CEO ADDRESS
Our December issue is a tribute to the people who make our cooperative what it is. We celebrate the teams that drive our cooperative to success and take pride in the faces and names that make our collective strength. While our trade involves the use of poles, wires and fibers, what sets us apart is our workforce which aligns with our member-owned business model. Our staff's dedication and talent amplify our capabilities, adding to the seamless operation of our cooperative. As our cooperative grows, it necessitates a larger workforce, and we have managed to preserve our culture and integrate new employees effectively. We are grateful for our employees' passion, which ensures that our work is not only done but is also done exceptionally well. They embody a sense of community and exhibit care for our members and subscribers, fortifying our special place in the industry. We are proud of our family-like atmosphere that shines brightest during the holidays. Our cooperative thrives because our employees genuinely care for each other, fostering a supportive and fulfilling work environment. Our internal emphasis on employee care translates into exceptional service for our members, aligning with our core mission. Keep an eye out for our employees at various holiday community events this season! They are the heart of our service, and we are excited to showcase the warmth and solidarity that make us more than just a cooperative - we are a community. As members and subscribers, you are also a vital part of this community, and we invite you to join us in celebrating the holiday season and all the joy it brings to our communities. Happy holidays!

JOINING the RANKS OEC linemen earn journeyman certificates OEC linemen Ricky Young and Ryan Trowbridge earned their Journeyman Power Lineman certificates alongside dozens of other co-op linemen from across the state after years of classroom work and on-the-job training. “The dedication these men have for their work and their commitment to safety means more reliable service for our members,” said Ryan Spears, manager of loss control and former maintenance lineman. “I know firsthand the effort and knowledge it takes to achieve this certification and am very proud of both of these men.” In addition to completing apprenticeships under tenured OEC journeyman linemen, each lineman completed a four-year program that consisted of classroom hours, testing and on-the-job training. They join many other linemen with the journeyman distinction at OEC. 2133312503 Congratulations on reaching journeyman status!

Oklahoma Electric Co-op News • December 2023
Danny Drake, Jr. joins OEC Board of Trustees Danny Drake, Jr. of the Little Axe area joined OEC’s Board of Trustees following the resignation of former District 2 Trustee Percy Moreu, who served on OEC’s board for over 16 years. At the October meeting of the Board of Trustees, the board voted to appoint Drake as District 2 representative. This new trustee's began a three-year term in October following a contested election that did not meet quorum attendance. The trustee — also an OEC member — proudly serves his district, which includes the Newalla, Pink, Little Axe and Etowah communities. "We are delighted to welcome Danny Drake, Jr. to our esteemed Board of Trustees,' said Shirley Idleman, Board of Trustees president. "His arrival signifies a commitment to excellence and innovation, ensuring that our members will be served in the way they expect and deserve. We are excited for the fresh perspectives and dynamic leadership he brings to our team." Per OEC's by-laws, trustees serve three-year terms, with a different group eligible for election each year. OEC notified all members in the September Co-op News of the upcoming filing period for a spot on OEC's board representing District 2. 4536401001 OEC's Board of Trustees is tasked with becoming educated, knowledgeable experts in the electric industry. Seven of the nine trustees hold certifications and distinctions marking them as professionals in the field, qualifying them to make decisions in their constituents' best interests and ensure the co-op succeeds in its mission while remaining transparent to the members who own it. SECURE the SEASON Five ways to safeguard your home this winter As the temperatures drop and the days grow shorter, there’s a natural inclination to create a warm and cozy haven at home. Unfortunately, as we see increased use of heating equipment, candles and electrical items, the number of home fires tends to increase during winter months. 3101101401 Safety is OEC's top priority — not only for our employees but our members and subscribers as well. Putting these tips into practice this season will ensure your home and holidays are safe, and they might help save you on energy costs, too! Let's dive in. 1. ENSURE CARBON MONOXIDE AND SMOKE DETECTORS ARE WORKING PROPERLY. If your detectors are battery-operated, replace the batteries annually. Test the detectors once a month and give them a good dusting to ensure the sensors are clear of dirt and debris. 2. INSPECT ELECTRICAL CORDS We depend on more cords during winter, whether for holiday lighting, extension cords or portable heaters. Before using any corded items, double check to make sure cords aren’t frayed or cracked. If you use portable space heaters, remember to keep them at least 3 feet away from flammable items. Use models that include an auto shut-off feature and overheat protection. Space heaters can take a toll on your energy bills. Use them efficiently (to heat smaller spaces) and safely. Never plug a space heater into a power strip. Speaking of power strips…
3. AVOID OVERLOADING ELECTRICAL OUTLETS AND POWER STRIPS When overloaded with electrical items, outlets and power strips can overheat and catch fire. If you use power strips for multiple devices, make sure the strip can handle the electrical load. For a safer bet, look for power strips that include surge protection. 4. CLEAN THE FIREPLACE TO IMPROVE SAFETY AND EFFICIENCY There’s nothing better than a warm fire on a chilly night, but it’s important to maintain your fireplace for safety. As wood burns, a sticky substance known as creosote builds up in the chimney. When creosote buildup becomes too thick, a chimney fire can ignite. The chimney should be cleaned at least once a year to reduce fire risks. Regular cleaning also improves airflow and limits the amount of carbon monoxide that seeps indoors. 5. PRACTICE SAFETY IN THE KITCHEN As we spend more time in the kitchen during the holiday season, be mindful of potential fire hazards. Never leave food that’s cooking on the stovetop unattended. Clean and remove spilled foods from cooking surfaces, and be mindful of where you place flammable items like dish towels. 6405212500 Oklahoma Electric Cooperative wants you and your family to stay safe during the winter season. Visit okcoop.org for additional safety tips.

