Better Hearing Month Spotlights the Importance of Hearing Health

Chicago, IL –- In 1927, the month of May was declared Better Hearing Month to bring attention to the causes and treatments of hearing impairments. And, on May 21, 1986, President Ronald Reagan made it “official” by issuing a formal proclamation designating May as Better Hearing Month to “heighten public awareness” of hearing disorders. Lake Okeechobee Fishing Report

Blue gill fishing will be on the forefront this week as the new moon phase approaches. Blue gill and shell cracker will again move toward the shallow flat areas in the lake and toward the banks in local canals. Most of the shell cracker have already spawned, but there will still be some caught in the same areas as blue gill. Grass shrimp, crickets and red worms are the primary baits for pan fish. In most situations grass shrimp will outperform the other two baits. There are times, however, when crickets and red worms will provide more bites. If it is possible, have some of each bait on hand and try all three to see which one gets bit more frequently. Bass fishing is still as good as it can be. Many fish, especially the big bass, are in extremely skinny water where access by a fishermen can be an issue. Shiners are still working well for bigger bass, but artificials will out-fish them for sheer numbers every day. Skinny dippers, trixie sharks, magic shad, top-water, speed worms and sen-

kos are all drawing strikes. The bigger bites are coming from anglers flipping or pitching a creature bait around clumps of vegetation in the shallow water. The lake level is approaching 11 feet, a level that precludes many anglers from accessing it. We have seen numerous boaters get stuck in the shallows. If you are unfamiliar with the lake, caution should be used if you consider fishing the main lake. Pray for rain!
