Nas Woodstock: peace, love and lots of yoga

C

rystal “Nas” Wherry says she has been practicing yoga since she was a kid and she didn’t even know it.

“From the time I was in eighth grade, I would stretch every night, but I didn’t know it was called yoga,” Wherry said.

“It just felt good to me, and it always made me feel calm.”

Flash forward a few years to her college days in Atlanta, and someone told her that what she was doing looks like yoga.

“You mean that’s a thing?” she asked.

In fact, it’s the raison d’être for Nas’ Woodstock Yoga House, 3515 N. Classen Blvd. Wherry opened the studio in December. Already, it’s drawing clients from CH-EH, Mesta Park, Putnam Heights and even Cleveland UCD. An Oklahoma native who moved back after college, Wherry was here about a year when she saw the need for a new yoga studio in Oklahoma City.

She said she has been told it’s likely the first yoga studio in town to be run by an African-American.

“Yoga is a practice in the West that’s pretty much been dominated by white females,” Wherry said. “That was why it was important to open up this space, to add some diversity to the yoga community here.”

The Classen Boulevard location — convenient and with plenty of parking — is important as well. Lack of parking will stop even the most determined yoga student.

“Who wants to be stressed going to yoga?” Wherry said.

Nas’ Woodstock Yoga House offers classes in both hatha and vinyasa yoga, both static and flow. The environment is secular and not overtly Eastern in appearance.

“You don’t have to become a Hindu or part of a whole other culture in order to practice yoga,” Wherry said.

Wherry picked up the name Nas — it’s short for nysuttet and means “one who leads” — from some of her holisticpractice teachers in Atlanta.

“It’s simpler for people, you know, like the rapper,” she said.

Why is Woodstock in the name?

“I wanted to give [the studio] a name that was very memorable to most Americans, a time that has stood out in our culture,” Wherry said. “Plus, if I could go back in time, that’s the time I would have chosen to be born in.”

The peace-andlove vibe carries right down to a children’s yoga class dubbed Little Hippies.

Most students are new or relatively inexperienced, perhaps having practiced a little yoga at home with a video. Most are drawn to yoga to increase their flexibility. They stay when they discover it calms their minds as well.

President’s report

I

t was so good to see all the CH-EH neighbors at the annual meeting reception in January. A big thank you to Janna and Steve Cole for opening their home to us again this year.

Among other neighborhood business, we discussed the Oklahoma City Community Foundation (OCCF) fund, which is growing nicely toward our $500,000 goal. Kathy McCraw, who heads this task for our board, reported $15,000 interest earned through that fund this past year. Going forward, she will be working with OCCF to pursue further fundraising for our neighborhood.

We also discussed our other fundraising effort in the neighborhood, the Annual Heights Party. Committee chair Bronda Williams and other committee members have been meeting to plan this fundraiser since the start of the new year. Dr. Chambers and Dr. Toal have graciously agreed to open their home again this year for the event. Look for invitations and email blasts soon announcing the date and details!

Both of these fundraising efforts help or will help support our landscaping efforts in the park as well as maintain medians and lighting throughout the neighborhood.

They also enable us to have the great Fourth of July and Octoberfest gatherings, just to name a few. Your participation individually in both supporting the OCCF fund and the annual fundraiser goes a long way in making our neighborhood one of the premier and sought-after neighborhoods in the city.

So if you are new to the neighborhood or have been here for many years, if you haven’t already, consider signing up to help with our annual fundraiser, donating to our neighborhood fund or helping with any of the other events we hold throughout the year. CH-EH board members would love to hear from you and connect you with people and activities with which you would like to participate.

Uptown Uncorked to benefit NW 23rd district

J

oin supporters and friends of Uptown 23rd District for its annual fundraiser, Uptown Uncorked, March 29 at Tower Theatre, 425 NW 23rd St. Uptown 23rd District Association was formed in 2012 for the express purpose of revitalizing NW 23rd Street from Broadway to Pennsylvania avenues. In this short period of time, so many good things have come to pass!

