CEO ADDRESS
Last month we were finally able to open our doors and invite others to join us for our first banquet since before the global pandemic shut everything down over two years ago. It was a fitting way to get back into the swing of things as we celebrated eight outstanding high school juniors at our Youth Tour Banquet. We awarded all expenses-paid-trips to either Washington, D.C. or Camp RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards), and all eight finalists did a wonderful job presenting their ideas. You can read more about the finalists and their trips on page 7. Overall, it was great to get back to some semblance of normal with some talented youth, their families, local educators, our board trustees and our employees. While we celebrated this year’s Youth Tour and Camp RYLA winners in-person, we must also remember the Youth Tour winners from the past two years. In 2020, the world shut down quite literally the week we had the banquet scheduled. Those finalists had worked hard to perfect their presentations, but never got the opportunity to present them as originally planned. We produced a virtual version of the presentations in 2020 and 2021, and while they each received scholarships, it’s hard to replace the experience, friendships and opportunities the Youth Tour trip brings. So, congratulations to this year’s winners, but also to Cecilia Alali, Taylor McGill, Grace Miller, Kade Schuermann, Henry Cargill, Lauren Haizlip and Brody Schuermann for a job well done in gracefully adapting throughout their respective contests. After a successful in-person Youth Tour Banquet, we are moving forward with planning to have in-person District and Annual Meetings. Keep an eye on upcoming Co-op News magazines for dates concerning these meetings, and save the date for Friday, Aug. 5, as we plan on joining once again at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman for our first Annual Meeting in three years. Also, please be sure to thank a lineworker if you see one working in your area this month. April 11 is National Lineworker Appreciation Day, and it's safe to say we would not exist without the dedication our lineworkers demonstrate and the pride they take in doing their job well. Thank you to each and every one of them and their families for safely keeping our lights on.

OEC named 2022 Tree Line USA Utility by Arbor Day Foundation for the 16th year in a row The Arbor Day Foundation recently named OEC a 2022 Tree Line USA Utility in honor of our commitment to proper tree pruning, planting and care across our service area. "This marks our 16th year in a row to be recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree Line USA Utility," said CEO Patrick Grace. "Proper vegetation management is a top priority for us — evidenced by our two certified on-staff arborists — and we will continue to maintain our rights-of-way with careful consideration to the vegetation we come in contact with." Tree Line USA, a partnership between the Foundation and the National Association of State Foresters, recognizes public and private utilities for pursuing practices that protect and enhance America's urban trees. Tree Line USA promotes the dual goals of delivering safe and reliable electricity while maintaining healthy community forests. "Trees are a critical part of urban landscapes all across the United States," said Dan Lambe, president of the Arbor Day Foundation. "Service providers like OEC demonstrate that it's possible Proper vegetation for trees and utilities to co-exist for the benefit of communities and management is a citizens." OEC achieved Tree Line USA top priority for us by meeting five program standards. — evidenced by our Utilities must follow industry standards for quality tree care, provide annual worker two certified on-staff training in best tree-care practices, sponsor a tree-planting and public education arborists..." program, maintain a tree-based energy conservation program, and participate in an Arbor Day celebration. — CEO PATRICK GRACE

