Hidden Account Numbers Worth $100 Each month, OEC will pay $50 to the two co-op members who locate their hidden account numbers inside the Co-op News that month. The hidden account numbers will be placed at random within the text of each issue and not on the mailing label. The amounts will simultaneously increase in $50 increments until one or both account numbers are located by their respective owners or until the maximum of $500 is reached. 1. One of the hidden account numbers must be your own. 2. You must advise OEC by phone, mail or in person at the co-op’s office by the 15th of the month. If you find your account number call the Member Relations department at 217-6708.

Patrick Grace, CEO I hope your holiday season has gotten off to a great start. As our annual events wind down at OEC, we've been looking ahead to next year and working hard to ensure we're constantly improving our members' quality of life through the safe delivery of highly reliable, reasonably priced electric service, innovative energy programs and exceptional member service. In order to do that, we have tweaked the 2018 residential and small commercial rate. Beginning Jan. 1, the service availability charge (SAC) is increasing from 75¢ per day to 83¢ per day. To keep it from being a rate increase, we have decreased another part of the rate — the May bills will now be included in the winter rate...our lowest rate. Why did we make these adjustments to the rate? If you've been reading my column long, you'll know the methods by which we as members are currently charged for electricity are not at all reflective of the true costs of providing power. This is true for the electric industry as a whole. As regulations have forced the industry to find new, cleaner methods of producing power, it has simultaneously forced electric providers to change how that power is billed. You see, nearly 70 percent of the components that make up our electric bills is comprised of fixed costs. These costs, which include maintaining and improving existing infrastructure, will occur whether we use 1 kilowatt hour (kWh) per month or 2,000 kWhs. It costs a lot of money to ensure our lights come on when we flip the switch. These fixed costs are ideally covered in the SAC, but many electric providers, OEC included, don't charge at all what cost of service studies say we should. Perhaps the biggest factor in determining our electric rate is the single hour of the entire year your home consumes the most energy — typically a summer afternoon. The amount of power your home uses during that single hour determines the amount of power we have to have available and ready for use year-round. It's what makes electric rates a little complicated but something our board, our power provider Western Farmers Electric Cooperative and myself are dedicated to getting right every year.

OEC Foundation, Inc. continues Operation School Bell funding
T
he OEC Foundation, Inc. over the past 15 years has donated over $140,000 to the Assistance League of Norman (ALN) for its Operation School Bell program. The tradition continued in October when the Foundation's board of directors granted $10,000 to the organization. "We are proud to support such a generous cause in the community," said Joyce Wallace, OEC Foundation board president. "Operation School Bell is a staple each year for those who cannot afford to send their children to school with the supplies and clothing they need." Operation School Bell allows volunteers to assist students from Norman area schools in selecting new school clothes in a retail-like environment. The Operation Round Up® donation will assist in purchasing shoes for 500 students. [3033113708] “Surveys have indicated students who benefit from Operation School Bell experience a considerable increase in positive classroom behavior, student confidence and engagement with peers and/or school activities," said Rose Marie Sondergold, grants and awards chair for ALN. In addition to ALN’s grant, other nonprofits and individuals were also approved for donations at the Oct. 26 meeting. Norman Lions Club and Regional Food Bank each received a $5,000 donation to assist with eye exams and glasses, and food for the kids' backpack program, respectively.. Individuals and families received a collective $6,829, earmarked for hearing aids, dentures, eye glasses, dental care and orthodontic work. Grants from the Operation Round Up program are made possible thanks to OEC members who elect to round up their electric bills to the nearest dollar each month. The accumulated change is granted to organizations, individuals and families in OEC’s service area via the Operation Round Up program. Grant recipients are not required to be OEC members, and grants may not be issued for utility bills, rent or mortgage payments. Applications — individual/family and organizational — and information regarding the next meeting may be found at www.okcoop.org/ORU. Contact Tory Tedder-Loffland at 217-6726 or ORU@okcoop.org if you have any questions about the program or the application process.