During the past six years, the association has engaged business owners and neighbors to brand the district with a distinctive logo and signs throughout the corridor. There was a renovation of the medians, with landscaping and bike racks to follow.

Forward-thinking developers like Johnathan Russell took interest in the area. His award-winning renovation of The Rise building now houses Uptown favorites like The Drake Seafood and Oysterette, Art Hall gallery, Urban Teahouse, Anytime Fitness and other important neighborhood services.

Just down the street, another group of devoted professionals from Pivot Project were hard at work bringing an almost 80-year-old movie theater back to life. Today, Tower Theatre is a multi-faceted venue that features live music, comedy shows, classic movies and special events for a diverse group of Oklahoma City organizations.

Of course, Uptown wouldn’t be Uptown without signature restaurants from A Good Egg Dining Group,

headquartered just off 23rd Street.

Celebrating with a meal at Cheever’s Cafe is a tradition for many. Big Truck Tacos was another early adopter in Uptown. Its iconic location across from Mesta Plaza complements the newer additions of Pizzeria Gusto and Back Door Barbecue. Any visitor to OKC would be remiss not to stop at The Pump Bar for a drink on the patio. Locals catch the game at Guyutes, of course.

Volunteer group matches drivers with seniors

H

ow many times do you hop in the car to run an errand or go for an appointment? In Oklahoma City, driving is just part of our daily routine, but imagine if you could no longer drive yourself anymore. No one wants to feel dependent on family to go about their daily lifestyle.

That’s where ITNCO (Independent Transportation Network of Central Oklahoma) comes in. ITNCO provides a safe and customer-friendly ridesharing service driven by volunteers, including two CH-EH neighbors, Marcy Price and Dorothy Thadani. Want to be part of that driving force?

As a volunteer driver for ITNCO, you become a lifeline to the people and places that keep seniors and visually impaired adults active, independent and happy. As a volunteer, you provide safety for all of us, freedom for nondriving seniors and peace of mind

Jonque Mode: Airstream to Paseo

den Turrentine is no stranger to the Paseo Arts District. Having lived in CH-EH with her husband, Monte, she immediately loved all the personality and charm found in the heart of Oklahoma City.

So when the opportunity to open her own fashion boutique in the Paseo was presented to her, she knew it was going to be a great fit. Eden has spent years working in the fashion industry, from local boutiques to traveling with her Airstream trailer to personal styling.

And now Eden is excited to bring her experience to her new store, Jonque Mode, in The Paseo Arts District.

Jonque Mode opened Nov. 1 and offers an affordable alternative to luxury or curated items.

“I feel like all my experience in higherend retail helped me develop an eye and helped me source and find products

that have higher inherent value from a fashion perspective but doesn’t break the bank,” Turrentine said.

Customers of Jonque Mode come from a wide age range. One moment, Turrentine might be helping a 20-yearold, and the next she will be working with a 65-year-old. That’s because she makes a conscious decision to buy items that will please people of different generations with different tastes.

Turrentine’s experience in fashion started in makeup and beauty at the Balliets cosmetic counter. Spending almost 10 years at Balliets allowed her to work with major brands such as Trish McEvoy, Laura Mercier and Darphin.

Next, Turrentine went on to work at Allton’s, a store in Edmond where she truly fell in love with fashion. She then moved on to work for Allyson’s Closet and Liberté as buyer-manager before opening

For several years, David R. Lopez Community School at Edgemere Elementary has received indirect support from the CH-EH Neighborhood Association, primarily by allowing Friends of Edgemere School to sell tickets to our annual Heights Benefit Party. This school year, that help is also coming in a more direct manner, with longtime CH-EH resident Paula Hearn donating her time to tutor at the school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Not only that, she convinced her friend and former City of OKC coworker Joanne Pearce to

After two years, Jonque Mode transitioned from the Airstream to a sublet space inside Betsy King, A Shoe Boutique in the Paseo. This led to an increase in sales and eventually the decision to open her own space. Turrentine had spent enough time in the Paseo to know that if she were ever to open her own store front, it’s the perfect location.

Both Paula and Joanne are providing much-needed assistance to Ms. Kathy Clear, who was tasked with teaching both fifth and sixth grades after the school lost a teacher in the crippling OKC Public School’s budget cuts.

