spring 2013

from the president Spring is a time of new beginnings, and that is definitely ringing true here at Oklahoma City University as the redbuds are in full bloom and the Class of 2013 prepares for graduation. Oklahoma City University is on the move—both in terms of physical location and positive momentum. On April 10, we celebrated the decision to move the Oklahoma City University School of Law downtown with a campaign kick-off event attended by more than 400 people. This move is a testament to the belief in our university and our city. We are on the cutting edge of a trend for law schools around the country to move from a school’s main campus to a downtown location. With Oklahoma City’s growth and bright future, I believe there is no other city in America that offers more opportunity for a downtown law school. Oklahoma City is thriving and we are excited about being in the heart of the city. Our students can benefit from easy access to courtrooms, to law offices, to restaurants, to apartments, green spaces, and downtown housing. And, Oklahoma City will win due to the economic and social impact of bringing 600 professionals into our city’s core. In addition, the law school move will provide us with more space on our 23rd Street campus to grow our arts and sciences offerings. On another front, I am happy to announce we have completed the research and design phase of the university rebranding initiative. You will start to see an exciting result of that effort as the new Oklahoma City University logo begins to make an appearance in printed pieces, on our website, on campus signage, and through other marketing/branding initiatives. The new logo works in tandem with our branding strategy to provide a strong, consistent look across the full range of OCU media and materials. The new graphic identity is a fresh take on an iconic OCU image. The contemporary star denotes motion, while at the same time harkening to the star atop the university’s Gold Star Building. Dedicated in December 1952, the building stands as a tribute to heroes who gave their lives in World War II. It also is a reminder of OCU’s longstanding presence in our community. Through the new mark, we will make more people aware of OCU’s tradition of meeting the changing needs of our students and stakeholders. The strong icon of the star also reflects our “Stars” mascot and exhibits optimism for the future of OCU and our students. This new logo differentiates OCU from other higher education institutions in our market. It will take several months to fully integrate the new logo into campus signage. Beginning in July, our Campus Store will carry apparel and merchandise featuring the new logo. You can follow the bookstore on Facebook to get previews of the new items. In August, the new logo and messaging will be out in full force as we welcome incoming freshmen and returning students to campus. These are exciting times to be a part of Oklahoma City University. In the words of Shakespeare, “April hath put a spirit of youth in everything.” At OCU, that seems to be our motto throughout the year as we set out on a path of growth and renewal.

letters Parents Praise Professors (Editor’s Note: Vice President for University Church Relations Maggie Ball received the following note from the mother of an OCU student commending OCU faculty and staff for their personal attention to students.) Maggie, My husband and I want to extend our thanks to you for your efforts in securing our son a university apartment. He has settled in and the apartment seems to be working out for him. His health issues last semester made it a difficult semester for him. We are blessed that he attends a university where his professors and administrators alike care about him beyond his performance in the classroom. At one point during last semester, I asked him if he had explained his absences to his professors and he said to me, “Mom, my professors know what is going on. Most of them are praying for me.” I can’t imagine a better model of a student-teacher relationship. Thank you again for your assistance with the room and for helping make it possible for our son to attend Oklahoma City University.

Family of Pastors Traces Roots to OCU To the Editor: We met and attended Oklahoma City University from 1948 to 1952. We then attended SMU in Dallas at Perkins Seminary, getting our master’s degrees. We were accepted as Methodist missionaries to Brazil in 1956. We learned Portuguese. Leonard worked as a pastor, district superintendent and director of a 1,000-student school (first through 12th grades). Gloria taught English and Bible and worked with women and children. We have four children. Larry was at St. Paul School of Theology in Kansas City for 26 years and helped start the seminary at OCU. He is the associate pastor/director of finances at the First Methodist Church in Columbia, Mo. Gary is the pastor of Avondale United Methodist Church in Kansas City. His wife, Jodi, is also a Methodist pastor and their son, Andrew, is entering seminary in the spring. He has been a delegate to two general conferences. So that is five United Methodist pastors in one family—OCU you did well in launching us. We are now 82-years-old and have been married for 62 years, and we have eight grandchildren.

University Adapts to Students’ Needs (The office of Alumni Relations received the following letter from alumna Joye Boulton Swain.) When I returned to Oklahoma City from Mexico, I went to the University of Oklahoma to enroll. I was told that I couldn't until I had my official transcript from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada and the Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores, Monterrey, Mexico. My grade reports were not enough. At Oklahoma City University, the Dean of Arts and Sciences sat down with me and looked at my grade reports, and said we could guess how they would be accredited by an agency in Washington DC, and I could enroll based on that. He was kind, helpful and willing to believe my documentation. Six months or so later, when I finally received official transcripts, we completed my enrollment. I was treated like a person and I appreciated it. It was a good decision. I had teachers who were involved in what they taught. My Spanish teacher, Hope Housel, was not as fluent in Spanish as I was. She immediately noticed this and called me in for a conference. She told me not to bother with classes and she would give me assignments that we would go over together. She was a wonderful teacher and a fine person. Later, we bumped into each other in Europe and spent some time together. OCU was able to adapt and meet students’ individual needs. Since graduation, I’ve traveled and studied around the world. My husband and I worked as writers and teachers. We adopted 3 children (2 from Mexico and 1 from Costa Rica). After his death, I adopted 7 children (4 from Brazil, 2 from Guatemala and 1 from Russia). Currently, I’m raising six of my grandchildren (ages 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8). Their mother was killed last February.

