and plan to continue increasing our enrollment numbers to assist in addressing the workforce shortage in our state.
As the Dean of the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry, it is my privilege to share with the Oklahoma Dental Association some of the exciting developments taking place at the college. The OU College of Dentistry has a proud tradition of serving as a cornerstone for oral health education, research, and patient care in Oklahoma, with many of you serving as examples of the esteemed professionals our college produces. With new initiatives and expansions on the horizon, we are looking forward to our impact across the state and beyond.
The dental hygiene program is also expanding the number of locations, with new distant sites in Lawton, Enid, and Ada, ultimately resulting in a 52% increase in dental hygiene graduates. These distant sites will not only increase access to care in these areas but also allow students to train closer to their communities, fostering professionals committed to serving rural and underserved areas. These efforts, alongside the continued success of the Oklahoma City and Tulsa Comprehensive Care Clinics, aim to provide greater access to quality, affordable dental care while ensuring a strong pipeline of dental professionals to serve Oklahoma communities.
First, I’d like to acknowledge our efforts to address the workforce shortage in Oklahoma. I know this challenge is not new to the members of this Association. Here at the college, we have an outstanding dental hygiene program and have expanded the program to continue to meet the needs of Oklahomans, both members of the community and dentists who care for those communities. Since 2023, we have increased dental hygiene students enrolled by two students each year
The OU College of Dentistry Faculty Practice is undergoing some exciting changes, including a relocation and comprehensive renovation to create a state-of-the-art facility that will increase the number of patients treated and will reflect the highest standards of clinical care provided by our exemplary faculty. The new location is set to open in 2025 and will enhance the patient experience, provide our faculty practitioners with the latest tools and technology, and serve as a vital training ground for our students.
In our commitment to preparing the next generation of dental leaders, we are thrilled to announce two innovative dual-degree programs: the D.D.S./PhD Program and the D.D.S./MBA Program. The D.D.S./
PhD program is designed for those who aspire to combine clinical expertise with groundbreaking research, advancing the scientific foundation of dentistry. Meanwhile, the D.D.S./MBA program will equip future dentists with the business acumen needed to lead practices and innovate within the dental industry. These programs reflect our dedication to fostering diverse career pathways and ensuring our graduates are equipped to excel in a rapidly evolving profession.
We are pleased to announce the completion of the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry Strategic Plan. Our Strategic Planning Committee has worked tirelessly over the last few years to update our strategic plan to create one that addresses the mission, values, and goals of the college while outlining achievable means of accomplishing those goals. We have gathered feedback from students, faculty, staff, alumni, and patients to better inform these initiatives. We are confident that this plan will guide the college to increasing success and are eager to share the results of our efforts with you in the years to come.
Last July, we launched the state’s first Pediatric Dentistry Residency, welcoming our first three residents to a two-year program that will train them in the specialized care of children, with an emphasis on those with medical complexities and developmental conditions. As many of you know, the dental needs of Oklahoma children are significant, and this program aims to serve those great needs of our community.
This year, we welcome three more residents into this pioneer program. The new Pediatric Dentistry Specialty Clinic, based at the Oklahoma Children’s Hospital, are booked out into Summer 2025, further confirming the great need for this program. This clinic focuses on treating complex cases and serving the great oral health needs of the children of Oklahoma. It also aligns with the OU Health Sciences’ Strategic Plan to expand access to affordable oral health care, reduce
health disparities, and meet the health care workforce demands for the state.
The initiatives outlined here are just a glimpse into the innovative work at the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry. We are deeply committed to our mission of improving oral health through education, patient care, and research. As we look to the future, we are inspired by the opportunity to collaborate with the Oklahoma Dental Association and its members
to advance our shared goal of improving oral health across the state.

Proposed Bylaws Amendments
The Council on Bylaws, Policy, and Ethics submits the following amendments to the ODA bylaws for consideration by the House of Delegates on April 12, 2025.