“Some of these children have fallen behind, and their teacher is in desperate need of tutors to help them catch up,” Paula said.

Paula is tutoring primarily math, while Joanne tutors English. Paula had previously tutored students at KIPP Reach College Preparatory charter school, and her friend Joanne had previously tutored at Putnam City Schools. Paula switched to Edgemere after realizing the need for help at public schools was not just across town; it is only blocks away.

Curbside Chronicle: help for the homeless

S

teven walks down the street in his green smock, selling magazines.

Instead of shouting, “Extra! Extra! Read all about it!” the modern-day newsboy carries a sign that says, “Hand Up, Not a Hand Out.” Before becoming a vendor for The Curbside Chronicle, Steven was homeless. He lived without a roof over his head for 13 years.

Now a successful salesman, Steven has a home of his own. He used the money he earned from magazine sales to get it. He’s also working toward his future career goals.

On any given night in Oklahoma City, there are 1,400 people who are homeless. For many who have struggled with homelessness for an extended period, traditional employment can be out of reach.

The Curbside Chronicle, a program of The Homeless Alliance, works to provide both a voice and low-barrier employment opportunities for people who are homeless.

The monthly magazine is in the genre of “street papers.” You might have seen street papers in other large cities like Chicago, Portland or London, but it is the only one of its kind in Oklahoma. While street papers are a new concept in the state, the industry has experienced significant growth globally, employing more than 10,000 people in poverty annually with 5.8 million readers worldwide.

The magazine itself is a glossy, fullcolor publication that features stories about a variety of topics including local restaurant reviews and events as well as articles about pop culture and real social issues facing Oklahoma City.

Every issue includes a vendor profile, allowing readers to get an in-depth look at the life of a person in Oklahoma City who is or was living without a home.

Physical or mental health barriers, challenges related to re-entry after incarceration, lack of education, transportation difficulty, access to showers and clean clothing, no address — all of these things can make it hard to obtain and maintain steady employment. For these folks, The

Curbside Chronicle tries to take away those barriers.

To get started, vendors must attend an orientation where they are taught the local laws, program rules and sales techniques. In addition to providing income, The Curbside Chronicle teaches vendors time and money management as well as the social and life skills needed to keep a job. Staff works with vendors to set individualized goals, typically beginning with housing. Lack of housing can be a barrier to employment, so once housed, staff works with vendors to transition into more traditional jobs. The Chronicle works with each vendor based on their individual needs to overcome barriers and achieve their housing and employment goals.

But providing this low-barrier employment is only part of the mission.

“There is a need for increased community dialogue and education concerning issues of homelessness and poverty,” said Ranya O’Connor, director of The Curbside Chronicle. “Progress for economic, social and racial justice cannot be achieved without the commitment of the community at large, and community support can only be garnered from greater understanding and empathy.”

The Curbside Chronicle is starting a dialogue on issues of poverty and pushing these topics to the forefront of conversation for its readers. In addition, it is also bridging the gap and normalizing interaction between people who are homeless and those who are not.

In addition to its initial product, The Curbside Chronicle has expanded to provide additional economic opportunities to people experiencing homelessness through its Wrap Up Homelessness holiday wrapping paper campaign and Valentine’s Day flower sales.

And the publication isn’t just making waves locally; The Curbside Chronicle has received international recognition. Its Wrap Up Homelessness campaign was featured by Billboard and Rolling Stone magazines for its psychedelic wrapping paper designed by Wayne Coyne.

In the three years the Chronicle has competed for awards from the International Network of Street Papers, it has received more nominations than any other street paper in the world.

Most recently, the Chronicle won in the Best Cultural Feature category for its article “No Seconds: Last Meals of Death Row Inmates” and the Best Vendor Contribution category for “The Art of Healing,” which features the story and photography of Chronicle vendor Chazzi Davis.

And to top it all off, O’Connor was featured as a Hometown Hero

by Glamour magazine. She and her husband Whitley started The Curbside Chronicle when they were in college.

