to work on film productions coming to town. Gardocki and Rogers gathered the leading crew members in the Oklahoma film industry and had them Nov. 56 Nov. 7 Nov. 24 Dec. 34 Dec. 5 Dec. 1119 Dec. 12 Dec. 22 Dec. 28 Jan. 2

teach college grads and working professionals how to actually work on movie sets. The workshops were a huge success, leading to recurring jobs for most of the participants and the establishment of FEIO. The Oklahoma Film and Television Academy (OFTA) is a similar workforce readiness center that offers training to people who have worked in other careers. From electricians to chefs to carpenters to hair dressers, OFTA helps bridge the gap between career experience and the jobs that can best utilize those skills on a movie set. Founded by Richard Janes, Amy Janes, and Melodie Garneau, OFTA is located at Green Pastures Studio and Soundstage in Spencer. For anyone not ready to commit to a class, the Oklahoma Film + Music Office YouTube channel offers a great selection of free videos on several aspects of the filmmaking process, including screenwriting, stop motion animation, virtual auditions, scouting locations, costuming, make-up and hair, art department, and on set etiquette. All of the schools and organizations referenced above have robust websites that provide more information about their programs and details of how and when to register.

GOLDtini to celebrate Allied Arts’ 50th anniversary Allied Arts is gearing up for ARTini, the annual martini tasting event and art auction that raises critical funds for the arts, to be held on Oct. 22 from 7-11 pm at the Myriad Botanical Gardens. This year’s event, GOLDtini, is presented by Tito’s Handmade Vodka and is Oklahoma City’s largest cocktail competition and art auction, bringing together local restaurants, entertainment and artists for a dynamic evening benefitting the arts in our community. Along with taste testing custom cocktails from several of Oklahoma City’s most popular restaurants, guests can also bid on one-of-akind art by local artists and participate in the silent auction for a

chance to win unique experiences, exquisite wine, memorabilia and more. Come dressed to impress in your shiniest gold attire. For the first time, GOLDini will be held at the Myriad Botanical Gardens, allowing guests to enjoy both indoor and outdoor spaces. The art auction will also be made available online with a virtualaccess ticket at a reduced price, providing supporters a variety of ways to participate. Each year, ARTini helps Allied Arts fund programs that touch the lives of more than one million people, including dynamic community performances and events, and valuable arts experiences for children, veterans and the elderly,

many in underserved areas. Allied Arts helps partner organizations offer free or reduced-price events and provide innovative arts education across the state, enabling more members of our communities to experience the arts. For the second year in a row, artists whose work is selected for the art auction can receive 100% of the commission from the sale of their piece. “Being able to give these artists 100% commission was a goal for the planning committee as a small way to help support the art community during these challenging times,” said Tate. “But that wouldn’t have been possible without the generous support of our donors,

and we hope the guests are excited to join us in supporting these artists by bidding on this one-of-akind art at the auction.” Along with Presenting Sponsor Tito’s Handmade Vodka, other major sponsors of GOLDtini include the Inasmuch Foundation, Paycom, Coop Ale Works, W&W AFCO Steel, Devon Energy, Freestyle Creative, OG&E, The Oklahoman, Bank 7, Heartland and Linda Slawson. Tickets are on sale now at ARTiniOKC.com. GOLDini tickets are $100 and must be purchased in advance. Guests must be at least 21 and display a valid ID to enter the event. My Place at the Table: A recipe for a delicious life in Paris, by Alexander Lobrano