TREES
OEC giving away 200 free trees in April
For the fifth year in a row, OEC is partnering with the Arbor Day Foundation to give free trees to member-consumers. "Members who take advantage of energy efficiency measures in the months leading up to summer can maximize their savings," said Daniel Lofland, energy efficiency solutions specialist. "We are proud to offer the Energy-Saving Trees program free of charge to our members." Energy-Saving Trees is a research-based, easy-to-use online mapping tool that takes the guesswork out of tree planting. By entering simple information about your home and yard, the tool calculates where to specifically and strategically plant trees for the greatest energy- and money-saving benefits. Planting the right tree in the right place is key to maximizing the energysaving benefits that trees provide. When planted properly, a single tree can save a homeowner up to 20 percent on energy costs. Members who are interested may begin claiming their one free tree on April 5 and must be able to pick it up at OEC's headquarters in Norman on April 23 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Visit www.arborday.org/OEC to register and for more information. BEST BRIGHTEST OEC crowns 2022 Youth Tour, Camp RYLA winners OEC awarded all-expenses-paid trips to eight extremely talented high school juniors during the 2022 Youth Tour Banquet held March 10 – the first banquet in twot years. The top four finishers — Karter Caves from Amber-Pocasset High School, and Brianna Lemaster, Collin Nguyen and RyanQuinn Szymanski from Westmoore High School — won a seven-day trip to Washington, D.C. on Oklahoma's Youth Tour. The other finalists — Anna Lindstrom and Preston Lewis from Westmoore High School, Lucas Coats, a homeschool student from Tuttle, and Kynnedi Faust from Newcastle High School — won trips to Camp RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards). Both trips will occur this summer. All applicants were asked to apply the cooperative business model to an unmet need or problem in their community and write a business proposal. Finalists created PowerPoint presentations and “pitched” their co-op business ideas in front of OEC trustees, senior staff, representatives from their schools, their families and three independent judges. “I am impressed by all the applicants and their passion for service,” said Tory Tedder-Loffland, OEC's education and outreach programs director. “What makes a co-op special is why it is in business and what it does with its revenue and these finalists understand that.” As the cornerstone of OEC's youth and leadership programs, Youth Tour has evolved over the years to encourage students to utilize technology to aid their presentations. "We believe [these aspects of the program] will benefit
these students as they enter the world of higher education and, eventually, the workforce," said Tedder-Loffland. The panel of judges included Sarah Mackey, manager of WeOkie Foundation at WeOkie Credit Union, Shavonne Evants, a realtor with Keller Williams-Mulinix of Norman, and Kory Frazier, marketing and communications specialist at Central Rural Electric Cooperative in Stillwater. As winners of the 2022 Youth Tour, Caves, Lemaster, Nguyen and Szymanski will travel to the nation's capital in June along with 70 of their peers from across the state — those 70 others will have also won their local electric coop's Youth Tour contests. They will spend the week touring Washington, D.C.'s historic monuments and museums, meeting with Oklahoma's Congressional delegation and making new, lifelong friends. While at Camp RYLA, Lindstrom, Lewis, Coats and Faust will learn improved techniques of leadership. Their enthusiasm and technique are brought back to their communities, where their positive influence impacts those around them. RYLA introduces a large number of young people and their families to the Rotary ideals of service each year. It helps bridge the communication gap between the generations and helps improve relationships among youth groups, families and the community. "I am confident OEC will be very well represented both in Washington, D.C. and at Camp RYLA," said OEC CEO Patrick Grace. "The board and I are happy to support programs that encourage our next generation of co-op members to dream big and become the community leaders we know they are capable of becoming." www.okcoop.org

SUMMER STORM SAFETY By Molly Hall, SafeElectricity.org
Weather, accidents, and storms can disrupt the electricity we are so used to having. Sometimes electricity flickers momentarily then comes back. Serious damage to power lines and the electric grid can cause outages for days or weeks. Safe Electricity has valuable information to keep you safe and comfortable during a power outage of any length. LONG-TERM POWER FAILURES If you use a standby generator, be sure it has been installed and wired properly. If improperly installed, a generator could cause dangerous conditions for OEC's linemen working to restore the power. Your generator could be damaged when the power is restored if a double throw disconnect is not used and properly installed. Of course, it is also important to be sure that a fresh supply of fuel to power the generator is on hand and stored properly. To make an outage easier to cope with, keep an adequate supply of the following on hand at all times. These should be kept in a cool, dry place and all members of the family should know where to find them. • • • •
Flashlights Battery-operated radio Candles and matches Basic first-aid supplies
• Extra supply of batteries for flashlights and radio • A small supply of drinking water and food • Baby supplies if an infant is in the home
Never go near downed power lines; let qualified OEC employees handle these situations. SUMMER POWER OUTAGES Keep freezers and refrigerators closed to keep food fresh. Frozen food is generally safe to eat if there are still ice crystals on it. Wrap blankets around the appliances to provide extra insulation. Bottled water, canned soda and juices eliminate dependence on the refrigerator if stored in a cool place. [5822311103] Air conditioners should be turned off during power outages. Do not turn them back on for several minutes after the power has been restored. Notify OEC at 405-321-2024 if you use life support equipment in your home or if a family member or neighbor is serving in the Armed Forces and is currently away from home for an extended period of time.

WFEC GENERATION REPORT Western Farmers Electric Cooperative (WFEC), OEC's wholesale generation and transmission power provider, has an impressive renewable portfolio that includes wind, hydro and solar. OEC's Solar Garden, located at Interstate 35 and Highway 77 in Norman, began producing power in February 2017, and Tuttle's 40-acre Solar Farm began operation in March 2017. As more solar facilities come online, expect to see it added to WFEC's generation report, increasing the already robust mix of renewable energy sources.
