Two challengers hope to unseat an OKC school board veteran in District 5. By Laura Eastes

Returning to the classroom as a substitute teacher was the spark that set off retired educator Willie T. Kelley’s run for school board. Kelley witnessed what he described as chaotic environments in which students ran the classrooms and the teachers felt they had to manage student behavior issues by themselves.

“Students have all the rights, and teachers have no rights,” Kelley said.

“Somehow, we’ve got to find a middle ground.”

Nichell Braddy-Garcia was motivated to seek a seat on the district’s eight-member board after her own frustrations related to district policies.

Braddy-Garcia, who is also the PTA president of Martin Luther King Elementary School, explained she and others have encountered situations where they believed district policies stood in the way of getting answers about activity and incidents in their children’s schools.

“It has made it hard for parents to get answers,” Braddy-Garcia said.

“Another concern I have is, Are our teachers happy? What are ways we can make them happy if we can’t increase pay?”

Both are now candidates for the District 5 seat on the Oklahoma City Public Schools Board of Education, challenging incumbent Ruth Veales.

The election is Feb. 13. If no candidate receives a majority of the votes, the two top vote-getters will compete in a runoff election April 3. Oklahoma school board 40 elections are nonpartisan.

also extend into southeast Oklahoma City, primarily the Shidler-Wheeler neighborhood, and into northern parts of Midwest City, where OKCPS’ Willow Brook and Telstar schools are located.

Veales was first elected to the state’s largest school board in 2010. She is one of the longest-serving board members alongside Ron Millican, the District 7 representative. During her time on the local board, Veales has represented the district as a member of the National School Boards Association’s Council of Urban Boards of Education.

Veales’ third-term quest is linked to her desire for equity throughout the district. Over the past 12 months, Veales has led efforts to create an equity policy.

Equity is key to providing the resources students need to be successful in school, she said.

“I truly believe this will 44 be one of the

tools that will change the trajectory of education in our schools for all students,” Veales said. “Through my leadership as the committee chair of The Student Experience and Equity Committee, we have been able to develop an equity policy, which was approved by the board on Nov. 13. Now, the work begins.”

Board changes

The District 5 election is the district’s only race this February. Mark Mann, a local insurance agent, was the only candidate to file to represent northwest Oklahoma City neighborhoods in District 4. Mann was appointed to the position last spring after former representative Paula Lewis was elected to serve as board chair.

Millican, who has represented south Oklahoma City since 2010, is not seeking a third term. Jace Kirk, an assistant 35director of FaithWorks of the Inner City, was the only candidate to file. Kirk will 44 participate in his first school board meeting, either special or regular, following the board’s Feb. 12 meeting.

During his time as a teacher, counselor and coach in OKCPS, Kelley witnessed many difficult social issues affecting his students. He recalled a time when a Rogers Middle School student who was living with a cousin explained he had to transfer to a new school after his cousin was arrested. He had no place to live, Kelley said.

“Until we get past those problems, education doesn’t mean much to those kids,” he said. “Those are the kinds of things you deal with in the urban city.

‘I am worried where I am going to sleep tonight, not history, math or science.’

We need to get our schools stabilized with social workers and psychologists.”

Kelley said that some students’ social and emotional challenges could result in behavioral issues. While teachers need more support for how to handle such issues, the district also needs to expand its options in alternative schools, he said.

As the only candidate who is a district parent, Braddy-Garcia said she would bring the perspective of someone “living all the conditions, both good and bad, in our district” to the board.

“The greatest issue we have facing our schools is the A-F grading system,” Braddy-Garcia said. “I don’t remember what it was originally deemed to do, but it highlights the fact that 42 of 78 schools in the district are struggling.”

Braddy-Garcia pointed out that 42 of the district’s schools received an “F” grade from the A-F grading system from the Oklahoma State Department of Education in 2016. Grades were not released in 2017, as the state is implementing a new plan for school accountability where the components of the grades are expanded. If elected, Braddy-Garcia would devote her time to supporting children, teachers, principals and support staff. She wants to ensure children are not deprived of the education they want.

Veales explained one of the district’s greatest challenges is addressing the needs of students. She is confident that with the passage of the equity policy, the district will begin to practice resource equity.

School improvement initiatives must also be initiated from outside the district’s office, Veales said.

“We need strong partnerships and we need a strong community to come and join in to help the district,” Veales said. “We need to make sure we get resources, and resources are not always money. It can be volunteering in the schools. It is a partnership, and we need everyone at the table in order to make sure our children have the opportunity to get an education.”

Voters in District 5 will have a chance to cast ballots 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Feb. 13.

A look into the school nurse shortage in Oklahoma. By Laura Eastes

About two years ago, when the state of Oklahoma declared a revenue failure, meaning a reduction to state agencies and ultimately fewer dollars for the state’s school districts, Oklahoma City Public School leaders faced grave challenges as they addressed a $30 million shortfall.

Ultimately, hundreds of staff — teachers, support staff and administrators — were relieved of their job duties before the start of the 2016-17 academic year. The district’s school nurses, who are registered nurses with a valid bachelor’s degree and two licenses — one from the Oklahoma State Board of Nurse Registration and Nursing Education and another from the Oklahoma State Department of Education — escaped mostly unscathed.

“I looked at the overall picture and thought, ‘We can’t cut services to kids,’” said Teri Bell, Oklahoma City Public Schools’ executive director of student support services. “So that’s what I chose to do.”

The district’s administrator of health services and the administrative assistant of health services were laid off as part of the district’s budget reductions; however, not one of the district’s 32 nursing positions was cut.

“We have to keep those services for our kids,” Bell said. “If you look at the state’s health data, we are one of the most unhealthy states.”

Indeed, Oklahoma faces unique challenges when it comes to children’s health.

The Sooner State ranks high in childhood obesity rates, according to The State of Obesity: Better Policies for a Healthy America. Overweight youth face increased risks of high blood pressure, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

ingly complex medical conditions.

Inside Oklahoma City schools are clinics where nurses provide significant medical interventions, everything from distributing medications to investigating students’ symptoms and offering health advice. Nurses are also tasked to write health plans for students with specialized needs, conduct hearing and vision screenings, provide health education and training to teachers and respond to life-threatening issues at a moment’s notice.

Teri Bell “They work as advocates, they work as counselors, they work as health educators, they work as liaisons between the school and the community and they work as clinicians,” said Barbara Smith, school health coordinator at the Oklahoma State Department of Health. “They have a multilevel job.

It is no longer sit back and wait for someone to come to the office who needs a Band-Aid.”

Nurse shortage

While the state’s largest school district has maintained its nursing positions, other school districts haven’t been so lucky, explained Elizabeth Vaughan, a registered nurse and president of the School Nurse Organization of Oklahoma.

“We are a dwindling group in Oklahoma right now,” said Vaughan, a registered nurse employed by Tulsa Public Schools for the past 19 years. “It’s been 10 years of not funding education very well, which has led some school districts to eliminate their school nurses.”

From the association’s perspective, school nurses are more common in larger districts. While some districts have a school nurse assigned to a school building, other districts adopt roving school nurse models, where the licensed nurse travels between buildings in the district. Some districts, often smaller and rural, have no licensed nurse on their staff, Vaughan said.

Vaughan, who serves between 40 and 70 students daily in her clinic at Hale High School, is troubled by the thought of schools cutting back the school nurse program or eliminating it altogether.

At the state Department of Health, Smith provides technical assistance to school nurses and staff in regard to health matters that might arise in schools. For schools without nurses, it falls on other staff to fill the role.

“According to education law, it is up to the administrator to delegate whatever care is needed to a school staff person if there is not a school nurse available,” Smith said. “Generally, most of the staff people who are assigned the tasks are trained by the parents to do the procedure.”

local public health provider to come in for a couple hours a week to take care of student health needs.

Oklahoma is not alone in its school nurse shortage. Strapped government budgets have led to a shortage of school nurses across the country. According to the National Association of School Nurses, a quarter of the nation’s schools are without school nurses. Meanwhile, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends at least one full-time registered nurse in every school.

The association’s tactic is supporting legislation that increases funding for education budgets and raises teacher pay. School nurses are on the teacher’s salary scale. Like teachers, nurses have long been asking lawmakers to find a way to fund a pay raise.

“When we fully fund education, there will be money to bring back nursing in the schools,” Vaughan said. “Would you like your student being taken care of by the secretary at the front office, by a person who might be uncomfortable with what they are being asked to do?

