“Chickasaw Warrior” designed by Enoch Kelly Haney Chickasaw Garden, OCU Campus

Located in the heart of Oklahoma City, the Oklahoma City University campus is within easy driving distance to a wide range of cultural, educational, civic, religious, entertainment, sporting, shopping, and dining options. As a city redefining itself, Oklahoma City’s contemporary, spirited environment blends with its deep western heritage to create a place where culture and commerce thrive. With renowned festivals, national sporting events, treasure-filled museums, and a variety of districts highlighting arts and entertainment, the possibilities for adventure and fun in Oklahoma City abound. In addition to experiencing a rich local culture, OCU students have the opportunity to study almost anywhere—Australia, Ecuador, France, Ireland, Italy, England, Costa Rica, Russia, and more. OCU holds affiliation agreements with private study abroad organizations such as Cultural Experiences Abroad (CEA), International Studies Abroad (ISA), and Study Abroad Italy (SAI), to name a few. OCU prides itself on a history of academic excellence. The Oklahoma City University Honors Program is a university-wide program open to academically talented and motivated students enrolled in any of OCU’s undergraduate programs. The program offers students the opportunity to attend honors conferences throughout the country. Most recently, students have traveled to Salt Lake City, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., and Chicago.

STUDENT TESTIMONIALS

Why did you choose to attend Oklahoma City University? The professors make it a point to know their students and help them succeed and the campus is so full of activities that there’s a niche for everyone. When I saw how involved and friendly the students, faculty, and staff members were, I knew that OCU was the place for me!

KYLE WALLACE Senior, Mass Communications: Journalism

What organizations are you involved with? I’ve been actively involved in the American Indian Scholarship Advisory Board, Native American Society, Student Government Association, Kappa Sigma Fraternity, and Delta Epsilon Iota Honor Society. I also am a Resident Assistant for University Residence Life, an editor for Student Publications, and previously worked as a Gold Star Ambassador for the Office of Admissions and as a Student Ambassador in the Career Services office.

from Moore, OK What is your best memory at OCU? Every year Native American Society holds an annual spring contest powwow. Last year I had the opportunity to serve on the planning committee helping organize and run the powwow. It was the longest 13 hours of my life but working with a great committee and seeing how much fun everyone had celebrating our Native American culture made it worthwhile. Also, the Student Activities Council’s “Big Event.” So many students show up and it’s a great opportunity to relax before everyone gets swamped with finals week. What is your favorite thing about Oklahoma City? I love the diversity of Oklahoma City and all it has to offer. Within minutes you can find yourself taking in the art of the Paseo District, enjoying great pho in the Asian District, or cheering on the Thunder downtown.

What organizations are you involved with? I am involved in the Investment Club, where we try to beat the market and make money for incoming business student scholarships. I am also active in the Hispanic Student Association, which promotes the importance of receiving a higher education among Latinos. Lastly, I participate in the Accounting Club events.

MISAEL MARTINEZ Junior, Economics and Finance from Oklahoma City, OK

What is your favorite thing about OCU? Being a part of the Investment Club has been a great experience. We were able to invest real money in the stock market. Learning how to manage something like that was awesome. I also like how Oklahoma City University promotes the experience of studying abroad. OCU does a great job of encouraging all students to get out of their comfort zones to go check what’s out there. What is your favorite OCU event and why? Free movie-Thursday nights. I really like those sorts of events because they allow us to take a break from college and just hang out with friends.

Why did you choose to attend Oklahoma City University? Honestly, I came here by accident. I had been accepted to a large public school and when I visited that school I found I didn’t like it; too big for my taste. I came to OCU and instantly felt at home. I am now entering my senior year and couldn’t be happier.

Karis Myer

What organizations are you involved with? I’m a Resident Assistant (RA) and have spent the past summer as part of the Summer RA Leadership Team. In addition, I am a member of Alpha Chi Omega: Gamma Tau.

Senior, Studio Art from Castle Rock, CO

What is your best memory at OCU? My first homecoming at OCU was a blast. I was participating within my sorority house and the sense of community and belonging just hit me like a ton of bricks. I fell in love with OCU during that week.

UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES

WASHINGTON INTERNSHIPS FOR NATIVE STUDENTS (WINS)

BLACK STUDENT ASSOCIATION (BSA)

WINS is an agreement between Oklahoma City University and American University. OCU may nominate one or more students, who are at least a second semester sophomore, to study in Washington, D.C. for the program. Ideal candidates for the internship will be those studying in the Oxford Plan. Students who are selected receive several WINS benefits, including transportation to and from Washington, housing and a meal plan, a stipend, and AU tuition and fees for nine credit hours for Fall and Spring semesters (six for Summer).

As part of the BSA family, the overall mission is to provide unity and support, as well as encourage servant leadership and academic excellence for all students at Oklahoma City University. BSA members benefit from having a student family on campus, and participating in mentally enriching activities that include weekly meetings, study sessions, OCU homecoming, poetry nights, and various philanthropic and fundraising events.

THE OXFORD PLAN

The AASA promotes and examines the diversity of the Asian Community at Oklahoma City University. As a member of AASA, students are given the opportunity to learn about cultures that are both familiar and new by emphasizing the importance of diversity throughout a community. AASA hosts multiple social events throughout the semester, which are open to the public, and focus on placing diversity in the spotlight.

The Oxford Plan is an interdisciplinary major administered by the departments of philosophy and political science. It includes preferential admission to the Oklahoma City University School of Law. The major is patterned after the University of Oxford. Participants in the Oxford Plan may also qualify to complete their combined B.A. and J.D. degrees in only six years, rather than the usual seven. Participants who successfully complete all of the foreign language and Oxford Plan requirements are admitted to the School of Law and may begin law school after only three years of undergraduate work. Their B.A. degrees are received after successfully completing the first year of law school.

NATIVE AMERICAN STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS The Native American Society (NAS) is both a social and a cultural group of students on the campus of Oklahoma City University. Through NAS, OCU Natives can connect with one another; however, membership is not limited to Native Americans; all students are also encouraged to join. In 2015, the NAS

organized its eighth Annual Spring Contest Powwow as a celebration of community, family, and spirituality.

ASIAN AMERICAN STUDENT ASSOCIATION (AASA)

HISPANIC STUDENT ASSOCIATION (HSA) HSA advocates Hispanic culture at OCU by securing representation of Hispanics in the university community, educating the university about issues of importance to Hispanic peoples, facilitating interaction between cultures and providing academic, social, and philanthropic activities with the goal of breaking cultural barriers and creating friendships. HSA members host and participate in several activities throughout the year, including campus outreaches (e.g. Hispanic Day at the Cafeteria) and attending both state and national conferences (e.g. Latino Youth Leadership Conference and the National Council of La Raza).

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS REPRESENT 10.5% OF THE TOTAL STUDENT POPULATION AT OKLAHOMA CITY UNIVERSITY. A total of 41 countries are represented on the OCU campus. To name a few, students are from China, India, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Canada and Taiwan. At OCU, we work to integrate our international and domestic students by sharing culture through community-wide programs (e.g. the International Food Fair). Oklahoma City University understands the benefit of having an international campus and promotes understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity, as well as fosters positive human relations for all students.