wenty OEC employees recently completed the Employee Development and Leadership Program, a program intended to motivate employees to develop a knowledge base of all facets of the co-op, not just the areas in which they work on a daily basis. Spanning two years, the program consisted of classroom courses, the reading of leadership and development books, job shadowing, volunteer work, touring other cooperatives, giving a presentation and more. "I'm proud to see another dedicated group of employees not only finish this program, but help shape what it has become," said CEO Patrick Grace, whose vision for the cooperative led to the program's creation in 2014. Seventy employees have either completed the program or are in the process of completing it — over 50 percent of OEC's workforce. The program helps participating employees become more well-rounded so they can better serve OEC's members.
Western Farmers Electric Cooperative (WFEC), OEC's wholesale generation and transmission power provider, has an impressive renewable portfolio that includes wind, hydro and — recently added — solar. OEC's Solar Garden, located at Interstate 35 and Highway 77 in Norman, began producing power in February, and Tuttle's 40-acre Solar Farm began operation in March. As more solar facilities come online, expect to see it added to WFEC's generation report, increasing the already robust mix of renewable energy sources.
Data collected from Western Farmers Electric Cooperative reflects generation during September 2017.

Rate adjustment taking effect Jan. 1
A
recent cost of service study revealed a wide gap between OEC’s true fixed costs and our rates’ fixed costs. As a result, the service availability charge will increase from 75¢ to 83¢ per day, effective Jan. 1, 2018. “According to that same cost of service study, our service availability charge should be $53 per month – or about $1.77 per day,” said Patrick Grace, CEO. “Currently, that charge is 75¢. When the increase takes effect, it will be 83¢, which is still less than half what it should be.”
pay only for what we use,” Grace continued. “It takes a very big investment to provide electricity, but our rates do not currently reflect that.” WILL PART OF THE RATE DECREASE? In order to keep the rate adjustment from being a rate increase, an area of OEC’s residential and small commercial rates will see a price decrease. Bills mailed in May are now part of the winter rate — a large decrease in kWh charges from the shoulder rate. The winter rate saw a reduction of over half a cent per kWh in 2017. “The reduced per kWh rate in excess of 1,000 in the winter means an abundance of potential savings for all-electric homes,” said Grace. “Plus, all members could see savings as a result of their May bills being part of the winter rate.” It’s important to remember — like all products, goods and services — costs will continue to rise: production costs, delivery costs, materials and maintenance costs, etc. OEC continually evaluates all options and works hard to ensure members are paying a fair and reasonable price for their electricity.
"According to that

WHAT ARE FIXED COSTS? Almost all of OEC’s operating costs are fixed. Whether a member uses one kilowatt hour (kWh) per month or 1,000 kWhs, the same amount of infrastructure and materials are needed to provide electricity. In addition, linemen, bucket trucks and maintenance dollars are needed on a daily basis to ensure that infrastructure operates reliably and efficiently, which can be difficult in unpredictable Oklahoma weather. These are all fixed costs for OEC and, again, are all needed no matter how many kilowatt hours our members use. “Electric consumers in general believe we should

YOUTH & LEADERSHIP
OU women's basketball players inspire, empower local girls Twenty-five fourth and fifth grade girls from Lakeview Elementary in Norman, Little Axe Elementary and Pioneer Intermediate School in Noble participated in the OU women's basketball Girls' Clinic Saturday, Nov. 4. They learned valuable skills firsthand from OU players and coaches. "OEC won this opportunity at a United Way of Norman fundraiser, and we were excited to offer it to some of our more rural schools," said Education and Outreach Coordinator Tory Tedder-Loffland. "The OU players and coaches demonstrated what it means 8

to be strong, confident and compassionate, and we saw a physical transformation in the 25 girls as the day went on." [5308302008] The students perfected their basketball skills alongside the OU players and coaches, but the day wasn't only about basketball. "The girls left feeling empowered and inspired to be anything they choose to be," said Tedder-Loffland. "It was an honor to spend the morning with the OU women and coaching staff, and we can't thank them enough for the impact they had on those 25 girls."

Quick Tips to Avoid High Winter Bills
Looking to lower your bills this winter? Use the 10 tips below to conserve energy.
Seal air leaks and insulate well to prevent heat from escaping and cold air from entering your home. Reduce waste heat by installing a programmable thermostat. Turn off lights when not in use. Lower your water heater temperature. The Dept. of Energy recommends using the warm setting (120 degrees) during fall and winter months. Unplug electronics like kitchen appliances and TVs when you’re away. Open blinds and curtains during the day to allow sunlight in to warm your home. Close blinds and curtains at night to keep cold, drafty air out.
8
Use power strips for multiple appliances, and turn off the main switch when you’re away from home.
9
Wash clothes in cold water, and use cold-water detergent whenever possible.
10
Replace incandescent light bulbs with LEDs, which use at least 75 percent less energy.