WFEC GENERATION REPORT
Don't miss the latest podcast episodes: Season 3, Episode 20: Mini-pod A Chat with 2023 Youth Tour Contestants
Western Farmers Electric Cooperative (WFEC), OEC's wholesale generation and transmission power provider, has an impressive renewable portfolio that includes wind, hydro and solar. OEC's Solar Garden, located at Interstate 35 and Highway 77 in Norman, began producing power in February 2017, and Tuttle's 40-acre Solar Farm began operation in March 2017. As more solar facilities come online, expect to see it added to WFEC's generation report, increasing the already robust mix of renewable energy sources.

TASTYTREATS
CHEESY MASHED POTATOES WITH CARAMELIZED ONIONS Ingredients
5 pounds Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and quartered 2 cups water 2-4 cloves garlic 2 teaspoons kosher salt 1 stick (1/2 cup) salted butter 1-2 yellow onions, thinly sliced or chopped
1/4 cup dry white wine kosher salt and black pepper 1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme 8 sage leaves kosher salt and black pepper 1/2 cup sour cream 1/2 – 1 cup heavy cream 1 1/2 cups shredded gruyere cheese
Directions
1. In the bowl of your crockpot, combine the potatoes, water, garlic, and salt. Cover and cook on high for 4 hours or on low for 6-8 hours, until the potatoes are fork tender. Set the crockpot to low or warm. 2. Drain the potatoes, then add them back to the crockpot. Let sit, uncovered while you caramelize the onions. 3. Melt together 4 tablespoons butter and the onions in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook, stirring occasionally until softened, about 10 minutes. Add the wine and continue to cook another 5 minutes until the onions are deeply caramelized. 4. Add 4 tablespoons butter, the thyme, and sage, and season with salt and pepper. Cook another 2 minutes, then remove from the heat. 5. Mash the potatoes with a masher. Add the cream and sour cream, adding more cream until your desired consistency is reached. Season the potatoes with salt and pepper. Stir the onions in with the butter and cheese, cover, and cook another 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and creamy. Keep the potatoes covered, on warm, for up to 4 hours. via halfbakedharvest.com
