ere we are in late September and the weather and the water are both hot. This week we found water temperatures in the lake from 85 to 88 degrees. Our catch rates have fallen off in the last couple of weeks unless we happen to get into schooling fish. The bass are still schooling in numerous areas around the lake; the north shore area and the around Tin House Cove. Uncle Joes on the west side of the lake is holding good numbers of fish as well as the Rim Canal that lines the west side of the lake. Some days there is water running from outside the dike into the lake and schoolies can be found in those areas. We fished out of Harney Pond a couple of days and found the water hyacinths making a mess out of running from Harney Pond to the lake. One day there is an open trail to run through and the next day the wind has pushed a mass of hyacinth over the trail making it tricky to run. The Harney Pond dredging project has started and there are white PVC pipes clearly marking the area that will be dredged. If you are operating in that area be very careful operating your boat as the dredging equipment will more than likely be somewhat blocking the canal. There is very poorly
Digital X-Ray & Consultation or Second Opinion (09310, 00330)
oxygenated red water in the Harney Pond area making for a very sketchy bite, and depending on the wind direction it is being moved around day to day. There is just enough water around the grass lines that the fish are moving into the grass. In some areas you can get to them easily, but in other areas the shallow water makes approaching fish quietly very difficult. The water is very clear and the fish cannot only see you easily, but can hear your trolling motor churning the water as you approach. Concerned anglers, business persons and caring citizens have formed a group called Friends Of Lake Okeechobee. There have been two meetings held by the group so far and both have been well-attended. The goal of the group is to form a plan of action to help with the troubles Lake Okeechobee is facing both now and in the future. The meetings have been attended by hotel owners, fishing guides, county officials, members of the Audubon Society and employees of SFWMD that love the lake as we all do.