A Job Well Done Dear President Henry, We caught one of your campus organizations doing something great—and wanted to let you know about them! The brothers of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity hosted the “Spaghetti for Soldiers” dinner and raised more than $1,000 to support the USO. College life can be busy and hectic, and priorities are not always on helping others. When a group reaches out to help those who protect and defend our country, we have to take a moment to make sure that their great efforts are recognized. We wanted to let you know that you have some true leaders on your campus. On behalf of the military families we serve, thank you. Liberal Arts,

Architecture, and a Career A PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE By Susan C. Barber, Provost

Photos by Dorothy Tennery

The idea for this article came to me as my husband, David Nagle, and I spent a beautiful October afternoon visiting the houses on the Heritage Hills Home and Garden Tour. One of the houses had a marvelous addition, which was attributed to George Seminoff, architect of Wilson House, the president’s home at Oklahoma City University. I then started thinking about our beautiful chapel that was designed by internationally famous architect Pietro Belluschi. One thing led to another in my head, and now this biology-professor-turned-provost is writing about buildings, more or less. One could legitimately ask why anyone would want to write about architecture at Oklahoma City University. And more importantly, what does a biologist know

about architecture? To address the latter question—not very much, but it has been a long-time interest of mine, and I have come to love OCU’s very interesting buildings, both old and new, and I suspect many readers are unaware of the history of the architecture on campus. The answer to the “why” question lies in a desire to praise the virtues of a liberal arts education and explain how being liberally educated really does lead to a love of learning, and even the development of one’s avocation in life. Additionally, it seemed like a good time for me to contribute such an article, as I complete my 30th year at the university, and midcentury architecture, and architecture in general, has experienced a major resurgence in popularity.

Oklahoma City University President Robert Henry often speaks of the significance of the liberal arts in the education of our students. He describes the liberal arts as “stuff ” we all need to know to be good citizens. To help students develop into well-rounded individuals, we have designed a curriculum that fosters the development of analytical abilities, communications skills, and creative thought, all providing the basis for lifelong learning. An educated citizenry leads to better civic engagement for all of us. In today’s world, most of our students will change jobs seven or eight times over the course of a lifetime, and many of those jobs have not yet been created. For students to face the challenges of such a world, we must educate our students to

have the ability to collaborate, take risks, think creatively, and work in experiential environments. There are other reasons to provide our students with a great liberal arts education—it develops in them an appreciation and love for disciplines other than the ones in which they will be employed. If we do our jobs well, students will come to understand that exposure to the arts, literature, music, science, math, and to the diversity of other cultures and religions really can lead to an enriched and fulfilled life. It does not mean that they will be experts in those fields or about other cultures, but rather, they will gain understanding and an appreciation of all that is in the world. I graduated from a religiously affiliated liberal arts university and always had the goal of becoming a professor at a university with similar focus. As an undergraduate, my curriculum consisted of such courses as music appreciation and art history. We also had to declare a minor.

4

I chose English literature. The professors in my biology courses and English courses viewed research and writing very differently, but those differences helped me broaden my abilities. All of this led to my interest in architecture, which, for me, is a field that integrates both the arts and sciences. Somewhere along the way, spurred by my love of the chapel, I started reading and learning about architects and their designs. I know that I am not remotely expert in architecture, but I also know that I don’t have to be expert—I just have to embrace the joy I get from learning about this field. If not for my liberal arts background, I am convinced that I would not have been able to develop this interest that has enriched my life as I look locally and travel widely. It has been a priceless gift. It is the goal of the university to produce citizens who embrace the world beyond their narrow fields, and I think that I am an example of a person from a small West Texas town who learned to broaden her horizons and impart a love of learning to her students along the way. Now, about the buildings at Oklahoma City University. During the past 10 years, the university has experienced a building boom with the construction of Oklahoma United Methodist Hall, the Meinders School of Business, the Wanda L. Bass School of Music, and the Kramer School of Nursing East. The university also dedicated the newly renovated Tom and Brenda McDaniel University Center and the Edith Kinney Gaylord Center, home of the Ann Lacy School of American

Dance and Arts Management. In November 2012, Oklahoma City University purchased the old Central High School, which will be repurposed to house the school of law. This building was designed by Solomon Andrew Layton, architect of the state capitol and the historic Skirvin Hotel. With this purchase, the university expanded its reach into downtown Oklahoma City and has added to its assets a historically significant building, designed by one of Oklahoma’s best-known architects. While one might think that Oklahoma City University’s building boom of the last decade is unprecedented, that really is not the case. In the summer of 1954, Oklahoma City University experienced one of the worst fires in Oklahoma City’s history, destroying the student center, the gymnasium, the industrial arts building, and the physical plant. A few days after the fire, The Oklahoman published an editorial calling on the city to help the university. The paper extolled the virtues of then-president Dr. C.Q. Smith as an important leader in the city, and the editorial also described the importance of the university to the city’s cultural and economic development. The editors in this editorial of June 30, 1954, write “the dream of the ultimate Oklahoma City University is a magnificent concept, not only as a beautiful campus, studded with fine buildings, but as an integral part of civic and industrial life, and a significant unit in the vaster picture which includes other nations.” After publication, Oklahoma City University engaged in a successful fundraising campaign to rebuild what was lost on campus. Six months later, by the end of 1954, three buildings were replaced: the industrial arts building (now Dawson-Loeffler Science and Mathematics Center), the student union (current Tom and Brenda McDaniel University Center), and the physical plant. A replacement for the

gymnasium would finally come in the form of the iconic Frederickson Fieldhouse, which was constructed about five years after the fire, and was subsequently demolished a few years ago to build Oklahoma Methodist Hall. After the fieldhouse opened, the university set into motion plans for buildings and renovations that would usher in the mid-century building phase. In the mid to late 1960s, moving into the 1970s, and primarily under the direction of President John Olson, the university capital projects included the chapel; Walker Hall, a dormitory for women; the Dulaney-Browne Library, furnished with iconic Saarinen tables and Bertoia chairs; an expansion of the student-faculty center, which still has its mid-century external appearance; and a remodel of the Kirkpatrick Fine Arts Center that included the addition of a small theatre (now known as Burg Auditorium); and Wilson House, dedicated in 1975. The library and university center still display some of their mid-century features, but with renovation to better serve students in the 21st century, much was changed to accommodate new learning spaces and technology. The architectural firm for the Fine Arts building renovation and Wilson House was the firm of George Seminoff— Seminoff, Bowman, and Bode. It was his addition to the house in Heritage Hills that provided the seed for this article. Wilson House is an outstanding structure that is widely shared with the university community. The light in Wilson House is integral to the display of the fabulous art collection of President Henry and Dr. Jan Henry. The open floor plan is gallery-like, and the walls beg for art to be exhibited on them. Additionally, the open architecture of this mid-century house provides excellent space for entertaining, noted by the fact that two Steinway pianos can be