That’s what it comes down to.”

Legislative aide

Some public health officials argue that the shortage of school nurses is linked to the lack of legislation mandating school nurses in Oklahoma and other states.

Some states have already taken action. Under Minnesota law, districts with 1,000 students or more are required to employ at least one full-time licensed nurse. Massachusetts requires at least one nurse at each of its public schools. In Iowa, Indiana, Missouri and Georgia, schools are recommended to employee a school nurse for every 750 students, which is what the American Academy of Pediatrics supported prior to a policy revision in 2016.

increase the nation’s number of school nurses. Federal legislation, Nurses for Under-Resourced Schools Everywhere (Nurse) Act introduced by Democratic Sen. Jon Tester of Montana in 2016 calls for the Secretary of Education to award grants to schools that demonstrate a need for new or additional nursing services. The legislation has failed to gain momentum despite support from the National Association of School Nurses.

The role of a school nurse is evolving, explained Bell, who oversees OKCPS’ 32 nurses, some of which split their time among four school buildings. School nurses are increasingly playing a critical role in identifying students with mental health disorders and must coordinate with counselors on students’ emotional needs, she said.

“I’m doing more training with our nurses about being aware of trauma and what it does to our kids,” Bell said. “A child who comes to see you every time you are in the clinic for a Band Aid or for a headache, they just might need one-on-one with someone.”

Second shot

In OKC, the Center for Employment Opportunities is lowering recidivism statistics one parolee at a time. By Laura Eastes

When Korey Keaton was assigned GPS monitoring after being released from prison for drug possession, he knew he needed help finding a job. While he had come out of prison before and found jobs, keeping employment and staying out of trouble was another issue.

“I’ve been in and out of the system since the ’90s, and I really haven’t had any resources to fall back on for help,” the 41-year-old told Oklahoma Gazette.

“Now, I can go out there and get a job, but it’s getting harder.”

In December, when Keaton sat down with a parole officer, he asked about a program he heard about called CEO, or The Center for Employ ment Opportunities, a national program with 18 centers in six states, including Oklahoma. His parole officer made the referral to CEO, but it was up to Keaton to call the employment program for parolees or probationers. Motivated, Keaton called, claiming his spot in the four-day life skills course right before the Christmas holiday. After only a few days, Keaton said he was convinced it was the program to aid him in his reentry to society and ultimately help him stay out of trouble.

“Back in the ’90s when I got out, no one said go here or go there,” Keaton said. “You were out. You were told they had a bed for you if you messed up. It was all on me to get a job.”

In late January, on a sunny but cold morning, Keaton was one of a dozen men clearing an illegal dumping site in northeast Oklahoma City. Dressed in layers with a bright yellow safety vest and steel-toed work boots, Keaton stacked tires and picked up debris. A day earlier, Keaton spent the day at CEO’s Oklahoma City office, updating his resume with a job coach.

“I am looking for warehouse [work],” Keaton said as he explained he has his 8

forklift license and a desire to complete heavy equipment training. “I like everything. I am a hands-on guy. I wouldn’t mind being on a road crew, bridge crew or construction crew. I don’t mind doing or learning. It’s just getting my foot in that door where I have a chance to learn.”

Tackling recidivism

Breaking the cycle of recidivism, or the “revolving door” in and out of prisons, requires a new approach to employment — transitional employment.

That’s what CEO provides parolees or probationers with felony convictions coming out of the criminal justice system. The New York-based organization’s model puts people to work within days of their release from prison because of agreements with state and local agencies. The government agencies contract with CEO, which employs and supervises the participants, to perform tasks.

“The conversation is shifting to ‘How can we support these individuals?’ rather than putting them in jails or prisons and hoping for the best when they get out,” said Pat Viklund, CEO’s Oklahoma City director, from his office at 228 Robert S. Kerr Ave., Suite 600, a block away from the Oklahoma County Courthouse. “I think everyone recognizes that a job is critical to success.”

About four years ago, the national program opened an office in Oklahoma City, taking men and women tackling the employment barrier that has long stood in the way of those recently released from prisons or jails. Businesses are generally hesitant to hire the formerly incarcerated, who might have limited work experience and low educational attainment.

While government agencies and nonprofit organizations have long helped the formerly incarcerated find employment after prison, CEO provides a job

and a daily paycheck to its clients right away, which is a benefit for those who have legal bills and fines or child support bills to pay following their release. Over the course of two to three months, CEO’s job coaches support participants in their development of both soft and hard skills and connects them with employers paying above minimum wage.

Inside CEO’s Oklahoma City office, snapshots of program alumni who have held jobs for 12 months are displayed in the lobby. Viklund pointed out several, sharing the former participant’s name and what they do for a living now. The program offers incentives to its participants to stay employed and ultimately make better choices, he said.

Since 2013, CEO’s Oklahoma City office has made 500 full-time job placements.

The conversation is shifting to ‘How can we support these individuals?’ rather than putting them in jails or prisons and hoping for the best when they get out.

Pat Viklund “The idea is to push our participants to attachment to the workforce so that they don’t end up in prison or jail,” Viklund said. “We want them in the community, working and taking care of their families.”

Down to business

Between 200 and 250 clients come through the doors of OKC’s CEO office in a year’s time. New clients, who are referred to the program by parole officers, undergo a four-day life skills course, or a crash course in resume building, interview skills and common employment practices. In those initial four days, CEO volunteers — often local business leaders — conduct mock inter-

views with participants.

On Thursday afternoon, CEO staff passes out steel-toed work boots, which signify the next phase of the program, transitional employment. The next day, the work begins.

CEO partners with the municipal governments of Oklahoma City, Edmond and Moore. At 8 a.m., 15-passenger vans filled with about a dozen clients travel to those municipalities for work, which can range from roadside maintenance to decommissioning police vehicles. At the end of the workday, around 3 p.m., each participant gets paid at a rate of $7.25 an hour.

“It helps someone have some cash in their pocket when they are really vulnerable and, in many cases, don’t have anything,” Viklund said.

One day each week, participants receive career mentoring and life skills guidance from job coaches who work to establish relationships with local employers. Job coaches refer participants to employers, where they complete job applications and often earn an interview. Participants may work for CEO for 75 days.

“We are trying to get them ready for the workforce,” Viklund said. “After we determine that they are, we set them up for those interviews. We don’t give them a list of employers and send them out.”

Part of the career mentoring includes help with wardrobe, thanks to donations by community members. Perhaps more importantly, participants are coached on how to answer questions about their criminal history and felony convictions. Viklund said participants are encouraged to answer the question honestly and transparently but also highlight their progress in the CEO program and motivation to work.

Part of the conversation

Over the past decade, CEO officials say they have placed 25,000 formerly incarcerated individuals in full-time employment nationwide. Six years ago, an independent evaluation of the program showed a recidivism rate between 16 and 22 percent lower than the general rate.

In September, the Oklahoma City Council approved a six-month agreement with CEO, which is set to end Feb. 28.

Viklund explained feedback from city staff, as well as Ward 6 Councilwoman Meg Salyer, has been positive. Salyer shared she is supportive of the program continuing.

“Criminal justice reform is a giant topic on all of our minds,” Salyer said. “Being able to creatively use programs that help keep people out of jail, change lives but are also more fiscally responsible.”

Viklund contended that CEO has a part to play in the local conversation around criminal justice reform and breaking the cycle of re-incarceration.

“With the national conversation on criminal justice, people are recognizing that we need a smarter way to support our communities and people who made a mistake,” Viklund said. “We are changing that conversation too.”

No justice

Asking the voters in Alabama if their Judge Roy Moore is innocent is like asking the “good ol’ boys” in the movie Deliverance if Burt Reynolds was justified for defending his buddies against extreme sexual abuse and possibly murder.

What do you think them “good ol’ boys” down yonder would say? They have their own justice down South, and I believe that’s been proven over and over through history. It’s kinda like Donald Trump having his own facts and reality. It’s whatever he wants it to be.

The sad part also is the traditional Republicans are falling into this way of thinking — not all, but some. It’s do whatever it takes to pass a so-called tax reform/budget no matter who it hurts.

We’ve known for decades that the Repubs are against government having anything to do with helping people get a start. Whether it’s education, health care or courses to train people ... their answer is no.

Of course, that’s easy to say when you’re a congress person making $174K a year or the CEO of big business. The really sad part, though, is that their base isn’t quite conscious enough to see that it will affect them the most.

