On April 4, 1930, Oklahoma City University presented its first operetta: Gilbert and Sullivan’s HMS Pinafore. It must have gone well. Inspired by this early success, every few years, with great effort, another show was performed. As our talent pool and audiences grew over the next two decades, the university established the Oklahoma Opera and Music Theater Company. In 1951, a tradition began that we proudly celebrate today: 60 years of consecutive productions of operas and musicals, including international tours, world premieres and performances of 150 different shows. No other university can claim a longer history of fully staged seasons of opera and musical theater productions. We are proud to have educated so many students who have gone on to become professionals in the field: singers, orchestra musicians, conductors, music directors, composers, lighting and set designers, costumers and tour managers. Our graduates have reached the top of their profession, performing in the great opera houses of the world and in music theater venues from Broadway to Bayreuth and beyond. They have become teachers, passing on knowledge of what they learned on this campus and along the way. Few schools can claim this level of professional success among their alumni: winners of Tony Awards, Emmys, Grammys, Critics Outer Circle Awards, Metropolitan Opera awards, and many more. We look to you -- our audience, our patrons – in gratitude for your support of this treasure, this incubator of the arts and creativity, that we have nurtured in Oklahoma. One of the longest-running Off-Broadway shows of all time, this affectionate spoof of 1950s sci-fi movies is from the songwriting team of Ashman and Menken, who went on to pen Disney classics The Little Mermaid, Beauty And The Beast and Aladdin.

Each season, OCU’s Oklahoma Opera and Music Theater Company presents two opera and two music theater productions featuring lush orchestrations, dazzling costumes, and professional lighting and sets. Mainstage performances are in the historic Kirkpatrick Auditorium.
SPOTLIGHT PRODUCTIONS
One opera and one music theater production each season is presented with intimate staging and piano accompaniment, in Burg Theater. This year’s Spotlight Series shows are Little Shop of Horrors and The Mother of Us All.