found there. It is also a home built for scholars with its lovely study that has the capacity to house thousands of books. Finally, the most important building constructed in this era was the Bishop W. Angie Smith Chapel, consecrated May 9, 1968. In the interest of full disclosure, the chapel is my favorite architectural entity at Oklahoma City University, and I consider it not only to be our most important mid-century structure, but I find it to be the most important building at OCU. It was featured by the Oklahoma Chapter

If we do our jobs well, students will come to understand that exposure to the arts, literature, music, science, math, and to the diversity of other cultures and religions really can lead to an enriched and fulfilled life. of the American Institute of Architects as one of the 100 buildings in Oklahoma to be celebrated during Oklahoma’s centennial year. According to the Oklahoma AIA centennial guidebook, it was previously named as one of the Top 10 buildings in the state as well. Some would argue that it does not have the grandeur of some of our more modern buildings, but it represents the heart of the university, and its design by Pietro Belluschi, designer of the famous MetLife building in New York, is both timeless and beautiful. The first time you walk into the chapel, you can’t help but notice two major centerpieces—the pipe organ and the stun-

ning stained glass windows. The organ was custom designed, and the acoustics provided by the vaulted ceiling make the chapel a perfect venue for concerts. Every Christmas, the Bass School of Music presents Christmas Vespers, and the vocal and instrumental performance by 250-plus musicians is for the ages. The many weddings, funerals, convocations, and quiet moments one spends there can become an emotional and spiritual core of time at OCU. The designer for the windows was Gyorgy Kepes, who, according to a 1968 article in the Oklahoma Journal, produced a color scheme for each window’s orientation. As one meditates and reflects in that marvelous space, it is a joy to watch the reflection of the light from those brilliant windows and to imagine their representation of nature in all of its glory. External features of the chapel, including the meditation gardens on the north and south sides and the ascending spire, tell visitors this is a special place at this United Methodist university, appropriately dedicated to worship, convocation, sacred music, and meditation. On the surface, Oklahoma City University looks like a traditional liberal arts campus with its timeless brick buildings, such as the administration building and the Gold Star building; however, there are mid-century jewels, primarily constructed during the presidency of Dr. John Olson, that deserve recognition 50 years after they were built. The next time you walk around campus, I hope you will remember that OCU has provided a nurturing space for its students for more than a century and that the buildings reflect the times in which they were designed. The university is an interesting microcosm of architectural history. Susan barber • sbarber@okcu.edu

Education at its Core Law School to Take Up Residence in

Iconic Downtown Landmark By Sandy Pantlik

With a growing cache of accolades touting one of the most successful urban development efforts in the nation, Oklahoma City now can claim another attribute for its expanding cityscape. A landmark building that once housed Oklahoma City’s first high school will soon be the new downtown home of the prestigious Oklahoma City University School of Law. “The law school has been looking for an ideal downtown location for its students for several years,” said Law School Dean Valerie K. Couch. “This magnificent building came to our attention and it ignited our imagination. Here we will be able to build new and dynamic connections with the legal and business community and contribute to the growth and progress of this great city of ours.” The OCU School of Law will occupy the building by Aug. 2015, and will bring with it an economic boost for downtown thanks to the students, faculty, staff and administrators who will be working in the city’s core. The move is expected to coincide with the completion of Project 180, a massive downtown-wide improvement initiative. “Moving the law school to downtown Oklahoma City will bring more than 600 professionals to the center of the city’s economic development. That means busy, high-achieving, energetic, ambitious people will be living, studying, learning, teaching,

working, dining, meeting and, from time to time, relaxing and enjoying the arts, culture and sports in the heart of the city,” said Couch. Virtually the entire operation of the OCU School of Law will be administered from the downtown location, creating exciting connections with the thriving mid-city area. “This is a significant move for our law school, our university, our Oklahoma City,” said OCU President Robert Henry. “OCU students will have more opportunities for access to courtrooms and major law firms, which is a valuable addition to their learning experiences. Many will move downtown, further vitalizing our growing and vibrant city.”

For decades, Oklahoma City University School of Law has served as the city’s law school. The move to the heart of downtown will now make this dynamic and mutually beneficial connection abundantly clear. Our school is here to serve this great city and all its citizens. And our School of Law, like the city itself, is emerging as a prime destination.

OCU School of Law Dean Valerie Couch

Civic leader, OCU Trustee Chairman and former Oklahoma City Mayor Ron Norick said the move downtown provides symbiotic benefits for the school and the city. “We will be glad to join the fast-growing downtown business community,” Norick said. “This move will benefit our law students tremendously and add hundreds of young professionals to downtown Oklahoma City.”

Reclaiming Downtown OKC’s Educational Lineage

The OCU law school will take up residence in the Gothic-style building that once served as the final home for Oklahoma City’s first high school. Central High School opened its doors in 1910 at the corner of N.W. 7th and Robinson on the edge of what is now Midtown, a flourishing district of urban dwelling and local eateries.

8

focus spring 2013

Classes were convened at Central High School for nearly 60 years. During the 1970s, the building stood empty for a time until it was purchased by Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in 1981 and remodeled as office space. Most recently, the Central High School building was home to the state headquarters for American Farmers & Ranchers Mutual Insurance Company. The building was purchased by OCU in late 2012. Included on the National Register of Historic Buildings, the 177,000-square-foot stately structure was designed by architect Solomon Andrew Layton, who also was the visionary behind many other iconic buildings silhouetted against the Oklahoma City skyline, including the State Capitol and Skirvin Hotel.

