PATRICK GRACE
CEO ADDRESS
You might have noticed OEC Fiber reached a milestone a few months ago when they reached the 20,000 subscriber mark. Now, it's OEC's turn as we celebrate serving reliable electricity to over 60,000 meters. The excitement of a new broadband network is easy to celebrate, especially one that's moving as quickly as OEC Fiber. The relevance of its unique story — bringing high-speed internet where no one else will — has taken a lot of focus and attention. Not to be lost in that excitement is the tremendous electric growth we have experienced at the same time. Serving electricity to 60,000 meters places us among the largest distribution electric co-ops in the nation. Only 7% of the 865 local, member-owned electric co-ops serve more members than we do. Growth is good. It leads to financial stability and the ability to invest more resources into improving our reliability and the overall member experience. As we grow our infrastructure, we are also creating jobs, which means we must adapt our facilities to accommodate a growing workforce. It also gives us a cushion from devastating events like ice storms and polar vortexes, as we’re able to absorb costs so our members don't have to. Our proximity to the Oklahoma City metro and consumers' migration to the suburbs has led to accelerated growth over the past five years. While most of our new construction is residential, plenty of commercial properties have continued to develop in the communities we serve and, as a result, our communities continue to grow. One of the reasons we invest in our communities and give back is to see them and our members thrive. Growth in the areas we serve is always good to see, and we are happy to continually be your trusted energy partner as we work to improve the quality of life for all those we serve.

ON THE COVER: On March 20, 1937, Dennis Kalivoda’s family had an electric meter connected in rural OKC by then Oklahoma Intercounty Electric Cooperative (now OEC). As OEC celebrates reaching the 60,000 meter milestone, that location remains home to the Kalivoda family and continues to be served by the co-op.

Whether learning in-person or virtually, we continue to offer programming guaranteed to stimulate minds no matter where they're located. OEC's nationally-award-winning, hands-on educational curriculum, Get Charged!, does just that while meeting Oklahoma state science standards in electricity or energy for grades Kindergarten through fifth. Designed through careful research and with input from several area teachers, the curriculum is interdisciplinary and fun. OEC Education and Outreach Programs Director Tory Tedder-Loffland has led the classroom program for five years and is gearing up for another year of educating the next generation about the amazing world of energy. Teachers can check out a fully stocked kit and lesson plan for their classroom or schedule a visit by TedderLoffland to facilitate the lesson in the classroom. [6204401102] Full curriculums, teacher's guides, kits and videos are available free of charge for Kindergarten through fifth grades. The kit includes projects and experiments focused on the components of electricity, and the teacher's guide and folder have everything the teacher needs to facilitate a lesson. "As part of the most popular experiment, the students learn about circuits, conductors and insulators," Tedder-Loffland said. "They draw a schematic of the circuit they are constructing, which powers a small light bulb. Later, that circuit operates a telegraph the students use to communicate using Morse Code." Get Charged! includes more than just electricity education. It also involves learning a little history and is a great program for homeschool lessons as well. Deborah Phillips "The kit is packed with so much material, I am finding it useful for some experiments Dryden School of Advanced Academics beyond what it is designed for," said Deborah Phillips of Dryden School of Advanced Academics. "We are doing every experiment and adding them as lab assignments to [one of our home schooler's] science class." Contact Tory Tedder-Loffland, 405-217-6726 or tory@okcoop.org, for more information and visit www.okcoop.org/LEARN to explore all the programs offered to youth in OEC’s service area and to reserve a Get Charged! kit for your classroom.

COST OF STAYING CONNECTED THE
Access to OEC Fiber services saves subscriber thousands of dollars Taking high speed internet where no one else will has been a cornerstone of OEC Fiber’s mission from the beginning. According to the National Center of Education Statistics, nearly 30 percent of Oklahoma homes do not have internet access. Over the past decade, internet connectivity has arguably become as essential as electricity, yet over one quarter of homes in our state have little to no access. Jerry Love was a part of that 30 percent. While there was DSL in his area, the unreliable connection and snail’s pace speed of 2 Mbps made it next to non-existent. “My data connection on my [cell] phone was probably 10x faster,” Jerry said. He thought his fortunes had changed for the better when he saw the cable company installing service on his road. Maybe, just maybe, slower than dial-up speeds would become a thing of the past. There was just one problem, it wasn’t available at his address. He could look out of his front door, through his wooded yard and see the connection on the pole. Construction was complete, but he still

didn’t have access to the service. Jerry’s inability to connect would not come from a lack of effort on his part, “After months of calling them, they finally gave me a quote…” Running the service from the pole into his home would come with a $2200 price tag. He could purchase a brand-new washer and dryer set for less than what it would cost to have the cable company bring him internet. And like the spin feature on the washer Jerry could’ve purchased, the tables turned for him when OEC Fiber became available in his area. “All I can say is thank you OEC for stepping up and providing super highquality service,” Jerry said. Jerry is not the only subscriber that has done battle with other companies to stay connected. This is just one of the countless stories of how OEC Fiber has stepped in and changed daily living for countless subscribers. Oklahoma's Electric Cooperatives hosted the 2021 Virtual Oklahoma Youth Tour Leadership Conference June 22-25. Henry Cargill, Lauren Haizlip and Brody Schuermann represented OEC as the 2021 Youth Tour winners. "While we were all disappointed the traditional Youth Tour trip to Washington, D.C. was canceled due to the pandemic, Henry, Lauren and Brody were still able to meet other Youth Tour winners from Oklahoma and build their leadership skills," said Tory Tedder-Loffland, OEC education and outreach programs director. Both Cargill and Schuermann were named as top 10 finalists for the coveted Youth Leadership Council representative who represents Oklahoma at the national youth summit. Approximately 50 rising high school seniors, selected by Oklahoma’s Electric Cooperatives, met online each morning during the conference to interact with one another and guest speakers and tuned in on social media each afternoon to complete daily challenges for a chance to receive a scholarship. The participants learned about electric cooperatives and their mission and created a community service project. They also heard from elected officials such as Congresswomen Stephanie Bice, Rep. Mike Osburn, Rep. Cyndi Munson, and Oklahoma Corporation Commissioner Todd Hiett. Students were challenged to email their elected official a topic they are passionate about or interested in. [1824312410] On the final day, students were invited to attend a luncheon at the OAEC Conference Center. "Oklahoma’s Electric Cooperatives organized a fantastic virtual event culminating with an in-person banquet," Tedder-Loffland said. "I am so proud of how our Youth Tour winners interacted with the public officials and other speakers."

Western Farmers Electric Cooperative (WFEC), OEC's wholesale generation and transmission power provider, has an impressive renewable portfolio that includes wind, hydro and solar. OEC's Solar Garden, located at Interstate 35 and Highway 77 in Norman, began producing power in February 2017, and Tuttle's 40-acre Solar Farm began operation in March 2017. As more solar facilities come online, expect to see it added to WFEC's generation report, increasing the already robust mix of renewable energy sources.