Now in its fourth year, The Curbside Chronicle has expanded from only three vendors and 1,500 copies every two months to more than 200 vendors and 10,000 copies every month — and it’s growing.

Security update

T

his past month, two homes east of Walker Avenue were broken into at various times of the day and night. One invader came sometime after midnight.

The owner checked the area before retiring and found the area had been visited between midnight and 7 a.m., when she found the back door ajar and things disturbed. The latch on the back door also was pried off.

So it’s that time of year to do our winter check of the doors, windows and openings into our homes and garages.

Here are some checks you need to make and changes you might want to make.

1. Be aware that burglar alarm systems that are wired outside and lead to a telephone and answering system in Austin, Texas, can easily be defeated by cutting the incoming lines. Ask your burglar alarm company for a batteryoperated system that sounds off when the alarm system outside your home is cut.

2. Front and back doors should have two locks. One operates the door handle.

The other is a dead bolt lock set in the door above the handle. These can be opened with the same or different keys.

3. Front and back doors with glass windows should be operated at least on the dead bolt by a key. Do not leave the key in the lock so the window can be broken and someone can reach and turn the lock, entering the home.

4. Property guards tell us that a burglar is less likely to try a home that has a porch light lit on the front and back porches.

5. Do not hang the keys to your car and garage door on the sill by the back door. Your car might be gone with a single window broken and the

hefts and burglaries accounted for the majority of crimes committed within the boundary of the Crown Heights-Edgemere Heights Homeowners Association during the months of October, November and December, 2017.

Thefts constituted the five personal property crimes, with three involving items valued more than $200 and two involving items valued less than $500.

Six residential burglaries also occurred during the reporting period.

Half of these were accessed through the front entries of the homes.

Other incidents of note were a misdemeanor hit-and-run and the possession of 1 ounce or less of marijuana.

perpetrator reaching in. Find a place in the house where they can be stored.

6. Wooden up-down slide windows are easy to enter by simply breaking the top glass, reaching in and unlocking the window. A good method to defeat this entry is to place a small block of wood above the lower window and drilling a screw into the frame. A burglar will not take the time to figure this one out and reach in to remove the screw.

7. Door locks should be strong enough not to break with a screwdriver or chisel prying the door open. Use quality locks and materials that are guaranteed not to break with foot pressure on the door.

8. Do not leave garage door openers in plain sight in your entryway or kitchen.

Also, lock your garage entry doors.

9. Bars on the windows tell the burglar that you have something worth stealing.

They are also hard to get through from the inside if you need to get out because of smoke, fire or a gas leak.

10. If you belong to CH-EH Security, have them check your house, garage doors and gates for closure. We sometimes forget to do the simple closures.

11. Gates over driveways should either be electronically opened or closed or mechanically locked. Burglars feel really good if they can drive behind your house and not be seen from the street.

12. Tell your neighbor if you are going to be gone for an extended period. Also, tell them the name of anyone visiting your home and type of vehicle they drive.

Home sharing in the Heights?

There is a proposed ordinance at the City of Oklahoma City that could affect our neighborhood regarding home sharing (i.e. Airbnb) within historic preservation (HP) neighborhoods (and all neighborhoods in the city).

Once local officials became aware that home sharing is happening throughout the city, they became motivated to draft an ordinance specifically regulating it and gathering taxes from it. There is a significant amount of revenue that is not being collected by the city. The city council has already entered into an agreement with Airbnb to collect hotel/motel tax for all listings within the City of Oklahoma City. However, there are other companies and websites facilitating home sharing.

with the following stipulations: A. The rental of the entire home or bedroom(s) may not exceed 30 consecutive days per renter/guest.

B. If five or more bedrooms are being rented, then the owner/host shall be required to comply with any applicable building or fire codes adopted by the city.

C. The owner/ host must obtain a home-sharing license.

D. All applicable fees and taxes must be collected and paid.

Anyone who wishes to rent their home through this ordinance would be required to purchase a home sharing license through the city at a cost of $24 annually.

Additionally, if taxes are not gathered directly from the booking website, it is the responsibility of the homeowner/host to collect the appropriate tax and remit to the City of Oklahoma City.