Historic Connections

While Central High School cemented its role as an educational cornerstone near the heart of downtown, Oklahoma City University’s roots were planted just a few miles northwest by the Methodist Church in 1904. Originally named Epworth University, the Oklahoma City University campus began to take shape at its current location at 23rd Street and Blackwelder in 1922. The OCU School of Law’s origin is directly tied to Epworth University School of Law, Oklahoma’s first law school, established in 1907. In 1952, Oklahoma City University acquired the Oklahoma City College of Law and the OCU School of Law was officially born. The school has more than 6,000 living alumni, and graduates can be found in every state and around the world.

Core Contributions

When thinking about the future of the law school move, Henry refers to the words of Winston Churchill: “First we shape our buildings, and afterward our buildings shape us.” “OCU specializes in helping students rise to their dreams,” said Henry. “By renovating an historic building in the heart of downtown, it is my hope we will also play a role in helping Oklahoma City reach its full potential. Our goal is to not only breathe new life into a building, but contribute in a very positive way to the economy and energy of our city’s core.” The move comes with unanimous support of the law school’s faculty and administrators, who see it as an exceptional location with close access to courthouses and many of the city’s law firms. Law students, faculty and staff will occupy most of the building, with enough space to also house the clinical programs, law review and the law library under one roof. With renovation plans underway, Henry says the building will also serve as a venue for some the university’s special events including entertainment performances and business functions. “Adding to the activity will be hundreds of people already working and living in or near downtown Oklahoma City who will take advantage of the vibrant life of the law school to attend

conferences; continuing education programs; guest lectures; panel discussions; interdisciplinary programs relating to business, health care, energy and financial institutions; film series, and even performances from the university’s world-class music, theater and art departments,” said Dean Couch.

A Growing Trend for Growing Cities

A recent article in The National Law Journal cited OCU as a notable example of taking law schools into the hearts of thriving cities. A downtown location becomes not only an element of a great legal education, it also leads to many job opportunities and increased employment for students. Additionally, it provides a perfect location for part-time or evening programs for aspiring professionals already working in big-city environments. Oklahoma City University joins a prestigious group of universities in making a move downtown a reality. Other universities with downtown law schools include the University of Memphis, Suffolk University in Boston, Georgetown University in Washington D.C., Loyola University in Chicago, Golden Gate University in San Francisco, Northwestern in Chicago, the University of South Texas in Houston and St. Louis University. “The school will have a tremendously positive impact economically and culturally. And for the first time, OKC will be able to boast of a big university presence to the middle of downtown—a recognized feature of a world-class city,” Couch said. Sandy Pantlik • slpantlik@okcu.edu

Team Green Oklahoma City University will implement a new energy management plan this spring aimed at making the university one of the most energy-efficient schools in the nation. OCU has partnered with THG Energy in Tulsa to create effective energy management programs, lower usage during peak demand hours and educate students and employees about methods for conserving energy at work and home. Though OCU is a private university, the plan addresses Gov. Mary Fallin’s energy efficiency law requiring public higher education

institutions and state agencies to improve efficiency and conservation measures 20 percent by 2020. OCU Director of Facilities Jeff Castleberry notes that OCU already has cut average monthly energy use by 8 percent since 2010. He expects efficiency to improve another 5 percent in the next year and 20 percent before 2020. “As a leader in private, liberal arts education, Oklahoma City University continues to implement innovative ways to nurture our students in a campus community that is both

caring and creative,” said President Robert Henry. “Thanks to proactive efforts by our facilities department, we are already on the cutting edge of energy saving innovations for private colleges and universities. Through our new energy management plan, we will continue to reduce consumption.” Ten percent of OCU faculty and staff will work together across campus on “Green Teams” to improve energy efficiency in classrooms, offices and dorms.

‘Amateur’ Professor Brings History

(even overweight professors in matching coats and ties with grade books) is not always true. A healthy skepticism that does not slide into cynical nihilism should be one of the most important products in our students.” Along with the healthy skepticism, he’d like his students to carry “enough factual knowledge to make informed, interpretive judgments on their own.” To help impart that knowledge, he has orchestrated memorable experiences for his classes. Alumnus Mike Henry recalls his War in the Modern World class in 1989, in which Cobb “deputized me and a couple of cohorts to role-play a surprise terrorist negotiation. He had us walk into class unannounced, wearing robes and branding antique weaponry. We had a very specific set of demands and had been

instructed to threaten nuclear attack. The rest of the class had five minutes to form an impromptu United Nations and negotiate.” Henry chuckles that he’s pretty sure his terrorist group won the negotiation. He says that the most valuable thing Cobb’s classes taught him was “to connect ideas, narratives and events throughout history—how to see the world and my place in it differently.” Another alumnus, Brett Manis (who had 36 hours of classes with Cobb), says “Dr. Cobb had a way of telling stories that tied history to different fields—dance, music, science, and anything else so the students had some way of connecting. He helped me become a much better student, historian and person. I had to question things I never wanted to question, but he never once disrespected students who had different views. The only thing we had to worry about was March Madness, the NCAA basketball championship tournament. If Duke fell early, he wasn’t happy.” Cobb’s affinity for Duke basketball stems partly from what he calls “tribalism” for his undergraduate alma mater, and partly from the academic success (more than 90% graduation rate) of Coach Mike Kryzewski’s Blue Devils, as well as their on-court successes.