2025 Oklahoma Mission of Mercy a Success
The 2025 Oklahoma Mission of Mercy (OkMOM) provided a remarkable two days of free dental care, bringing much-needed relief to underserved Oklahomans. Held February 7-8 at the Exchange Center at Expo Square in Tulsa, 1,079 patients were treated and received more than $1.49 million in dental services.
The annual event, which transforms a large venue into a fully operational dental clinic, saw 8,792 procedures performed, with an average treatment value of $1,381 per patient. The success of OkMOM 2025 was made possible through the dedication of 1,065 volunteers, including dentists, hygienists, assistants, medical professionals, and general volunteers.
“Oklahoma Mission of Mercy is a testament to the power of collaboration and compassion,” said Dr. Rieger Wood, Tulsa dentist, past ODA president, and 2025 OkMOM co-chair. “This event not only delivers critical dental care to those in need but also strengthens the fabric of our communities by restoring smiles, confidence, and overall health. It’s a reminder that when we come together as dental professionals, volunteers,
and neighbors, we can create lasting change.”
A key highlight of this year’s event was the early access program for U.S. veterans, which allowed veterans to receive priority treatment by preregistering and attending a screening the day before the event. 58 total veterans were treated at this year's OkMOM event.
Additionally, the need for services remained high, with 85% of patients reporting they had no dental insurance or benefits. Women made up 59% of those treated and men were 41% of the total.
“The most important thing we want attendees to know is that this event is open to everyone and that it is a judgment-free environment,” said Dr. Lindsay Smith, a Tulsa general dentist, past ODA president, and 2025 OkMOM co-chair. “We want to take care of patients’ most urgent oral health issues without anyone feeling shame or fear.”
Since OkMOM's inception in 2010, volunteer dental professionals at the event have treated more than 19,000 patients and provided over 116,000
procedures, totaling more than $16.5 million in donated dental services. The event continues to be a beacon of hope for individuals who face financial and geographic barriers to oral healthcare.
The 2025 event was made possible by generous funding from the Oklahoma State Legislature through an American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) grant, as well as support from sponsors including SunLife DentaQuest, Dental Depot, Express Dental Laboratory, Liberty Dental Plan, the Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust (TSET), and the Oklahoma Dental Hygienists Association. Additional assistance was provided by Henry Schein Dental Products, Hendrick Plumbing of Tulsa, Dentsply Sirona, Ultradent, Medical Waste Services, Superior Linen Service, the Eastern Oklahoma Dental Society, and the Northern Oklahoma Dental Society.

Edmond Dental & Implant Associates

Dr. Matt Holloman, a native of Edmond and alumnus of University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry, has been practicing for more than 17 years in his hometown.
In 2020, while practicing with another dentist who was nearing retirement, Dr. Holloman began to think about expansion of the office in order to hire an associate and accommodate more patients. However, after consulting with construction professionals, they determined expanding that building wouldn't be feasbile in its existing location.
The team was looking to refresh the space, not only with physical upgrades and decor updates, but also with new technology, room for storage, and more parking.
Dr. Holloman rebranded the pracice as Edmond Dental & Implant Associates, found the perfect new location just a few miles away and began the design work.
Dr. Holloman's brother-in-law Tim Scott is a local builder who owns T. Scott Construction. Tim had already built several dental offices, and he worked closely with Dr. Holloman, Henry Schein Dental Integrated Design Studio, and Bockus Payne
Architecture to capture all their ideas and bring them to life.
Dr. Holloman's twin brother, who is also a dentist, had recently renovated his office in Florida and presented additional thoughts for consideration.
"More storage. You always need more than you think," was the best advice.
"And the windows. When we told patients we were moving, the main thing they said was, 'Don't lose the windows,' and we made sure there was plenty of natural light and landscaping that will mature nicely," said Dr. Holloman.

Pitzer's Lawn Management did the outdoor landscaping at the new site and Amber McCullough Design did the interiors.
Construction began on their new state-of-the-art facility near Covell and Boulevard in early 2023. The new building was completed later that year, and the practice officially moved to its new location in December 2023.
This move was part of their commitment to continually evolve with cutting-edge technology and research and to add team members.
"Eventually, I would like to do only surgery. The practice is sort of growing in that way," said Dr. Holloman.
Today, patients can enjoy the benefits of this modern facility, which features ergonomic chairs, noise-canceling headphones, private consultation rooms, and a coffee and drink bar in the lobby.