If you go back in history, you’ll find that a lot of the farmers were Democrats.

Oh, they were conservative ... but still Democratic.

And the reason why was it takes common sense to be a good farmer. And common sense is something today’s Republican just doesn’t have.

Just a bill?

I wonder if the citizens of Oklahoma have had a chance to read the next proposed Republican tax bill. I know I haven’t had the chance. As citizens of this country, we have the right to read, comment and inform our elected officials how we want them to vote on any bill. In the case of the Republican tax bill, we, the citizens, haven’t been given the chance.

Also, have you or the citizens of Oklahoma actually looked at the new proposed tax rates? I have, and I’ve seen what they do to my federal tax rate.

Under the current tax rates, I am paying 15 percent. Under the Senate plan, I will be paying 22 percent, and under the House plan I will be paying 25 percent.

Even with the doubling of the standard deduction, I will still be paying more.

Why is because they are eliminating the deduction for state and local taxes and eliminating the medical expenses deduction. With losing these two deductions, I’m getting the privilege of paying more in federal taxes. This is what the Republicans are doing to people like me.

Of course, my saying anything won’t change anything. The deal is already made. And I mean exactly that — the deal is already made. That is the deal made with senators to get this bill passed because they wanted to do it before the end of the calendar year and for that reason only.

Today, we salute you, former AllianceHealth Midwest Hospital security guard Jonathan Hazar.

While patrolling the hospital, you pulled out your smartphone and snapped photos of dirty piles of dishes, brown toilets and overall questionable conditions at the medical center. Was that black mold?

Sure, you had just gotten fired for an unrelated incident and then decided to post the photos on social media and alert the public. But hey, who else would have done it?

Now, those photos have been viewed by thousands and broadcasted by all the local television stations. You’ve caught the attention of Midwest City leaders like city manager Guy Henson and Rep. Roger Ford. The Midwest City Council, which is also the Midwest City Memorial Hospital Authority, questioned AllianceHealth CEO Clay Franklin about the conditions at their most recent meeting.

Sure, you’ve been called “a disgruntled former employee” in statements from AllianceHealth Midwest, who was “disappointed in the depiction” of the hospital. Well, we’d say the community is disappointed in AllianceHealth Midwest. So what if patient care was not provided in those units; you don’t think that’s an excuse for the lack of care to the facility. Frankly, the public doesn’t either.

Keep it up, Hazar! Consider going undercover again. Maybe next time you can visit the Oklahoma State Department of Health and snap photos that shed some light on the state agency’s past financial mismanagement practices!

S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders left a permanent mark on many writers during their adolescence, but for the Chicken-Fried News team, it is practically canon. New reporters are issued a paperback copy with their employee handbooks, and when BBC America recently showed Francis Ford Coppola’s 1983 film version, staffers greased their hair back, rolled up cigarette packs in their T-shirt sleeves and poured one out for Johnny Cade.

Adoration for Hinton’s work is so complete that following a recent rumble with the editorial board at The Oklahoman, a CFN intern bleached her hair with hydrogen peroxide and hid for days in an abandoned church.

Over 50 years after The Outsiders was published, the novel depicting the class struggles between greasers and socs in mid-1960s Tulsa still inspires uncommon devotion among young readers.

That fervor spills over into social media, a realm that would be as foreign to TwoBit, Dally and Sodapop as wearing khakis or listening to The Beatles.

Recently, Hinton showed she can bring the sharp knives in a rhetorical rumble. On Jan. 23, a recent reader of The Outsiders tweeted to the Tulsa-

based author, equestrian and Supernatural superfan the following spoilerfilled question, Why did Johnny and Dally have to die in The Outsiders? The reader ended the tweet with an emoji blowing its nose.

Hinton’s answer: “Because I am a stone cold bitch.”

Cherry Valance could have said the same thing to Ponyboy when he confronted her about not visiting Johnny in the hospital, but it probably would have gotten The Outsiders banned from CFN’s middle school library.

Boxing Day?

Where were you Jan. 17, 2018? Were you at the Oklahoma City Thunder’s home game against the Los Angeles Lakers, a game attended by celebrity millionaire boxing champion Floyd Mayweather?

Were you at a quasi-charity dinner party at Broadway 10 Bar & Chophouse for the benefit of a sub branch of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), an event also attended by Mayweather? Or maybe you were just taking your dog for a leisurely walk in the park.

It does not matter what you were doing that day or how close in proxim-

ity you came to the professionally undefeated boxer and resident of Las Vegas, Nevada, with no known ties to the Sooner State. Because as long as you were doing it in Oklahoma, you were doing it on a day deemed by the governor’s office as a statewide celebration of Mayweather.

Earlier on Jan. 17, the office of Gov. Mary Fallin issued an official citation honoring Mayweather that day. What dumbfounded many Oklahomans about the decision, other than the fact that the boxer has utterly no local connection, is that Mayweather has been accused of domestic violence against women on numerous occasions. He’s not exactly a figure that should be championed on a statewide level.

In a video interview with NewsOK.com, Fallin responded to the wide backlash by saying the citation was made, in part, at the request of Mayweather’s manage-

ment in honor of his charity efforts in OKC that night. His AAU benefit bash donated an undisclosed portion of proceeds to the athletic organization.

Usually the only type of May weather that gets celebrated around here is the type that did not include any harmful tornados. Oklahoma should try to keep it that way.

Fallin emphasized with NewsOK that the honor was a citation, not the more official proclamation, which requires legislative approval — as if it should be comforting to know an alleged domestic abuser only received a half honor from the state.

In the interview, Fallin sounded as if she regretted her office’s citation.

“We try to have several eyes look upon it to make sure we don’t have situations like this happen,” she said. “In this case, it didn’t work quite the way I would hope it would.”

No, it certainly did not.

Oklahoma was suckerpunched by the champ.

Saturn Grill succeeds in offering filling vegetarian options among hearty meat choices. By Jacob Threadgill

In a 2013 article in The Oklahoman, Saturn Grill owner and chef Joseph Royer is quoted as saying that he eats meat once per day.

Five years later, Royer estimates 70 percent of his meals are plant-based. As Royer’s own tastes have changed, so has the menu at Saturn Grill, 6432 Avondale Drive.

After a remodel in 2014, Royer began a menu overhaul that has slowly progressed, and now the popular Nichols Hills location has a nearly 50/50 split between meat and vegetarian items.

Royer said he made the switch because the city didn’t have an abundance of vegetarian and vegan cuisine.

“I see quite often on social media that people thank us for having so many vegetarian and vegan options,” Royer said. “I know the interest is there and it is growing. We’ve garnered loyalty from people that live that lifestyle, and really that’s what Saturn Grill is, a lifestyle brand.”

Royer elaborated on the brand as a place for someone who wants to eat healthy but doesn’t subscribe to a strict diet. In some ways, it felt like Royer was speaking about me.

Like Royer, I’ve found myself eating less and less meat the last few years.

Don’t get me wrong; I have a life’s goal to find the ultimate chile verde carnitas, but I try to eat meat about four meals a week. I’ve found that it’s a much more healthy mentality to approach eating meat as a treat rather than something that has to be with every meal.

Specifically for our health and wellness issue, I wanted to review a few vegetarian dishes at Saturn Grill that maybe you, a loyal reader and omnivore, have wanted to try but were waiting for feedback.

Perusing options

Over a few visits, I worked my way through the menu that includes sandwiches, pizzas, salads, pasta and entrees.

The item I was most curious about was the vegan meatball pasta ($9.95).

Royer, a trained chef and alum of Kurt Fleischfresser’s famed apprenticeship program, is also the executive chef and partner for The Metro Wine Bar & Bistro, 6418 N. Western Ave. Royer develops each recipe on the menu. The meatballs are made using vital wheat gluten, which mimics the chewiness of meat, and soy protein, which gives the meatball a textural component.

I expected the meatballs to be drier like a veggie patty made from beans and vegetables. I was not prepared for a juicy and rich meatball. You could’ve blindfolded me and told me it was a blend of pork and beef and I would’ve believed you.

“They’re convincing for sure,” Royer said as he remembered a time when a patron wanted to double-check that the meatballs really were, in fact, meat-free because he had to follow doctor’s orders.

“He said he was so happy to find a filling meal without meat.”