After Duke and the Army, Cobb earned his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees at Emory University. He came to OCU in 1981 and has taught a variety of courses, including World Civilization, U.S. History, History of Warfare, America in the Middle East, Contemporary Japan, Film Noir and American Popular Culture. Henry’s and Manis’ comments verify Cobb’s primary teaching goal: “I’ve entered my classroom every day at OCU for over 30 years determined to use history to equip OCU students to make wise choices in their personal, service and professional lives.” His ideal reaction from a student was exemplified after an exam several years ago when a freshman dancer gravely inquired, “Dr. Cobb, do you get together with my religion and literature professors to make sure everything fits together?” Whereupon Cobb responded, “No, we didn’t do that. You did! You figured out what you heard in your religion class meshed with your lit class, and gained perspective from your history class. That’s what excellent minds do with the liberal arts, but it wasn’t professors scheming; it was you thinking and growing.” End-of-semester, anonymous student evaluations consistently praise Cobb’s teaching, for example: “Even though there is an astronomical amount of reading in this class, I thoroughly enjoy it. I love that I am constantly being stimulated to think. Not only has this class taught me about World Civilization; it has also kept me updated on current events around the world.” Another student wrote, “This class has been so helpful in expanding my desire to stay abreast of current affairs and relating my life to far-reaching issues of geopolitics. I feel like I am better equipped to understand the workings of the world for having this class.” Cobb’s later travels have including teaching for OCU in Singapore, where he met Christine Soh, whom he married in 1997. She is now an organizational administration instructor at the University of Central Oklahoma. His love of music is shared by his son Cary, a piano performance Baylor graduate with a master’s degree in conducting from the University of Louisville. Cary also is an accomplished trumpeter. Cobb’s daughter, Allison, was principle clarinet in her high school, played four years varsity tennis (in the No. 1 spot) at William Jewell College, then earned her Ph.D. degree at the University of Kansas. His office includes a shelf of miniature soldiers, model battleships suspended from the ceiling, a sword, a couple of his copied J.M.W. Turner paintings, and various other artifacts. None of the Monet works he has copied are in his office, but they hang in three continents as well as in his home. Amateur Professor Historian Artist Musician Larry Cobb has made history come alive for countless students. Besides his classes, he contributes resources—more than $24,000 to the OCU Library Fund for more than 1,300 books and films on history, humanities, and the fine arts. No wonder he won the Sears Foundation Teaching Excellence Award in 1991 as OCU’s Outstanding Faculty. He epitomizes liberal arts education. Terry Phelps • tphelps@okcu.edu

Power for Life Devon Energy Fuels Dreams for OCU Scholars By Leslie Berger

The Devon Scholarship at Oklahoma City University means many things to Ronnie Faram, BS ’08. When he was a freshman, it meant a mentor and a friend from the Fourtune 500 company. As he neared graduation, it meant accountability. Now, as he fulfills his dream of working as a dentist, it means success. Faram was a member of the first class of OCU Devon Scholars, a group of five students selected from the Clara Luper Scholarship Program. Devon Energy continues to support five Clara Luper Scholars every year through the program, which pairs students with Devon administrators and staff, provides leadership development opportunities and connects scholars with internships at the company. “The program really added to my OCU experience,” Faram said. “My mentors built my confidence and encouraged me.” Faram also competed on OCU’s varsity rowing team while a student. He has started a general practice residency program with the Cherokee Nation at Hastings Hospital in Tahlequah. OCU business students and siblings Alejandra and Juan Campos are current Devon Scholars and both are excited about their opportunities through the program. Like Faram, they are quick to

credit the Clara Luper Scholarship Program for enhancing accessibility to OCU’s prestigious, private liberal arts education and the Devon Scholarship Program for connecting them with corporate mentors and potential employers. Alejandra, a business marketing senior, regularly visits with her mentor, who is a finance manager at Devon. “She has been essential to guiding me this year to what I want to do post graduation,” Alejandra said. “It’s helpful to have someone with a company as prestigious as Devon to answer my questions and give me advice about graduate school programs.” Alejandra said the opportunities provided by the Clara Luper Scholarship Program, including the Devon Scholars track, helped her choose to attend Oklahoma City University. “It was definitely the right decision,” she said. “I have been happy the whole time I’ve been here and I have had great opportunities that I do not think I would have gotten at either of the other two schools I considered.” A business administration freshman, Juan is happy to be following in his sister’s footsteps. He turned down a full scholarship to play soccer at another university in part because he saw how

beneficial the Clara Luper and Devon scholarships were for Alejandra. “I looked at a couple of other schools, but I decided to come here for a better experience,” he said. Juan’s Devon mentor is a geologist. He enjoys visiting his mentor at the office and hanging out with him outside the workplace. Last month, Juan and his mentor joined the Devon Scholars group at an Oklahoma City Thunder game. “One of the advantages is that you gain insight of a corporation that would be a good place to work,” Juan said. He said he is looking forward to an internship at Devon during his junior year. Alejandra has been a helpful big sister, guiding her brother through some of their best OCU experiences. “It was fun this year to relive my freshman year with my brother,” she said. Alejandra attended Stars 101 orientation with Juan and advised him to take classes with some of her favorite professors. “I’ve been really happy at OCU,” Juan said. Faram hopes to build support for alumni involvement in the Clara Luper and Devon scholarship programs. “These scholarships were huge in my life,” he said. “I want to give back.” Find out more about Oklahoma City University’s Devon Scholarship Program at www.okcu.edu/students/multicultural/devon.aspx.