AEGD Program Referral: Hybrid Prosthesis
This case series presents two patients that were referred to the AEGD program at the OU College of Dentistry presenting with complete maxillary edentulism and mandibular reconstruction. One patient’s condition resulted from osteomyelitis, while the other patient was due to cancer of the floor of the mouth.
Patient #1 is a 57-year-old female referred to the AEGD program from the Oral Surgery department. She presents with a mandibular reconstruction plate, bone graft, and bilateral nasolabial flaps following osteomyelitis of the mandibular jaw (Figure A). No other health conditions were reported.
The patient expressed interest in restoring her smile and regaining the ability to eat and function normally. Due to the grafted site, implants could not be placed in the anterior region, resulting in a wide anterior-posterior (AP) spread between the implants. The treatment plan was developed in collaboration with the Oral Surgery department. Due to the soft tissue defect in the mandible a hybrid prosthesis was the only option to restore.
Implant placement was performed in the Oral Surgery department under IV sedation. A printed guide was used to place four Astra implants in the posterior region, avoiding the grafted site. The fixed-hybrid prosthesis was completed in the AEGD clinic on the same day as the implant placement, and a smart denture conversion was used to modify the mandibular denture (Figure B).

The patient was extremely satisfied with the prosthesis (Figure C). She was advised to stick to a soft food diet and to allow six months for the osseointegration of the implants before transitioning to the final prosthesis.

AEGD Program Referral: Implant Surgery
Patient #2 is a 61-year-old male who was referred to the AEGD program at the OU College of Dentistry from the Stevenson Cancer Center for restorative care. He presented with mandibular soft tissue skin grafting on the right side following cancer treatment surgery of the floor of the mouth. The patient’s primary concern was regaining his teeth and restoring functionality. He previously wore a maxillary complete denture and a mandibular partial denture (Figure 1 – mandibular edentulous; Figure 2 – maxillary edentulous). The patient also reported a history of smoking half a pack of cigarettes daily for the past 40 years.
The patient was referred to the Graduate Periodontics and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) departments for vestibule augmentation in the area of the skin graft which was limiting a removable prosthesis from fitting. However, it was determined that no manipulation of the flap could be attempted due to position of the facial artery, and the patient was referred back to the AEGD clinic. In the AEGD clinic, it was decided to place two implants on the left side to retain an overdenture prosthesis. During the implant surgery, it was determined that an additional implant should be added. A flap was created and reflected, with minimal bone reduction performed in the anterior region. No surgical guide was used for implant placement.
The following implants were placed:
• #20: Astra Prime Taper, size 4.8 x 8mm, with a healing cap
• #24: Astra Prime Taper, size 4.2 x 11mm, with a cover screw
• #26: Astra Prime Taper, size 3.6 x 11mm, with a healing cap (Figure 3)
The tissue was approximated using Vicryl sutures (Figure 4)

The patient's implant surgery was successful, and post-operative instructions were provided. The patient was scheduled to return to the AEGD clinic for a follow-up appointment two weeks after the surgery.
Although the two cases shared many similarities, the approach for each patient was distinct.
In conclusion, treatment planning for both cases presented challenges. With the presence of grafted sites and the objective of restoring a new smile, the planning process required thoughtful consideration and time to ensure the grafted areas remained undisturbed.

Did you know you don’t have to pay your ODA/ADA/Component (Tripartite) dues all at once?
ODA understands that it may work better for you to remit your membership dues over multiple payments instead of all at once. We are excited to provide you with the opportunity to pay your 2025 membership with one of the following convenient payment plans:
• 2 monthly payments
• 4 monthly payments
• 6 monthly payments
• 12 monthly payments
Sign up for Automatic Renewal
This plan allows your membership to be renewed automatically and paid with your credit card or an ACH payment each year. You may choose a one-time payment or a 6-month or 12-month payment plan that the ODA will process at the beginning of each year until you cancel by contacting the ODA. You will be able to update your credit card information as needed.
The ODA will process auto renew payments on the 15th of each month.
Please note: Those on the auto renew plan will be charged the same amount they contributed the previous year, including any additional voluntary contributions. ODA also reserves the right to charge the credit card on file at any time for past due payments that did not go through on prior attempts. To cancel, change, or update automatic renewal preferences, please contact the ODA.