The best bites of the dish came from pairing the saltiness of the green Castelvetrano olives, the meatball and the spicy tomato sauce. In the past, I’ve been a fan of Saturn’s roasted chicken tortellini ($9.95), which tops cheese tortellini with pesto cream, spinach, sundried tomatoes and roasted chicken.

The pesto came calling for me again with the vegetarian mushroom lasagna ($11.95) because Saturn does something I haven’t seen. They put pesto in the ricotta layers between noodles. I found it a nice touch for a dish, even the vegetarian variety that is on a ton of menus in the city.

When you Google Saturn Grill, it comes up listed as a pizza restaurant, which is something Royer has noticed and finds amusing.

“I don’t know how to change it, and I don’t know how I’d want to classify it even if I could,” Royer said.

In fact, pizzas constitute the smallest portions of sales of any of Saturn Grill’s menu sections. Royer said its 12 sandwiches sell more than the rest of the items on the menu combined. I think a lot of that has to do with Saturn Grill’s flatbread, which is cooked from dough with every order. My personal favorite is the roasted chicken sandwich ($9.95) with Swiss cheese, tomato, mixed greens and honey mustard.

Since the sandwiches are so popular, I decided to zig as everyone else is zagging for my final order of the review.

I ordered The Brogan Vegan pizza ($9.95), which tops its crust with tomato sauce, roasted red bell peppers, red onion and Portobello mushrooms. The pizza is baked and then finished with spinach, falafel and spicy red pepper sauce.

As far as pizzas go, I can see why it’s the least popular menu item at Saturn Grill. The dough was thin, but still soft and chewy. I would’ve preferred a crispier crust, but the rest of the ingredients were very good, highlighted by the crumbled-up falafel.

Royer said he spent five years perfecting the falafel recipe, finally settling on a recipe inspired by the Lebanese version of the ubiquitous fried chickpea ball.

Royer opts for a coarse chop on parsley, leaving the stem on for extra crunch and adding onion, garlic and spices.

The Nichols Hills Saturn Grill remains the flagship, as ancillary locations on Memorial Road and Walker Avenue have closed in recent years, but business is doing well. Royer said Saturn Grill approaches 400 customers per day, and I certainly understand the appeal.

“I definitely think that there is nothing else like us in town,” Royer said.

“It’s nice to offer a unique product in the city that people seem to enjoy.”

Oklahoma Gazette separates fact from fiction in the ever-changing world of nutrition science.

A popular interesting fact on the internet is that before 2013, Pizza Hut was the largest purchaser of kale in the United States, but only as a garnish for its salad bar.

The idea that the most nutrient-rich item in the salad bar was not even intended to be eaten sounds too good to be true, and there is some nuance there.

The fact has spread across the internet thanks to an uncited statistic in a Medium.com blog post.

Pizza Hut has not confirmed the statistic even as national media sources like National Public Radio (NPR) have asked.

the leafy green superfoods, and only highlights the ever-changing nature of nutrition science and trends.

Are you one of those people who can’t get over the bitter taste and chewiness of kale? Consuming vegetables or fruit raw is the only way to gain all of their nutrients, but for many, that can be a nonstarter with kale, even after a healthy massage.

If you’re looking for a replacement, especially a green that is easier to eat raw, look no further than watercress, which tops a study done at William Patterson University ranking 17 vital nutrients on a nutrition density score.

Used as a topping for tacos or in a salad, watercress can provide a boost, but it can be hard to find in the Oklahoma City metro. It is available year-round at Whole Foods Market and Sprouts Farmers Market, while Crest Fresh Market offers it in the spring.

Beet greens are more readily available than watercress and nearly as

nutrient-dense.

“They are more nutrient-dense than the beets themselves, so we should all be eating them rather than throwing them away,” said Jessica Cox, nutritional health coach at Natural Grocers, 7013 N. May Ave. The beetroot itself has many benefits. It is an excellent pre-workout snack because it is high in nitrates that the body converts to nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels and provides more blood and oxygen to extremities for better endurance, Cox said.

Kale isn’t the only superfood that has gone from obscurity to ubiquity over the last decade. Look no further than quinoa, which is touted as a protein-rich alternative to traditional grains, but a cup of quinoa (8 grams) has less than half the protein of a cup of lentils (18 grams.)

Quinoa’s explosion in popularity has put a tremendous ecological strain on the crops of Peru and Bolivia because the plant needs specific altitude and environmental conditions to survive.

If you’re looking to acquire protein from grain, consider ancient ones like amaranth or spelt.

Radical scavengers

The term “antioxidant” has become a catch-all for the nutrients that eliminate harmful free radicals that cause damage to cells, protein and DNA, but the FDA only considers beta-carotene, selenium and vitamins C and E as true antioxidants, Cox said. Everything else is a free radical scavenger.

One of the most potent free radical scavengers is cacao, the seed from which cocoa and chocolate are made. This doesn’t mean eating a box of Hershey’s is a great health choice. Chocolate must be at least 70 percent cacao to provide any benefits.

“When it’s lower, there is more other stuff like sugar and milk, which isn’t as beneficial,” Cox said. “Real cacao is actually bitter… it’s great for healthy blood pressure, the brain and mood. There are studies that show it increases the production of

feel-good brain chemicals, like serotonin.”

Another emerging free-radical scavenger is black seed oil, which is made from cumin, caraway, sesame, onion and coriander seeds. Fat-soluble amino acids help regulate immune systems, and it’s great for nutrient absorption and kidney and cell membrane health, Cox said.

Immune system boosting has been important during the influenza season.

Cox said the elderberry section of the natural products section was wiped clean over the winter.

“People are becoming more open to natural products,” Cox said. “We always tell them to check with your doctor first to make sure nothing you’re already taking interacts with (the natural product).

People don’t realize that more people die of prescribed opioids every year in America than of illegal drugs. Doing the natural route should be first step.”

High in Vitamin C

Camu camu is a berry from the Amazon rain forest, and it packs 600 milligrams of vitamin C in one teaspoon of powder, 10 times as much as an orange and more than 700 percent of the FDA’s daily needed value.

Wild blueberries have twice as many nutrients than the much larger farmraised blackberries, and they’re now more available in frozen packages during the off-season.

“They have to defend themselves in the wild, so they have to resist disease and elements by producing extra nutrients to protect themselves,” Cox said.

Coffee alternative

Thanks to the amino acid L-theanine, green tea releases caffeine slowly, compared to the rush and inevitable crash of coffee. The average person loses the benefits of fiber and additional flavonoids when green tea is steeped, Cox said.

Matcha powder is the best way to get the added benefits of fiber because the entire leaf is consumed after the powder is whisked into hot water.

“Matcha lattes are the best,” Cox said. “I can’t do coffee because of the jitters and the crash.”

After leaving the kitchen full-time, Beth Ann Lyon wants to shape lifestyle ‘beyond the fork.’

Oklahoma City chef Beth Ann Lyon made her Food Network debut earlier in January with an appearance on the competition game show Guy’s Grocery Games.

Lyon advanced in the first round of competition by recreating a chickenfried steak recipe that she wrote for the successful debut of The Press restaurant in 16th Street Plaza District.

During the second round of the show, Lyon opted to stay true to her current path in life, one that is focused on nourishment and vitality. Lyon made plantbased cauliflower tacos that didn’t earn favor with the judges.

“A lot of my friends were like ‘Why did you cook vegan food? You could have won,’” Lyon said. “How you view abundance and how I view abundance is completely different. I spoke my truth and used that platform as a way to tell people that there is a joyful way to eat.”

Eschewing traditional diet constraints, Lyon doesn’t refer to herself as a vegan or vegetarian. Instead, she prefers the term “intuitive eater,” which was coined by local yoga and mindfulness instructor Tisha Tate.

At Chi Gallery, operated by Corrie Moore, Lyon is offering a series of bimonthly classes called Second Sunday Workshops. The first, focused on selfcare, is Feb. 11.

Citing the work of modern spiritualist Eckhart Tolle, Lyon’s series of classes will start with learning to take time for yourself and helping to teach the context behind the ego’s penchant for producing negative thoughts.

“We have the answers inside of us, but they’re hidden under shame, resentment and anger,” Lyon said. “We have to pull these things out of us, and it’s called ‘the work.’ That’s the self-love.”

A Feb. 25 class will focus on plant medicines, and the March 11 class is understanding a holistic approach to treat anxiety.

“It’s a realistic bag of tools for people that don’t want to get on Prozac,” Lyon said, noting that she relies on daily baths to help center her thoughts and clear her mind.