athletics Triple Play: OCU Athletic Hall of Fame Adds Boone, Delgado, Watson Oklahoma City University inducted its latest Athletic Hall of Fame class Jan. 19 in the Great Hall of the Tom and Brenda McDaniel University Center. The 2012-13 class includes former soccer great Stephen Boone, 2001 NAIA baseball player of the year Mario Delgado and 2003 and 2004 NAIA Division I women’s basketball player of the year Kesha Watson. Boone served as goalkeeper on OCU’s inaugural soccer team in 1986. He notched 33 saves and allowed seven goals in helping the team go 9-6. OCU went 59-24-4 in Boone’s four years. He finished his career with 255 saves and 62 goals allowed in 552 shots faced. Boone set the bar high for OCU goalkeepers to come. His singleseason records of six goals allowed, 0.29 goals against average and 15 shutouts set in 1989 still stand. He set an NAIA single-season record with his 0.29 goals against average, but it has since been broken. Delgado earned 2001 national player of the year honors as well as 2000 and 2001 Sooner Athletic Conference player of the year recognition with OCU. The 6-foot, 220-pound slugger made his mark at the plate as well as on the mound. Delgado’s numbers added

up to a .453 average, 207 hits, 122 runs, 38 doubles, four triples, 37 homers, 166 RBIs, five steals, a 16-3 record, 2.75 ERA, seven complete games, three shutouts, 110 strikeouts and 131 innings pitched. Watson became national player of the year as well as SAC player of the year in 2003 and 2004 during a record-shattering career at OCU from 2001 to 2004. During her stint at OCU, Watson finished with 2,658 points, 675 assists, 433 steals, 968 field goals in 2,119 attempts, 238 3-pointers and 484 free throws made to establish marks in each of those categories. Lauren Gober broke Watson’s career 3-pointers record this season. Watson also set OCU women’s basketball single-season records for points (962), assists (179), steals (143), 3-pointers (106) and 3-point attempts (297). She pocketed a single-game record of 12 steals against Doane on Nov. 7, 2003, at Abe Lemons Arena. She led the Stars to the national championship game each year, winning the 2001 and 2002 national championships and posting national runner-up finishes in 2003 and 2004. Watson also led OCU to the SAC regular-season crown all four years and to three SAC Tournament titles.

Gridiron Great Gutowsky Gains Glory Former Oklahoma City University football standout Leroy “Ace” Gutowsky will be posthumously inducted into the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame on Aug. 5. Lt. Gov. Todd Lamb announced Gutowsky’s induction in January. “This year’s class is spectacular,” said Eddie Griffin, president of The Jim Thorpe Association and Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame. Gutowsky was a star fullback for the OCU Goldbugs, playing for the university during the late 1920s and early 1930s. He went on to play professionally for eight years with the Portsmouth Spartans, Detroit Lions and Brooklyn Dodgers. He set the NFL career rushing record in 1939 and held the Lions’ career and single-season rushing records until the 1960s.

Play Ball: Crabaugh Reaches 1,200 Career Wins The Stars gave Denney Crabaugh his 1,200th and 1,201st victories as OCU head coach by pummeling Baker 17-3 and rallying in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn a walk-off victory over Saint Mary 7-6 on March 3 at Jim Wade Stadium. Entering the season, Crabaugh ranked second— behind Woody Hunt of Cumberland—among active NAIA baseball coaches in wins. He ranks first in winning percentage for active baseball NAIA coaches. OCU had the most wins in college baseball since 1991, at 1,118 entering 2013. Crabaugh is an NAIA and Oklahoma Baseball Coaches Association hall of famer.

OCU’s national runners-up were Stephanie Geltmacher at 143 pounds, Brittney Roberts at 170 and Heather O’Connor at 191. SAC Tournament most valuable player Charlton Jones, a senior from Katy, Texas, powered the Stars with 21 points, nine rebounds, six assists and three steals. OCU captured its ninth SAC men’s basketball tournament championship. Troynell Adams and Terry Johnson were all-tournament choices, while Elhadji Wade became the tournament hustle award winner. OCU previously won the SAC Tournament crown in 1994, 1995, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2006 and 2008. The Stars earned a berth in the NAIA National Championship Tournament. publicly thank the many individuals and organizations that support this great university. This group of supporters is composed of friends, alumni, staff, faculty, corporations, foundations, churches and organizations that, together, enable OCU to continue to provide an excellent education in the United Methodist tradition.

thank you We thank you.

Oklahoma City University is delighted to introduce you to our donors, and we invite you to join us in honoring them for their generous support. They are individuals and organizations. Together our donors are making a significant impact; one that will carry forward for generations to come. Our staff has worked carefully to ensure that this list of donors who made cash gifts, pledges and pledge payments between January 1 and December 31, 2012, is as accurate as possible. If you should have questions regarding this donor information, please call the Office of Advancement at (405) 208-7000.

in memory J. William Conger

J. William “Bill” Conger passed away Jan. 1, 2013. He was born in Shreveport, La., on March 6, 1945. Bill, the son of George and Lil Conger, moved with his family to Bartlesville in the summer of 1961. There he met his high school sweetheart and his wife of 45 years, Sherry Martin. Together they raised three daughters—Christen, Jennifer and Erin. In 2003, he began a new era of his career at Oklahoma City University where he served as the university’s general counsel and as distinguished lecturer at the School of Law. He taught courses in trial practice, introduction to legal practice, civil procedure and complex litigation and coached national trial competition teams. In 2005, he was recognized as Professor of the Year by vote of the student body. He was a superb teacher, focusing not only on doctrine and theory, but also on how to be a powerful storyteller, how to analyze complex ethical dilemmas and how to deal with difficult personal challenges in the practice of law. He became the mentor-in-residence for hundreds of law students who sought his advice and counsel on matters important to their professional and personal lives. A proponent of work-life balance, he helped his students and colleagues on the faculty and staff of the university find balance and perspective in their daily lives. In the past year, Bill was the recipient of an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Oklahoma City University and was named General Counsel Emeritus. In recognition of his achievements, he also received the School of Law’s 2012 Marian P. Opala Lifetime Achievement in Law Award. In November, the Oklahoma City University School of Law announced plans to name the courtroom in the new law school downtown campus the J. William Conger Courtroom, where Bill’s legacy of distinguished service

to his profession and to his community “will inspire others for generations to come.” Bill graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1967 with a degree in history. He attended law school at Louisiana State University for one year and then transferred to the University of Oklahoma College of Law to complete his juris doctor in 1971. He practiced law for more than 35 years and served as a lawyer in many settings. He began his practice with Woods Corporation, an Oklahoma City-based company listed on the New York Stock Exchange, and served as general counsel. He later opened his own law office and worked as a solo practitioner in a general civil litigation practice. Then, with friends Larry Hartzog and Len Cason, Bill founded the Oklahoma City firm of Hartzog Conger & Cason, later becoming Hartzog Conger Cason & Neville with the addition of Drew Neville and other attorneys who joined the firm in 1999. He practiced primarily in the area of business litigation, and his clients’ interests took him all over the world. He tried cases at the International Tribunal at The Hague in the Netherlands and in state and federal courthouses throughout Oklahoma and across the country. He served as liaison counsel for companies in environmental superfund cases and represented the accounting firm KPMG in the complex litigation arising out of Penn Square Bank’s collapse. Bill was a member of the American Bar Association, Federal Bar Association, Oklahoma Bar Association and Oklahoma County Bar Association. He served as presi-

