Anglers in airboats and skinny water type boats are finding large blue gill in very skinny water. There will be some shell cracker mixed in the catch, but overall they are done spawning for the most part. Grass shrimp and crickets and red worms are the key baits. Many anglers are tight-lining their baits, putting them on the bottom right in the nose of the fish. Other anglers prefer using a small bobber or cork that indicates when a fish has picked up their bait. Blue gill will usually pull the bobber aggressively, while shell cracker will sometimes suck the bait in and just sit there or move away very slowly; watching for the slightest movement of your cork is critical.

Bass fishing has been as good as you can ask for. The Kissimmee River and the outer edges of the grass lines where you can get to them are holding a lot of fish. As long as there is food and cover in an area, the fish will stay there. This time of year the bass’ metabolism is running on overdrive, and they are feeding almost constantly. Lipless crankbaits, top water, flukes, skinny dippers, senkos and worms of all types are drawing strikes and lots of them. Get out and have fun!