“When you can be an observer of each thought and understand, ‘I am not that thought,’ [it’s important],” Lyon said.

“The thoughts of, ‘I’m fat; I’m stupid; I’m broke,’ is coming from your ego and your ego is here to work against you.”

Creative symmetry

OCU welcomes the Symbiotic collaborative art series to Hulsey Gallery. By Ben Luschen In 2016, local ceramic artist Jarica Walsh co-curated the first Symbiotic exhibition with friend Katie Pendley at University of Oklahoma’s Lightwell Gallery. The show presented an unusual opportunity for student artists, pairing them with established local career artists.

It was originally a one-off exhibit, but as Walsh and Pendley saw how well the collaborative sessions between artists were going and received positive feedback from participating students, they began to see it as something more.

“At that point, I started thinking, ‘This should happen again,’” Walsh said.

Symbiotic moves from OU to Oklahoma City University for its latest installment. This is the first show in the series to take place outside Norman.

Guests can enjoy works in multiple mediums from seven artist teams. An opening reception is scheduled 6-8 p.m.

Friday at OCU’s Nona Jean Hulsey Gallery.

The gallery is located inside the school’s Norick Art Center, 1609 NW 26th St. Participating community artists are invited to work with the students who are selected by curators through an application on Symbiotic’s website.

Students participating in the latest show come not only from OCU, but OU, Oklahoma State University, Oklahoma Christian University, the University of Central Oklahoma and Southwestern Oklahoma State University.

Artist teams include Autumn Brown with students Van Nguyen and Abbie Sears; Adam Lanman with Noelle Moon, Courtney Segrest and Matthew Wakeham; Steffanie Halley with Kyla Bruegel and Emily Spalding; Dan Harris with Reva Kashikar and BJ Stepp; Mandy Messina with Sidney Bernbaum and Shakurah Maynard; Marissa Raglin with Jasmine Jones; and Romy Owens with Rebecca Curtis, Alyssa Howery and Jake Jones.

With founding curator Pendley busy with graduate school, Walsh handled curating duties solo for this show. In some past Symbiotic exhibits, Walsh and Pendley worked to create their own art as well, but the extra work became cumbersome. This year, Walsh is consolidating her efforts.

“I realized that was something I didn’t want to do,” she said. “I didn’t want to make art for a show that I’m curating.”

Bridging gaps

The first Symbiotic show was born out of a call for proposals by OU’s Lightwell Gallery. Walsh and Pendley had already been talking about doing a show together before they saw the call and submitted their own proposal.

“Because we were wanting to collaborate,” Walsh said, “it made sense to do a show on collaborations.”

show was something that would interest college-student artists. “[While attending school,] I felt really separate from the Oklahoma City arts scene,” she said. “I knew if I was feeling that way, the other students were as well.”

I like the idea of taking it out of the gallery and making it more accessible.

Symbiotic is a good way for young artists to get their foot in the door and establish relationships in the art community that will be beneficial to them after graduation.

Walsh, who was also named associate director at Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition (OVAC) in 2017, first began attending OU after high school. She studied film but got burned out on college after a few years and put school on hold.

In 2013, she made the decision to return to school and finish her degree.

This time around, she put all her focus on her new passion: ceramics.

“I fell in love to where I wanted to do that all the time,” she said.

Walsh currently maintains Paseo Arts District’s Walsh Pottery with fellow artist and husband Timothy Walsh. She said one of her greatest passions is working with other artists curating Symbiotic and other shows.

“Curating is fun to do,” she said. “It’s endlessly interesting.”

Increased accessibility

which community members can write.

On Saturday, Brown hosts a free (and currently full) papier-mâché workshop that is open to the public. As part of Symbiotic, Brown and her team made a papier-mâché dress that lights up when a button is pushed. Walsh said in the future, she would like more, if not all, participating artists to hold free workshops.

When Symbiotic finishes its OCU run, the artwork will make its way to Fowler Volkswagen of Norman, one of the exhibit’s main sponsors. This is the first time Symbiotic has sent its work to Fowler, and it will likely be the first time many future customers have ever seen an elaborate local art installation at a car dealership.

“I like the idea of taking it out of the gallery and making it more accessible,” Walsh said. “I like the idea of people who are just out shopping for a car and then they just run into this art.”

When people talk about Symbiotic, they often mention how greatly it benefits the student artists involved. But Walsh thinks the community artists have multiple things to gain from the experience as well.

Working with younger artists keeps the established on their toes. As student artists benefit from exposure to the larger art community, current members of that community benefit from outside perspectives.

“I think any time you’re working with a young artist, you’re getting inspired,” she said. “You’re finding out about new things, whether it’s cultural or sometimes even art stuff.”

Artist and longtime OBU educator Steve Hicks celebrates retirement with As I See It. By Ben Luschen

Retirement can be a good time for reflection and, sometimes, rebirth. The newest exhibit by Shawnee-based painter and recent Oklahoma Baptist University retiree Steve Hicks can be called an example of both.

Hicks taught art at OBU for 36 years before retiring early last year. His latest exhibit, As I See It, which has been open at Norman’s The Depot since Jan. 12, is one-half works from the last two decades of his career and one-half new pieces made within the last year.

The artist will be present during a free special reception 6-9 p.m. Feb. 9 at the former train station and exhibition space, 200 S. Jones Ave., in Norman.

The reception coincides with the monthly 2nd Friday Norman Art Walk.

As I See It remains on display at The Depot through Feb. 25.

Hicks said the exhibit is like a visual diary of his art career since the late 1990s.

“I went back and picked up some earlier things just to give people an idea of the range of my work,” he said.

His works are varied and range from abstracted versions of Oklahoma’s flat landscape to still lifes and even humorous parodies. A few pieces from Hicks’ series of Vincent van Gogh self-portrait spoofs are included in As I See It. “Bass Pro van Gogh” features the 19th-century postimpressionist wearing a Bass Pro Shops baseball cap. “Afro van Gogh” shows the artist with a Bob Ross bouffant.

Van Gogh had a particular fondness for self-portraits, painting more than 30 over the course of his short career.

painters or anything,” he said. “It’s just one of those things that sort of took off.”

The idea for the series stems from an elaborate inside joke within the family.

Hicks was known for driving around an old van, and his children — who include daughter Erin and local comedian and OKC Comedy co-founder Spencer Hicks — would joke that he should get a custom license plate that read “VAN GO” or something close to it.

One day, Hicks actually went to check the availability of such a plate at a local tag agency but found that pretty much every variation of “VAN GO” was taken.

Even after his failed attempt, Hicks’ association with van Gogh did not end among his children. One day, Spencer joked that his dad should paint Vincent van Gogh as a tennis pro, spawning several other van Gogh rhyme spoofs.

Hicks did not think the joke suggestions sounded like such a bad idea. He painted several examples and has steadily added to the series over the years.

As Hicks was going through his collection of work to select which pieces to include in As I See It, he was struck by his progression through the years, both in style and subject.

“Although some of the pictures have a similarity to them, you can kind of see differences in them,” he said.

Steady progression has been a constant for Hicks, both in his art and his life.

Natural knack

Though Hicks and his wife Cindy have now lived in Oklahoma for longer than they have lived anywhere else, both were born and raised in Kentucky.

Hicks said he has been drawing for as long as he can remember.

“My mom used to tell me that was the only way they could keep me quiet — with pencils,” he said.

In middle school and high school, Hicks would always get recruited to make posters for the various student groups and organizations. Art seems to have always been part of his reputation.

“I’ve always been fascinated with color and shape and paint application and how that affects people,” he said.

“It’s always been a part of me.”

Hicks first enrolled in University of Kentucky as a history major but eventually switched his course of study.

“I realized soon that art is a lot more interesting to me,” he said.

Steve Hicks After graduating with his art degree, Hicks was drafted into the U.S. Navy and did a tour of service in Vietnam. He spent many days and nights aboard an aircraft carrier, looking out at a blue horizon that seemingly stretched on forever. In a way, the sight contributed to his later fascination with painting Oklahoma’s skyline.

“It was kind of an interesting experience,” he said. “That might have something to do with those landscapes being so flat, because out at sea, that’s pretty flat, too.”

Teaching tenure

After completing his tour of duty, Hicks went on to earn a master’s degree in studio arts from Kentucky’s Murray State University. He then migrated west to earn his master of fine arts degree at University of Arkansas.