Jeni LeGon, the first black woman to be signed by a major Hollywood studio, died Dec. 7, 2012, at the age of 96. LeGon received an honorary doctorate of Performing Arts in American Dance from Oklahoma City University in 2002. LeGon was most famous for her tap dancing skills, but she also was a talented singer and actress, starring in more than 25 films in her lifetime. People magazine in 2005 described her as a pioneer of black Hollywood, who “battled frank racism, stereotype-constrained casting and on-set segregation to achieve memorable art and pave the way to put us where we are today.” Ligon was born in Chicago on Aug. 14, 1916, to Hector and Harriett Ligon (she later changed the

dent of the 15,000-member Oklahoma Bar Association in 2008 and served on its board of governors from 2003-09. During his tenure, he led the organization through a major renovation of the Oklahoma Bar Center. He was the recipient of the prestigious John E. Shipp Award for Ethics and received the President’s Award for Outstanding Service to the Oklahoma Bar Association in 2004. He also had served as an appointed member of the Access to Justice Commission since 2006. He served as president of the Oklahoma County Bar Association in 2000, and he was one of the founding members and a master emeritus of the William J. Holloway Jr. American Inn of Court. In recognition of his accomplishments as a trial lawyer, Bill was elected as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He also was an elected Oklahoma Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and was a member of the American Law Institute. He received the International Academy of Trial Lawyers commendation award. Bill’s memorial service was in OCU’s Bishop W. Angie Smith Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in Bill’s honor be made to the Oklahoma City University School of Law Building Project for the J. LeGon performed in neighborhood bands and musical groups from a young age, and when she was 13 she successfully auditioned for the role of a chorus line dancer with the Count Basie Orchestra. LeGon later toured with the vaudeville dance troupe The Whitman Sisters—an all-black, female-run company—and then went to Hollywood. LeGon made her screen debut in 1935’s “Hooray for Love,” where she played alongside Bill “Bojangles” Robinson and Fats Waller. This led to her contract with MGM. LeGon starred in approximately 20 films. She also appeared on Broadway and television.

in memory Ken Trickey

Former Oklahoma City University men’s basketball coach Ken Trickey died Dec. 4, 2012, at the age of 79. Trickey served as OCU coach from 1979-81, leading the Chiefs to the 1981 Midwestern City Conference Tournament championship. Trickey’s career had stops at Middle Tennessee State, Oral Roberts, Iowa State and OCU. His four-year college record stood at 299-240 in 18 years. Trickey favored a highscoring, run-and-gun approach to basketball. Trickey’s OCU teams averaged 83.3 points a game and surpassed 100 points nine times while other teams were typically scoring in the low 70s. OCU won its first basketball conference tournament championship, beating Xavier 82-76 for the Midwestern City Conference Tournament title March 8, 1981, at the Riverfront Coliseum in Cincinnati. A native of Cairo, Ill., Trickey scored 1,465 career points during his playing career at Middle Tennessee State. He became a four-time all-conference performer.

Alexandra Alaupovic Alexandra Alaupovic, internationally known artist and professor, died Jan. 2, 2013. She was born Dec. 21, 1921, in Podravska Slatina, Croatia, to Elizabeta and Joseph Vrbanic, who both had a strong influence on her artistic career. Alexandra taught sculpture art at Oklahoma City University. She created her first sculpture at age five and took art classes from then on, eventually studying at the Academy of Visual Arts in Zagreb from 1944-48. In 1947 she married Peter Alaupovic, who would later become a distinguished biochemist. Together they moved to Prague, Czechoslovakia, where Alexandra continued her studies at the Academy of Visual Arts. They returned to Zagreb, where in 1949 their only child, Betsy, was born. In 1958, along with her husband and daughter, Alexandra immigrated to the United States, settling in Champaign-Urbana, Ill., where she studied photography and commercial art at the University of Illinois Art School. In 1960 the family moved to Oklahoma City so Peter could take a position at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation. Alexandra enrolled in the graduate program at the University of Oklahoma, earning an MFA degree in 1966. She became an American citizen in 1964. Alexandra has lived and worked in Oklahoma City exhibiting on a local, national and international level. Her work is contained in many public and private collections throughout the world, including in OCU’s Norick Art Center permanent collection. Though recognized for the variety of materials and techniques used in her sculpture, Alexandra is best known for her bronzes, which range from realistic portrait heads to abstract works. Her biography is included in “Contemporary American Women Sculptors,” North American Women Artists of the 20th Century, and Who ’s Who in America. Alexandra also was dedicated to sharing her talents by teaching for more than 20 years and encouraging young artists. In addition to her artistic career, Alexandra (known to friends as Sandra) enjoyed gourmet cooking, entertaining, gardening, attending art gallery and museum events, operas, traveling, and spending time with her family and friends.

in memory Ray Ackerman Ray Ackerman died Oct. 17, 2012. He was born in Pittsburgh, Penn., on Aug. 7, 1922, and moved to Oklahoma City in 1947 after five years in the U.S. Navy, including duty as a fighter pilot. Following five years as an advertising salesman with The Daily Oklahoman, while earning a degree at night at Oklahoma City University, he joined a staff of four at the George W. Knox Advertising Agency, now Ackerman McQueen. For more than 20 years, Ray served on the board of trustees of OCU and was honored with the university’s School of Business Outstanding Award in 1964, as a Distinguished Alumnus in 1991, and with an honorary doctorate in commercial science in 1996. Ray married Lucille Frances Flanagan in 1948, and they had six living children, 11 grandchildren, and one great-grandson. In 1954, he bought the agency from Knox, and in the early 1970s he was joined by the father-and-son team of Marvin and Angus McQueen. The agency grew, handling local and major accounts such as the National Rifle Association, Daisy Air Rifles, Nocona Boots, Resistol Hats, Food and Wines of France, Droste Chocolates, Pizza Hut and Sheraton Hotels.

