Okeechobee Christian Academy is organizing the annual Easter basket give away for children less fortunate in our community. Seacoast National Bank has generously donated 100 baskets for us to fill. We are collecting items such as grass, snacks, candy, small toys, stuffed animals, coloring books, crayons, bubbles, cellophane bags to wrap up the baskets, etc. The student body will assemble the baskets and then they will be distributed by Communities in Schools. The number of baskets that can be assembled depends on the amount of donations received. Last year we were able to distribute over 100 baskets! he warmest winter in recent memory may turn into the shortest season in recent memory. In just a three-week span the ramps around the lake have gone from being packed to looking like a ghost town. The Bass Master Elite Series that starts this week out of Scott Driver will surely increase traffic, but after that, things look as if they are starting to wind down.

We are just days away from the appearance of shell cracker moving into the shallow marsh areas preparing to spawn, and the blue gill will be soon to follow. Some anglers that are fishing the deep edges of the canals are picking up good numbers of fish using red worms, small jigs or grass shrimp. The bait needs to be relatively close to the bottom to get eaten, but if you are patient and hunt around it is possible to find a school of fish holding in a small area waiting for the right time to move up shallow. The local canals, Kissimmee River and the marsh areas along the north shore are good areas to start your hunt for the mother lode of pan fish.