Hicks taught at schools in Arkansas and Louisiana before eventually getting a job offer at OBU. He liked the idea of working for a liberal arts school with a good reputation, and while he always

thought he’d eventually move on to a larger university, his relative comfort kept him in Shawnee for more than 30 years.

“It’s been enjoyable,” he said. “I have no complaints.”

When he was earning his art degrees in college, Hicks did not picture himself as a career professor. But as graduation approached, one has to find a way to make a living. Several of Hicks’ instructors recommended teaching as a way for an artist to make money.

Teaching did take Hicks away from his own art a lot, but he does not regret the profession. Working with and assisting students was often invigorating.

“They have a fresher, younger perspective on things,” he said. “There’s a nice give-and-take with that.”

Hicks is proud of the fact that many of the students in OBU’s art program have gone on to get art-related careers.

He said teaching was often as much a learning experience for him as it was for his students.

“I was never afraid to tell them, ‘I don’t know,’ if there was ever a situation that came up where I didn’t have any suggestions,” he said. “And sometimes they had comments and points about my work that I had to stop and consider and figure out.”

Own pace

Hicks enjoys having more time to paint and work on his own art now that he is one year into retirement. Still, life isn’t all free time. Hicks has several grandkids, including Spencer’s children.

Hicks and his wife spend a lot of their time acting as babysitters.

While his van Gogh series suggests a knack for humor, Hicks was not sure if he could take all the credit for his comedian son’s talent.

“I don’t know if I can claim all of that,” he said, laughing. “I think his mother has something to do with that, too.”

Hicks said the thing he enjoys most about retirement is the ability to focus all his time and energy on one particular project. There are no classes to lead, no papers to grade, no committee meetings to sit through — just one man and his canvas.

“It’s nice not to have those distractions,” he said.

As consumers continue cutting the cord to traditional cable television packages, there seems to be an endless supply of new streaming services competing to add another monthly charge to bank statements across the country.

Two new streaming services for movies, audiobooks and music are free.

All you need is a library card.

Oklahoma City’s Metropolitan Library System (MLS) has added streaming services Hoopla and Kanopy in recent months.

Available at MLS since August, Hoopla’s library includes movies, television series, music albums, eBooks, audiobooks and comic books. Kim Terry, director of marketing and communication at MLS, said the top format checked out is actually audiobooks.

“I thought it would be movies, but the audiobooks are super popular because they’re always available, unlike our other audiobook service Overdrive,” Terry said, noting that the library system only gets a certain number of digital licenses for each audiobook under Overdrive.

The number of users adopting Hoopla has more than doubled since the library made a marketing push in January. Over 2,500 people have signed up since the New Year, adding to the 1,872 people that signed up in 2017.

Top movie rentals on Hoopla include a documentary on the Broadway smash hit Hamilton, 2014’s fantasy musical Into the Woods and critically acclaimed 2017 release The Lost City of Z. Hoopla is a digital subsidiary of Midwest Tape, a company that has provided physical DVDs and audiobooks to public libraries nationwide for decades, according to Variety. debuted in 2013. It includes requisite phone and tablet applications, but the service recently added connectivity with Amazon’s Fire TV and Apple TV this past November.

Users get six rentals across all media types on Hoopla every month. Movies and TV shows are available for 72 hours, music albums are available for seven days, and audiobooks, eBooks and comics can be accessed for 21 days.

MLS’ website includes weekly posts on its Dog-eared Blog for suggestions of top movies, audiobooks and comics to check out on Hoopla.

Whether it is the physical building or our virtual library, we want people to use our services.

Homebound classics

Kanopy was founded in Australia in 2008 and started as a partnership for university libraries before expanding to public libraries in 2017, according to Toronto Star. Kanopy’s service includes over 30,000 films.

“About a year ago, I really wanted to watch Donnie Darko because I hadn’t seen it in a long time,” Terry said. “I couldn’t find it on any other service, and I didn’t want to pay to watch it on Amazon. I found it on Kanopy recently along with all of these old, niche movies and more contemporary independent films.”

Kanopy joined the MLS in the last month. It also has a monthly restriction of six plays per month, and films are available for three days.

More than books

Hoopla and Kanopy are the latest in the digital push for MLS, which derives its funds from property taxes.

“We want to be an important part of the community at all of our 19 locations; whether it is the physical building or our virtual library, we want people to use our services,” Terry said. “A lot of things are going digital, and you don’t even have to come into the library. Once they are aware of those services, they will pay more attention to us. It’s interesting; when I first got here 12 years ago, the majority (of the budget) was all going to physical materials, and now they’re dividing it up.”

For many people, the library is the first place they’re introduced to such technology. Staff is trained to help people who have trouble downloading the application on smartphones and tablets.

Sign-up is through third-party websites, which has led to some confusion when both Kanopy and Hoopla ask for a pin number in addition to the user’s library card number. The pin number is the user’s last name.

Poetic justice

Poetry and Chill brings audiences spoken word, music and unity with no Netflix required. By Ben Luschen

Oklahoma City-based poet and hip-hop artist Gregory II had never hosted an event of any kind before July 29 last year.

He had no idea how many people would show up to his first Poetry and Chill event and was surprised when a crowd of more than 60 gathered for the showcase.

“I was like, ‘I don’t even know any of these people,’” he said.

That success has pushed Gregory to keep moving forward with the free poetry and music showcase event. The first three Poetry and Chill events were held at The New Black Wall Street Marketplace on the city’s northeast side, but its rapidly growing popularity sparked a move three minutes down NE 23rd Street to the larger venue Bistro 46 Restaurant & Grille.

Poetry and Chill will hold its first event of 2018 at 8:30 p.m. Feb. 10 inside the restaurant and performance venue, 2501 NE 23rd St. Gregory II hosts the event alongside Better Black News founder Jillian Whitaker. Skyy Webster, maS.T.A.Rpeace, GlenJamin and Anthony Crawford are scheduled to perform poetry. Live music will be provided by Spunk Adams. Additional special guests will also perform.

“I’m trying to show Oklahoma that there is a lot of talent here and they can come and see it for free,” Gregory II said.

While the event is held in a historically black part of the city, the poet wants everyone to come and enjoy the spoken word and music at no charge.

“I want everybody — every race and culture — to come to this so they can see that it’s all one here,” he said.

Gregory II was born in Oklahoma City and has been writing poetry and rap lyrics since he was a child. He moved to Los Angeles for a few years after high school to study film and experience life in a new city.

While living on the West Coast, he saw several large events dedicated to poetry and R&B music — events unlike those that existed in OKC. When he moved back to his hometown, he wanted to bring something like that back with him.

unteer staff. She said the event always features a positive atmosphere.

“When you go to Poetry and Chill, you feel at home,” Blaylock said. “The ambiance is nice and the people — everyone is just rooting each other on.”

Gregory said he was surprised so many people like Blaylock committed themselves to helping at the event. Without a staff of volunteers wearing their popular Poetry and Chill shirts (which are sold at the event), he thinks the showcase would not have taken off like it did.

“I was more surprised by the people who helped me than the people who showed up,” he said. “The people who helped me made it more appealing when the people showed up.”

The popularity of Poetry and Chill showed Gregory that OKC supports events as long as they are of high quality.

As the showcase builds a larger following, Gregory has come across more opportunities for expansion. High schools have approached him to host Poetry and Chill events, and the town of Geronimo in Comanche County has asked about bringing an event there.

Gregory said part of the appeal for Poetry and Chill is that it highlights a frequently overlooked art form.

Through Poetry and Chill, the audience can gain a better understanding of what spoken word is and the relationship between poetry and music.

“It’s more like a learning experience, too,” he said. “Where does poetry come from? What does it mean?”

The Harlem Globetrotters and guard Ace Jackson bring exciting exhibition basketball to OKC. By Ben Luschen

Ace Jackson is in her third season as a basketball player for the legendary Harlem Globetrotters, a team of goodwill ambassadors charged with spreading basketball and smiles to fans around the globe.

She will arrive with the team in its return to Oklahoma City for a game against rival team and perpetual underdog Washington Generals 2 p.m.

Feb. 10 at Chesapeake Arena, 100 W. Reno Ave. Tickets are $24-$170.

Jackson, known on the court simply as Ace, is one of four female players on the current Globetrotters roster. Though some unfamiliar with the team might be surprised to hear it includes female players, Globetrotters have a lengthy legacy of including women.