IN THE DISTRICT COURT OF OKLAHOMA COUNTY STATE OF OKLAHOMA

IN THE MATTER OF THE ESTATE OF WILLIAM W. REEDER, Deceased

W

hat an unusual book My Place at the Table is: a memoir of a timid boy from Connecticut who pursues the role of a food critic and becomes a wizard in promoting French cooking, bistros and actually becomes a food critic for the largest business and newspaper of the French speaking world. He covered food and travel for Bon Appetit, Food & Wine, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times and has shown up often on the CBS Morning News, NBC’s Today, and Chef’s Table. Spun like a novel, his characters become your friends, from the bourgeois neighbors to the likes of Julia Child. Unexpected humor pops up on almost every page, as in the nude beach scene. The names are NOT changed and the story of this young undeclared gay guy becomes hysterical as it progresses from frick to frack. What would the life story of the world-famous be without its touch of pain and pathos? The struggle between nine-year-old Alex and his father, an Amhurst alum who had no use for girlie things for his son would continue long after the bloom of success. The shame began after Alex’s teacher, Miss Armitage, assigned a paper on “one of your favorite things.” The paper received an “A” from the teacher and smiles from the mother, but his father threw it in the wastebasket. He thought a “BLT sandwich” was an embarrassing subject and not macho enough for his son. This delightful read closes out with an unexpected copy of Alexander Lobrano’s “Little Black Book” listing thirty Paris restaurants from places for grand events to simple three-course a la carte meals (without wine) along with the addresses and description of his favorite dishes at each place. So, If it has been a good experience, be sure to tip your hat to him when he returns to his place at the table. What an unusual book My Place at the Table is: a memoir of a timid boy from Connecticut. Thanks to Full Circle Book Store for sharing these books with FRIDAY readers.

HALL HAPPENINGS ing blood shortage due to the COVID-19 pandemic means that donors are needed regularly to replenish the blood supply. As such, Kindness Club President Campbell Leiterman noted the importance of the drive’s abil-

ity to gather members of the school community together based on the shared and significant experience of donating blood. Following her donation, first-time donor Alli Williams said, “Because of the healthy human body’s incredible ability to replenish blood, donating to those who are in the hospital and do not have that same ability is an amazing way to give back.” By the end of Thurs-

day, Charger donors had benefited over 150 patients. In recognition of this achievement, OBI committed $10 per donor, or $400, to a nonprofit of Kindness Club’s choosing. Club members plan to select a charity in the coming days. Kindness Club aims to spread meaningful kindness throughout the school campus and greater community. Thank you to everyone who donated to this worthwhile cause.

Losing Leonard Sullivan leaves a big hole I

knew Leonard first as a landlord, then as a friend, and then as a mentor. When the OKC FRIDAY offices opened on Quail Plaza Drive, we rented a suite from Leonard Sullivan. He was a friendly landlord who dropped in on days when the rent check was not even due. We would sit at my desk and chat about what was going on around us. In those days, Hefner Road was a two-lane road and in appalling repair. I started writing stories about it. I called city officials and county commissioners and quoted them in stories. Leonard came over and sat down in my office after one story, “You are not calling the

right people.” Then he started explaining the facts of life in the Oklahoma City government and county government. He told me who I needed to get on board to make Hefner Road a decent street. With Leonard’s advice and several more months of stories, City Councilman Eric Grove and I cut the ribbon on a new Hefner Road. Eric crowned me “Miss Hefner Road” and presented me with a ribbon to wear saying that. I will always think Leonard cooked up my decorations. Later in our friendship, Leonard and I started arguing about Anita Hill. I was on her side. He was not. I got “huffy” and unhappy with Leonard.

He was a State Representative at the time. A month or so later, he dropped in the office to tell me the legislature was presenting me a special award. Sure enough, Leonard introduced me from the podium in the state legislature and gave me an award. I didn’t understand what I had done to deserve it. Still, I stood before the legislature. He made an excellent speech extolling my virtues and all the good I was doing in the city as president of the Community Literacy Centers. Leonard had a unique ability to make everyone feel important. He spent his whole life building up other people. He did it not to aggrandize himself but to make other people feel good. He was the life of any party. He and Marilyn hosted many people in their home in Val Verde for politicians and good causes. Always laughing and joking, everyone loved Leonard. He and Marilyn were very involved in their church. Leland Gourley used to say he was a “Fiddling or Non-Fiddling” Carmelite. I do not remember. But he was a man loved by all who knew him.

Irish face familiar foe Carl Albert for district lead By Jason Jewell Sports Editor Nearly every season for the most of the last decade, the winner of the McGuinness-Carl Albert game goes on to win the district championship.
