ecent rains have slowed the decline in the lake level. Hopefully it is a sign that we are going to get plenty of rain this summer. The lake is more than a foot higher than it was at this time last year and is holding at this level as opposed to going down as it was last year. Bass fishing is still very good on this end of the lake. From Taylor Creek all the way to Harney Pond anglers are finding large numbers of bass that are willing to bite. During the very early morning hours, bass can be found chasing and eating shad in and along the grass lines. Lipless crank baits, spinner baits, speed worms, skinny dippers, big e-z’s and flukes will all get your line stretched. Anglers that are catching bigger bass are using a slower approach by flipping or pitching a jig around and into reed clumps or matted vegetation. Some of the bass are well out into the lake holding in areas where submerging vegetation is just starting to grow. There are areas with eel grass, pepper grass and hydrilla that are still under wa-

ter where fish are cruising around eating small shad, shiners and blue gill.

Blue gill can be found on or near beds well out into the lake. Grass shrimp, crickets and red worms are the baits of choice. The mouth of the Kissimmee River is holding good numbers of large blue gill around the grass and hydrilla lines. Around the full or new moon phase look for pan fish to be bedding in very shallow water.