Lynette Woodard made history in 1985 when she became the first woman to play with the team. Several other female players followed in her footsteps, and Ace is the 13th woman to don an official Globetrotter jersey.

“When people come to the games, they’ll see how well we play on a team with the guys,” Ace said. “We like to say how we women are just as good ballplayers as the guys on the team. We’re all ballplayers; we all love the game; we all love what we do.

We just happen to be women.”

Ace said she sees a lot of young girls at the game but added that pretty much every type of person can be found at a Globetrotters game. She is aware of her status as a role model for younger fans and likes hearing positive words not just from girls in the crowd, but young boys as well.

“They come up to me and they’ll always say, ‘Girl power!’” she said. “I love hearing that. I love the sense of empowerment that we bring to the team.”

Life is not always fun. Ace knows this and welcomes the chance to provide a distraction from the day-to-day grind.

“They come to our game and they forget all those things that are going on,” she said. “All they know is that they’re having a great time with their families and with their friends. It becomes a lifetime memory.”

We’re all ballplayers; we all love the game; we all love what we do. We just happen to be women.

Making it

Ace’s father began teaching her how to play basketball when she was 7 years old. At around 11, she was already starting to spin the ball on her finger and pick up some other basic basketball tricks.

Aside from humor and showmanship, the Globetrotters are known for demonstrating expert-level basketball tricks on the court. YouTube and the internet have spawned a golden era for interest in trick shots and fancy dribbling. Young players now have the opportunity to learn from the best from the comfort of their homes.

“Back in our day, when you had dial-up internet, it was more like you had to see it in person or pick up a DVD that was specifically made for basketball,” she said. “Kids these days have a wider base to learn from.”

Ace likes how young basketball enthusiasts have more resources at their disposal. She makes it a goal to stay active on social media with tips of her own.

She owes part of her career with the Globetrotters to current teammate Chris “Handles” Franklin. Both players

grew up in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Ace would attend basketball camps held

by Handles in the city. One day, when the Globetrotters were having tryouts, he invited her to compete for a spot.

“I thought it was a joke at first,” she said. “But he was like, ‘No, they’re really having tryouts.’”

Ace aced her auditions and has traveled the world with the team for the past three seasons. She still remembers seeing her first Globetrotters game when she was 10. She has a photo of herself getting an autograph from Sweet Lou Dunbar, who is now one of her coaches on the team.

“Now I’m on the side where I’m not getting an autograph, but I’m giving it to others,” she said. “It shows you how my world has just turned upside-down for the better. I never thought I would be in this position.”

Staying fit

It goes without saying that travel is a big part of what the Globetrotters do. Ace said the team plays 300 games a year with tours that span across North America, South America, Europe and elsewhere.

With all that moving, it makes staying in shape and keeping the body sharp for the long grind a challenge. Ace was a professional trainer before she joined the Globetrotters, so fitness is particularly important to her.

“Time is very precious for us,” she said. “Our schedule is very hectic, so for us, it’s more about maintaining.”

She said some players on the team stay fit with mobile TRX System suspension training equipment. An expert training staff keeps the players’ shoulders and joints sharp for the long season.

Ace said she is a big proponent of highintensity interval training methods, often called HIIT. These types of exercises, often utilized by long-distance runners, are able to squeeze a more efficient exercise session into a smaller time window with short but explosive bursts of energy.

“It’s not long, but it’s intense,” she said. “You’re sweating, you’re getting active and you’re working out, but it just doesn’t take as long.”

Ace advised young basketball players to establish a good work ethic if they would like to play professional ball someday. She is forever thankful for the long hours she spent training with her dad because they helped her realize her greatest dreams.

“Your talents and your strengths and your abilities aren’t going to be handed to you,” she said. “You’ve got to work to get better.”

Teen Recovery Solutions hosts its second Run for Recovery to raise funds and awareness for its addiction programs. By Sean Isabella

The effects of drugs and alcohol addiction are felt nationwide on a daily basis.

In 2016, the National Center for Health Statistics reported more than 63,000 drug overdose deaths in the United States.

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism estimates 88,000 die annually from alcohol-related causes.

Addiction doesn’t discriminate; it affects all walks of life regardless of age, race or gender. This includes teenagers, a trend that has spawned more programs and resources like Teen Recovery Solutions in Oklahoma City to help fight the widespread problem.

“The availability of drugs, a lot of the emotional trauma these kids have dealt with in their homes and many of families are dealing with social and mental health issues and split families; the selfmedication you see with teens emerges earlier and can spiral out of control a lot quicker than maybe back when I was out there living a crazy life,” said Andrew Rice, executive director at Teen Recovery Solutions who battled addiction during his college years.

Teen Recovery Solutions provides long-term addiction recovery tools — including Mission Academy, the only recovery high school in Oklahoma — for OKC teenagers and families. These resources come with costs, and fundraising is paramount. Teen Recovery Solutions will host its second annual Run for Recovery Feb. 17 at Lake Hefner’s Bert Cooper Trails to raise awareness for teenagers and families in the community.

Raising awareness

Rice, who grew up in Oklahoma and

spent almost eight years working as a state senator, admitted he wasn’t familiar with Teen Recovery Solutions prior to his exposure four years ago.

He’s not alone.

And that’s where fundraising events like Run for Recovery come into play. The race debuted in 2017 with about 300 participants, a number Rice hopes to grow.

“It gets our name out there a little more,” Rice said. “Maybe there is a teen struggling and someone’s friend finds out about us and they Google us. We have kids who come our way that way.”

This year, entry fees include $25 for the 5K and $30 for the 10K. Teen Recovery Solutions is providing incentives with a campfire mug for the first 300 runners who register and medals for the top three male and female participants in each race.

Money raised helps supplement tuition at Mission Academy.

“Because we are a private school and because we are heavily resourced with mental health services and a lot of staff, most families, an overwhelming majority, can’t afford our full tuition, so we provide our own generous scholarships at different levels,” Rice said.

Serving youth

The success of Teen Recovery Solutions, a two-pronged approach that started in 2000, led to the opening of Mission Academy in 2006. By 2012, Mission Peer Group was added for nights and weekends to provide additional social and group support. Tuition for the Oklahomaaccredited school is bundled with Mission Peer Group, so money raised from Run for

Recovery helps support sober events that include things like laser tag or bowling.

Rice said Mission Academy currently has 12 students, although enrollment typically fluctuates between nine and 13.

“Part of why we’re small is we don’t take teens that are forced to come to us by the court or their parents,” he said.

“You have to earn your way in. We want to see a month of sobriety and a willingness that the kid wants to change.”

Typically, Teen Recovery Solutions serves ages 17 to 19. More recently, Rice said freshmen and sophomores have enrolled in the program. Addiction is affecting teens at such a young age, resulting in more states implementing recovery high schools.

“That’s sort of the model coming from in-patient rehabs and educators who specialized, saying that having a unique educational environment committed around sobriety for teens can be a lot more helpful and sustaining,” Rice said.

Effective model

Small enrollment size allows for more hands-on approach at Mission Academy.

But it doesn’t mean the costs aren’t small.

Rice said recovery methods can’t be done “on the cheap” because of behavioral issues that require the use of extensive resources.

“It works, but it takes a lot of staff and being really involved with their lives,” he said. “It’s like we’re one really big family where we know everything about each other. There are no secrets at our school.”

Rice called his staff a tight-knit community due to their own backgrounds with recovery or a family member or friend that has gotten caught up with drugs or alcohol.

Personal connections have strengthened a donor base to allow Teen Recovery Solutions to run effectively.

“It’s a model that can be effective that communities really have to rally around doing it,” Rice said. “It’s a heavy lift.”

Rice first heard about Teen Recovery Solutions through some friends before attending a lunch-and-learn community session. His hope is events like Run for Recovery can further efforts toward fighting addiction.

“This is a place for you to affirm yourself in a healthy way of sobriety.

We’re not asking anyone to change who they are,” he said. “It’s a pretty progressive environment. That’s really where the magic happens is for them to realize, ‘Wow! Maybe my life isn’t over and I’m not the piece of garbage I think I am.’”

The path to getting and staying fit can often lack creativity. Those looking to get more active often limit themselves to a small sampling of the same triedand-true options.

For one, there are always traditional gyms and fitness centers. Weight machines, dumbbells and StairMasters work wonders for many, but not everyone enjoys that kind of environment.