We raised concerns about regulation, and it became clear that more discussions are necessary.

An official “study session” where residents and officials can brainstorm and discuss the ordinance is being planned for city council members and any interested members of the public. We will keep everyone posted when a date has been set for such a session. Please remember this is a process.

CH-EH Board annual meeting minutes Jan. 23, 2018 1. Call to Order 2017 annual meeting minutes approved.

2. President’s Report Thanks to the Coles for allowing us to use their home.

3. Treasurer’s Report Judy explained the two corporations. The Association keeps $25 of the annual dues for social activities, and the remainder goes to Improvement, Inc. to maintain lights, medians and edges of the park. We have a fund at the OCCF for future maintenance needs. Judy has called OGE about the median lighting.

4. Committee Reports a. The Chronicle Last year went well. The next delivery is at the end of February. Content for the May/June issue is due in late March. Amanda asks that content be submitted in early May for July/August. b. Landscaping Since 1987, the Neighborhood has had an agreement with OKC to maintain the medians and gateway. The agreement required OKC to pay for utilities. Last year, OKC decided not to pay for utilities, so the Neighborhood is doing so. We were required to pay for the installation of electricity meter. We have started putting the irrigation system on battery power. The Parks Department has spent a lot of time in the Park pruning trees and removing dead trees. The OU Big Event was a success, and we will participate again this April 14. Thanks to Renee Jenkins for planting the wildflowers in the Park. c. Security Join Security and support it. There have been several break-ins east of Walker. We discussed ongoing efforts to merge the Security Association with the Homeowners Association both to increase membership of the former and to assure greater participation. d. Communications/Facebook/Website The new website is up and running.

We aren’t the only neighborhood forced by OKC to pay for utilities. The effected neighborhoods have been gathering information including about money spent over the years. Pete White talked to the City Water Trust. The Trust gave OKC a budget, and OKC, in an attempt to meet budget, determined that neighborhoods must pay for water. The Trust is not going to relent so discussions have moved to perhaps getting a lower rate. Since June 2017, we’ve paid a bit over $3000. Citizens are encouraged to take their complaints to City Hall. b. Home sharing ordinance OKC wants to charge a hotel tax. If you have any issues, call OKC. c. Board Member election.

1/4 cup oil (canola, sunflower or grape seed) 1 onion, chopped 1 pound cubed beef (chuck or round) 3 carrots, sliced 1 stalk celery, sliced 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 6 teaspoons beef-style broth concentrate, mixed into 3 cups water* 1 can Guinness (or similar stout beer) 2 red or yellow potatoes, cubed 1/2 cup dehydrated oyster mushrooms (or 8 ounces fresh mushrooms, quartered) 1 teaspoon dehydrated minced garlic (or 4 to 8 fresh cloves, minced) 3 Turkish bay leaves (or 1 California bay leaf) 2 Tablespoons The Q Steak Rub* 1 to 2 tablespoons tomato powder (optional) salt and pepper to taste

*Recipe works with other coarse butcher’s rubs, like Hudson Bay Beef Spice, Great Plains Bison and Beef Rub, Pike’s Peak Butcher’s Rub, Summit County Seasoning or Mt. Evans Butcher’s Rub. You can substitute beef broth for any other broth of choice.

Directions

Heat oil over medium-high heat in a Dutch oven or large, high-sided saute pan. Add onions and cook until translucent, then push them to one side of the pan. Add beef and brown on all sides. Stir in carrots and celery and cook for 3 more minutes. (If using a smaller pan, cook onions, beef, and carrots/ celery in separate batches, then combine.)

Sprinkle with flour and cook until flour picks up all of the fat in the pan and starts to smell nutty, about 2 minutes. Add broth and Guinness to deglaze pan. Add potatoes, mushrooms, garlic, bay leaves and The Q Steak Rub. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes to an hour, or until beef is tender and stew is to the consistency of your liking. If it has trouble thickening, add 1 tablespoon tomato powder at a time (made into a paste by adding water) to help thicken the stew. Season with salt and pepper to taste before serving.