Ray retired from active leadership and became chairman emeritus of the agency in 1992. He was president of the OKC Ad Club in 1954, and received its Distinguished Service Award in 1964. He was honored with the American Advertising Federation Silver Medal Award in 1982. He served as president of the Southwest Council of The American Association of Advertising Agencies as a member of the board of directors and its committee on government relations. In 1974-75, he served as international president of Worldwide Partners. In 2008, he was one of the inaugural class of eight elected to the AAF’s Southwest Advertising Hall of Fame. After active duty in the Navy, he spent 30 more years in the Naval Reserve, rising to the rank of Rear Admiral. He commanded both a jet fighter squadron and the Air Wing staff at Dallas Naval Air Station. He served as state president and national director of the Navy League and as national president from 1969-71, of the Naval Reserve Association. In 2007, he was awarded the George Washington Medal from the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge and was inducted into the Oklahoma Military Hall of Fame. Ray had a long history of public service in Oklahoma City, having served as general chairman, president, or a board member of many organizations. He was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 1993 and into

the Oklahoma Commerce and Industry Hall of Honor in 1998. He has been honored with many lifetime achievement awards, and in 2003 was selected as a “Father of the Year” by the OKC American Diabetes Association. In 2004, Ray and his wife, Lou, were selected by the Oklahoma Health Center Foundation as Oklahoma “Living Treasures for Tomorrow.” In 1993, the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber established the Ray Ackerman Award and in 2004, the United Way of Central Oklahoma established the Ray Ackerman Leadership Award. The Governor’s Art Award was presented to Ray in 2000, primarily for his role as the co-visionary of the world’s longest sculpture of the Run of 1889. In 1964, Ray wrote “Tomorrow Belongs to Oklahoma,” a review of the state’s past and future. In 2003, the Oklahoma Heritage Association published his biography, “Old Man River.” The title was given to him by the city chamber for his development of the North Canadian River and the Bricktown canal, two of the nine venues in the chamber’s “Vision of a New Frontier.” This plan was renamed MAPS by Oklahoma City’s mayor, and in 1993, voters passed a five-year onecent sales tax to fund it. After an 11-year effort led by Ackerman, the state legislature renamed seven miles of the river through the city as the Oklahoma River, signed into law by the governor on May 21, 2004.

Connie Mack McCoy Connie Mack McCoy died Dec. 18, 2012, due to complications following surgery. He was 73. Connie Mack was born to Clementine Croisant McCoy and Carol “Mac” McCoy in Lyons, Kan., in 1939, but spent most of his life in Oklahoma City. Prior to his move to Oklahoma, he grew up in western Kansas where he and his friends had the run of the fields around the Cities Service Gas Pipeline Plant where his dad was supervisor. The family moved to Wichita, Kan., where he graduated from Wichita High School East. He attended the University of Kansas and graduated from Oklahoma City University, where he received a B.S. degree in business and an M.A. degree in teaching. He received his Ph.D. degree in education from the University of Oklahoma. 52

focus spring 2013

His professional career included stints at Delta Sigma Pi business fraternity, ELS International in Los Angeles, First Enterprise Bank and NewView Oklahoma. Connie Mack’s name was synonymous with Oklahoma City University in the 1960s and 1970s and then the Oklahoma City Zoo from the mid 1980s until the early 2000s, where he was the chief operating officer and then served as the acting zoo director. During his tenure at the zoo he especially enjoyed helping acquire and place many of the animal sculptures. He had many funny stories to tell about getting the gorilla sculptures finished and delivered to the zoo. Many of the students, faculty, and staff of the two institutions where he spent most of his career became his closest friends and family. While walking across the OCU campus in 1961, he met Carolyn Corbin. He and Carolyn married in 1965. Together they spent the next 46-plus years raising a family and traveling the world.

the garden [ [

By Sarah Marsh

FOCUS extra

Peppers are ready to harvest in the OCU Community Garden. Marsh said, “Just like our ancestors we cultivated and harvested the food that powered our bodies. Here with the dirt, sun, and sky surrounding us we remembered what it felt like to be human.”

Following is an excerpt of business freshman Sarah Marsh’s essay “The Garden.” Marsh wrote the essay, detailing her experiences in Sustainability and the Environment: The OCU Garden Experience, for her English composition course last fall.

The OCU garden has become a part of me as well I a part of it. The garden does what it is supposed to do: it grows. No amount of any force can tame its madness. The garden remains resilient among man’s pruning and resistant against the unpredictable frost. It lives and breathes wildly because that is all it knows to do. Embracing life through every flower, bud, stem, and root it grows, it reminds the world that life is powerful and precious. It shows us that life is good and even amongst turmoil life is capable of bringing something unexpected. All my life I have tried to control my outcome, plan my future. However life is supposed to be wild and unpredictable. By fearfully following a strict plan of the picturesque life one prohibits itself from a million other possibilities. In order for me to be happy I must not fear myself and allow myself to grow, to change. I must open the gate of my own cage and release myself into a world where I can soar beyond the stars and find prosperity beyond the galaxy.