Schlapman: We’ve been friends with Taylor since she was a wee pup. We’ve known her since she was really young and just got started in the music business.

She’s always been very encouraging of us, and we’ve always been such big fans of hers. She’s such an incredible songwriter and performer. She has [Little Big Town member] Phillip Sweet’s email address, so she sent Phillip the song “Better Man” — a demo she had done. He listened and loved it and immediately sent it to us. She just sent it very casually and said, ‘You know, I’ve always heard your voices on this song. I know you’re making a record; give it a listen. If you want to cut it, it’s yours. If not, no big deal.’

The first month of 2018 was a busy one for Little Big Town.

The popular country vocal quartet based in Nashville is preparing to embark on The Breakers tour, which might be its biggest trek yet. The tour, assisted by Texas stars Kacey Musgraves and Midland, is in support of the band’s eighth studio LP The Breaker released in February 2017.

Oklahoma City has the honor of kicking off the run. The first show of The Breakers tour begins 7:30 p.m. Feb. 8 at Chesapeake Arena, 100 W. Reno Ave. Little Big Town also made its return to performing on the Grammy stage recently. Vocalist Kimberly Schlapman made a call to Oklahoma Gazette between Grammy practice sessions. The band not only performed during the awards ceremony’s main show, but was featured in the following I’m Still Standing tribute to legendary Elton John.

The Breaker received a lot of Grammy attention from voters. The release was a finalist for Best Country Album. Its lead single “Better Man” was a winner for Best Country Duo/Group Performance. The song was actually written and offered to Little Big Town by pop superstar Taylor Swift, who received a Best Country Song nomination for her songwriting efforts.

Aside from the tour and Grammy work, Schlapman spoke with Gazette about Little Big Town’s relationship with Swift, its salute to John and her admiration for McAlester-born Reba McEntire.

Oklahoma Gazette: What’s it like making your return to the Grammy stage? Two years ago, you all had that great performance of “Girl Crush” there.

Kimberly Schlapman: It’s one of the greatest honors in our career, to be asked to sing on the Grammy stage. My goodness, we all grew up watching that show in our living rooms and had dreams of being on that stage one day. Of course, none of us back then had any idea that it could ever happen or that it would ever happen. Even last night, as we were up on the stage rehearsing, we just looked at each other and it’s like a pinch-me moment. Like, how did we get here?

OKG: Does it feel any different performing on that stage as opposed to what you all would typically do?

Schlapman: Definitely. People like Kendrick Lamar and U2 don’t usually go to our concerts, so that’s different.

But it’s incredibly exciting. It’s a chance to show the world a little bit about country music. It’s nice to be chosen as an ambassador in that regard. We count it as such a privilege and honor.

OKG: Another interesting thing you all are involved with is the I’m Still Standing Grammy tribute to Elton John.

Schlapman: Oh my word, yes. That is another pinch-me, breathtaking moment for me. When we were invited to sing on that show, I was like, “Holy cow!” We’re

going to be playing with Elton’s band, and that band is one of the best in the music business. Hanging out with them last night and working through what we were going to do is so much fun. Those Elton songs are such a soundtrack to all of our lives. Everyone knows every word to all of those songs. This is the chance to perform one of those and make it our own.

We’re so excited because we’re going to be able to meet Elton and we’re actually going to be able to sing that song while we’re looking at him in the audience.

Kimberly Schlapman OKG: He recently announced that his next tour is going to be his last.

Schlapman: I know. I really, really want to see that tour. I’ve always wanted to be able to see him in concert, and I’ve never been able to catch one of those shows.

OKG: Your show in Oklahoma City is actually the kickoff to The Breakers tour, and I know a lot of people are looking forward to it.

Schlapman: That’s the very first show of the tour that we’ve been planning for, really, our whole career. We’ve always been wanting to go on a tour like this, and we’ve been waiting for the right time.

This is the year. This is really the biggest tour we’ve ever done. It’s just going to be an incredible year, and to kick it off in Oklahoma City is really special.

OKG: A lot of people talk about “Better Man” and how Taylor Swift

OKG: No big deal. It might just win a Grammy, but no big deal.

Schlapman: Exactly. We all listened and immediately loved it. We could hear the potential for the harmonies on the chorus immediately. We cut it in the studio and invited her to hear what we had done and hoped that she would approve. She came and loved it and immediately said, ‘Play it again!’ It’s been really fun to have that success with her, and we’re just happy it didn’t go in Phillip’s spam folder or something. It’s been such a gift of a song, and it has opened us up to a new audience also.

It took us to another level.

OKG: Did you hear the recent news about Reba McEntire being cast to play Colonel Sanders in a coming KFC commercial?

Schlapman: I just saw that this morning.

I adore Reba McEntire. She is a goddess.

We have become friends over the years, and there is no more down-to-Earth superstar you will ever meet. She so has my heart. She’s just warm and so friendly and encouraging and loving. One of the most special moments in our whole career was with her, when she surprised us on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry and asked us to become members. Reba can do no wrong no matter what she does or who she is. We are her biggest fans.

OKG: Do you think this opens the door for you to take a Colonel Sanders role at some point in the future?

Schlapman: Well, if KFC comes knocking, I’ll certainly answer. I love their chicken legs; they’re my favorite. I could live off Colonel Sanders’ chicken legs.

OKG: That original recipe is hard to beat.

Schlapman: It is the best. You can’t beat it.

Precious Pearl

OKC-based Vonna Pearl gets inventive on its thrilling self-titled debut. By Ben Luschen

Often, the best albums are the ones that throw listeners for a loop, keeping them on their toes and taking them on a journey to places they might not have expected from the start.

Of course, there can be a fine line between crafting complex, intricate soundscapes and spoiling a release with misguided add-ons. Thankfully, Vonna Pearl sets a gold standard for itself on its self-titled debut LP released Jan. 12.

The album can be streamed on Spotify. Physical CD copies can be purchased at Vonna Pearl shows.

The Oklahoma City indie folk-rock quintet features a superbly talented lineup with vocalists Chelsey Cope (known for her work in the local band Elms and recently released solo debut Where Nobody Goes) and Taylor Johnson (Wurly Birds), guitarist Chavez Oliz, bassist Taylor Overholser, trumpeter Garrison Brown, saxophonist Adam Ray and drummer Billy Reid.

Right off the bat, it should be clear to listeners that they are tuned in to one of 2018’s best local albums so far.

The opener, “Arvada,” starts the album off with inviting horns and a sweet rhythm. The tune carries a lifting warmth that sets an immediate hook.

Cope and Johnson almost always sing in synchronized duet, and to great effect. Whether intentional or intrinsic, the singers seem to alternate between foreground and background depending on the song. Either way, it brings a nice layer of vocal variance to the project.

“Alone” is one of those songs that starts soft and steadily builds to a captivating mesh of noise. It’s great that the band lets this song breathe and take a life of Vonna Pearl’s self-titled debut is available to stream on Spotify. | Image provided

its own. One of Vonna Pearl’s most intriguing dimensions is the inclusion of saxophone and other horn instruments on several songs, and that brass chorus shines brightest here.

Other standout moments include the harmonies and lyrical intrigue of “Don’t Leave Me” and “Marigolds,” a love song with loads of sunny cheer.

One gem that should not be overlooked is relatively brief “People,” which plays like a pretty, poetic interlude. Slow-playing violin brings a moment of solemnity to the album.

The tracklist ends on a softer note as well. Cope’s vocals shine over a delicate, acoustic backdrop found on “Come with Me,” which ends with an infectious refrain. “South Side of the Sky” offers a fitting end with its hopeful lyrical tone.

Proper debuts don’t often come as sharp as Vonna Pearl’s effort. There is an eclectic mix of sounds in the tracklist, yet every piece seems to gel with the whole so well.

If there is a critique to be made of the album, it’s that moments of instrumental freedom and experimentation occasionally teeter toward self-indulgence. Take “Alone” and its near 7-minute runtime. Most of the song is phenomenal, hitting a great stride in its groove near the middle. But the last minute curiously strays to soft static with spacey bleeps and bloops that take the listener on a short detour from the momentum of the album.

But still, the band’s willingness to ride out and build off a riff or melody while fitting in some unexpected sounds is exactly what makes the debut so stellar. It would be a grave mistake if they veered far from that model.

What some call miscues could easily be chalked up to a difference in taste.

Hopefully Vonna Pearl has a lot more music in store for fans in the future. There is little doubt that they are off to an impressive start.
